Changer sans changer! une véritable gageure…

Mis à l’eau en 2019, en version classique, il ne cesse d’évoluer, comme souvent avec nos Codes. Depuis 2023, il est également disponible en version «Sundeck».

Ce Dayboat d’inspiration néoclassique construit en carbone, conçu pour la croisière et la régate outre sa parfaite tenue à la mer dans les vents forts, et son habitabilité révèle un formidable potentiel de performances grâce à̀ son gréement puissant, son devis de poids très strict, son rapport de lest, son tirant d’eau et ses équipements.

Son histoire

Il fallait être élégant, tout aussi élégant que le Code 0, mais aller plus vite, et disposer de plus d’espace à l’intérieur pour offrir la possibilité de vivre à bord et partir en voyage…

En 2019, l’architecte Marc Lombard se voit confier le dessin de ce nouveau bateau, avec la mission de respecter l’esprit de son aîné, et notamment la silhouette de son fameux roof en dog house et de sa voute arrière, réplique des voiliers classiques; son allure générale, conserve les Codes chers à la marque et lui confère cette élégance sobre et racée, inspirée des anciens yachts de jauge internationale.

Le Code 0.1 se décline en 3 versions:

• Classic: cockpit fermé 
• Sun-Deck: cockpit ouvert sur l’arrière
• Spirit: Grand-voile Marconi et quille courte

Naviguer à bord d’un Code 0.1 est d’une simplicité déconcertante; toutes les manœuvres sont pensées pour être faciles et à portée de main: foc auto-vireur, manœuvres au cockpit, feront la joie du capitaine et de son équipage mais également du solitaire. Les sensations typiques des déplacements légers procurent des émotions grisantes ! Les accélérations sont immédiates à la moindre brise, et le passage dans la mer est d’une efficacité rare.

Les versions bénéficiant de quilles relevables permettent d’accéder à tous les ports à faible profondeur.  Les deux safrans assurent un contrôle optimum des trajectoires, et le gréement en carbone apporte outre son poids, d’infinie possibilités de réglages. Sa large carène lui confère bien entendu puissance et raideur, élément essentiel pour la performance et le confort. Le Code 0.1 est construit en fibre de carbone sèches et résine Epoxy. Chaque pièce est faite en infusion ce qui permet de limiter le poids en contrôlant de façon optimum les quantités de résine utilisées. Ce procédé consiste à mettre les pièces drapées de tissus de carbone secs sous vide dans un moule fermé par une bâche, lesquels sont ensuite imprégnés sous vide par injection de la quantité de résine utile, qui est aspirée par la dépression créée dans le moule.

La coque et le pont sont construits dans des moules séparés et sont assemblés ensuite manuellement par collage et stratification. Toute la structure des bateaux est préalablement assemblée par collage et stratification dans la coque.

L’ensemble est enfin enduit puis peint avant l’intégration des systèmes (safrans, quille, énergie, moteur etc…), des composants électroniques et électriques, l’accastillage, le teck, l’aménagement, la préparation du mât et de la bôme.

Code 0.1: a neo-retro cruiser for regatta and cruise

All comfort: the successor to Code 0 offers much more volume - and therefore the possibility of living on board. Launched in July 2019, Code 0.1 should seduce lovers of beautiful sailing boats with (almost) vintage design.

That was 10 years ago: Black Pepper launched its Code 0 (pictured above), the first sailboat in a range that has grown considerably since then. The concept? Offer a particularly high-performance support, pleasant to steer, well equipped, all dressed up with a retro touch. The latter focuses on the deckhouse - a near replica of a dog house of a classic sailboat . The success of Code 0 in regattas is undeniable. A fleet has even been built up in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. On the other hand, on the commercial side, the results are more mixed. 20 units in 10 years is only one Code 0 every six months..

A project that started in early 2018

It was in the spring of 2018 that Michel de Franssu, owner and creator of the site, started the 0.1 project with the local architect Marc Lombard . In the specifications, the accommodation is much closer to cruise standards. In fact, Code 0.1 now offers a height under the deck of 1.74 m (compared to 1.31 m for the old model) and another 1.56 m under the deck. There is a real square around the keel well - two benches and a table - a double berth in the front, two coffin berths in the back, closed toilets and a real kitchen. A shower is available as an option. On the first model, the large bed is a Breton bed, open and therefore without partitions, but it is possible to close it. At the very front, a large volume accessible through a deck hatch acts as a sail hold - it will soon also be opened inside.

The volume of a real cruiser

Of course, this interior comfort translates into a larger hull volume: the freeboard is significantly increased and the width is reduced from 2.70 m to 3.00 m. To maintain a sporty look - and flattering performance - the deck adopts a unique reverse shearing system. This formula saves weight at the ends while maintaining a higher height in the middle of the hull. The very slightly inverted bow contributes to a modern design, as do the marked bilges. At the rear, the cut angle certainly personalizes the boat .

Carbon? They are everywhere...

The shipyard's mastery of high-tech construction - all the boats are built in carbon/epoxy - makes it possible to maintain a particularly flattering weight estimate: 2,200 kg, including 1,050 kg of ballast. The old Code 0 is a little lighter at 1,850 kg. But the ballast ratio is more favourable at 0.1 : 47.7% compared to 43.2 for the old model.

Code 0.1 Open offers a lifting keel , a mainsail with horn and rigging with double runners - it is in this configuration that the n°1 was presented. The sail area increases from 50 m2 upwind on Code 0 to 59 on 0.1. But an optimized Spirit IRC version is also available. Less covered (50 m2 upwind) with its classic mainsail , it does without runners and adopts a significantly heavier fixed keel . The mobile bowsprit is abandoned in favour of a fixed delphinium of 1.16 m in length. This configuration allows, during cruising, to leave the anchor in position.

A more conventional deck layout

The original deck layout of Code 0 with central winch and offset descent is abandoned in favour of a more traditional distribution. On the other hand, all manoeuvres are hidden under a false bridge. The cockpit is closed to offer a real rear skirt flush with the water. Balconies, dies and thick footrests make it safe to move around.

Peaks at 20 knots on the program?

Just launched last July in Hyères, Code 0.1 quickly found the right tempo under sail . The bow forefoot quickly cleared the water and as soon as the correct adjustments were validated, the boat sailed upwind at 7.5/8 knots. In 17 knots of wind at 80° from the wind under Code and high GV, the Marc Lombard plan was flashed at 18 knots. The two rudders ensure optimum control of the trajectory, even when the heel is pronounced. During its first races, Code 0.1 hung onto the podiums and proved to be more comfortable than 0 in the light breezy conditions.

Don't think that Code 0.1 is only for hardcore sailors: its self-steering jib rail is there for you to enjoy as a family and even as a solo sailor. Code 0.1, as you have understood, is in no way a redesign of 0 - it is a new boat. A 100% ? No, not quite: the dog house style deckhouse of Code 0 has been preserved, barely enhanced... We have family spirit or not! And if Code 0 disappears from the 2020 catalogue, the site reserves the right to build some on request.

Boat Test: Black Pepper Code 0

Sam Jefferson casts a covetous glance in the direction of the Code 0 a stylish day sailer from Black Pepper Yachts.

Concept 9/10

Which brings me to the concept behind the Code 0. She has two clear aims. First and foremost to look good and secondly to sail fast. Beyond that, forget it. There’s no standing headroom, low guard rails and with that low freeboard, she’s going to be a wet boat. But I ask you, what do you want a yacht for? Transporting bulk cargo? Drinking Bisto in the drizzle off Cowes? Forget it. You want to look good and go fast? Here’s your boat.

The concept is not entirely original but it’s highly laudable. Tofinou, Saffier, Brenta, Huzar and Wally all have variations on this theme of a fast daysailer with modern design characteristics and classic, retro styling. It’s the hipster’s approach to sailing, the deconstructed coffee of the yachting world. Yet beneath that shiny veneer there is some real substance. She’s designed by Romaric Neyhousser, best known for his work with Verdier on yachts such as Comanche. He worked on the Code 0’s design with Yves Parlier who needs no further introduction here. The design has actually been around for a couple of years now, but is now available in the UK. She made her debut at the Southampton Boat Show September 2016.

She’s 33ft long, with a modest 8ft 8in beam so wetted surface area is kept low. The beam is carried well aft however, and the stern terminates with an odd combination of aft raked transom that is then raked forward at deck level. It sounds odd, but it works.

Freeboard is low and and the hull is constructed of post-baked carbon epoxy foam sandwich, which sounds impressive, and is an elaborate method of building that ensures an extremely light, strong, stiff boat. This construction method keeps the weight down to 1,850kg, which compares very favourably with 2,264kg for the J/88. She’s got twin rudders and there is an option for a swing keel that gives her a draft of 0.7m with it raised as compared with 2.2m when lowered. The rig is carbon fibre and the standard sail wardrobe comprises of a mainsail, self-tacking jib, Code 0 and asymmetric spinnaker set on a retractable carbon bowsprit. The sail area is generous, with the main doing most off the work on the wind.

On deck she is beautifully finished in teak and mahogany with the decline only broken slightly by the low dog house, which with its narrow slit windows looks very stylish although this design feature does divide opinion. The integrated toe rail is smart and keeps the lines clean, while the low guard rail does not spoil the look of the yacht. Although the Code 0 is 33ft, much of that length is taken up with the aft deck which, with the tiller and mainsheet located well forward, allows for a large open space aft. This is decked over to give the cockpit an enclosed feel and features two lazarette lockers with decent amounts of storage. There is no traveller on the mainsheet, which is fixed to a u-bolt just aft of the rudder stock. All the main sail controls are led underneath the coach roof to a single Harken winch on its own dedicated pedestal. The clutches are recessed into the deck head, which is a neat arrangement. The jib sheets are led to a pair of secondary winches located well outboard and the self tacking jib means you can achieve an absurdly tight sheeting angle.

The boat features a simple, uncomplicated and uncluttered set up and the big aft deck means the mainsheet doesn’t end up getting snarled up with the tiller in the cockpit.

From a styling point of view it all looked very pretty and my only real issue was that the narrow cockpit coamings which, although very useful at deflecting spray, slightly interfered with the helming position. This is a yacht that is going to spend a fair amount of time on her ear and you want to be sitting outboard. I found that I was often in a slightly tenuous position with backside perched on the edge of this coaming and also searching for a decent and substantial foothold.

Under sail 8/10

The test took place on a glorious autumn day in the Solent. Although the weather was beautiful, I couldn’t help but wish I could somehow replace the brutalist Fawley power station with the softer contours of the hills of southern Provence to fully appreciate this yacht in its natural environment. The breeze was a fairly steady 12 knots and, although it was slightly marginal, it was decided that we would go for the full main. For racing, this is a yacht that is well suited to being sailed three-up and the helming position allows plenty of space aft for a dedicated mainsheet trimmer. In the conditions and, given our decision not to reef, it was no surprise that we were slightly overpressed, but the twin rudders gave her tremendous grip and she always felt poised and precise on the helm. Sheltered within the inner confines of Southampton Water there was only a modest chop, but she soaked it up well and with that narrow entrance run well aft, relatively slender hull and long waterline, I imagine she would handle bigger seas comfortably without slamming. She is unquestionably a wet boat and, although the cockpit feels secure, that low freeboard would mean you would eventually feel vulnerable so close to the water in bigger seas.

The benefit of the low freeboard is that you are also closer to the action and that is exhilarating. Combine that with her light displacement and you have a boat that handles and feels more like a dinghy than a 33 footer and that is very life affirming. She’s quick too. Properly quick by monohull standards and was soon taking great chunks of distance out of larger yachts that were in our company.

Hard on the wind, with apparent wind angles in the high 30s, we were hitting speeds of six knots and as soon as we eased the sheets, we rapidly hit seven.

Off the wind the the asymmetric and Code 0 combined with a feather light displacement and excellent control via the twin rudders mean this is a yacht that is eager to get on the plane early. If we had been in waves, I think we could have got her going with ease in the 12 knot breeze.

Interior 6/10

This is essentially a day sailor that you could sleep on for a bit of glamping or an overnight passage. If you’re planning on sleeping onboard for extended periods of time, get another boat. She does feature a twin berth in the bow and a pilot berth, which runs beneath the cockpit. On the test boat, this interior was stripped out and spartan, but this is a semi custom yacht, so you can really fit her out to quite a luxurious spec, with galley units, refrigerator and porta-potti all available.

The fact is though, that you’re never going to have anything other than sitting headroom in here, and, ultimately it all feels a bit tawdry to be talking about porta potti on a yacht that otherwise exudes class.

Verdict 8/10

To my mind, this yacht achieves both of its primary aims. It’s aesthetically pleasing and sails very fast. I’m told she rates well under IRC so is competitive. With that feather light displacement and big sail area, she could doubtless perform spectacularly out on the racecourse in the right hands. The other great benefit would be that, at the end of a day’s racing, you could retire to the bar and spend the evening casually looking out to catch a glimpse of your pride and joy.

If you’re looking at yachts in this size and performance bracket, then the J/88 is the sane man’s choice, but yachting has nothing to do with sanity. For me, this is a yacht that belongs on the Cote d’Azur swinging on a mooring outside your luxury villa. In my opinion, that’s her true domain and if I had the villa, this is the yacht I would choose to accompany it.

Sailing: Seco Marine equips the Code 0.1 boat by Black Pepper with an electrification system

A fully electric sailboat has been launched by two companies from Nantes, Atlantic France. The plug-and-play solution, developed by Seco Marine, was installed on the boat Code 0.1 of Black Pepper shipyard. 

Black Pepper Yachts builds elegant boats that encompass a vintage design. The company, which is located in Nantes, has 15 employees and initiated a partnership with Seco Marine, which is also based in Nantes. Seco Marine is part of the family-owned group Fetis, which was created in 1978 and employs over 500 people in France and abroad.

A 100% electric pilot boat made of carbon

Seco Marine specialises in propulsion and stabilisation solutions with the objective to support the energy transition by integrating electrical and hybrid solutions on ships. 

The company has invented an electrification system which can be installed on sailboats without requiring any structural change. The innovative solution is very compact and is equipped with a 48-volt, 10-kilowatt-hour battery pack. 

The system has been installed on the Code 0.1 , a 1,100 kg and 10 metre long pilot boat, which is made of carbon and built by Black Pepper. It replaces the diesel engine, but also powers the inside of the boat and its electronics.
