How do I get to the Cat Ppalu dock?

The Cat Ppalu docks at the Nassau Harbour Club Marina on East Bay Street, right across from the Starbucks. The ride is approximately 30-40 minutes from the airport to the dock. It is not that far but slow down, Mon! You are on island time now. If you need ground transfers while in Nassau, we can assist. You can make the ground transfer arrangements online or call our office at least 3 days prior to your departure. For each pick-up, the cost is $18.00 per person one-way. If you prefer to take a taxi or miss the cut-off date, taxis are readily available at the airport.   The cost will be $40.00 or more if there are more than 2 of you.

What time can we board Cat Ppalu?

You may board after 12:00pm on Saturday. We plan to shove off by 3:00pm at the latest to make the trip from Nassau to the Exumas during daylight hours. We can, of course, stay longer to accommodate later arrivals as this is a charter only vessel. Keep in mind that if it gets too late, then the captain may decide to leave early Sunday morning instead of Saturday afternoon for safety reasons.

What time do we disembark the Cat Ppalu?

The Cat Ppalu returns to Nassau Thursday afternoon, usually by 5:00pm at the latest. We still serve dinner and provide lodging at the dock. This is your night in port so that you can experience some of the local culture. All passengers must disembark Friday by 9:00am.

Will I see sharks while diving on Cat Ppalu?

Yes, Caribbean reef sharks and nurse sharks frequent many of our sites. We normally offer 1 shark feed on each trip. This is the perfect time to see sharks up close and in action!

Seven of the world's best catamaran superyachts.

Are two hulls better than one? If the array of new build and new concept catamarans are anything to go by, it’s a question the yachting industry appears to increasingly be asking.

Celebrity endorsement in the shape of Rafael Nadal has certainly helped raise awareness of the category, but beyond the tennis ace’s custom Sunreef 80 Power , more and more yacht owners are coming to see that cats are worthy of their attention: The twin hull design delivers larger volumes, greater stability, as well as increased efficiency and speed when compared to its monohull equivalent.

Beyond leisure cruising in shallow, tropical waters, today’s class of catamarans are being primed for global expeditions. The category is also shining bright with early prototypes demonstrating how yachting is going green, such as the hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered power-cat tender by America’s Cup team Emirates Team New Zealand.

From classic models to rugged explorers and support vessels to a hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered cat, here are seven stellar twin-hulled vessels that show how versatile the power-catamaran design can be.

Astilleros Armon’s ‘Wayfinder’

star cat catamaran

The second big cat–following the stealth-like 217.2-foot Hodor–in the Incat Crowther ShadowCat series, Wayfinder launched from Spain’s Astilleros Armon in 2021 as a support vessel to a superyacht. It’s already been spotted in the Mediterranean, dutifully playing its supporting role to the mothership. At 223.8-feet long, and with a 45.9-foot beam, the shadow boat has extra storage space for the mothership, a games room and an outdoor area all rolled into one, with a collection of extra features including a helipad, helicopter hanger, spare parts workshop, medical facilities, a flower room and a pickleball court. There is also space for a main crew of 18, with extra space for 14 supplemental crew or service staff.

Silver Yachts’ ‘SpaceCat’

star cat catamaran

In October 2022, SpaceCat emerged from Silver Yachts in Fremantle, Western Australia, the first multihull delivery from the Australian yacht builder behind the naval-styled explorer yacht Bold. Like the yard’s monohulls, the superyacht bears the signature of yacht designer Espen Øino who has described the category as the “SUV” of the sea for its potential to first divide opinion and then perhaps dominate the market. A compact 118.1-foot length hides an impressive 4,306 square feet of space across the tri-deck configuration; the largest being the 2,174 square-foot main deck. The series has been designed with owners who may want to own more than one. “The yachts could be positioned on three main continents; one in Asia, one in the Mediterranean, and one in the Caribbean, avoiding any hassle of repositioning and non-availability to use the vessel,” said the shipyard said in a statement at SpaceCat’ s launch.

Abeking & Rasmussen’s ‘Nurja’

star cat catamaran

When delivered in 2008, the 134.6-foot Silver Cloud stood out for its amphibian appearance and full-width helipad on the upper deck, but what attracted the most attention was her swath (small waterplane area twin-hulled) design, the first time such a concept had been seen in the superyacht fleet. The owner chose Abeking & Rasmussen for the build for a reason. He was impressed by the German yard’s proven success with the swath platform in its military and commercial builds. He believed the stability would offer an antidote to his wife’s seasickness, an assumption that was proven correct. In December 2020, the yacht changed hands and is now known as Nurja .

Sunreef’s 80 Eco

star cat catamaran

At last year’s Monaco Yacht Show, the largest yacht may have been Lürssen’s sleek 378-foot motoryacht Ahpo but, across the port, a catamaran less than a quarter of the size was turning just as many heads. With over 1,700 square feet of solar panels seamlessly integrated into her hull, superstructure, mast and bimini roof, the 80-foot Sunreef 80 Eco is a vision of the future, with fully electric propulsion for silent cruising. Along with smart innovations, including a rainwater collection system for washing down the deck and the ability to use her solar panels to heat up the boiler, there’s also plenty of proof that going green doesn’t mean compromising on luxury: The interiors are finished with sustainable materials, including natural fabrics and salvaged teak to reach the exacting standards of superyacht comfort.

star cat catamaran

Equipped with an electric-hybrid drive system, as well as both solar panels and hydr0-generation technology to top up battery power, the French-built Windelo 50 Adventure can reach both the wilds of Patagonia and the palm trees of the Pacific Islands at minimal cost to the environment. Scratch the surface of its classic catamaran aesthetic for more eco-friendly innovations like a hull constructed from a composite material of basalt and PET foam from recycled plastic bottles. These upcycled materials reduce carbon emissions by almost 50 percent compared to traditional materials. The interiors haven’t been ignored either: It’s a modern, functional design emphasizing sustainably sourced wood. The first of this series earned a special mention for sustainability at the European Yacht of the Year 2022 awards.

Profab Central Engineering’s ‘The Beast’

star cat catamaran

With its thick gray, geometric stripes that stand out against the endless blue of the South Pacific of its home waters, there’s nothing inconspicuous about The Beast . Delivered in 2019 by New Zealand’s Profab Central Engineering, the 128.7-foot vessel is billed as the ultimate adventure charter yacht, equipped with scuba diving equipment, wakeboards, SUPs, a waterbike and even a 42.7-foot sport fishing vessel called Baby Beast. The twin-hull design adds to its personality, says its charter manager, Ben Osborne from 37South in Auckland, New Zealand. “The extra volume allows The Beast to carry larger tenders and more equipment—setting it up perfectly for exploration—style cruising, while not sacrificing on the interior spaces,” he told Robb Report . The interior is styled like a Manhattan bachelor pad and can sleep 12 guests in five cabins.

Silent 120 Explorer

star cat catamaran

Proof that 007-style toys are no longer the sole domain of football pitch-sized yachts, the Silent 120 Explorer’s onboard stash includes a U-Boat Worx Nemo submarine and Xcraft eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft. And, true to sustainable super-spy form, rooftop solar panels slide open to reveal a smartly concealed e-VTOL touch-and-go landing pad. A generous 45.4-foot beam—plus the space saved by its solar and electric propulsion systems—is what makes such cool cruising extras possible on a boat of this size. Another of the new wave of cats designed for carbon-free adventure cruising, this latest project builds on the Austrian company’s previous all-electric launches, such as the Silent 60. The first 120 Explorer is set to hit the water in 2024.

Test: Battle Of The Power Cats

(Published in the May 1998 issue)

We hit the first wave at about 25 mph. The bow rose so high that only a cloud-scattered expanse of blue Florida sky was visible beyond the rail. As we hung in the air, I told myself: You should have backed off the throttle while you had the chance--moron.

Instead, I clutched the wheel, flexed my knees and waited for the inevitable sternum-crunching reunion with the water. But the impact that followed opened my eyes more than it loosened my fillings.

There was a mild shudder, a gentle compression into the water, and before I knew it we were heading right up the face of the next wave. Again I braced myself, and again the impact never came.

That day three years ago was the first time I rode a power catamaran, and I've been a fan ever since.

These multihulled boats have a number of long-known and seldom-disputed design advantages over monohulls. First, catamarans ride softer because they don't have a large, round bottom that slams against the waves. Second, a catamaran's twin hulls focus the buoyancy around the outside of the boat, rather than in the middle, creating greater initial stability. Third, the two narrow hulls generate about one-third as much wetted surface, or drag, making the boat more efficient. And last, the hulls place the engines farther apart, increasing maneuverability.

So why, you might ask, don't we see more catamarans on the water? After that ride, I asked the same question, and received a simple answer: They don't look right. When people buy a boat they want it to look like their image of a boat--a catamaran doesn't.

Despite this consistent consumer resistance, manufacturers have continued hawking catamarans in U.S. marinas. That cat I tested in 1995, the 25 SeaCat, was just one more entry into a boat class of proven sales failures.

But the SeaCat didn't fail. Some say it was the styling--from the side, at least, it looked almost like a typical boat. Some credit the marketing: With its fuel efficiency and soft ride the cat attracted fishermen with small wallets and grand offshore dreams. And some think the catamaran was just a boat design whose time had come.

Whatever the reason, the SeaCat flourished, and today there are at least 15 companies selling power catamarans in this country. These cats range from 14 to 74 ft., although the majority fall between 19 and 33 ft. Last year, Grady White joined the fray with its 26-ft. Tiger Cat, giving the category the legitimacy of a well-respected domestic builder.

In order to get a handle on this fast-growing group of water wagons--to catch the tiger by the tail, so to speak--we gathered four new catamarans and put them through their paces. Although all four are nominally set up for fishing, we found very different boats that together are ready for almost anything.

Comet Pro-Star 20

This catamaran version of the increasingly popular flats boat is probably the most purpose-specific boat in our test. Like any good flats boat, it planes almost instantly and runs in shallow water. Relatively wide, flat hulls give the Comet lift, as proven by her 14-in. standing draft and ability to plane in 1.9 seconds. Meanwhile, a hydraulic jackplate lowers and raises the engine, allowing the boat to run in only 6 in. of water at full throttle.

Along with handsome blue hulls and nonskid decks, the Comet offers topnotch fit and finish. There's plenty of stowage space and recirculating live and release wells. The helm console has enough room for dash-mounted add-on electronics and is easy to reach from the comfortable bench seat.

On the water, the Comet was steady in a chop that would have slowed other flats boats. Trimming it out lifted the bow, making it feel like a high-powered bass boat without the threat of chine walking. Through turns it stayed flat and in control.

Glacier Bay Canyon Runner 26

Glacier Bay has been building power cats for 10 years, so it probably wouldn't agree that the 25 SeaCat popularized the category. Nevertheless, Glacier Bay hasn't exerted the same influence.

Not that its boats aren't worthy. The Canyon Runner was the only displacement-hulled catamaran in our test. And although this hull type sacrifices some speed at the top end, it makes up for it in ride. The boat ran through 3-ft. waves and over 5-footers with an almost eerie stability. What's more, it retained this smoothness in all directions to the sea. In high-speed, hard-over turns, the Glacier Bay stayed in complete control, although it did heel out a bit.

While the boat is set up for fishing, with fish boxes, live wells and rod holders, it makes a good all-around craft. It features quality components and is well-constructed. Still, its best attribute clearly is the ride. As one dealer aptly sums it up: "You just can't get in trouble in this boat."

True to its catamaran heritage, the Seagull can make a bumpy bay seem paved and can sit beam-to in a heavy chop without making you want to feed the fish. But unlike many other cats, the Seagull has a looser and freer side too.

Since it sits so close to the water, the boat feels even faster than it is. Of course, those low sides also mean it'll take some spray in a cross-breeze, but somehow that's part of this boat's charm. There's a little more action in its ride, making it feel as if it's frolicking across the wave tops, and it turns so quickly that anyone not holding on before a sharp turn will probably be swimming afterward.

The high-gloss gelcoat looks great, but the construction and finish are more workmanlike than flashy. Set up as a general-purpose boat, the Seagull skis, fishes, dives and provides some welcome levity.

World Cat 266 SC

SeaCat's owner retired last year, and the new owners renamed the company World Class Catamaran and redesigned the entire line.

With its cuddy cabin and walkaround helm, the company's new World Cat 266 SC is the queen of that line. And the best compliment we can pay it is to say that it seems like a larger boat, both in terms of its amenities and ride.

At speed, it's very sensitive to trim, especially if the engines are not trimmed evenly. But once it's properly adjusted, this boat is fast and makes the chop go away. It backs particularly well (generally, all cats do because there's less resistance) and stays almost perfectly flat during hard-over turns.

Inside, there are double bunks, a freshwater sink and portable head, all finished to respectable standards. These conveniences make the 266 SC great for a weekend getaway or an overnight stay at a kingfish tournament.

Overall, none of these boats disappointed our test team, but don't take my word for it. You've got to experience a power catamaran to believe it. Take one for a test ride, and then you'll understand why, at last, the power cat is here to stay.

The New Cat Class

  • By Lenny Rudow

Lagoon Seventy 8

Power catamarans have always had hardcore fans, and we could all argue for the umpteenth time about whether powercats are better than monohulls. Yawn . The truth is, there’s a relatively small but dedicated group of powercat lovers who will never agree with the monohull crowd. Trying to persuade one or the other to change their minds is akin to locking Rush Limbaugh and Rachel Maddow in a room and saying, “Go.”

A more interesting debate is about what, in any particular catamaran’s design, triggers such dedication. I say particular because one of the great judgmental errors naysayers make is lumping all multihull boats into the same category. Nobody would say all monohulls are alike, yet powercats are often painted with an exceedingly broad brush and then dismissed or embraced on the whole.

Truth be told, whether you’re considering a 40-foot center-console cat with quadruple outboards or an 80-foot cat cruiser with the elegance of a Trumpy, the ability of a designer to take advantage of the twin-hull platform is often the key to the design’s success—or lack thereof.

“The design work on a cat is far more involved than on a monohull,” says Larry Graf, who started off his design career by creating Glacier Bay powercats and, today, designs and builds Aspen Power Catamarans. “With a monohull, you design from the centerline out, then mirror it on the computer and pow —you have a full hull. A typical monohull hull can be done in three to five days. But for a cat, the best shapes are often asymmetric, so each hull has two halves that are not the same.”

And the hull is just the beginning of a cat’s story. Is it easier to design an interior that fits into one hull or into two separate hulls plus a center deck level? That cats have more complexity on the inside is a no-brainer.

However, having the two separate hulls also provides advantages. One is privacy on a level that can’t be matched in any monohull, if a cat’s designer works with the shape of the boat.

The key to harnessing this privacy advantage is the ability to separate staterooms not just with thin bulkheads but instead with entire hulls, or at the very least with head compartments and companionways. In part, this ability contributes to the popularity of powercats in the charter market.

Lex Raas—president of charter and special initiatives at MarineMax, which launched the Aquila line for charter in 2012 with the Sino Eagle Group—says the Aquila 48 illustrates how privacy can be done right on a catamaran.

“The privacy advantage specifically is that the port hull is a full owner’s cabin,” he says. “There are no shared bulkheads. And on the starboard-side, there are two absolutely equal cabins with equal heads and showers between them. You can take two couples with you, and nobody feels that they’re getting the short end of the stick.”

The elimination of shared bulkheads increases privacy quite a bit on that Aquila, but examples become even more stark as you consider larger yachts. One of Sunreef’s newest offerings, the 80 Sunreef Power, for example, can have six staterooms—all separated by full heads or companionways, with no two staterooms sharing a common bulkhead.

The ability to have more staterooms that are more private is in large part a function of beam on a cat, designers say.

“Beam is gained for the whole length of the boat, and the cross-deck provides a huge space,” says Mathias Maurios, a naval architect at VPLP Design in Paris, a firm known for designing twin-hulled yachts. “And while, yes, the individual hulls are narrower than a single monohull body, on the whole, usable space is larger than with a monohull. The width allows for more of the valuable interior and deck space.”

Maurios points to the Lagoon Seventy 8 as an example. “The staterooms are the size of the cabins in a much larger motoryacht,” he says.

The other big advantages many cats can claim relate to seakeeping, speed and efficiency. Again, no two powercats are alike, but a close look at specific models is illuminating. As we reported in Yachting ’s review of the Lagoon Seventy 8, for example, at a 10-knot cruise, the boat has 4,000 nautical-mile transatlantic range—a boast that few engine-driven yachts of the same length overall can make. Smaller cats can also have extreme ranges for their size; consider that the Fountaine Pajot MY 44 can reportedly cruise more than 1,000 nautical miles between pit stops.

“Speed, stability and comfort are the prime words illustrating catamarans,” Maurios says, “and we’ve always believed that multihulls are ideal.”

Aquila 70

Lagoon Sixty 7

When designed for speed instead of efficiency, cats enjoy a different sort of advantage. Consider the Freeman 42LR, a quad-engine, 62-knot center-console. That boat gets close to 1 nmpg when cruising at just under 50 knots. And because the vessel has a compression tunnel—air gets compressed between the hulls at high speed, creating a cushion that softens the blows when striking waves—it can maintain that pace in conditions that would make most monohulls rather uncomfortable, to say the least.

What about those disadvantages the cat haters often point to? The unusual handling characteristics, the need for wider slips to match wider beams, the nontraditional looks and higher initial cost—sure, there are trade-offs. Then again, every vessel has some level of compromise.

So, let the pundit debates rage on. But remember: Power catamarans are just as different and distinct from one to the next as monohulls are, and smart design is the key to harnessing the advantages of the form.

C-Cat 65 first look: elegant, sophisticated catamaran

  • Toby Hodges
  • December 4, 2023

The C-Cat 65 from Comar is a 65ft catamaran designed for cruising, the first example of which is set to be launched in summer 2025

star cat catamaran

Product Overview

Italian yard Comar is adding a 65ft model designed by Enrico Contreas and Luigi Cirillo to its existing range of 37-65ft performance catamarans and 52-100ft monohulls , the new C-Cat 65. Carbon infused hull, deck and bulkheads keep displacement down to 18,500kg, an impressive figure for such a large vessel, while upwind sail area of 232m2 gives an enormous power to weight ratio.

The deck layout takes inspiration from the short-handed racing world and includes raised steering positions each side of the hardtop, where lines for key manoeuvres are led.

There’s also an inside steering position at the front of the saloon.

star cat catamaran

Despite its performance potential this is intended as a comfortable, elegant and sophisticated yacht. The bright, modern interior includes a massive retractable window between the saloon and cockpit that’s engineered to leave virtually as little trace of its presence when open as possible.

To minimise wetted surface area the waterline beam of each hull is only 1.75m (5ft 9in). Yet the owner’s hull of three-cabin boats won’t have the feel of being in a narrow tube thanks to a big athwartships bed that has ample space to walk around its foot.

As well as access from the saloon, this cabin also has a dedicated companionway aft, giving easy access to the port side bathing platform.

Payload is 5.5 tonnes, representing 30% of the light displacement, and the first example is scheduled to launch in the summer of 2025.

Stray Cat is a true blue water performance sailing catamaran from the renowned French boatbuilder, Outremer.  She has had two owners and is an owner’s version layout with three cabins and two heads. The entire port hull is dedicated to the owners for comfortable living. Most noteworthy, Stray Cat is equipped with carbon mast, North 3di sails, and four electric winches.   The rig was surveyed in 2021 and new wire cap shrouds and forestay were installed.

She is fully kitted out for ocean voyaging with Spectra watermaker, Lithium-Ion batteries, 900 watt solar charging system plus hydro generator. Also included is a full electronics package with backup autopilot system, Iridium Satcom and AIS. Her extensive inventory of cruising equipment includes OC Tender (new in 2020) Honda 9.9HP Outboard (new 2018), electric anchoring, two kayaks, etc. All her safety gear is first rate including grab bag, portable watermaker, 2 x EPIRB, liferaft (2017), SOLAS flare kit and much more.

Purchased new in France, she cruised the Med, Caribbean, Bahamas, Tahiti and NZ. Stray Cat was shipped for all ocean crossings except San Francisco to Tahiti and New Zealand to Tahiti.  She shows as a much newer boat.  USA Imported & Tax paid.  Fully found ready for world cruising including charts, tools, cleaning gear, spare parts, toys, linens, and galleyware.  Bring your books and bathing suits, grab some provisions, cast off the docklines and start cruising in French Polynesia.  Or wait four years for a new Outremer….. This is a no-brainer decision.

The Barreau-designed Outremer 49 has become the benchmark yacht for couples and families who have dreams of cruising the world on a performance catamaran. This refreshing design restores the most particular sailor’s feeling about catamarans. These designs sail exceptionally well across an ocean or just daysailing around the islands. The deck layout and sail controls, all of which are led aft to the helm and cockpit, make singlehanded sailing a viable option for deliveries. The daggerboard design provides good windward performance and offers the advantages of shoal draft. The narrow hulls are built strong but light for performance while allowing for well-appointed cabins.

Accommodations:

The Outremer 49 is not a charter cat or waterfront condo. The interior accommodation plan and design are perfect for cruising couples with guests or a family to sail the world. Hulls designed for performance with sufficient space for comfort are the priority, versus massively wide hulls and huge superstructure at the expense of weight and drag. Open spaces are balanced with storage lockers to meet the needs of long-distance voyages and life aboard.   Stray Cat  is a true owner’s version with the entire port hull dedicated to the owner. The starboard hull is for guests or children. The common area, salon/galley/nav station, sits atop the high bridgedeck and is light-filled and inviting.

Décor and design elements are tasteful. Construction details and materials selection make these boats stand up to years of use while allowing access to systems and “behind the scenes” hardware and equipment. Cabinets and interior furniture are surfaced with white laminate and cored to reduce weight. American cherry trim and cabinet doors tastefully contrast the predominantly white surfaces. The cabin sole is a wood-grained Wenge synthetic; wear resistant and with good non-skid properties. Shelves, countertops and tables are fitted with solid Cherry fiddles. Dark wood is inlaid in select fiddles/trim throughout the interior per the designer’s cohesive plan. The overhead is fabricated from white vinyl covered panels and removable to access hardware and wiring. Bulkheads and cabin doors in the hulls are finished in cherry. Hull sides are covered with white vinyl over foam padding. Centerboard trunks and salon overhead are covered with off light brown Ultrasuede.

Fit out and interior hardware  are well-conceived. Cabinet doors positively close with pop-out pushbutton latches. Hinges are euro-styled for full adjustment. Overhead lights are flush mounted and wall switched at space entrances. Task lights are found where needed in the galley, heads and office areas. Flex-arm reading lights are fitted at each berth. 12V and 110V outlets are strategically located through the interior. Toe kicks are found below counters and other furniture. Overhead hatches are fitted with roll out insect screens and blinds.  Stray Cat  has the optional Ocean Air pleated shades fitted on the forward and side salon windows. Bunks (except for the top forward bunk) are fitted with spring boards for comfort and mattress ventilation. Insert panels blackout the large fixed hullside ports for privacy.  Bilge access panels in the cabin sole lift with suction cups.

A key design element of all newer Outremer models is a level and large,  open entrance  from the cockpit to the salon. Two large glass doors slide to each side opening the interior to the cockpit. The sliding glass door locks for security and also locks in an intermediate position. Open one side or both as desired for ventilation and egress. One can cook and clean dishes within easy reach of the sheet winches or helm.

The  salon  area is forward and to port. A U-shaped dinette faces aft.  The table is on piston legs allowing it to be lowered to cushion height.  Storage cabinets are located forward of the seat back while batteries and electrical equipment are below the forward settee. Storage bins are located below the settee ends. A bench seat allows one to sit at the dining table and face forward; a favored location for watch standers to dine while underway. A removable cushion covers a large storage bin in this seat. The cherry table folds in half uncovering a smaller cherry-topped cocktail table to starboard.  Two large opening ports forward adjacent the mast base provides ventilation. An open shelf with catchment cubby is outboard of the settee to port and a 12v TV provides entertainment options.

The  up-galley  runs the full width of the aft bridgedeck. The countertop is beige-flecked Corian and fully fiddled. From starboard, an overhead dish storage cabinet sits up high, forward of the helm. A three-burner stainless steel gas cooktop sits in the countertop. A rail with pot clamps is fitted. Well inboard, a Franke double stainless steel sink is hung under the counter. Single lever mixer with pull out spray nozzle serves the sinks.  Also fitted is a filtered drinking water faucet and salt water faucet. Corian inserts cover the sinks and increase counter space when desired. A small round Corian cover lifts to deposit small items directly into the trash bin. Beneath the galley counter to starboar is a large pantry locker with shelves. The gas oven inhabits the undercounter space beneath the stove. A pot/pan storage cabinet is beneath the stove. Double doors open to the under sink storage area. Another cabinet door opening inboard accesses the trash bin area. Across the cockpit entrance is a second counter/storage area. A cabinet with shelves sits atop the counter outboard. Beneath the counter and inboard are three small open shelves; ideal places for “quick grab” items. The front opening fridge and freezer are outboard to port beneath the counter.

  • Stainless steel three burner gas stovetop with safety rail and pot holders
  • Eno gas oven
  • Isotherm stainless steel front opening refrigerator
  • Isotherm stainless steel front opening freezer
  • Francke stainless steel galley sinks measuring 15 1/2″ x 13 1/2″ x 7″ deep and 12″ x 6 1/2″ x 5″ deep
  • Portable 110V induction burner
  • Filtered drinking water faucet
  • Salt water faucet

In an ideal location, out of the way, with excellent visibility and just a few steps from the cockpit is the forward facing  navigation station . When offshore and clear of traffic, one will be able to stand a reasonable portion of their watch here due to the excellent visibility. This desk serves equally well as an in-port office. The very comfortable black plastic/mesh office chair swings out on a stainless steel mount. The L-shaped navigation console and chart table is “command central” for navigation, electrical system control/monitoring and communications. The cherry chart table has a hinged top nav tool drawer. The electronics console above the chart table, below the windows, is faced with black vinyl. A flex-arm red-white “touch on” light illuminates the chart table. To port in the console is the Mastervolt EasyView panel with tank and battery monitors, nav light indicator/mimic, and 12V outlets. Moving to starboard is the A/C power section. Communications and navigation electronics are further outboard and to starboard. A shelf for handheld VHF’s and a 110V outlet is outboard along the starboard cabin side. The stereo is mounted inboard closest to the dinette. A drawer sits above a cabinet with shelves located to starboard of the chart table.

The entire  port hull  is set aside for the owners. A sliding privacy door closes this hull from the salon. A companionway ladder with three Wenge treads is removable to access an emergency escape hatch. At the ladder bottom along the outboard hull side are two narrow storage shelves running from the daggerboard housing to the stateroom door. With the sliding door closed, a tall hanging locker is visible inboard in the passageway. Forward and opposite the daggerboard casing are additional storage cabinets.

The  owner’s head  is all the way forward through a locking privacy door. Furthest aft and inboard, a vanity with designer sink, single lever faucet, storage cabinet below, and backlight mirror rival what one would find at home. The electric sea or freshwater flush head is forward of the vanity area. An opening overhead hatch nicely ventilates this space and narrow hull side shelves are fitted the inboard and outboard hull sides. A large stall shower is forward of the head area. Shower nozzle with hose and holder and a shower curtain are fitted.

  • Raritan Marine Elegance electric fresh or salt water flush head in owner’s hull (new 2020) and fitted with holding tank

The  owner’s stateroom  is aft in the port hull. A queen-sized bed is oriented fore and aft.  Storage space is located below the bunk. An open shelf runs along the hull side at bunk level outboard between the door and bunk. An opening port is aft of the bunk, opens to the transom and is sheltered by a transom step allowing it to be open in wet weather for ventilation. Inboard and forward of the bunk is a mirror, hanging locker, and upholstered dressing seat with bin storage. Inboard of the bunk are two open shelves and three open faced storage cubbies. A cabin fan is fitted for assisting air flow.  A 12V TV is mounted on the bulkhead facing the head of the berth.

The starboard hull is optimized for multiple guests. A  forward stateroom  has a very flexible sleeping arrangement. A lower double berth is fitted with a split mattress. A single bunk inboard, up high can be used for storage or berthing extra crew and guest. A narrow hull side shelf is outboard. A hanging locker is inboard with open shelf above. Top loading storage is beneath the lower berth. An opening overhead hatch, fixed hull side port outboard, opening hull side port inboard, overhead recessed lights and reading lights complete this stateroom.

Proceeding aft from the forward stateroom, the  guest head  is located inboard of the daggerboard trunk and entered through a locking privacy door. A manual flush toilet is aft and a designer sink with single lever faucet is inboard. An opening hull side port is behind the sink. A mirrored door medicine cabinet is above the sink and flanked by backlight accent lights. Aft and inboard are two open storage shelves and a closing storage locker with shelves.

  • Jabsco manual flush toilets with holding tank in guest hull

Inboard and aft of the port hull companionway is the  guest shower.  Separating the shower and head compartments is a wonderful idea, allowing different guest simultaneous use.  This shower is closed with a locking privacy door.  An opening hull side port is inboard. A linen storage locker with hinged door is up high and aft along the hull side.

At the aft end of the port hull the  aft guest stateroom  is well located for sleeping underway or in-port. A queen-sized berth with spring boards is oriented fore and aft.   A split mattress helps access the storage space below the berth.  A hanging locker is forward and inboard, above a dressing seat. Adequate space aft of each engine allows one to work on the engines, steering gear, and accessories. Deck & Hull:

Stray Cat has a white gelcoat hull with white deck and superstructure. White is the easiest color to maintain, especially in the tropics and it reflects most of the sun’s energy which minimizes heating of the interior and stays cooler underfoot. The bottom was last painted in April of 2021 in New Zealand.  The propellors were coated with Prop Speed at this time.  There are three fixed portlights on each outboard hull side. Round, clear escape hatches are beneath each hull companionway ladder inboard. Small opening ports in the hull are installed in the heads, and shower stalls.

Boarding from dinghy or dock is easiest from the open, gently sloping sterns where wide steps make deck access easy.  The bow locker access ladder fits into stern mounts for use as a swim ladder.  A transom hot/cold shower is also on the starboard hull. Engine room access is through the third step up on the transom. Stainless steel stern puspits and stanchions with cable lifelines keep crew securely on deck . Deck and cabintop non-skid is molded in and easy to clean. The wide side decks lead forward to two large trampolines. A liferaft cradle is fitted into the aft/port corner of the trampoline allowing deployment from above or below. The anchor windlass is mounted just forward of the mast and the chain runs forward to the anchor roller mounted in the centerline gangway between the trampolines. An aluminum passarelle mounts flush in the deck just to starboard of the anchor chain on the centerline.

Copious amounts of deck storage with standing headroom is found in the bow lockers.  Access is through 24” by 24” Lewmar deck hatches. Removable stainless -steel ladders with teak treads and LED lighting are fitted in these lockers.  Additional deck lockers are on either side of the mast.

The cockpit is a key highlight of any cruising catamaran.   Access is from both side decks via a molded step.  A fiberglass top and roll-up canvas mesh and eisenglas side curtains fully enclose the cockpit.  There’s ample space for a dozen friends to comfortably socialize in this space for an afternoon sail or cocktail hour. The cockpit seats conceal additional storage for life jackets, cleaning supplies or other deck equipment. The composite cockpit table is hinged on centerline and folds out of the way when desired. Forward and to starboard is the steering station.

Manufacturer Provided Description

New for 2018, Leopard Catamarans is excited to announce that we have made some enhancements to the successful Leopard 40.

Now with over 110 units produced, the Leopard 40 was the first of the Leopard Range to embrace the innovative layout with a forward facing galley, something that has now become a staple on the newer Leopard models. Taking into careful consideration the feedback that we received from our customers and owners, the 2018 model of the Leopard 40 has been given an even more spacious owner’s cabin, with some additional upgrades.

Continuing in the pursuit of innovation while taking into consideration customer and owner feedback, the 2018 model of the Leopard 40 now features aft cabin reconfigurations that offer more space below for added comfort.

The redesigned aft cabins now boast semi-island berths, access steps, concealed strip lighting under shelves, berths, and ceiling fixtures, and more overall space than the previous Leopard 40. The owner suite desk and storage units were intelligently rearranged within the suite to allow for a more refined layout. This new layout further expands upon the open air concept of the Leopard Catamarans line.

The owner suite desk and storage units were intelligently rearranged within the suite to allow for a more refined layout. This new layout further expands upon the open air concept of the Leopard Catamarans line.

The port aft cabin also underwent the same reconfiguration less the owner cabin desk arrangement.

Staying true to our legacy of open concept designs, we were able to accomplished this renovation without compromising any interior living space, one of the most loved features of the Leopard line. The Leopard 40 still offers more interior living space than other catamaran of similar size, and no other yacht in this class of sailing catamarans boasts the speed, agility, or blue water performance that the Leopard 40 can.

We take pride in our happy customers

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Andrew Hodgdon was our broker when we bought our 2018 Lagoon 450F in Antigua in April 2922. He provided great service and was very attentive to our needs. We would highly recommend Andrew and the Multihull Company.

NE1 Here ever heard of Ocean Star Catamarans?

  • Add to quote

There is one in the neighborhood around the corner from me that I thought about looking into purchasing, but I cant find any info on them.

nobody?

its almost this exact same boat http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1578146/0

manintheboat

haven't heard of them before. By the looks of the pics on the yachtworld ad, it is a planing hull. Depending on the condition of the hull and engines, it would be worth a look.

What makes it a planing hull?

You can tell the difference between planing hulls and displacement hulls by looking at the backs of the sponsons at the stern of the boat. Displacement hulls as well as semi-displacement hulls have sponsons that are rounded at the bottom. On planing hulls, the bottom of the sponsons are flatter with a very shallow v. Here are some examples. Pic #1 is an old Glacier Bay 22' which was their only full displacement hull. Pic #2 is a newer Glacier Bay 22'. I believe that the newer 22' is actually some form of semi-displacement. Pic #3 is a sport cat, which below the water line is identical to early models of World Cat and later models of Sea Cat (post 1997). This is a semi displacement hull. In these 3 pics it is easy to notice the rounded shapes of the bottom of the sponsons. In pic 4 you will see the difference in the sponson bottom in this Pro Kat. It is flatter with a slight v. Of course sponson shape is not the only criteria in determining what type of catamaran you are looking at, but it is the quickest way to figure out what you are looking at. You will also notice that the Glacier Bays also have thinner sponsons with more space between them than the sport cat (semi) and pro kat (planing).

Nice info manintheboat. Thanks for taking the time!

Ocean Stars were made in the early 90s. Pro Sports bought their molds when Ocean Star went out of business, redesigned the liner, and this became the ProKat 26 which was their first cat. So from the rubrail down, the early years ProKat 26 is the same as the Ocean Star 25.

SaltNLine

I've never been on one(nor any cat for that matter), but I did have a fairly long conversation with a couple that owned one at the Port A Harbor. We were pulling out and they were putting in, so I asked them about the cat performance. Long story short, they said that they had done their research and ended up choosing this hull. I can't remember exactly why, but they had owned the boat over a year and loved and bragged on it a bunch. Every time I see one for sale, it reminds me of how happy they seemed to be with theirs. Other than that conversation, I've never heard anyone talk about them.

Thanks manintheboat.

I own a 2005 2200WA (WalkAround) ProKat with Twine Yammaha F115s. and am pretty happy with it. Although, I havn't owned it that long, and have only been in 3-4 ft seas a couple of times. If I can answer any questions, let me know. -Gary Long

Rosatom starts production of rare-earth magnets for wind power generation

Rosatom starts production of rare-earth magnets for wind power generation

T VEL Fuel Company of Rosatom has started gradual localization of rare-earth magnets manufacturing for wind power plants generators. The first sets of magnets have been manufactured and shipped to the customer.

In total, the contract between Elemash Magnit LLC (an enterprise of TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom in Elektrostal, Moscow region) and Red Wind B.V. (a joint venture of NovaWind JSC and the Dutch company Lagerwey) foresees manufacturing and supply over 200 sets of magnets. One set is designed to produce one power generator.

“The project includes gradual localization of magnets manufacturing in Russia, decreasing dependence on imports. We consider production of magnets as a promising sector for TVEL’s metallurgical business development. In this regard, our company does have the relevant research and technological expertise for creation of Russia’s first large-scale full cycle production of permanent rare-earth magnets,” commented Natalia Nikipelova, President of TVEL JSC.

“NovaWind, as the nuclear industry integrator for wind power projects, not only made-up an efficient supply chain, but also contributed to the development of inter-divisional cooperation and new expertise of Rosatom enterprises. TVEL has mastered a unique technology for the production of magnets for wind turbine generators. In total, the contract between Elemash Magnit LLC (an enterprise of TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom in Elektrostal, Moscow region) and Red Wind B.V.

These technologies will be undoubtedly in demand in other areas as well,” noted Alexander Korchagin, Director General of NovaWind JSC.
