The launch of the Steeler 61S Electric is a watershed moment for yachting.
Designed by Vripack and built by Steeler, it is the world’s first electric fully loaded steel trawler for a sustainably-forward, live aboard owner.
At 18.6m in length, the Steeler 61S falls into the pocket yacht category. Delivered in the summer of 2022, it is the Norwegian owner’s second Steeler of a similar size. But this time, he wanted his yacht to be full custom, electric and double the volume. Of utmost importance was an open plan, single level, supersized living area, which Vripack achieved by eliminating the side decks.
“A key stipulation from the owner was to ensure the main living area fell on one level,” says Bart Bouwhuis, co-creative director at Vripack. “He was really focused on creating an architectural style home at sea, and with 80% of the interior given over to his living space, that’s what the Steeler 61S provides.”
The full-beam layout, which extends from the swim platform forward, gives the owner full command of the saloon, galley and master bedroom on a single level middle deck. Stretching over the entire length from fore-to-aft, without any stairs or height differences, it provides a waterline connection to the outdoors.
“He was really focused on creating an architectural style home at sea, and with 80% of the interior given over to his living space, that’s what the Steeler 61S provides.”
On the top deck, the wheelhouse enjoys an asymmetric helm close to the starboard door. It allows the owner – who self-pilots the boat – to step outside and look over the edge. Likewise, the aft cockpit with a fold-down transom hatch bleeds directly into the main salon. This allows for direct access on and off the tender, while mounted fendering make the boat super practical when mooring and docking. On the split-level lower deck, there are two guest cabins with a shared bathroom.
On taking delivery, the owner enjoyed a shakedown voyage around Holland before heading up to his homeland of Norway to cruise the fjords. In true Viking style, there is a (heated) plunge pool on the foredeck, while the interior takes on a Scandinavian vibe. Understated cabinetry and joinery provide a framework to the great outdoors, with a floating staircase and slatted wall panels that shine natural light into the interior and allow guests on the main deck to maintain a connection with the helmsman.
“The Steeler 61S Electric gives me all the physical comfort of a noise and vibration-free home along with the emotional comfort and warmth of being amongst nature at sea,” says the owner. “I’ve waited a long time for a sustainable liveaboard boat, and the Steeler 61S more than delivers.”
Sustainable materials, such as steel, wood, leather and composite teak decking, give a nod to the owner’s determination to employ a lighter carbon footprint, though the biggest sustainability breakthrough lies with the boat’s propulsion and slow boating efficiency. Though equipped to run a 75kW diesel generator, the Steeler 61S Electric is also equipped with a 90kW electric propulsion motor and can run on shore power.
“The owner was determined to have the most sustainable boat possible, and one that can adapt as battery technology develops,” says Hans Webbing, owner of Steeler Yachts. “To date, the owner regularly enjoys eight hours of continuous sailing at 5 knots on batteries alone, with normal energy consumption onboard and without needing to engage the diesel genset.”
When cruising at 6 knots, the boat averages a 2000 nautical mile range. Solar panels and windmills mounted on the roof help to feed the 184kWh battery pack.
“I have sailed 2000nm without using more than 40kW on the electric drive line,” says the owner. “Added to that is the special feeling of cruising in total silence for hours when there is no wind at all. It’s like a new way of moving at sea where you blend in with Mother Nature.”
The high quality live aboard trawler features an integrated crane on the upper deck for easy deploy of the tender. There is also a large practical storage box for the owner’s mountain bikes and a second hatch under the aft deck to store kayaks. Providing safety, stability, strength and durability, the Steeler 61S Electric is fully prepared for the future of boating, including permanent stays on board.
“The owner is a passionate boater who truly believed in his own vision,” says Bouwhuis. “The Steeler 61S Electric is no ordinary boat, but one that truly gives him the comfort of a land-based home on water.”

Eegle 20m first look: World’s first electric trawler yacht takes on diesel rivals
- Electric boats
- Top stories
The Eegle 20m looks set to be the first production electric trawler yacht and it has the speed and range to rival its diesel-powered counterparts...
Silent Yachts may have led the way with its electric cruising catamarans but now a Swiss entrepreneur is hoping to appeal to monohull enthusiasts with the first battery-powered trawler yacht , the Eegle 20m.
Designed by Spanish naval architects Bravo Yacht Design, whose previous clients include Rodman , Horizon and Nuva Yachts, it is a 65ft (20m) swift trawler yacht with a top speed of 20 knots and a range of 80nm in electric boat mode.
For longer journeys, a petrol-powered generator extends the range to over 1,000nm at its normal cruising speed of 7.5 knots. The first boat is already in-build at French yard Martinez Construction Navale with an expected launch date next year.

According to lead designer Tia Simo, the trawler style is particularly well suited to electrification. Its shallow keel allows all of its 600kWh lithium ion batteries to be installed below the water close to the centreline.
This low centre of gravity makes for an extremely stable design, which keeps roll to a minimum and makes the standard fin stabilisers even more effective.
The four compact 150kW motors also take up far less space than big diesel engines and are packaged below the tender garage floor.
No need for an engineroom as the motors and batteries fit beneath the floor
With no complex cooling systems or daily engine checks to worry about, there is no need for a conventional engineroom, freeing up almost all of the lower deck for accommodation.
Each pair of motors is linked to a single gearbox and shaft. In displacement mode, only one motor is running on each shaft but for shorter bursts both motors are engaged to push it into semi-planing mode.
To make the most of this, the hull has been tuned to be at its most efficient at either 7.5 knots or 18 knots.
Shallow keel is ideal for battery location below the water
The garage itself houses the 50kW petrol range extender as well as a pair of Jet Skis or a single larger tender.
The reason for specifying a petrol rather than diesel generator is partly because of its smaller dimensions and quieter running but also because its 1,000-litre fuel tank can be used to refill the Jet Skis as well.
The final part of the equation is an array of solar panels on the flybridge hardtop and wheelhouse roof capable of generating up to 9kW.
Petrol range extender shares its 1,000 litre fuel tank with jetskis
This is enough to propel the Eegle 20m at a modest 3.5 knots on solar power alone, although realistically it will be used in tandem with the batteries to extend the all-electric cruising range beyond 80nm and top-up the batteries when at rest.
The batteries can also be recharged using shore power, with the time taken depending on the number of available sockets and rating of the power supply.
With no engineroom eating into lower deck space, there is room for a larger than normal full-beam owner’s suite towards the aft end of the hull with a separate dressing room, study area and bathroom.
Vast master suite has a dressing room, study and bathroom
This still leaves space for two further doubles amidships and a VIP suite in the bow. The other unusual feature of the design is a full-beam saloon that spreads across the space usually occupied by the side decks.
The extra width makes for a very spacious main deck that’s all one level with a curved breakfast bar next to the aft galley, a generous lounging area amidships and a twin helm station forward.
It has all been left open-plan to maximise sightlines and make the most of the 360-degree views. A door next to the helm gives access to the foredeck but it’s not entirely clear how you’d deal with fenders or carry the lazy line forward when mooring stern-to.

The man behind the new Eegle brand, Swiss entrepreneur Adrien Antenen, made his money in recycling plants and wants to use his expertise in sustainability to launch a new range of environmentally friendly electric craft.
He commissioned the design from BYD and is financing the build of the first boat with a view to making it a full production yacht. The finished boat will be priced at around €2.5million ex tax.
Tia Simo, lead designer of the Eegle 20m, who studied naval architecture at Southampton University, told MBY : “We share the same idea as the client.
“We have to push to create yachts which are environmentally friendly. If we take care of our seas, we will be able to enjoy it in the future.”

7 Eco-Conscious Yachts That Are Changing the Future of Boating, From Zero-Carbon Catamarans to Hybrids
Pure-electric trawlers and hydrogen-powered sailing vessels sound like sci fi, but they'll be on the water soon..
Yachting and sustainability may sound like a paradox, but we’re steadily seeing the marine world embrace eco-change. For the yachting world, there are an increasing number of ways to boat with a lower carbon imprint. From electric-diesel hybrids to zero-carbon catamarans powered by alternative fuel sources, here is a closer look at the newest eco-conscious yachts on the water—as well as several concepts that will be on the market in the next year, and a sailing vessel that helped start the emissions-reduction trend among superyachts.
Azimut Seadeck
Having the world’s largest yacht builder embrace sustainability promises to exert pressure on hundreds of smaller builders around the world. When the three-model Azimut Seadeck series is launched, the combination of complementary emissions-reducing technologies promises to be a major milestone for yachting.
“This is the most efficient yacht ever designed by Azimut,” said Federico Lantero, head of Product Design at Azimut/Benetti, at an event announcing the series. “We’ve identified the most recent technologies over the years, so we sat together said let’s raise the bar once again. Let’s push these technologies to the limits. It’s been like assembling a big puzzle.”
The Italian shipyard promises above-average efficiency at a wide range of speeds: The official estimates predict an emission reduction of 40 percent, thanks to Seadeck’s diesel-electric hybrid systems, lightweight carbon-fiber superstructure, solar panels, and other energy-absorption solutions.
Monaco-based designer Alberto Mancini, who penned the exterior, teamed up with other Italian designers Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez, who completed the sleek interior design. Thun and Rodriquez infused the interior with the newest sustainable materials, including cork, which they describe as the “best alternative to teak.”
The concept of Seadeck’s large open aft section—dubbed “Fun Island,” follows the success of the extended deck of sister builder’s Benetti Oasis. That design was a game-changer in its wellness-outdoor living approach. Azimut will release the Seadeck models in the next 20 months, starting with the Seadeck 6 in early 2024.
Alva Yachts Ocean Eco 90 H2
In the past couple of years, German catamaran and sailboat builder Alva Yachts has turned heads with its innovative solar catamarans. But now it’s pushing boundaries farther with the announcement of what it’s calling “the first zero-emissions superyacht catamaran to run without fossil fuels.”
The Ocean Eco 90 H2 is a special 90-foot version of the Ocean Eco 90 series, the shipyard’s flagship model. It comes in two versions: full electric and hybrid diesel-electric. The new model is the company’s first venture into hydrogen. Dubbed a “fuel-less superyacht catamaran with wings,” the H2 was requested by an existing Alva owner. It is powered only by sustainable sources, including the sun, wind, electric energy, and hydrogen fuel cells. The company’s signature solar cells generate up to 40kWp of power while twin performance electric motors give power, with the aid of the Ayro Oceanwings wind-propulsion system.
Oceanco ‘Black Pearl’
The world’s biggest sailing superyacht— Black Pearl —is also the most sustainable boat on water. Energy is saved at every turn on board the 350-foot yacht, from the HVAC system to three carbon-fiber masts, striking black DynaRig sails and aluminum superstructure that combine to make the Oceanco yacht lightweight and efficient. Controllable pitch propellers feed power back into the yacht via a pair of shaft generators providing enough power to support the yacht’s hotel load. Equipped with battery banks and a waste-heat recovery system, the gigayacht is capable of sailing across the Atlantic using only renewable energy.
Sunreef 80 Eco Marie-Joseph
Formula One champion Fernando Alonso so enjoyed his Greek charter aboard the Sunreef 80 Eco Marie-Joseph last summer that he now has a Sunreef 60 Eco in build. Equipped with electric engines, Marie-Joseph is fitted with nearly 1,800 square feet of solar panels integrated into the yacht’s composite structures, including the mast, boom, superstructure and hull sides. It’s enough to generate up to 45.5kWh, which leaves the deck areas free for guest enjoyment. In addition to the yacht’s “solar skin,” the vessel also has a hydro-generation system, which recovers energy from the propellers as well as high-efficiency batteries.
Steeler 61S Electric
Designed by Vripack and built by Steeler, the 61-foot Steeler 61S Electric is a full custom electric trawler built for a liveaboard owner. Sustainable materials, such as steel, wood, leather and Flexiteek decking, give a nod to the owner’s determination to have a lighter carbon footprint—though the biggest sustainability breakthrough lies with the boat’s propulsion and slow-boating efficiency. Though equipped to run a 75kW diesel generator, the Steeler 61S Electric is also equipped with a 90kW electric motor and can run on shore power. In true Dutch style, solar panels and windmills mounted on the roof help feed the 184kWh battery pack.
Newcastle Marine ‘Safira’
When it comes to sustainability, every little bit helps. Powered by azipod drives, which provide 20 percent more efficiency than conventional shafts, the 129-foot Safira can also run on 15-percent biodiesel. The boat is fitted with LED lighting and good insulation, which allows for smaller generators and reduced fuel consumption. Environmental considerations extend to the choice of materials as well, with reclaimed oak, remnant stone and Esthec—a synthetic replacement for teak—being used for both cabinetry and exterior decks.
Rossinavi ‘No Stress’
Italian designer Enrico Gobbi’s latest project comes in the form of Rossinavi’s first hybrid yacht. Delivered earlier this month, the 169-foot, full-aluminum sports yacht, No Stress , is powered by two MTU 16V diesel engines and two electric motors. In electric mode, the dual power system is managed by an artificial intelligence (AI) system that monitors fuel consumption. No Stress forms part of the Italian shipyard’s aim to develop boats with BluE technology. In addition to more environmentally-friendly cruising, the inclusion of AI means the owners “can enjoy the electric experience on board to the fullest,” said Rossinavi’s COO Federico Rossi, in a statement.
The Italian yard recently launched another hybrid-electric “BluE” concept called Infinity , a sailing yacht with an exterior by Fulvio de Simoni. The 138-footer has solar panels that can be stored so that yacht can navigate in full-electric mode for 90 percent of an average day. De Simoni also penned Rossinavi’s Sea Cat hybrid cat, which is currently under construction.

Boat Overview

STEELER YACHTS is proud to introduce the 61S Electric, the world’s first fully electric and thereby seaworthy prestige motor yacht. The triple decker ‘Flat floor Panorama Concept’ also adds the title of most spacious motor yacht in all its length. What more proof is needed that ultra-comfort really can go hand-in-hand with sustainability? This is a truly unparalleled combination.
The STEELER 61S Electric is a one of a kind motor yacht. Built according to our ‘single level living’ concept awarded European Powerboat of the Year. We have pulled out all the stops in accommodation, comfort and luxury, to convince even the most discerning watersports enthusiast that a water-borne villa really does exist under the 20m ship length.
Minimal ecological footprint. But let’s start with the unique drive technology of the 61S Electric. We all know that the days dominated by fossil-fuelled ships engines are coming to an end. Instead, we are seeing bio-fuels, the possibility of hydrogen and most certainly electro-motors. While such progress may not be everybody’s cup of tea, it can certainly do no harm. On the contrary. The dimensions and weights are smaller than those of combustion engines, while their power continues to reach new heights. Batteries have become lighter and stronger with greater charging capacity and therefore quicker charging times. The costs of charging batteries are now also attractive, and even free of charge in some ports (in Norway for example)!
Furthermore, an electromotor powered by a generator is considerably more efficient than a conventional diesel engine. Even during the charging period for the batteries therefore, the 61 S Electric is more economical than a traditional diesel engine.
With today’s state of technology, there is no other motor yacht with a more limited ecological footprint than the STEELER 61S Electric.
The engine space of the STEELER 61S Electric contains a state-of-the-art drive system, comprising a lithium-ion powered electromotor. The battery sets comprise 18 containers, each with 16 cells, sufficient for an action radius of 4 hours’ sailing. Out on the ocean waves, a diesel generator provides the power. The batteries are charged in two hours, so that the generator only needs to work two hours during a full 10-hour sailing day. The 61S Electric also features solar panels for a permanent and natural power supply.

The batteries are charged in two hours, so that the generator only needs to work two hours during a full 10-hour sailing day. The Attétude also features solar panels for a permanent and natural power supply.
As for the design, the concept is by Steeler Yachts while the exterior and interior design is by Vripack. The interior is comfortable and has contemporary decor sure to appeal to a wide spectra. The yacht is believed to have a three cabin layout being able to sleep six with a twin and double on the lower deck and a forward double V-berth. Despite its appearance from the exterior the vessel is a tri-deck. For more information: Steeler Yachts Wheermaten 16, 8331 TL Steenwijk www.***************** ***

The latest new innovation to the S-design portfolio, Steeler Trawlers are setting new standards for adventurous yachtsmen looking for fun, speed and comfort.
The Steeler trawler experience
Trawlers have a magical effect, inspiring a sense of adventure among those who love to explore the waters. In the past, these trawlers were wooden boats sailed by men of steel who knew that reaching the best fishing grounds quickly was the key to success. But just as modern industrial trawlers have developed into a very different kind of vessel, so too have the versions made for more leisurely pursuits
These pleasure trawlers are still associated with fishing, adventure and a no-guts, no-glory mentality. However, while owners are among the most steadfast, dedicated and non-conformist of yachtsmen, most trawlers on offer these days are anything but fast and adventurous.
A fresh wind
All that’s about to change after a father-and-son team came to Steeler asking us to create a trawler yacht that we didn’t build at the time. We do now… And the results are impressive.
Superyacht quality
Apart from the demands related to cruising and fishing, this new 65-foot Trawler had to breathe premium Dutch quality and design. Examples include a bespoke interior, the ultimate gloss rate of the coating and an extreme level of detail in the technical installation. The result is a luxury trawler that also meets Steeler’s ambition to fuel and strengthen the reputation for excellence of Dutch yacht building.
Other key aspects of the new S-design Trawler line include:
- Low centre of gravity translates into maximum stability
- Absence of bow wake at all speeds results in minimum resistance
- Higher speeds with up to 40% less fuel consumption
- Minimum spray, dry cruising
Steel and aluminium
The first 65 S-design Trawler has a strong, light and low-maintenance aluminium construction. Steeler wouldn’t be Steeler if we didn’t now up the ante even further by catering for clients who would like to have a trawler in steel. The Long Range version of the Steeler Trawler will also have all the assets of an S-design hull and you can again make as many choices as you like for your interior and facilities. Let’s talk about your new trawler adventures…
