Hi there, I am looking for resistance prediction methods/series for catamarans around 10 m lenght, 6 ton displacement and 10 knots of speed (Froude number around 0.52). Any recommendations? Thanks

We use following methods: - Molland series - see link from AdHoc, for round bilge shapes - Muller-Graf series - for semi-planing catamarans with chine - Savitsky planing method with hulls interaction factor - for planing catamarans - For narrow and light hulls, there is 'slender hull' method, this is originally a graph published by Doubrovsky in his book. However use with care, as comparing with tank tests seems the method underpredicts the resistance.

10 knots on a 10m powercat is only just over the hump speed. So it would be best to either aim for displacement speeds of under 8 knots or go for mid teens as a minimum speed. see here for an example of one of my home built designs in that size range Richard Woods of Woods Designs www.sailingcatamarans.com

I did a similar investigation for a sailing catamaran, see the document attached to the quote#51 and the comments around. Calculating friction resistance, drag coefficient? https://www.boatdesign.net/threads/calculating-friction-resistance-drag-coefficient.62553/page-4

Hi. I have found this calculator gives not unreasonable results for the power and cat specs I am interested in, but my interest is small motors on sailing cats. Free to use Propeller Sizing Calculators https://www.vicprop.com/free-propeller-sizing-calculators It predicts about 5 knots from 4hp on a 32' cat weighing 5300 lbs. Interestingly it predicts only 5,5 for a 6hp. When I input beam I double the hull beam to account for both. I would be very interested if anyone knows of a better calculator for speed predictions for displacement situations.

Ok, fine, just to mention a typo mistake in my User Guide, it is : Cms : midship section coefficient (section / Tc Bw) , and not of course .... (section / Lw Bw). (This coeff Cms is used in the Holtrop / coeff c5 formula)

A displacement trimaran has several resistance components. The breakdown of these resistance components were experimentally studied by, the towing tank method. In addition, the phenomenon was also numerically studied by applying computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A typical trimaran model comprises of one main hull, which is 1.2-m long, and two symmetric side hulls, which are about 0.5-m long. The model was tested at various configurations, between Froude numbers 0.15 and 0.27, as well as at various lateral spacings (S/L) between 0.2 and 0.5. Experimentally, the model was examined with an ITS towing tank. For the CFD investigation, ANSYS-CFX was used, which is a commercial code. Each part of the trimaran hulls were tested, both experimentally and numerically. Such an individual examination, helped to elucidate on the interference phenomena between the hulls. A clear observation was noted using these methods. However, both methods helped to arrive at the same conclusion. The results demonstrated that, the wider the hull separation, the smaller the interference between the hulls. Furthermore, the wide separation (S/L=0.5) was an indication for 'no interference' between the hulls. This can be so assumed because, the overall result was comparably similar with the individual test of each hull, when interference was neglected, analyzing the obtained data comparatively with published data, which also suggests similar conclusions.

The present study focuses on the hydrodynamic hull form optimization of a zero emission, battery driven, fast catamaran vessel. A two-stage optimization procedure was implemented to identify in the first stage (global optimization) the optimum combination of a ship’s main dimensions and later on in the second stage (local optimization) the optimal ship hull form, minimizing the required propulsion power for the set operational specifications and design constraints. Numerical results of speed-power performance for a prototype catamaran, intended for operation in the Stavanger area (Norway), were verified by model experiments at Hamburgische Schiffbau Versuchsanstalt (HSVA), proving the feasibility of this innovative, zero emissions, waterborne urban transportation concept.

— An investigation into the breakdown of resistance components of a displacement trimaran was carried out experimentally using a towing tank. A trimaran model consisting of one main-hull with length of 1.2m and two symmetric side-hulls with length of 0.5m was tested at various configurations between Froude numbers of 0.15 and 0.27 at various lateral spacing (S/L) between 0.2 and 0.5. The experimental investigation was conducted using a towing tank belongs to Institute of Technology Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) at Surabaya. Individual test on each part of trimaran hull was also carried out in order to clarify the interference phenomena between the hulls more clearly. Overall results indicated that the wider the hull separation, the smaller the interference between the hulls. The widest separation (S/L=0.5) indicated that there is nointerference between the hulls and this is in good agremeent with individual test of each hull when interference is neglected.
