Owner Review: Rolex Yacht-Master 40 126622

What's it like to wear the rolex yacht-master.

Before we get to my Rolex Yacht-Master 40 126622 review, we need some background. In 1992 Rolex introduced a watch that shared the silhouette of their beloved Submariner but in solid 18k yellow gold, embossed YG bezel insert soldered to the bezel, funky white dial, and the unusual name “Yacht-Master” written where “Submariner” would normally live. People then and now still wonder.. “Why?”.

Rumor has it Rolex wanted to drastically update the Submariner but were scared that the changes were too extreme. The Submariner was essentially their poster child and arguably their most iconic watch. Fearing backlash, they created a whole new line. Rolex rarely creates completely new watches, the last time they made a new watch before the Rolex Yacht-Master was in 1964 when the Daytona was introduced. Luckily it paid off as the Yacht-Master was pretty well received!

Even though the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 at first glance looks very similar to the Submariner it’s a totally different wearing experience. The case shape is completely different from the Sub. Its case profile is composed of compound curves with the lugs swooping downwards very similar to a Daytona, the case is also fully polished. My particular Rolex Yacht-Master 40 126622 being Roleisum (Rolex’s term for the combination of Platinum and Steel which was first introduced in 1999 with the ref. 16622), in combination with the blue sunburst dial and red accents, gives it such a unique aesthetic it sets it apart in Rolex’s catalog. Rolex I think perfected their blue dials, it’s absolutely gorgeous! Pictures do not do it justice whatsoever. In person, it appears much darker, almost black however in direct light that’s when the striking blue hue pops. The date function is also very convenient!

What is it like to wear a Rolex Yacht-Master? I would describe it as the most comfortable and stressful watch I have ever worn and owned. What most people don’t realize is that it’s a thin watch and I mean THIN. At 11.5mm it’s just as thin or even thinner than a 34mm 114200 Air-King! Like what? The case hugs your wrist amazingly while the oyster bracelet seems to caress you. It makes you want to wear it every single day, I mean how could you not? Thin, sporty, beautiful, comfortable and low key a strap monster. Until you see a scratch or nick on the solid Platinum bezel insert, call up Rolex Service Center to see how much it would be to replace it and they slap you in the face with a $2500 (before taxes) quote for JUST the bezel/bezel insert assembly (they’re soldered together remember?). Then you think “Okay, okay which Seiko ’s do I sell to cover the cost of a freaking bezel”. Did I mention the case is fully polished?

Has this ever happened to me? No, because I’m extremely OCD, however I was curious and called RSC, I also used to own the 16622 and was trained to wear long sleeves only, only wear it sparingly, cover my wrist when walking through doorways, never let it touch denim (yes, denim will scratch it apparently), and for all I know never sneeze near it or even look at it too long because for all I know that could probably scratch it too. To top it all off, of COURSE the bracelet and clasp has Polished Center Links! While I am exaggerating the fragility of the Rolex Yacht-Master, the stress of potentially scuffing it is real.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 126622 is arguably one of my favorite watches ever made. I never thought I’d ever get to own one. It’s beautiful, ridiculously comfortable, relatively uncommon, however so stressful to wear. I have owned it for almost exactly one year and I personally try to enjoy every second I wear it; I even strap changed it with zero scuffs! I have and I do but my OCD and extreme caution lends itself to be a difficult one to fully appreciate without worry. I’ve debated if this watch was right for me all the time. However, I would recommend this watch to anyone minutely interested. I have no regrets having owned two of them like an insane person, but who in the watch collecting world isn’t insane?

Rolex Yacht-Master 40 Watch Hands-On

With the introduction of a chocolate dial and Everose Rolesor case on an Oyster bracelet, the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 adds another option to the line after last year’s model. A year ago at Baselworld 2015, the Rolex Yacht-Master arrived with a brand new Oysterflex strap, 40mm case, and caliber 3135 movement. It also came in an 18kt Everose (Rolex’s pink gold alloy) case and is now joined by this steel and gold Rolex Yacht-Master 40 model. There will also be a new all-steel model which we should have a look at for you in the coming days.

Many people, including myself, honestly, aren’t experts on the Rolex Yacht-Master line, so I wanted to explain that this watch is simply a new color scheme in the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 line , and not a new piece altogether. There are several two-tone Rolex Yacht-Master 40 watches, but since this is the first new one since last year’s model, I think it’s more interesting to talk about this watch and what it means for the line moving forward. So yes, there are other Rolex Yacht-Master 40 watches already out there, but for all their merits they’re not providing the novelty of a new chocolate dial.

Offering a distinctly softer look than the matte-black dial and bezel of its older sibling, there is a case to be made that this Rolex Yacht-Master 40 watch might have some success as a full-sized Rolex diver that appeals to women as well as men.  The Oyster bracelet in place of the sporty rubber (what Rolex would insist you call “Elastomer”) strap would likely help make that sell, also. That being said, this is certainly a unisex watch, even though I much prefer the black to the Everose look.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 40’s bidirectional rotating bezel has polished raised numerals and graduations that stand out against the matt, sand-blasted surface of the 18kt Everose gold bezel. This softens the look of the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 watch by having two warm tones of Everose gold. On the black dial version with a matt, sand-blasted black ceramic bezel, the polished, raised numerals and graduations maintain a brooding look. Here, it’s softer, brighter, and way less masculine.

Ditto with the dial, where the chocolate color gets that great sun-ray finish. Instead of a matt-black dial with a relationship to light like that of a Transylvanian count, the new model of the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 welcomes it. The hands and hour markers are unchanged, with 18kt Everose gold and luminescent Chromalight appliqués. Oh, and the cyclops over the date window remains. The Rolex Yacht-Master 40’s Everose Rolesor (that’s 904L steel and 18k Everose gold) Oyster bracelet with Oysterlock folding safety clasp looks great and is timeless. The Oysterflex is certainly not for everyone, especially when you consider the fact that you are kind of stuck with whichever one of six size options you choose.

If you haven’t heard about it yet, Rolex is has replaced COSC certifications for their movements with a new in-house Rolex Superlative Chronometer certification ( which you can read about here ) that ensures accuracy within -2/+2 seconds per day. The new Rolex Yacht-Master 40 has the same caliber 3135 movement as last year’s model, and it has the new “Green Seal” approving it as Rolex Superlative Chronometer-certified.

While I loved the red font indicating the watch’s name on the black-dial version, I’m not sure it works as well here. It looks a little out of place, and I can only hope Rolex at least considers some other options. Then again, the first Rolex watch on a strap followed up by a standard Oyster bracelet model that also removed the bold red font from the dial would really look like Rolex having too much fun with their fans and enthusiasts.

Also announced at Baselworld this year is the 39.5mm gold-cased  Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Master Chronometer “Chocolate” watch , which Omega has interestingly decided to market as a ladies’ watch. Personally, I am not the world’s biggest fan of the chocolate dial, but I know several people, both men and women, who I can say would love to wear it any day. It will also be interesting to see how the upcoming steel model is priced, but maybe we’ll see a lot more Rolex Yacht-Master watches out in the wild when you cut almost half from the price of the gold-case black dial model. Rolex Yacht-Master 116621 Two-Tone Everose Gold/Steel and Brown Dial – Hands-On

The big novelty from Rolex at Baselworld 2016 was… you guessed it: the Daytona Ceramic Bezel 116500LN  – a very nice watch sure, but still just a simple cosmetic evolution of an existing model. However, there were of course some other watches to discover. One of these models in particular has always managed to stay a bit under the radar, the Yacht-Master, a watch that has never really found favor with Rolex purists. Last year, it was revamped by the Crown, with the introduction of an Everose / Ceramic version . While we were expecting it to be introduced in steel in 2016 , Rolex decided differently and instead unveiled the new Rolex Yacht-Master 116621 Two-Tone Everose Gold / Steel and Chocolate Dial.

What is the Rolex Yacht-Master? A bit of history

In 1992, at Baselworld, Rolex introduced a brand new model named the Yacht-Master. Now, if you know anything about Rolex, you know that the introduction of an entirely new model is not something that occurs very often. Rolex has a collection of iconic and purpose-built watches and, mostly, they improve and redesign these existing watches. In fact, a new model is so rare that, when this Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992, it was the first real novelty (and here I mean “entirely new watch”) since 1964, when the Daytona made its debut. It took Rolex 28 years to create a new model… or at least one with a new name, because, objectively, this Yacht-Master felt (and still feels) quite familiar.

This wasn’t the first time the name Yacht-Master was mentioned at Rolex however. In the late 1960s, the brand developed a nautical-inspired Daytona, with regatta counter, also named Yacht-Master – a chronograph that however remained at the prototype stage and was never commercialized. A sort of tribute to this rare bird can be seen in the current Yacht-Master II, also a nautical-inspired chronograph with regatta complication.

The first execution (1992) Rolex yacht-Master 16628 Yellow Gold

The modern-day version of the Yacht-Master made its first appearance with the ref. 16628, an 18k yellow gold version with white dial and black hour indexes. The design of this watch feels quite familiar, so it’s easy to speculate about the inspiration and the positioning of this Yacht-Master in the collection. Some stories ( and keep in mind that there’s nothing official here ) say that Rolex, during the 1980’s, experimented with tons of different options to revamp the iconic Submariner. Several attempts later, something close to the Yacht-Master appeared, however, Rolex felt that redesigning the Sub was probably not the right move. When you have an icon, you don’t want to kill it. However, the design proposed was pleasing to Rolex and they looked at options to commercialize it. It had to be slightly different from a Sub of course, so as not to cannibalize it. The decision was made therefore that this watch should be positioned as a sort of luxurious nautical watch, mixing attributes of a dive watch with the ability to be used at the yacht-club or on the deck of a super-yacht.

The distinction was simple: steel case water-resistant to 300m, black bezel, black dial and tool-ish characteristics for the Submariner. Gold case water-resistant to 100m, bright dial, solid gold bezel and luxurious characteristics (mainly due to more rounded shapes) for the Yacht-Master. For the rest, both watches were rather close: the same 3135 movement, the same dial layout, the same hands, the same 60-minute bezel (but here, bidirectional). It’s possible this close resemblance to the Submariner might be the reason why the Yacht-Master was so unpopular in comparison. This is why, over the years, it has evolved with different materials and more colors (two-tone Rolesor, blue dial, ladies’ and mid-size versions… things that the Submariner does not have).

The most famous version of the Rolex Yacht-Master was introduced in 1999, under the reference 16622: steel case, steel bracelet, solid platinum bezel and platinum dial with sparkling finish. At Baselworld 2012, the brand came with a refreshed version, with maxi-dial and maxi-case, as well as a cobalt-blue dial option. Finally, a major evolution came in 2015, with the introduction of the Everose version , with black dial, black ceramic bezel insert and Oysterflex (rubber) bracelet – a new design that dramatically changed the perception of this watch.

What Rolex introduced this year is the Rolex Yacht-Master 116621 Everose Rolesor Chocolate dial. What does it mean, in ‘Rolex’ language? It means that we have a two-tone version ( Rolesor ) combining stainless steel and Everose Gold ( Rolex’s own rose gold alloy ) with a dark brown dial – a combination often used by the brand. It is not the first time that Rolex has used this Rolesor design on the Yacht-Master, as versions combining steel and yellow gold, with a white, grey, blue or gold dial, already exist. However, with this Rolex Yacht-Master 116621, it is the first time that Rolex offers a Rolesor Everose version of the model.

At Rolex, Rolesor means two-tone watches, described as such: “ Rolesor is the auspicious meeting of two metals on a single Rolex watch: gold and steel (…) The concept is simple: the bezel, the winding crown and the centre bracelet links are made of 18 ct yellow or Everose gold (Rolex’s exclusive pink gold alloy); the middle case and the outer links of the bracelet are made of 904L stainless steel. ” Thus, you would expect that this Rolex Yacht-Master 116621 follows those rules… Of course, it features a central case and a bracelet with satined outer links in steel. It also features Everose polished central links and bezel. However, the crown remains steel (which was the case already on the previous two-tone version ref. 16623). Look at all Rolesor watches by Rolex and you’ll see that the Yacht-Master, including this ref. 116621, is the exception. Nevertheless, I have to admit that, personally, I prefer the crown to be steel instead of gold, as I always felt this gold touch to be quite awkward.

The case is the usual Yacht-Master design, with a 40mm diameter and rather rounded lugs (while modern Submariners or GMT-Masters have bulky, squarish lugs) positioning this watch in the more luxurious category, strong crown protection guards – also rounded – and an abundance of polished surfaces (only the bracelet features satined surfaces). The bezel is the most striking design touch of this watch. It is now machined from a solid block of Everose gold but still with the same style as before: large, raised numerals, their polished surfaces contrasting nicely against the sand-blasted background. This has always been a distinctive point of this watch, compared to the Submariner – and the main aspect that made this watch more elegant and dressier than the Subs. Nevertheless, the bezel is bidirectional but, with its 60-minute scale, allows for recreational diving sessions.

With this Rolex Yacht-Master 116621, the brand opted for a safe combination, with a dark brown “chocolate” toned dial. This combination of Rose gold and brown dial has been widely used by the Crown. It gives the watch a warm aspect and a luxurious touch. The dial is finished with a sun-ray pattern, which affords gorgeous reflections in natural light conditions. The indexes, hands and Rolex logo are gold, allowing for great contrast and legibility. Traditional for this watch, the name of the model is printed in red, making it rather discreet. The date is displayed at 3 and, as always with the Crown, placed under a cyclops.

On the wrist, the Yacht-Master is very comfortable (thanks to the rounded lugs and crown guard) and offers a great combination of sports and luxury, which makes it a quite interesting weekend watch. Perfect for those who are not actively using their timepieces (for that, go for a Submariner) but who still want to be safe in case of an impromptu jump in the harbor. In fact, in this chocolate / Everose Rolesor combination, the watch gains a certain elegance and refinement, clearly setting it apart from the Submariner – and thus, making highly desirable. It perfectly deserves its name as a nautical-inspired watch that was not designed to be a tool watch.

As part of the new collection, this Rolex Yacht-Master 116621 also benefits from the latest technological features of the brand, including of course the blue Parachrom spiral as well as the new Superlative Chronometer certification (guaranteeing that the watch runs in the -2/+2 s/day range) and the 5-year warranty.

Lovely watches. Amazing price differences. The 116655 in 40mm is over £18,000 (uk) yet the 116621 in 40mm is a much lower £10,300 (uk).

The Yacht-Master has been a consistent part of the Oyster Perpetual collection since its debut in 1992 . We have seen several iterations of this sporty watch in various sizes, such as 40mm, 37mm, and 35mm, along with the Yacht-Master II, but this is the first time we have seen the Yacht-Master 40 set with Rolex’s famous gemstones. And boy is this one set with gemstones.

The latest Yacht-Master 40 is pretty much the same watch we know from 2015 , with the addition of a bright gem-set bezel. The watch still features a 40mm 18k Everose gold case (in case you forgot, Everose is Rolex’s special rose gold alloy) and has the rich glossy black dial with oversized white lume plots (Chromalight to be exact) and Everose surrounds. The movement is still the same trusty automatic caliber 3135 movement and the watch can still boast 100 meters (330 feet) of water resistance. 

The new thing about this watch is the rainbow-colored rotating bezel. I have talked about Rolex’s impeccable gem-setting technique before, and while it is clearly not for everyone, it deserves your respect. Here the bezel is set with 32 sapphires, eight tsavorites, and one diamond, fitted perfectly together, creating a vibrant look on an otherwise sporty timepiece. 

The new Rolex Yacht-Master has the Oysterflex strap featured on the previous iteration.

Finally, this watch is finished with a black Oysterflex rubber strap (which was developed and patented by Rolex) and 18k Everose Oysterlock clasp. There's no news yet on pricing for this watch, but we will update this story as soon as it becomes available. Be sure to check back soon for live photographs too.

HANDS-ON: Shades of grey – the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 with dark rhodium dial (ref. 116622)

This cool, calm and collected new Yacht-Master almost slipped past me. I was too busy falling in love (again) with the gold and chocolate Rolesor Yacht-Master, which was distracting me and dazzling my senses, but then out of the corner of my eye I spotted a flash of almost-iridescent blue, and my curiosity was piqued.

I’m so glad it was, because this steel and platinum Yacht-Master with its dark rhodium dial and blue highlights is an absolute stunner, even though it’s a much more restrained affair than its Everose-embellished siblings (in both Rolesor and Oysterflex variants). This is partly down to the dark dial, but it’s also the bi-directional platinum bezel, which might sound weird given the material, but with a predominantly sand-blasted finish, it’s actually far less in-your-face than ceramic. Not that it’s plain, by any stretch. The shimmering dial, polished bezel elements and centre bracelet links mean it pops where it counts, and the overall effect of metallic grey on metallic grey adds up to a truly luxurious watch on the wrist.

Then there’s the blue. It’s funny how that single line of text and sweeping second hand – a comparatively small amount of real estate – can have such massive impact on the general feel of the watch. This bright slash of colour adds energy to the Yacht-Master, once again proving Rolex’s mastery of the minuscule.

Aside from that, it’s business as usual. You have the 40mm case, rated to 100m, robust 3135 calibre, with 49 hours of power reserve, and parachrom hairspring, all backed by the Superlative Chronometre standard which guarantees -2/+2 seconds of accuracy per day, after casing.

Rolex has spoiled us for choice this year, with the attention-grabbing Daytona, the youthful Air-King and numerous two-tone options. But if you prefer your Rolex to be more stealth than statement, you can’t go wrong with this excellent new steel and platinum Yacht-Master 40.

Future Classics: The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 ref. 116655

Rolex’s Yacht-Master series emerged in the early nineties, touted as a nautically-themed luxury lifestyle offering, against the all-out professional tools of the brand’s dive trio.

Although quite clearly cut from the same mold as the Submariner (and there were even rumors it was originally dreamt up back in the eighties as a possible replacement for the legendary Sub), it has always set itself apart with its softer, more graceful lines and choice of materials. The closest you’ll find to the utility of steel here is when it’s being gentrified by the presence of Rolex’s own 18K gold in their Rolesor models or their platinum in the Rolesium versions, a combination that actually made its debut with the first wave of Rolex Yacht-Master watches.

Precious metals don’t come cheap and the YM has consequently not had the same universal mass appeal as some others in the Oyster Professional range, and it has always purposely avoided going too sporty, aiming itself instead at an altogether more elite audience. Those who, for example, may own luxury yachts.

Then, in 2015, a new model with a whole host of surprises up its sleeve made its grand entrance. The Yacht-Master reference 116655 brought with it a number of firsts, not just for the Yacht-Master range, but for Rolex itself.

Taking the series as a whole in a completely new direction, this latest addition seemed to be looking to bridge the gap between opulence and activity, sitting comfortably in the mix amid the dressiness of the Datejust on one side and the functionality of the Submariner on the other.

As a result, it arrived with a look unlike anything else in the lineup and quickly developed into one of the most talked about watches of the year. Replacing the conspicuous gleam of gold and platinum bezels for the low-key, let’s just say it, sexiness of matte black Cerachrom, together with Rolex’s first ever rubber strap (yes, you read that right) it became the brand’s poster child for stealth wealth.

Let’s take a look at one of Rolex’s most interesting and beautifully balanced masterpieces.

The Yacht-Master 40 ref. 116655

Set it down next to any of the other models in the Yacht-Master family and you’d be forgiven for thinking you were looking at an entirely different range of watches altogether.

While their bezels have always featured embossed numerals, as opposed to the engraved ones favored by the rest of the brand’s catalog, the contrast between the high polish of the three-dimensional markings against that gloriously muted, sandblasted ceramic gives an altogether more dramatic effect. It’s a look that has been echoed across onto the face, the first Yacht-Master to feature a black dial, again replacing what is typically a glossy element on other similarly colored Rolex watches.

Juxtaposing against the luscious glow of the elegantly curved 18k Everose case, Rolex’s own blend of gold and copper with a dash of platinum to seal it all in, it underlines the ref. 116655’s status as the best of both worlds. Dressy enough for the yacht club; sporty enough for the yacht race.

The Oysterflex

It’s not often that a watch’s bracelet becomes its most discussed element. Then again, it’s not often that Rolex makes a rubber strap. In fact, it’s never happened before. So, not only are you looking at the first one ever from the company, you could well be looking at the single most over-engineered watch band yet created.  

As you would expect from the Swiss colossus, calling their Oysterflex bracelet a rubber strap is a bit like calling a Rolls Royce a car. Yes, technically, but there’s a little more to it than that.

At its core is a blade forged from an alloy of titanium and nickel, around which is molded a high performance, hypoallergenic elastomer. It means, not only is the bracelet exceptionally resistant to environmental rigors, it’s free to form itself to the shape of the wearer’s wrist, while retaining all the strength of any of the brand’s metal bands.

It is an extremely comfortable wear, made even more so by the addition of a pair of ‘fins’ underneath that both cushion and support the watch while also providing a vent to allow air in, cooling the wrist on warm days. All secured by the same Oysterlock clasp as you’ll find in the majority of Rolex’s sports models, it comes with the 5mm Easylink extension system for a spot of fine-tuning.

The only drawback compared to, say, the traditional Oyster bracelet is obviously in making larger adjustments. There are no links to add or remove and, unlike other rubber straps, cutting it to size isn’t an option thanks to the metal core. Rolex offer a choice of bracelet size at the time of purchase, but it does mean you won’t be able to lend your watch to anyone with significantly bigger or smaller wrists than you. Oh well!

The Movement

When it was released in 1992, the Yacht-Master became the first in the Oyster Professional range to be offered in a 35mm mid-size, alongside the ladies and full-size men’s models.

Today, only a 40mm and 37mm version are available and, interestingly, they have two different movements. The smaller of the pair, marketed as both a men’s and women’s watch, is powered by the new generation Cal. 2236, containing the Syloxi hairspring that represents Rolex’s first venture into silicon components.

Inside the 40mm ref. 116655 is the battle-hardened and utterly reliable Cal. 3135. By far their most widely-used caliber, it has been proving its worth as Rolex’s main engine since 1988. Performing way beyond the standards set down by the COSC, it’s accurate to within +2/-2 seconds a day.

Future Classic?

A radical departure from the norm and the debut for a number of never-before-seen features, the Yacht-Master ref. 116655 has all the hallmarks of a classic in the making.

Its matte dial with the red text give it a healthy vintage feel too, and its hefty buy-in price will grant it an invaluable degree of exclusivity.

If I was a gambler, I certainly wouldn’t bet against it becoming a highly sought-after piece in years to come, but that isn’t the best reason to add one to the collection if the budget allows.

This is simply one of the most strikingly good-looking and capable watches ever produced by a brand that sets the standard other manufacturers try to live up to. A model welcomed anywhere, whether on deck or on the beach, the Everose gold Yacht-Master 40 is Rolex at their formidable best.

Update: October 2019 – Rolex Yacht-Master 42

At Baselworld 2019, Rolex unveiled an all-new addition to their Yacht-Master collection: the reference 226659. Featuring a 42mm case in solid 18k white gold, the new ref. 226659 is the largest Yacht-Master ever produced (not including Yacht-Master II watches), and is currently the only standard Yacht-Master available with a case size larger than 40mm.

Like the Everose gold Yacht-Master 40, the new Rolex Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 is exclusively offered on a black Oysterflex bracelet, and fitted with a matching black dial and black Cerachrom ceramic bezel insert. Additionally, while the Everose gold Yacht-Master 40 watches feature the ‘Rolex’ name in rose gold text and the ‘Yacht-Master’ name in red letters, the dial of the new Yacht-Master 42 has all-white text, and swaps out the Everose gold hands and hour markers for white gold versions, giving the new ref. 226659 an elegant and monochromatic color profile.

Moscow: An Honest Review of this Amazing City

“ You’re going to Russia?!?! Why? ” I heard these words pretty much every time I announced my upcoming trip to the east.

This reaction is understandable. Most people in Europe and the United States have a Putin-provoked distaste of the Russian Federation, which is growing by the day. Politicians claim that Russia’s sole mission is to diminish and undermine western powers to strengthen its own. After all, the name Vladimir comes from two old Slavic words, which together mean “great ruler of the world.” Make of that what you will…

Even the non-political vision of Russia is unfavorable. Most think of a cold, grey, backward place with Soviet architecture or battle-hardened, weather-beaten people. However, arriving at the sleek Moscow Domodedovo airport, I was impressed. I had been right to rebut popular notions of an unwelcoming and stony place.

However, almost immediately after leaving the airport, the ground for my righteous vindication became shaky. Driving into the outskirts of Moscow, my mind drew comparisons to television images of North Korean suburbs. Miles of uniform houses and bleak tower blocks lined the roads.

At the Izmailovov Delta Hotel next to the famous market of the same name, things were not looking much better. Truly peculiar decorations and violently colored walls competed for one’s gaze in the hotel lobby. Luckily, the rooms themselves were perfectly comfortable, though not particularly noteworthy. I’d stay central next time.

After dropping bags, I ventured toward the Izmailovov market for a look at how the locals live. From a distance, the buildings that encase the market are vivid, intricate and quite something to behold. As it was late in the day, the market was empty. Shop shutters were closed and stalls were folded up. I got the same uneasy feeling I get when walking through Disney Land – as if this was what remained after the recent collapse of a utopian society.

While nearly all the vendors had packed up and gone home, a few stalls remained opened for business. All that was left was an abundance of satirical matryoshka dolls containing various countries’ political leaders in historical order.

A tattooed burly salesman came over to me as I withdrew François Mitterrand from the wooden bowels of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing.

“ Where are you from, friend? ” He asked.

Ignoring my response, he launched into a speech about his armed forces days and the political situation in Russia.

“ You really ought not to trust the government, ok? Putin is a dangerous man, you see. Someone’s always watching in this city. ”

The whiff of Glühwein that carried with each sentence made me doubt the erudition of his analysis. Then again… this is what we hear in the news. I was not sure what to believe. After thanking the man and hastily filling Charles de Gaulle with the rest of the presidents of the Fifth Republic, I made my way back to the hotel.

Emerging from the underground we rounded the corner and immediately found ourselves in Red Square. The sight demands you stop and stare.

The insurmountable walls of the Kremlin line the length of one side; halfway along lies Lenin’s tomb and opposite is the lavish exterior of the Gosudarstvennyi Universalnyi Magazin shopping center (or GUM, as it’s referred to, thank God). The architectural marvel of Saint Basil’s Cathedral stands at the south end, with the State History Museum at the other. Even though the foreboding structures radiate a rouge pastel hue into every corner of the square, there is a sense of openness. No-doubt there was a somewhat different atmosphere when thousands of Soviet soldiers goose-stepped through the square. Interestingly, the Russian army still marches like this today.

Walking around central Moscow, history oozes from every spire and pillar. Buildings seem to lean over as you walk past, as if peering down on whoever dares to enter these austere places. For every moment or event in Russian history, there is a dedicated museum.

The quality of each museum is notably high. In particular, the Armory inside the Kremlin holds astonishing collections of royal carriages from across the world and throughout the ages. The world-renowned Fabergé Eggs are displayed here too.

Having wandered around for so long during the day, we had no time to eat before attending the Ballet that evening. Sitting in the Bolshoi, the long day began to catch up with me.

It is now that I must make a confession: while attending a performance by one of the world’s greatest ballet companies, I fell asleep.

Thankfully, I woke up later in the second half and was treated to the final leaps and prances of Shostakovich’s The Bright Stream. As someone who is not a ballet aficionado, that was probably enough.

Feeling significantly perkier afterward, a late dinner was in order. Just behind the Bolshoi is VOGUE Café , a gastronomic outpost of the famous magazine. It claimed to serve an eclectic mix of Japanese, Italian and Russian dishes. Intrigued, we entered.

Adventurously, we accepted the offer of some Russian wine. Full bodied and berried, it was delicious. Our evident surprise led the waitress to explain that Russian food and drink has improved hugely over the last few years. As it turns out, since the United States and the European Union placed sanctions on Russia after their annexation of Crimea, food imports have been scarce. As a result, Russian producers have been forced to meet the demand and quality expected today. As a result, Siberian wines and cheeses now win awards around the globe.

When we left the restaurant, it was late. Only a day had passed, yet we had filled every minute with history, culture and food. The next three days followed a similar format and we continued to make our way down the list of museums and sights. A boat ride along the river is a must-do for alternative views of the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Afterwards, sit on the rooftop Strelka bar opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and watch the 3-mile-long line of pilgrims move slowly forward.

On the third day, we were due to board an overnight train to Saint Petersburg, but there was still so much left to do. Truth be told, it was probably too much for another three days, let alone one.

Nonetheless, I was satisfied. Moscow had revealed itself to be a fascinating and impressive city. While the city infrastructure isn’t as up-to-date as most capitals, the needs of every modern traveler can be met. It certainly isn’t the cold and unfriendly place envisioned by most in the west. Moscow’s winning attribute is its omnipresent sense of untouched history. This is a feature that is so often lost amongst hordes of tourists in Europe’s capitals.

It goes to show: what we hear about places we haven’t been in the news or through general hearsay, we can formulate pretty strong prejudices in our mind. While the political realities may still be ugly, by visiting, you can learn to separate and appreciate the everyday, the culture and the history of a place. On one side of a great red wall in central Moscow, a tyrannical leader works. On the other side, wholly separated, lies a magnificent Red Square where an overwhelming sense of history reveals the essence of Moscow and of Russia. And it is truly remarkable.

Bidirectional Rotatable Bezel

Timing the distance.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background.

This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

The Oysterflex Bracelet

Highly resistant and durable.

The Yacht-Master’s new Oysterflex bracelet, developed by Rolex and patented, offers a sporty alternative to metal bracelets. The bracelet attaches to the watch case and the Oysterlock safety clasp by a flexible titanium and nickel alloy metal blade.

The blade is overmoulded with high-performance black elastomer which is particularly resistant to environmental effects, very durable and perfectly inert for the wearer of the watch. For enhanced comfort, the inside of the Oysterflex bracelet is equipped with a patented longitudinal cushion system that stabilizes the watch on the wrist and fitted with an 18 kt Everose gold Oysterlock safety clasp. It also features the Rolex Glidelock extension system, designed by the brand and patented. This inventive toothed mechanism, integrated beneath the clasp, allows fine adjustment of the bracelet length by some 15 mm in increments of approximately 2.5 mm, without the use of tools.
