Maxus 35: Redefining Sport Cruiser Expectations with Northman Shipyard

Northman Shipyard has been building yachts over 33 feet since 2007. The inaugural yacht in this category, the Maxus 33, debuted in 2007, marking the inception of a line that has since garnered acclaim within the sailing community. Following its introduction, the Maxus 33 underwent a comprehensive redesign in 2011, resulting in the rebranded Maxus 33.1RS. In a strategic departure from previous designs, Northman Shipyard recently unveiled its latest innovation, the Maxus 35, marking a significant advancement in the cruiser segment.

Distinguished by its distinctive features and cruiser identity, the Maxus 35 embodies a fusion of contemporary design elements and enduring functionality. Notable highlights include expansive interiors, illuminated cabin spaces, concealed rigging mechanisms, dual steering systems, and a sleek, modern hull profile, all of which contribute to its commanding presence on the water.

Designed by the D&S Yacht Design office, comprising Jacek Daszkiewicz and Krzysztof Smaga, the Maxus 35 exhibits a distinctive hull configuration characterized by a pronounced upturned aft section and an elevated bow. This unique design imparts a heightened freeboard, particularly prominent at the bow, accentuating the vessel’s overall aesthetic appeal. Additionally, the elevated cabin superstructure, extending forward with a continuous window strip reminiscent of a deck saloon yacht, further distinguishes the Maxus 35’s design language, albeit catering to individual tastes with its bold and assertive demeanor.

The Maxus 35 offers versatility in keel configurations, with options for long and short L-shape keels, as well as alternative chine keels facilitating dry berthing and land storage. Crafted meticulously by hand using GRP materials, the hulls and decks exemplify Northman Shipyard’s commitment to quality craftsmanship and enduring durability. The mast placement, featuring two spreaders and shrouds affixed directly to the hull exterior, contributes to the vessel’s balanced performance characteristics, with a focus on sail handling and maneuverability.

Despite its emphasis on sport cruising comfort, the Maxus 35 does not compromise on interior amenities, offering configurations with two or three cabins, complemented by a dedicated shower cabin in the two-cabin layout. The interior exudes modernity, bathed in natural light, evoking a sense of tranquility and sophistication. Equipped with a fully functional kitchenette boasting induction hob, refrigerator, sink, and ample storage provisions, the Maxus 35 caters to discerning sailors seeking personalized luxury experiences.

Northman yachts may be the best choice for a family cruise

Northman displacement yachts from the Polish shipyard of the same name are incredibly attractive in terms of price and performance. The flagship is the Northman 1200, which has a LOA of 12.2m and can be supplied in a variety of diesel engine combinations as well as being fully electric.

Boats with a similar design are often referred to as modern trawlers. Despite having a lower deadrise than classic trawler yachts, the Northman 1200 is Category B (Offshore) certified and is capable of fairly safe passage in moderately stormy weather across open waters. Although basically, of course, it is ideal for calm cruises on inland waterways and coastal areas closed from bad weather.

The cruising speed of the boat is 8 knots. At this speed, the ride is very pleasant and the engine noise is practically not disturbing. With diesel engine 110 hp fuel consumption is about 9 liters per hour. You can opt for a 150 hp engine, then this will allow you to accelerate to a maximum of 13.5 knots, if you can turn a blind eye to fuel consumption.

The electric version of the yacht is fine for a two-day cruise, if, of course, there are breaks for picnics, swimming and sleeping. After that, you will need an outlet for recharging.

The Northman 1200 boasts a superb and harmonious design with an asymmetric cockpit with a portside ladder to the sunbathing area on the roof. In another configuration, it may be a flybridge with a steering post.

There are some details that I would like to correct, for example, the interior contains sharp corners in some places, which could be rounded off if the yacht wants to claim open waters. But in general, there is nothing to complain about. The salon is very bright, equipped with an electric sunroof and even has a sliding door near the helm station. All equipment is perfectly integrated and easily accessible.

Despite its modest size (if you remove the bathing platform, the length of the boat will be 10.5 m), the Northman 1200 has three double cabins. The master cabin is located in the bow, and two guest cabins are located symmetrically on the port and starboard side.

What else I would like to note from the really important details, in addition to the interior and other little things, is the long protruding keel, which not only gives stability on the course, but also protects the propeller from accidental damage. The hull of the boat is made of GRP and the keel can also protect it by taking a hit on itself in the event of a collision with an underwater obstacle. This greatly increases the likelihood that in this case you will not only stay afloat with an intact hull, but also return to your home port under your own power.

The Northman 1200 Flybridge is the latest model from Northman Shipyard. The design of the flybridge is 18 cm higher compared to the Northman 1200. Do you enjoy steering outside? This makes the Flybridge version possible, giving you a great view. In addition to a spacious steering position, the Flybridge also has a U-shaped bench, which can easily be converted into a sun bed. The Flybridge is easy to access with just two steps, which is unique feature. The flybridge can optionally be equipped with a removable table, fridge, and navigation plotter. The living area of the Northman 1200 Flybridge can be extended by opening the doors to the aft deck. Inside there is a comfortable sitting area with dining table, a kitchen as you are used to at home and lots of light in the living room. Below deck there are 3 double cabins and two bathrooms. An outdoor shower can be found on the bathing platform. This yacht stands for relaxation, because there is a lounge on the sun deck, on the foredeck, and then there are the benches in the cabin, you can choose your own place of tranquillity! The Northman 1200 Flybridge can be electrically powered with the option of a Fuel Cell range extender, which means that you can sail without emissions and extremely comfortable. The Fuel Cell ensures that you always have enough energy on board and that you are independent of shore power. This allows you to enjoy the freedom to boat wherever you want.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.
