Hurlingham Yacht Club

HMS Victory, Hurlingham Yacht Club, 1922, Dunkirk, D Day 1944.

1922 is the year that the Club took on its current name, though we don't know what it was previously called. We can't discover the connection with HMS Victory (depicted in the painting) nor D-Day. The club's website says that "some of our members took part at Dunkirk" so that, at least, is explained. Victory was built at Chatham, and surely has never come this far up the Thames.

Site: Hurlingham Yacht Club (1 memorial)

SW15, Deodar Road, 43a

To the right of the large painting is a rather old looking board which contains information about the Club and includes a defunct  old web address  for the club.   This one works (2015).  The board also says "A working boatyard since 1927."

Welcome to the Hurlingham Yacht Club

Hurlingham Yacht Club is the sort of place you didn’t know still existed!

The history of club dates back nearly 100 years, and the club has been on its current site for nearly 90 years. Most of the shore-based part of the club sits underneath Fulham Railway Bridge, with the District line trains thundering overhead.  The clubhouse itself is set to one side, with the most amazing views over the Thames and beyond.  The club is run and maintained by its members, and overseen by a Committee.

The club has an impressive range of facilities, including moorings, work yard and a trailer park. We also do a huge amount to help other local community organisations, and we are always willing to make available our resources to them.

Our History

The Club has a proud history dating back around 100 years, and is directly developed from the Yacht Owners Association founded well before the 1914-1918 war. Hurlingham Yacht Club was formed by the remaining members, with premises at the Fulham end of Putney Railway Bridge.  In 1929, the Club relocated to its current site on Deodar Road.  Today, the Club is a very friendly place with excellent facilities, including its own dry-dock, landing stage, dingy trot and over 3,000 feet of moorings. We play a leading role in protecting the environmen t we share with our neighbours, and we have some great plans for the future.

Our Facilities

Perhaps the best way to describe the club is an ‘authentic working boatyard’.  The club sits in the middle of one of the most expensive residential areas in London, yet the down-to-earth, honest character of the place is perhaps what draws people to become members.  If you’re looking for a club to moor your super-yacht while drinking fine champagne, then you’re probably in the wrong place.  But if you love boats, working on them and talking about them over a beer with like-minded people, then you have just stumbled across your new second home. The club has an impressive range of facilitie s , including moorings, dry dock, work yard and a trailer park.

Want to know how the wind score works? Then you should read this explanation .

The wind forecasts come from yr.no (Norwegian Meteorological Institute), and was last updated 1 hour and 23 minutes ago (Monday 20 May 07:28 PM). The next night score shows you the worst hour between 22:00 and 08:00 the next night. We recommend that you check multiple sources for wind forecasts. windy.com is a good website to show larger wind systems.

The safe wind directions for this harbour has been decided by an algorithm, based on how elevated the land around the harbour is. It's mostly correct, but sometimes the underlying data about elevation levels is not good enough to make correct decisions. It's a great help to other if you can validate or adjust the safe wind directions . You can see the data used by the algorithm to decide the safe wind directions by clicking here .

Hurlingham Yacht Club

Hurlingham Yacht Club

1920 – origins of hyc.

Generally it seems accepted that the Club was formed after the first World War. The Yacht Owners Association was almost non existent and then, and, most probably in 1922, the Hurlingham Yacht Club was formed by the remaining members. These were the original Club members, many of whom were ex soldiers who had survived the war.

These first HYC members were generally enthusiastic DIY types, people maintaining their own boats and, if they were not already skilled engineers, they soon learned all the skills needed. They became local tradesmen and shopkeepers. The Club had premises at the Fulham end of the Putney Railway Bridge by what was then named Fulham Station.  The railway had been extended across the river in 1890. The Putney Railway Bridge was designed and built by William Jacobs, Brunel’s assistant. The steamer pier was demolished soon after that.  The station leased premises to the Fulham Yacht Club and it in turn sublet to the HYC.

Here is a 1927 picture of the moorings on the north side of the river at that time.
