Craig Morgan’s “Redneck Yacht Club” is The Best Second Hit Song Ever

Craig Morgan - Redneck Yacht Club

Most of us have already had our fill of summer fun, right? Such as drinking beer and just having a good time with our friends and family. Craig Morgan’s album My Kind of Livin’, which features two of his greatest hits , captures the same vibe. “Redneck Yacht Club” and “That’s What I Love About Sunday.”

“Redneck Yacht Club,” the second single from his album My Kind of Livin’, was released in 2005. It reached number two on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, trailing Keith Urban’s “Better Life.”

Peter Zavadil directed the music video, which was shot at Tennessee’s Percy Priest Lake. Morgan may be seen having the fun of his life with his buddies in the summer heat. The music is lively in a way that will make your body sway.

That might be why so many listeners fell in love with it. So much so that the RIAA awarded the song a GOLD for 500,000 sales and another GOLD for digital downloads. Thom Shepherd and Steve Williams wrote the song initially.

As of 2022, the music video on YouTube still has a reasonably high number of views, with around 26 million views in total. The music video includes a soothing background track and an upbeat vibe. That might be the reason why so many listeners, both old and new, were able to resonate with it.

And for some additional fun fact about the song, Blake Shelton , Aaron Tippin , and other country music stars also made a cameo appearance in the said music video. The party that the group of devoted friends is throwing represents the enjoyment they experience on the lake “all summer long.”

On the other hand, Craig Morgan once told USA Today that he believes ‘redneck’ was once regarded as a negative word, but that is no longer the case. For him, it’s now more of a way of life than anything else.

So, if you’re searching for a song to listen to while driving to the beach this summer, Craig Morgan’s “Redneck Yacht Club” is definitely a great choice. You may listen to the song right now by clicking here.

Craig Morgan Shares How Jelly Roll, Blake Shelton, and Lainey Wilson Became Part of New EP, ‘Enlisted’

Craig Morgan released his anticipated new collection of songs. On the new EP, Enlisted, Morgan shared a couple of new tracks, along with a handful of re-recorded hits from his decades-long career. The album includes guest appearances from some of the hottest names in the genre, including Jelly Roll and Lainey Wilson.

American Songwriter caught up with Morgan to ask him about the genesis of the new record. How did one idea lead to the next and then lead to the new EP? Morgan gave insight into the recording process and also talked about what he loves most about country music.

[RELATED: Blake Shelton, Lainey Wilson Appear on Craig Morgan’s New EP]

American Songwriter: What do you love most about Country music?

Craig Morgan: I love the fact that I think country music is most representative of the majority of the people of this nation. Middle America. Those dots on the map, those farmlands. Even those cities where people celebrate a sense of freedom that isn’t celebrated in any other country.

And I think country music represents that better than any other format. And I also believe that country music is a lot more kind and loving than I think some of the other formats can be. It’s just really Middle America. I really believe that. I believe that country music represents the majority of the people of this nation.

AS: What was the genesis of your new EP? It obviously features a number of guests and some of your biggest songs. But how did it come together?

CM: Yeah, it all started—my managers tried to get me to re-record “Redneck Yacht Club” over a year ago and I said I’m not re-recording “Redneck Yacht Club.” I’m just not going to do it. I’ve got too many good songs that are new songs that I want people to hear. And I’m at the point in my career where I felt like I could do that. And I had written a song—I had just finished writing a song called “Raise the Bar” with Billy Dean. And I went into the studio to record it for a new project for the label that we were going to pitch to them and in the process of doing it, me and Phil, my co-producer, we were like, man, this is a big song. I said, “We should pitch this to Luke [Combs]. I might not do it myself, let’s pitch it to Luke.”

And then, like I said, after I finished all the vocals, I said, “You know what, I am keeping the song. But let’s see if Luke will do it with me. That would be a cool thing.” Luke Combs. Love him, a good kid, and, a good friend. You know, just everything about this would be perfect. So, we did. And Luke agreed. And that’s what started it off. So, then the manager re-approached me and said, “Hey, instead of just re-recording ‘Redneck Yacht Club’ what if you do it with another artist like you did that song with Luke.” And I said, “Yeah, that’s a great idea. I’m going to call Blake [Shelton].” Because Blake was in the video of the original recording.

So, I called Blake and he said yeah and that’s kind of where it started. And then we thought, “Hey if we’re going to do one, we might as well do a couple or three more hits.” At this time Jelly Roll and “Almost Home” had become a big deal. Everybody talks about what it meant to Jelly but they fail to realize what that whole scenario meant to me, as well. Hearing that story that Jelly shared on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. So I called Jelly, and he said yes. “That’s What I Love About Sunday,” I knew Gary LeVox, we’ve been friends for a long time, and I knew that song—he had always loved that song. In fact, there were times that he told me he wished Rascal Flatts had recorded it before me. So, I called him, and he said yes.

And [by now] we were down to the song, “International Harvester,” and we were talking about it and I said, “Y’all might think I’m crazy but I think Lainey Wilson would be perfect on this song.” Just because that she can give a perspective that no one has ever seen before. A female up on a combine. And there’s a lot of ‘em. So, I called her and of course, here we are now. She said yes and, man, it’s just turned into one of my favorite projects. It was all done, mastered, and turned in, and I wrote a song with Phil O’Donnell, Trent Willman, and another guy called “That Ain’t Gonna Be Me.” And I said, look, I want to put this song on this project. I know it’s just me singing it but I think it would be a nice touch, even if we do it as, like, a hidden track or something like that.

So, I went in and recorded it and in the process of being in the studio, I said, “Y’all, what if we get Trace [Adkins] to do this?” And everybody thought it was great and we called Trace and he came in and did it with me. In fact, when Trace got into the studio, he started singing the first verse and I said, “Y’all going to think I’m nuts but I think Trace should start this song not me.” Even though it’s my song, my project, I think he needs to be on the front of it and that’s where we ended up. Now the rest hopefully will be great history.

AS: The EP is going to do great.

CM: And we’re doing vinyl!

AS: Like many, you’ve experienced serious tragedy in your life. How does music and perhaps this EP help you cope, and move forward?

CM: I’m not like most folks. I do appreciate that music has a big impact—on my coping and all the things that I get, I get from God, and my family. I do appreciate that music can be and is very healing. I mean, for God’s sake, I wrote a song called, “ The Father, My Son, And The Holy Ghost .” But I tell people, I did not write that song, God wrote that song. And I did not release that song for my benefit, I just felt like I was really driven and forced, basically, I felt like that was something that God wanted. And it happened. Because, like I said, I never intended to write anything like that.

God just woke me up one morning and He wrote that through me and here we are. A song that was never played on the radio for the most part. I mean, it got some airplay. But it wasn’t a No. 1. But it became the No. 1 most downloaded song of all genres, not once, twice or three times. But four times! That’s what God can do. That happened because there were people who needed that.

Songwriters sue, saying: You can't use 'Redneck Yacht Club'

During tough economic times, Nashville songwriters push harder to protect witty lyrics.

  • By Patrik Jonsson Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor

September 9, 2009 | Atlanta

Who can forget the Redneck Yacht Club?

The 2005 hit by country crooner Craig Morgan , written by Nashville lyricists Thom Shepherd and Steve Williams , conjured up a summer day of Dixie bliss, with Bayliners and party barges "strung together like a floating trailer park."

The image was priceless, and the single did pretty well, too, peaking at No. 2 on the country charts.

But in an industry desperately looking for fresh revenues, protecting phrases that evoke an idea or milieu is becoming ever more crucial as total country CD sales slid by 23 million units in the past year alone.

Messrs. Shepherd and Williams filed suit in US District Court in Nashville last week against a Fort Myers , Fla. , off-road recreational park that purloined the name. Last month, the songwriters also sued a Colorado T-shirt maker for selling "Redneck Yacht Club" shirts that, they claim, impinge on merchandise sold on the official redneckyachtclub.com website.

"This is a [case] of interest," says intellectual-property attorney Kevin Parks , who specializes in the music industry at Leydig, Voit & Mayer in Chicago .

"Not every song title rises to the level of something that is usable in an expanded way, but these guys have recognized that they're onto a little something here, and they want to stake a claim," he says.

Following the lead of perennial beachmeister Jimmy Buffett , who trademarked the phrases "Margaritaville" and "Cheeseburger in Paradise," the Nashville songwriters applied for a US trademark in 2005.

"That term didn't exist until we came up with it," Shepherd told the Tennessean newspaper this week.

Trademarking witty phrases is a good start for an industry hurt by file sharing and the general economy. "Should we be doing it? Heck, yes," Nashville attorney Steven Gladstone told the Tennessean. "We should be thinking of all the things we can do to create revenues and sustain the industry."

Yet Shepherd and Williams may face "an uphill battle," says Mr. Parks, the property-rights attorney.

A quick check on the US Patent and Trademark Office 's website shows that the pair applied for a trademark in 2005, but the deadline for final approval was extended in order to demonstrate "actual use" of the title, which, according to government records, they have not yet done. "Actual use" means they have created an enterprise beyond the phrase itself.

"[The pending trademark approval] will be an issue for them in a lawsuit," says Parks. And perhaps a lesson to other songwriters hoping to turn a lyrical concoction into a cash enterprise.

How Two U.S. Soldiers Strong-Armed Craig Morgan into Writing His New Song

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

When Capts. Andrew Yacovone and Justin Wright, two Army Rangers who moonlight as the country-music duo Interstate 10, performed at the USO’s 75th anniversary reception in Washington, D.C., in 2016, they didn’t really expect to leave as Nashville songwriters.

But they were determined to try.

Craig Morgan , the country singer and Grand Ole Opry member who has endeared himself to U.S. servicemen and women for his own military service with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, was the featured guest at the gala, and Yacovone and Wright had a plan to pitch him a song. With the help of the USO public affairs officer, the active-duty soldiers — Yacovone is stationed in Stuttgart, Germany; Wright is at Fort Campbell, Kentucky — met Morgan backstage and told him flat-out that he wasn’t leaving until he wrote a song with them.

“I can’t tell you how many hundreds of people have come up to me with an idea for a song, but there was something special about that night and these two guys. It was an energy,” Morgan tells Rolling Stone during a joint Zoom interview with Yacovone and Wright.

“We were plotting how to get Craig alone to do some jamming and we decided we’d just straight up ask him to write with us,” says Wright.

“We already had it planned out,” Yacovone says. “On my phone, we had our song ideas. I read through the list and Craig stopped at ‘Sippin’ on the Simple Life.’ He said, ‘Tell me what that is.'”

Yacovone and Wright filled Morgan in on the gist of the song, a breezy escapist track that the soldiers say was inspired by long stretches away from home. In addition to going through training together at Fort Benning, Georgia, they served alongside each other for two tours in Afghanistan.

“In the army, you go through these times where you have to get inside your mind and find the light at the end of the tunnel,” Wright says. “You’re often thinking of all the places you dream up in the summertime back at home. A lot of our [song] ideas are all about that. We’ve been through Ranger school together and two deployments in Afghanistan. During those times, I’m just like, ‘Man, I want to be on the beach. I want to be sippin’ on the simple life.'”

Morgan was sold and recruited his bandleader Mike Rogers to help turn the soldiers’ rough sketch into a fully formed song right there on the spot. Morgan says “Sippin’ on the Simple Life” reminded him of “Redneck Yacht Club,” his 2005 radio smash.

“As much as I love that song and it was a big hit for us, I feel like this is a better song. The imagery is so much clearer and so much more relatable,” Morgan says. “You don’t have to have water to sip on the simple life. You can do that anywhere.”

But after the impromptu writing session, Yacovone and Wright didn’t hear much more about it. As far as they knew, “Sippin’ on the Simple Life” dried up. Then Wright got a call at his office in Fort Campbell two years to the day from when they wrote it. It was Morgan, telling him he was going to record the song for his next album, the just released God, Family, Country , and asking him to attend the session.

“I had flipped out. I told my chain of command, ‘Sir, I have to tell you about this thing that has happened,” says Wright, who asked for and received approval to travel to Nashville to join Morgan in the studio.

For Morgan, the chance to collaborate with the soldiers on something as simple as a song underscores the unshakable bond shared by both active-duty and veteran service members.

“Even though the three of us didn’t serve together — I wasn’t in Afghanistan with them and they weren’t with me in Panama — we share a relationship,” he says. “There is something unique about that and is difficult to put into words. We have a sense of loyalty to each other that is shared unlike any other occupation in the world.”

Now, they also all share a songwriting credit.

“I thought, ‘God, they had the balls to come up to me and say, ‘We’re writing this,'” Morgan says. “But it was fun and I thank God it happened because of where we’re at now with this song.”

Judge shows mercy to ex-Romulus mayor who spent campaign money on yacht club, wedding

who wrote redneck yacht club

Former Romulus Mayor LeRoy Burcroff used campaign funds to help pay for his daughter's yacht club wedding, his yacht club dues and a Florida vacation with friends — but he isn't going to prison for any of it, despite his guilty plea.

Instead, a federal judge on Thursday gave the convicted ex-politician three years' probation and four months' home confinement, sparing him a prison sentence that the government sought. Federal prosecutors had requested that Burcroff be locked up for 14 months for betraying the public's trust by using more than $15,000 in campaign money for personal spending.

"The residents of Romulus, Michigan, put their trust in defendant LeRoy Burcroff. Those who supported the defendant with their wallet and their vote likely never expected this aspiring politician to spend their hard-earned money on a family wedding, a Florida vacation with friends or a yacht club membership," Assistant U.S. Attorney Eaton P. Brown wrote in a sentencing memo that urged the judge to lock Burcroff up.

"Sadly, over a period of over four years, the defendant made a mockery of the city’s slogan — the 'Home of Opportunity' — by stealing thousands of dollars in campaign donations to enhance his lifestyle."

Brown added: "The defendant’s deceit and dishonesty must be punished."

'I made some terrible mistakes, made some terrible decisions'

Burcroff, though, convinced U.S. District Judge Denise Paige Hood to show him mercy. In a letter to the judge, the 59-year-old father and grandfather described himself as a prayerful man and avid community volunteer who was lucky enough to marry his high school sweetheart, raise children with her and pass down his family's theme to his kids: "Always do the right thing."

As for his crime — he pleaded guilty to wire fraud in 2022, admitting he used $4,500 in campaign funds to help cover his daughter's yacht-club wedding — he wrote:

"I agonize everyday over what I did. I wish I could do things over, but I know I can't."

He went on to say:

"I never thought I would be in this position standing before a judge, admitting to breaking the law, and asking for your leniency. ... I made some terrible mistakes, made some terrible decisions. ... I am so sorry."

While Burcroff pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud, he did not admit during his plea hearing to using more than $15,000 in campaign money for personal reasons, which is what he was charged with.

According to the government, in addition to using campaign money to help pay for a wedding bar tab and church ceremony fees, Burcroff also did the following:

  • In 2017, he used campaign money to overpay his membership dues at the Belleville Yacht Club. When the club realized the mistake, management wrote a $2,000 check to reimburse him for what they believed was an oversight. "This was no misstep, however," prosecutors wrote in court documents. "Upon receiving the reimbursement, (he) promptly deposited the sum into his personal bank account."
  • In 2014, Burcroff bought a $23,000 Ford Focus with campaign funds that he used “extensively for personal purposes,” then later bought a $27,000 Jeep Wrangler that he used for “similar impermissible personal excursions.”
  • In March 2018, he bought his way onto the board of a local trade organization, Power Transmission Distributors Association, by making a $1,000 donation to the group from his campaign account.
  • In January 2019, he flew his wife and two friends to Florida for a weekend vacation — courtesy of his campaign donors. The couples stayed in a luxury hotel and dined in fine restaurants to the tune of more than $4,000 — all of which was billed to the campaign. The friends who accompanied him on the trip reimbursed him for their portion of the vacation. Burcroff then deposited the friends' money into his personal account, thus doubling his money.

In 2020, after WXYZ broke details about Burcroff's campaign scheme, Burcroff reimbursed his campaign $35,000.

Following Burcroff's sentencing hearing, U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison stated that Burcroff’s conviction and sentence"underscores our commitment to ensuring that" communities in southeast Michigan "are represented by public officials who have integrity and are seeking office not for their self-interest, but for the good of the people they are elected to represent.”

Added Detroit's FBI chief Cheyvoryea Gibson: "The former mayor's actions severely undermined the confidence of those who bestowed trust and faith in him and his office. ... We will not tolerate misconduct and will do everything we can to ensure justice is served."

Le Corbusier’s triumphant return to Moscow

who wrote redneck yacht club

The exhibition of French prominent architect Le Corbusier, held in The Pushkin Museum, brings together the different facets of his talent. Source: ITAR-TASS / Stanislav Krasilnikov

The largest Le Corbusier exhibition in a quarter of a century celebrates the modernist architect’s life and his connection with the city.

Given his affinity with Moscow, it is perhaps surprising that the city had never hosted a major examination of Le Corbusier’s work until now. However, the Pushkin Museum and the Le Corbusier Fund have redressed that discrepancy with the comprehensive exhibition “Secrets of Creation: Between Art and Architecture,” which runs until November 18.

Presenting over 400 exhibits, the exhibition charts Le Corbusier’s development from the young man eagerly sketching buildings on a trip around Europe, to his later years as a prolific and influential architect.

The exhibition brings together the different facets of his talent, showing his publications, artwork and furniture design alongside photographs, models and blueprints of his buildings.

Art-Moscow fair targets younger art collectors

Irina Antonova, director of the Pushkin Museum, said, “It was important for us to also exhibit his art. People know Le Corbusier the architect, but what is less well know is that he was also an artist. Seeing his art and architecture together gives us an insight into his mind and his thought-processes.”

What becomes obvious to visitors of the exhibition is that Le Corbusier was a man driven by a single-minded vision of how form and lines should interact, a vision he was able to express across multiple genres.

The upper wings of the Pushkin Museum are separated by the central stairs and two long balconies. The organizers have exploited this space, allowing comparison of Le Corbusier’s different art forms. On one side there are large paintings in the Purist style he adapted from Cubism, while on the other wall there are panoramic photographs of his famous buildings.

Le Corbusier was a theorist, producing many pamphlets and manifestos which outlined his view that rigorous urban planning could make society more productive and raise the average standard of living.

It was his affinity with constructivism, and its accompanying vision of the way architecture could shape society, which drew him to visit the Soviet Union, where, as he saw it, there existed a “nation that is being organized in accordance with its new spirit.”

The exhibition’s curator Jean-Louis Cohen explains that Le Corbusier saw Moscow as “somewhere he could experiment.” Indeed, when the architect was commissioned to construct the famous Tsentrosoyuz Building, he responded by producing a plan for the entire city, based on his concept of geometric symmetry.

Falling foul of the political climate

He had misread the Soviet appetite for experimentation, and as Cohen relates in his book Le Corbusier, 1887-1965, drew stinging attacks from the likes of El Lissitsky, who called his design “a city on paper, extraneous to living nature, located in a desert through which not even a river must be allowed to pass (since a curve would contradict the style).”

Not to be deterred, Le Corbusier returned to Moscow in 1932 and entered the famous Palace of the Soviets competition, a skyscraper that was planned to be the tallest building in the world.

This time he fell foul of the changing political climate, as Stalin’s growing suspicion of the avant-garde led to the endorsement of neo-classical designs for the construction, which was ultimately never built due to the Second World War.

Situated opposite the proposed site for the Palace of the Soviets, the exhibition offers a tantalizing vision of what might have been, presenting scale models alongside Le Corbusier’s plans, and generating the feeling of an un-built masterpiece.

Despite Le Corbusier’s fluctuating fortunes in Soviet society, there was one architect who never wavered in his support . Constructivist luminary Alexander Vesnin declared that the Tsentrosoyuz building was the "the best building to arise in Moscow for over a century.”

The exhibition sheds light on their professional and personal relationship, showing sketches and letters they exchanged. In a radical break from the abstract nature of most of Le Corbusier’s art, this corner of the exhibition highlights the sometimes volatile architect’s softer side, as shown through nude sketches and classical still-life paintings he sent to Vesnin.

“He was a complex person” says Cohen. “It’s important to show his difficult elements; his connections with the USSR, with Mussolini. Now that relations between Russia and the West have improved, we can examine this. At the moment there is a new season in Le Corbusier interpretation.” To this end, the exhibition includes articles that have never previously been published in Russia, as well as Le Corbusier’s own literature.

Completing Le Corbusier’s triumphant return to Russia is a preview of a forthcoming statue, to be erected outside the Tsentrosoyuz building. Even if she couldn’t quite accept his vision of a planned city, Moscow is certainly welcoming him back.

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.

Had a large group dinner here. Food was above average and service quite good. The real attraction is the view of Moscow from the river on a nice night. Great place for a larger group dinner. More
