Kings Point Sailor Wins College Sailing Sportsmanship Award
KINGS POINT, N.Y., July 8, 2021 – United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) sailor Carrson Pearce, a member of the recently graduated Class of 2021, has been chosen as the 2021 recipient of the Robert H. Hobbs Sportsmanship Award by the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA), the governing body for sailing competition at colleges and universities throughout the United States and some parts of Canada. The announcement was made last week via a live-streamed virtual awards ceremony.
The award honors Robert Hobbs, past executive vice president of ICSA, past president of US SAILING (1992-1994), former chair of the US SAILING Olympic Committee, and a 1964 graduate of MIT. According to the ICSA, “the Hobbs Trophy shall be awarded each year to the sailor that best exemplifies the Corinthian ideals of sailing. This sailor has made contributions to college sailing through his/her efforts, by competing, promotion of the sport, fostering sportsmanship among teams, maintaining quality of competition, and contributing to the overall performance of College Sailing.”
Pearce, who graduated on June 19th with a degree in Logistics and Intermodal Transportation, and was the 2021 valedictorian, sailed competitively for the USMMA team in both double-handed and single-handed events beginning with his Plebe (freshman) year at the Academy. “I am deeply honored and was surprised to find out that I had won the award,” said Pearce. “I've poured my heart into making friends and introducing myself to new sailors I meet, but I had no idea anyone had noticed. I believe sportsmanship is one of the most important parts of sailing, and I'm honored to have been chosen as this year's recipient.”
Rick Dominique, the Director of Waterfront Varsity Programs at USMMA, and one of Pearce’s coaches, said, “as a coach, I really value this award, in that it takes a person of exemplary character to win it. The abilities needed to win t won’t fade over time like many achievement awards. We - the entire Waterfront Staff - are incredibly proud that Carrson has distinguished himself, yet again, among his peers.”
During his Kings Point sailing career, Pearce was twice named an Academic All-American and was also named to the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) All Conference team on two occasions. Four times he qualified for the ICSA Men’s Singlehanded National Championship regatta, twice he qualified for the ICSA Coed Sailing Championship and was a one-time qualifier for the ICSA Team Race Sailing Championship.
Carrson Pearce is the second Kings Point sailor to receive the Robert H. Hobbs honor, following Charlie Lomax, USMMA ’18.
“I’d like to thank Charlie Lomax,” said Pearce. “He was sailing team captain my Plebe Year, and he told me that the single most important thing to focus on for the next four years was making friends. He said there is no feeling like showing up to regattas every weekend and seeing all your best friends. I took that to heart and made an effort to introduce myself, make new friends, and invest in all my existing college sailing friendships. Because of Charlie's encouragement and advice, my college sailing experience was so much more rewarding and bright than it otherwise would have been.”
A native of Manahawkin, N.J., Pearce grew up sailing on Barnegat Bay and competed internationally in the Optimist and Laser classes as a junior sailor from Surf City Yacht Club. He is now an Ensign in the U.S Navy Reserve and will soon sail as a Third Mate with the Military Sealift Command.

If You're Thinking of Living In/Kings Point, L.I.;Where Gatsby Could Still Be Comfortable
By Vivien Kellerman
- April 14, 1996
IN the 1920's, the lush village of Kings Point with its rolling hills and the opulent life style of its wealthy inhabitants became the inspiration for West Egg in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, "The Great Gatsby."
Seven decades later, Kings Point is still home to the rich and maybe the famous, although they cherish their privacy. Several estates endure, but many more have been sold and subdivided for single-family homes.
Just 20 miles from Manhattan, residents of this quiet community on the Great Neck Peninsula have parks and a waterfront for boating, with several private neighborhood associations offering swimming pools, docks and other amenities. And there is an acclaimed school system.
House prices in Kings Point start at about $500,000. One property is on the market for $14 million -- a 16-room, 1917 Georgian manor on eight acres of waterfront property with a view of Manhattan, and the possibility of subdividing the land for development. Although there is minimum one-acre zoning in the village, some properties closer to the Great Neck line are grandfathered for half-acre zoning.
June Shapiro, owner of the Great Neck brokerage that bears her name, said that despite the expensive prices for real estate, the market was strong. She said that she had recently sold a $3.6 million water-view house in half an hour and that an $860,000 house went in a week. Many of the families purchasing houses have four, five and six children, she said, and are coming from Manhattan.
A number of the homes that were built during the height of village development in the 50's are being torn down and rebuilt. One builder who has been active in gutting old houses and rebuilding them, Scott Ornstein, recently moved back to Kings Point after living in nearby Manhasset. He said that newcomers typically have large families and want more amenities.
Cathy and Abbey Boskof have lived in their 1955 ranch-style home for 16 years. About two years ago they decided to remodel to create more space for themselves and their four children, who now range in age from 8 to 16. They added a huge master bedroom wing that includes a bathroom with whirlpool, updated the kitchen and baths and spruced up the existing rooms. Mrs. Boskof said the cost of everything, including some outside landscaping, was about $50,000.
"Even if we had spent $50,000 more to purchase another house, we couldn't have gotten everything we have here," Mrs. Boskof said. "We have such a great piece of property and the house was so easy to renovate. I really think it made more sense than to try to move."
MANY Kings Point residents belong to neighborhood associations, among which Grace Harbor, with 116 families, is the largest. Residents of this community have the use of a bath house and pool, paying annual dues depending on the size of the property. A dock with about 25 boat slips is also available, with fees varying with the size of the boat, said Mary A. Otruba, executive secretary of the association.
Kennilworth, with 92 families, is a neighborhood of larger homes valued at $1 million and more, many on the water. The neighborhood has private roads, a stucco, Spanish-tiled clubhouse built in the 20's, a pool and a dock for about 10 boats.
In addition to the neighborhood associations there are the Wildwood Pool & Tennis Club, a private club open to nonresidents and residents, and the Shelter Bay Yacht Club, also open to nonresidents.
Michael Kelnick, the 13-year Mayor of Kings Point, is a lifelong resident. He calls Kings Point "a quiet village trying to protect its quality of life."
Some of the amenities the village offers are a 24-member police force, behind-the-house garbage pickup, and programs to maintain trees. This year, the village plans to plant 2,000 trees along the public roads.
"This is probably a unique area in the suburbs, being extremely rural and so close to New York City," Mr. Kelnick said. "Keeping it tranquil is something that we all work at."
Kings Point has two parks. The 13-acre Steppingstone Park and marina offers mooring for more than 300 boats at a moderate $10-a-foot rate from April 15 to the middle of October. The park is also the site of the Steppingstone Waterside Theater, which from July 4 to Labor Day offers free outdoor concerts.
For the last 17 years, Lionel Hampton has performed on one of the weekends. Other events include ballet, opera and concerts by pop singers.
The 175-acre Kings Point Park is mostly undeveloped, with nature trails and picnicking for up to 700 people. The park has four tennis courts, three softball fields, playgrounds and a sled hill and cross country ski area.
Kings Point leases the land to the Great Neck Park District, which operates and maintains the parks. All residents of the park district have use of the district's 21 parks. A photo ID is required.
Kings Point is also the site of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The 82-acre academy has been in operation since 1943 and has an enrollment of about 900 men and women.
CHILDREN from the village may enroll in the 5,579-student Great Neck Union Free School District. They attend the kindergarten-to-grade-five John F. Kennedy Elementary School, the Richard S. Sherman Great Neck North Middle School and the John L. Miller Great Neck North High School. Ninety-five percent of the district's 1995 graduating class went on to higher education and 17 students have been named National Merit Scholarship Award finalists, said Superintendent of Schools William Shine.
FIFTY students attend the district's alternative high school, which offers smaller classrooms and stresses more nurturing environment. It opened in 1970.
The high school has a science research program and last month the program produced a winner in the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair.
From 1970 to 1981, when school enrollment declined, five district schools were closed. The buildings, however, are still being used.
One is home to an adult-education program, offering classes in citizenship and literacy and courses to help adults earn high school diplomas.
There is no commercial property in Kings Point, but there is extensive shopping in Great Neck. The Manhasset Miracle Mile shopping center is about 15 minutes away.
The land that was to become Kings Point and Great Neck was sold to Dutch settlers by Chief Tackapousha of the Mattinecock Indian tribe in 1643. Several years later, this purchase was disputed when the chief's successor contested the validity of the sale. In 1684, after the British paid the tribe more money, all claims were settled and in the mid 1600's, and permanent settlement began.
In January 1776, the residents of Kings Point, Great Neck and Sands Point formed an association declaring allegiance to the Continental Congress.
In the mid-19th century, Kings Point began attracting wealthy individuals who began buying land. Among those who eventually owned homes there were Jesse Livermore, nicknamed the "Boy Plunger of Wall Street"; Henri Bendel, founder of the store of that name; Alfred P. Sloan Jr., the legendary chairman of General Motors, and George M. Cohan, the songwriter.
Until 1924, when it incorporated as Kings Point, the area was a loosely amalgamated group of associations.
John Handler, the village historian and a 45-year resident, lives on the property that was immortalized in "The Great Gatsby."
"This is still a community of beautiful homes," he said. "But it has changed from a country atmosphere to a suburban community."
The State of Real Estate
Whether you’re renting, buying or selling, here’s a look at real estate trends..
Charter schools are popping up in struggling malls as landlords look for alternative tenants and communities seek to increase educational opportunities.
As housing costs soar, Washington State wants to limit annual rent increases to 7%. The move is part of a wider trend to impose statewide rent caps .
Developers across the United States are transforming clusters of old homes into micro restaurants to cater to the needs of surrounding neighborhoods.
Smaller houses in subdivisions and exurbs are turning into a popular option for people hoping to hold on to ownership in an increasingly expensive U.S. housing market.
Frequent natural disasters and high inflation have led home insurers to raise their premiums. That is forcing many customers to pare back their policies .
Black people make up about 14% of the American population. Some of them, wondering what it would be like to be part of a majority, are finding new homes in Africa .
