Introducing the best gozo and blue lagoon tour….

Day trips are the perfect way to see and experience more of the world when you’re short on time, and Malta is no different! Malta’s sister islands of Comino and Gozo are must-sees on your itinerary for Malta , given their outstanding natural beauty and Mediterranean charm! Comino is Malta’s third largest island, and is home to the famous Blue Lagoon which is one of the most unique places to visit in Europe . Gozo i s the second largest island in the Maltese archipelago, and is a charming place with a jagged coastline, green countryside and beautiful cities and villages ! And if you’re looking for a recommendation for the best day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta , then here it is…

Cathedral of Assumption, Gozo - A day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta with Sea Adventure Excursions

Note : Sea Adventure Excursions offer different options for boat trips to Gozo and Comino. You can visit both islands, or miss Gozo and stay at Comino’s Blue Lagoon for longer. I highly recommend doing the Gozo and Comino boat tour to get a taste of both of Malta’s sister islands! You can find information on how to book a trip at the end of this post.

Who are Sea Adventure Excursions?

When I visited Malta, I opted to book a one day trip to Comino and Gozo with Sea Adventure Excursions after reading good reviews for the company on TripAdvisor. Sea Adventure Excursions offer a range of different Malta sightseeing boat tours on their catamaran, Sea Adventure! What makes Sea Adventure that little bit special (and the reason I booked to go with them) is that they have 3 water-slides and an underwater viewing area . Along with this, they have all the standard amenities, like sundecks, sun loungers, toilets, and a bar.

Tip : Food and drinks are not included in the price of a boat trip. You can take your own supplies aboard, dine in Gozo or Xlendi, or purchase snacks on board the catamaran.

Where does the boat trip depart from?

Sea Adventure departs from the tourist town of Bugibba located on the northeast coast of Malta. It’s a stone’s throw away from Qawra and St Paul’s Bay, and a short drive from other well known hotspots like Sliema, St Julians and Valletta. Transfers to/from the departure port in Bugibba are not included in the price of the boat trip, so you’ll need to factor this into the cost if you’re not staying in Bugibba. You can book these through Sea Adventure Excursions for an additional fee, or make your own arrangements. Personally, I booked my transfers through Sea Adventure Excursions as I stayed in St Julians.

Itinerary for day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta

Stop 1: comino island and the blue lagoon.

Departing from the town of Bugibba in the morning and bound for Comino Island, you’ll cruise alongside Malta’s dramatic rocky coastline with its impressive cliffs and geological features. As you sail across the water, be sure to look out for the Statue of St Paul on St Paul’s Island which marks where St Paul became shipwrecked in around 60AD. With all the wonderful scenery around you, you’ll arrive at Comino Island in no time, which is the first stop on your Comino-Gozo day trip!

Comino Island is home to the world-renowned Blue Lagoon which is one of the natural wonders of Europe and is where you’ll dock . It is located off the north coast of Malta and is the third largest of the Maltese archipelago! Located in between Malta and Gozo, the Blue Lagoon is most famous for its azure waters. You’ll have around 1 hour here (around 4 hours if you opt to do the day trip to Comino from Malta not including Gozo) to explore the island and swim in the crystal clear waters!

Tip: Take your own towels with you if you plan on swimming in the Blue Lagoon. And even if you don’t, take them anyway because you might not be able to resist the allure of the aqua blue waters! Oh, and don’t forget your swimwear!

If you opt to take a wander of Comino Island, you’ll find that it is a mostly uninhabited 3.5 square kilometre island, with a population of herbs and flowers and one hotel. But seeing as you only have 1 hour, you’ll probably want to spend most of your time enjoying the Blue Lagoon and boat facilities, especially the slides and underwater windows due to the abundance of marine wildlife! (note: I went in November so it was very quiet on Comino and at the Blue Lagoon but I’ve heard it can be a pretty crowded place in peak months, so just be mindful of that)

Tip: There are rentable lockers aboard the ship to store your valuables in, so you don’t need to worry about them being left unattended whilst you unleash your inner child on the slides!

Blue Lagoon at Comino - A day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta with Sea Adventure Excursions

Stop 2: Victoria (Gozo)

Once your hour’s up at the Blue Lagoon, it’s time to board the catamaran bound for Gozo which is just a short stretch away. Gozo is located northwest of Comino and is Malta’s second largest sister island. You will have 3 hours in Gozo and will arrive at Mgarr Harbour. From here you have the option to go off and explore solo, or to utilise the land transport offered by Sea Adventure Excursions for an additional small fee to help you to see the island.

Tip: I paid the extra charge for land transport on my day trip to Gozo. I’d recommend you do this for ease and to maximise your sightseeing time. You’ll jump aboard a minibus and be ferried up to Victoria before heading across to the coastal village of Xlendi.

The Citadel, Gozo

Victoria (known locally as Ir-Rabat) is the capital city of Gozo , and if you ever have a little more time would make for one of the best summer city break destinations in Europe . Taking centre stage of Victoria is the UNESCO World Heritage Citadel. The Citadel is an ancient fortification which has served as refuge from attacks over the years, and hidden within its walls is a whole other world of quaint lanes, museums, and cathedrals. One of the best things to do in Victoria is to wander the Citadel , and be sure not to miss the sweeping countryside views from the top of its high walls.

But Victoria is more than the iconic Citadel, and is home to a network of charming streets and sociable squares below its fort. St George’s Square is one of the most famous squares in Victoria to visit, and is lined with many bistros and bars. But if you want a quiet spot to enjoy a frothy coffee and a slice of cake, then head to Rizzles Cafe and Dolceria at St Francis Square before heading back to the bus stop!

St Francis Square in Victoria (Ir-Rabat), Gozo

Stop 3: Xlendi (Gozo)

If you’ve paid the additional charge for land transportation, after visiting Victoria you’ll be driven to a charming seaside village called Xlendi . Now admittedly, I did this trip in November so it was a little chilly and the waves in the cove were quite fierce, but this did not take away from how stunning it was. Xlendi is a quaint little place hemmed in by large cliffs either side, and is the ideal place for a spot of lunch with fantastic ocean views!

Stop 4: The Crystal Lagoon

Once your time has come to an end in Xlendi, you’ll be transported back to Mgarr Harbour to board Sea Adventure once again. As you head back towards Malta nearing the end of your Gozo and Comino tour, you’ll stop off at the Crystal Lagoon for around 1 hour , for swimming, snorkelling, and sliding (note: the boat only stops at the Crystal Lagoon if the weather permits and does not stop here from October-May)! After the Crystal Lagoon, you will sail back to Bugibba and if you’re lucky will be able to watch the sunset over Malta island!

Sunset over Malta on return journey following day trip to Gozo and Comino with Sea Adventure Excursions

Summary of day trip to Gozo and Comino from Malta

The only down-side I can possibly identify from this day trip to Gozo and the Blue Lagoon is that it was a little chilly, but this is completely beyond the control of Sea Adventure Excursions and is due to the fact that I went in November! So if you’re looking to explore the two islands that neighbour Malta and want to take a day tour for ease because you’re short on time, I would highly recommend Sea Adventure Excursions . I felt like I had enough time to get acquainted with each destination, the boat had fantastic amenities, it was well organised and was good value for money! I certainly plan to do it again on my next trip to Malta…

Tip: If you’re doing this Comino and Gozo day trip from Malta between October and May, it’s advisable to take a light jacket or jumper with you because the sea breeze can be crisp!

How to Take the Malta Gozo Ferry in 2024

The Malta Gozo ferry as it crosses the Mediterranean from Malta to Gozo.

Looking for info on the Malta Gozo ferry? Well, you’re in the right place!

We rented a car and explored the islands of Malta, Gozo, and Comino on our 12-day Malta road trip.

And we successfully took our rental car onto the Malta Gozo ferry without any dings. Yay!

We have taken rental cars onto ferries in Malta, Greece, and Canada. We understand the concerns and are here to answer your questions and alleviate that worry!

In this post, we share everything you need to know about how to take the Malta Gozo ferry and why it is your best option to get to Gozo.

We compiled the most recent, up-to-date information on how to use the ferries, ferry terminal locations, ticket prices, and journey times.

Let’s do this!

A close up of the starboard side of the Malta Gozo ferry on its way to Gozo island.

The Malta Gozo Ferry

Malta and Gozo are two of the most popular islands in the Mediterranean.

It is very easy to get to Gozo from Malta. And being only 25 kilometers apart , we recommend adding Gozo to your Malta itinerary .

Malta and Gozo are connected by a reliable, convenient ferry service operated by the Gozo Channel Company.

This ferry service runs 365 days a year and offers both foot passenger and vehicle transportation.

The Malta Gozo ferry is the most popular, efficient, and cost-effective option for traveling from Malta to Gozo. The ride is a short 25 minutes and offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and Maltese coastline.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, taking the ferry from Malta to Gozo is an experience that should not be missed.

✅ HELPFUL TIP: Once you get to Malta , we recommend spending 3 days exploring Valletta and the 3 Cities before renting your car and heading to Gozo. The must-see capital of Valletta is one of the most beautiful towns in Malta .

A Google map of Malta showing the ferry crossing from the northern part of Malta to the southeastern side of Gozo.

Malta Gozo Ferry Terminals

Malta and Gozo have their own ferry terminals that are easily accessible by car, bus, or taxi. This Malta Gozo map shows the ferry terminal on both islands.

In this section, we go into the location of each terminal and the best way to get there.

A Google map showing the 40 minute drive from Malta International Airport to the Ferry Terminal in Cirkewwa.

Malta: Cirkewwa Ferry Terminal

The ferry to Gozo departs from Cirkewwa Terminal in Malta , located in the northern part of the island.

The terminal has a ticket office, restroom, shops, a seating area, and a cafe. There are information boards that display the latest ferry schedules with any updates or delays.

If you choose to rent a car in Malta , you can drive yourself to the ferry terminal, or you can take a bus or taxi.

✅ HELPFUL TIP: You don’t pay for your ferry crossing until your return trip to Malta. Keep that in mind when planning your trip.

How to Get There

🚗 rental car.

The Cirkewwa ferry terminal is a 45-minute drive from Valletta or a 40-minute drive from Malta International Airport.

To get there, take Highway 1 . It runs along the northern coast of the island. The road is paved and there is good signage. All signs are written in English, as it is one of the official languages in Malta .

If you are comfortable driving on the left side of the road and follow traffic rules, driving in Malta should be easy .

If you haven’t booked your rental car yet, you may want to do so. This is especially important if you are traveling during peak tourist season, as prices tend to increase.

We recommend using Discover Cars because they offer the best selection for price, comfort, and customer service.

Their site compares prices between local and international Malta rent-a-car companies. They have additional features you can add to your booking, like insurance, GPS, car seats, etc.

Plus, you can choose the type of insurance you want ahead of time and avoid additional stress at the counter.

They really make renting a car an easy process!

🚗 Need a rental car? Check availability & prices: ➡️ Reserve your rental car here !

Plan to arrive at the terminal well in advance of your scheduled ferry departure. There are designated lanes for cars, buses, and trucks. Staff will direct you to the appropriate lane.

If you prefer to leave your car at the terminal, a large car park is available for short- and long-term parking. Fees are payable upon exit.

For a budget-friendly option, take the local bus.

The X1 bus takes passengers from the Malta Airport to the Cirkewwa Ferry Terminal. The journey takes 65 minutes and costs 2€ ($2.18 USD).

Malta’s main bus operator is Malta Public Transport . You can use their Journey Planner tool to plan your trip and find the most convenient bus route for your dates.

The ferry terminal bus stop is located a short walk from the ferry embarkation area.

Always check the bus schedule in advance. Schedules vary depending on the time of day and the season.

Several bus routes connect the ferry terminal to other parts of the island.

🚕 Taxi or Private Transfer

Unfortunately, there is no direct airport shuttle service to the Cirkewwa Ferry Terminal. However, there are other options available.

Taxi: A taxi from the airport to the ferry terminal takes 40 minutes and costs 30€ ($33 USD).

Private Transfer: You can pay a little more for a private transfer service as well. This can be arranged in advance or booked upon arrival at the airport.

🚓 Need an airport transfer to the Ferry Terminal? ➡️ Book your private transfer here!

A Google map showing the 16 minute drive from Mgarr Ferry Terminal to Xlendi Bay on Gozo.

Gozo: Mgarr Ferry Terminal

The ferry to Gozo arrives at Mgarr Terminal on the southeastern side of Gozo Island.

From the terminal, you can easily access other parts of the island , including popular tourist destinations such as Victoria and the Azure Window.

The terminal is a 12-minute drive to Victoria , the capital of Gozo. It is a 17-minute drive to Xlendi Bay, a cute seaside town we used as our base to explore Gozo.

✅ HELPFUL TIP: Before you catch the ferry to return to Malta, you will have to purchase and pay for your journey. Remember to allow extra time to process this transaction before boarding.

Purchasing Ferry Tickets

Malta Gozo ferry tickets can only be purchased from the Mgarr Ferry Terminal on Gozo.

That means when you take the ferry from Malta to Gozo, you will not be charged until your return trip to Malta.

So yes, you will be boarding your first ferry “for free”. They assume you will take the ferry instead of swimming back to Malta.

*We do not recommend swimming back to Malta… obviously.

👉 Ferry Ticket Important Info: ✔️Tickets must be purchased in person at the terminal. ✔️You cannot purchase or reserve tickets in advance. ✔️Payments can be made in cash or by credit card.

We explored Malta for 12 days during peak season and had no issues purchasing tickets or boarding our ferry on time with our rental car. Just plan accordingly.

Arriving at the terminal the day you want to return to Malta is sufficient.

✅ Helpful Tip: Choose an early departure time to avoid large crowds. If you are concerned about time, check the Malta Gozo ferry webcam for live video feeds of the terminal.

The vehicle deck of a ferry. The Malta Gozo ferry does allow cars on board.

Does the Malta Gozo Ferry Allow Cars?

Yes, you can take your rental car onto the Malta Gozo ferry operated by the Gozo Channel Company.

Most rental car companies expect you to take your vehicle to Gozo, so no additional insurance is required. But, as always, check with your rental agency in case they have a different policy.

It is important to note that the number of vehicles allowed on each ferry is limited. During peak season, there can be long queues and delays, especially on weekends and public holidays.

Therefore, we recommend arriving early at the terminal to ensure you can board your desired ferry with your rental car.

Before boarding the ferry, ensure you have all the necessary documentation for your rental car , including your driver’s license, insurance, and registration papers.

Once on board, follow the crew’s instructions and park your rental car in the designated area.

The Gozo Speed Ferry: A Summer Option

If you are short on time or only want to visit Gozo for the day, you may want to consider the Gozo Speed Ferry .

The Gozo Fast Ferry company offers a high-speed catamaran for walk-on passengers from the Valletta Jetty in Malta to the Mgarr Harbour in Gozo.

Gozo Speed Ferry only departs from Valletta Harbour. The journey is 45 minutes , and there are hourly departures.

To get there, make your way to the Upper Barrakka Gardens, one of the top attractions in Valletta . From there, take the elevator down to water level, and line up for the speed ferry.

You will be dropped off at the Mgarr Harbour in Gozo.

The Gozo Speed Ferry is an excellent option for those who want to maximize their time on the islands and avoid spending too much time in transit.

Ticket Prices

The standard fare for the Gozo Speed Ferry is €7.50 ($8.18 USD).

Although this is more expensive than the traditional ferry, the convenience and speed are well worth the additional cost for many travelers.

Why Visit Gozo on a Trip to Malta?

Visiting Gozo on your Malta vacation is highly recommended as it offers a completely different experience to the main island.

Gozo is smaller, quieter, and more laid-back than Malta. It is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and excellent diving and snorkeling opportunities. Gozo is a big part of what makes Malta worth visiting!

The island is home to some of the oldest temples in the world, including the Ggantija temples, which date back to 3600 BC.

Plus, some of the best towns in Malta are on Gozo, and the Gozitan cuisine is delicious!

Check out these restaurants on Gozo for an incredible seaside meal.

9 Comino and Gozo Boat Trips to Cruise Your Way in One Day

Gozo & Comino in One day: Boat Trip Cruise to Malta Sisters’ Islands

Visit Gozo and Comino in one day with boat trips and cruise activities for water sports and sightseeing without fretting over which bus to take in Gozo for land excursions. A cruise will bring you to see panoramic cliffs, coves and inlets around the islands which are unique travel highlights in Malta. Swim, snorkel, dive or sunbathe at renowned Comino Blue Lagoon.

Comino Boat Trips

Gozo and Comino in One Day

You can see both Comino and Gozo in one day due to the similar direction in which the cruise is heading. It is a popular choice for tourists to shorten the travelling time as many boat trips offer such a service. Departing from Sliema Malta, the ferry will first pass by Comino and then to Gozo as Comino Island is in the middle of the three islands.

However, you may also want to consider spending two different days in Comino or Gozo by taking a ferry . That depends on the intention of your visit and length of stay in Malta. After spending 2 weeks in Malta mostly in my Maltese friend’s car, I have concluded that the waiting time for buses and the journey is time-consuming and crowded. I have also taken a bus to the beaches situated in the northern part of Malta.

Swim at Comino Blue Lagoon

The renowned Blue Lagoon at 3.5 sq km of Comino Island is incredible. Comino has the bluest water in the Mediterranean sea. One can see an azure paradise of the Blue Lagoon from far by ferry. The sea pool makes it perfect for swimming, snorkelling or diving as no boat can enter into the sister island of Malta. The Comino history is best known for its hideout for pirates to raid Gozo or to escape from its enemy.

The turquoise sea colour was also used as shooting scenes for some famous movies – Troy (2004) and Swept Away (2002). Hence, Comino Blue Lagoon is one place where you like to chill if you are in for some water sports. If you are not there for swimming but merely want to witness its splendour for a short while, you can take a ferry and proceed to Gozo. Take note that the Comino Island is a highly touristic place. You have been warned, though.

Comino Blue Lagoon Cruise

Sightseeing in Gozo

Gozo is another island which I would term it similar to Malta where there are more things to do and see other than the beach. It is the second-largest island next to Malta. You can visit the UNESCO site, Citadella at Victoria, which is the centre of Gozo. There are many more hidden gems at Gozo which is worth exploring and will wow your day away. If a city tour is what you fancy instead of swimming and sunbathing, then you can go Gozo directly and spend an entire day there.

Comino and Gozo Boat Trip Cruise

Here are some highlights of the boat trips and cruise activities you can do in Comino and Gozo in one day . Some of the tour packages include hotel transfer or otherwise, optional with a small charge. There is free WiFi on board of the vessels. Four fast ferry catamarans for travel between Malta and Gozo can withstand 3 metre waves

Aqra bil- Malti

Final preparations are underway for four catamarans between Malta and Gozo to begin operating in 5 days time. These four catamarans will be operated by two companies, Gozo Fast Ferry Ltd and Virtu Ferries. In comments to TVM, representatives of the two operators said that their main goal was to provide a service to passengers who want to travel between the two islands due to work, while saying that the four catamarans can withstand operating in strong sea, with waves of up to about 3 metres.

Gozo Fast Ferry Ltd and Virtu Ferries will commence operations from Tuesday 1st June. From Malta, these catamarans will depart from Ta ‘Liesse in Valletta and, in Gozo, from the port of Mgarr. TVM visited the catamarans of both companies, with the operators of both of them telling TVM that the journey between the two islands would take less than 45 minutes.

Gozo Fast Ferry Ltd’s catamarans, named Your Faith and Your Wisdom, can carry 300 passengers on each voyage, and have been specially built to deliver a fast ferry service. Gozo Fast Ferry Ltd’s Operations Manager, Joe Sant Fournier, said the company will operate two catamarans to keep up with the schedule.

“We are focusing on Maltese and Gozitans particularly those who want to come to Malta, or Maltese who want to go to Gozo, especially for work. Those who work in Government departments, hospitals; students who attend universities, sixth forms.”

Mr Sant Fournier said that the investment of this company amounts to close to 10 million euros and the ships are specially made to pollute at a minimum. We asked Gozo Fast Ferry Ltd’s Technical Advisor, Kurt Gutteridge, how far Your Faith and Your Wisdom catamarans can operate in rough seas.

“The boats are built, certified to operate up to what we call a significant wave height of 2 and a half metres. That is, they can can reach up to 3 metres.”

Virtu Ferries will also operate the fast ferries service with St. Francis and St. Paul catamarans that can carry 316 passengers per trip. These catamarans had welcomed Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI when they visited Malta. Captain Tim Fenech told us that the company intends to invest in other ships for this service.

“The company is in discussions with three major shipyards to build ships specifically for this route in terms of both safety, comfort and speed, as well as to have less impact on the environment.”

TVM asked Captain Fenech what markets they were looking to attract as passengers.

“First and foremost the company is looking to accommodate Maltese and Gozitans to facilitate the journey between Malta and Gozo both for reasons of work and even for local tourism ”

Captain Tim Fenech said that the catamarans St. Paul and St. Francis can operate in sea waves up to three metres as well, but said that everything depended on the elements and that the captain always prioritises the health and safety of passenger.

Both operators also said that when it comes to the amount of crew they will work according to the standards set by Transport Malta. Upon arrival in Ta ‘Liesse, Valletta, Transport Malta has even thought about direct public transport to Junior College, the University, Mater Dei Hospital, and MCAST.

  • Including Ggantija Temples, The Citadel in Victoria, Inland Sea & Scenic Routes
  • Fast Ferry from Valletta, Entrances & Tasting Experience included
  • FLEXI Cancellation Check our T&Cs at check out before you pay">

Our tour to Gozo starts with the fast ferry service from Valletta direct to the pretty port of Mgarr. The charm of Gozo is apparent the moment you arrive there. Greener, more rural and smaller than Malta. Our tour is a combination of scenic spots, historical sites, local culture and food.

Due to our early start we have an opportunity of visiting a 75 year old traditional bakery in one of the local towns. Watch them prepare for their daily baking and you will also have the opportunity to taste something they would have baked a little earlier.

Our next stop are the magnificent Ggantija temples, meaning 'Giant Temples'. These temple also enjoy UNESCO satus and considered to be amongst the oldest free standing megalithic monuments in the world dating, back over 5500 years. The adjoining visitor's centre boasts artefacts from the temple site and also from the nearby underground temple site of the Xaghra Circle (4100BC), studies of samples and results from which are still emerging.

A scenic drive will pass through quaint sleepy villages that characterise Gozo's unique charm. The drive also highlights the north coast including a stop at the Calypso Cave belvedere, this viewing point offers breathtaking views over the red sands of Ramla Bay and the lush fertile valley which leads down to it. This panoramic coastal driver drive takes us to Xwejni bay with its salt pans and the natural feature of Qolla l-Bajda.

We continue on to one of the most photographed sites on Gozo, Dwejra. This is a site of ecological and geological importance, which includes the Blue Hole, The General's Rock and Inland Sea.

We then go to the pretty seasode village of Xlendi. The picturesque bay has a small sandy beach and restaurantsilining the waterfront. Here you will have some free time for a lunch break.

After lunch we will visit, Victoria the capital of Gozo. The main attraction is the 'The Citadel', a small fortified town which dominates the heights above the island capital. This site has been inhabited since the Bronze Age period. Walking through this historical gem one can admire the medieval layout with interesting features and some excellent examples of domestic medieval architecture, blending with buildings of the Knights of St John. Once at the top, a stunning panorama of the whole island and even Malta's northern coast enfolds.

We make our back to Victoria and drive down to the port for the ferry back to Valletta.
