Adrenaline Powerboats Building ZRX-54 and 47′ Center Console

adrenaline powerboats cost

Mike Layton , owner of Lincolnton, GA-based Adrenaline Powerboats, announced that the company is currently tooling two new go-fast vee hulls: the ZRX-54 and a 47-foot center-console model.

Adrenaline has been wowing the industry with two ultra-luxurious speedboats: the outboard-powered 45 Speede and the ZRX-47, equipped with stern-drives. Both are all-carbon boats with CNC-cut tooling; everything is designed in CAD at the factory and boast magnificent detail work and supercar-style design, fit and finish, etc. Both have been shown at the Miami International Boat Show , and have participated in events like the 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run and the Jacksonville River Rally.

Layton told Powerboat Nation that the new 54 will be “the big brother” of the 47. “They’re very similar and share a lot of tooling,” he said. Meanwhile, the center console model—as yet unnamed—is a design that Adrenaline has been working on for some time. A few days ago, unable to contain his enthusiasm, Layton shared an image of an artist’s rendering of the boat to social media. “It’s a sort of teaser picture,” Layton says. “I couldn’t take it anymore—I just had to show people. The design is not completely fleshed out yet, but it’s very close.”

Layton said the new boats will follow the same construction plan as the ZRX-47 and 45 Speede. “They will follow suit with the other boats that we build,” he said. “Everything we build is epoxy infused.”

The base engines on the 54 will be twin staggered 1350s, while the center console will typically feature Mercury Racing 450Rs, which is how the first customers have ordered it.

Expect to see the center console by Spring 2020; the first 54 out of the mold will likely be later that year.

Adrenaline powerboats slays with new 47 reaper.

The Georgia builder is moving into the center-console market in a big way.

By PRA’s Gregg Mansfield

Long before Adrenaline Powerboats was known for its stunning performance boats, owner Michael Layton built center-console boats before switching gears. Now Layton is returning to his roots with the new 47 Reaper, the first performance center-console for the company.

The 47 Reaper was nearly three years in the making and part of the Lincolnton, Ga., builder’s expansion into the popular center-console market.

“We built some fishing boats and go-fast (center consoles) back in the day,” said Layton, who founded Adrenaline Powerboats with his wife, Elizabeth, in 2000. “It’s a very comfortable space for us to come back to. Obviously, it’s a lot more complex on the design and a much bigger platform.”

adrenaline powerboats cost

To produce the 47 Reaper, Layton added 70,000 feet of manufacturing space to the facility. The center console will be Adrenaline Powerboats’ first production boat, a break for the custom performance-boat builder. The company went to Miami Prestige Interiors for the cabin and cockpit, and Doug Harrell Design in DeLand, Fla., to paint the 47 Reapers.

By outsourcing the paint and interior, Layton said the goal is to ramp up production and offer a shorter wait time for customers. The company’s commitment to quality won’t change.

“The biggest thing underneath the sexy surface is the way that we build them, the whole boat is epoxy infused, the string grid is epoxy infused,” he said. “We just go to the next level of how we build and engineer our boats. That’s never going to change.”

When styling the center console, Layton created a flared bow and an angular transom like a superyacht. A cool feature are the side-entry doors to  port and starboard, which come standard. The builder notched the boat so when the dive door is open it tucks away into a corner.

Checking in at 47 feet with a 12-foot beam, Layton had plenty of real estate to work with in the center-console boat. The helm featured dual row helm seating for six people with full wraparound coaming bolsters. Adrenaline Powerboats included a refrigerated cool box behind the rear bolsters.

The dash includes three Garmin screens and buyers can add an overhead Garmin at the helm and a 22-inch screen in the bow.

Upgrades available include a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer, generator, Mercury Skyhook Digital Anchor and a Garmin autopilot. Buyers can add radar, sonar or even bait wells for an occasional fishing excursion. With the richly appointed interior, owners might be reluctant to haul fish onboard, but the boat does come with freshwater and raw water washdowns.

“It would be a good boat for a guy who probably wants to fish two times out of 10 times he takes his boat out,” Layton said.

adrenaline powerboats cost

Protecting the electronics is a large hardtop, which is built in-house from engineered carbon. With no metal tubes or substructure, the hardtop is still strong and doesn’t rattle even in offshore conditions.

Access to the cabin is from the port side with a large door opening on a billet pantograph hinge. The 47 Reaper features a separate head from the main cabin, which buyers come to expect on larger center-console models.

The cabin features a queen size bed and small galley area for overnighting. The head offers a rain shower, VacuFlush toilet and wash sink with heated water. Tinted windows at the top of the console let in plenty of fresh light and to keep the cabin cool on warm days, the build includes a 12,000 BTU air conditioner as standard equipment.

“I found that to be one of the most challenging spaces to design, but what we ended up with is very usable,” he said.

Base power for the 47 Reaper is quad Mercury Racing 450R outboard or buyers can upgrade to quint Mercury Racing 450R. Layton said of the first eight boats in production, only one buyer has opted for four outboards on the transom. The package delivers a mid-80-mph top-end speed, he said.

“I believe that if a guy wanted us to really focus on speed, we could get him to the upper 80s or 90 mph, but we’re setting up the boats to take on rough water,” Layton said.

Layton sees buyers using the 47 Reaper to go to the Bahamas, tooling around South Florida and rough-water lakes including Lake of the Ozarks and the Great Lakes. “We’re getting interest from all over,” he said.

adrenaline powerboats cost

While the 47 Reaper is the company’s first “production” boat, Layton said the workmanship is as good as any custom performance boat that comes rolling out of the Georgia plant. After making its public debut at the Palm Beach International Boat Show in March, Adrenaline ramped up production to stay ahead of demand.

“Up until the Reaper, we had literally painted every boat we’ve ever built, and it was tough for me to let go of,” Layton said. “There’s a lot of man-hours in a boat like this and it’s a big, big job. With others handling the painting, we can focus on completing more and more boats.”

Inside SOTW Mag: Adrenaline ZRX 47 Profile—What A Rush

In terms of goose-bump boating experiences, the one felt in the first ZRX 47 Carbon Series offshore V-bottom from  Adrenaline Powerboats  alongside Adrenaline owner Mike Layton during the  Desert Storm Poker Run  in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., in April is near the top of my list. It’s not No. 1—riding in the backseat as John Tomlinson and Dave Scott ran the  Mystic Powerboats  catamaran up to 168 mph on the one-mile  Lake of the Ozarks Shootout  course in 2007 is going to be tough to beat.

Powered by twin  Mercury Racing  1100 engines and as technologically advanced as any boat out there, the first ZRX 47 from Adrenaline Powerboats turns heads no matter where it goes. Photo courtesy/copyright Tom Leigh/ Tommy Gun Images .

But get this. It wasn’t the fact that the ZRX 47, which is powered by twin Mercury Racing 1100 engines, accelerated with incredible force. Nor was it the boat’s responsive and stable handling manners in the mixed-up choppy Lake Havasu water halfway into Saturday’s poker run that got me. The coolest part about catching a ride in the all-epoxy, all- carbon infused 47-footer that was designed and assembled utilizing high-tech CAD and CNC machining processes, was the attention the V-bottom received while idling through The Channel from Thompson Bay back to the London Bridge Resort on that picture-perfect day.

I don’t think it mattered what the music was, for the record it was Calvin Harris, or how loud the music was, people were awestruck by either the boat’s size, sleek lines, gorgeous yellow and gray paint job, or engine hatch that Layton raised slightly to show off its unique design. They’d definitely never seen one, because it’s the only one—for now at least.

Supercar Blondie

This superboat has 2700hp and its body is made from 100% carbon fiber

ZRX boat

This boat can only be described as a supercar on water.

It’s called the ZRX and it’s fitted with two engines that produce a whopping 2,700 horsepower.

It’s not just incredibly fast, but it sounds like a Lamborghini Aventador when you turn it on.

You can watch (and listen to it) here!

This vessel is full of buttons and latches that do super impressive things.

The guys from Boats Daily Official took us through the ZRX , explaining exactly how everything works.

For starters, the back engine hatch opens with the touch of a button.

ZRX boat hatch opening

“As you can see, the fit and finish is perfect,” they said.

“How this hatch fits perfectly into place, it’s super seamless and beautiful.”

The center console also opens electronically, allowing you to walk into the cabin underneath.

Inside the cabin, which is down two steps, you’ll find four bench seats and heaps of storage.

Center console opens up to reveal the cabin

On the main deck, the ZRX is fitted with six carbon fiber bucket seats but can seat up to 10 people thanks to benches on the edges.

“You really feel like you’re sitting in a race car in this boat, it’s super comfortable,” they said.

“It grabs you and you can really feel the performance.”

The ZRX isn’t just built for high performance, it’s fitted with crazy extras to make your trips more enjoyable, including four 8-inch speakers and a 12-inch custom subwoofer.

ZRX boat

The ZRX was, of course, built with speed in mind.

It reaches speeds of up to 240km/h (150mph), making it just about as fast as a supercar on land.

Adrenaline Powerboats describes it as “an absolute work of art”.

And we can see why because this all-carbon and epoxy vessel is in a league of its own.

ZRX power boat price

A vessel of this caliber unsurprisingly doesn’t come cheap.

The ZRX retails for a cool $735,000.

Adrenaline Powerboat’s “Carbon-Fiber Rush” at the Palm Beach Boat Show

Story and photos by DinaRella / Additional images from Adrenaline Powerboats

Adrenaline Powerboats have a knack for standing out, whether running loud and proud at WOT churning up the waters, or eliciting oohs and ahhs in off-mode stirring up the crowds on the quays. This past March, Adrenaline incited another rush at the Palm Beach International Boat Show (PBIBS), causing an instantaneous contagious reaction that had attendees gushing over their latest model ZRX 47 Carbon Series V-bottom and never-before-seen 47 Reaper center console.

The outrageous optics on the American Made “One Nation Under God” Georgia-based brand’s newest naval duo drenched in badass billet bling (right on down to the custom battery cases on cc) and a plethora of carbon-fiber fineness did their job adding that high-performance buzz to the refined upscale vibe of the show where superyachts with sky deck Jacuzzis and towering sportfishing vessels are the nautical norm.

The unique touches, techniques and top caliber craftsmanship embedded in the fibers of these stealth speedsters speak volumes visually and performance-wise… but that’s only part of the package with Adrenaline. The personable demeanor and gracious air of the entire Layton family make you somehow appreciate even more, the Adrenaline DNA baked in to each build from bow to stern, after witnessing their dedication to excellence in quality, consistency and finesse firsthand. Being able to talk fastboats with other intelligent and informed females including Layton’s wife Robin, and their two daughters Kate and Anna was another major plus.

My first glimpse of the ZRX 47 Carbon Series came on opening day right before the rain Gods decided to perform their own opening of the skies, with a nice afternoon water ceremony. Regardless of the raindrop deluge, there was no missing the orange and black all-epoxy, carbon-infused 4-step bottom hull. The 11,000 pounder created and assembled from high-tech CAD and CNC machining methods screams of supercar styling, one example being: the fit and finish of the black billet logos and grab handles behind each row in the six-person cockpit.

The distinct Adrenaline-esque engine hatch of the new model serves as another example, and definitely makes you do a double take. A switch from the prior yellow and grey edition with sunpads placed along the rear, this one is all done up in visual carbon louvers and marine matting up the middle passageway. For those doing a triple take, the staggered Mercury Racing turbocharged 1350-hp powerplants (engine packages range from 1100 hp to 1750 hp per engine) capable of blasting past the 150-mph crescendo, become the next eyeball-expanding reward.

Equally impressive is watching how the entire top cover opens with the push of a button, comparable to the single touch, smart hatch knob located on the center console which electronically pops up the pod leading down to the walk-in cabin.

Adrenaline proprietary electronics including a 10” touch-screen user interface and 12” digital display bedeck the dash of the attention-getter, which is anchored by a 17” Garmin. Throttle placement in the center of the cockpit was also well thought out, and lets the owner and/or driver choose between running solo or sharing duties with a co-pilot on the guns. And speaking of owners, this ZRX is soon to depart for the Middle East to be reacquainted with its owner in Kuwait. Luckily, we have the 47 Reaper to get to know next – and that beast is here to stay!

47 Reaper Center Console

A flawless fabrication feat was repeated on Adrenaline’s first-ever center console designed for British property developer Marcus Cooper. Anna Layton, head of composites, best defined the 47-footer in three words, “It’s elegantly aggressive!”

Paired with five Mercury Racing 450s, the aggression can be felt (even if not heard) from the outboards pumping out 2,250 horsepower. The Reaper plows through any chop in its pathway, peeling waves off its bow while cruising in the 60 mph range or bruising the seas at tops speeds of 80-plus mph… both of which are solid initial running numbers, considering the heft of the 19,000 pound vessel (dry weight with 5 outboards) equipped with a Seakeeper SK3 and 8kw generator.

Over 120 complex molds metamorphosed into a supersonic looking rarity complete with Reaper-branded spoiler mounts, cutting-edge exterior curves, visual carbon creature comforts up and down; and not to forget, an impeccable interior from Miami Prestige. If the ZRX took its styling cues from the supercar world, the Reaper’s galactic glam has been sampled from the aerospace industry.

Five unforgettable features playing into the functionality of hull No. 1 jumped out at me on my first go around on board.

1 - A unique gutter system for water flow was crafted into the flooring and GatorStep marine matting, which allows the freshwater from the rain shower built into the center of the hardtop, to self drain through the cut out grooves.

2 - In addition to the practicality of the gutter drainage, the gas cap instrumentation was fabricated in such a way that any excess spillage filters out of the boat and not in it. And while not related to the filling up mechanism, cosmetically speaking, directly forward of the caps, the configuration of the deck changes shape creating a sleeker transformative front angle view from bow to stern or  vice versa.

3 - It is doors galore on the Reaper and each set serve their own purpose. Midway back, the wind deflectors do their job pushing those forceful gusts around the sides of the boat, protecting guests behind the cockpit from the elements. Dual aft dive doors which tuck perfectly into the rear sides come equipped with shoe and sandal storage pockets, and do their part to simplify docking procedures and make it easier for entering and exiting. The last pair of doors located to port and starboard on the stern, open outward onto the transom, and flip up in an uncomplicated kind of way, for when you need to get to the engines.

4 - Up at the bow, running boards with LEDs underneath have been placed below the padded gunwales allowing the shorter crew members easier access when it comes time to tie off fenders and toss over the lines. And for anyone looking to “cast a line” off the Reaper, this feature would also come in handy. (Adrenaline will also be offering customizable angler-friendly amenities on its future cc builds.)

5 - Under the all-carbon hardtop put together from 14 separate pieces, besides the charging ports on top of the dash, nine flush mounted speakers, and the latest Garmin monitors – the second row of seating is what impressed me. In the middle of each seat were fold-down storage cubicles or compartments for additional quick access storage.

adrenaline powerboats cost

At the time of the show, the lower cabin which features a queen-size berth, separate head, and heaps of space for entertaining was undergoing finishing touches. Hoping it would be complete shortly after the show, I held off on the story. Now as we hit mid May, all I can say is, “Good things come to those who wait!”

And speaking of waiting, everyone is always waiting on the price. The debut 47 Reaper retails for $1.7 million, however entry level into the model starts closer to $1.5 million. Currently six are in production, and the company forecasts production at 10 to 12 per year. Blue and black hull No. 2 with a quad engine package should be done by the end of the summer; Adrenaline was kind enough to provide us a preliminary peek.

Another peek Anna gave me was pertaining to the origins of the Reaper name. It hails from the well-known “reap what you sow” idiom and is also from Galatians 6:7 and Corinthians 9:6 in the New Testament. The meaning behind the biblical dogma and doctrine relates to the long term effect of actions, or more precisely, how hard work comes back to you one way or another. “For the past twenty years, our family has been working hard to develop the Adrenaline Powerboats series, and the reason we named the center console the Reaper is because we believe it’s going to reap what we deserve, after establishing ourselves as a leading brand in the boating industry,” shared Anna.

It appears the Layton’s are absolutely reaping what they’ve sown. A smaller and a larger center console edition – the Reaper 2 and the Reaper 3 – are already on the future radar screen.
