“After a long experience in building yachts from 500 to over 2,000 GT, it is time to carry this kind of technical vision also into yachts from 30 to 45 meters,” Rossinavi COO Federico Rossi said in a statement. “Vessels suitable for long voyages and spending long periods offshore, while maintaining the same philosophy of luxury and functionality of a superyacht category.”

The Nolimits Fleet

The initial Nolimits lineup includes the 98-foot NL30, the 121-foot NL37 and NL37+, and the 148-foot NL45 and NL45+. The “plus” versions have a raised pilothouse that allows for a different layout on the upper deck: The 37+ has an indoor skylounge with panoramic views, while the 45+ has a VIP cabin with a private deck.

All fleet members feature wide hulls to increase stability and space. Each yacht is outfitted with generous guest and crew areas to ensure comfort even on lengthy, global voyages. In addition, the vessels sport expansive panoramic windows and spacious sundecks to connect guests with the sea. The sundecks will be fitted with pools, bars, BBQs, sunbeds, and even windbreakers for protection against the elements.

In terms of performance, the Nolimits cruisers will be equipped with heavy-duty engines and generators, a double stabilization system for smooth sailing, and two independent rudders to increase maneuverability. In addition, each yacht has an impressive fuel capacity that enables transatlantic crossings, noise technology that dramatically reduces sound, and an A/C system with chillers that can operate at 150 percent capacity for fast refreshment.

"People more and more are realizing the advantage of the multi-hull platform for cruising. It’s stable, it offers a lot of space, and it goes fast" - "The success of a boat, of a design, is really tied to the relationship you have with a customer. The best yachts that we have designed were also nice human relationships. That’s been true since the beginning. When you get on very well with people, you feel better about what they really like, how they will sail, how they will enjoy the boat, and that proximity leads to a boat naturally that you like." - Marc Van Peteghem (and Vincent Lauriot-Prévost) founded VPLP which is responsible for designing the world's most innovative racing boats and largest luxury catamarans.

David Gotze lately purchased the yacht christened Limit, which became in turn Aszhou and Voodoo. As Voodoo, Hugh Ellis finished the 2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart third overall to win Division 1, after buying the yacht out of USA. As No Limit, it led September’s Flinders Islet Race, but was pipped for line honours by Chinese Whisper –just 37 seconds separated them at the finish, with No Limit taking seventh overall. Then she led the Newcastle Bass Island Race, but retired with damage. Gotze campaigned the LC60, Triton, in recent Rolex Sydney Hobarts and finished 25th last year. Beforehand, he raced other offshore and one-design yachts successfully, including a Division 1 win and third overall with his Davidson 52 “Prime Example” in the 25th Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. Tony ‘Ace’ Ellis will break the record for the most Hobarts – it will be his 52nd.

As Limit, when owned by Alan Brierty, the yacht last did the Hobart in 2010 and finished 14 th overall. Launched three weeks prior to the 2008 Rolex Sydney Hobart, she finished seventh and then won Auckland Noumea Race line honours and every class (IRC/ORCi/PHRF). Upon returning to Australia, she retired from the 2009 race with rigging issues. This is a very good all-round boat, and a near sistership to the 2011 Rolex Sydney Hobart winner, Loki.

Parents are ditching screen time limits for kids against expert advice

photo illustration of a child with a phone illuminating his face at a close distance

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 26 . This is Jenny Gold. I cover early childhood education for The Times. Here’s what you need to know to start your day.

  • Too much screen time harms children, experts agree. So why do parents ignore them?
  • Newsom attacks ‘delusional California bashers’ in unorthodox speech.
  • A giant meatball is the gateway dish to L.A.’s best new Persian restaurant in years.
  • And here’s today’s e-newspaper

You're reading the Essential California newsletter

Our reporters guide you through our biggest news, features and recommendations every morning

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.

Parents basically ignore screen time limits for young kids

My husband and I have tried to follow the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendations on screen time for our two young children, much to their chagrin. Avoid screens as much as possible for the first two years. Limit screen time to one hour a day of high-quality content from ages 2 to 5.

But then I recently went on a work trip to New York, I came home and soon heard my toddler had a new favorite word: CoComelon . My husband had turned on the TV to distract the kids to cook dinner and do other chores. Our 22-month-old son ratted him out, and CoComelon’s tinkling nursery rhymes have been stuck in my head ever since.

Turns out, my family is far from alone with screen time challenges .

Should parents limit screen time for kids?

A national Common Sense Media survey from 2020 found that few families were coming anywhere close to following the screen time limits recommended by pediatricians — and that was before device use exploded when schools and child-care centers closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers interviewed 1,500 parents of children who were infants to age 8 and found:

  • Children under 2 were watching an average of 49 minutes of digital media a day;
  • Children ages 2 to 4 watch an average of 2.5 hours a day;
  • Children 5 to 8 watch slightly more than three hours a day.

But despite the dire predictions of experts about the risks of excessive screen time for young children — obesity, behavioral problems, sleep issues, speech and developmental delays — parents don’t seem particularly concerned.

The majority of parents surveyed said that they weren’t worried about the amount of time their kids spend with screens, the effect screen media could have on their child or the quality of the content available to them. In fact, they thought screen time was a net positive — helping their children learn to read, boosting creativity and even improving their social skills.

Why is saying no to screens so hard?

It doesn’t help that screens are everywhere. Nearly half of kids ages 2 to 4 and two-thirds of kids ages 5 to 8 have their own mobile device, according to Common Sense Media.

“I really think it’s more complicated than it was for prior generations,” said Dr. Whitney Casares, a Portland pediatrician and author of the book “ Doing It All .” Although TVs have been been popular since the 1950s, they were limited to the home. Cars, restaurants, parks and most other spaces were screen-free zones.

“The access was really different. Sure, kids sat in front of the TV. But parents could turn it off, there weren’t as many options, and it wasn’t on-demand,” Casares said.

Adding to the issue, working parents need to have some type of distraction for their kids, and “screens tend to be the easiest option, the lowest hanging fruit,” she said.

Does screen time affect children’s brain development?

The biggest problem with screen time is what young children aren’t doing while they’re watching — exploring the world and having back-and-forth interactions with caregivers. That’s how babies and toddlers learn, and when they are watching digital media, they lose that time to grow and learn.

This is particularly true for babies and toddlers, because there isn’t a lot of evidence showing they can learn much of anything through screens.

There’s also some limited studies suggesting that children who watched more than the recommended one hour a day had lower development in the parts of the brain dedicated language and early literacy skills.

Will screen time ruin a child?

For preschoolers, there’s evidence that educational shows such as “Sesame Street” can actually help improve literacy and social development, though only in limited amounts.

So to make the most of a child’s screen time, try to limit what they watch to high-quality, educational programming with as few commercials as possible. And whenever possible, watch with them, talk about what you are viewing and ask questions.

When it comes to online videos, it can be much harder to control what your child is watching, and inappropriate content abounds.

A Common Sense Media report on YouTube use found that just 1 in 4 videos viewed by infants to 8-year-olds were educational, and the rest were entertainment. More than a quarter were intended for older audiences, such as gaming videos or compilations of violent content. And 1 in 5 videos showed inappropriate commercials such as ads for lingerie and whiskey.

In general, Jill Murphy, Common Sense Media’s chief content officer, said it’s safer to stick with branded content from a production company that’s intended for young children, which often have child development staff or advisors.

NEW YORK (AP) — Joe Biden and Donald Trump won’t be alone at Thursday’s debate . Moderators Dana Bash and Jake Tapper of CNN will be on camera, too, and there’s a lot on the line for their network as it fights for relevance in a changing media environment.

CNN has hosted dozens of town halls and political forums through the years, but never a general election presidential debate, let alone one so early in a campaign. No network has.

“This is a huge moment for CNN,” said former CNN Washington bureau chief Frank Sesno, now a media and public affairs professor at George Washington University. “CNN has to reassert itself. It has to show that it led a revolution in news before and can do it again.”

As a television network, CNN is struggling at a time many consumers are cutting off cable and most news outlets wonder if the campaign will ignite consumer interest.

Those that remain have expressed a clear preference for opinion programming. Fox News Channel has averaged 2.14 million viewers in prime time this month, with MSNBC at 1.22 million and CNN at 525,000, according to the Nielsen company. That’s down 17% from last June for CNN.

CNN’s chairman and CEO, Mark Thompson, has been with the company for less than a year and has spoken more about the internet than television as an opportunity for growth. Yet it means something that both campaigns chose CNN for the first debate. A well-run, illuminating event can open some eyes and remind people of CNN’s legacy as the first all-news television network. If it goes off the rails, that’s a stain that could take years to wash away.

“This is a hugely consequential moment in this campaign,” said David Chalian, CNN’s vice president and political director. “It’s the earliest presidential debate ever. It’s obviously a huge privilege and a huge responsibility for CNN to host it.”

Looking hard for more viewers

It’s possible — even likely — that CNN won’t even have the biggest American audience on Thursday.

Choosing public service over pure profit, CNN offered to let other networks carry the debate feed; ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, PBS and C-SPAN will all do so. The other networks also have the right to sell their own ad time during the two commercial breaks.

The networks had to agree to CNN’s rules — they must keep CNN’s insignia onscreen and can’t interrupt with their own commentators while the debate airs. Internationally, only CNN is carrying it.

The event, in an Atlanta studio, won’t have a live audience. That was important to the Biden campaign but also to CNN. The network’s town hall with Trump in 2023 was panned in large part because of the presence of Trump partisans.

CNN will also control a mute button, to turn a candidate’s microphone off when his opponent is talking. That’s also reactive; Biden and many viewers were frustrated by Trump’s frequent interruptions during the first of two debates between them in 2020.

When he conducted an unscientific poll among listeners to his SiriusXM radio show, Michael Smerconish said that 90% were in favor of the “mute” button. But Smerconish, who also hosts a weekend show on CNN, counts himself among the 10% who don’t like the idea.

“You run the risk that the debate will become an antiseptic experience,” missing some good give-and-take, Smerconish said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Stay tuned, though. Chalian, who would not say who would be in control of the mute button, said an opponent’s voice may still be picked up if he pipes up. It just won’t be the dominant voice.

The network will not attempt to fact-check the candidates in real time, he said.

“Obviously, if there is some egregious fact that needs to be checked or the record needs to be made clear, Jake and Dana can do that,” he said. “But that’s not their role. They are not here to participate in this debate. They are here to facilitate a debate between Trump and Biden.”

Will CNN offer a fair forum?

Well before the debate, Trump and his supporters have been putting forward the notion that because of CNN’s presence, it won’t be a fair fight. At a campaign rally where he denounced “fake Tapper,” Trump said that he would be debating three people instead of one — even though his campaign agreed in advance to the rules and moderators.

On CNN Monday, the network’s Kasie Hunt cut off an interview with Trump press aide Karoline Leavitt after she repeatedly attacked the moderators.

“Our side has zero expectations that this is going to be a fair debate,” said Tim Graham, director of media analysis at the conservative Media Research Center. “When you watch Tapper and Bash anchor, you get the distinct impression that you’re not going to get a fair debate.”

What Graham will be watching for: How many times will the moderators interrupt Trump and how many times do they stop Biden?

To a large extent, the attitude speaks to how CNN is boxed in commercially. Egged on by Trump, many of his supporters perceive CNN as biased against them, not as a network that follows the facts. And if you oppose Trump and want to see your view reflected, MSNBC is a more satisfying destination.

“Our job is simply to make sure that we are best prepared to facilitate and moderate the debate between the candidates,” Chalian said. “That is our focus. I really try not to pay too much attention to the pre-spin or post-spin. I’m really focused on the debate itself.”

Days before the event, a keep-your-head-down-and-work attitude seems to be how he’s dealing with a pressure-filled event that could choke you if you let it.

“Let’s be clear,” he said. “The stakes are highest for Donald Trump and Joe Biden. They’re the participants in this debate.”

New Florida law will limit public access to images of children up for adoption

To safeguard the privacy of those in the state's foster care system, Florida lawmakers and nonprofit organizations this year championed a measure that would limit online access to images of children up for adoption.

“It’s their story and their life, so youth should have a say,” Republican state Rep. Dana Trabulsy, who represents Fort Pierce in Tallahassee, said in a statement.

The law “gives them a sense of control while protecting their privacy," she said.

The law requires foster care agencies to add extra online guardrails, such as private login mechanisms, to make online photo galleries safer for individuals on their site.

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the bill into law last month and it’s set to take effect July 1st.

Representative Dana Trabulsy serves as a member of the Florida House of Representatives from the 84th district in Fort Pierce.

“Children’s photos and personal information should be off limits to the public,” said Ashley Brown, founder of and CEO Selfless Love Foundation, a Jupiter-based non-profit dedicated to improving the child welfare system.

“And this law will reduce the harmful consequences that can result from public access.”

For the last two years, the foundation has led formal efforts to improve online security after former foster care children expressed first-hand accounts of how public access to their photos had led to bullying incidents in schools and targets of human traffickers.

JR Minter, director of advocacy for Selfless Love Foundation, told WLRN a lot of young adults had referred to the easily accessible online listing as “pet shop,” because of how easy it was to randomly search and select personal information about a potential adoptee.

Janessa Collins, an advocacy coordinator, told WLRN that ”close the pet shop” served as a rallying cry for change.

Minter and young adults formerly in foster care worked with elected officials to add the security measures specifically to the adoption photo listing exchange, a statewide system for adoptive children which features photos and personal descriptions of the individual.

An extra layer of privacy

The state Department of Children and Families typically works with families to address the issues endangering children in private homes.

Ashley Brown, founder of and CEO Selfless Love Foundation, a Jupiter-based non-profit dedicated to improving the child welfare system.

During the adoption process in the child welfare system, DCF contracts with community-based agencies for safe out-of-home placements, case management, and other services.

Many agencies place potential adoptees in readily available photo listing sites that are attached with a personal description of the person.

The new state law adds an extra layer of privacy.

Now, that current public information will only be accessible to prospective adoptive parents , not the general public, according to the new state law.

"There will be some login credentials for individuals and families that are going through the adoption home study process that will then get access to that information,” Minter said. “So that's really impactful.”

And all children 12 years or older will have a say on which photo they’d prefer on photo listings. The law also requires consultation with adults before agencies can develop descriptions for their adoption recruitment.

“This is going to now require that everybody across the state is doing it, not just a few agencies that have been doing it the right way for a while,” Minter said.

Minter said agencies are working with DCF to figure out the next steps in developing and implementing the new adoption exchange law.
