We provide a world class boat, you choose to become the skipper, you select your crew (family / friends), and you provision the vessel for the charter holiday and experience of a lifetime – In doing so you charter the boat under a Bare-Boat hire agreement and take our yachts out sailing yourself. An inspiring experience. Our Skipper Yourself Bare-Boating option, is our most popular.

Bare-boating is perfect for the experienced sailor or repeat customers to the amazing Whitsundays. A full briefing is provided (and included in you charter pricing) to ensure you are at a competent level before departure. Additional training can be given if you are a bit rusty…

The briefing is so thorough that even novices can give this a go – Your briefing includes Navigation, Safety, Boat Handling, Water Safety, Boat Rules, Sailing, Motoring, Anchoring, Mooring and Emergency Safety Management Systems. After your briefing, if you are still not 100% confident, we offer additional sail training, which many of our novices pre-book to maximise their holiday enjoyment and safety.

Do I need a license to go bareboating?

No, you do not need a licence or experience. We are so excited and very committed to helping anyone new to sailing get out and onto the water. Adventure Still Lives. We are passionate – We are professional. In our caring hands, anyone can respectfully learn to handle any of our extraordinary sailing vessels.

Skipper Your Own Yacht

No license is required for a Yacht Charter in the Whitsundays, unlike other locations Worldwide, however some experience is essential.

To charter a sailing vessel, you will need to have sailing experience and be competent in handling a sailing vessel in most conditions.

On the morning of your Charter we do a comprehensive boat and area briefing and if you feel that you are not comfortable captaining your own ship, we are happy to arrange for a Sail Guide for your Charter.

If you wish to do nothing at all on your holiday, and leave the work to us, we can also arrange a hostess/cook and crew.

Description

The Leopard 46 sailing catamaran is perfect for sailing the Whitsundays. She features four double cabins with ensuites and a roomy cockpit for entertaining.

The Leopard 46 can sleep up to eleven. Four double cabins with their own bathroom, the saloon dining setting converts to another double and there is one additional small adult berth in the forward port cabin. All cabins feature plenty of hatches for airflow and comfort. The ample head room, generous refrigeration space, upstairs galley and large fully covered cockpit make for easy entertaining of large groups with room to spread out.

For sailing performance; a full batten main. For easy sailing; she has a roller furling headsail, an autopilot and a raised helm for good visibility.

Suitable for four couples, two families and mixed groups. She will also perform equally well under power.

We had an excellent week swimming, snorkelling and relaxing on the beaches. We saw dolphins, sharks and lots of fish. Indigo was nice and wide and very easy to drive!

What a comfortable and safe boat for 8 people. The configuration + fridges etc we great for 8 people. Having your own ensuite is a must. We found Indigo well appointed with kitchen gear for such a large group.

Briefing & Training before you charter

When it comes to getting acquainted with your home on the water, which by the way, you do NOT need a boat license to operate, rest assured you will receive a comprehensive boat and Whitsunday Islands briefing.

Our briefings are done with a qualified boat briefer onboard your vessel. Briefings take 3-4 hours and include a thorough introduction to your vessel, its fittings and your cruising area.

The briefer will assist you in planning the ideal itinerary for the conditions and they’ll show you how to put the sails up on your catamaran or yacht.

Support throughout your Bareboat yacht charter & our Sail Guide Option

If you feel that you would like more training than the standard pre-charter briefing, you can request that your briefer joins you for extra training time.

We also offer a sail guide service , which is the addition of a professional guide to your crew for a night or even for your whole trip.

Radio and phone support is available on-demand throughout your charter with mandatory “radio scheds” at the start and end of each day, so we know tell where you’re heading and that you got there safely..

Shute Harbour is two hours closer to the islands than Airlie Beach. One of the fabulous things about setting sail from our base at Shute is the nearest anchorage is just a short 4km away – meaning you can be at anchor and relaxing less than an hour after departing for your charter.

Whitsunday Rent a Yacht operates from our own private jetty within Shute. There will be no need to navigate busy crowds or parking on arrival, loading your vessel and preparing to set off is a hassle-free experience.

All of our guests will have free access to our moorings and jetty throughout their charter. This is perfect for those who need to re-stock. Simply make your food, provisioning and bottle-shop orders online and have them deliver to our jetty at a time that suits.

Day 1: arrive in airlie beach.

Get ready for the ultimate adventure! Make your way to the incredible Whitsunday Coast, and check in to your divine accommodation at Airlie Searene Apartments. Day 3: Depart Airlie Beach and begin the adventure

Rise and shine, because it's the first day of your adventure! Check out of your delightful accommodation and check into paradise! At your convenience, you can leave your extra luggage at reception after checking out of Airlie Searene Apartments in the morning. Soak up the slow morning and feast on a delicious brunch at one of the many incredible cafe spots in Airlie Beach. Unwind with a stroll around town before making your way down to the Coral Sea Marina to begin your next adventure!

Depart the Coral Sea Marina at 4:00pm, aboard the wonderful On Ice Catamaran. 

On Ice is ready to whisk you away to paradise! Day 4: Out on the water, the dream continues 

Wake up with the gentle breeze of the sea, and fill up your mug of coffee. There's no better way to start your day! Sit down to a delicious breakfast served fresh onboard, and get changed into your swimsuit as On Ice makes her way towards the incredible Hill Inlet. Hop off the boat and go on a bushwalking adventure up to the Lookout - where you'll see jaw-dropping views of the blue and white cosmos of Hill Inlet. After you've had your fill of the sights, make your way back down to dip your toes into the crystal-clear waters of Whitehaven Beach.

It's morning tea time, so feast your eyes on another round of delicious food! You will soon make your way to western side of the mysterious Hook Island, where you'll get to dive headfirst into the deep blue!. Anchor down in the cool and calm waters, and once there, enjoy lunch made fresh by your passionate crew. Grab a snorkel when you're ready and and jump straight into the turquoise waters! Rub shoulders with a colourful and incredible array of marine life - spot a swimming turtle, a floundering Sweetlip fish and even a stingray if you're lucky!

Wind down for the day with refreshments as you watch the jaw-dropping sunset. Head back to your cozy cabin and tuck in for another blissful night of sleep.

Day 5: Snorkel to your heart's content

It's your last day out on the water, so it's time to make the most of it! Wake up, feeling refreshed and ready for another day of adventures. After breakfast, grab a snorkel and head down beneath the water once more! Explore this new underwater location, meeting more vibrant creatures of the sea as you swim around! You might even like to try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding! Soak up the last few hours of your own personal paradise before making your way back through the azure passage towards Coral Sea Marina. 

You will return back to Airlie Beach at around 2:00pm, and wander back to your luscious enclave at Searene Airlie Apartments for another two delightful nights.

Day 6: Unwind and explore on your last full day in Airlie Beach

It's your last few days in paradise, so it's time to make the most of it. There's a number of incredible land-based adventures to explore on your last day, so ask your friendly travel expert for advice!

Day 7: Depart Airlie Beach

It's your last morning in paradise, so be sure to reflect on the incredible last few days of your adventure. Check out and make your way back home, or onwards to your next adventure.

Excess luggage can be stored at our  Airlie Beach Travel Shop  in town. Located at 344 Shute Harbour Road, Airlie Beach, open from 7:00 am - 7:00 pm, seven days per week.

You will also need to bring your own alcoholic beverages, available for purchase in town. No glass bottles permitted (with the exception of wine).

Holiday Surcharges:

• Tours at sea between the 24th of December to the 2nd of January will incur a local payment once-off fee of $20 per person per night, payable direct at check in.
• Tours departing on Easter Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday will incur a once-off fee of $20 per person per night, payable direct at check in.

Terms and Conditions

Covid Vaccination Status:

As a tourism provider, our business operates under the Outdoor Entertainment Activities category of Queensland Government Health. This means that from the 17th December 2021 you will be required to provide evidence that you are double vaccinated. Guests who are unable to receive both vaccines by the 17th December 2021 will unfortunately not be able to travel with us at this time. It is your responsibility as the client to ensure you remain up to date on the latest Government Health Advice and any restrictions that may prevent you from attending your departure.

Important Information:

This is a water-based activity, for safety reasons all passengers must be able to swim and speak fluent English.

Your Responsibilities:

Please advise us before booking if any passengers are under 18 years old to ensure this is the appropriate trip. 

You must reconfirm all booked tours prior to travel as specified on your voucher. If applicable, notes such as dietary requirements, pick-up locations and additional fees should also be confirmed at this time. Reconfirmations cannot be actioned through Sailing Whitsundays/Mr Travel, and must be done so directly through the Service Operator as specified on each ticket.

It is your responsibility to notify us of ticket discrepancies. Please read through the details on your voucher thoroughly to ensure all details such as passenger names, ages and dates of travel on vouchers are correct.

It is the responsibility of all passengers travelling to advise both your travel agent at the time of booking and vessel check-in agent before boarding of any medical conditions including food allergies you may suffer from.

You need to allow adequate time to check-in prior to the specified departure time. 

Prices/Extra Costs:

All prices are stated in Australian dollars and include GST. Surcharges over peak holiday seasons may apply. 

The Service Operator reserves the right to alter prices and extra costs. Extra costs may include EMC fees, Stingersuit/Wetsuit Hire, Luggage Storage, Insurance, Linen Hire, National Park Fees, Fuel Levies, Dietary Fees, etc. Bonds may also apply.

We will also endeavour to communicate these extra costs with you at the time of booking, and on your ticket. However, it is your responsibility to confirm which (if any) additional costs apply with each Service Operator upon reconfirming your trip.

Travel Risk/Insurance:

It should be noted that adventure travel involves risk. Whilst we make every effort to safeguard clients, we cannot be responsible for personal injury or loss due to the actions of our clients which are beyond our control. We highly recommend that all clients have travel insurance covering illness, injury, loss or damage to personal belongings and not being able to travel on the confirmed date of departure. You should also ensure your travel insurance will cover special circumstances including weather events preventing guests from travelling to their tour departure destination and cancelled flights due to unforeseen circumstances. 

Merchant Fees:

Please be aware operators pass on credit card merchant fees so there is a non-refundable 1% surcharge for VISA and MASTERCARD card purchases.

All ticket/voucher reissues attract a $20 administration fee.

Open Date Vouchers / Gift Certificate:

Shipping Costs are in addition to the ticket price and will be added at check-out. Shipping costs are non-refundable and do not makeup part of the ticket value. 

E-Vouchers incur no shipping fees. You have 5 years to use the value of the voucher. Seasonal Price Rises will apply if travelling out the current seasons pricing. Vouchers can be exchanged for free up to the full value of the voucher excluding credit card fees and charges.

Cancellations

Client Cancellations:

All cancellations forfeit 25% of the recommended retail price (RRP) - not the discounted/sale price. Cancellations made 60-30 days prior to travel date forfeit 50% of the RRP. No shows or client cancellations made within 30 days of departure forfeit 100% of the total ticket price. 

Transfers between tours can be made at the suppliers discretion, however, it should be noted that supplier fees may apply. Tour transfers also incur a $20 administration fee. 

It is compulsory that all cancellation requests are in writing and sent via email to [email protected]. Cancellations attempted via online chat or phone will not be actioned.

Supplier Cancellations:

The Service Operator reserves the right to alter prices, alter itineraries, apply a fuel surcharge, cancel departures, arrange alternative transport and vary itineraries and services if necessary.

All departures and itineraries are subject to weather. Tours may be changed or cancelled for any reason at the discretion of the Service Operator. If the Service Operator has to cancel the trip or activity (prior to departure) and we cannot offer a suitable alternative, then a refund will be given minus a 20% administration fee and any associated card fees. We strongly recommend that you have travel insurance, especially during the wet season.

In the unlikely event of your trip being cancelled or stood down, all guest communication is required to go through our Online Store via telephone or email. While there is a Sailing Whitsundays retail outlet located Airlie Beach, please be aware that they operate as a separate entity and are unable to access reservations made by the Mr Travel online department.

All refunds are in Australian Dollars and must be made to the card of payment. Sailing Whitsundays/Mr Travel is not liable for exchange rate fluctuations or fees, or any other merchant/bank fees associated with domestic and/or international transactions.

Where a full refund is applicable, there is the option to transfer the whole cost of the tour to another tour or “Credit” to avoid the administration fee. A transfer fee of $20 will apply.

You will be emailed confirmation once the refund has been processed. Once the refund has been processed, it may still take time for the banks to clear the amount. Please allow 7-10 business days for the funds to clear into Australian accounts and up to 21 business days for international accounts.

Accountability/Misconduct:

All Service Operators have the right to provide client feedback and to cancel bookings based off of feedback from other Service Operators.

Sailing Whitsundays/Mr Travel will treat this as any normal client cancellation and therefore the cancellation fees stated in the Client Cancellation Policy will apply.

Gunboat 57 Vai Vai is not your average charter cat.

One of the many perks of my job as a yachting writer is that I get to sail aboard a wide variety of boats. I especially love ripping off speed runs aboard some the world’s largest (and fastest) offshore race boats . Now, the truth is, the only reason I’m allowed aboard is because I’m just a humble journalist. But the blistering speeds those boats are capable of is addictive.

And as someone who’s been lucky enough to sail more than my fair share of charter catamarans in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, French Polynesia and other bucket list destinations, I can say every charter cat I’ve ever been on has been a fantastic platform for living large in the tropics. They’re not particularly exciting to sail.

I’m also grateful to say that I’ve sailed on a few high-performance sailing catamarans like the Gunboat 57 Vai Vai . One of the many cool things about Vai Vai is that she’s capable of blow-your-hair-back speeds AND providing just the right amount living space and cruising comforts. But I never knew it was possible to charter something as fast and fun-to-sail as a Gunboat 57—in Newport, Rhode Island in the summer and Caribbean in the winter—until now.

After spending a little time with the VaiVai’s owner Jeff Hager earlier this summer, all I can say is Vai Vai ’s speed potential makes it possible to cover way, way more ground than a more conventional charter boat. And since everyone (even the helmsman and sail trimmer can hang out in main bridgedeck area, and the catamaran never heels more than a few degrees) more speed doesn’t mean less comfort.

In fact, the indoor/outdoor living aboard Vai Vai is next level. The wrap-around windows provide protection from the high winds and spray such a fast boat produces. The 360-degree view is amazing while the massive roof provides essential sun protection. And the sheer size of the bridgedeck is soooo much bigger than what you’d find on a 57-foot monohull. And the nice thing about having the galley and living cabins in the hulls is that each cabin is particularly private.

But, let’s fact it. This boat will not appeal to anyone who rates a charter boat based on how over-the-top-“luxurious” the accommodations are. This is a high-performance sailor’s catamaran for people who don’t want to give up the sheer thrill of sailing on a charter.

The boat that will bring oysters and other raw bar staples out to your boat at anchor is one of the ... [+] many reasons to stop in Cuttyhunk on a charter aboard Vai Vai.

And if you’re lucky enough to book a week aboard VaiVai before she heads south in the fall, be sure to stop for oysters on the tiny island of Cuttyhunk. I guarantee you’ll beat every other sailing charter boat in Newport’s fleet.
