Crete Luxury Yacht Charter Vacations
A Crete yacht charter gives you unrivalled coastal access to Greece’s largest island and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean. It lies south of the Aegean Sea and was historically and important link between Africa and Asia. At over 62 miles long, Crete’s coastline consists of both sandy beaches and rocky shores. Most luxury charter yachts and private superyachts visit during July and August when the weather is at its best. Favourite luxury yacht anchorages include Ayia Roumeli, Loutro, Vai and Spinaloga. There’s also a good selection of ports like Ayios Nikolaos, Iraklio and Rethimno.
Crete is well known for its beautiful beaches like Balos Beach, Preveli Beach and Falassama Beach, most of which are in the south of the island. Water sports such as jet skiing and wind surfing are very popular here. Why not arrange an island tour to see the White Mountains, Mount Ida, caves and amazing landscapes?
For yacht charterers who are interested in Greek history, Crete is certainly the place to head for. One of the most popular attractions is the Palace of Knossos, just south of Iraklio. This is a well-preserved palace containing workshops, storerooms, the throne room, banqueting halls and the royal quarters. It dates back to 2000-1350 BC and is a must-visit.
Those holidaymakers who enjoy trekking and walking won’t be disappointed when rambling through Crete’s mountains and hills. Take a walk out of Maleme to the quaint hilltop village of Deres. Here there’s a friendly taverna and a whitewashed church. The Samaria National Park which is accessible by bus has one of the biggest gorges in all of Europe.
If you have children with you on your yacht charter vacation, the Acqua Plus Water Park won’t disappoint them. Less than 20 miles from Heraklion it is split into two sections, one for children and one for adults. The delightful gardens around the water park have many exotic plants and flowers to see with a water slide waiting to be discovered underneath a lovely weeping willow tree. With slides, games and a lazy river, spend the day at this exciting park before returning to your superyacht for a good night’s rest.
Next day why not visit the Venetian Harbour which is full of charm and grandeur? Your yacht charter captain can arrange anchorage nearby. Alternatively, there’s the CretAquarium that holds over 2,000 different species of marine life. There’s nothing better than a hearty Greek meal so look out for foodie hotspots that are rustic and have amazing menus. Don’t forget to order a bottle of the local wine. All in all Crete is a wonderful destination for a yacht charter holiday.

Tourists reviews
The day was windy which brought very strong seas. The Captain and crew did their best to keep us safe and comfortable; doing their best to provide us the experience that was promised. The trip did not disappoint. Even though the seas were rough, we made it to Dia Island parked in a beautiful bay. We swam for an hour in beautiful blue water. Yummy eats were provided. Along with champagne and drinks! We understand nature cannot be controlled, but the crew still provided a wonderful trip. *On a side note, the crew was very considerate and knowledgeable in ensuring the safety and welfare of their passengers. Due to the choppy waters, passengers were a bit sea sick and the crew were able to get them through it. Can't say enough, how impressed I was with their service!

Our group of 6 took the catamaran day trip from Hersonissos to Dia Island last Saturday. It was a perfect way to escape the heat. We had been concerned that the catamaran would be cramped with 20 people but this wasn’t an issue at all. The staff were friendly and efficient and the whole day ran smoothly. We anchored in a perfect cove for a few hours. The water was turquoise and so clear. Plenty of time to swim, snorkel, paddle board etc. Lunch and drinks are included. My only suggestion would be to put bottles of water on the table for guests to help themselves rather than asking the staff all the time.

The organization, food and staff were excellent. The view was amazing. Perhaps a little more interaction with the staff would have been appreciated, I think that might come with age as most were fairly young and distracted by the cute girls who seemed to be part of the crew.

Had a great time on this excursion! We met at the cafe and got checked in then headed to the catamaran and had coffee and pastries and began our sail. On the way out we learned some interesting facts and drank white wine and had snacks. Once we arrived to the spot to snorkel, the water was so clear and beautiful. After swimming, we ate an amazing lunch that was prepared on the catamaran and then sailed back. Overall, the staff was great and we had a fun time with the other guests.

Thank you very much DanEri for the wonderful excursion on Catamaran around Spinalonga! It was INCREDIBLE! Keep going to make all people happy with your amazing service, delicious food&drinks, with your professionalism and beautiful Catamaran! I highly recommend to everyone this company for the boat trip.

The reason we travel is an experience like this. Sleek, comfortable and well-equipped catamaran, first rate crew who really care about your enjoyment, nice dinner (especially the mussels) and lovely Mirabella Bay coastline. Had quite a bit of difficulty finding the boat, but all was forgiven after the ocean swim and camaraderie among people from such a variety of countries.

What a brilliant day!! George the Skipper and Joanna, who prepared the wonderful food, made our day really special. We traveled on this lovely yacht to a tranquil bay where we had loads of time to swim and paddle board. We were then treated to a fantastic lunch with fresh fish and delicious salads and plenty of alcohol! What an unbelievable day, thank you both so much!

This was a 10/10 and would highly recommend booking with them. It was 11 of us in a group and holds 20 people so it felt like a private trip. The crew were lovely, very polite and attentive. They had all kinds of things like paddle boards, floaters, snorkelling. Jumping off the boat was so fun and we had enough time to have fun and do whatever we want to do. For the non swimmers who want to go into the ocean they give noodles which I have never seen and many non swimmers were very happy instead of wearing life jackets. The lunch was delicious! And the starters when getting onto the boat was so good! We also forgot our drone batteries and were stressing, when we called in the morning they had found it and left it aside for us to pick up. I booked Daneri Yachts for my husbands birthday . The Crew was great, welcoming, funny, and laid back , (I have had a bad experience in the past in France) however this was such a big difference and we actually really enjoyed our time . I loved that the trip left at 9:30 and we were back around 2:30 it gave us still so much time to use our day . What I love about this cruise was that your not just getting the sailing but they welcomed us with freshly cut cheeses, dips, and crackers . While they let us off the boat to swim they prepared a whole hot lunch . I was shocked when i saw them taking out fresh fish from the oven . They had two different salads and some other sides . But I was overall thankful the for the homecooked fresh meal . They also ended it with desserts and fresh cut fruit . it was just overall a pleasant experience . I highly recommend booking this .

Crete yacht charter: Full guide to renting a boat in Crete
Thinking about booking a Crete yacht charter to explore one of the most amazing Greek Islands this summer?
Read this guide and learn all you need to know before you rent a boat in Crete in 2022. With these sailing tips, you’ll enjoy your yacht vacation in Crete, sail to beautiful destinations and relax!
A bit about Crete’s history
The Minoans governed the eastern Mediterranean from 2800 to 1150 BC, and Crete was home to one of the world’s most prominent civilizations. The art that has survived on this Greek island reflects a polished and peaceful civilization. The Museum in Iraklion has a good collection showcasing Crete’s heritage.
The Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Syrians established a flourishing civilization via commerce, seafaring, and trading with other peoples. The Achaians and Dorians soon followed. The Romans conquered Crete from 69 until 330 AD, and Gortyn was their main town. Crete was captured by the Arabs in 824 and was not liberated until 961.
The island was thereafter given to the Venetians in 1204. They secured the island with new castles and laid the foundations for the new towns of Hania and Rethimno. Within the walls, towns grew with narrow lanes and residences intermingled with ornate churches, fountains, piazzas, and palaces, the ruins of which may still be seen today.
The Turks arrived on the island for the first time in 1645, and by 1669, they had conquered the whole island of Crete.
The island was not joined with the rest of Greece until 1913.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht in Greece?
Renting a boat in Greece starts at $330 per day in the low season . However, the Greek yacht charter cost goes up to $13,800 per week for Crete in the high season. Large private yacht charters in the Greek Islands are often chartered with a skipper, and there are also lots of luxury crewed yacht charters (or all inclusive yacht charters) in Greece.
Greece sailing charters prices for boats without captain or crew prices are lower than most bareboat Mediterranean yacht charter prices. To lower the cost of boat hire in Greece even further, you can group up for flotilla sailing holidays Greece and then contact companies like Kavas Yachting, Sunsail Greece, Nautilus Yacht Charter, MG Yachts to get a personalized offer.
The most popular Crete yacht charter locations are Chania , Heraklion , and Foinikas. If you have the time (and money) for a long Aegean yachting vacation, you can definitely expand your internet search with bareboat yacht charter Cyclades , motor yacht charter Athens, yacht charter Skiathos , or yacht charter Athens Greece .
What are the sailing conditions for Crete?
The prevailing wind in the summer is the dreaded Meltemi from the NW or W-NW.
In July and August, the winds are at their fiercest, reaching Beaufort 5-6 on the northern shore, but they are usually around 3-4. Do keep in mind that many inexperienced sailors renting boats from the continent choose to pay an extra fee to Crete yacht charter companies to return their rented boats to the mainland because they are incapable to sail back up safely by themselves through the winds on the northern coast.
On the southern coast, the Meltemi blows at a force of 2 to 4, in spring and fall. Strong squalls that blow down from the mountains are well-known along the southern shore. There is a minimal warning, and they can be dangerous near inshore.
During the summer months, the average daily temperature on the Greek island reaches 35 ° Celsius, with temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius not unusual.
Northern Crete yacht charter destinations
Kissamos is located in the northwest corner of Crete. Yachts are welcome to dock alongside or anchor in the harbor. There’s a good cover from the west and northwest, but the area is exposed to the east and southeast. Getting away in a strong northerly might be tough since the yacht will have to struggle to exit the bay.
Water is easily accessible, and there’s also a Greek taverna nearby. If you want to buy provisions, Kastelli is 1 mile away by bus.
To the east of this Greek island, you’ll find Chania. In a strong northerly wind, the waves can heap up at the entrance, making it difficult to reach shelter with your yacht charter in the Aegean Sea. The marina is located in the eastern basin. You will be led to a berth where a mooring will be laid. Except for northerly gales, you’ll enjoy really good protection.
On the pontoons, you’ll find both water and power, and a tiny tanker can bring you fuel. All necessities can be bought here, and there are several nice Greek tavernas in town.
This Venetian city was the capital of Crete for centuries, and much of its exquisite architecture has survived. Don’t skip a visit to Chania, especially if the weather’s on your side for arrival and departure.
Souda is located even further to the east than Chania. It’s the Greek navy’s southern base, and pleasure yachts have sometimes been refused passage to the are. If you’re let in, go bow or stern to on the southern quay. The shelter is excellent.
Water is available on the ferry mole, and fuel can be bought, too. All provisions are easy to get, and there is also a decent selection of Greek tavernas.
The military presence tends to put a damper on proceedings, so this Crete yacht charter destination is not a must-see, in my humble opinion.
Georgioupoli
Georgioupoli is a tiny port near the mouth of the Almiros river. Anchor beside the quay or in the bay to the north. Except for gusts f wind coming from the north and northeast, you’ll find adequate shelter.
There’s water in the hamlet, as well as most necessities, plus several Greek tavernas.
The village is picturesque and pleasant, so a visit’s worthwhile during your Crete yacht charter vacation.
Rethymno is an ancient Venetian port. Head to the northern jetty or go bow or stern to the eastern jetty. You’ll enjoy ample coverage even from the Meltemi, which is nestled behind the eastern jetty when it blows.
Water is available on the quay, and fuel can be provided. All provisions are available, and there are numerous fine Greek tavernas in the Venetian harbor, including several seafood restaurants.
This stop should be one of the Crete yacht charter trip highlights. The Venetian harbor and town are lovely, and the houses with wooden balconies are a reminder of Turkish domination.
Heraklion or Iraklion
Iraklion is the island capital of Crete. Proceed to the Venetian harbor, located at the western end of the main harbor. Go bow or stern to the south or north quay in the marina.
The quay has water access, and fuel is available on request. The shopping is good, and there’s fresh fish available on the waterfront. There are also numerous good Greek tavernas that serve fresh seafood. Try those near the local market!
To avoid the crowds, go early in the morning or late in the day to visit Knossos, one of the ancient sites of this Greek island. Don’t skip the museum with its collection of Minoan artifacts!
Hersonissos
Hersonissos is another tiny port town. It’s considered a recent tourist development, filled with rude tourists and terrible architecture.
If you stop here, go bow to the mole or anchor away. Because the depths vary around the harbor and the holding is weak on sand and rock, caution is advised. However, as the harbor is only exposed to the SE, there is an adequate cover from the strong northern winds.
Water, fuel, and groceries are all available in town.
Spinalonga Lagoon (or Elounda Lagoon) is located to the north of Kolpos Mirampelou (or Mirabello Bay). Yachts are free to anchor anywhere in the lagoon.
The majority of supplies can be bought in the nearby town of Elounda.
Go visit the uninhabited Spinalonga Island, near the entrance in the bay. The Venetian fort and the abandoned town are really interesting to explore.
Agios Nikolaos
Agios Nikolaos is located in the southern part of the island (though not really on the southern coast). On the south side of the headland, there’s a marina. Yachts should use a laid mooring and go bow or stern to where advised.
The pontoons have both water and electricity, and you can supply your Crete charter boat with fuel. There are also various Greek tavernas and shops from where most necessities can be purchased.
Although the marina of Agios Nikolaos is some distance away from the busy area, this fishing hamlet is now a significant tourist development.
Pahia Ammos
Pahia Ammos is located on the southern end of Kolpos Mirampelou (or Mirabello Bay). Depths of up to 3 meters can be found at the mole’s end.
Unfortunately, the harbor is vulnerable to the Meltemi and the town has a limited supply of groceries, despite its many Greek tavernas.
Sitia is located even further east. Navigate to the inner northern mole and moor bow or stern-to the quay. The bottom is mostly sand and vegetation, with a few boulders thrown in for good measure. You’ll enjoy adequate protection from the Meltemi.
In the harbor, you’ll find both fuel and water. All necessities can be bought in town, and there are several excellent seafood restaurants.
The inner harbor is beautiful, with its tree-lined esplanade. Watching the sunset over the harbor while tucking into a great sea bass is the ideal way to conclude a day charter in Crete.
The northeastern extremity of Crete is Cape Sidero, with various anchorages in minor inlets. There are no amenities, yet the environment is impressive and barren.
Southern Crete yacht charter destinations
Gramvousa Island is located off the shore of Crete. On the southeastern side of this small island, there’s a protected bay. Yachts can either anchor in the bay or go bow to the quay.
There are no amenities but water can be obtained from a well near the chapel.
Palaiochora
Palaiochora is located at the southwest tip of Crete. Go side, bow, or stern to the eastern side of the rocky outcropping in the new harbor. Alternatively, depending on the wind direction, drop anchor in any of the two bays to the east and west of the headland.
Water and fuel are available in Palaiochora, as are all sorts of groceries. Plus, the Greek tavernas in this area are excellent!
Akra Mouros
Anchorages may be found on both sides of Akra Mouros. Ormos Loutra to the east, where a boat may anchor, and Ormos Foinikias to the west. There are a few tavernas in the village, and just a few supplies are available.
Hora Skafion
Heading east from Akra Mouros, you’ll reach Hora Skafion. In calm weather, yachts can anchor off the lovely settlement. There are Greek tavernas ashore, and all provisions are available for shopping.
This once-small town is now a thriving tourist destination.
Agia Galini
Yachts can go side, bow or stern to the dock at Agia Galini, another freshly built tourist destination. There’s decent holding in the sandy bottom, as well as good protection from the Meltemi.
Water is available on the quay, and fuel is available in town. All provisions are available, and there are several nice Greek tavernas.
Matala is a horseshoe-shaped bay on the western side of Ormos Mesaras. Stop here only if the weather is calm during your Southern Crete yacht charter vacation. And wait for the weather to change for the better if you have the time, because this is a great stop on your Greece yachting vacation.
Most provisions are available for shopping, and there are several decent Greek tavernas on shore.
Homer’s Odyssey mentions Matala. Menelaus’ ships were wrecked here on their way back from the Trojan wars. In Roman times, it was an important harbor.
By Paralia Matala, you will find the Matala Caves – Neolithic caves carved into sea cliffs.
Kaloi Limenes
Kaloi Limenes is a tiny harbor on the other side of Agiofaraggo Martsalo Kefali. Boats may anchor in the bay at a depth of three to six meters. There is considerable protection from the north and west, although the area’s exposed to the east and south.
There are a few Greek tavernas and limited options to shop for groceries in the village.
Ierapetra is a medium-sized port. The town and harbor date back to Minoan times, but unfortunately, little of the antique architecture has survived.
Crete charters can go bow or stern to the north or west quays.
Water is available on the quay, as is gasoline from the town. All provisions are available for shopping, and there are several waterfront tavernas.
Kato Zakro or Zakros
Crete yacht charters can anchor in Kato Zakro’s vast sandy bay. There are a few tavernas on the beach, but the primary draw is the remnants of a Minoan palace at the bottom of the stunning valley.
Ormos Grandes
Ormos Grandes is a big bay on Akra Plaka’s north shore.
Crete yacht charters can take refuge from the Meltemi at Kouremenos, located to the north of the bay.
Vai is located 2 kilometers north of Kouremenos. Sailboats can moor by the sandy beach, and there are Greek tavernas on the beach.
Is food included in yacht charter Greece?
Food is not included. You can choose between eating on land at local Greek tavernas, shopping and cooking on your own, or hiring a cook to prepare the meals for you. Whatever you opt for, make sure you try to integrate the local cuisine into the menu.
Cretan cuisine
Cretan cuisine is comparable to that of the rest of the Aegean:
- Tuna, swordfish, sea bass, urchins, octopus, squid, and cuttlefish all play important roles.
- Beef, hog, lamb, and goat are all available. A specialty is rabbit stew.
- Cheese pie and fried cheese are also popular ( staka ).
- Try yogurt and honey tarts if you have a sweet tooth (kaltzounia).
- Cretan wine is reasonably priced.
Find out more about traditional Greek food and drinks .
Where can I sail to from Crete?
You can continue sailing to other Greek Islands from the Aegean Sea (or taking a ferry to another island, then renting a boat there). The most accessible is to go sailing the Cyclades Islands .

What Choose
Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Crete
At Yachting.Rent, we offer an extensive selection of yachts to make your seafaring journey around the beautiful island of Crete a dream come true. One question we often receive is whether to opt for a sailing boat or a catamaran. We believe the decision lies in the kind of experience you seek.
The Classic Sailing Boat Experience For the traditionalists, a sailing boat offers an authentic sailing adventure that connects you with the sea in a profound way. There’s a unique thrill in manipulating the sails and rudder to navigate the waters that motor-powered vessels simply cannot match. Sailing boats are perfect for smaller groups looking for a cozy, intimate setting. They are also often the choice of those looking to test their sailing skills and feel the harmony of working with the winds and the waves.
The Luxury of a Catamaran On the other hand, if your primary concern is comfort and stability, a catamaran would be an ideal choice. With its dual-hull design, a catamaran offers more space, stability, and smooth sailing, making it less likely to rock in choppy waters. The expansive decks of our catamarans provide ample space for sunbathing, dining, and unwinding, making them perfect for larger groups or families.
Why Choose? Experience Both! At Yachting.Rent, we don’t believe in restricting your choices. Depending on the length of your stay, you could opt to experience both vessels, dividing your time between the classic seafaring charm of a sailing boat and the spacious luxury of a catamaran.
Supported by a Dedicated Team Whether you choose a sailing boat or a catamaran, our team at Yachting.Rent is committed to providing you with an unforgettable journey. We offer the option of bareboat charter for experienced sailors, or you can choose to have a professional skipper guide your journey.
Uncover the treasures of Crete, from the sparkling azure waters to the rich, cultural history. Reach out to us at Yachting.Rent, and we’ll help you select the perfect vessel for your Cretan sailing adventure. Let’s set sail for an unforgettable experience!

What is the best time to visit Crete?
The most popular time to visit Crete is during the summer when the weather is hot and dry. The temperatures in July and August can reach up to 30 degrees Celsius and the sun shines for around 12 hours! However, this time of year is also the most crowded time to visit Crete. Therefore, a private yacht charter is a perfect way to distance yourself from the crowds and explore the hidden beaches around the coastline.
Should you charter a private yacht with or without a skipper?
You will find that many yachts on Scansail come with the option to include a skipper. While this adds to the overall price, it can bring many advantages to your boating holiday. For example, a professional skipper is ideal for people that do not have nautical experience, because they will take care of all the sailing, docking, and anchoring for you. Moreover, the skipper will be familiar with Crete and its waters, leaving you in comfortable and safe hands. Overall, a skipper has so much to offer when it comes to a private yacht charter in Crete, so don’t miss out on the opportunity!
What to do in Crete
Crete is not only one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Greece, but also the entire Mediterranean! There is so much to experience on this island that it can be hard to decide where to start. This is why we have some suggestions to inspire you on your boating holiday.
If you want to get to know the long history of this island, then the best way to learn is by visiting the town centres. You can visit the capital, Heraklion, or other large cities such as Chania and Rethymno. While you walk around the cobblestone streets, you can see remains of the numerous civilisations that stood before such as the Minoans, Venetians, and Ottomans. Some particularly unique examples of architecture are the arched paved streets and high buildings from the Venetians or the Mosque of the Janissaries in Chania from the Ottomans. You can also visit the stunning Palace of Knossos to get to know more about Crete’s myths, where it was said to be home to the Minotaur during the Bronze Age.
Apart from the culture, this island has an endless amount of beautiful beaches with turquoise waters. One of the most famous examples is the Balos Lagoon in Kissamos. This beach has silky white sands and clear waters that attract tourists from all over. You can find it between Cape Gramvousaa and Cape Tigani, however, it is best accessed by yacht. Other popular beaches are Myrtos and Loutro Beach which have vibrant reefs with shipwrecks and caves that are great to discover by kayak. If you are a fan of snorkelling or scuba diving, you’ll love to know that Crete is also home to some exotic flora and fauna! If you pass through the shallow end of the waters, you can find sea turtles, monk seals, and if you’re really lucky, even dolphins!
Explore nearby destinations on your private yacht charter
If you have the chance to charter your yacht for longer periods, you can use this time to discover nearby destinations! If you don’t want to travel too far, you can stay in Greece and head towards the nearby archipelago with the Dodecanese Islands. This includes other beautiful and lush islands that are perfect for family holidays such as Rhodes, Tilos, and Karpathos. However, you can also expand your sailing route to include the Cyclades, the Sporades, or the Ionian Islands. The possibilities are endless when it comes to the Greek islands! There is so much rich history and wonderful scenery in the country that you can never be bored. Alternatively, if you would prefer to venture off into other countries, you can see other nearby destinations such as Italy, Malta, or Albania.

Yacht Charter Crete
General information.
CRETE is the largest and, some say, the most beautiful of the Greek islands the southern-most outpost of Europe. Few sailors, or yacht charters, venture further south. High mountains, spliced by spectacular gorges; strange plateaus, sheer coastlines, caves, and white sand beaches characterise this popular destination.
It was the birthplace of the Ancient Minoan civilisation, one of the earliest civilisations in Europe, and later subject to various occupations and wars over the centuries. Crete offers an abundance of both natural and cultural attractions for its many visitors.
Crete’s northern coast has been well-developed for the package tourist and is crowded in the summer months. Day sailing along this coast between harbours is the best option. Boat charters will find harbours and organized marinas, but few natural anchorages. The southern coast, once a backpacker’s haven, is being developed rapidly and many of its best beaches are accessible only by boat. The Western coast remains wild and rugged.
More information about Crete you can find - here ...
Sailing conditions
Sailing around Crete is recommended for experienced sailors and crew. Less experienced sailors should stick to the central north coast. The best sailing season is May/June and September/October when the weather is calm.
July and August does not provide the best conditions for boats as the ‘meltemi’ winds blow most days and are north-easterly on the western end and north-westerly on the eastern end. Force 5-6 is standard, though it can get up to Force 7 or 8. The effect of this wind on the straits at each end of Crete can result in big seas, with 3-4m waves at this time of year; the wind strength is often 1 to 2 Beaufort higher than the forecast.
The southern coast is notoriously dangerous during summer winds, since the high mountains give rise to strong katabatic squalls.

What to eat during your yacht charter in Crete?
Cretan cuisine is very famous, and many scientific studies have shown all the benefits of this cuisine. People with cardiovascular problems are less numerous in Crete, where life expectancy is the highest in Europe. But what is the secret of the Cretan diet? A very healthy diet with fruit and vegetable products, cereals, fish and little meat, and very good quality local olive oil are the secrets to staying in shape.
As a starter, you can take either a Greek salad, a mixture of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions, and feta. Or an excellent yogurt cucumber salad with garlic, mint, and olive oil. The main dishes are mainly made with eggplants, tomatoes, and zucchinis. Lamb, pork, or sheep are also consumed and flavored with herbs. Fish is also very popular with Cretans, which can be grilled or cooked in soup. For dessert, Cretans are more interested in fruit. But you will find delicious oriental pastries such as baklava or kadaifis. Make sure to have a glass of Raki, an aniseed alcoholic beverage, at the end of a meal.
Must-visit places when you are chartering a yacht in Crete
Chania, Hania, Chania, the same city in the North / West of the Crete island, has three names. Many civilizations have existed here (Minoans, Venetians, and Ottomans), which make Hania a beautiful and multicultural city. This city is the perfect place just to wander around, have a drink, and visit a museum.
Agios Nikolaos
The town of Agios Nikolaos, in Mirabello Bay, is a charming little town with a lot of tourists. It has one of the most charming ports in the country. Established on several hills, the city surrounds a tiny lake. Around it, there are a host of restaurants and bars. You can't really expect to have calm and tranquility here, Agios Nikolaos is undoubtedly touristic.
Elafonissi is a peninsula south of Crete. A lagoon of clear water borders the beach. It is very beautiful and therefore very touristy, the best thing to do is to come during the low season. Elafonissi is reachable by foot or by swimming through a sandy tongue.
Frangokastello
Frangokastello is about 10 km east of Chora Sfakion, situated on the coast. The village consists of a few scattered houses, but it has a fort built by the Venetians in the 14th century. Located by the sea, the fortress has never been occupied and gives the impression of being a theatre setting. Frangokastello has a pretty, shallow, and protected lagoon, bordered by a sandy beach.
The Samaria gorges
The Samaria gorges are exceptional. The canyon is about 16 km long, and the cliffs can reach a height of 300 m. The narrowest point of the Samaria Gorge, known as the "Iron Gates," is only 2.5 m wide. The cliffs overlook the small stream, and you can see Kri-Kri, the goats of the country. It's really a beautiful walk if you arrive early in the morning to avoid the tourist buses.
Spinalonga Island
The island of Spinalonga, also known as the "island of lepers," is a small fortified islet in Crete. Facing Elounda, in Mirabello Bay, the fort was built by the Venetians, then occupied by the Turks, and eventually, the lepers were stationed there. It was they who renovated the fort from 1903 to 1957, during their stay in Europe's last leper colony. It is really touching to walk through the now-abandoned streets of Spinalonga.
Loutro is located between Agia Rouméli and Chora Skafron. It is a pretty fishing village with a superb beach and transparent waters. Loutro has managed to preserve his authenticity for the time being. Some of the village's merchants would like to build a road (yes, there are none in Loutro!) to open it up... It is still a real pleasure to enjoy a raki in the shade of a terrace while looking at the turquoise water.
Matala is located 70 km from Heraklion and 4 km from Pitsidia. The small fishing village is known for its caves and hand-dug cavities. At the time of the "Flower Power," many hippies stopped there on the famous Kathmandu road. Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens were there. Too bad, today the place has become very touristic: shops, pensions, restaurants... Make sure to visit the magical Red Beach during your sailing holiday in Crete.
