Exceptional design and performance

The magnificent 43.6-metre Svea is the latest and greatest in the line of new yachts built as part of the rebirth of the legendary J-Class yachts. As a ‘super J’ at the upper end of the specifications of the Universal Rule, Svea is an imposing yacht in her own right. The Vitters craftsmen and engineers incorporated a wealth of modern elements and construction methods to create an exceptionally advanced sailing yacht.

Nine Js and counting: J Class Svea J-S1 is sold and under construction at Vitters

  • Toby Hodges
  • December 1, 2015

News that Vitters Shipyard is fitting out the J Class Svea, takes the tally of formidable Js to nine. It also gives hope of seeing the biggest collection of J Class ever at the Bermuda America’s Cup event in 2017 – and perhaps six or more racing together for the first time!

J Class Svea sailplan

Vitters Shipyard has announced that it is fitting out its first J Class yacht. The brand new 43.60m aluminum hull of the J Class Svea is the longest of the current fleet.

Svea is based on an original Tore Holm design from 1937, and is one of the most stunning Js yet to be built. It has since been reconfigured and styled by Hoek Design’s J supremo Andre Hoek.

The news comes at a time of resurgence in interest in the J Class in the build up to the showcase regatta that will form part of the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017 .

And it follows soon after the launch of J8 Topaz from Holland Jachtbouw in June . Indeed it is hoped that Vitters will be able to complete the work in time for Svea to make the Bermuda regatta.

Can you imagine seeing six or more Js racing together? It could steal a hefty dose of thunder from the flying catamarans – but is equally a shrewd ‘foil’ to ensure all sailing enthusiasts tune into the event.

J Class Svea at Vitters

Ever since visiting the hull in its early months of initial construction at Bloemsma Aluminiumbouw in early 2014, I have been silently hoping this project finds a willing owner. Even then the bare aluminium plating alone looked awesome.

Svea’s hull construction is based on longitudinals on web frames, with high tensile frames and Alustar hull plating. Today’s news confirms that Svea has found a new owner and that Vitters Shipyard will start with the fit out and systems shortly.

The Zwartsluis based yard is unfazed by big projects. It built the largest ketch in the world – the 85m Tripp design that launched last year – one of the largest sloops (66m Aglaia), and it refitted the 67m ketch Hetairos this year.

That Vitters uses a very efficient sub contractor model, fuels hope that the J Class Svea can be fitted out and launched in time for the Bermuda event. Few yards in the world are capable of completing a project of this size on this timescale.

Research by the Hoek Design office suggests that the design of J-S1 will be very capable, especially upwind. Swedish designer, sailor and boatbuilder Tore Holm was an expert in Metre racing yachts between 1920s and 1950s. He built 700 boats, won four Olympic medals himself, while five medals were won by boats he designed.

Svea’s interior will be designed by Pieter Beeldsnijder Designers & Naval Architects, and will have traditional styling in line with the overall character of the yacht. The client’s brief called for a change in the original deck arrangement, to accommodate the equipment used in modern J-Class racing.

When she launches, the J Class Svea will join the impressive current fleet of J Class yachts sailing: Shamrock V, Endeavour, Velsheda (all originals), plus Ranger, Hanuman, Lionheart (pictured below), Rainbow and Topaz.

The J Class Svea project has been developed in close cooperation with Claasen Shipyards and Hoek Design and will be finished at Vitters Shipyard.
We will be following it here keenly!

J Class Svea set to return to race in Europe with Swedish Syndicate

nauticanews

A group of successful Swedish entrepreneurs and businessmen who are all passionate about sailing, will campaign JS1 Svea and plan to start racing this summer in Europe with a mostly Swedish crew.

Svea is under new ownership and due to be shipped from Charleston, USA to arrive in Palma in May where the new team will prepare the boat in time for June’s Palma Superyacht Cup where she is set to line up against Velsheda, Ranger and Topaz.

When Svea, JS1, became available the syndicate of Swedish sailors Niklas Zennström, Filip Engelbert and Hjalmar Winbladh, decided to collaborate together to have the Tore Holm design return to her Swedish roots and to race finally under the national flag.

She was launched in January 2017 and was initially raced in Bermuda and at the J Class World Championships in Newport RI. She is the largest J Class yacht ever and was built from original designs drawn by Swedish naval architect and boat builder Tore Holm, well known as a noted designer of Six and Eight Metre yachts.

The 1937 drawings were unearthed from a drawer by a well-known Dutch Metre class aficionado and after analysis, her potential was immediately evident.

The intention of the new syndicate is to have a crew which is largely Swedish. But J Class experience is vital and so the crew will be led by eight-times round the world racer Bouwe Bekking, who won the J Class World Championship with Lionheart. Magnus Woxen is helping put together the crew, but it will certainly include Bekking’s long-time collaborator Jens Dolmer and Zennström’s regular navigator Steve Hayles as well as project manager Tim Powell.

“When Svea became available it was seen to be an opportunity which was too good to be missed. There is a natural connection for all of the syndicate who wanted to have Svea race in Swedish colours,” project manager Tim Powell enthuses.

“Now we are all looking forward to going sailing for the first time,” Powell adds. “We are very much of the view that the learning curve will be steep to start with and it will take time to get the team fully up to speed with 30 or so on board and all the jobs so interlinked it is a very specific learning programme.”

The team plan an extended training period just before Superyacht Cup Palma and thereafter plan to race at the Rolex Maxi Yacht Cup in Sardinia in September.

On board the new J-class yacht Svea

Svea, the newest addition to the J Class fleet, is considered one of the most outstanding yachts of our time, embodying the harmony of classic and modern design, a combination of J-Class design lines and Maxi Grand Prix yacht technology.

The idea for this super-J model belongs to a Swedish yachtsman and shipbuilder.  Tore Hill but the yacht was never built in 1937. Hill's blueprints were eventually discovered by a yachting historian.  John Lammert  van Beuren, and now this amazing model, the longest modern  J-class yacht , 143 ft (43.6 m), taking shape at the shipyard  Vitters shipyard  for her American owner.

On board the new J-class yacht Svea

Danish yacht architect  Andre Hoek  adapted the blueprints and designs to make the boat competitive for modern racing. Creation program  Svea  was ruthless since its owner purchased an empty aluminum case just two years ago. The owner of the yacht, being an experienced yachtsman, has firmly set his eyes on the yacht regatta  J-class  on  Bermuda.

In March, on  Saint Barth , for the first time six yachts  J-class  walked together, but when  Svea  will join them in Bermuda, this will be the first time a fleet of seven will line up. And for this to happen,  Svea  had to take shape in no time.

Only 17 months have passed since the signing of the contract for her delivery - and now the superyacht is already prepared to sail across the Atlantic to the start of her first race.   Svea  arrived in Palma in March to begin water trials and prepare for the race.

All J-class yachts are mesmerizing on the water, but Svea just stops you on your way.  Her lines and deck remain impressively clean thanks to her compact equipment. Its dark metallic gray hull and black and red sails give it a menacing and purposeful look that belies the luxurious interior on the inside.

Deck layout optimized  for modern racing, thanks to the large cockpit directly in front of the helm, from where the main control takes place. This means that the crew is not on the aft deck and can safely operate the winches in a standing position.  Architect Andre Hoek  was encouraged by the overly wide, submerged helm because it allowed the helmsman to remain in close contact with the crew. The engine room is particularly well thought out, allowing easy access to all systems.

Overall, we managed to maximize the accommodation space.  The cabins are full of light, a compact galley, separate crew accommodation, guest cabins and the master cabin aft. The cockpit also doubles as a cruising guest area, and has removable seats and a table. Raised and pull-out panels act as decorative and practical functions at the same time, as well as curved handrails integrated into the panels. These all reflect the owner's taste for joinery carpentry. Intricate design details and complex, complex building skills are especially impressive when you consider the time frame in which it was completed.  Svea .

Yachting is the perfect pastime! It is a lot of fun, although it does require some skill and dexterity, and can have the added benefit of training and fitness level. It is also an active holiday that puts safety at the forefront, and one way to achieve this is to know the various knots of the sea.

The new J Class Yacht Svea was launched in January 2017 to an original hull linesplan of Thore Holm made in 1937. Fast forward, this spectacular new J took 80 years to finally touch the water and is one of the most promising new J-Class Yachts built to date. Svea is by many regarded as one of the most beautiful J’s and potentially one of the fastest one’s. Hoek Design redesigned her linesplan, did all exterior styling, naval architecture work and performance optimization. Her construction, decklayout and sailplan were optimized for racing, incorporating many new features. The interior design was done by the late Pieter Beeldsnijder in cooperation with Hoek Design. Interior decoration was done by deVosdeVries. She was built at Vitters Shipyards with help from Claasen Shipyards who initially started the project. Hull construction was by Bloemsma in the Netherlands who previously built three other aluminium J Class hulls. Van Ineveld & Co acted as owners representatives.

Svea Found at Fault in J-Class Collision with Topaz

A decision has been reached on the cause of the shocking collision between J Class sailing yachts  Svea  and  Topaz  during the Superyacht Challenge Antigua earlier this month.

The 43.6 metre Svea was captured riding over the stern of the 42.6 metre Topaz , resulting in the injury of three crew members.

A hearing report released by the J Class Association on the incident found  Svea responsible for the collision for failing to keep clear as the port tack boat. It also concluded that it was deemed impossible for Topaz to avoid the collision.

The incident occurred shortly before the first race on March 12, with  Topaz  approaching the starting line around one minute and 40 seconds ahead of the start of the race.

Svea , on port, was on course to collide with  Topaz  and attempted to bear away at the last moment. Despite  Topaz  luffing to avoid the crash,  Svea  collided with the port side of  Topaz , causing serious damage in the process.

Topaz’s  boom, back stays and mainsheet were broken while the port runner was torn off. The mast was put under “extreme load” according to the report, and will undergo further inspection.

Two crew members on board  Topaz  were thrown from the boat, including one who suffered four broken ribs when he was pushed overboard by the bow of  Svea . A crew member on board  Svea  was also pulled from the boat by the runner tail of  Topaz .

Following the collision, both yachts immediately retired from the race and the Superyacht Challenge Antigua. Dramatic footage of the collision was captured on board fellow J Class yacht  Velsheda .

Both  Topaz  and  Svea  are race veterans and have competed against each other in a number of international sailing regattas, including the St Barths Bucket and the Superyacht Cup Palma.

Built by Vitters,  Svea  was launched in 2017 making her the newest member of the J Class fleet.  Topaz  is also a modern J Class, and is based on an unbuilt 1935 Frank Paine design.  Topaz  was delivered by Holland Jachtbouw in 2015.

Svea’s winning streak extended

Svea’s winning streak extended

As the J Class returned to windward leeward courses at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo today, two further race wins for the Swedish flagged Svea means the team are well set to collect the top award for the three-boat class at Saturday’s prizegiving at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Racing in a sparkling 12-16kts of NNE’ly breeze with a bumpy sea state, the well drilled Velsheda crew did make Svea work especially hard for their second win of the day, but the team led by tactician Bouwe Bekking still remain unbeaten after five races, all of them sailed in great conditions.

With an expectation that the breeze would diminish in the afternoon, racing was brought forwards an hour to capitalize on the perfect winds. And while Svea again won the day, the other honours were shared between Velsheda and Topaz.

After a bitterly disappointing Tuesday when they tore two spinnakers in succession on the same awkward downwind, Topaz bounced back to a much better day. Notably they won both starts with strong positioning and pin sharp timing.

Typically in a three boat fleet opportunities knock when two boats pair up. On the first race Topaz let Svea away as they engaged Velsheda, whilst on the second race it was Velsheda which escaped, sailing high and fast on the first brisk upwind while Topaz held Svea out towards the left of the first beat.

Svea extended on the first race to win by 1 minute and 11 seconds on corrected time from Topaz. But although Velsheda crossed the line first after leading at every mark and sailing a very tidy race, they were left in second on corrected time, a tantalizing 21 seconds behind Svea.

Velsheda’s mainsheet trimmer Don Cowie was disappointed not to have saved their time against Svea after taking their second winning gun of the week, but he is loving the thrilling J Class racing. “The second race we sailed really well, Ronald (Velsheda’s owner) did a really nice job steering in these waves as they are difficult boats to sail. But it is pretty tough for us as we sailed a nice race, got some good shifts, good hoists, gybes, drops… We sailed well but we just can’t seem to win on handicap. It is very difficult.”

He continued, “Today we are just taking the cup for line honors!  But the racing is just fantastic. But this is a difficult place to race J Class yachts because of the sea state, although the racing has been fantastic. We have had some great sailing. It is good fun. These boats are kind of dangerous and so you need to be surrounded by a good bunch of guys who really know what they are doing. And this boat is 90 years old. I am sailing around in a boat that was racing 90 years ago and I love that!”

Svea’s project manager and mainsheet trimmer Tim Powell is delighted the hard work and effort put in by their team is paying off. After five races and with two still to sail, their lead is seven points. “ We are super excited about today,” said Powell, “Everything is just working really well and the crew are doing fantastic work.”

He recalled, “ First race we got our noses ahead when Topaz and Velsheda were having a little battle between themselves and that was relatively good, and the second one we did not have a great start but we managed to battle past Topaz. At two thirds of the way up the beat we managed to squeeze them off which gave us some breathing room. The thing is the boat is going well, we are sailing the boat well, we have a great crew, Bouwe is making good calls. When things are going your way, they go your way.”

And Peter Holmberg, helm on Topaz was happy with the progress they are making. “Yesterday was a very hard day for everybody but we made a real mission out of sailing really well and we did that. We had good starts today and I had a lot of help from our bowman and navigator, these guys on these big boats really helpful. I feel like we have a good rhythm going in the starts and nailed two of them and we were going as well as we could upwind. We are very happy with everything but just not enough to get our competitors.”

Thursday is the lay day for all classes at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, with racing resuming Friday and before Saturday’s final day.

Svea sailed fast and smart to lead at every mark to win Race 1, despite Velsheda having the best start and crossing Svea initially. The newest J Class in the fleet – which is racing at a lighter displacement than last year – was able to set up to windward of Velsheda and was visibly quicker and able to slightly lift away.At the top mark they were a boat length and a half clear of Velsheda with Topaz the same distance behind in third. The two chasing boats gybe set or gybed early and downwind they were able to gain back slightly on leader Svea which had their spinnaker sheet under the jib and could not respond immediately. The breeze picked up slightly on the second round and Svea extended away to win by nearly two minutes on the water which corrected to victory by 1 minute and 26 seconds over Topaz which crossed third through the finish line. The second start was won by Topaz, America’s Cup and match racing ace Peter Holmberg showing a deft touch, but whilst Svea and Topaz were drag racing upwind, Velsheda hooked into a nice windshift out to the far left. Coming into the turn on port tack, they were able to round just ahead of Svea and Topaz.Flying a symmetrical spinnaker, Velsheda gained a few metres on the gybes and made a very tidy mark rounding through the leeward gate. In the 15-16kts wind they extended upwind but by the finish still needed another 30 seconds more of an advantage to beat Svea on corrected time. And so, while Svea lead with their two well-earned wins today, Topaz and Velsheda both scored a second and third apiece. On the first race Topaz took second place by only eight seconds ahead of Velsheda.

svea j class yacht

The sleek, black hulled Tore Holm design may have proven unbeatable today but Tuesday is forecast to see winds well over 20kts which should mean an exciting, demanding coastal race into the La Maddalena gulf – or bomb alley as it is better known.

Svea’s tactician Bouwe Bekking was happy with their day, recalling, “We were going well downwind and we have done quite a bit of work on our spinnakers and that’s made a difference. The second race was full on. Velsheda has the heels on us in that breeze. You can see she is more upright, stiffer.”

Considering this was the first day this year that the three boats have lined up against each other, the standard was generally very high. The starts showed just the right mix of being prudently conservative – as required on these giant, powerful machines – finding the perfect time on distance and some that just missed just mark by a few seconds here and there.

Bekking recalled their second start, “We pulled the trigger just a little too late on the start. We could have gone up on the Topaz guys, we had the opportunity, but you just don’t go there on these boats. We all have to be careful.”

Velsheda’s tactician Tom Dodson was happy to have outperformed Svea on the second race, but was left wondering what more they could have done to win: “I don’t think we could have done much more against them. We got a good shift out on the left, we were happy over there and could see the maxis getting left shifts at the top of the beat and the other two boats overlaid and that brought us more into the game. We got some good help from our guys at the back of the boat to sneak round ahead of Svea. It is never easy to come in on port at the last minute. You get to a point with these boats where you can’t dip but Grant Simmer and Ronald were confident, and we were good. We did not really know what the timings are. At this stage in the regatta we are just trying to go as fast as we can.”

Peter Holmberg, helmsman on Topaz, was very happy with the changes they have made, adding some new sails, new trimmers and bringing in Andy Horton for this regatta as tactician. Of their starting strategy he explained, “We feel a little vulnerable in our turning ability, so we have a particular style that keeps it reasonable. The second start we got out of there OK, our first start was ‘off’. We still achieved OK from ordinary starts. The positives are that the boat is fast enough as this is the first time we have lined up this year since all the changes everyone has made.”

FEIG ELECTRONIC: Moscow-City Skyscrapers Streamline Parking Access and Control with Secure RFID

Feig electronic partners with isbc group to deploy ucode dna rfid security and parking access control solution in moscow business district.

Weilburg, Germany  — December 3,  2019  —  FEIG ELECTRONIC , a leading global supplier of radio frequency identification (RFID) readers and antennas with fifty years of industry experience, announces deployment of the UCODE DNA RFID security and parking contactless identification solution in the Moscow International Business Center, known as Moscow-City, one of the world’s largest business district projects.

The management of Moscow-City not only selected long-range, passive UHF RFID to implement in its controlled parking areas, it also chose to implement UCODE DNA , the highest form of secure RAIN RFID technology, developed by NXP Semiconductors.

“Underscoring NXP’s innovation and leadership in developing advanced RAIN RFID technologies, our UCODE DNA was chosen to be incorporated with the FEIG and ISBC implementation of the contactless identification system in the prestigious Moscow-City,” said Mahdi Mekic, marketing director for RAIN RFID with NXP Semiconductors. “This exciting project represents yet another successful deployment of NXP’s contactless portfolio, and showcases our continued ability to meet the high-security requirements of highly demanding applications without compromising user convenience.”

“UCODE DNA is considered the only identification technology to match the physical protection of a barrier with the cybersecurity necessary to truly protect entrances from unauthorized access,” said Manuel Haertlé, senior product manager for FEIG Electronic. “As a respected contactless payment technology company, FEIG applies security know-how from its payment terminals, which are fully certified according to the latest high-class security standards, into our RFID systems. FEIG vehicle access control RFID readers incorporate advanced secure key storage elements, supporting various methods for secure key injection.”

FEIG’s partner ISBC Group provided the knowledge and support for this successful implementation using  FEIG’s long-range UHF RFID . The resulting system enables authorized vehicle entry into areas reserved for private residential use or corporate tenants, while also allowing availability of temporary, fee-based visitor parking. Thanks to the cryptographic authentication of UCODE DNA, both the tag and reader must go through an authentication procedure before the reader will validate the data from the tag, which is transmitted wirelessly. This level of authentication is typically used in the most secure data communication networks.

“The system’s two-step authentication means that only authorized equipment can handle the secure protocol and the data exchange with the UCODE DNA based tag. Without the required cryptographic secrets, other readers would query the tag in vain, because the tag’s response cannot be interpreted or understood,” said Andrey Krasovskiy, director of the RFID department at ISBC Group. “On top of this, each data exchange in the authentication process is unique, so even if a malicious actor were to intercept the communication, the transmission is only good for a single exchange and the tag’s unique identity is protected from cloning.”

Established in 1992 and still growing, Moscow-City is the revitalization and transformation of an industrial riverfront into a new, modern, vibrant and upscale business and residential district. A mix of residential, hotel, office, retail and entertainment facilities, it is located about four kilometers west of Red Square along the Moscow River. Twelve of the twenty-three planned facilities have already been completed, with seven currently under construction. Six skyscrapers in Moscow-City reach a height of at least 300 meters, including Europe’s tallest building, Federation Tower, which rises more than 100 stories.

Partnering with ISBC and deploying FEIG Electronic RFID solutions, the Moscow International Business Center is delivering security and access control to its city center today, as it grows into the city of tomorrow.
