Hanse Unveils the New Hanse 590 Signed Berret-Racoupeau
This summer marks the introduction of the fifth model in the successful current series by Hanse , achieved within just three years: the new Hanse 590, now the largest model, completes the top end of the Hanse range.
In the Hanse 590, the innovative design resulting from collaboration with Berret-Racoupeau ensures outstanding sailing performance combined with a substantial yacht volume, resulting in exceptional comfort within this class. From the diverse interior design options to the generously sized owner’s cabin and the meticulously designed cockpit offering ample space and freedom of movement. Features such as the optional hardtop, the largest in its class, providing shade and protection as needed, the sun lounge on the foredeck, and the spacious dinghy garage with the Smart Tender System behind the expansive bathing platform, make the Hanse 590 equipped with every conceivable amenity for its class.
Like all Hanse yachts , the Hanse 590 is synonymous with swift cruising and effortless sailing, ensuring a safe, comfortable, and easily manageable vessel, particularly when sailing solo, thanks in part to the bow and stern thrusters which simplify docking and maneuvering in tight harbors.
Characterized by the distinctive Hanse chines, elegant silhouette, and reverse bow, the Hanse 590 boasts a striking appearance. Additionally, the refined hull design enhances stability and performance, while the bowsprit allows for optimal sailing performance at all times, ensuring the yacht’s peak performance on the water.
Prior to her world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September, the new Hanse 590 will be officially unveiled in the summer of 2024.

Hanse 460 review: First in a new range
- David Harding
- January 26, 2023
The Hanse 460 is the first in a new range of Hanses. From new designers, she is already a big hit, with over 200 sold and a European Yacht of the Year win to its name. David Harding reports
Product Overview
Price as reviewed:.
For some of us, sailing has always been about the functional and fundamental. We enjoy sailing for sailing’s sake. But today people want so much more from a boat and, in many respects, today’s yachts undoubtedly offer a lot more and the Hanse 460 attempts to do just that.
What you might loosely call the mainstream European builders of family cruising yachts have been following this path for some time, making each generation of designs bigger and plusher than the last. For Hanse in particular, it has been a rapid evolution from the small, basic and functional to the large and luxurious.
This latest Hanse is the first to be designed by Berret-Racoupeau. After the earliest models, which used the moulds of discontinued, slim-hulled Scandinavian designs, every Hanse has been designed by Judel/Vrolijk in what became one of boatbuilding’s most enduring and successful partnerships.
In line with modern trends, each new wave of Hanses has been higher, wider and more voluminous than the last. Founder Michael Schmidt never lost sight of the performance side, however. For all their growing girths and towering topsides, Hanse has always made boats that sail – competitively-priced, high-volume cruisers but with easy handling (self-tacking jibs were used from the early days) and better performance than many of the alternatives.

The Hanse 460 is different. Very different. The first model from a new alliance with the French designers, it promptly won the European Yacht of the Year as the best Family Cruiser for 2022. A Hanse 510 version now follows.
The big question was whether Hanse had managed to do something different while retaining the qualities that its owners had traditionally sought.
At a glance, the Hanse 460 looks sleeker and sportier than earlier models; more angular, with a reverse rake to the bow and a pronounced knuckle running to about half-way aft. In Hanse tradition there are no hard-angled chines but, in this case, a pronounced soft chine towards the stern. In plan view you see full forward sections which, combined with the broad stern, generous freeboard and ample beam, hold the promise of enormous interior volume.

At the other end, a moulded bowsprit projects the anchor clear of the stem and provides an attachment point for an outer forestay which can carry a reaching headsail. Large windows in the topsides help to break up the high freeboard.
Scale those topsides and you’re faced with an expanse of wide, flat deck and coachroof. Moulded bulwarks edge the side decks to help keep feet where they belong should you venture forward when the boat’s heeled. Otherwise what stands out is the uncluttered appearance – lines are led aft beneath separate mouldings – and the plethora of deck hatches hinged every which way, including one that opens to reveal a large bow locker.
There was certainly nothing to complain about in the performance and handling department. We slipped along very nicely on a flat sea in 12-14 knots of wind, clocking around 7.5 knots with the apparent wind at just under 30°, and tacking through around 80° by the compass.

Enjoyable sailing
Weather helm was slight and the load on the wheels increased relatively little if I tried bearing away with the sheets pinned in, the single rudder providing plenty of grip. Provoked in the opposite direction, she coped well when pinched mercilessly and also when thrown into tight spins, only stalling briefly.
At least in the flat water and modest breeze we encountered, the cockpit worked well. In any wind and seaway you would be pleased to have the optional second table to port as a bracing point. At the helm stations you have a comfortable perch outboard of the wheel or, for energetic downwind sailing when you might need both hands, behind it. The Jefa linkage is light and direct, giving a good feel from the rudder. On the starboard side you can wind down the bifurcated backstay when extra headstay tension is needed.

Today’s cockpits are no longer just places from where you control the boat. Controlling the boat in itself is so much easier anyway, especially if – as most owners of the Hanse 460 will – you upgrade to electric winches, electric in-mast reefing and electric furling for the genoa on the outer forestay.
Other push-button options are for the hinge-down bathing platform and the cockpit tables (either side or both), which can be lowered to create large lounging areas. Alternatively there are fixed tables, as we had on the port side. A wet-bar can be added between the helm seats. It’s all part of making the cockpit a multi-function space in which every part can serve a variety of purposes. Cockpit stowage is in the form of a half-depth locker each side and – a first for Hanse – a dedicated liferaft locker right aft to starboard. With the electric-lowering option for the starboard table comes an extra moulded seat pod, which provides readily-accessible shallow stowage forward of the starboard helm and would be good to have for that reason alone.
Portlights and windows flood the saloon with natural light. Photo: HanseYachts/Nico Krauss
Moving about the deck and cockpit, and from one to the other, is easy in good weather. The wide open spaces let you simply stroll around – or lounge if you’re so inclined. Then again, they tend to present more of a challenge when a boat’s bouncing and heeling.
Lifestyle choices
Externally, the hull lines clearly differentiate the 460 from her earlier stablemates, but down below it’s a world apart. It’s certainly a more classy finish than we’ve seen before from Hanse; restrained in tone and a level above what we have become used to. Berret-Racoupeau is one of relatively few yacht design studios to have its own interior-design division.
Stateroom forecabin has generous stowage above and below the bed. Photo: HanseYachts/Nico Krauss
A host of interior layouts is available, from three to five cabins, up to four showers and from six to 10 berths. About the only constant is the presence of twin double cabins in the stern. Otherwise you can have different arrangements in the bow (cabins and heads) and amidships with a long or short linear galley and a bunk cabin or utility room to starboard where our boat had a chart table and heads compartment.
Details include backrests that hinge down in the saloon to provide trays and drinks-holders. You can press a button to lower the table, press another to pop up the TV from its central pod, and settle in for the evening.
Down here it’s all about sight-lines, integrating the different areas so no one feels left out, and ensuring that, as in the cockpit, every part of the layout performs multiple functions. In practice it creates a thoroughly pleasant and remarkably light environment.

Sometimes you come across a boat that makes you realise not only that yacht design has changed irrevocably, but also why it has changed and why it’s not going back. The Hanse 460 is unquestionably such a boat. How the crew lives aboard and moves around, both above and below decks, has clearly been thought about in the context of modern lifestyles. And this boat exudes style. If you like the fundamental design, you will be able to tailor many of the options and details to suit your tastes. A yacht like this is unlikely to slice to windward in heavy weather as comfortably as, say, a first-generation Swan 46, but most people aren’t really interested in that these days. I suspect the new Hanse will prove to be a pretty quick and competent all-rounder nonetheless. Simple sailing? The technology is not remotely simple any more. But with the Hanse 460, the sailing itself is simple and can still be a lot of fun.

This summer, Hanse will launch the fifth model in the successful current series in just three years: the new Hanse 590, now the largest model, rounds off the Hanse range at the top end.
In the Hanse 590, too, the groundbreaking design from the collaboration with Berret-Racoupeau ensures excellent sailing characteristics with an enormous volume of the yacht - and thus a high level of comfort in this class. From the diverse design options below deck to the extremely spacious owner's cabin and the well thought-out cockpit with plenty of space and freedom of movement. From the optional hardtop, the largest in her class, which provides shade and protection when required, to the sun lounge on the foredeck and the large dinghy garage with the Smart Tender System behind the huge bathing platform. The Hanse 590 offers every amenity that is possible in this class.
Like all Hanse yachts, the Hanse 590 stands for fast cruising and easy sailing. This makes the yacht safe, comfortable and fully suitable for single-handed sailing - not least in conjunction with the bow and stern thrusters, which also make docking or manoeuvring in narrow harbours child's play.
The typical Hanse chines, the elegant silhouette and the reverse bow give the Hanse 590 her striking appearance. At the same time, the sophisticated hull design contributes to her stability and performance. Her bowsprit allows her to be optimally sailed at all times, thus ensuring the yacht's optimum performance on the water.
Even before she celebrates her world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September, the new Hanse 590 will be officially presented in summer 2024.

HanseYachts AG: Termination Regulated Share Trade
Hanse Yachts closes first half-year with record figures
New Hanse 360, Space Miracle in 36 Foot Class
Profile of HanseYachts AG
Developed by sailors. Tested on the Baltic Sea. Sold across the world. Since its founding in 1990, HanseYachts AG – which now encompasses six brands – has become one of the biggest manufacturers of seagoing, series-produced sailing yachts and motor yachts . HanseYachts AG went public in 2007 (General Standard); around 23.23% of its shares are currently freely traded. In 2011, Munich-based Aurelius AG became the majority shareholder and currently holds around 76.77% of issued shares.
Second-biggest yacht-builder in the world
In terms of the number of yachts sold worldwide, HanseYachts AG is the second-biggest manufacturer of sailing yachts in the world. In the market for recreational motor yachts, the company is now among the top 10 providers worldwide. Production takes place at the two locations in Greifswald (Germany) and Goleniów (Poland).
Direct access to the Baltic Sea
Direct access to the Baltic Sea allows HanseYachts AG to test its range of sailing yachts and motor yachts under real-life conditions. Each new product undergoes extensive testing before being placed on the market. These test results are instantly and directly incorporated in ongoing product development. New materials and components are tested on water, not just under laboratory conditions.
Some customers travel all the way to the shipyard itself to pick up their new yacht before sailing back home, wherever that may be in the world. A crane carefully positions the sailing yachts, motor yachts on the water for the first time after they leave the production halls. For sailing yachts, the mast is set and all the rigging is installed on site.
Own production sites
Our own production sites enable fast response times and highly efficient manufacturing. The entire GRP production is carried out to the highest standards of craftsmanship by experienced specialists. The production process ranges from the lamination of small parts and the fabrication of hulls using the laying-by-hand technique to weight-optimised vacuum infusion for specialised yacht types.
At HanseYachts AG's headquarters in Greifswald (Germany), all wood and interior components are manufactured in-house. Ultra-modern state-of-the-art equipment featuring CNC milling machines ensures that the parts get cut to the exact millimetre. Highly trained specialists assemble the furniture by hand. The final assembly of the sailing and motor yachts gets carried out in a most cost-effective manner on the production lines.
The production site in Poland The beginnings of the Polish branch date back to 1995 - initially under the name Technologie Tworzyw Sztucznych (TTS) . Since then, yacht construction elements such as hulls, decks and floors have been manufactured here. In 2006, the company joined the HanseYachts capital group. The steadily increasing demand for the products led to the factory being moved to a new location in the Goleniów Industrial Park in Łozienica in 2008. A specially adapted, modern production hall for the manufacture of laminates was built there. As a result, our employees work under safe conditions and at the same time protect the environment. The last few years of our work have been characterised by continuous development. Two warehouses were built in Łozienica, a laboratory and a design studio were expanded.
In 2015 and 2021, we also built two more production halls, where the assembly work for the final finishing of the yachts ready for sale is carried out. Currently, we offer lamination, yacht fittings as well as the assembly of water, electrical and gas installations, engines, navigation and steering equipment and other equipment required for a yacht. Currently, six yacht models of the Dehler, SEALINE and RYCK brands are manufactured entirely in Łozienica. This means that they can be delivered directly from there to the customer or dealer. The dynamic development and the great interest in the products lead, among other things, to a significant increase in jobs.
The year 2022 marks another milestone: as a long-standing member of HanseYachts AG, the company name was changed to HanseYachts Sp. z o. o. to underline its affiliation to the group.
A highly skilled workforce
HanseYachts AG employs an annual average of around 1,500 people. Of these, almost 20% are salaried employees and more than 80% are industrial workers. In the Greifswald region (Germany), HanseYachts AG is one of the largest employers.
World-renowned design offices
HanseYachts AG collaborates with a number of world-renowned nautical designers of yachts. Bill Dixon (Dixon Design), Patrick Banfield (Allseas Design) and judel/vrolijk & co are established names in the world of yachting and lend the various models of the individual brands their own distinctive appearance. In these close partnerships, we develop yachts in line with our philosophy: “Breaking rules. Setting trends”.
Own development locations
One of HanseYachts AG’s biggest strengths is that we have our own development team as well as our own model and mould construction team. A team comprising 40 designers, engineers and technicians, all of whom are consummate masters in their fields and possess many years of experience. Our teams work alongside renowned yacht designers to create sailing yachts and motor yachts with a focus on quality and function – from the interior fittings and deck layout to the engine and air-conditioning system. Two in-house, five-axle CNC mills turn our virtual models into reality and are capable of machining components measuring up to 6 by 16 metres. High quality yacht-building starts by only using the best tools.
As a new design and development centre, the Baltic Design Institute in Szczecin complements the development department at HanseYachts AG's headquarters and offers additional expertise in the sectors of yacht design and structural dimensioning. The team of highly qualified employees has many years of international professional experience in yacht design as well as in the marine industry. The close cooperation of all development instances enables the creation of new, forward-looking products.
Premium suppliers
In addition to the components that we produce in-house, we also enlist the services of premium suppliers. We use engines from Volvo, Yanmar and Mercury; navigation electronics from B&G, Garmin and Raymarine; sails from Elvström and Quantum; heating systems from Eberspächer and Webasto; masts from Seldén and Z Spars; fittings from Harken and Lewmar; and running rigging from Liros. When HanseYachts AG selects its suppliers, three factors are non-negotiable: high quality, reliable deliveries with consistent quality and comprehensive after-sales service for end customers.
Six brands with their own unique characters – united under the roof of HanseYachts AG. Each brand operates independently on the market, but benefits from the pooled development and production technology of one of the world’s leading yacht-builders. Hanse 410 first look: Another mid-size cruiser slots into this competitive market
- March 13, 2024
There appears to be no slowing down of the competition between the major boatyards when it comes to building new mid-size cruising yachts, and the Hanse 410 is yet another to come to market
While 32ft might have been a big boat a few decades ago, 40-42ft is the new normal and the Hanse 410 is another 40 footer coming to market this year that slots into that competitive field.
This development is driven in part by consumers wanting more space and comfort from their coastal getaway, and in part by the economics of boat building making smaller boats harder and harder to build with any kind of profit.
The Hanse 410 then will be going up against the Dufour 41 , Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 410 , Beneteau Oceanis 40.1 and the Bavaria C42 , amongst others.
Up to 20 hatches and windows ensure huge amounts of light and ventilation
So it is that German yard Hanse have pitched their latest new model bang in the middle of a range that spans from the 315 up to the 588.
The Hanse 410, like others of this generation (denoted by the final numeral ‘0’ rather than a 5 or an 8), is designed by Berret-Racoupeau, with a focus on squeezing in as much volume as possible thanks to the very full sections forward as well as aft.
There will be the usual generous headroom, plus hull chines above the waterline both fore and aft, In line with modern trends, to push out the corners of the accommodation space, allowing for double berths to extend into the ends of the hull while remaining almost rectangular.

First look: Dufour 41 – better performance and simpler maintenance
The new Dufour 41 follows hot on the heels of the Dufour 37 in terms of design, focusing on more…
Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 410
Is there a serious cruiser behind the new Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 410's bold looks? Graham Snook went to find out
The theory is that the waterline remains narrow, while giving the hull more form stability when heeled.
Often, the extra volume results in less slamming in waves than you’d have thought, and the extra power compensates for the loss of a fine entry, albeit with a small sacrifice in pointing ability.
Looking at the polars, the self-tacking jib will have you up to 6.5 knots at 35º to the apparent wind with 10 knots over the deck. With a furling offwind sail, you’ll be nudging over 9 knots in 20 knots of true wind on a beam reach – that’s with the standard keel and before you’ve weighed the boat down with cruising clobber.
Thanks to fuller bow sections, the rudder remains more fully submerged when heeled
While the Hanse of old were narrower boats, the brand still prides itself on an enjoyable and rewarding sailing experience, albeit as simple to handle as possible, so this boat still has an adjustable backstay to let you trim the rig, even if all the other controls are taken aft to the helm, ducted through a channel in the cockpit coamings.
Space on deck is vast, with the twin cockpit tables and L-shaped seating. The tables can be lowered to form two big sunpads in the cockpit, while a large bathing platform folds down at the stern. In a bid to offer more sustainable propulsion options, Elvstrom sails made largely from recycled materials are available, as is electric propulsion and methanol fuel cell power generation.
A raft of 18 accommodation layout options includes: a heads in the forward owner’s cabin (or a dressing table and large wardrobe); either one or two aft double cabins, the latter of which turns the port quarter into a large stowage locker accessed from a door aft of the galley as well as from on deck; a starboard saloon settee that can be shortened to accommodate either an aft-facing chart table or an outboard-facing stowage locker beneath a standing chart table.
There’s easy access to the water via a stepped bathing platform
In fact, the only fixed points of the layout are the L-shaped galley and C-shaped saloon seating to port, the starboard heads and shower compartment, and the starboard aft double cabin. It seems odd that the starboard saloon settee doesn’t offer seating at the table, limiting hosting to a cosy six, where a fold-out table would give room for eight; a minor detail. Regardless, prospective buyers will be spoilt for choice.

First Peek at the Brand New Hanse 590 “Small Super Yacht”
The game is afoot in the German town of Greifswald. The German builder Hanse, one of the world’s leading production sailboat builders, has introduced a new flagship model that the German press is calling a “small super yacht.”
Hanse has always worked hard to stay out in front of the competition with innovative designs and sail plans and thoroughly modern build techniques. They can compare in many ways to the boats coming out from Group Beneteau, Bavaria, Dufour and others, but there is something decidedly German in every Hanse yacht.
That promises to show up in spades in the new Hanse 590. So new, the design is not yet on their website. But, the editors at the German sailing magazine de yacht, who no doubt have many friends at Hanse, were given a first look and published a preliminary design review at the end of March. This article will be the 590’s introduction to the North American market so you are getting the very first peek.
A few highlights: The full-cockpit hard top, with a sliding middle section, will offer great protection for the crew and provides an excellent spot to mount solar panels. A dinghy locker has been built into the transom. The rig has Hanse’s customary self-tacking jib augmented by a roller furling reaching sail for extra power; yet, all can be managed from the cockpit.
Down below, the 590 has the accommodations and accoutrements of a super yacht because her hull has so much volume. The owner’s cabin forward is, again, a super yacht feature. And, the saloon is a proper saloon in the traditional sense, with a huge galley, a table that will seat eight or more and a proper nav station.
Sixty feet is big for a cruising couple, but Hanse seems to have created a yacht of this size that is completely manageable. She going to turn a lot of heads when she is launched later this year.

Evo was commissioned by experienced seafarers, who, after owning several high-performance yachts, decided it was time to create a bespoke blue-water cruise for their family. The owners enlisted Van der Valk for the build to ensure premium quality, the Dutch yard says. SFG Yacht Design and Fancy by Dada penned EVO’s sleek exterior, after which Cristiano Gatto Design added more length and angles to the profile. The Italian film also designed the interior. The naval architects at Diana Yacht Design and Ginton Naval Architects also helped refine the design.
Made entirely from aluminum, Evo features a round-bilge, fast-displacement hull that promotes planing. Powered by two MTU engines, the vessel is expected to have a top speed of 24 knots, a cruising speed of 19 knots, and a range of 2,200 nautical miles. Built to ABS class, the yacht will also meet the latest IMO Tier III emissions regulations, meaning it can cruise in protected waters.
“Project Evo is a fine example of how clients can come to Van der Valk with their own exterior designers without having to reinvent the wheel with a new hull, safe in the knowledge that their yacht will excel in terms of performance, speed, and stability,” Bijker adds.
Bigger and better, indeed.
