7 Best Things to do in Port Dalhousie (Local’s Guide)

Port Dalhousie is easily one of my favourite places in Niagara.

I grew up in the region and I’ve been visiting this area since I was a kid.

Now that I live 13 minutes from Port Dalhousie, I try to come here whenever I can—for dinner, to stroll along the pier, or to watch the sunset over Lake Ontario.

This little pocket of St. Catharines is best known for its lovely beach and antique carousel, but there’s so much more to see and do.

The downtown core is full of beautifully preserved 19th-century buildings, waterfront walking trails, and fantastic restaurants. Plus, there’s always something fun going on here, especially during the summer months.

Whether you’re visiting for the day or planning a weekend getaway, here are some of the best things to do in Port Dalhousie, Ontario.

Table of Contents

1. Chill at Lakeside Park Beach

2. ride a hundred-year-old carousel, 3. eat at all the restaurants, 4. browse independent shops & cafes, 5. walk along a waterfront trail, 6. check out the port dalhousie supper market, 7. local festivals & events, where is port dalhousie, parking in port dalhousie.

The top must-visit spot in Port Dalhousie? Lakeside Park. Situated on the shores of Lake Ontario, this park encompasses a large grassy area and Port Dalhousie’s main draw: a 1,500-foot stretch of sandy beach.

The beach itself is relatively spacious and lined with shady trees so you can find a spot in or out of the sun. There are volleyball nets, washrooms, and a concession building nearby selling snacks and drinks.

It goes without saying, but Port Dalhousie gets very busy in the summer, especially on weekends. Be sure to arrive early if you want to grab a prime spot here for the day.

The beach is awesome during the day, but this is also one of the best places in Niagara to watch the sunset. Stick around past dusk so you don’t miss it.

Beyond the beach you’ll find plenty of picnic tables, a large pavilion, and playground equipment for kids.

Feel like taking a stroll? Head down the pier for panoramic views of the marina, the inner and outer lighthouses, and—if it’s a clear day—the Toronto skyline in the distance.

Parking: On-site paid parking with a three-hour time limit. Amenities: Accessible washrooms, picnic tables, pavilion, volleyball nets, snack bar. Swimming & water quality: This beach is monitored for bacteria levels and other safety concerns. Check beach water testing results before swimming in the lake.

Ask just about any Niagara local if they’ve been to the Lakeside Park Carousel, and the answer is likely yes . It’s basically a rite of passage if you grew up in the area.

Now, this isn’t just any old carousel—it’s a Charles I.D. Looff original, carved between 1898 and 1905 in Brooklyn, New York. Looff was a master carver who built over 40 carousels and several amusement parks, including the Santa Monica Pier in California.

In 1921, the carousel was moved from Scarborough, Ontario to its current location (it was purchased as an attraction for the amusement park that was in Port Dalhousie at the time).

Today, the Friends of the Carousel—a not-for-profit organization—oversee all maintenance and repairs to keep the carousel in pristine condition.

Carousel hours of operation:  Weekends only from May 18 to July 1 (11 a.m. – 8 p.m.) Daily from July 1 to September 2 (11 a.m. – 8 p.m.) Weekends only September 7 to October 14 (11 a.m. – 6 p.m.) Cost: 5 cents per ride Parking: Onsite paid parking

Port Dalhousie has a top-notch restaurant scene. If you’re a foodie, you’ll love it here.

I have a separate post covering the best restaurants in Port Dalhousie , so I’ll briefly touch on a few of my favourites here:

Patio Andaluz: Family-owned restaurant serving Spanish and Mexican dishes. I’m a big fan of their birria tacos and paella. They have a spacious and colourful outdoor patio as well.

KaiserHaus: European-inspired bistro and wine bar. Don’t miss their Sunday brunch specials and local wine selection.

El Chiringuito: Snack bar serving Mexican street food and gelato from Il Gelato di Carlotta—AKA the best gelato shop in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Castillo Shawarma: A delicious and budget-friendly option for lunch or dinner.

One store I always visit in Port Dalhousie? Thistle Bookshop and Cafe . I love an independent bookstore, and this one is owned by a family with ancestral ties to Scotland.

It’s no secret I’m a bit obsessed with all things Scottish. I lived abroad in Edinburgh for several years and it’s my favourite city in the world. But I won’t get into that topic because then I won’t shut up about Edinburgh.

So anyways! Back to Port Dalhousie.

Thistle Bookshop has indoor and outdoor seating, a great selection of books, coffee, and baked goods. It’s a lovely little place to linger for a while.

Another can’t-miss shop is 416 Coffee . Founded by a father and son duo, their ethos is all about ethically sourced coffees roasted to perfection (and they roast their own beans, so they know how to do just that).

Their staff are super friendly and knowledgeable, too. Essentially, you’re guaranteed a great cup of coffee here.

A few other stores you might want to check out are Eco-Chic 3R’s Boutique for sustainable and upcycled clothing, Endless Pawzabilities Pet Boutique , and Glitzy Jools & Antiques .

There are several scenic trails in Port Dalhousie.

The Harbour Walkway Trail is roughly three kilometres (1.86 miles)—perfect for a leisurely jaunt in the area. This trail starts in Lakeside Park and stretches along the Port Dalhousie harbour.

Eventually, you’ll come to a pedestrian bridge (near Heywood Generating Station) which will take you to the east side of the harbour. If you continue on, you’ll pass Dalhousie Yacht Club and Port Dalhousie Pier Marina.

You can then walk along the east pier for up-close views of the inner and outer lighthouses.

While you’re walking this route, keep an eye out for plaques like the one pictured below. They highlight information about the Welland Canal and dive into the region’s history.

Stretching over 3,600 kilometres (2,200 miles), the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail also passes through Port Dalhousie. It’s a mix of residential roads and off-road trails used by both hikers and cyclists.

In St. Catharines, the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail connects the Port Dalhousie harbour, Sunset Beach, and Happy Rolph’s Animal Farm. This St. Catharines trail map is helpful if you want to see the location of the Harbour Walkway Trail and the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail in Port Dalhousie.

The most boats ever will compete in the 100th Bayview Yacht Club race to Mackinac Island

Billed on its website as the “world’s longest continuously run long-distance freshwater yacht race,” the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race is set to start Saturday.

A record-setting 334 boats have registered for the 100th year of the race, shattering the record of 316 in 1985 and a huge contrast compared with the 200 boats that raced last year, said David Stoyka, spokesman for the Bayview Yacht Club, which puts on the race.

Bayview Yacht Club says boats start leaving the Black River in Port Huron around 8 a.m. on race day and will continue leaving until around noon. From the Black River, they will proceed up the St. Clair River, under the Blue Water Bridge, into Lake Huron.

The first scheduled start time in Lake Huron is 11:30 a.m., with starts every 10 minutes until approximately 1:30 p.m. The starts may be delayed due to weather conditions.

This year, for the 100th running, the race will follow the original 1925 route and span 204 nautical miles. From the starting point, the boats will head north along the Michigan shoreline, passing south of Bois Blanc Island, sailing west to east at the finish line between Round Island and Mackinac Island, organizers said.

The range of boats are expected to finish in between 30 and 60 hours.

The sailors

Teams at all skill levels have entered the race, which draws competitors from around the world.  The highly skilled racers know they will cross the bow of competitors within inches. Still, there's always risk of a crash with the slightest miscalculation.

"Everybody recognizes this is super intense," said champion sailor  Tim Prophit , 65, of St. Clair Shores, past commodore of Bayview Yacht Club and owner of Fast Tango, a North American 40 sailboat.

The teams are vying for trophies and flags to show their accomplishments.

The J.L. Hudson Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division I, and the Canadian Club Classic Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division II.

How can spectators follow the race?

Spectators can go to bycmack.com during the race and click on “RaceTracking” link to watch real-time GPS positioning of all the race boats, or, on your mobile device, download the free app YB Races and select the current race.

Boats will start arriving at Mackinac Island on Sunday afternoon and continue until Monday evening, all dependent upon the wind.

Finishes can be seen from Windermere Point on Mackinac Island at the south end of Main Street.

Sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac races are called “Old Goats,” according to the club, while those who have completed 50 are called “Grand Rams.”

"Double Goats" are sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac races and 25 Chicago Yacht Club race to Mackinac races. This year’s Chicago to Mackinac race encountered strong winds in Lake Michigan , snapping some boats’ masts and tossing one sailor overboard. No one was hurt.

Volunteers who have served for 15 years on the Race Committee are honored with the title “Old Forts,” as designated by the Race Committee.

This story includes material from a staff report by former Free Press reporter Phoebe Wall Howard and from the Bayview Yacht Club.

Video shows black bear at North Port, Florida home's front door

A black bear was caught on video approaching the front door of a North Port home.

The North Port Police Department responded to a report of a black bear along Tidwell Street in the North Port Estates area over the weekend, according to a post on the agency's Facebook page.

The caller reportedly told police he'd previously seen the bear on his trail camera but it was now coming closer to their home.

Video shows the bruin wandering along the home's walkway, up the front steps and to the front door, where it lingered.

Black bears are normally too shy to risk contact with humans, but their powerful need to find food can overwhelm this fear, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife.

NPPD warned residents to "secure their garbage cans and other food sources (picnic baskets) to prevent the bear from easily finding food and continuing to inhabit the neighborhood."

Residents are asked to report bear sightings in the area to FWC.

Black bear sightings common in Florida

According to FWC, more than 4,000 black bears are at home in the Sunshine State and it's not uncommon to encounter them.

  • A 500-pound black bear was found fatally shot in Apopka in June. The FWC is investigating that incident.
  • A bear was spotted on the University of Florida campus in June
  • In May, a bear roaming around downtown Fort Myers was caught and relocated

What should you do if you see a bear?

If you encounter a black bear at close range, FWC advises you to stand upright, back up slowly and speak to the bear in a calm, assertive voice.

FWC also recommends the following:

  • Don't feed or intentionally attract bears
  • If a bear eats something on your property, take note and secure it
  • Don't surprise or approach a bear

If you're in your yard:

  • Make sure you're in a safe area and the bear has a clear escape route, then make noise or bang pots and pans to scare the bear away
  • Don't turn your back, play dead, climb a tree or run. Back away slowly.
  • Avoid direct eye contact as the bear may view it as aggressive behavior

Can you shoot a bear on your property?

A new Florida law allows the use of lethal force to kill a bear if the person "reasonably believed that his or her action was necessary to avoid an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury to himself or herself, a pet, or substantial damage to a dwelling."

Notification must be provided to FWC within 24 hours. The agency will dispose of the bear. Possession, sale and disposal of bear parts is prohibited.

Fines for violations can be $5,000.

Stavanger (Norway)

STAVANGER, FROM THE OUTSKIRTS TO THE OLD TOWN WITH CIDER TASTING

Norway - Stavanger

Famous for its oil industry, Stavanger offers much more to its visitors. This approximately four-hour excursion lets you discover the beauty of its surroundings and a city that stretches out in an open landscape, unprotected by Norway's imposing mountains. The journey begins with a scenic 90-minute coastal route, featuring highlights such as the medieval church Sola Ruinkyrkje—an important navigational point for the Jæren coast until the 19th century—the Solastranden beach, popular among surfers and kiters, and the quaint town of Ølberg.

Next, you'll visit the suburb of Hafrsfjord, renowned for its three 10-meter-high bronze swords embedded in the rock. Created by sculptor Fritz Røed, these swords commemorate the battle of 872 and Viking King Harald's victory, which unified Norway. The tallest sword represents the victorious king, while the other two signify his defeated challengers.

Upon returning to Stavanger, you'll pass the petroleum museum and embark on a 30-minute walk to Gamle, the historic center filled with perfectly preserved wooden buildings, some dating back to the 18th century. This charming stroll through the old town will conclude at a local café, where you'll enjoy a 75-minute break to savor cider, affectionately called "Norwegian champagne." Known for its ancient production methods, Norwegian cider is highly esteemed worldwide, and we are confident you'll appreciate it after a taste.
