Owner review: rolex yacht-master 37 268621.

The Yacht-Master line of Rolex has never been a hugely popular series from the acclaimed watch house. That is not necessarily a bad thing though. This was actually the main reason that I got attracted to the Rolex Yacht-Master 37 268621 in the first place.

There are very few of these that you will actually see in the wild.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 37 268621 has such an elegant profile, it is similar to the case of a modern Datejust and Daytona with lugs slopping down and hugging one’s wrist. So when I got a call from my Rolex authorized dealer last year (I waited for a week…. Yes you read it right, waited only for a week) I didn’t think twice and drove myself the very next day to pick it up in person.

I picked up the less popular 37mm two-tone rose gold version and I absolutely love it. The Rolex rose gold is so warm that one tends to get mesmerized by it (at least I do). The elegance of the profile, shine and tone of the rose gold and weight does not disappoint. I wear this in the office and on the beach… literally an incredibly versatile timepiece.

A lot of people might be wondering why I opted for the Rolex Yacht-Master 37 268621 rather than the popular 40mm. I always prefer the more modest sized watches and thought this one was a good fit on my 6.5 inch wrist. I have a number of 40mm watches in my current collection and I thought the 37mm would be a good addition for a more “classy touch”. It is still a mystery to me why this line has not shoot up in popularity and value. Something deep inside me would prefer to keep it that way… a hidden gem that only a few know and appreciate!

The Oysterflex Bracelet

Highly resistant and durable.

The Yacht-Master’s new Oysterflex bracelet, developed by Rolex and patented, offers a sporty alternative to metal bracelets. The bracelet attaches to the watch case and the Oysterlock safety clasp by a flexible titanium and nickel alloy metal blade.

The blade is overmoulded with high-performance black elastomer which is particularly resistant to environmental effects, very durable and perfectly inert for the wearer of the watch. For enhanced comfort, the inside of the Oysterflex bracelet is equipped with a patented longitudinal cushion system that stabilizes the watch on the wrist and fitted with an 18 ct Everose gold Oysterlock safety clasp. It also features the Rolex Glidelock extension system, designed by the brand and patented. This inventive toothed mechanism, integrated beneath the clasp, allows fine adjustment of the bracelet length by some 15 mm in increments of approximately 2.5 mm, without the use of tools.

Because of all the excitement caused by the launch of the steel and ceramic Daytona ref. 116500LN at Baselworld 2016, it’s easy to forget that there were other new Rolex watches there too. Case in point is the highly attractive, yet somewhat overlooked, Yacht-Master 37 ref. 268622. The ref. 286622 is the smaller version of the Yacht-Master 40 ref. 116622 with the exact same color palette—making these a great pair of matching his and her Rolex watches.  With warmer weather finally on the horizon, let’s dive into the nautical-inspired Yacht-Master 37 ref. 268622.

The Beauty of the Rolesium Yacht-Master 37 

As its name suggests, the Yacht-Master 37 ref. 286622 sports a very wearable 37mm case—perfectly suitable for women. Alternatively, men who prefer a more restrained watch size can certainly wear this particular Yacht-Master too. Dubbed by Rolex as “Rolesium”, this term refers to the use of both stainless steel and platinum on the Yacht-Master.

Both the Oyster case and Oyster bracelet are constructed from stainless steel for optimal robustness and sportiness, while the platinum rotating bezel amps up the luxuriousness. While this Yacht-Master 37 is monochromatic, it is far from boring thanks to different shades and textures. For instance, the matt sandblasted platinum on the bezel is a stunning contrast to the glossy raised numerals. Also, the center polished links of the steel Oyster bracelet pops next to the brushed steel links flanking it. Furthermore, the dark rhodium dial has a sunburst finish, which plays beautifully in the light.

That moody gray dial benefits from a subtle flash of color. And the turquoise seconds hand and turquoise “Yacht-Master” label is the perfect color choice. Encircling the periphery of the dial are the large lume plots with white gold surrounds, in addition to the date window at 3 o’clock. Powering the Rolesium Yacht-Master 37 is the Rolex Caliber 2236 automatic movement. As with all modern Rolex calibers, this is an in-house mechanical movement. It is, of course, a COSC-certified movement, but beyond that, it’s also a “Superlative Chronometer” due to Rolex’s more stringent parameters. In fact, the Caliber 2236 boasts a precision rate of -2/+2 sec/day, while the COSC threshold is only -4/+6 seconds per day.

The functions of the Caliber 2236 include the time and date . But, it also has the instantaneous date feature—meaning that the date “jumps” to the next one at midnight rather than a slow gradual turning of the disc. Additionally, the hacking feature—where the seconds hand comes to a complete stop when the winding crown is out—allows for more precise time adjustments.

Positioned as a luxury watch to wear while sailing aboard a boat (or lunching at the yacht club), the Yacht-Master 37 is water resistant to 330 feet (100 meters). To achieve this, the watertight Oyster case features a monobloc middle case , Triplock winding crown, and fluted caseback.

Bidirectional rotatable bezel, timing the distance.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background.

This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex.

This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.
