Yacht Walkthrough: 68 De Vries Classic Dutch Yacht

Yacht Walkthrough: 68 De Vries Classic Dutch Yacht

August 12, 2019 1:39 pm

Hello, my name is Tom Hugh-Jones with Denison Yachting and today I’m going to show you a 1953 De Vries Lentsch 68-foot motor yacht, DAKOTA .

DAKOTA was designed by famous naval architect Ed Monk and then built in the De Vries Lentsch shipyard in Amsterdam. Most of those Dutch shipyards were taken over by fed ships. So you’ll find the design very similar to fed ships of that era.

This motor yacht was built of quarter inch steel. The previous owner replaced about 70% of that in Hansen yachts in Seattle in 2004. He spent about a half-million dollars doing so and we’ve just had an ultrasound done of the hull and it’s in great shape.

The boat has two anchors and then up on the bow here you’ll see this horizontal windlass that’ll hold up 300 feet of chain on each side. Behind the windlass these two hatches go down into the forward cabin. On either side of them, are separate storage hatches. And each of these port lights was custom chromed with nickel and fastened with these Robertson screws. The teak deck has been cleaned and treated and because she’s a steel-hulled vessel there’s not a single screw in it.

Walking back there are side deck port and starboard that bring you to the pilot house. After the hull refit was completed in 2004, the boat was then purchased in 2005 by famous Malibu interior designer Michael Lee. He then spent another million dollars on a complete refurbishment. The most notable part of the refit was an extension of the flybridge which then opened up all the space below for the salon. The salon has L-shaped seating the 6 on the portside and beautiful teak throughout. It’s the work of a fine shipwright. Under foot is this woven matting. It’s comfortable and insulates the sound. It makes a change from the usual carpet. Overall this is a full beam salon that is spacious, light and has a lovely vintage charm.

68 De Vries Classic Dutch

Adding to the timeless charm of this boat is this elegantly crafted cockpit in the canoe stern. One of the benefits of a canoe stern is it effectively acts like a bow but in a following sea. The level of joinery here is wonderful. You can see the quality of craftsmanship, the brass, the Samsun post, the lettering in the teak – all done to the very highest level. One especially nice touch is this table. It’s stored vertically here and when pulled out reveals it’s mirror, which gives you a reflection of the ocean. With the table stowed you can see this door that gives you secondary access to the master stateroom. So at the end of a long day, you can retreat to your bunk. Of course when I say bunk, what I actually mean is this beautifully crafted double bed. And if you look at the starboard side of the cabin, you’ll find this cabinetry and the same beautiful woodwork; solid teak in the hands of a master shipper. While on the port side is a sofa. Of course the master stateroom has private access to an ensuite head with a jacuzzi tub. You can see the high quality fittings that manage the both modern and classic. Forward is a second head with a separate shower stall. Over to starboard is this guest cabin which will be a great space for an Irish Wolfhound or a salty sea dog.

Coming up from the lower deck brings you into this cabin which could be used as a dining room or an office. It also contains this very nice NAD stereo system in the cabinet over here. There are windows running full length both port and starboard which drop down in the center to provide cross-breeze ventilation. Underfoot is this carpet which is very nautical and beneath that a classic Teak & Holly Sole.

classic dutch yachts

Opening this hatch gives you access to the engine room, which we will revisit later. Forward of the dining cabin is the ship’s galley which is fully equipped with this Viking range, Miele dishwasher and two sub-zero fridge/freezers. It also has a sofa on the port side so you can keep the chef’s company, a plenty of storage in these cabinets. There is also a Splendide washer/dryer.

Finally in the very bow of the boat is this third stateroom with two guest berths. This is not actually a steam room; it’s another head which is currently being used for storage.

Coming back to the upper deck brings you to the pilot house which has been reequipped but her heart remains as it did in 1953. At the center is this original ship’s wheel – solid wooden brass. On the starboard side of the helm, you have the throttles and transmission, side power bow thruster and a Simrad auto pilot. Flank in the wheel, are these traditional engine stop/start buttons. Above the wheel is this handle to rotate the spotlight. On the port side is a Raymarine 120 and these two traditional chart tables.

68 De Vries Classic Dutch

Below are control panels for two Northern Lights generators, 12 kW and 5 kW which is plenty of power to run this boat. When you’re not on generator, you can switch over to shore power. Dakota is powered by a pair of Detroit Diesel 6-71 natural engines that were both rebuilt in 2005 as part of the restoration. These engines will run the boat at around 8-knots with a fuel burn of about 4-gallons an hour.

On the starboard side of the pilothouse, this ladder takes you up to the flybridge. Up here you can appreciate the extra space the extended bridge provides. It’s uncovered for now but there is a frame for a Bimini should you desire one. Back there is a 13-foot zodiac tender powered by a 40 horsepower Honda outboard. And notice there are davits both port and starboard, so it’s easy to launch on either side.

A couple of other points to note, we hauled DAKOTA out for bottom paint in May 2019 and had a survey done at the same time. It shows she’s in great shape for classic. So there you are 1953 De Vries Lentsch 68-foot motor yacht. Steel hull, classic lines, vintage beauty.

If you’d like to know more about DAKOTA or take a look at her yourself, call me. I’m Tom Hugh-Jones, Denison Yachting.

The Very Best of Dutch Yacht Builders

OCEANCO YACHTS

Dutch yacht builders have crafted a reputation as being among the world’s very best, with an extraordinary density of high quality, high value shipyards operating out of the Netherlands.

Part of the reason for the dominance of Dutch yacht builders in the superyacht industry stems from Holland’s prestigious history of boat building, which stretches back centuries and was perfectly poised to make the shift to constructing luxury yachts during the 20th century. The word ‘yacht’ originally comes from the Dutch word ‘jacht’, meaning hunt.

Some of the towering names of the yachting world have emerged from Holland, with the great heritage yards Amels, Hakvoort, Royal Huisman, De Vries and Royal Van Lent more recently joined by other outstanding Dutch yacht builders such as Heesen, Vitters, and Oceanco.

Dutch shipyards are heralded not only for their world-class build quality, high tech yards, and innovation, but are also renowned for reliability in finishing projects on time and on budget. With Dutch shipyards producing many fully-custom ‘one-off’ yachts, many of the yachts launched from Holland’s shipyards are extremely iconic and often win international awards.

Dutch yacht builders have also capitalized on their individual reputations for quality construction by forming strong collaborations including Feadship and HISWA, which serve to market the best of Dutch yachting internationally, thereby growing the influence of the Dutch yacht builders.

Notable Dutch Yacht Builders

Dutch yacht builders Feadship yacht ANNA

This prestige brand is often known as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of yacht builders, constructing fully custom yachts from a ‘blank slate’ beginning. Feadship is actually a partnership between two of the greatest Dutch shipyards: De Vries and Royal Van Lent, with yacht building roots dating back to 1849. The Feadship fleet today is more than 450 strong, and includes some ground-breaking yachts including AQUARIUS and ECTASEA.

Dutch yacht builders Amels yacht IMAGINE

Dutch yacht builders Vitters yacht HOEK DESIGN MARIE

One of the most respected names in sailing, the Vitters shipyard was founded in 1990 and has gone on to launch luxury sailing yachts known for winning superyacht regattas and international design awards. Constructing yachts over 30m with an uncompromising focus on quality and design, Vitters has received accolades for yachts including SARISSA, GANESHA and AQUIJO. Vitters also owns the Green Marine yard, which is responsible for building the Volvo Ocean Race fleet.

Dutch yacht builders Oceanco yacht WELLESLEY

This Dutch yacht builder specializes in the large yacht market, constructing fully custom superyachts over 260’ (80m) in aluminum and steel. Oceanco opened its doors in 1990 and has been responsible for the launch of some of the industry’s most well-known yachts, including ALFA NERO, ANASTASIA and the largest Dutch yacht to be built thus far, the 360’ (110m) JUBILEE.

Esmeralda, a beautiful, 24 meters canoe stern really justifies the term motor sailor. Giving the best of both worlds, she offers you a quiet and comfortable cruise, whether sailing or cruising steadily on her powerful engine, keeping her movements to a minimum thanks to her Koopnautic stabilizers. Her steel hull, aluminium superstructure and wide beam provide a safe and sturdy passage for her fortunate guests, and her tank capacity gives her a transatlantic range.  Never been chartered, she is still in the capable hands of her first and only owner who ordered her built. Just two years ago she was freshly painted (Awlgrip, done at Trehar in Antibes) and during that time her teak deck was completely renewed and new carpets and upholstery were fitted. A full beam owners suite, a large upper deck saloon, comfortable living quarters, a sheltered dining area on the main deck and spacious crew quarters are but a few of the features she offers.

TRULY CLASSIC

Combining the elegance of the 1930s with modern underwater hull configurations, Truly Classic yachts are built in semi series. The idea behind the Truly Classic concept is that clients can base their new yacht on an existing proven hull design where the majority of the design decisions have already been made.  The yachts can then be built semi custom where the interior- and deck layout, draft and sailplan can be customized. The central design concept calls for a flush deck boat with an aft cockpit, low deckhouse, sweeping sheer, moderate freeboard and long overhangs to bow and stern. Other features shared by all Truly Classics are their keyhole shaped cockpits, fingertip control, exceptional balance and an optimal use of interior volume. The idea and name for these boats came from a yacht created in partnership with the late Michael Peacock, former captain of the British Admiral’s Cup team. Launched in 1994, Truly Classic (later Zephyr, now named Savy) set new standards by winning the Spirit of Tradition Class at Antigua Classic Week three years in a row, as well as the overall “Med Cup” for Spirit of Tradition yachts. This success attracted other owners interested in a similar concept in various sizes, and Truly Classic has since become that rarest of breeds in the yachting industry – a brand name in its own right.

Dutch Olympic Officials Will Deny Golfers From Competition in Paris

Amazing bunker shot on 18 propels riley grimm to victory.

  • Anne van Dam

Dewi Weber

Dutch Olympic officials are keeping home two male and one female players from the golf competition in Paris because they believe their world ranking is too low for them to have a realistic chance against 60-player fields.

The Netherlands Golf Federation said Tuesday it presented “extensive arguments and data” in a June 14 meeting with the Dutch committee that oversees the Olympics, hopeful of showing unique differences in golf compared with other sports.

“According to them, it has not been demonstrated that there is a reasonable chance of a top-eight ranking during the Olympic Games,” the NGF said in a statement.

The decision means Joost Luiten and Darius Van Driel will not be going to Paris. It’s the second straight Olympics that Dutch officials have kept golfers home for not being ranked among the top 100 in the world.

Most telling about the Dutch decision is what happened at the Tokyo Olympics. Rory Sabbatini qualified at No. 161 in the world and shot 61 in the final round to win the silver medal in a historic day for Slovakian golf.

C.T. Pan of Taiwan won a seven-man playoff — which included Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa — to win the bronze. Pan qualified at No. 181 in the world.

Olympic qualifying is based on the Official World Golf Ranking. Countries are allowed two players — four if all are among the top 15 — until the 60-player field is filled.

For the Tokyo Games, the Netherlands had set a standard of players being among the top 100 in the world or the top 36 in the Olympic ranking for them to compete. Luiten was No. 177 and Wil Besseling was No. 221 when qualifying ended.

This year, Luiten was No. 40 in the Olympic ranking, with a world ranking of No. 147. Anne Van Dam, who is No. 108 in the women’s world ranking and No. 34 in the Olympic ranking, will be the only Dutch golfer. The Netherlands Olympic Committee will not be sending Dewi Weber, who is No. 302 in the world.

The 38-year-old Luiten is a six-time winner on the European tour who has qualified for 21 majors — including the Masters twice — and last year tied for 71st in the British Open.

The absence of Dutch golfers mean the male players will be replaced by Joel Girrbach of Switzerland (No. 366 in the world) and Tapio Pulkkanen of Finland (No. 378) from the reallocation reserve list.

Besseling, in an interview two summers ago at the U.S. Open where he tied for 56th at The Country Club, had hoped Dutch officials would change the criteria. He said it was a “stupid rule to make.”

The International Golf Federation sent a detailed letter in support of the Dutch golfers for the June 14 meeting, trying to explain that margins are so thin in golf that players well outside the top 100 can win on any given week.

“It is common for lower-ranked players to make a significant impact in major tournaments, defying their current standings,” the IGF letter said. “There are numerous examples of players who are lower ranked on OWGR who perform well in big events.”

Seven players ranked outside the top 100 in the world have won PGA Tour events that offered full FedEx Cup points this year. That list includes Nick Dunlap, who was an amateur still in college when he won The American Express against a field that included Scottie Scheffler.

The Dutch committee — formally the Netherlands Olympic Committee/Netherlands Sports Federation — tweaked its criteria for sending golfers to the 2024 Olympics.

For men, anyone finishing outside the top 27 in the Olympic ranking would have to record a top-eight finish in a tournament — provided that tournament had five players from the top 50 in the world or 10 from the top 100. Anything less would require a top-four finish.

The European tour, where Luiten and Van Driel plays, rarely gets that many from the top 100 in a world ranking that has been more heavily skewed toward the PGA Tour in the last year.

Luiten has five top-20 finishes this year, including a tie for 14th in the Dubai Invitational, where Tommy Fleetwood defeated McIlroy by one shot.

Van Driel won the Magical Kenya Open in February for his first European tour win. That tournament had only two players from the top 100.

(Editor's Note): International Golf Federation Statement

The International Golf Federation released the following statement on Wednesday:

"The International Golf Federation (IGF) is extremely disappointed for our three qualified athletes who will miss out on competing at Paris 2024 due to the decision by the Dutch Olympic Committee and Dutch Sports Federations (NOC*NSF) on Tuesday.

Dewi Weber, Joost Luiten and Darius Van Driel all earned the right to compete in the Olympic golf competition at Paris 2024 based on their impressive play over the two-year qualifying period. However, the NOC*NSF created an additional – and, in the opinion of the IGF, unnecessary – criterion that prevented the selection of these three qualified athletes.

The IGF is confident that the data and supporting information provided to the NOC*NSF by the Netherlands Golf Federation clearly demonstrated how these three athletes all have the ability to contend for a top-eight finish in the Olympic golf competition. Unfortunately, unless the NOC*NSF reverses course, the use of this unnecessary addition to the qualification process – unique to the NOC*NSF – will now unfairly prevent these three athletes from competing in the world’s greatest sporting event, the Olympic Games."

The International Golf Federation Board is currently composed of 10 members who convene regularly:

  • Annika Sorenstam (President, IGF Board)
  • Guy Kinnings (CEO, PGA European Tour)
  • Claudia Garduño (Director, Mexican Golf Federation)
  • Nobuko Hirayama (Member, Japan Golf Association)
  • Will Jones (Executive Director, Augusta National Golf Club)
  • Mollie Marcoux Samaan (Commissioner, LPGA)
  • Jay Monahan (Commissioner, PGA Tour)
  • Martin Slumbers (CEO, R&A)
  • Seth Waugh (CEO, PGA of America)
  • Michael Whan (CEO, USGA)

We know that this weekend’s forecast for the next several days is a bit on the sketchy side, with some rain forecasted.

But will that stop us from getting out there and doing a whole bunch of stuff?

Absolutely not, because it’s still summer in Maine. Plus, we all know that if you want the weather to change here, you just need to give it a minute.
