Loved by Our Clients

We had a blast chartering with Great Escapes. Clay and Lindsay are both welcoming, genuine, and professional. We had a fun charter, celebrating a birthday...we took so many photos, saw dolphins, and a beautiful sunset! The whole experience was smooth from the booking process to the actual day of sailing. 10/10 recommend. Can't wait to do it again!

Beautiful catamaran sailing in Galveston Bay

My wife and I scheduled a 3 hour morning cruise with Captain Matt on a Thursday and were pleasantly surprised that the charter went on as scheduled since only three people showed up. Captain Matt was a great host and really went out of his way to make sure we had an enjoyable time. It was a wonderful day on the Bay with plenty of sunshine and the right amount of wind which made for a great sailing experience. The beverages were cold and good with quite a selection to choose from and the music Captain Matt played via his phone was both relaxing and fit the sailing theme. Captain Matt was quite the coversationalist and had many stories to share with us, which kept us laughing all the while. Afterwards, my wife and I laid out on the front of the Cat relaxing and listening to music while not paying attention to the time when Captain Matt asked if we had any plans to be anywhere. As it turns out, our cruise had run over by about 40 minutes or so and Captain Matt gave us the option of motoring to get us back sooner or just leisurely sailing back; of course we opted for the second choice. All total, this amounted to an additional hour out on the water. We are very thankful for the sailing experience we had with Captain Matt and look forward to doing it again...perhaps we will do the Sunset tour next time...I highly recommend Sailaway Clear Lake charters and Captain Matt for all your charter sailing needs.

My hub & I wanted a relaxing, educational & just plain fun experience sailing in Clearlake/Galveston Bay. The hub had been on a regular small sailboat before, but neither of us had been on a catamaran. It is so smooth yet exciting...the boat is clean & so comfortable. Best of all is the professional & personableness of Captain Matt. We enjoyed his company & conversation, also his selection of music. He even extended our cruise for longer than we planned! We couldn't have asked for better & will be back!

Last Saturday my family went out with Captain Matt. He was ready for us and the perfect captain. Some of the family wanted instruction on how to sail, and Matt was great. We all had a great experience and would definitely rent from him again.

Matt is as equally a wonderful host as he is a Captain. We took a sunset charter, brought a picnic (we forgot paper plates but Matt had a stash) and enjoyed a three hour sailing cruise. The boat is clean, safe and can comfortably accommodate a group of people. He has a great music system as well. Looking for a relaxing time on the water with a great Captain and boat? Call Matt.

My boyfriend and I have been dating for 5 years and surprised me on our anniversary by taking me sailing. Captain Matt was so accommodating and polite. He made sure everything was perfect especially since my bf proposed out on the water! Perfect day!

My husband and I booked a 3 hour ride. The captain was so nice and accommodating the entire time. The boat was extremely clean and we'll kept. I really liked that he let us Bluetooth our phone to the speaker system and play our own music. Very professional and hospitable. We would definitely book again.

47' Leopard Sailing Catamaran on Clear Lake/Galveston Bay

We had a great time with Terry and Wayne! Terry is a professional captain, very friendly and accommodating since we arrived at the decking station. We are looking into sailing lessons with him! The ship is also great and has an interesting story behind it, book your trip with them to find out more!

Had 12 guys on a golf trip from the Philly area. We booked this boat with Terry to break up the golf a bit. This was the best experience ever. Terry and Suzie were just amazing with response time and info, communication was a breeze! The boat is freaking awesome. It's not a standard plain catamaran, it's huge. Price was fantastic, we purchased beer at the dock, Terry and crew had fridge space and cooler space for us. The crew had trash bags as well. They allowed us to connect Bluetooth music for the trip. I can't stress enough how smooth terry made the trip. We literally got on the boat and was able to enjoy immediately. Would absolutely recommend or book again.

Excellent from beginning to end ! Excellent communication, friendly and nice! Thank you so much for such a great experience and helping make a great bachelorette weekend possible ! 5 stars I will recommend using the flying pig for any future travels to Houston !

Micah

Terry and his crew were absolutely wonderful to work with from start to finish. The communication was clear while scheduling. When I had to call regarding some questions he answered immediately and was able to answer them. While sailing he was a great captain, informing us of everything we needed to know while sailing - everything from how to use the toilet with a button, to storage and using the refrigerator, to setting up and confirming we were able to connect to their speakers before we left the dock. He gave us options on where to sail to based on what we wanted to see and do. He was friendly and joked around with us when we were around, but was content to give us our space as well and never forced himself into conversations. All around pleasant and personable. I highly recommend Terry and his beautiful catamaran to anyone looking for anyone looking to get away and go sailing. It was an all around exceptional experience from start to finish.

Me and my friends(8 of us) had an amazing time. Suzie was very accommodating and her communication from day one was excellent. Terry and Wayne were friendly but not intrusive. They were the perfect balance of giving our space and helpful in letting us have fun. They even tried their best to avoid the scattered storm to ensure or trip was a pleasant as possible. We went on the float mat which was fun and Wayne even jumped in to be our photographer 📸 😁 I (we) would highly recommend using their services. 10/10 on all fonts!

Terry and Suzie love to sail, whether it’s going on an afternoon outing, a sunset cruise, watching the beautiful firework shows on Galveston Bay, or island hopping in the British Virgin Islands. They both love sailing and chartering so much they decided to open their own sailing school and yacht charter business in 2019 and share their passion with their friends.

The Best Boat Tours in Galveston

Thanks to its access to both Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston Island is a great spot to spend the day on a boat tour.

Whether it's speedy jet boat rides, peaceful kayak outings, sightseeing tours, dolphin-watching excursions , or deep-sea fishing , Galveston boat tours are available for every speed of traveler.

A boat tour on the bay makes a great outing from your Galveston vacation rental , where you can return at the end of the day to enjoy the sunset from your private deck.

This is also one of many great family experiences Galveston offers . Most are family-friendly, and some even have free or reduced prices for kids. We've included some of the best Galveston boat tours available in the local's guide below.

Colonel Paddlewheel Boat at Moody Gardens

  • Book a Tour: moodygardens.com
  • Tour Time: 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the tour.
  • Ages : All Ages

The Colonel Paddlewheel Boat is a little different from other Galveston boat tours since you'll be riding on a replica of an 1800s paddlewheel vessel. Located at Moody Gardens, the boat tour travels into the bayou and bay.

There are two different experiences you can book here. Day cruises last 45 minutes, and you can enjoy the views from shady interior spots or head to the breezy upper deck.

The paddle boat also hosts two-hour family-friendly dinner cruises with themed meals, including a Louisiana Bayou buffet, an Aloha feast, and local favorites like Tex Mex and barbecue. These sailings are quite popular and need to be booked in advance.

Jet boat thrill rides are perfect for adventure seekers, as the small and speedy vessel spins and splashes guests on a heart-pumping ride through Bay Harbor.

For something a little calmer, open-air boats will take guests on a dolphin tour focusing more on leisurely wildlife watching. In addition, the adults-only sunset tours are a perfect romantic outing for couples .

Galveston Party Boats

  • Book a Tour: galvestonpartyboatsinc.com
  • Tour Time: 4 to 12 hours, depending on the tour.

Galveston Party Boats are fishing-focused charters that head into the bay and out on the Gulf of Mexico. Unlike other deep-sea fishing charters on the island, this one charges per guest, so you don't have to rent the whole boat.

The 4-hour tour option takes guests by the bay and jetty to fish for sand trout and sharks, while longer 8- and 12-hour trips venture up to 80 miles out into the Gulf to catch king mackerel and red snapper.

The tour lasts about 4 hours and includes time to paint different scenes that inspire you on the journey, with watercolor demonstrations and supplies included. All skill levels are welcome.

Beachtown Tours

The company also runs themed outings, where you can experience things like catching crabs from the company's traps or oyster picking from reefs (November through April). You can also rent kayaks to go out on your own adventure, with route suggestions from the pros.

Sustainable yachting tips

If you’re looking to explore our beautiful planet, a Galveston boat charter is a great place to start. Explore coral reefs with your snorkel, discover hidden bays and islands and generally enjoy the view of nature. Remember, that sailing motto:  'Take only photos, leave only wake'  (OK, so we paraphrased). To be a responsible sailor, remember:

  • Don’t disturb coral or sealife
  • Take your trash home (and don’t throw anything in the sea)
  • Respect the locals and their customs wherever you go

Galveston’s geographical location gifts it a unique maritime identity. Sandwiched between the sprawling Galveston Bay and the majestic Gulf of Mexico, the city boasts diverse sailing environments, catering to both the novice sailor and the experienced mariner. As you set sail into the bay, calm waters greet you, offering a perfect setting for leisurely sailing, fishing, or simply anchoring to savor a Texan sunset. The bay is dotted with islands, marinas, and waterfront establishments, ensuring that every sailing expedition is peppered with discoveries, be it a secluded beach or a vibrant dockside eatery. For the more adventurous, the Gulf of Mexico awaits, presenting an expanse where the horizon stretches endlessly, and where the spirit of exploration is unbridled. Here, the possibility of spotting playful dolphins, majestic whales, or even engaging in deep-sea fishing amplifies the thrill of the voyage.

Yet, sailing in Galveston is not merely about navigating its waters; it’s about immersing in the city’s rich tapestry of history and culture. Galveston, with its storied past, resonates with maritime tales that span centuries. Historic harbors, lighthouses, and maritime museums dot the shoreline, each narrating tales of yesteryears. What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Galveston

In the vibrant maritime realm of Galveston, Texas, where the Gulf of Mexico’s vastness meets the tranquil embrace of Galveston Bay, the decision of vessel selection can significantly shape your sailing experience. At Yachting.Rent, we understand the nuances of sailing and aim to provide our patrons with insights that ensure their nautical adventures are not just memorable but tailored perfectly to their vision. In the heart of this endeavor is the age-old question: to opt for a sailing boat or a catamaran when exploring the waters of Galveston?

The traditional sailing boat, with its single hull and iconic silhouette, is a symbol of classic maritime elegance. As you hoist its sails and catch the Gulf winds, the boat responds with an intimate connection to the water, offering a tactile feel of the waves and currents beneath. This close communion with the sea allows sailors to truly immerse in the rhythms of the ocean. For those seeking a more authentic and hands-on sailing experience, where the art of navigation and seamanship plays a pivotal role, sailing boats are the vessels of choice. Their sleek design allows for deft maneuvers, especially when navigating through Galveston’s myriad of islands, bays, and inlets. Additionally, the deep keel of these boats provides stability, making them ideal for ventures further into the Gulf, where waters can be more unpredictable.

On the other hand, catamarans, with their twin hulls and expansive decks, offer a different kind of maritime allure. Their design inherently provides more stability, significantly reducing the rolling motion commonly experienced on monohulls. This makes catamarans an excellent choice for those who prioritize comfort or are new to the world of sailing. The wide deck space is perfect for sunbathing, social gatherings, or simply relishing the panoramic vistas of the Texan coastline. The shallow draft of catamarans also presents an advantage when exploring Galveston’s coastal regions, allowing sailors to anchor closer to beaches or navigate shallower waters with ease. Additionally, catamarans often come equipped with modern amenities, ensuring that luxury and comfort are not compromised, even in the heart of the sea.

Given the contrasting attributes of both vessels, the choice truly hinges on the kind of maritime experience one seeks in Galveston. For the purists, who yearn for the age-old dance between wind, sail, and sea, the sailing boat is a canvas that allows them to paint their nautical tales. For those seeking a blend of adventure and relaxation, where the journey is as luxurious as the destinations explored, the catamaran stands as a floating oasis of opulence and comfort.

11 Reason To Sail on Cruises From Galveston

I n no uncertain terms, a cruise port makes all the difference regarding your entire vacation. After all, the location of your departure sets the tone for your trip moving forward, determining which destinations you’ll reach once you’re on the high seas.

While specific destinations like Miami or Canaveral boast unique strengths, something might also be said for the Port of Galveston, Texas. A smaller port overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston may not be the largest or busiest destination from which to depart. Yet, there are plenty of amicable reasons to look into this idyllic Texan island for your next cruise-going experience.

1. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Disney Offer Cruises From Galveston

Looking at it plainly, Galveston has three cruise terminals making up its port. In contrast, far larger alternatives, like the Port of Miami, have eleven terminals. Because of this, Galveston unfortunately cannot house many of the industry’s prestigious cruise lines. However, the port’s terminals support several large-scale cruise corporations, with Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Norwegian, MSC, and Disney Cruises departing from Galveston regularly.

2. The Nearby Cruise Destinations Are Well Worth It

Admittedly, inevitable drawbacks are attached to cruises from Galveston. Considering how much farther west it is than ports in Florida or along the East Coast, most cruise lines out of Galveston cannot travel to their company’s private islands as many are in the Eastern Caribbean. However, Galveston’s location along the Gulf of Mexico has its distinct perks, including ready access to the Western Caribbean and parts of South and Central America. Though some guests might regret losing a chance at CocoCay, it’s hard to be upset when trekking along the shores of Mexico, Honduras, or Belize.

3. It’s Easier To Navigate Than Larger Ports

There’s no simple answer when it comes to determining the total cost of cruises from Galveston over any other port in the U.S. Like most ports, the final cost of the cruise depends on numerous factors, including the time of year you’re sailing, the location of your cabin, and the cruise line you plan on traveling with. However, the convenience of navigating the port itself makes Galveston a perfect option for anyone new to cruise vacations. Avoiding the large-scale crowds and tedious boarding lines as other major ports, Galveston remains a hassle-free destination for most novice travelers out there.

Baby, It's Cold Outside! 12 Warm Destinations to Escape to This Winter

4. galveston is conveniently located in the central u.s..

Given Galveston’s distinct location in eastern Texas , it’s one of the most readily accessible ports for travelers across the U.S. Located in the heart of America, travelers from the Western U.S. will have just as easy time reaching it as vacationers from the Midwest or East Coast. After all, who wants to sit on a lengthy plane ride to reach their port of call? Also, Galveston lacks the same high value of traffic as Miami or other popular ports, making it relatively hassle-free to reach.

5. The Port Terminal Is Reasonably Close to the Airport

Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport is the closest airport to Galveston. Roughly 41 miles northwest of the port, travelers can easily navigate from the airport to their cruise terminal in under an hour. Galveston is also close to several major cities, making it an option, albeit a farther one, for anyone flying into Austin or Dallas. However, given Houston’s short driving distance to Galveston, William P. Hobby Airport is your best bet for air travel.

6. The Boarding Process Is Quick and Seamless

As mentioned above, Galveston doesn’t have the same volume of passengers flooding through its port as Miami, Canaveral, or Port Everglades. As a result, boarding a ship is comparatively tamer—especially since the port opened up its third and latest terminal in 2022. Having been constructed in the past two decades and carefully refurbished, these terminals are in fantastic shape, making the onboarding process much more efficient for vacationers. The terminals also come equipped with innovative new features, with Terminal 3 offering mobile check-in and state-of-the-art facial recognition devices.

7. There Are Plenty of Hotels Nearby

Another notable feature of Galveston is the number of hotels near the port. (Because let’s face it: what’s more accessible than simply waking up, hopping in your car, and practically walking onto the ship without worrying about losing track of time?) What’s more, many of the hotels in the Galveston area have special offers for anyone traveling onboard a cruise ship. These offers include free or discounted parking rates and a helpful shuttle that ferry passengers back and forth from the hotel to the ship. While several hotels in Galveston have these amenities, some of the best include the Hilton Galveston Island Resort and the San Luis Resort .

8. Parking Is Easy

Don’t let Galveston’s size fool you—the port itself has plenty of options when it comes to parking. As previously suggested, anyone staying at a nearby hotel might want to consider leaving their car parked there and taking a shuttle, taxi, or Uber over to their terminal. Additionally, travelers can reserve a space in the port’s parking lot ahead of their trip. These parking spaces are safe and secure, and port employees will assist with any luggage brought aboard on cruises from Galveston.

9. Galveston Itself Is a Beautiful Place To Visit

The main reason we believe you should depart from Galveston on your next cruise is the opportunity you’ll have to see what it has to offer. Like most major cities, there’s plenty to do and see around town, with every prospective sight catering to travelers’ interests. For those interested in shopping, the Strand Historical District has plenty of independently owned stores that feature everything from odd tchotchkes to essential beach items. Galveston’s famous Moody Gardens is an educational park built around natural wonders such as exotic sea life, immaculate flowers, roaming monkeys, and sloths.

10. You’re Bound To Find Some Great Last-Minute Deals

As previously mentioned, Galveston is a more scaled-down port than Miami or Port Canaveral, but its three terminals still receive cruise ships constantly. Because of this constantly moving schedule, most travelers will find it incredibly easy to find last-minute deals on select cruises from Galveston—often days before the ship is booked to leave. Sure, it may not be practical for those traveling from longer distances to book something last-minute. Yet these last-minute deals are well worth it for anyone within a short distance of Galveston.

11. Galveston Is Steeped in Rich Maritime History

Galveston is a city rich in history, having first been settled by Indigenous Natives of the Akokisa and Karankawa tribes before the Europeans arrived in the 1600s. Over the next several centuries, Galveston became a hub for maritime trade, eventually attracting such notable figures as French buccaneer Jean Lafitte. All that being said, history buffs will delight at the chance to visit Galveston, taking in some of the numerous historical sights around town—like Lafitte’s personal hideaway at Maison Rouge or the Michael B. Menard House, named after one of Galveston’s original American settlers. Even those who don’t care for history will find these areas fascinating.
