History of Camper & Nicholsons

Camper & Nicholsons is one of the world's oldest yacht builders, having been founded in 1782 by George Camper and Charles Nicholson. The company originally specialised in small but luxurious sailing yachts and rapidly established themselves as the premier boat builder for the European royal family and the upper classes of the time. By the mid-19th century they had opened offices in France and The Netherlands.

In the mid-20th century, Camper & Nicholsons became involved in the development of the motorboat, and in 1966 they merged with the legendary French marque of Beneteau to become the Camper & Nicholsons International Group. This period saw them expanding their operations into building full-size superyachts and they quickly established a reputation for quality and luxury. In recent years they have achieved further success by focusing on the development of luxury motor yachts, and now produce a wide range of vessels. They are still based in the UK, with offices located in Southampton and Gosport.

The interior of this small ship is comfortable and nicely appointed. To starboard, as you enter the companionway, you will find a spacious quarter berth and a full sit-down chart table and nav station. The galley is to port, and ample engine access is under the companionway stairs. There are berths/settees on either side of the salon, with the dining table (leaves extend to seat 6) located in the center.

Forward, the head is spacious with the marine toilet on the port and sink and mirror on the starboard. There is a roomy hanging/wet locker in the head compartment. The V-berth sleeps two comfortably and is surrounded by storage.

Headroom throughout this boat, until you reach the V-berth, is 6'2". The amount of storage is impressive, and this boat is made for long-range cruising.

One owner for the past 20 years has made sure this classic cruiser is equipped for long-range cruising. She has crossed the Atlantic several times and cruised extensively through the Caribbean.

1976 Camper and Nicholsons 31

Seller's Description

This 31’ Camper and Nicholson is hull number 6. Has undergone extensive rebuilds and upgrades to her hull, diesel engine, electrical systems, standing rigging, and running rigging making her a one-of-a-kind dependable world class cruiser.

From 2014 to 2018 she underwent a complete overhaul that included but is not limited to a rebuild of the Yanmar 2QM20, all new running rigging, complete rewiring, osmosis blister removal, outfitted with an overbuilt aluminum stern arch, interior and exterior lighting upgrades, and teak and mahogany interior upgrades.

In 2016, under consultation of one of the last surviving Camper and Nicholson architects of the 31, the standing rigging was changed from the original through deck backing-plate mounted shrouds to exterior chainplates. Whereupon the hull was reinforced at the new chainplate mounting locations and the deck to hull joint was reworked from stem to stern and a reinforced integral toe rail was worked into the joint design.

This vessel has been outfitted for single-handing with all roller furler sails and includes a Cape Horn Wind Vane.

As of the creation of this listing, upgrades and work on the vessel is on-going and the listing, photos, and price will be updated to reflect this.

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds

• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula
