Manila Bay Dinner Cruise – Is it Worth Your Time and Money?

On the ferry a staff took my seat number. I flashed my ticket and she led me to the upper deck. I was pleased to be seated up there rather than at the lower deck which was enclosed. Considering it was a weekday, I didn’t expect a full boat, but, on that day, a company booked a group tour and it was quite busy.

As we waited for the rest of the passengers caught in traffic it began to rain so, plastic curtains were pulled down on each side of the deck.

Manila Bay is well-known for its beautiful sunsets and despite the rain that day the sky was coated in warm palettes of orange, pink and blue.

I gazed at the horizon and saw the bright orange sun slowly sinking behind some thick dark clouds. On the other side, haze loomed above the city creating a dramatic skyline. It was what photographers call “the golden hour.”

I settled back at my table and there before me was dinner composed of a bowl of soup and a plate with a slice of pork with some kind of barbeque sauce, breaded fish with mayonnaise, a cup of rice, and some corn and carrots on the side.

Our ferry slowly navigated back to the wharf where we shortly disembarked, and so that concluded our 90-minute cruise.

Cruising is a rare activity for most Manila natives, but anything rare has something unique to offer, so even if you’ve seen Manila Bay countless times, a leisurely boat ride can still be a rewarding experience.

The main take away for me was the opportunity to enjoy a glorious sunset and savor the brilliant evening lights as our ferry swayed on the gentle waters of Manila Bay.

Hi Nadia, the upper deck is better for sightseeing. The stench I mentioned was quite strong at the port but once you’re out in the open sea the air is okay. You might want to bring a shawl or a light jacket since it gets much cooler after sunset. Enjoy!!

Yes, I recommend seating at the upper deck. You’ll enjoy the views better. You won’t have to endure the foul smell at the wharf once you are out in the open sea. Have fun!!

Thank you for visiting and I’m glad you like the article. I guess it depends on your wife’s preferences. If she likes being outdoors and enjoys sightseeing I think she’ll appreciate the experience. I must warn you, the food isn’t great but what I enjoyed the most was watching the sunset and the view of Manila’s skyline during twilight. After the tour you can walk to MOA and enjoy a hot cup of coffee and some dessert at some cafe near the bay. Hope that helps! Wishing you a happy anniversary. 🙂

Hi Iza, I came across your page as I am looking for reviews about manila bay dinner cruise since my girlfriend and I will be celebrating our anniversary in October. As compared to Prestige Cruises, do you think Sun Cruises is good enough? Food tasting wise? Experience wise? Our chosen sailing time would be 6:15pm with Sun Cruises. Do you think we’d be able to see the sunset while sailing in the open sea? I’d really like to get an opinion cuz I don’t want my gf to be dismayed. Thanks for your response.

Hi Manuel, so sorry for the delayed reply. The cruise was fine, I enjoyed it. Although, at the port the breeze can smell really bad. But, like I mentioned in the article above, once you are out in the open sea, the air smells fine. The sightseeing was fun, take the 5:30 p.m. trip if you’d like to enjoy the sunset. The food was not impressive, so I suggest do the cruise then take your girlfriend to a fancy restaurant in MOA afterwards. There are a lot options at the mall. Hope that helps. Manila Bay Sunset Cruise and Dinner Treat For Your Loved Ones This Valentines

I was able to ask one of the guys who are part of running this yacht. He said they follow very high standards when it comes to the safety of this Manila cruise tour. In every trip, 6 people form as a team to make sure that the guests will experience a very good cruise experience. This team is made of one Captain, one Chief Engineer, one Desk Officer, one Oiler and two Able Body Seaman.

Regarding my personal view, I think this yacht needs a retouch. The words "cruise" and "yacht" always meant a bit of luxury so I would suggest to maybe change the type of chairs or tables that reflect this kind of activity. Also, the walls could be painted with live colors and maybe change the type of decors they have. The outside look of M/V Spirit of Manila was very impressive so I think it would be also nice to compliment the look inside. Having said this, if you're looking for a budget kind of cruise, this is perfect. Hope to do a Manila bay dinner cruise with Sun Cruises soon with my family!

Floating Restaurant

It's not everyday you can have your dinner cruise by the bay. When someone's celebrating their birthday, normally to a restaurant, movie, amusement park and concert we go. Here, of course, you would still eat but the experience, view, nature and getting almost but not quite away from the road's traffic, noise and humidity for me are the reasons why we shouldn't miss it. My Mom who was celebrating her 58th birthday as well as my 9yo son truly enjoyed their ride. My Dad and Bro however were impatiently waiting for the food to get served. There were only two assistant crew. A lady who prepares the food and a man who distributes them. We could've not waited for over 30 minutes, before our table be filled with glasses and plates that has pansit, chicken fillet, pork barbeque, biko, rice and iced tea in it, if only they were at least three. The men in red who I assumed were their lifeguards didn't even bother to help. It might not be their job but I was hoping they'd at least offer to take pictures for each table. I see a fast and prompt service they needed to provide so that people will come again.

It was our anniversary and I surprised my wife with a dinner cruise along Manila Bay. Thanks to tripadvisor and I was able to prepare for the pros and cons of this cruise. Well, it was a weekday so the boat was not really fully booked. I booked the lower deck which has an airconditioning system and took our dinner on this level to get rid of the stinky smell of Manila Bay. Actually, the stinky smell is only for the first 10 minutes and last 10 minutes of the trip when it is still near the port. After our dinner (which I agree with other contributors that it's a so-so), we then transferred to the upper deck to enjoy the breeze, the view and the performer. We enjoyed the first two but not the performer as he appears to be a neophyte and knew only a few songs. The staffs are courteous and willing to take pictures when requested. For a Php 550.00 per head, it is worth the trip. Oops, the downside is that there is a terminal fee of Php 30.00. Staying in the terminal is not relaxing as it is so hot.

Cruise is good for family who wants to do something different rather than going to the noisy, crowded malls. Food is not so good. Accommodating staff. Left the terminal late but returned to the terminal on time.

The issue for us is the high contamination of the water that makes the cruise a very unpleasant experience, since you have to be "swallowing" that poop smell the most of the time. So sad that the Manila Bay faces such terrible problem, I wonder if the authorities are planning to take care of this someday? Philippino people are amazing, wonderful and kind. But if this country doesn't take care of this issue sooner, this can be discouraghing tourism, because there are way many places to go for a nice cruise without suffering the stinkiness that Manila Bay and Metro Manila have. Food in the cruise wasn't great so my advise is go ahead and grab some snacks in the terminal before departuring; definitely the staff is the only thing that made the experience some enjoyable. The couple of singers are great, and our guide was really helpful and nice. The whole tour took around 1 hour and in some spots far away from the dock we could breath for a while withouth that disgusting smell to sewerage. But again I hope this issue is taken care by the authorities because is a very big downside. Good luck maganda mamamayang Pilipino ;-) :)

Booked dinner cruise and were dressed and ready to leave motel when they called to tell us it was canceled. Excuse was the bay was choppy and it was safety. That was a lie because we were on the bay and it was an perfectly still night with no wind. They simply didn't sell enough seats. They tried to push another night and I ask for refund and was informed it would take 3 to 4 weeks. I ask them to credit t towards the corregidor cruise and they insisted we come in personally to pay difference before they would make reservations which we had to do or wait a month for refund We tried a week later to book the dinner cruise again and told them our internet wasn't working yet they refused to take reservation on the phone and wanted us to drive across town and pay them in person again or do it online. Even though they had our information on file and once again told us they may be canceling the later cruise. They say they won't take walk ins but yet people were lined up the morning of corregidor cruise buying tickets and that is same thing they told us on dinner cruise. They want you to book online and then keep your money when the cancel . Unethical unprofessional and beware

Recently visited with my family of 5 (kids 16,13 and 9). The boat ride was long was long, but the seats were comfortable and had great air conditioning. They do have drinks and snacks on board for purchase, but it appeared to be just Pepsi and chips. A lot of other passengers brought food and snacks on board which I would highly recommend. The day we visited it was incredibly hot, but luckily the tour takes place on a covered trolley so we didn't have to do a lot of walking. They also have umbrellas that you can use for shade at the drop off points. Water and drinks were for sale on the trolley and at most stops so I recommend bringing plenty of change along. Overall, our tour was amazing! Our tour guide (Armand) was friendly and funny and really made the historical tour interesting even to our teenage boys. The lunch was okay, but what you would expect for a tour buffet. I would highly recommend this tour if you have a free day.

Awesome place for walking and relaxing. Went during Christmas and the area was decorated beautifully.

The SM by the Bay area of the Mall of Asia is the sea-front expanse of land housing multiple options for food and entertainment. Several large buffet-style restaurants are included in the former category, and these typically have lines outside attesting to their popularity. The multiple drinking places that really come alive when the sun goes down also belong here; of these, some offer live bands and alcohol deals as come-ons. There are also several little stalls offering sips and bites, including hotdogs, grilled squid, corn and milk tea. That isn't to say, however, that SM by the Bay isn't kid-friendly. In fact, far from it, as there are rides that hold appeal for the young and the young-at-heart alike. These include a large ferris wheel (the MOA Eye, said to be the tallest and biggest of its kind in the Philippines) that gives spectacular views of the area, a zip line (low and short, sadly) and a small go-kart track. You can also go for a cruise on the bay, if you're in desperate need of some cooling down. Given the proximity to Manila Bay, the heat and brightness are usually overwhelming during the day. Go near sunset but expect a massive crowd, which tapers off towards either end. This includes joggers and dog walkers, especially early in the morning and in the late afternoon, If you're there on a Friday or Saturday,try to catch the one-time fireworks display, which is usually suitably entertaining (but come early or risk missing the best seats due to the number of people).

When I used to live in Pasay, and even when I moved to Taft Avenue, Manila, SM MOA By the Bay, or the breakwater behind the Mall of Asia Complex was my normal jogging route and my favorite place to contemplate and to watch the beautiful Manila Bay sunset. The place can get quite full at times, especially during the weekends when there are fireworks displays at night, but I love how serene and peaceful this place could be during early mornings when everyone is out jogging and walking. You can also see a lot of pet owners taking their doggies out for a stroll. The place is wide and has a really nice view of the water. At times, it stinks of really bad sewage but most of the time, it is clean and free from floating debris. What I love about the place though is the energy of other runners and jogs thate is pure infectious - nakakahiya to be tamad or slow when everyone else is sweating it out. At night, it transforms into a relaxing place where you can bring a date or a a friend and just talk about things over pop corn, corndogs or spun sugar which are readily sold in the stalls and mobile carts nearby. You can also bring your entire family and duck into one of the restaurants that line the strip right next to the water. Surely, the kids will enjoy a ride on the carousels and other extreme rides in the area. No matter how jeje and low-key that sounds, it's a very enjoyable and inexpensive place to just relax and let the hours tick by.

This was such a great mall, Number 4 out of 10 of the biggest malls in the Philippines. My friend and I took a bus down to Manila to pick up her mom from the airport but we were really early and had time to kill, so we took a bus to MOA, and by the time we got to the mall, the mall was still closed since we got there around 8am. We walked through MOA, I realized it was an indoor and outdoor mall, anyway we walked through it and went to the bayside of it and looked at the ocean. You can smell the salt in the air combined with the humidity. So much people were exercising and walking around in the morning by the bayside as well. We went here in December (I'm from California) and I was sweating so early in the morning on a December...I'm not used to the climate here but anyway, it was a nice view, only thing that killed it for me was that there was so much trash around the rocks. Regardless,this place is a nice place to just relax and spend time with friends and family.

My lobster may be a big fan of the sea, but I'm not. Not in this particular spot anyway. The first time I went to this area, I was acutely aware of just how smelly the whole place is - and not the good, sea breeze smell, too. It's more the accumulated garbage and radioactive muck in Manila Bay getting steamed by the sun, and their vapors wafting to the people on the shore. Ah, such a pretty picture. Once you get past that though (if you can), there's a load of places you can spend time here. There are a bunch of buffet restaurants lining the bay, as well as a little dampa place where you can buy fresh seafood and ask some of the restaurants there to cook it for you, for a nominal fee. If you just want to relax, you can pick a spot on the seawall (I recommend the area near the hypermarket, since that's always empty) and enjoy the famous Manila Bay sunset.

If you think this place is full during the weekends, you have no idea. My girlfriend and I welcomed the New Year here, along with just about every person in Metro Manila, and you couldn't move without accidentally falling into Manila Bay. We were also here during the One Direction concert, which was actually worse (maybe because they were still singing - I'd rather swim in Manila Bay). All in all though, MOA By The Bay is quite agreeable if it can handle that much people and keep going. I half expected MOA's patch of reclaimed land to break off and float to China (or get claimed by China, either way). When it isn't hosting an event, it's also a good place to hang out. You can find a spot on the seawall and enjoy the breeze, or you can choose one out of the many restaurants along the bay for a bite.

Was taken here by colleagues on my last night in Manila and glad they saved this to the end and it was a lovely evening. We go there early evening and watched the fireworks display. There are many activities around like Segway and zip lining. A really lively atmosphere. A huge shopping complex with cinema and restaurants. I think this is where people come when it rains as you can find almost every entertaining thing to do.

Fireworks by the bay

A bit of a story, but during my last semester as a senior in high school, my mom decided I should quit the bus and commute to school to prepare me for the long commute that would await me once I started going to Ateneo, where I'd have to commute from our little village in Paranaque to Katipunan, Quezon City. My high school wasn't far, it was in Makati and the commute was nothing more but a 30-minute jeep ride (on bad traffic days) and a 30 minute walk from the overpass in Magallanes to the school. During my first few days commuting, I fell asleep on the bus (rookie mistake) and woke up in MoA. Too damn tired to commute to the class that I was already late for, I spent 3 hours just sitting by the bay and watching the sea. It was unexpectedly a very good day, and since then I've always enjoyed spending time in MoA by the bay, even if the bay isn't as scenic as it would be in say, Batangas or La Union. It's a great place to walk around and talk with a friend, or a date. You can walk along the bay and watch the ocean, and buy food from the stalls situated every few feet. You can even make it a cash-free sort of thing and pack lunch and eat it by the bay (as long as you don't throw any of it into the water). There are also a strip of restaurants lining the area, and some attractions like a ferris wheel and boat tours, but really, the star of the show is ultimately Manila Bay - despite the trash and the murky waters, at night it's a sight to behold, with the boats docked and the moon reflected in the water, it makes you thankful that we live in a country that keeps the sea in arm's reach.

SM MOA By The Bay isn't my first choice to visit for dinner or entertainment mostly because of the location and the huge crowd. This area is host to a ton of gigantic buffet chains which miraculously seem to be filled every time we go here. This place is for people who enjoy big crowds or are part of big family who have big appetites. Aside from the buffet dining you can also enjoy the mini theme park set-up they've got going which include a giant ferris wheel, pirate ship, a short zipline and a tiny go-kart track. This is great for all the kiddies and those kids at heart to try and enjoy. Lastly, MOA is right next to Manila Bay which is great during the nearing sunset hours to get a great view and enjoy the breeze. Any time earlier will probably cause a sunburn if you're not careful (unless of course you go during the colder months of the year) so be prepared! The night life in this area is also a buzz with activity as the rides are still open til then and also are the numerous restaurants.

Sweeping, sculpted curves give Lady Lara a feminine elegance and the interior reportedly flows just as sinuously. Lady Lara is a private yacht and following her maiden voyage to Norway, she headed to Florida, the Bahamas and the Eastern Caribbean islands for the winter season.

Lady Lara features a displacement steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. She was built to Lloyds Register classification society rules.

This luxury yacht is also fitted with ‘zero speed stabilizers’ which work at anchor, increasing on-board comfort when the yacht is stationary, particularly in rough waters.

Who is alexander mashkevitch.

Mashkevich was born in Frunze, Kyrgyz SSR, Soviet Union, in 1954. His father Anton, a doctor born in Lithuania, and his mother, Rakhel Yoffe, a lawyer born in Vitebsk, were evacuated to Kyrgyzstan in 1941. His family background is Lithuanian Jewish.

He is a graduate of Kyrgyz State University where he studied philology. Mashkevich started out an academic career but became a businessman during perestroika. Mashkevich, Patokh Chodiev, and Alijan Ibragimov form “the Trio,” a group of Kazakh businessmen who became billionaires. The Trio gained control of the recently privatized chromium, alumina, and gas operations in Kazakhstan (some of the largest ones in the world).

Mashkevich is one of the owners of Alferon Management. Based in London, Alferon Management has acquired mining operations in different places: Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Kosovo, Russia, and other countries.

In 2010 he was on the Forbes list of billionaires at #287. In 2017, he was on the list at #1098, with a worth of $1.9 billions. Now his worth is 3 billion dollars.

She has accommodations for 18 guests and 19 crew members on board. The VIP suites have fold-down balconies that add to the grandeur.

The onboard atmosphere is bright and inviting with subtle finishes. The entertainment areas are open to provide more sheltered and intimate formal spaces.

The yacht has an extensive health and beauty center with a spa and an expansive beach club.

She has a white aluminum superstructure and teak decks throughout. The exterior is accented by underwater lights, which illuminate her at the night.

The LADY LARA yacht is a 91m superyacht with a beam of 14.82m and a draft of 4m. The vessel reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots.

She is powered by 2 MTU engines and has a displacement of 2,945 gross tons.

She features an advanced stabilization system that provides guests with the best comfort levels on board by minimizing the rolling motion of the vessel. The $180 million yacht has a $14 – $15 million annual running cost.

A $1.4 Million-Per-Week Yacht Charter Experience

Y.CO has just welcomed the 298-foot Lürssen Lady Lara to the charter fleet. The lowest weekly base rate is $1.4 million for bookings this winter in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

The yacht is also listed for sale—at more than $254 million—for the first time since the German shipyard delivered it in 2015. Y.CO’s Max Bulley and Gary Wright, along with Merle Wood of Merle Wood & Associates, represented the yacht at the recent Monaco Yacht Show.

“With Lürssen quality and stunning Reymond Langton design, Lady Lara is an exceptional yacht that was conceived with family living in mind,” Wright stated in a press release. “Her adaptable spaces, variety and flexibility, in addition to all the amazing features like the breathtaking spa area, the beach club and two pools, are ideal for multigenerational groups and put Lady Lara into a league of her own.”

Accommodations are for 12 guests in their choice of eight staterooms (for private use, the yacht is built to accommodate 16 guests). Six of the guest staterooms are on the main deck, with one on the lower deck. The master suite has its own private deck with an exterior terrace, outdoor hot tub, and indoor library. The aft-deck space in the owner’s area is called a “winter garden,” with sliding glass panels that can be closed to shelter diners from the elements.

There also are two cabins for owner’s staff or supernumeraries, in addition to the yacht’s quarters for 27 crew.

Onboard amenities include an aft-deck pool whose floor can be raised to create a dance floor. A sound system on this deck helps to create a discotheque-style environment for parties. There’s another pool up on the sundeck, this one with a swim-up bar.

On the bridge deck, guests have access to the spa, which includes a hammam, massage room, treatment room, beauty salon and gymnasium. Guests who prefer to get their exercise outdoors can do so from the beach club at water level, which has a steam room and a sauna along with a sunbathing area.

For rainy days and relaxing nights, the lower deck aboard Lady Lara includes a cinema. There’s also a touch-and-go helipad on board, if guests want to escape to a different spot up the coast.

How fast can Lady Lara cruise? According to Y.CO, the yacht has a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots, which is plenty fast for exploring the islands.

California Yacht Club is located at: 4469 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey, CA 90292 .

• If driving, please park in the CYC visitor’s lot adjacent to Admiralty Way and accessed from the driveway which is between Café del Rey and the Warehouse Restaurant.
• Once parked, proceed by foot and enter the member’s parking lot by passing by the main entry gate.
• After passing the main entry gate, continue walking, bearing hard left along the chain link fence at the north end of the large parking lot until it ends at a dark green shade cloth covered rowing shed.
• We meet, at the rowing sheds which are opposite the tall bamboo plants separating the Warehouse Restaurant and CYC.

Participants should bring: athletic shoes (running shoes), socks, shorts, shirts, sunscreen, water, a change of clothes,

towel and personal items (hats, sunglasses, orthotics, inhalers, etc).

To keep all the gear organized, a small duffel bag or back pack is recommended.

Clothes should fit reasonably tightly so while rowing, hands won’t get caught in shirts and shorts won’t get caught in the sliding seats.

Dressing in layers and using wicking type fabrics is recommended.

Peter Duncan and Relative Obscurity Return to the Podium as J/70 World Champion at California Yacht Club

Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity has prevailed over 60 other teams and challenging wind conditions to capture the 2021 J/70 World Championship title at California Yacht Club, today. In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.

“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

The J/70 is 22.75 feet with an 11 foot long cockpit and deck-stepped carbon mast for easy rigging and stepping.

The crew shall consist of 3 or more persons. The number of crew shall not be changed during an event.

The J/70 Class has been created as a strict one-design Class where the true test when racing is between crews and not boats and equipment.

Well, chances are it will not be like Day 1 of the Pre-Worlds. Maybe more like Day 2. But then again, this is MdR—anything can happen.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.

California Yacht Club was established in 1922 and boated its' first competitive rowing team back in the 1930's. In 1977, after a long hiatus, Stan Mullin, Ken Jacobs and Charles Hathaway reactivated rowing at the Club. CYC rowers now number about 60, and represent all abilities, ages and motivations.
