What could Bill Gates do with the $860M he isn't spending on a superyacht?

TORONTO -- Despite what you may have read, Bill Gates is not buying a first-of-its-kind superyacht.

Recent media reports have linked the Microsoft co-founder to the Aqua, which is believed to be the first hydrogen-powered luxury yacht in the world.

According to Sinot , the company developing the superyacht, the 112-metre-long Aqua will contain an onboard spa, gym and hydro massage room as well as several bedrooms and a 14-seat fine dining area, among many other amenities.

A number of media organizations, primarily in the U.K., have reported that Gates plans to buy the first Aqua for approximately 500 million pounds, which works out to about $860 million Canadian.

However, Sinot says there is no truth to any of these claims.

In a statement posted to its website on Monday, the yachtmaker says Aqua "is not linked to Mr. Gates (or his representatives) in any form or manner" and the company has "no business relationship" with the famed tech mogul.

"Unfortunately, all 'information' in these recent articles is incorrect," the statement concludes.

Given that vigorous denial, it seems fair to assume that Gates is indeed not about to purchase the first Aqua yacht – but if he does have US$645 million burning a hole in his pocket, there are plenty of other things he could spend it on.

The world's first "giga-mansion" is currently under construction in the ritzy Los Angeles neighbourhood of Bel Air. When it is complete this summer, it will reportedly include 20 bedrooms, 30 bathrooms, five swimming pools and its own nightclub. Gates could pay its US$500-million list price and still have more than enough left over to buy the US$115-million estate that was once home to Sonny and Cher.

The yacht's purchase price isn't enough for Gates to join his former Microsoft colleague Steve Ballmer in the NBA owners' club – Ballmer paid US$2 billion to acquire the Los Angeles Clippers in 2014 – but it would be just about enough for him to buy his way into the NHL. The hockey league's new franchise in Seattle, which starts play in 2021, is paying a US$650-million expansion fee to join the club; surely the clout of having Gates as an owner could convince the league to give him a tiny discount.

Of course, there are other ways to spend huge sums of money that may seem a little more near and dear to Gates' heart.

Last week, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced that it will spend up to US$100 million to help find a vaccine for the COVID-19 coronavirus and improve treatment options for patients. The foundation has spent more than double that in the past decade on efforts to improve sanitation technology in parts of the world where indoor plumbing may not exist. In 2018, he pledged US$1 billion of the foundation's money to the fight against malaria .

Add those commitments up, and the result isn't just enough to buy the world's first hydrogen-powered superyacht at its reported purchase price – it's enough to land the second one, too.

Jeff Bezos' three-masted, $500 million superyacht will be one of the biggest ever built.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has ordered a massive yacht at Oceanco Shipyard in the Netherlands, according to international media reports. He has also placed an order for a wide (75 meter) support vessel.

The billionaire founder of Amazon , Jeff Bezos, is about to enter the illustrious ranks of the haves and have-yachts.

The world's wealthiest man is about to become the proud owner of one of the most luxurious and lavish superyachts ever constructed. The boat, recognized only by its project code Y721 , will be as long as the Great Pyramid of Giza and filled with state-of-the-art treasures including an in-deck swimming pool and a "ambient" theater, all adding to a rumored $500 million price tag.

Jeff Bezos' $500 million superyacht will be one of the biggest ever built.

Bezos, who is worth an estimated $200 billion, will now be responsible for an average operating expense of $50 million. The luxury sailing ship's plans are being kept under wraps, but some reports have recently surfaced on the website of its Netherlands-based maker, Oceanco, as well as on enthusiast forums. According to the information available so far, it could be based on the 106-meter Black Pearl , pictured below, which is actually the world's largest and most technologically advanced sailing yacht.

It will be operated by three massive masts which will extend over many decks. Because of the sails, it will not have a helipad; instead, rumors claim it will arrive with its ownyacht, in a twist worthy of the richest Bond villain. A separate support vessel with a dedicated landing facility has been commissioned by Bezos and his colleague Lauren Sanchez .

As the urban elite invest in ever more expensive vessels to escape the masses in opulence and anonymity, the luxury yacht market has thrived during the pandemic .

After spending time on Eos , another three-masted schooner owned by film and Fox TV billionaire Barry Diller and his wife Diane Von Furstenberg , the celebrated fashion designer, in 2019, Bezos is said to have placed the order before the virus struck.

He was later photographed with model Karlie Kloss , Josh Kushner , and former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein on David Geffen 's yacht in the Balearics .

Bezos isn't low on cash, and according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, he contributed to his considerable fortune last week by selling almost $2 billion worth of his company's stock. Bloomberg journalist Brad Stone reveals more information about the ship in his upcoming book on Bezos, Amazon Unbound , which is also likely to play a central role in Bezos' life as he steps away from running the online behemoth he developed.

“What did the future bring for their founder?” he writes. At least a portion of the solution can be found in the shipyards of Oceanco, a Dutch custom yacht manufacturer. Outside of Rotterdam, a new development was quietly taking shape: a 127-meter-long, three-mast schooner about which nothing was understood, even among luxury boat makers, except that when it was finished, it would be one of the finest sailing yachts in the world .”

Bezos' superyacht is hull Y721 , which is currently being designed at Oceanco. We will reveal that the yacht will be styled similarly to Barry Diller's sailing yacht EOS (which measures 93 meters (305 feet) in length).

On the aft deck of the yacht, there would be a big swimming pool. The yacht is expected to hold 18 visitors, who will be served by a crew of about 40 people. In 2022, the yacht will be launced. The design of Bezos' yacht would be identical to that of the (smaller) sailing yacht EOS .

The 127-meter ship with three masts is expected to cost more than $500 million .

Support Vessel

According to reports in the international press, Bezos has also placed an order for a massive support vessel . This is the 75-meter (246-foot) Hull YS7512 , which is currently being designed at Damen Yachting .

In a press kit, Gerrit van Katwijk provided a photo of the Y721 Hull, as well as a rendering of the support vessel.

The custom-built vessel would transport all of the key yacht's toys and tenders. It has a helicopter hangar with enough room for a big helicopter. You may not think you have anything in common with the 29-year-old stand-up comedian son of a billionaire, but it turns out Pete Ballmer may have a few tips for all of us when it comes to money and relationships.

Ballmer is the son of Steve Ballmer, the former CEO of Microsoft and current owner of the L.A. Clippers basketball team. In a conversation with Business Insider, he shared how his father’s $121 billion net worth has impacted his romantic relationships.

“I can tell when some people consider me only as an asset, someone it'd be good to stay connected with,” he told the publication. “I feel like there have been enough times where it's like a sixth sense by now.”

You may not have Ballmer’s bank account, but his experience does speak to some universal truths about the insidious ways money can ruin relationships.

Childhood affects finances in relationships

The topic of money — especially the specifics of his father’s great wealth — generally left him feeling uneasy.

“I was deeply uncomfortable with all of this for the longest time,” Ballmer told the hosts of the Cash Cuties podcast.

And so Ballmer struggled making friends growing up, as he never knew if people were more attracted to his wealth than him. Romantic relationships, surprisingly, came easier for him.

Dating apps are relatively anonymous, only requiring a first name and some pictures, which allowed Ballmer to date without the baggage of his last name.

Eventually, after the second or third date and he’d had a chance to get a feel for the person and sense that they weren’t materialistic, Ballmer would spill the beans about his family and their wealth.

Even when you don’t come from great wealth, having these money talks early on in a relationship is important. And it’s important to remember your formative childhood experiences with money often determine your attitude toward it in adulthood.

For instance, a University of Pittsburgh researcher discovered that teens often have behavioral and mental health issues when their parents struggle with money. If you’re someone who grew up in a financially unstable home, then you may still get stressed out around money because of how you grew up around it. It may even trigger old teenage behaviors and mental health issues. Your partner may not understand why you get moody when the monthly credit card bill comes.

This is why Kathleen Burns Kingsbury, a wealth psychology expert, told CNBC that couples need to take each other through their own “money island,” explaining how they think about money, what they learned about it as a kid and what makes sense to them.

Splitting the bills

Ballmer has been dating the same woman for almost two years and lives with her in a two-bedroom apartment in San Francisco. They split everything evenly and haven’t merged their finances yet.

“If I were dating someone who proposed proportional spending, I would feel a little miffed and feel that perhaps they saw part of the deal with dating me as a benefit to their lifestyle,” he told Business Insider.

But many couples don’t want to split their bills 50/50. A 2023 survey from Thriving Center of Psychology discovered that half of cohabitating couples don’t split their mortgage or rent equally.

However, just 37% of the Thriving survey respondents say their relationship is “financially unequal.” That’s because there’s often a difference in these situations between aiming for a division of expenses that’s equal and one that’s fair.

Regardless of what anyone else might think, you and your partner need to figure out a division you can both be happy with. Bread Financial discovered in a recent survey that 41% of people wish they shared a more similar financial mindset with their partner.

Differences in financial attitudes can lead to issues down the line, like “financial infidelity,” where one person in the relationship chooses to hide purchases or debts from their partner. Financial infidelity is so common that almost half of respondents in the Bread Financial survey admitted to it. This kind of lying may seem harmless, but it can lead to breakups or even identity theft issues in extreme cases.

From a horseback-riding model to a newbie venture capitalist: Meet the children of Apple cofounder Steve Jobs

• Steve Jobs left the bulk of his fortune to his wife, Laurene Powell Jobs, when he died in 2011.
• The pair have three children, and Jobs has a daughter from a previous relationship, as well. 
• His only son, Reed Jobs, founded a VC firm dedicated to investing in cancer treatments in 2023.

Steve Jobs is arguably the most influential tech leader in the history of modern computing. 

In 1976, after he dropped out of college, Jobs cofounded Apple with his high-school friend, Steve Wozniak, while they were still in their 20s, according to "Steve Jobs," a biography by Walter Isaacson.

Jobs helped turn Apple from a makeshift computer manufacturer housed inside his parents' garage to a global tech giant now worth more than $3 trillion.

Jobs was also the father of four children. He had his oldest, Lisa Brennan-Jobs, with his high-school girlfriend, Chrisann Brennan. Later, he had Reed Jobs , Erin Jobs, and Eve Jobs with his wife, Laurene Powell Jobs. 

Jobs was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2003, and died eight years later at 56, ABC News reported , leaving the majority of his fortune to Powell Jobs.

She does not plan to share her inheritance with her children. "I'm not interested in legacy wealth buildings," she said in an interview with The New York Times .

"Steve wasn't interested in that," she told the Times. "If I live long enough, it ends with me." 

Each of Jobs' children received millions of dollars from their father, the Times reported , and might be considered "nepo babies" — a label popularized by a New York Magazine story about Hollywood actors who rose to fame thanks, in part, to their family connections. 

While Jobs' children have largely pursued careers outside of tech, from modeling to writing, it's likely their family name contributed to their success. 

Apple, Laurene Powell Jobs, and Reed Jobs did not reply to requests for comment, nor did representatives for Lisa Brennan-Jobs and Eve Jobs. Erin Jobs could not be reached.

Laurene Powell Jobs

Laurene Powell Jobs inherited the majority of Jobs' fortune when he died in 2011 — including his lucrative stakes in Apple and Disney.

Today, her net worth is estimated at $11.2 billion, per Bloomberg's Billionaire Index . 

Powell Jobs first met Jobs when she was an MBA student at Stanford in 1989, according to Isaacson's biography. Jobs was giving a guest lecture at the university when his future wife and her friend snuck into the lecture late and ended up sitting next to the Apple cofounder.

Powell Jobs later told Isaacson that the Apple cofounder "was not that big of a deal to me" and that she initially had him mixed up with Bill Gates. At the time, Jobs was working at Next, a computer-workstation company that was later bought by Apple.

Jobs recalled seeing this "beautiful girl" sitting next to him and later followed her to the parking lot. She agreed to a dinner date that night that turned into the two spending the night together, Isaacson wrote. Less than two years later, they got married.

During their marriage, the couple had three children: Reed, Erin, and Eve.

Since Jobs' death, Powell Jobs has been active in philanthropy and founded Emerson Collective in 2004 as a "social change organization." She has served on the boards of several nonprofits, including Teach for America and Conservation International, and has made donations to members of the Democratic Party.

Her hobbies reportedly include sailing on The Venus — a yacht her late husband commissioned before his death — art collecting, and beekeeping.

Powell Jobs has also taken an interest in media. In 2017, she acquired a majority stake in The Atlantic magazine for over $100 million, per The Wall Street Journal. She also owns stakes in the sports teams the NBA Wizards and NHL Capitals .

In June, Powell Jobs bought her fourth property in 10 years in Malibu. The 3,399-square-foot oceanfront estate cost her $94 million, according to the LA Times .

Despite her billionaire status, Powell Jobs has said she doesn't plan to pass on her fortune to any of her children. 

"Steve wasn't interested in that. If I live long enough, it ends with me," she told The New York Times in 2020. "I inherited my wealth from my husband, who didn't care about the accumulation of wealth. I am doing this in honor of his work, and I've dedicated my life to doing the very best I can to distribute it effectively, in ways that lift up individuals and communities in a sustainable way."

Lisa Brennan-Jobs

Even though Lisa Brennan-Jobs received millions from her father, The New York Times reported, she did not always benefit from her wealthy father.

Lisa, now 46, is Steve Jobs' first daughter. Her mother, Chrisann Brennan, who is a painter and memoirist, was Jobs' high-school sweetheart.

For years, Jobs denied that he was Brennan-Jobs' father and provided little financial or emotional support to her and her mother when Apple took off, per The New York Times . As a result, Brennan went on welfare and cleaned houses to support her daughter, according to Vanity Fair .

Despite the initial neglect, Brennan-Jobs moved in with Jobs as a teenager so they could work on their relationship, according to the Times. Still, she said they didn't spend much time together.

After high school, Brennan-Jobs attended Harvard (which she admitted she might have gotten into because she dropped her father's name during the admission interview, per the Times). She then moved to London and Italy to work in finance, pivoted to a design role, and then switched to freelance writing for magazines and literary journals, according to the Times .

Brennan-Jobs' major breakthrough as a writer came in 2018 when she published "Small Fry," a memoir that dives deep into her tumultuous relationship with her father. In it, she writes about the times he treated her poorly, from initially denying that his Apple Lisa computer was named after her to saying that she smelled "like a toilet."

Despite all the turmoil, Brennan-Jobs said that she is "grateful" for her upbringing, per the Times .

She is now married to Bill Morein, a Microsoft employee turned tech-startup founder. They have three kids – Morein's two daughters from a previous relationship and a son they had together, according to the Times .

Reed Jobs — named after the university his father attended before dropping out, according to Walter Isaacson's biography — is the son of Jobs and Laurene Powell Jobs, born just months after the two got married. 

Of his four children, Steve Jobs was closest to the 32-year-old, which came at the cost of his relationships with his daughters, according to Isaacson's biography.

Even though his father raised him without an emphasis on money, it was impossible for Reed and his siblings to avoid the privileges of being rich. 

Larry Ellison, the cofounder of Oracle who's worth $158 billion and was a close friend of Steve Jobs, would frequently take the Jobs family out on joy rides on his many luxury yachts, according to Isaacson's biography. Ironically, Reed would call Ellison "our rich friend." 

Reed was also exposed to his father's business early on. When he was a senior in high school, his father took him to Hawaii so he could "be in the room with the best people in the world making really tough decisions," like Apple executives and other high-level tech moguls, per Isaacson's biography.

"I want you to be in every single one because you'll learn more in those two days than you would in two years at business school," Steve Jobs said, according to Isaacson. 

In 2014, Reed got his bachelor's degree in history and international security from Stanford University — a favorite of wealthy tech offspring like Steve Ballmer's son Peter and Eric Schmidt's daughter, Sophie, and where his mother attended business school — then stayed for another year to get his master's in history.

After receiving his master's degree in 2015, Reed worked at the Emerson Collective — the philanthropic and impact investing organization his mother founded — as a managing director, leading a team that invests money into cancer research.

In August 2023, Reed announced he was leaving Emerson work at a venture capital fund named Yosemite, where he continued to lead investments in new cancer treatments. Yosemite raised more than $200 million to invest in cancer care, The Wall Street Journal . His investments include a startup that helps patients compare the cost of medical services called Turquoise Health.

Erin Siena Jobs

Erin Siena Jobs is the most private of Steve Jobs' children.

The 28-year-old does not appear to have any public profiles on social media, though her younger sister, Eve, posted a picture of Erin on Instagram for her birthday in 2021.

"To my lifelong best friend — happy birthday!!" Eve wrote next to an old picture of the two sisters on a boat that has since been deleted. "I love you I love you I love you."

In Isaacson's biography on Steve Jobs, the writer described Erin as "quiet, introspective."

Erin told Isaacson she sometimes wished she could have had more of her father's attention, but "he does his best to be both a father and the CEO of Apple, and he juggles those pretty well."

Twenty-five-year-old Eve Jobs, the youngest of Steve Jobs' children, is a model and an accomplished equestrian.

Unlike her older sister Erin, Eve is used to being in the spotlight. In 2020, she started her modeling career with a Glossier ad campaign alongside "Euphoria" star Sydney Sweeney and "RuPaul's Drag Race" finalist Naomi Smalls, Vanity Fair reported .

In 2022, she signed with DNA Model Management — the same agency that represents Kaia Gerber and Emily Ratajkowski — and attended Paris Fashion Week, per Elle Magazine and Vogue . Eve starred in an edgy fashion campaign for the luxury streetwear brand Enfants Riches Déprimés in February.

Prior to launching a modeling career, Eve attended Stanford University — the same school her brother attended and where her mom got her MBA. She graduated in 2021 after studying science technology and society, Harper's Bazaar reported .

During her college years, Eve was ranked No. 5 on the list of the top 1,000 riders under 25 around the world by Horse Sport in 2019. A year later, she said in an interview with World of Showjumping that "being able to compete in the Olympics and World Equestrian Games would be a dream." 

She is one of many nepo babies to take up horseback riding — from Bill Gates' daughter to Michael Dell's . In 2016, her mother bought a $15 million ranch in Wellington, Florida, where she frequently competes and trains with a top equestrian coach, Missy Clark, BI previously reported.

Steve Jobs told Isaacson he envisioned his youngest daughter running Apple someday or becoming president of the United States. 

"She's a pistol and has the strongest will of any kid I've ever met," he told Isaacson.
