Alaskan Smoked Salmon Dip Recipe

Alaskan smoked salmon dip.

Seafood skeptics, do not turn away when you hear the words Smoked Salmon Dip !  If you do, you’ll only be disappointed that you didn’t give this delectable dish a try.

alaska-smoked-salmon-dip

It’s not a big secret that fresh salmon is a pretty big deal in Alaska.  And smoked salmon follows as a close second because it’s a common way to preserve this rich, delicious fish.

Naturally, many people have their favorite versions of Alaskan Smoked Salmon Dip.  In fact, last year at work we had a “dip off”.

I didn’t enter, but tried probably 15 dips.  Each had it’s own original twist, but something was missing.  So I’ve been playing around, developing my take on a simple smoked salmon dip recipe.

smoked-salmon-dip-ingredients

When I do recipe posts, if I’m not passing down a family tradition, I don’t just like to just post someone else’s recipe verbatim.  Jeff and I always try to put our own spin on it or in this case, create an original recipe.

So, we took the flavors we like with cooked salmon and ideas from other dips I’ve tasted, then put them into a recipe that’s very easy to make.  The core ingredients consist of:

  • Flaked Smoked Salmon (not a huge fan of salmon mousse like dips, so I leave mine chunky).
  • Cream Cheese and Capers, a nod to the flavors of a Lox and cream cheese bagel.
  • Lemon Juice and Dill marry well together with baked salmon, and it’s no different in a dip.
  • Garlic, Worcestershire Sauce, Salt and Pepper add punch and balance to the flavor.

We taste tested it Thanksgiving, 2016 , and it was pretty much to die for if I do say so myself.  Not overly fishy, but full of flavor, and creamy.  My only other tip…use good quality smoked salmon.

*Can’t quite convince you to try some seafood, then check out this recipe for  Artichoke Dip.

Alaska Smoked Salmon Dip

Ingredients

For the dip.

  • 8-12 oz. Smoked Salmon
  • 1-8 oz. package Cream Cheese
  • 1/2 c. Mayonaise
  • 1/2 c. Sour Cream
  • 1 Tbsp. Lemon Juice or juice of 1/2 Lemon
  • 4-6 sprigs Fresh Dill minced
  • 2 Tbsp. Capers
  • 1 1/2 tsp. or 1 small clove Garlic minced
  • 1 Tbsp chopped Green Onion
  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire Sauce
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Instructions

Mix the dip:.

  • Soften cream cheese, then blend together with mayonnaise and/or sour cream until smooth.
  • Flake fillet of smoked salmon.
  • Add lemon juice, dill, capers, garlic, green onions, Worcestershire sauce and flaked salmon to cream cheese mixture.
  • Mix well.  (For a smoother dip, pulse in food processor to desired consistency.)
  • Add salt and pepper to taste.
  • Allow to chill for at least an hour, (longer for better flavor) then serve it up with your favorite crackers, vegetables, or bread product and enjoy!
  • Amount of Salmon depends on how much YOU like Salmon.
  • Healthy Substitutions: low or non fat mayo or sour cream, low or non fat cream cheese.  And/or use 1/2 amount of mayo and sour cream called for.
  • **Want to add your own twist?  Other ingredients to try in addition to or in place of above are scallions, diced green chilis, jalapeno, Tabasco sauce, bacon, and baby shrimp.

It looks really delicious. I have to try it. Thanks for this recipe.

Thank you! It is now one of my favorite recipes, and more than just a little addicting:)

This is so good! Thanks for the recipe!

You’re welcome and I hope you enjoy it!

This recipe looks fantastic. I have one simple question — do you use ‘hot’ smoked salmon or cold smoked salmon? I want to be true to the recipe and appreciate your help. ( Didn’t rate because I don’t think that’s fair until I can evaluate the result fairly )

I actually prefer a bit more flakiness in my salmon dip so we use the ‘Hot’ smoked method for smoking the salmon. If you prefer more of a mousse texture, then the creamier flesh of the ‘Cold’ smoked method may work better. Give it a try, and let me know what you think!

*For readers, the “Hot and Cold” refer to the way the salmon was smoked, not the actual temperature of the fish when added:)

thanks for this! years ago my family made a dip from a recipe on the back of a package of salmon and forgot to save it. we’ve been looking for a good version ever since, and this was it!

You’re welcome! It is delicious

Have you ever tried heating this dip? Curious how it would turn out.

I haven’t heated it yet, it may pop the capers but my guess is it would be tasty!

3 Reasons we love this smoked salmon dip

  • This dip is almost too delicious, thanks to smoked salmon, fresh lemon, and herbs. It’s nearly impossible to stop going in for more.
  • It’s perfect with chips, crackers, sliced bread, and bagels. Serve as an appetizer or for brunch with bagels.
  • You can make it ahead of time! This dip made with salmon and cream cheese keeps in the fridge for 3 to 4 days.

We both love this recipe for smoked salmon dip. It’s straightforward to put together and lasts for a few days in the fridge, making it perfect for preparing ahead of time. Serve this in the evening as a dip or in the morning as a spread for toast or bagels.

Key ingredients for salmon dip

The base of our easy dip is made with softened cream cheese , sour cream , and mayonnaise . These make our dip outrageously creamy and delicious. I like setting my cream cheese out beforehand so it warms up a bit before making the dip. Also, if we have it, homemade mayonnaise takes this to a new level.

We use smoked salmon. We have used hot smoked salmon in our video and love how it adds a smoky flavor to our dip. If you are sensitive to smoky flavors, you can use a 50-50 blend of hot smoked salmon and cold smoked salmon (or use cured salmon like gravlax). You can also skip the hot smoked salmon altogether and only use cold smoked or cured salmon.

What’s the difference between hot smoked salmon and cold smoked salmon?

Hot smoked salmon has a firm, flaky texture and a strong, smoky flavor . It is cured in salt brine and then smoked at a high temperature for several hours. It is often sold in fillets. We use hot smoked salmon to make the dip in our recipe video.

Cold smoked salmon has a silky, smooth texture and a mild, delicate flavor. It is cured in salt for several days and then smoked at a low temperature for a few hours. Lox or gravlax is cured only, not smoked.

The flavor of the dip is completely up to you. Use hot smoked, cold smoked, or cured salmon in our salmon dip recipe below:

  • Hot smoked salmon dip : Hugely flavorful with a delicious smoky taste. The smoke is balanced against the creamy dip, fresh lemon, and herbs. If you love hot smoked salmon, like we do, this is your option!
  • Cold smoked salmon or cured salmon dip : Milder in flavor and more smooth and creamy.
  • A blend of the two: Blending hot smoked and cold smoked salmon is also an option, which will reduce the smokiness, without getting rid of it altogether.

Recipe overview. How to make the best smoked salmon dip in 3 easy steps

  • Beat cream cheese until soft and creamy. Then mix in sour cream, mayo, and fresh ingredients like shallot and lemon juice.
  • Flake in the salmon and mix until combined.
  • Fold in fresh chives and dill, and then serve!

Smoked salmon dip

How long does salmon dip last in the fridge?

Our smoked salmon dip will last up to 4 days in the fridge. We recommend storing it in an airtight container. Stir the dip well before serving, and consider letting it sit out for 20 minutes to warm up so it is dippable and spreadable.

Can you freeze salmon dip?

We do not recommend freezing salmon dip. While the dip is safe to freeze and eat after thawing, the texture of our dip will be different and likely separated.

Easy smoked salmon dip with chips

Smoked Salmon Dip (Quick & Easy)

  • PREP 10mins
  • TOTAL 10mins

Our amazing smoked salmon dip is lovely served with thick kettle chips, crackers, sliced bread, and spread onto bagels.

Use hot smoked salmon, as we do in the video, for the most flavorful, smoky dip. To tone down the smoked flavor, use a 50-50 blend of hot smoked and cold smoked salmon (or use cured salmon like gravlax). Or, for a more mild, creamy dip, use all cold smoked salmon (or cured salmon) in the recipe. If you use cold smoked or cured salmon, finely chop the salmon into tiny bits before mixing into the dip.

Use a stand mixer or large mixing bowl with an electric hand mixer for the most creamy and whipped texture.

Watch Us Make the Recipe

You will need.

8 ounces hot smoked salmon

1 cup (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened, see notes

1/2 cup (120 grams) sour cream

1/2 cup (120 grams) mayonnaise, try homemade mayo

Heaped tablespoon minced shallot, from half a small shallot

1 ½ teaspoons fresh lemon juice

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce or Pickapeppa sauce

5 twists fresh ground black pepper

1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt

2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives, plus more for garnish

1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh dill, plus more for garnish

1 In a stand mixer or a large mixing bowl with an electric hand mixer, beat cream cheese on medium-low speed until creamy, 30 seconds to 1 minute.

2 Scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl, then add the sour cream, mayonnaise, shallots, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, and salt. Mix on low speed until blended.

3 Flake in the salmon (do not use the skin). Mix on low speed until blended. If using cold smoked or cured salmon, finely chop the salmon before adding to the dip.

4 Scrape the bowl’s sides and bottom, then scatter over the chives and dill. Mix in on the lowest speed so the herbs don’t bruise. Remove from the mixer and serve with a few extra herbs sprinkled on top.

5 We love this salmon dip served immediately, but it is even better after a night in the refrigerator. This salmon dip keeps in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Adam and Joanne's Tips

  • Hot smoked salmon vs. cold smoked salmon: Hot smoked salmon is smoked at a high temperature, while cold smoked salmon is cured in salt for several days. Hot smoked salmon has a firm and flaky texture and is usually sold in 4 to 8 ounces fillets. On the other hand, cold smoked salmon has a silky and delicate texture and is sold sliced, similar to gravlax.
  • Softened cream cheese: For best results, use room-temperature cream cheese to ensure it mixes well.
  • Nutrition facts: The nutrition facts provided below are estimates. We have used the USDA database to calculate approximate values.

This was really good! I was looking for a way to use up the hot smoked salmon I had from Costco so this recipe was perfect. We ate the dip with everything bagel chips and enjoyed every bite. Thank you for the recipe!

Yay! So glad you enjoyed the dip. We really appreciate you taking the time to come back and leave a review 🙂

We love smoked salmon dip and have made it over many years (we only use wild salmon.) Today, you changed us forever. Your dip is creamy and so delicious — mine was on the dry side but still delicious. From now on, your recipe takes first place in our kitchen. It was absolutely delicious. We’re going for your crab dip next. My husband, a Marylander who thrives on fish asked what I did to our dip. I said it was Joanne and Adams fault! He looked puzzled and said let’s just keep making this one….it’s a keeper. Thank you for your wonderful website…we love it and make a lot of your scrumptious dishes. Thank you for all you’re hard work in making these videos for everybody.

What a nice thing to say. We are so glad you loved the recipe. Both Joanne and I grew up in Maryland. Small world 🙂

I’m not familiar with making dishes using salmon but does the salmon need to be cooked first? This looks delicious and can’t wait to try it. Thank you

Hi Patti, you are going to love this recipe because we call for smoked salmon which is fully cooked and should be available at your local grocery store. It comes together in minutes and doesn’t require cooking 🙂

alaska smoked salmon dip

alaska smoked salmon dip

Continuing my series “the United Plates of America,” next up is Alaska with this Alaska smoked salmon dip! The first thing that comes to mind when I think about Alaska is fish. Fish fish fish. So, this smoked salmon dip felt perfect! It is easy to make and is creamy and delicious.

My dad and brothers go up to Alaska most summers to go fishing, and come back with pounds and pounds of alaskan salmon and halibut! I could never last a week straight of just fishing, but I am happy to share their spoils. Having a freezer packed with high quality salmon and halibut (that lasts almost a full year) makes me a happy gal. We love to hot smoke a lot of it, so we always have a stash of smoked salmon as well! Unfortunately, Connor and I don’t live by our families anymore, so I no longer have a constant stash. But, there are many options of smoked salmon you can buy at the grocery store!

For this dip, we need to use hot smoked salmon. Cold smoked salmon will not work for this dip. Hot smoked salmon has the texture of normal cooked salmon, but obviously has a strong, smokey flavor. We need the salmon to flake so we can mix it with the other ingredients, which is why hot smoked salmon is a must.

what is in this Alaska smoked salmon dip?

  • hot smoked salmon
  • cream cheese
  • lemon juice
  • salt & pepper

Other than the smoked salmon, these are all common ingredients that you probably already have at home!

Now to talk about what to serve this dip with. Like any good dip, this dip is great with crackers, bread, and vegetables. My favorite thing to eat it on is crackers, they have such a good crunch that pairs perfectly with the dip.

Best Smoked Salmon Dip Recipe

Trust me when I say, this is the BEST smoked salmon dip recipe! One bite and I’m sure you’ll understand. Creamy and bright cream cheese is whipped together (you should also try my whipped lemon feta dip !) and then combined with fresh dill, red onion, and plenty of smoked salmon for a dip that tastes bright and flavorful. Serve the salmon cream cheese dip with a variety of crackers and you’ve got the perfect make-ahead party appetizer that’s fancy enough for everything from brunches to baby showers and easy enough for…well…weeknight spring picnics outside.

It’s no secret that we love salmon (hi panko salmon , air fryer salmon , and salmon stir fry to name a few) at our house, but we also like, no, LOVE, smoked salmon. If you find yourself with some extra salmon after you make this salmon dip with cream cheese, serve up a bagels and lox spread or make my smoked salmon sandwich . You can find smoked salmon at any grocery store, and if you shop at TJ, check out my Trader Joe’s smoked salmon review.

smoked salmon dip platter

This delicious smoked salmon dip recipe is jam-packed with shredded Jarlsberg Swiss cheese, fresh herbs, and crème fraiche for an unbelievably tasty appetizer. You will not be able to stop eating this dip once you try it.

I’m a big-time salmon fan and would eat it for every meal if given the chance. If you love it as much as I do then try out my Salmon Patties or Brown Sugar Salmon Recipe .

Smoked Salmon Dip

Smoked salmon dip is a mayonnaise-based dip that is mixed with smoked salmon, vegetables, and herbs. It’s a simple-to-prepare dip that can feature an assortment of crackers and vegetables for dipping. This recipe can also be customized to your liking by adding different amounts or ingredients.

I chose to smoke the salmon myself to provide a fresher smokier flavor than when purchasing it from the grocery store. If you go this route, you will have smoked salmon left over but it’s great to use in other recipes like pasta .

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Salmon – You will need smoked salmon for this recipe which can be done yourself or pre-smoked from the store.
  • Mayonnaise – Use a good full-fat mayonnaise for this recipe.
  • Cream Cheese – This will need to be full-fat and at room temperature to make it easy to mix.
  • Crème Fraiche – I like to use some crème fraiche in this instead of sour cream.
  • Cheese – Some shredded Swiss cheese takes this salmon dip over the top.
  • Onion – A few green onions and red onions help elevate the flavor.
  • Herbs – Fresh dill is the perfect herb to use with salmon.
  • Lemon – I like to add a little clean acid to help balance the flavors.
  • Capers – These are perfect for some great brine flavors and a texture that complements the other dip ingredients.

How to Make a Smoked Salmon Dip

  • If you are smoking the salmon yourself, using a fork or spoon, break it up into smaller bite-size pieces.

Next, in a large bowl add the cream cheese, mayonnaise, crème fraiche, cheese, onions, dill, capers, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Mix using a rubber spatula until completely combined and smooth.

Make-Ahead and Storage

Make-Ahead: You can make this smoked salmon dip up to 1 day ahead of time.

How to Store: Cover and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. You can freeze this covered for up to 3 months. Thaw it in the refrigerator for 1 day or until thawed. You may need to remix and season the dip to return to the original consistency.

Chef Notes + Tips

  • An alternative to crème fraiche is sour cream.
  • Regular Swiss cheese will work fine in this recipe.

This dip is DELICIOUS! Thank you for another great recipe, Billy! We are planning to make this for all of our summer get-togethers!

Thanks for giving it a shot!!

Made this smoked salmon dip for a News Years Day appetizer this year up at the cabin. It was so so delicious to enjoy with a glass of wine with friends after coming in from a 2 hour back county ski on a sunny day in Wyoming!!!! I actually made it the night before and I will say the flavors get even better the next day as they have time to blend as it sits in ones fridge. It was a delicious smoked salmon dip! I will definitely add this to my arsenal of favorite appetizer recipes!! Love checking out your posts on all your wonderful recipes. Thank you for posting this recipe prior to New Years! Happy New Years to you!!!

The best smoked salmon dip, ever. The Chef has everything he makes delicious and shares his recipes 😋

Very good! Every Billy Parisi recipe that I’ve made has never disappointed.

  • Sara Stewart

Great recipe, Chef Billy! I love that you use capers and sophisticated ingredients. I used a wonderful fillet of salmon from Annie Gunn’s and it was divine! I think how good it turns out is directly related to the quality of the salmon. This is company/party worthy and a winner!

many thanks!

  • Sara Stewart Wainwright

Hi Billy, This is one luscious recipe, wow! It does take awhile to prepare the ingredients, but I actually enjoy doing that and improving my knife skills. It’s also a very elegant dish, and a few garnishes would make it look even better. I think you said you once lived in St. Louis, and I live in a suburb. Dierberg’s smokes salmon fresh every day, so I used that and it worked great. We are so spoiled here with great grocery stores. One suggestion is to use a hand mixer to incorporate the cream cheese, mayo and creme fraiche. Even though I thoroughly softened them, a spatula and even a whisk didn’t do it completely like I wanted. Hand mixer did the trick. Thanks for a great recipe!

thanks for giving it a shot!!

Made this salmon dish for a party tonight and it was outstanding. Once again Chef Parisi assembles a flavor filled dip for our enjoyment! So fun to try something new and fairly easy to make! The capers add a nice subtle flavor!

Glad you liked it!

Salmon recipe is perfect tasting.

  • Marguerite Trail

I just made this and it is fantastic! Rather than a smoked salmon fillet, I used sliced smoked salmon that you can find in the deli (lox—what you would put on a bagel with cream cheese), imported from Europe, and pulled/sliced it. It worked great! The Jarlsberg Swiss cheese was delicious— the first time I’ve had it. This dip would be wonderful for a party (but it’s all mine today!)!

WOW, this sounds amazing. I love smoked Salmon. I eat it for a snack with crackers or on a Bagel with cream cheese. This dip is right up my ally. I use a lot of your recipes Billy. I love them and they are all so good full of flavor. My son is just beginning to do BBQ competitions and I have always made his rubs and sauces for him. and I use several of your tips and ingredients when I make them. I really love you Vinegar based BBQ sauces.

I know having the best appetizer recipe at a party isn’t a competition per se , but this Smoked Salmon Dip recipe steals the show! Salty, smoky, creamy, and herby, it is the sort of unstoppably delish dip that ruins dinner appetites in the best possible way.

Over the years, I’ve tested many appetizer recipes on my pals, and (except for a few of the top-notch appetizers in  my cookbook ), I have never heard them gush profusely the way they did over this smoked salmon dip.

I set down the dip, then watched.

G-O-N-E. People were elbowing each other at the bowl to get more bites!

The star power of this appetizer is one that I’ve rarely seen rivaled. ( Hot Crab Dip and Crab Stuffed Mushrooms created a similar stampede effect.)

Plus, it gets better—smoked salmon dip can be made completely in advance.

Prep it the day before your party, then do your best to stay away from it.

5 Star Review

“I made this salmon dip for Christmas Day and it was a HUGE hit! Several family members asked for the recipe. I will definitely make this again.” — Karen —

How to Make the Best Smoked Salmon Dip

This healthy smoked salmon dip is made with a blend of light cream cheese and Greek yogurt, hot smoked salmon (which you can buy ready to go—more on this below), and simple spices you already have in your cabinet.

For another tasty salmon appetizer, don’t miss these Salmon Croquettes .

The Ingredients

  • Hot Smoked Salmon . Tender, flaky, and deeply-flavored, hot smoked salmon creates a truly scrumptious dip with a smoky flavor. Hot smoked salmon is also healthy. It’s rich in protein, vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids. (Looking for dinner recipes? Check out these salmon recipes .) Want to make your own? Check out my Smoked Salmon recipe.

The Best Smoked Salmon for Dip

For this recipe, it pays to seek out hot smoked salmon , which you can find at many grocery stores and Trader Joe’s.

  • Hot smoked salmon is thick, flakes easily, and provides intense, salty, umami flavors. In the package, it looks like a single cooked fillet.
  • Cold smoked salmon is much thinner and softer and usually comes in thin slices. You may see it called “lox style” or “Norwegian.” Cold smoked salmon can also has a raw uncooked appearance.

Cold smoked salmon tastes great on bagels with cream cheese or on salads, but I prefer the thicker, meatier texture and more robust flavor of hot smoked salmon for a dip.

Smoked salmon in a storage container

  • Cream Cheese . Light cream cheese provides all the richness and creaminess this dip needs. (It’s also my trick to these lightened-up Jalapeño Poppers .)
  • Greek Yogurt . I knew I wanted to make smoked salmon dip no mayo, and Greek yogurt was the perfect addition. It’s creamy, tangy (like a smoked salmon dip with sour cream), and packed with protein.
  • Spicy Brown Mustard . Earthy and a little bit spicy.
  • Dill . For freshness and herb flavor. Plus, salmon and dill are absolutely delicious together. (I submit this Poached Salmon as evidence.)

Substitution Tip

If you prefer a smoked salmon dip without dill, you can omit it or use another herb of your choice.

For a fun swap, you could make smoked salmon dip with capers instead of or in addition to the dill.

  • Hot Sauce . The ingredient that keeps you coming back for more. Classic Tabasco sauce is my go-to for this recipe.
  • Lemon . Gives the dip a pop of acidity and brightness. (I also love to serve lemon beside these Salmon Patties too.)

How to Serve Smoked Salmon Dip

Serve this dip with one or more of the following options to complete your smoked salmon dip spread:

  • Pita Chips . One of our favorite things to dip with.
  • Bagel Chips . These are perfectly crunchy and delicious.
  • Crostini . A fantastic, slightly-elevated way to serve this dip for parties.
  • Veggies . Crisp, raw veggies are a fantastic dipping option. Try veggies like radish chips, carrot sticks, and/or celery.
  • Crackers . Dunk your favorite crackers into this dip.

The Directions

Greek yogurt being whisked in a bowl

  • Beat the yogurt and cream cheese together.

Greek yogurt, mustard, and spices being whisked in a bowl

  • Add the juice, mustard, spices, and hot sauce.

Salmon being stirred into a bowl of Greek yogurt with dill

  • Stir in the salmon and dill. Serve with additional dill and black pepper. DIG IN!

Easy smoked salmon dip without sour cream in a white bowl

Storage Tips

  • To Store . 3 to 4 days is how long smoked salmon dip will last in the fridge. Refrigerate it in an airtight storage container.
  • To Freeze . In my opinion, you cannot freeze salmon dip. I think the texture will be off once the dip has thawed.

Meal Prep Tip

Up to 1 day in advance, prepare the recipe as directed. Cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to serve.

Leftover Ideas

Leftover salmon dip can become a delicious sandwich. Spread the dip between two pieces of bread and add any other desired sandwich ingredients (lettuce, tomato, and pickles would be tasty). You could also turn your leftovers into a pasta salad by stirring this dip into cooked and cooled short pasta noodles. See Salmon Salad for more inspiration.

Frequently Asked Questions

While I prefer (and strongly suggest) using hot-smoked salmon, you can use cold smoked if you prefer. Make sure to mince it very finely.

To make this recipe dairy free, you’ll need to make smoked salmon dip without cream cheese or Greek yogurt. Instead, use a dairy-free alternative for both the cream cheese and Greek yogurt.

While this dip isn’t super spicy, it does have a little kick from the spicy brown mustard and hot sauce. If you need the dip to be less spicy, I recommend cutting back on the hot sauce to taste.

Hi Karen! So glad you enjoyed the dip! Thank you for this kind review!

I want to try this! Wondering is there a particular type/flavor or brand of hot sauce that you typically use in this? We always have an assortment of hot sauce on hand so wondering which one you use! Also same thing for the spicy mustard, do you have a go to brand?

Hi TS! I vary it up, but for the most part Tabasco is my go t0, especially for seafood. I know have a specific brand for spicy mustard. Hope you enjoy it!

Question…is the salmon hot when you mix in or is it smoked in a hot way? Sorry..this may be a dumb question!

Hi Shelly! Not at all. When you buy smoked salmon it is normally in the cooler section of the seafood counter. The hot-smoked just refers to how it was processed and it gives off a more smoky flavor. Hope this helps!

Hi Janice! So glad you enjoyed the recipe! Thank you for this kind review. Please email us at [email protected] to help you with your registration.

Sounds really good! I think I might throw in some capers.

Hope you enjoy it!

This is a great recipe that we love. I can only get maple bourbon smoked salmon this time. Do you think that would work?

Hi Betsy! I have no idea how the flavor of the dip would but I’m curious to know! If you decide to experiment with it, I’d love to know how it turns out!

So glad to hear, Kasia. Glad it froze well for you!

Five Minute Salmon Dip

salmon dip pinterest graphic

This salmon dip is undoubtedly the easiest and quickest dip you can make! A fresh and flavourful dip made with canned salmon, this quick salmon dip is perfect for a party celebration or special occasions with friends! Great for picnics, Christmas, Easter, wedding or baby showers or if you need a quick dip to take around to friends for game day!

white bowl with blue rim, crackers on left hand side, bowl filled salmon dip

Salmon ! My favorite fish ! 5-minute salmon dip! My favorite dip!

This dip is so easy, it literally takes about 5 minutes to make. It's kind of a cheats dip, considering you buy a can of salmon from the supermarket to use, and use other store-bought ingredients, but I am so down with food that is quick and flavorful that I'll let that one slip!

three images in a row, first image salmon dip ingredients in bowl, second image mayo being poured in, third image mayo being stirred

I always have a tin of salmon in the pantry just in case we have friends over and I need something to make quickly. All you gotta do is chop the onions and parsley and mash everything together with mayonnaise! Oh and season and garnish! Too easy!

I remember vividly when this post went live last year (I've been doing some content updates!). We had some friends over as 'guinea pigs' for recipe testing and I made this salmon dip and a disastrous gnocchi!

I made the regrettable decision to make sweet potato ricotta gnocchi from scratch, thinking it would be a great recipe for the blog. It wasn't. It was everything short of a disaster and needless to say I haven't attempted it again.

Seriously, people, gnocchi is HARD to make! And other bloggers make it look so easy.

So in light of the disastrous gnocchi attempt, something pure and beautiful did come out of that dinner - this 5-minute salmon dip, and my beautiful lemon and coconut tart .

This salmon dip is seriously so easy to make, anyone can do it. It also utilises simple ingredients found in supermarkets in the States and in Australia. We've actually been making it for years and years, it was a recipe that one of our neighbours gave us when I was back in High School!

You know a good recipe when you've been making it for that long!

tin of bumblebee pink salmon

Tips for making this salmon dip

The key to making this dip exceptional is the way you dice the onions. Let's face it, no one like onion over empowerment, which is why you need to dice it as finely as possible. Here's a link to a YouTube video  to assist you with onion chopping. You will need to cut across to the back of the onion about 3 - 4 times to make sure it is diced small enough.

Fun fact of the day - Adam (hubby) used to work in a restaurant and has ace knife skills. Me, not so much. I drop knives dangerously close to my feet... a lot.

You will also need to ensure the green onion/spring onion is diced very finely as well, I'm talking about like 2-3mm/0.11inch (if that is even possible to gauge in inches?). The finer the dice, the better it will taste. There is nothing worse with this dip than having huge chunks of stinky onion, and frankly, at a dinner party, no one wants smelly onion breath!

salmon dip in bowl in front of glass of wine

This recipe also requires adjusting the salt, pepper, and mayonnaise to taste. I used ⅓ cup of mayo but you might need to add more depending on individual taste. Also, American cup sizes are slightly different to Australia's, but I haven't quite figured that one out just yet! As all of my recipes, salt and pepper are added to taste. How much salt you add totally depends on how salty your salmon is, so ALWAYS KEEP TASTING and adjusting as you go!

Sorry, didn't mean to be yelly, just wanted to reinforce how important it is to always taste your food! If there is anything I've learned from watching Australian reality cooking TV shows, is the essence of tasting as you go! And remember, you can always add more salt and pepper, but you can't take it away!

Aside from that, this salmon dip literally takes about 5 minutes to make. Serve with bagel crisps or water crackers/wafers and you've got yourself the perfect dinner party entree!

Enjoy - Georgie x x

I did half the recipe- 7 4 oz of cooked salmon but 1/3 cup of mayo seems like a little amount for 14.75 oz of salmon and cutting that in half seems like not enough for 7.4oz?? Is that amount accurate or is canned salmon wetter than cooked salmon?

October 27, 2019 at 10:11 am

Hey Sarah, thank you for the feedback! Cooked salmon is definitely drier than canned salmon. Canned salmon contains a lot of oil and the brine which makes it a little moist, so if you used cooked salmon you would have lost that. I'd suggest using more mayonnaise if you were using cooked salmon. Hope that helps 🙂

Fast Prep, Big Flavours

Small book

My cookbook "Dinner" now available!

Smoked salmon dip.

You can’t buy a Smoked Salmon Dip with flavour this good! It truly tastes of smoked salmon, it’s soft and creamy with a subtle tang from cream cheese and lemon, and the freshness of dill. This is a dip to impress!

You'll never buy a Smoked Salmon Dip with flavour this good! www.recipetineats.com

I consider this dip a bit fancy pants because the cost to make this is probably about 2 to 3 times the cost to buy a tub from the supermarket. Whereas usually, I’m chirping “this recipe is better AND cheaper than store bought!”, like these copycat Gourmet Crackers which I swear is about 80% cheaper than buying them and I double swear that they taste better.

But in this case, the homemade version costs more.

BUT it tastes SO MUCH BETTER and it’s flavour money can’t buy!! If you’ve ever tried store bought Smoked Salmon Dip, you’d know that it tastes kind of sour and only tastes mildly of smoked salmon. And let’s be honest, it can’t be real because real smoked salmon has to be consumed with 3 – 5 days after opening the packet.

Homemade is made with the real thing – real fresh smoked salmon. And as a result, it truly tastes like smoked salmon. Really truly!

Best Smoked Salmon in Australia. www.recipetineats.com

Smoked salmon is not the cheapest thing in the world, especially if you get good quality (Huon Salmon is my favourite – it’s certainly the freshest in Australia + sustainably farmed). So using it in a dip is a good way to make less go further because when it’s blitzed up, it makes the flavour bloom so it’s much more intense than stirring chopped salmon into the dip.

You'll never buy a Smoked Salmon Dip with flavour this good! www.recipetineats.com

HOW TO MAKE SMOKED SALMOM DIP

In addition to using real smoked salmon, the other bursts of freshness in this dip are lemon juice  and zest (lemon flavour comes from the zest, tang comes from the juice) and fresh dill.

I like to use a combination of cream cheese, sour cream (to lighten up the mixture a bit, I find using only cream cheese is too dense) and mayonnaise (for a bit of extra richness and flavour). This is pretty much the same base I use for all my dips .

Serve it with breadsticks, crackers or crostinis. Crostinis are super easy to make yourself – just slice a small breadstick, brush or spray with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and bake!  – Nagi x

Ingredients

  • ▢ 200 g / 7 oz smoked salmon (or trout)
  • ▢ 200 g / 7 oz Philadelphia cream cheese , full fat
  • ▢ 1/4 cup / 55g sour cream (Note 1)
  • ▢ 1/4 cup / 60g mayonnaise (Note 1, 2)
  • ▢ 1/4 cup fresh dill , roughly chopped
  • ▢ 1/2 garlic clove , minced
  • ▢ 1 1/2 tsp lemon zest (1 lemon)
  • ▢ 1 - 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • ▢ Pinch of salt and pepper

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients in a food processor, starting with 1 tbsp lemon juice. Only use a small pinch of salt to start because smoked salmon is salty, also bear in mind saltiness of crackers being used.
  • Whizz until fairly smooth - about 10 seconds on high - scraping sides as required.
  • Adjust lemon and salt to taste. Whizz again briefly.
  • Transfer into bowl, garnish with lemon slices and more dill if desired. Serve at room temperature with crackers - I like using melba toasts and mini crostinis.

I’ve made this a few times and it’s my daughter’s favourite dip!

I omitted the sour cream and mayo, and subbed with Greek yoghurt.

Delicious! Can this recipe (salmon dip) be frozen? Otherwise I may have to halve the recipe for my husband and I, unless making it for a party. From other comments it appears that it could be heated for a pasta dish. Thanks!

Hi Nagi Just made the dip and it’s a bit too lemony, what can I do?

' src=

December 24, 2020 at 4:31 pm

Leave it for a few hours, if you can. Lemon loses flavour over time! Then try a bit of extra mayo – that will add richness to take the edge off the lemon! N x

Alaska is ready

Make 2024 your year

Your three-hour tour will take you into the heart of Alaska and introduce you to a family who has made the rivers of Alaska their way of life for five generations.

Chena Village Living Museum

Be immersed in frontier living first hand with a guided walking tour of an Athabascan village. You’ll see an Athabascan  village with cabins made of spruce logs, a cache used for storing supplies, a primitive spruce bark hut and fur pelts. Our guides will explain how the wolf, fox, martin and beaver were used to provide food and protection in the harsh Arctic climate. They will also share how the Athabascans skillfully survived for over 10,000 years and how they adapted to village life and Western culture in the past century.

At the end of your guided tour, you will have time to explore the village on your own, interact with our guides and visit dogs from Susan Butcher’s Trail Breaker Kennel.

Bush Pilot Demonstration

See an Alaskan bush pilot takeoff and land right next to the boat! ( 1 ) ‍ Our pilot will share his stories of village life and explain the vital role planes play in remote Alaska.

Trail Breaker Kennel

Visit the home and kennel of the late four-time Iditarod champion Susan Butcher as we pass Trail Breaker Kennel along the Chena River. Learn first hand about kennel life and the challenges that go into making a champion dogsled team. Dave and Tekla Monson, Susan’s husband and daughter, share stories of life on the trails as puppies play in anticipation of joining the team. Keep your cameras ready; you will not want to miss the dog mushing demonstration!

Steamboat Landing

Trading posts in the early days of Western contact were popular with people in Alaskan Villages, and that tradition continues with the Discovery Trading Post (on-board Discovery III) and Steamboat Landing (onshore). Both stores offer gifts and products that are unique to Alaska and the Native culture. To this day, we strive to follow Captain Jim’s commitment to give visitors “the best value at the best price” by offering Fairbanks’ largest selection of Alaskan souvenirs and gifts.

A family business

The Binkley family’s steamboating tradition goes back over 100 years and five generations. In 1898, when Charles M. Binkley hiked over the Chilkoot Pass with other stampeders, he was not so much in search of gold as he was the chance to build and operate boats on the Yukon and its tributaries. He became a respected pilot and boat builder in the North. His son, Captain Jim Binkley, Sr., followed in his father’s footsteps and piloted freight vessels on the Yukon and Tanana Rivers in the 1940's.

As transportation systems changed in the north, railroads and airplanes began to carry much of the freight. In 1950, noting the coming changes in the freighting business, Captain Jim and his wife, Mary, began a river excursion business focusing on sharing their love of Alaska and its culture with visitors. Over the coming years, Captain Jim and Mary B’s business grew from the Godspeed, a 25 passenger vessel, to the Discovery III, a 900 passenger vessel. Today, Captain Jim’s grandchildren run the company and Mary B is still active in the business.

In addition to growing their sternwheel business, the Binkley’s have added a gold mining attraction: Gold Dredge 8. The family has developed a tour in the heart of the gold fields where the first gold strikes attracted miners from the Klondike. They have incorporated large scale industrial mining and the smaller 'Mom and Pop' side of mining into an all-encompassing tour that also features the Trans Alaska Pipeline and a replica of the Tanana Valley Railroad.

Can I do both the Riverboat Discovery and Gold Dredge 8 tours in one day?

Yes, our tours are designed so you can do both tours in one day. However, please note that these tours are not at the same location.

Are reservations required?

Although reservations are not required, they are highly recommended. We recommend making reservations as soon as you know the date you would like to go on our tours.

What time should I arrive for my tour?

We recommend arriving at the Riverboat Discovery at least 30 minutes prior to departure time. When you arrive at the Riverboat Discovery you will need to check in at our ticket counter to pick up your boarding passes.

We recommend arriving at Gold Dredge 8 at least 15 minutes prior to departure time. When you arrive at Gold Dredge 8 you will need to check in at our train station in the parking lot to pick up your boarding passes.

How do I get to your location?

The Riverboat Discovery is located a few miles from Fairbanks International Airport. Take Airport Way West towards the airport; take a right onto Dale Road; continue about 1/2 mile and take a right onto Discovery Drive; we are located at the end of Discovery Drive.

Gold Dredge 8 is located about 25 minutes outside of Fairbanks on the Old Steese Highway. Take the Steese Highway (Route 2) North; take a left onto Goldstream Road; take a left onto Old Steese Highway (the first cross-road); our entrance is the first driveway on the right.

How long should I allow to get to each location?

The Riverboat Discovery is roughly 7 miles from downtown Fairbanks. We recommend allowing 20 minutes to get from downtown Fairbanks to the Riverboat Discovery.

Gold Dredge 8 is roughly 10 miles from downtown Fairbanks. We recommend allowing 25 minutes to get from downtown Fairbanks to Gold Dredge 8.

What address do I enter in my GPS to get to your location?

Riverboat Discovery: 1975 Discovery Drive, Fairbanks, AK 99709

Gold Dredge 8: 1803 Old Steese Highway North, Fairbanks, AK 99712

I don’t have a car. What is the best way to get to the Riverboat Discovery and/or Gold Dredge 8?

We recommend renting a car while in Fairbanks so you can explore the beauty of our widespread community. Many local hotels offer shuttles to the Riverboat Discovery. We recommend checking with the front desk at your hotel for the best transportation option to the Riverboat Discovery. Many of our Riverboat Discovery guests arrive via taxi or shuttle. We do not recommend taking a taxi to our Gold Dredge 8 location. It is outside of town and a taxi would be quite expensive. We recommend either renting a car or checking into a shuttle service such as Go North (907-452-9999) or Airlink (907-452-3337).

What should I bring on my tour?

We recommend bringing a camera and a light jacket.

What should I wear on my tour?

We always suggest wearing layers. A portion of our tours at both locations are outdoors where you are exposed to the elements. Our boats at the Riverboat Discovery have heated/air-conditioned decks for your comfort. The train at Gold Dredge 8 is open air and has a roof.

Is the tour ever cancelled due to the weather?

In our 70+ year history, we have never cancelled a tour due to the weather. If it is sprinkling rain, we provide ponchos, seat cushions and umbrellas for our guests at both locations. If it is pouring rain at the Riverboat Discovery, we will bring the village tour onto the boat.

Will I see wildlife?

You will see reindeer as part of the tour at the Riverboat Discovery.

Will there be a Bush Pilot Demonstration Today?

We strive to have every part of the tour available each day, however several weather factors can ground the planes doing the demonstration. We may cancel the Bush Pilot Demonstration due to severe winds, fog, ice flows, or any other weather conditions that make it unsafe to fly on that day.

Is there anything available to eat on the tour?

We have complimentary coffee and fresh donuts at the Riverboat Discovery. If you are looking for something more than donuts, we have three options available at the Riverboat Discovery: Discovery Dining Hall, where we serve a hearty miner’s stew (vegetarian and gluten-free options available upon request); galleys on board the boats that have snack food (reindeer dogs, chili, chips, etc.); Captain’s Corner, where we offer lunch boxes (sandwiches, salad, chips and a soda). We also serve locally made ice cream on the boats and at Captain’s Corner in the gift shop. At Gold Dredge 8, we serve complimentary freshly baked cookies, coffee and hot chocolate.

Is there assigned seating on the boat or train?

No, seating is on a first come first served basis. Every seat on board is a great seat. We have TV monitors on every deck and train car that feature a live broadcast and provide supplementary informational footage.

Is there alcohol available for purchase?

Yes, at the Riverboat Discovery, we serve beer and wine on board our boats and in the Discovery Dining Hall.

Are there restrooms on the boat and train?

How long is the tour and how often do tours run?

The tour at the Riverboat Discovery is three hours long. The Gold Dredge 8 tour is two hours long. Both of our tours run twice a day from mid-May to mid-September.

What is your refund policy?

Are your tours wheelchair accessible?

Yes, our tours are wheelchair accessible . At the Riverboat Discovery, wheelchairs must board at the stern (back of the boat near the paddle wheel). When you arrive please notify an associate at the ticket counter or collection booth as we require wheelchairs to pre-board and be escorted by a trained Deckhand. Our Athabascan Village has gravel paths that allow easy access. If you need assistance at the Athabascan Village please notify a Deckhand. At Gold Dredge 8, we have certain train cars that are wheelchair accessible. When you arrive notify the associate that is assisting with boarding and they will direct you to the appropriate train car.
