6 of the best: portable boat BBQ

  • Duncan Kent
  • May 26, 2022

You can’t beat a good barbecue at the end of a sunny day’s sail, but which is the best boat BBQ for your yacht? Duncan Kent takes a look at the options

yachttechnik grill

On a hot day, cooking outside is much better idea than adding further heat below by using the galley cooker. Many a rail-mounted boat bbq exist from the simple square tray that can hold a disposable BBQ pack to a full-blown, LPG fuelled grill with lid and storage cover.

The foremost features to look out for when choosing a boat BBQ are the quality and thickness of the metal, the robustness of the rail fixing (they can be pretty heavy when fully loaded), whether it has a decent lid with hinges or a retaining strap to stop it falling overboard, and if it’s big enough to cook for your usual number of crew.

The other important difference is the fuel, which is primarily charcoal or LPG. The former gives a nicer, more ‘barbecuey’ taste to the food, whilst the latter is quick to start and stop and doesn’t create hot ashes to blow around the cockpit.

There is another option for those keen to enhance their green credentials and that’s a solar cooker. Of course, they’re fine if you’re cruising in sunny climes, but not a great deal of use in the northern hemisphere beyond, maybe, July or August.

Best charcoal boat BBQ

Asado instant BBQ

This is a simple stainless-steel tray designed to accept the standard size disposable charcoal barbecue package readily available on a wide range of outlets, supermarkets, garages etc.

It has an attachment for a standard 25mm/1in pushpit rail, which can remain fixed to the rail even when the tray has been detached for stowing. To reattach the tray, you simply slot it back onto the bracket and for another £20 you can purchase a lid as well, which is ideal for particularly gusty days.

The main advantage of this super-simple device is you don’t need to clean the grill, although it’s not as environmentally friendly to have to bin the container every time.

Cobb Premier

The Cobb is the elite of charcoal BBQs and has the advantage of being totally portable (carry bag supplied) and extremely versatile. It not only cooks like a conventional BBQ, but it can roast, bake and smoke too. It is safe to use on any surface as it has legs and an insulated surround guard, which remain cool. It is also very cheap to run, requiring just a few charcoal briquettes to cook for up to three hours.

One of the many benefits of the Cobb is its ability to drain any fat or oil off before it hits the fuel, so you get none of the usual flamethrower effects when sausage fat hits red hot charcoal. You also don’t get ultra-charred food from it being too close to the coals.

A moat also allows you to slow cook vegetables or infuse the food with smoky flavours and the tightly fitting lid keep the flavour in and gusty winds out.

Kuuma Stow N Go

Made from corrosion-resistant stainless-steel, the Stow N’ Go charcoal BBQ grill is supplied with a quick-release 1in/25mm rail mount fixing, although it also has fold-out legs should you want to take it to the beach at any time.

Features include a grease drip tray, latching lid and a rugged, stay-cool handle. A lid liner also helps protect the outer lid from heat discoloration.

A smart canvas cover with carrying handle is available as an option.

Magma Marine Kettle 3

Equipped with a new, reliable electronic ignition system that runs on a single AAA alkaline battery, the new Magma Kettle 3 sports a highly polished marine-grade (18-9) stainless-steel exterior plus a heavy-duty safety inner shell that keeps the outside of the grill cool and protects against discolouration. It also has balanced, hinged lid that won’t slam shut when the boat rolls.

This model is designed to either take 450g LPG canisters directly, or it can be connected to the boat’s on-board LPG system. With the former, a swivel control valve/regulator allows quick and safe cartridge changes.

The Magma’s patented radiant plate and dome arrangement allows it to function as a grill, cooker or oven, as well as a barbecue.

yachttechnik grill

Magma ChefsMate

For larger boats and crews, the ChefsMate is fabricated from good quality stainless-steel and not is not only an excellent BBQ but is also an attractive addition to your stern rail. Although a rail mount bracket isn’t included (one is available for around £100), its fold-away legs allow it to be taken ashore for beach picnics.

It uses standard, disposable, Camping Gaz (CV470 or CV270) gas canisters or will easily adapt to a boat’s existing onboard gas supply.

The ChefsMate cooks quickly and evenly, while its inner safety shell funnels grease into a front-access tray. This reduces flare-ups and heat discolouration of the smart, 18-9-grade mirror polished stainless-steel enclosure.

The entire unit disassembles quickly and easily to facilitate regular cleaning.

yachttechnik grill

YYOBK solar cooker

Although they can take a while to get up to full cooking temperature, solar ovens are a fantastic way to cook outside the boat on sunny days. They require no expensive and wasteful gas cannisters, nor do they rely on dusty, smelly charcoal to fuel them.

You simply load your meat and veg into the stainless-steel tube in the centre and slide it into position. The large, parabolic solar mirrors then reflect the sun’s rays onto the central cooking cylinder and ‘hey presto’, tasty, unburnt supper!

I’ve yet to see one come with a rail-mount bracket but I’m sure one could be adapted or fabricated quite easily.

The propane mountable grill has an excellent stainless steel handle from either side of its large cooking surface. It features a removable grease tray that I like using for safer front locking access and a hassle-free grilling experience.

I am fond of how each feature of this Magma model works for either on-shore or on-board purposes. It’s nice to use the entire grill for cooking food with its extensive handles, lid, and foldable legs. The boat grills set provides 145-square inches of cooking surface without scratches or marks to your boat railing. I have put an improvised spacer for the pre-installed bracket to tighten the hold of the grill to the railings. But it worked well, giving a solid mount and worry-free cooking while cruising. It also helped ensure easy ignition and no flare-ups.

I love using this small grill set with an easy to mount burner. I can quickly remove the drip tray for ease of cleaning. Its lid has a stainless steel handle to allow cooking while it’s closed, and hand carries as a portable cookbox. Quite amazing that such a petite cookset provides a cooking area similar to a charcoal grill. Plus, you can exchange fuel canisters or a propane tank with its lightweight feature effortlessly.

Last but not least on our boat grills review is this black portable propane gas grill from NOMADIQ. It has the ultimate lightweight stainless steel tabletop cookbox that works for boat and outdoor cooking.

This heavy-duty boat grill set is best for traveling, camping, glamping, tailgating, RVing, and boating. It fits into storage bins of RVs and comes with a carrying strap and sleeve for easy transport. The grill is quick to use with a standard 16-ounce small tank of propane gas. You just need to provide the propane canister separately for about 3 hours of cooking.

I haven’t tried connecting it to a larger gas tank for over 3 hours of cooking. But this travel grill kit makes it easy to get separate accessories for more mounting and fuel connectivity options. This portable cooktop is among the high-quality boat grills I’ve used on the beach, parks, decks, and everywhere. I was amazed by how I can easily attach the grill using the gas regulator and start infrared cooking in seconds.

The Marine Kettle 3 model combines the stove, grill, and portable oven functions usually found in electric stoves. Its patented convection and radiant design deal with extreme heat temperature levels efficiently and with less fuel consumption.

Add to this are its mirror-polished stainless steel shell and handle with a hinged lid that is slam-shut-free. I attest to how effective an air-cooled Magma grill is in open flames; you don’t ever have to worry about discoloration or uneven heat.

This heavy-duty boat grill has an inner shell, burner, and advanced radiant plate that works well like other marine grills. It has a swiveling and windproof burner tube, control valve switch, and regulator for convenient use and fewer flare-ups. This grill effectively controls heat distribution similar to a boat charcoal grill and has easy propane tanks exchange. I love how its outer body can stay cool and safe.

  • Best use as portable party-size boat grills set, stove and oven
  • Effective inner and outer stainless steel shell for even heat distribution

bbq-grill-for-boat

Choosing the right boat grill does not end easily at getting your best choice. You need to consider the following essential factors:

  • Intent Of Use – Some boat grills may be easy to install on railings. This can be possible for the ones with brackets and clamps. There are also boat grills that are quick to install with bolts and nuts or screws onto rails or countertops. All these mounting options depend on what and when you intend to use your boat grill.
  • Boat Grill Type – This depends on the platform you use for the boat gas grills. Pontoon boats are best as they are wide, have good air ventilation, and have stable open surfaces for gas grills. Another option you can have is a regular-sized boat for fishing. It leaves enough space for safe grilling and poses no threats to the boat and passengers.
  • Fuel Consumption – There are plenty of boat grills that use less fuel and are more efficient propane-fueled cooktops. Getting a fuel-efficient propane type can help If you intend to grill away from the shore. However, grilling along the coast can be smart to transport bigger propane canisters for longer use.
  • Weather Condition – Some marine grill models that use propane are best for varying weather conditions and strong winds. There are also boat grills that are not wind-resistant and easily flare-ups. Mounting the cookbox with solid provisions is a big factor to consider for it to withstand downwinds and blowouts. Always consider getting one that handles weather conditions in a specific boating location.
  • Quality of Materials and Build – Choose those that are built with resistant materials against oxidation, rust, and corrosion. The ideal ones include stainless metal, aluminum, alloy, and fiber plastic materials but are the most expensive as well. Aluminum alloy materials rank the list as they also mean being lightweight and easier to mobilize. Choose those with quality material and construction.
  • Infrared cooking – This refers to regular grill kits that feature a layer of metal between the flame and cooking surface. These types cook fast and efficiently passes heat from the burner going across the metal grates. It evenly spreads the heat across the grill surface but is hotter among top boat grills.
  • Competitive Pricing – Boat grills range in price. You can choose from the most affordable to the highly expensive ones depending on your spending budget. The primary consideration, however, is the level of quality.

The Different Types of Boat Grills

Here are the choices for boat grills; they are mainly categorized based on power or fuel considerations:

  • Propane-fueled Boat Grills – The number one choice by boat owners for decades now is the use of propane gas. This is readily available and quite affordable. You can get it in several quantities, either small or large bottles or bigger tanks.
  • Charcoal-fueled Boat Grills – Nowadays, a considerable number of boat owners use this for boat huts or houseboat grilling. This grill type lost favor over the years as it is slow to start and poses a fire hazard if mishandled. Mounting styles are still available by brackets, clamps, or dropping it right into a rod holder.
  • Electric-powered Boat Grills – These are among the top-of-the-line boat grills that are quick to start and produce controlled flames. However, they work only by accessing a power source, which is not good for camping or small boats. Large yachts with full kitchens usually use electric grilling stoves and other compatible electric devices. These grills may not be suitable for the average medium-sized pontoon boats catering to families.

Benefits and Drawbacks of a Boat Grill

These are the primary advantages and disadvantages to consider for boat grills:

Advantages:

  • Compact, portable, and suitable for outdoor and boating purposes
  • Affordable and premium-priced are available in the market
  • Easy to stow and go types are corrosion and rust-resistant
  • Heavy-duty steel build with a powder coating finish is best for extensive use
  • Usually quick to set up, light up, connect, mobilize, and restore without the need of special tools
  • Huge cooking performance for small cooktop within limited mounting space
  • Compatible with special connectors and gas regulators for ease of fuel exchange
  • Even heat distribution and safer to use than the typical charcoal boat grill types
  • Marine-grade build with accessible ignition switch and temperature controls

Disadvantages:

  • Needs careful cleaning and maintenance to prevent damages
  • Some leading boat grills are expensive for similar quality of material
  • Requires children and pets to be away while grilling as the grill can get too hot

boat-grills-with-mount

The most common mountings are brackets and clamps, and bolts and nuts for a secured hold. Charcoal boat grills can also be on board, provided it poses no fire hazard. Always ensure the grill safety lids are clear from walls or decks.

Most boat grills can serve for 3 to 5 years. Though a bit expensive, some boat grills can reach a replacement period of about 5 to 15 years. These life expectancy periods vary by the level of use and care owners provide. Boat grills built with stainless, alloy, aluminum, or high-quality fiber plastics last longer because they can withstand rust and corrosions.

Any pontoon boat can have boat grills as preferred by each boat owner. There are plenty of top rated boat grills for pontoon boats with square rail mountings in the market. Be cautious when choosing ones made specifically for pontoon rails and watch out for lousy models. The lousy ones may guise as marine-grade boat grills with three times the acceptable price.

The best boat grill is one better way to integrate your favorite nautical meals while securing a safe boating experience. This leads you to social adventures that create timeless memories.

Safety, dependability, and easy use is the core intention of these top-rated boat grills reviews. Essential boat grills specifications and marine laws are what these product reviews aim for. Well as it turns out, you don’t have to be limited to the same old lunch.  Finding the best boat grill can seriously take your voyage meals to the next level .

As you can imagine, there are a few extra considerations for buying a boat grill compared to other types of grills since you’re on a moving vessel that’s on the water.

In this post, we’ve compiled our list of the best boat grills along with buying tips and all of the considerations you should take into account before you make your final decision.

Best Boat Grill – Quick Overview

Just to make sure we’re all on the same page – there are two types of boat grills out there.

The first class of boat grill are essentially portable grills which are kitted with accessories that let you securely attach them to a boat.  This type of boat grill can also be used for use camping, tailgating, or taking on the go in addition to on the water.  You should not use a portable grill on a boat unless it is secured and sure to not have a risk of tipping over.

The other class of boat grill are the type that actually mount to your boat to become a more permanent fixture.  These grills are less portable but totally necessary if you regularly navigate bumpy or choppy waters.

Which type is the best boat grill for you depends on quite a few factors.  Most notably, the type of boat you have, what your boat rides look like, and how many people you typically cook for.  We’ll cover grills that fall into both of those categories.

It’s completely constructed of marine grade stainless steel that’s been mirror polished and has a tempered glass viewing window.  A full double lined lower shell also adds a layer of durability and insulation to keep heat distributing evenly throughout the cooking chamber.

The polished steel holds up beautifully to the spray of sea water, and won’t rust or corrode over time.  At the end of each ride or cook, all you need to do is wipe it down – that’s it!

It comes pre equipped with fold away legs, and is light weight which makes it the ideal portable grill.  In addition, you can purchase a mounting kit separately if you’d like to affix it to your boat.  The mounting kit is reliable and incredibly easy to install.

The Newport II has 162 square inches of cooking surface area, which isn’t a ton if you’re comparing to a full size grill.  But as far as boat grills go, it’s a generous enough amount of space to work with and will definitely get the job done.

Safety is always on my mind when I’m out on the boat.  Especially when you start to combine a boat and the fire of a grill – it’s easy to see how some would get nervous.  The infrared grill technology in the Newport II however makes this grill one of the safest boat grills on the market.

In short, infrared technology ensures that your flame never reaches the grill grates and completely eliminates the possibility of flare ups from happening.  Just one less safety issue to worry about.

Last but not least, this grill is fueled by propane – specifically the lightweight 1 pound tanks.

Things We Like

  • Incredibly lightweight – yet very sturdy
  • Polished stainless steel exterior holds up to sea spray and is easy to clean
  • Can be used as a table top grill with fold away legs or can attach to your boat with a mounting kit
  • Relies on infrared technology which eliminates the possibility of flare ups
  • Fueled by portable 1 pound propane tanks
  • Made in the USA

Things We Don’t

  • Mounting kit must be purchased separately

Magma Marine Kettle Gas Grill

yachttechnik grill

Magma has another contender for best boat grill with the Magma Marine Kettle Gas Grill .  Instead of a barrel style design, it has a kettle design that’s akin to the look of some classic charcoal grills.

Even though it has that look, it’s a propane grill that’s fueled by portable 1 pound fuel tanks.  The exterior is polished stainless steel that’s marine grade, and it comes with a wind baffle and easy to remove grease pan which comes in super handy when it’s time to clean up.

The cooking surface is circular and comes in 13 inch, 15 inch, and 17 inch diameter options depending on how much cooking surface area you need.

  • 13 inch diameter grill – 132 square inches of cooking surface area
  • 15 inch diameter grill – 176 square inches of cooking surface area
  • 17 inch diameter grill – 226 square inches of cooking surface area

A swiveling control valve was put in place on this grill to ensure that you can place the fuel valve wherever it’s the most safe and convenient.  An indexed bowl and lid can also be rotated to act as a windshield in gusty wind conditions – making this an ideal grill for your boat.

The mounting kit for this grill is sold separately, so that’s something to keep in mind.

  • Offered in 3 different sizes depending on what your needs are
  • Grease pan is easy to remove for hassle free cleanup
  • Marine grade polished stainless steel
  • Wind baffle and indexed bowl/lid design can be rotated to shield from gusts
  • Swiveling control valve to place fuel tank wherever is safest
  • Cool to touch handle
  • Mounting kit sold at an extra cost
  • This grill is really only effective as a grill that’s mounted to your boat (i.e. it’s not a portable tabletop grill)

Weber Q1000 Liquid Propane Grill

yachttechnik grill

Switching gears for a moment, the Weber Q1000 Liquid Propane Grill is a portable grill that doesn’t mount to your boat, but nonetheless is a great option for on boat grilling.  It’s also a great budget grill and gets our vote for best boat grill for the money.

It has one high quality stainless steel burner (8500 BTUs) that’s fueled by 1 pound propane tanks and can get up to temperature in as little as 10 minutes.  At around 25 pounds, it’s an ideal grill to take with you on the go and can be used on many situations in addition to boating.

Build wise, the cooking grates are porcelain enameled cast iron and the body and lid are a cast aluminum.  These materials are sturdy, but you have to be careful to clean and wipe them after each use – otherwise the shell might be prone to rusting over time.

It has 189 square inches of cooking surface area, which is a generous amount for the boat and definitely enough to feed your passengers quickly.

One of my personal favorite features of this grill is that you can purchase a griddle top separately to convert this grill into a griddle.  This adds versatility and lets you cook breakfast, lunch, and dinner all with the same cooker!

  • 189 square inches of cooking surface area
  • Great price point
  • Very lightweight and portable – ideal for any type of on the go grilling
  • Can convert to a griddle
  • Weber is a trusted brand in the grilling industry
  • Quick ignition at the push of a button
  • No mounting kit option
  • You have to take extra care with the cast aluminum lid and body

Extreme Marine Products Cuisinart Grill Modified for Pontoon Boat

yachttechnik grill

The Extreme Marine Products Cuisinart Pontoon Boat Mod is a fantastic grill if you’re looking for a budget friendly choice.  Really this grill is the result of a very straightforward, yet simple concept.

They’ve taken the Cuisinart Petit Grill and modified it with a pontoon boat mount.  It’s very important to note here that the mounting kit is designed to mount onto 1.25″ open square pontoon boat rails – not the circular rails you’d find on many other boats.

What’s great about this product is that the mounting brackets are included in the cost, and there’s no tools needed for a secure installation – unlike many of the other boat grill mounts you’ll find out there.

As far as the grilling itself goes, the Cuisinart Petit Grill has 145 square inches of cooking surface area, and is fueled by the standard 1 pound propane tank that’s ideal for on the go grilling.  It’s not the most cooking surface area, but it’s enough to handle about 6 medium sized burgers at once.

  • Great price
  • Mounting brackets included
  • No tools required to install the brackets – very easy installation
  • Cuisinart Petit is a great grill that cooks thoroughly and evenly
  • Only mounts to 1.25″ open square pontoon boat rails (great if that fits your needs, but not helpful if it doesn’t)
  • 145 square inches of cooking surface area is on the smaller side

Giantex Propane Tabletop Gas Grill

yachttechnik grill

If a tabletop grill for your boat is more your speed, then the Giantex Propane Tabletop Grill is worthy of your consideration.  Out of all of the best boat grill choices on our list, this one has the most cooking surface area with 266 square inches to cook on.

What’s great is that even though you get a generous amount of cooking surface area, the product itself is still extremely lightweight and portable.  At only 26 pounds, it’s really easy to take with you on the go – whether that’s the boat or the camp site.  The foldable legs are sturdy for table top grilling – although this is not an ideal choice for boat grilling on choppy waters.

All of the surfaces are made of stainless steel and will stand up to sea spray – and are also very easy to wipe down when your day on the water is finished.

Two powerful burners (10,000 BTUs each) are ignited with the press of a button, and each is independently adjustable.  Within minutes your grill will be up to a cooking heat and you’ll be well on your way to happy, full bellied passengers.

Last but not least, a concealed pull-out drip pan can be easily removed when it’s time to clean up.  It’s a great feature that minimizes the amount of time and hassle you have to spend on the clean up process.

  • 266 square inches of cooking surface area to work with
  • Lightweight, portable, yet quite sturdy to cook on when placed on a flat surface
  • Powerful burners that are independently adjustable
  • Quick start ignition system
  • Removable grease pan
  • Burners can run really hot, you need to make sure your heat adjustors are on the right setting
  • Not great for use in bumpy or choppy waters as a tabletop grill

Cuisinart CGG-180 Petit Gourmet Portable Gas Grill

yachttechnik grill

The Cuisinart CGG-180 Petit Gourmet Portable Gas Grill is another great choice for boat grilling.  This is Cuisinart’s highest quality petit series grill, and it features 160 square inches of cooking surface area (enough for 8 burgers at once) on porcelain enameled grates.

A unique feature of this grill is that it can convert between a freestanding and a table top grill easily thanks to a highly adjustable leg design.  The freestanding style of grilling is especially nice to use if you’re fortunate enough to be grilling on your boat while the waters are calm.

The entire grill also weighs only 17 pounds, making it the most lightweight grill of any best boat grill choice on this list.  It’s an ideal grilling companion to take with you in any on the go situation.  The footprint is also extremely small, so it can be stored while taking up minimal space.

A 1 pound propane tank fuels this grill, which has a 5,500 BTU burner, a twist to start electric ignition and an easy to read temperature gauge.  All of those features make the ease of use factor really high here.

  • Great price, excellent budget boat grill
  • Unique design allows you to convert between freestanding and tabletop grill
  • Weighs only 17 pounds, highly portable
  • Tiny footprint when all folded up
  • 160 square inches of cooking surface area is great considering the size of this grill
  • The burner isn’t particularly strong
  • Due to the light weight, it’s not an ideal choice for grilling in choppy waters

Best Boat Grill – Buying Tips

When it comes to finding the best boat grill for you, there are a lot of factors to consider.  Here are a few of the top factors and features you should pay attention to when you compare your top choices.

Mounted or Tabletop

Does your ideal boat grill mount to your boat?  Or is it just a portable tabletop grill that comes with you from time to time on your voyages.

Much of this comes down to personal preference, but you should definitely consider how choppy your boat rides typically to help answer this question.

If you’re the type of boater who likes to ride out to a cove and anchor down for a float, then either type of boat grill can work great for you.

But on the other hand, offshore boaters or anybody who regularly navigates bumpy waters should strongly consider a mounted grill.  Even with seemingly minor bumps, a tabletop grill can turn unsafe very quickly if it slides around or falls over while passengers are on your running boat.

Cooking Surface Area and Grill Size

How many people will you typically cook for on the boat?  Having the right amount of cooking surface area can make all of the difference.  As fun as grilling is, you don’t want to spend all of your boat time manning the grill.  With that in mind, make sure you purchase a grill with enough cooking area to reasonably accommodate a full boat.

On a similar note, you should think about the size of the grill, and how it will fit into your boat.  Going with a tabletop grill?  Make sure you have a flat surface on your boat that can safely handle it.  Prefer a mounted boat grill?  Think about how much space it will take up and where it will go on your boat.  Ideally in a spot that’s equally easy to access but also won’t take up any seating or prime viewing area on your boat.

Obviously price is a large consideration in any purchase.  For the best boat grill, it’s reasonable to expect to pay anywhere between $150 and $6oo depending on the type of grill and quality you want to go for.  You can find great grills at all price points, but the more expensive ones will typically have more boat specific features and higher quality builds.

One note I would add is that you should add all of the costs associated with a grill into the price when making a comparison.  Many of the grills on this list require a separate purchase of a mounting kit for example – this cost should be added to the cost of the grill itself when comparing to other products.

The last thing you want is an extremely heavy grill that weighs down your boat.  Especially if you’re going with a portable table top grill for your boat, pay attention to how much it weighs.  After all, you’re the one who’s going to have to lug it around.

Ideally, the best boat grill will weigh 30 pounds or less.  If you’re getting a mounted grill, you can get away with something a little heavier since you won’t have to transport it after it gets installed to your boat.

Last but not least, you should do some research to see if the grill you want to acquire is covered by a warranty.

After all, protecting your purchase never hurts.  Not only that – in our extensive experience with grills, we’ve found that the products which are covered by the best warranties are typically covered by the most generous warranties.

It makes sense if you think about it.  If you made a quality product, you wouldn’t be afraid to put your money where your mouth is, right?

Final Thoughts

I hope this list and guide to the best boat grill has helped to point you in the right direction in your search!  Buying a grill for your boat is a fun process, and if you end up with the right one it will lead to a lifetime of great memories out on the water.

Just remember to weigh all of the factors we outlined above, and you’ll be in great shape.

Which grill did you end up with?  We’d love to hear about it – reach out to us in the comments section below!

Best boat grills: 8 of the best options for the beach and your boat

Serial boat owner Drew Maglio picks out 8 of the best boat grills available right now and explains what features to look out for…

The ability to cook quality meals onboard or on the beach is a necessity for all but day boaters. While most motor yachts and sailing vessels have galleys that feature gas or electric ranges and even ovens, the absolute easiest and best way to cook quality food efficiently and swiftly is by choosing one of the best boat grills on the market.

A quick safety note on fuels

Because boats are far from flame retardant and have many sources including teak and varnish cabins, liquid fuel reserves, and fiberglass itself which is inherently flammable, an open flame that is not tightly controlled is a risky proposition on a boat.

Therefore, as an experienced boater who has been tried by fire at times, I highly dissuade the use of solid fuels like charcoal or wood on a boat, which are not always easy to control and can quickly grow out of hand under the wrong conditions.

Instead, propane or natural gas with proper safety equipment and safeguards, are much safer and better fuels as it is controlled via a regulator valve and can be shut off or turned down at any moment, unlike a charcoal grill, which — if tipped over — can spill fuel onto the surrounding area which may or may not be flammable.

Another downside to charcoal — unless expertly controlled — is that it tends to smoke and has a propensity for creating large flames which flare up when one opens the lid of a grill. You should never use boat grills in an enclosed space , and even under a canvas Bimini top or fiberglass hardtop, they could be very dangerous.

Magma Marine Kettle Gas boat grill

Specifications

Size: 15″-17″ wide x 6.5″-7″ tall | Weight: ‎4.17-5.04 kgs

Reasons to buy

• Premium construction • Versatile with many uses and mounting options (sold separately) • Small profile; very portable • Regulator valve allows for very precise control of cooking temperature

Reasons to avoid

• Relatively small cooking surface • Much more expensive than non-marine grills • Accessories are sold separately and will drive up total price • Cheaper models do not have an automatic lighting method (requires match or lighter to light)

Magma is the market-leader in marine grills and their various kettle grill offerings are what one typically thinks of when the words “marine” and “grill” are used together.

With a fully stainless steel construction (that is polished on the outside), the Magma Kettle will last for years to come, provided you clean it regularly.

The Magma Kettle comes in two sizes: 15” and 17”, respectively. There are also more expensive variants that can double as a portable stove instead of just a grill.

Personally, I would opt for the more feature-rich and expensive option, as it is a small premium to pay for greatly increased utility.

Kuuma premium stainless steel mountable gas grill.

Size: 11″ x 20″ x 11″ | Weight: ‎3.63 kgs

• Stainless steel construction • Affordable • Extremely versatile in that it can be used on a flat surface or mounted • Comes with regulator

• Does not have an electronic ignition: requires matches or a lighter

Unlike in the kettle-shaped grill market-sector, Magma has some competition when it comes to rectangular grills and this rectangular table-top grill by Kuuma is a prime example.

While the unit can be mounted, it is versatile in that its feet allow it to be carried and used on various flat surfaces. With 125 square inches of cooking surface, this grill will allow for meals to be prepared efficiently for around 4-5 people at a time.

yachttechnik grill

Size: 15″ x 22″ x 13″ | Weight: ‎6.65 kgs

• Premium construction • Versatile in terms of usage and mounting options • Large 162 square inch cooking area

• Far more expensive than the Kuuma grill above • No electronic ignition

True to form as market leader, Magma offers a number of rectangular grill options as well.

Of the match-lit options, the Cabo is the “base model” which features a large 162 square inch cooking surface, premium stainless steel construction, and many mounting options sold separately.

Because of its feet, the Magma Cabo is suitable for usage on a wide variety of flat surfaces, in addition to being a prime beach companion.

yachttechnik grill

Magma Chefsmate

Size: 14″ x 22″ x 13″ | Weight: ‎8.07 kgs

• Premium construction • Versatile in terms of usage and mounting options • Able to use different types of fuels • Large 162 square inch cooking area

Compared to the Cabo, the Magma Chefsmate is the higher end option with not only a higher grade of stainless steel in a satin finish, but also an integral double-liner construction. Like the Cabo, the Chefsmate features 162 square inches of cooking area and is able to be used with a wide array of proprietary accessories and mounts.

However and of particular note: the Magma Chefsmate is able to use propane, LP, and even CNG (compressed natural gas), making it an extremely versatile grilling solution.

CNG — if you can find it — is a much safer cooking fuel than propane as its vapor is lighter than air and therefore dissipates, instead of concentrating at the bottom of enclosed spaces, eliminating the risk of an explosion.

best-portable-barbecues-boat-grills-magma-cabo-gas

Magma Newport 2

Size: 12″ x 23″ x 12″ | Weight: ‎9.04 kgs

• Premium construction • Electronic ignition so no matches or lighters required • Designed to work well in windy conditions • Features an integrated temperature gauge

• Very expensive • Heavy at just over 20 lbs.

At $500, the Magma Newport 2 is about the most expensive portable boat grill I would recommend, as above this price  point you’d be better off investing in a fixed grill.

Featuring a “dynamic combustion system,” this grill is suitable for use even in heavy winds. Unlike the other rectangular grill options on this list, the Newport 2 features an electronic ignition so no lighters or matches are required.

The Newport 2 is also built from the highest grade of stainless steel that is practicable and is mirror polished. Furthermore, surface temperature will be much easier to maintain and optimize with the integral temperature gauge.

Like the Chefsmate, the Newport 2 is able to use propane canisters, LP, and CNG. For boaters looking for the best, the Newport 2 is a great option.

• Relatively affordable for such a high-quality product • Handle and clips aid portability • Large enough to grill 6 burgers at once

• No grease trap • Some reviewers report that it’s hard to clean

The best-respected name in barbecues in the UK (and pretty big in the US too), Weber is renowned for the quality and durability of its products.

This portable boat grill comes with a stainless-steel cooking grate and a porcelain-enameled lid and base that should retain heat and ensure even, consistent cooking.

The legs double up as clips to hold the lid closed while carrying your grill, while the optional adapter hose allows you to connect up to 20lbs of gas.

Everdure Cube Portable Charcoal Grill

Size: 14″ x 17″ x 9″ | Weight: ‎7 kgs

• Integral grab handles • Integral food storage and cutting board • Aesthetically pleasing appearance • Affordable

• Not suitable for usage onboard • Non-stainless steel construction will likely not hold up as well if stored in a marine environment

Although I do not recommend charcoal for use onboard, if you’re looking for a portable BBQ grill for beach use, charcoal is a fine fuel and this Cube grill by Everdure is a quality unit with plenty of premium features.

Of note, are the sturdy grab handles and integral food storage plus cutting board, which will make barbecuing on the beach a breeze.

British buyers may be interested to learn that it comes endorsed by celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal.

Lotus Grill Portable BBQ

Size: 14″ x 14″ x 11″ | Weight: ‎4.2 kgs

• Quick to light and virtually smoke-free due to built-in fan • Adjustable fan speed allows you to control the heat • Stays cool enough to to carry without handles

• Not suitable for usage onboard • No grab handles

The Lotus is one of the most popular portable BBQs among boat owners as it combines the speed, convenience of a gas grill with the flavour of a charcoal one while staying cool on the outside for maximum safety.

The secret is a built-in battery powered fan that fast tracks the usual 20 minutes of hanging around while the charcoal gets going and ensures a nice even spread of heat with all the great smoky flavour but none of the faff.

You can even control the cooking temperature by adjusting the fan speed to suit. Perfect for a day on the sandbar.

What to look for in a boat grill

When selecting a boat grill, the most important thing to ensure is that it will hold up to the corrosive marine environment.

One also should be sure to select a grill that suits its intended use: for cooking onboard, a propane grill should be securely mounted so as to not accidentally tip over or fall overboard, whereas a grill for use on the beach should have feet so it can be placed and used on a flat surface.

Depending on the mounting method, there are various round and square rail mounts that can be purchased for marine grills separately. Some grill mounts also have provisions for being mounted in a fishing rod holder, which—depending on one’s vessel—could be an excellent and portable mounting method.

If left out in the elements all the time, I highly recommend purchasing a cover to shelter your portable boat grill from the elements.

Some more cautious boaters would recommend purchasing a grill and mount with a quick release, so the grill could be quickly discarded overboard in the case of an uncontrollable fire.

I personally have never seen the need for this on propane grills that are controlled via a regulator, but can see the logic.

Grilling On A Boat 101 – 3 Types Of Grills For Boating And Some Awesome Cooking Ideas For Out On The Water

If you like grilling on a boat, then cooking right on the boat deck is a great way to enjoy your marine trip without pauses or breaks leaving the boat for fresh, hot food. That will further increase the joy and excitement of your marine trip. Grilling right on the deck is possible, but there is a catch.

Deck cooking or grilling on the boat requires grills specially designed for boats to serve the purpose. There are different types of boat grills available in the market to suit the users’ varying requirements, but the basics are charcoal, gas, and electric grill types.

Grilling On A Boat

This article talks about different boat grills, their types, and their usage. Additionally, it also covers deck cooking tips for a joyful marine trip. So if you’re looking forward to such things, keep reading this article until the end. Let’s grill aboard!

What Are The Different Types Of Boat Grills For Grilling On A Boat?

First of all, marine grills or boat grills are different from those ordinary ones, which we use on the land. Usually, a boat doesn’t come preinstalled with a marine grill. So it’s quite apparent that you have to choose a suitable boat grill to start cooking on the deck.

Different types of boat grills are:

  • Charcoal Boat Grill

Gas Boat Grill

Electric boat grill.

Let’s learn about each of them.

Charcoal Boat Grills

Charcoal-based grills require a lot of patience because the cooking process is slow. Hence best suited only for patient people. It would help if you cooked fish or steak in such kinds of grills. A charcoal grill will give a classic smoky flavor and aroma to the food for sure.

It’s essential to keep the grill off the boat, above the water, so that any hot ashes will fall directly in the water. Or else it can cause damage to the deck, and in the worst-case scenario, it may start a fire.

A standard charcoal-based boat grill usually consists of stainless steel, is small and round. Almost all the models come out of the box with the accessories to mount them on the rail. While on the other hand, some models ship with an adopter slot, so you can attach the grill on a rod holder.

Gas-based boat grills are quite popular nowadays because gas or propane is very cheap and readily available in the market. There’s no risk of falling ashes or hot coals, which can ruin your deck, like in the case of a charcoal-based boat grill.

However, forget the classic smoky flavor and aroma in the food when cooking on a gas grill. Luckily, a gas grill is available in the market in different sizes. You can opt for small, medium, or large ones (large enough to even cook food for up to 20 people at once).

Usually, gas grills should be firmly attached on a stand on the deck, provided that the deck is large enough as you’ll need some extra space movement. One significant thing to note here is that you must NEVER use a gas grill above an open locker or companionway. Either mount it on the rail or keep it on the deck.

The first and foremost requirement of an electric grill is the constant AC power supply. A power cut for even 5 seconds can ruin your meal terribly. Many boats come preinstalled with an electric grill, generally on the flybridge or the roof.

Electric grills CAN’T be detached, unlike charcoal and gas grills (if preinstalled). These kind of grills are still unpopular due to high price, and the fact that it requires a bulky power supply. A generator or shore power can safely power electric grills.

On the bright side, electric grills don’t have any flame, so you don’t have to worry about your deck getting wrecked. No flames, no fire accidents! It gets better as you can use this kind of grills where charcoal and gas grills are prohibited.

Is A Boat Grill Any Different?

Yes, boat grills are different from the regular ones. You might be wondering how, so here’s the answer. A boat grill’s design makes it stand or rail mountable and aims at keeping the fuel inside the grill. As a result, such grills become safe for use in multiple conditions.

Since the weather outside will vary, the wind might blow out the fire, or maybe the rain might ruin the party, you don’t have to worry about it, thanks to the specially designed grills for boats. They are mountable on the rail. So even in case of an accident, you can always throw things directly in the water to avoid any mishap.

The best part of a boat grill is that it doesn’t require much space, so it’s mountable even on small boats.

Precautions And Important Points To Ponder For Boat Grilling

  • Never hit in the dark! If you have no idea how to get started with the grill, NEVER hesitate or feel shame in reading the manual. Shooting in the dark is the worst thing you can do if you’re clueless. Since grills can lead to massive accidents, it’ll be troublesome if it causes a mishap just because you were too lazy to read the manual.
  • Make sure to cook food on the deck in an open space and a well-ventilated area. Cooking in closed rooms can cause fire accidents. If not, then at least it’ll fill the rooms with the smoke, which no one is going to like.
  • Even if the boat isn’t sailing, water waves can always cause an imbalance. Improper installation and or mounting of the grill can cause accidents. In the worst-case scenario, it might fall off the rails/stand and start a fire.
  • Always be present. If you have to go away from the grill for some time, make sure someone else is attending it. In short, you must NEVER leave your grill unattended even for a second.
  • You must make use of long tongs, forks, and other utensils best for grills. It is essential to avoid burns and other self-injury.
  • Use safety clothes and gloves. Avoid wearing synthetic clothes, which catch fire quickly. Baggy clothes are again a big NO! Keep your sleeves folded.

Common Issues With The Boat Grills

While deck cooking can be fun, romantic, and memorable, there are a few issues that almost everyone faces with the boat grills.

  • Ignition may or may not work on the first click.
  • The lid is prone to become hot, and many newcomers are highly vulnerable to self-injury.
  • Cooking can be easy, but mounting won’t
  • It’s crucial to keep an eye on the flame.

Cleaning issues. After a delicious meal, it’s troublesome to clean the grill since you can’t leave it dirty.

Deck Cooking Tips – Quick & Easy Grill Ideas For Boating

A man cooks a feast aboard his watercraft.

Now that you’ve got an idea of different boat grills and safety points, it’s high time that we learn some deck cooking tips. This section will talk about some delicious and filling food items, which you can cook on your deck without much hassle.

  • Hot Dogs & Sausages

When it comes to grilling, never leave out the hot dogs. You can enjoy the American classic on board if you’re all set up with a grill. Let’s see some mouthwatering hot dog variations, which we’re sure you can’t wait to cook on deck.

  • Chicago-style Hot Dogs are quite popular. The classic Chicago dog consists of a grilled jumbo Chicago hot dog, fill in a poppy seed bun and some pickle, cucumber, tomato, diced onions, and finally, yellow mustard.
  • Chili Cheese Hot Dogs are grilled and stuffed in a soft bun. The toppings include shredded cheddar cheese. Best to pre-make the chili at home, then bring some piping hot chili in a thermos if you don’t have a microwave on board in your galley. Here’s an excellent thermos for bringing your chili out. I use it for my canoe adventures because my galley is a little lacking in my canoe.
  • Corn Dogs are another one of the tasty food items you can grill on the deck. Hot dogs and cornbread make a perfect combination, and they are super easy for the kids. Not the healthiest meal, but a decent enough snack once in a while.
  • Oktoberfest Sausage and Sauerkraut . Taking it just outside of the hot dog realm, you can always swap out the Weiner for an Oktoberfest sausage and bring some sauerkraut with you for a German grilled treat.
  • Mediterranean Chicken Skewers

Feel like a Greek Mediterranean experience? Try bringing some cooked rice from home. I make mine in a rice cooker like this one from Amazon the day before heading out for my adventure. I bring a container of Tzatziki and some salad with fresh greens, olives, and cucumber. A touch of dressing on the side is essential.

I like to prep my chicken skewers the day before and marinate them, but as long as they are fresh and thawed, you’re good to get grilling!

  • Grilled Fish with Pineapple

The last time I was in Central America, my wife and I went on a beautiful boat excursion for the day to explore nature. Our lunch stop consisted of firing up the grill. We had some freshly caught fish and fresh pineapple. We threw both onto the grill on the deck and seared them up nice. It was one of the most delicious meals I can remember, and it was just plain snapper and pineapple, both grilled to perfection. Oh, and a cerveza to wash it down, of course.

  • Burgers And Grilled Potato Halves

If we’re heading back to the American kitchen, a comfortable and popular meal to grill out on the water is the classic burgers and fries. In this case, we aren’t likely going to bring a deep fryer out on the boat. But I have a healthier alternative that is equally or more delicious to go with your burger.

Take some freshly washed potatoes. It would be best if you scrubbed the potatoes well due to leaving the skin intact. Now, merely cut them in half. Sprinkle with salt, a touch of olive oil, parsley, and a small sprinkle of garlic. Wrap in two to three layers of aluminum foil and toss on the grill for 3o minutes or so. Don’t forget to turn them. Test with a fork – if it sticks in easy and then quickly slides out of the potato, it’s done.

  • Grilled Tofu And Veggie Skewers

Going for more of a vegan alternative, some firm tofu steaks and veggie skewers grilled on deck are light and healthy alternatives to the burger or hot dog concept. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but for those of us looking to have a vegetarian or vegan option, grilled tofu is easy and fast to prepare. Oh, and it’s delicious, too (I can’t forget to mention that).

The Last Word On Boat Grills And Grilling

By the end of this article, you must have learned about different boat grills, safety measures, cooking ideas, and some common issues that most people face with boat grills. By now, we can say that you’ve successfully learned enough to start cooking right on the deck while on a marine trip. So from now on, no need to get off the boat, pay huge restaurant bills just to beat the hunger.

Also, it’s safe to conclude that boat grills differ from inland grills and require extra caution, as accidents on board can be hazardous. It’s always wise to onboard a fire extinguisher like this one found at Amazon. Boat grills can last for decades, while the fuel’s life depends totally upon the usage. Many people still doubt if it’s safe to grill on the deck. Cooking on the deck isn’t much risky until you’re cautious and following all the safety guidelines, but it does hold enough risk rough.

Unlocking Superior BBQ: Why FlameTechGrills Outshines Aluminum Pans

  • FlameTechGrills is meticulously crafted for Kettle grills, contouring the entire indirect side for precise temperature control by redirecting airflow to the charcoal zone. Additionally, it generates an offset smoking effect when the top vent is positioned over the indirect side, enhancing the flavor.
  • Its tall divider holds ample charcoal for 10+ hours of smoking and serves as a charcoal basket for searing, offering versatility and convenience.
  • Unlike aluminum pans, FlameTechGrills' 16-gauge stainless steel withstands scorching temperatures exceeding 1000°F during searing and is impervious to acidic environments like those with apple cider spritzing.

Customer Reviews

I purchased my Smoke and Sizzle from Amazon after seeing Tom Horseman's review on YouTube, excellent product and I can't speak highly enough about it ... I just watched another review today on Tom's channel showing a new 22" stainless steel grate for Weber kettles and it looks just as well made as the Smoke and Sizzle ... PLEASE GO THRU WITH IT AND START MAKING THEM !!!

Super high quality and fits and works great in my Weber. This thing will last years!

Exceeded my expectations. Very well constructed and works as described. Prefer this over my slow and sear for extended cooks.

I looked at the slo n sear, but the fact that this is all one piece, and allows for more charcoal, plus is cheaper? No brainer. Very well made, and should last many years. Broke it in last weekend with 2 racks of ribs, and I am well pleased.

Boat grills typically come in two different shapes: rectangular grills and round, kettle grills. The rectangular grills are typically larger than the kettle grills.
