Motor yacht ALICIA (Ex RS Eden) was launched as "Janidore" in 1930, just prior to the Depression. The yacht was designed by John H. Wells and built by the Defoe Boat and Motor Works of Bay City, Michigan.

ALICIA has a colourful history and enjoyed a succession of owners who cruised on the yacht under a number of names along the Pacific coast, Caribbean, US East Coast and subsequently the Mediterranean. The yacht was completely rebuilt and lengthened in Miami in 1966, under the name NIKI I, following which she returned to the Mediterranean. In 1991 the yacht was renamed Fulmara. After a very successful charter career as Fulmara, she was purchased in 2005.

ALICIA underwent a thorough refit with a significant interior and exterior restyling, returning the vessel to her original style of the 1930s era, with the aim of retaining as many existing details as possible reflecting the elegance of a bygone age. A clipper bow was added along with an extensive rework of her interior, superstructure and systems.

SMS completes three-year restoration of classic 50m superyacht

M/y 'alicia' will now undergo a period of sea trials for two weeks before heading to st. tropez….

Image for article SMS completes three-year restoration of classic 50m superyacht

SMS Group, the British engineering and refit specialist, has announced that 50m M/Y Alicia has officially been launched following a three-year restoration project at its Southampton shipyard. Having now completed three iconic superyacht refits, SMS now finds itself being recognised as a key facility for classic yacht restoration.

Originally built by the US shipyard Defoe Shipbuilding Company in 1930, the owner had one very clear objective for M/Y Alicia ; to retain her heritage and restore the yacht to her original design – with the addition of modern technologies.

“It was really a restoration project from the keel up,” says director, Nicholas Warren, “The owner fell in love with the original boat, which was originally M/Y Janidore and wanted to retain the classic traditional design of the boat.

“Throughout the vessel’s history she’s had good and bad refits, good conversions and bad ones, but what was absolutely key to the owner is that she was reinvigorated along the lines of the original vessel,” continues Warren. “So, all of the effort and energy went into ensuring that the boat that is on the water today, while it ticks the aspirations in terms of interior layout and the focus on his family, stays true to the original as much as possible.”

On such an extensive project, one might be forgiven for thinking that a new build would be more appropriate route to take. However, in this case, it was down to the owner’s fondness for the original 1930s vessel that played a vital role in the decision to redevelop the original vessel.

“The owner has a genuine passion for the history of the vessel,” Warren explains. “While he could easily have taken a picture of the vessel and gone to a shipyard and asked them to build it, the owner had a desire to keep as much of the original boat as possible, while ensuring that their investment is secure for the future. So, the effort and energy that goes through the ship’s systems, from the propulsion to the air conditioning is in effect modern, but he wants to retain as much of the original heritage and tradition as is possible.”

“The launch is a major positive milestone in another huge refit project for the SMS Group, all our colleagues and all our suppliers,”  - Peter Morton, CEO of the SMS Group.

During the build, SMS and the owner recycled as many of the materials from the original build as possible. But, when these materials were unsalvageable, the owner externally sourced materials from the 1930s in order to maintain the authentic appearance of the vessel.

“The launch is a major positive milestone in another huge refit project for the SMS Group, all our colleagues and all our suppliers,” says Peter Morton, CEO of the SMS Group. “It’s big, big news. As a company we are genuinely thrilled to have had the inspiration and support of another truly exceptional British businessman; and whilst the project has been challenging, the end result is simply outstanding. M/Y Alicia is unquestionably beautiful”.

The owner played a vital role in the success of the project and comments of his delight of the work done by SMS. “Refitting Alicia in the UK was the right call and it has been an absolute delight,” comments the owner. “The end result will be something that we can all be very proud of - she’s fantastic, she’s British - and she’s truly unique.  For many years to come she’ll be a big part of our family”.

Now that the yacht has officially been launched and sits outside of the yard, the mast and rig will be fitted to the vessel, along with some final exterior outfitting. Alicia will then undergo the trials and commissioning period for two weeks before heading to  St. Tropez in time for the classic regatta at the end of September.

Following on from this significant project, SMS have more work in the. “We have a couple of very big projects happening in the commercial space at the moment, we’re looking at a work boat and a very large pontoon and with the superyachts we are looking at another classic to come in behind Alicia. In the interim we are actually carrying out another refit and restoration programme for the owner of Alicia on an old Thames barge,” concludes Warren.

MY Alicia launched after Ocean Quay restoration

Superyacht UK administrator Member news Ocean Quay Marina

This Autumn Southampton-based ship repairer SMS had a landmark moment with the launch of newly restored  M/Y Alicia , a 1930s classic superyacht that has undergone major work in the 60m dry dock at Ocean Quay over the last three years.

Peter Morton, the CEO of The SMS Group comments: “Today’s launch is a major positive milestone in another huge refit project for The SMS Group, all our colleagues and suppliers… whilst the project has been challenging, the end result is simply outstanding.  M/Y Alicia  is unquestionably beautiful.”

Rebuilt from the keel up by the reputed repair team at SMS, Alicia is a 50m classic motoryacht built in the United States by Defoe shipyard in 1930. Launched as  M/Y Janidore , she was one of only eight yachts to have been built by the East Coast yard. The vessel’s original naval architecture was by John H. Wells, and she has since undergone several refits, including an extensive lengthening refit in 1966 and again in 2006-7. Arriving in March 2015 at the Southampton shipyard, Alicia has again undergone extensive repair and reconstruction.

The project has required a complete rebuild of the yacht and her systems and has demanded a new hull from the aft machinery bulkhead forward and a completely new aluminium superstructure from Wight shipyard. The in-house team at SMS helped with the structural engineering, the mechanical design and installation, the electrical and hydraulic design and installation, as well as the interior and exterior outfitting.

With such a range of trades within the SMS group, the complete reconstruction of Alicia was able to take place within the 60m dock of the SMS shipyard at Ocean Quay and with all construction in one place in Southampton, the British owner was able to be a huge part in the process.

Chris Norman, the managing director of SMS comments: “M/Y Alicia has proven to be an equally challenging program of works over a three-year period. The owner’s inspirations stem from the vessels true form as  M/Y Janidore . His attention to detail and passion have helped not only lead an inspired team but also restore a truly unique and genuinely wonderful classic to her former glory…By working in a genuinely transparent and honest fashion we’ve not only built a beautiful yacht we’ve also created a wonderful business. It’s been an honour to work with the owner, a real honour.”

One reason for the high price tag is the exceptional superyacht-caliber cabin. The interior was fabricated by the German company Metrica, a 340-year-old firm specializing in yacht and residential interiors, that brought to life designer Patrick Knowles’s vision. It’s rare to have a European company do an interior of a boat being built in the U.S. But the owner clearly wanted to establish a pedigree for the vessel that went beyond the usual sportfish interior. It shows in this boat.

Interior of III Amigos

Metrica literally transported a high level of fit and finish to the project by constructing the interior in Germany and then transferring it piece by piece to Michael Rybovich & Sons Custom Boat Works in Palm Beach Gardens.

There are many details that simply do not exist on other sportfishing vessels. In the salon, the dinette is upholstered in soft, blue leather with glove compartments that match the owner’s Ferrari, as well as the color scheme found in his home on Key Largo. III Amigos’ s galley is also a rarity. The owner had made his money in the food industry, thus this space was sacrosanct. Witness the full-custom, stainless-steel hood over the oven and an outsized Sub-Zero refrigerator the owner chose after the interior plans were complete. That required reframing the interior ceiling so it would fit.

III Amigos Sportfishing Machine

This vessel was, in fact, designed for fishing voyages. The bridge is enclosed (rather than open, like most offshore fishing vessels) for the extra protection from the elements. It also becomes a second, albeit informal, salon for the crew. This boat was meant for long runs from the Keys to the Pacific side of Costa Rica, so the enclosed bridge made good sense.

Superyacht Sportfishing Machine III Amigos.

With twin 2,000 hp M96L MTUs, III Amigos can top out at 41 knots (wildly fast when considering its size) and cruise comfortably at 34 knots. However, for longer runs the captain can bring the throttle down to nine knots for a range of 2,000 nautical miles—enough to get from Miami to the shores of Colombia without refueling.

This new breed of offshore vessels, alongside boats like the 90-foot Jarrett Bay Jaruco and the 97-foot Weaver 18 Reeler , has blurred the dividing line between fishing boat and megayacht. Of course, the most dramatic example is the 171-foot Special One , which launched this summer. Somewhere in the middle, III Amigos carves out its own space, a classic-looking battlewagon with the heart of a superyacht.

Geographic coordinates of Elektrostal, Moscow Oblast, Russia

Coordinates of elektrostal in decimal degrees, coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
