One of the best ways to experience the USVIs is by sailboat and Blue Dream Charters did not disappoint. We booked a private charter for two days of our vacation where Tommy + Erin showed us some of the most beautiful spots in St. Thomas + St. John. The views were stunning and the snorkeling was so fun. We stopped by a few popular spots and visited hidden gems, learning history + fun facts along the way. Tacos + pizza for lunch were perfect after afternoons spent swimming. We had such an amazing time celebrating my brothers 30th birthday! Tommy and Luke were the absolute best, we could not have asked for better service. Six of us had a wonderful private charter out of Cruz Bay last week. Captain Will was knowledgable and accommodating of our diverse snorkel group, providing close supervision to those who needed it. Jarred (sp?), his first mate, was a wealth of information about the history, landscape, marine life and local culture peppering information into informal conversation throughout. We sailed, visited a couple of beautiful reefs we could not have accessed via Jeep on St. John, and enjoyed a very relaxing day on the water together. Captain Tommy and his crew catered to our every whim as they dodged the rainstorms and found the perfect, quiet, beautiful anchorage where they produced a delicious meal of fresh mahi or chicken tacos with all the fixings. The boat was extremely comfortable and spacious and a wonderful spot to relax and enjoy a special birthday. The margaritas were excellent, and they kept them coming. It was truly a perfect evening. The Virgin Islands offers some incredible restaurants and bars.  The island offers traditional American food, restaurants, and fast food locations, but it also offers an assortment of Caribbean dishes that mix culture with regional influences. Some of the local favorites are Fish and Fungi, Johnny Cakes, Callaloo, (soup or stew), Conch Fritters, Pates, and Rotis. Tap & Still is a local brewery that serves burgers, booze, breakfast and beer. The brewery was started as an attraction for cruise ship passengers but has become so much more.

Hooman Pedram is the owner of three Tap & Still restaurants and Chicken & Bowling. He wanted to start a distillery as an attraction for cruise ship passengers but found his business ventures took much of his time. Meanwhile, the Brugos brothers, Joe and John, were operating Virgin Islands Craft Distillers, a small-batch distillery in the Gregorie East Marina on St. Thomas, handcrafting vodka, rum and gin. They brought in a fourth partner, Mario Austin, a local rental car franchise owner, to form Rock City Brewing Company within the Tap & Still site in Havensight Mall.

The Old Stone Farm House Restaurant is an award-winning, fine dining restaurant set in a 200-year old, restored plantation field house overlooking the lush countryside of St. Thomas.

The once 300-acre plantation stretched from Magen’s bay to Mandahl. More than two centuries ago the Old Stone Farmhouse was the core of a Danish sugar plantation at Estate Lovendahl. The graceful arches, two- foot-thick walls, and majestic rafters are reminiscent of St. Thomas during the days of the flourishing Clipper Ship trade, sugar plantations on lush rolling hills, and the aristocratic mansions of prosperous merchants. ​

Today this magnificently converted farm building is considered one of the best examples of classic West Indian architecture on the island.

Island Transportation

One of the best ways to get around in the U.S. Virgin Islands is by water! In fact, St. Thomas is one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean. Another popular form of transportation is in a car–either renting your own or taking a taxi. In fact, because U.S. Virgin Islands are part of the United States, you don’t need a special driving permit, just a valid U.S. driver’s license. Keep in mind the roads are often narrow, winding, and steep.

The History of St. Thomas

Saint Thomas is the territorial capital of the Virgin Islands, located in the Caribbean Sea. It is an unincorporated territory of the United States and within its 32 square miles holds almost 50 percent of the U.S. Virgin Islands population.

If you have ventured all the way out to Virgin Gorda, then Cooper Island is a great place for lunch. This tiny island used to be a must stop for pirates and merchants back in the day to get their water and rum barrels repaired. Now it has a great little restaurant and fully-stocked rum bar that serves every rum made in the Caribbean!

Buck Island is home to dozens of green sea turtles which are as close to tame as a wild turtle can get. Swim with the sea turtles and see other amazing marine life. Around the corner is an old navy barge ship wreck in 30′ of water, a snorkeler’s dream. Water Island is the Jost Van Dyke of the USVI with two awesome beach bars on honeymoon beach that serve amazing food and drinks.

We had Eric and Mariah. They were so knowledgeable on the history and geography it was very nice. We have 5 picky eaters and they all loved the food. Everything was delicious and we had a wonderful time. Definitely would recommend to anyone looking for a great time on the water to see some beautiful reefs and breathtaking views.

If you thought seeing turtles, manta rays and tropical fish was amazing...wait until you have the gourmet chicken Caesar salad! Long time salad eater- this one blew me away! Captain John was very welcoming, helpful and knowledgeable! Never realized how much fun it would be on a private charter for the day, picking what spots we wanted to go snorkeling, and resting out on the net with friends and family between swims.

A truly incredible experience! The crew was fantastic, full of rich knowledge about the area , they kept the entire group entertained all day. The food was amazing and the perfect amount to keep you exploring all afternoon! The Pirate Punch was a refreshing treat whilst traversing the high seas! Truly amazing experience, they enabled us to see the beauty of the islands both above and below the water and experience I’ll remember forever.

Where do I start the charter was great. They’ll take you to all the best spots for snorkeling or viewing. They know their history of the island. The lunch we had was so simple but the care put into it made it one of the best meals I had on the island! If you’re looking for a great time this charter is surely exactly what you’d want.

I know my husband left a review as well but I wanted to take a minute to tell everyone how great our day was with Sweet Pea. It was a surprise for our kids who had no idea we were going. We just had the best time. From the atmosphere to the food and drinks it was all so well done. We saw amazing things snorkeling (ie dolphins, spotted rays, turtles) and our lunch was spectacular. We played in the water swam to beaches and enjoyed the day. Please don’t hesitate to book-it was the best money spent!

What an incredible experience. Was a wonderful day made so by the competent and pleasant crew, Captain John and first mate Mariah. We are a relatively discerning family and this experience more than met our expectations. Please don't go looking any further because no need to do so. This will be the best day you spend on the islands and worth every penny.

Had an amazing day out on the boat. From the breakfast treats, to snorkeling, to lunch, everything was fantastic. John and Mariah took us to some amazing spots, pointed out the landscape and history of the islands and helped us see some turtles, sting rays, and great reefs. Highly recommend a day out on the Sweet Pea and hanging out with Jeep, the dog on board!

This was our 2nd time out on Sweet Pea. Although the crew was not the same as last year, the experience was awesome! Captain Eric and Mariah were very knowledgeable and attentive to our needs. Snorkeling was beautiful. Rum punch and lunch were tasty! Boat Day is the best day! Can't wait to do it again!

Virgin Islands Yacht Charters directly manages the charter fleet.  We are not a broker.  We do work with many reputable and trustworthy charter brokers who regularly book our boats and are familiar with our procedures and knowledgeable of the local cruising grounds.  At the same time, there are many brokers out there who know absolutely nothing about our fleet OR even the Virgin Islands themselves.  Please be aware. 

Catamarans are wonderfully spacious and provide ample area for moving around.  Whether it is in the cockpit or salon which spans over both hulls allowing for a larger area inside, the foredeck with the trampoline  for sun-tanning, or the great lounging area on the top deck you will enjoy the variety of ways to spend your day on the water.  Cats are much more stable than their counterparts which can be much better for new or inexperienced sailors who haven't quite found their sea legs yet or those who are prone to seasickness.   Two engines allow for greater maneuverability when in a marina or picking up mooring balls and thus, have gained popularity in recent years.  And, you will love the panoramic views!

Best Times to Vacation in St. Thomas

Sailing in St Thomas

The Virgin Islands are one of the most popular sailing grounds in the world, primarily due to the proximity of the surrounding islands.  With countless white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, incredible reefs, and consistent wind, sailing around St Thomas and St John is a must-do when visiting the Virgin Islands.

St Thomas Sailing Itinerary Highlights and Hotspots:

Christmas cove.

Very popular amongst sailors and power-boaters alike, Christmas Cove is a great place to go for a snorkel on the remote island’s reefs, bask in the sun on our water toys and relax on board to the sound of your favorite music.  Order a pizza from the floating restaurant, Pizza Pi, while you relax and enjoy the protection of the bay from the easterly winds.  The water in Christmas Cove is pristine and clear, with a guarantee to see plenty of local sea life.

Maho Bay is a favorite spot amongst both those on land and boaters alike and a very special spot to swim with Turtles!  The beach has beautiful white sand and towering palm trees and is always calm; perfect for a snorkel and a soak.  Maho Bay is one of the few bays with a sandy bottom that extends far offshore, providing lots of real estate for sea life to migrate through and perfect for guests of all ages to enjoy the visibility it provides.

Lovango Cay

Home to the recent development Lovango Resort & Beach Club, Lovango is a private island equidistant from St Thomas and St John.  Lovango Resort is one of the newest go-to day charter destinations in the USVI and a quick boat trip from St Thomas or St John.  Many guests choose to visit Lovango Cay for a snorkel and then an exquisite oceanfront lunch before continuing on with their adventures.  (Local secret; the backside of Lovango Cay has one of the most beautiful stretches of ocean as the Atlantic Ocean moves between Congo Cay and Lovango Cay, with visibility 50-60 feet to the ocean floor).

Honeymoon Beach

On the North shore of St John, just around the corner from Cruz Bay, Honeymoon Beach is adjacent to the former Caneel Bay Beach Resort.  As of late 2022, Honeymoon Beach has a new establishment, the Caneel Bay Beach Club, a unique offering for lunch, drinks and relaxing.  With beautiful white sand and crystal clear water, Honeymoon is a must do when cruising on Freedom.

Cinnamon Bay  

Cinnamon Bay happens to be the longest beach in St John and is situated on the decorated North Shore of St John.  While the land-based activities feature camping amenities, snack bar, showers, and restrooms our charter guests typically enjoy the turquoise water and snorkelers can enjoy the beauty under the surface.  Famous Peter Bay, with incredible private and rental homes, sits just nearby to the West, and a trip to Cinnamon Bay wouldn’t be complete without a drive-by “house tour” of Peter Bay.

Oppenheimer Beach

Also called Gibney Beach, Oppenheimer Beach sits on St. John’s North Shore located directly east of Hawksnest Bay on St John.  With several mooring balls for term charters and day charters alike, Oppenheimer also features “St John’s Smallest Beach” also known as Mermaid’s Chair.

Sailing with Marty was my first experience as an adult sailing off the coast. We had a wonderful trip starting in St Augustine. First, we were given some basic information about the boat and safety, the other crew members and our destination. Then we were off. We sailed up to Amelia Island for most of the day and then docked at Fernandina Beach marina. We had a short walk into downtown and had a wonderful meal. It was also a great way to really get to know the other members of the crew. The next morning we set off and sailed north to Cumberland Island. Once on the island, we explored the ruins, had a nice hike and enjoyed dinner on the boat. The next step was amazing. We headed off into the sunset on the boat and sailed all night. It was truly exhilarating sailing through the night. At all times, I felt safe but the excitement got me hooked on sailing. Marty is honest, helpful, and always cheerful; exactly what you want in a captain.

This past summer my husband and I had an awesome time on Summerwind. The weather was warm so it was a great time sailing to downtown St Augustine and simply grabbing a mooring ball eating a yummy lunch with our family and diving off the back for a refreshing dip. The following day we took the boat several miles out in the ocean with all the sails up, music on in the cabin; a complete escape from work etc. At day’s end we sailed right up to Caps On The Water restaurant for my birthday where we enjoyed a seafood dinner and drinks. We can’t wait to plan another visit aboard Summerwind, It was a complete vacation over only a single weekend. Many thanks.

Sailing with Marty is truly a treat... He and his trusty Yacht are one with the mighty ocean. Years at sea and behind the helm show, and pay off in high seas or calm. We had such a peaceful experience taking in the joys of the sea while sailing with Marty. He was willing to let us take on roles to help sail the boat (and willing to let us fail, too!) We brought along our two little children (2.5 years and 10 months) and they enjoyed playing below deck and seeing the beautiful scenery sailing by. We were grateful for Marty’s expertise, generosity and passion for sailing!

I've sailed with Captain Marty several times and it was a joy. One of the trips was a longer sail from Puerto Rico to Saint Augustine, Florida in May, 2013. We had a great time and I felt totally comfortable with Marty as our Captain. His sailing and navigating experience made me feel very at ease while on the water - he is a safety conscious sailor. I would give the trip 5 stars!

Being a novice on boats, this was a very exciting time for me. Marty and the crew made me feel very comfortable aboard the Yacht. We sailed down the Cooper River, under the incredible Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and into Charleston Harbor. I enjoyed seeing the USS Yorktown and the submarines. The view of the city of Charleston and the historic homes was amazing! Marty is very knowledgeable about historic sites. Seeing Fort Sumter from the water was also a memorable experience. I would rate this sail as 5 stars

My family and I have sailed many times over the last ten years with Marty and his crews including wonderful afternoons off the coast of St. Augustine. Enjoy a private charter for up to 12 guests. Snorkel, beach or barhop ​ – you and your captain will plan your perfect itinerary.  Friendly reminder, a valid passport is required for each guest to travel to the BVI.

About M/V Poseidon: ​

M/V Poseidon is a 36’  TwinVee  known for its speed and stability while still maintaining comfort and allowing guests to stay dry. It truly is the  most comfortable powerboat on the island. Poseidon features a Fusion Bluetooth stereo to listen to your favorite tunes. Its low draft and  transom ladder allow us to drop you within a few feet of the beach.   ​

Poseidon has everything you need for a private charter for up to 12 guests, including your captain, water, ice, soda, beer and plenty of snorkeling gear. Fuel is not included and will be billed at $8 per gallon for actual usage.

Customs |  To enter the British Virgin Islands, each guest is required to pay a customs fee of $85 cash. This is due to your captain before the vessel departs the USVI.   ​

Select your departure location when you book your charter.

Red Hook, St. Thomas Boat Charters |  You will meet your captain at the Seas the Day Charters USVI departure lounge at American Yacht Harbor in Red Hook fifteen minutes prior to your departure. The lounge is located on the bottom floor of the building, directly across from the entrance to “B” dock.

Cruz Bay, St. John Boat Charters |  You will meet your captain at the dock in front of the Virgin Islands National Park Visitor Center in Cruz Bay, across from Mongoose Junction.

Your captain will text or call your party as they depart St. Thomas to provide their projected arrival time between 8:45 AM and 9:15 AM. Because the National Park Dock is public, the time you step onboard may be impacted by the length of the queue to dock. Please have your cell phone available on the morning of your charter so your captain can ensure you are in the proper location for use of the National Park pickup/dropoff-only dock.
