Interview with Vrit Yongsakul, Group MD, Boat Lagoon Yachting

Representing Princess in Southeast Asia since 1994, Boat Lagoon Yachting is also a distributor of Jeanneau and Sacs, and a Burgess representative. Vrit Yongsakul explains why the dealership invests so much in bringing new models to Asia and how it’s able to offer clients a 360-degree service.

Vrit Yongsakul, Group Managing Director, Boat Lagoon Yachting

Vrit Yongsakul, Group Managing Director, Boat Lagoon Yachting

What are Boat Lagoon Yachting’s biggest strengths?

Our biggest strength is that we invest heavily not only in stock boats – which allows our clients to experience the latest models and see a range of possibilities available to suit their lifestyle and preferences – but also in our after-sales team and large-part inventory due to the scale of our operations and volume of boats.

We wholly own, run and operate our marinas and shipyards, and are active boaters ourselves, so our understanding of boaters’ needs is unique.

In addition, Boat Lagoon Yachting offers luxury charter services for customers who would like to try boating and a dedicated yacht-management division. As such, we offer a unique turnkey service and full boating experience to our clients. We also have an active brokerage department and offer help with resale, allowing owners to upgrade easily as we provide part-exchange.

We continuously challenge ourselves to be the first to provide new experiences to our owners, be it rendezvous gatherings, events in unique places such as the Louis Vuitton event we did in Singapore’s Marina Bay, cruising along the Chao Phraya river in Bangkok, and even tailored cruises in the Mediterranean on our own yachts for our owners.

We also regularly organise Princess demos and dedicated training courses and workshops with both European and local OEM (original equipment manufacturers), shipyards and service suppliers at our own marina and shipyards.

Having operated in Southeast Asia since 1994, what do you think are the differences of the yachting market compared to other parts of Asia or more mature markets like Europe and the US?

The yachting industry in Southeast Asia has been increasing every year. It is still a developing yachting culture where people are traditionally day boaters. In the Mediterranean, US or Australia, boaters will go for longer trips, for three days to a week or even a month.

I do see this culture changing and developing as our clients become more confident in boating and wish to explore more.

How many Princess yachts has Boat Lagoon Yachting sold and which have been the most popular ranges?

We have sold well over 250 new and pre-owned Princess yachts. We are the oldest and largest Princess Yachts dealer in Asia. We are also privileged to be part of the company’s special dealer council, along with the senior board and management of Princess Yachts.

The Y Class of large motor yachts is the most popular range in Southeast Asia, with over 40 new and used yachts sold in Asia within the last few years. These include 15 units of the 78 Motor Yacht, 12 of the Y75 Motor Yacht and 14 of the 72 Motor Yacht.

The F Class flybridge yachts are also popular with our owners and we have sold 12 units of the P60, 10 P64s and six P68s. We’ve even sold four M Class superyachts (starting from 30 metres) in the last few years.

Which are your biggest markets for Princess and why do you think the brand is so popular in Southeast Asia?

Boat Lagoon Yachting operates in five countries – Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Maldives – and our two biggest markets are Thailand and Singapore.

The reason why the brand is so popular is because Princess has a strong reputation of building yachts with good seakeeping and handling, and great volume. As well as offering a strong product that’s in demand, we complement this with first-class after-sales service and care, giving total peace of mind to the end user.

Can you talk about the efforts you’ve made in bringing new models to market and how important it is for clients in Asia to see these as soon as possible?

Our company’s vision is to provide the best service to clients and that includes convenience. We are always the first to personally invest in bringing the latest new yachts to the region.

In 2019, we invested GBP20 million (about US$26.7 million) in a brand-new fleet of Princess models including an R35, F45, F50, F55, F62, F70, Y75 and Y85. This provided buyers with the opportunity to choose their ideal yacht at their leisure and start their boat experience immediately.

We have also previously brought in ‘world premiere’ models, some of the first units in the world, like the popular 75MY, S60, 78MY, Y85, 88MY and many other previous models such as P56, P60, P64, P68 and 72MY.

Furthermore, with the Singapore Yacht Show and the Thailand Yacht Show being two key boat shows in Asia, we feel it is important to have national and regional premieres at these events.

What are your thoughts on the new X95, which has been so popular that it has taken over production in Princess’s South Yard, previously dedicated to the M Class superyachts?

Consumer tastes are always changing. People want to go further afield and have the space to be able to enjoy such adventures. The X Class range offers this. It is uniquely designed and her concept has really captured the market. It is no surprise the shipyard has already sold 13 units of the X95 (by late November).

How important is customisation to your clients?

Customisation is important, but it is also important for us as distributors to make clients aware of what is possible. By knowing our clients, we have been able to offer features such as mahjong tables in place of coffee tables, list karaoke machines as an option, install a whisky cabinet and cigar drawer, and even customise the flybridge with starlights.

For Jeanneau, what are the most popular models with your clients?

The NC and Merry Fisher ranges are definitely the most popular here in Southeast Asia. They are good-quality boats, affordable and offer perfect day cruising, which is what many of our clients are after.

A Sacs Rebel 47 on display at the 2020 Thailand Yacht Show

How does Sacs fit into your portfolio and which types of buyers do these luxury RIBs appeal to?

Sacs is the number one manufacturer for top-end luxury tenders. As we’re in partnership with Burgess, we now engage with clientele looking for yachts from 100ft upwards. When it comes to a tender, they often want something high-end, which is what Sacs offers. So far, we have sold several units to superyacht owners. Sacs is also a great island run-around boat for places like Phuket or for those who may not wish for a traditional flybridge yacht.

Now that you’re well into your second year representing Burgess in Thailand, how is your superyacht business developing?

We are very much enjoying our partnership with Burgess. I believe we complement each other fittingly. We have been fortunate enough to make a number of sales to Asia-based customers, who keep their superyachts both in Asia and elsewhere in the world.

Looking ahead, where are the biggest opportunities for Boat Lagoon Yachting?

The Covid pandemic has certainly increased sales in boating. While travel restrictions are in place, we see this trend continuing. What’s paramount for us is to ensure we can offer our customers great after-sales care and hope they will want to upgrade and stay within the Boat Lagoon Yachting family.

Southeast Asia large yacht sales surge

  • October 25, 2023

Boat Lagoon Yachting announces record sales of new and pre-owned yachts in Southeast Asia, with increasing take-up of larger Princess models.

Boat Lagoon Yachting has reported that sales of 50-120ft motor yachts in Southeast Asia have increased by 40 per cent compared to last year, with new and pre-owned vessels from 75-95ft among the best sellers.

A Princess dealer since it was founded in 1994, Boat Lagoon Yachting is the market leader in Southeast Asia for new and used motor yachts from 75-95ft.

Operating in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Maldives, the company is one of the region’s longest-established and largest luxury yacht importation, distribution and after-sales organisations, also representing Jeanneau and Sacs.

Vrit Yongsakul, Group Managing Director, said sales last year and this year resulted largely from a base of loyal customers upgrading to bigger boats, along with referrals of friends seeking the service assurance of a long-standing local dealership.

“Sixty per cent of our customers are repeat buyers, who trust our fully integrated services such as a complete yachting experience programme comprising dedicated service and aftersales with key factory trained staff and an experienced team, in addition to international-standard yacht management, charter operations through to unique customer care and VIP services,” he said.

“Some clients have upgraded from a 50-footer to Princess’s flagship 95-footers, a size that’s becoming popular in Southeast Asia. We’ve seen particularly high movement at the upper end. Over only the past two years, we’ve seen the sale of four 95ft Princess yachts, with two of the X95 and two of the Y95.

“We’re thrilled to have the ‘world premiere edition’ of the Princess Y95 superyacht in Singapore for the model’s Asia debut. In addition, we were proud to display another unit of our own Princess Y95 for its show debut in the Cannes Yachting Festival.”

Boat Lagoon Yachting also announced that it has sold eight Princess Y85 models this year, making the 85ft flybridge motor yacht the most popular model of its class in Southeast Asia.

Having represented Princess for almost three decades, Boat Lagoon Yachting works closely with the Plymouth shipyard and provides complete support from pre-purchase through to purchase and after-sales.

“The Princess range is particularly suitable for cruising in this region. Along with luxury, the models offer a choice of space configurations, onboard accommodation, cruising range and performance,” Vrit said.

“Owners of the top-end models, 85ft and 95ft, find they can entertain a large number of guests on an elegant yacht that cuts an unmistakable profile out on the water.”

Boat Lagoon Yachting’s services and facilities are fully integrated with the Southeast Asia division of Princess Yachts, offering the Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore-Indonesia axis as a seamless cruising destination, with Thailand as the dedicated sales, service and yacht management centre.

However, Vrit believes clients in Thailand and Singapore, Boat Lagoon Yachting’s two main bases, generally have a different profile.

“Singapore tends towards more of a commercialised lifestyle zone, while the beauty of Thailand’s islands and beaches, so easily reached from Phuket, attracts families and groups, along with the corporate sector.”

8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In

Yacht Clubs and Marinas

FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.

Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan

Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.

Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo

Iloilo Province is home to some of the country’s most beautiful old-world architecture, a flourishing ecotourism industry, and delectably fresh seafood cuisine. What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

boat lagoon yachting

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

boat lagoon yachting

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

boat lagoon yachting

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

boat lagoon yachting

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
