Terms and conditions, charter experts, llc terms & conditions.

PLEASE READ THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS (“ Terms ”) CAREFULLY AS THEY CONTAIN IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS, REMEDIES AND OBLIGATIONS AS WELL AS A SECTION GOVERNING THE JURISDICTION AND VENUE OF DISPUTES. THESE TERMS ALSO CONTAIN A LEGALLY BINDING RELEASE, WAIVER OF LIABILITY, AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. By creating a username, a login, clicking submit, using the services of Charter Experts, LLC d/b/a Virgin Island Sailing® (“ Broker ) or by accessing Broker’s website, you agree that you have read, and acknowledge your acceptance of these Terms. The Terms are subject to change at any time without notice at Broker’s sole discretion. Additionally, any transaction for which you have made payment shall be governed by the form of Terms in effect at the time of such payment notwithstanding any subsequent changes hereto.

If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

  • Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

  • Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
  • Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

  • Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
  • Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
  • Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.

You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. You agree that the Charter Provider and Charter Suppliers whose names appear in the information supplied to you are those who are solely responsible for providing the Charter you purchase. You consent to and request the use of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers and agree to not hold Broker responsible should any of them: (i) fail to provide the Charter or travel services you purchased, whether or not such services are listed in the Charter Agreement or otherwise, (ii) fail to comply with any applicable law, or (iii) engage in any negligent act or omission that causes you any sort of injury, damage, delay or inconvenience.

By using Broker’s services, you waive and release any claim against Broker, its affiliated and subsidiary companies, and their respective officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, arising out of or in connection with any loss of or damage to property or injury to any person caused by reason of (i) any defect, negligence, or other wrongful act or omission, or any failure of performance of any kind, by any Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, or any other provider of sea, airline, hotel, ground transportation or any other travel provider connected to or otherwise associated with the Charter, (ii) any claim for inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, mental distress or other similar claim, (iii) any delayed departure, missed connection, substitute accommodation, termination of service or change in fares or rates, and (iv) overbooking, flight or other travel cancellation, lost or misconnected personal property, or any claim arising out of the air transportation portion of your travel, and (v) or any other claim arising out of or otherwise related to the Charter Agreement or services provided by the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers.

Excepting only liability that directly arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of Broker, you will not hold Broker responsible for any injury, damage or loss you may suffer while on a Charter, whether incurred on the Charter or in connection with any other rental, purchase, excursion or activity, regardless of the relationship of any of the foregoing with the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers.

  • Your Responsibility . By booking a Charter with Broker, you agree to defend and indemnify and hold harmless Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, from and against any and all claims, causes of action, demands, recoveries, losses, damages, fines, penalties or other costs or expenses of any kind or nature, including but not limited to reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with: (i) your breach of these Terms or the documents referenced herein; (ii) your violation of any law or rights of a third party; or (iii) your use of the Broker website.

You will review your Charter Agreement and travel documents for accuracy upon receipt. You understand that it is your responsibility to review the accuracy of all details in the Charter Reservation provided to you, and that you may contact Broker if you have any questions.

You assume full and complete responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements of your destination(s), and all conditions regarding health, safety, security, political stability, and labor or civil unrest at such destination(s).

You understand that Broker recommends purchasing travel insurance to cover certain risks inherent in travel such as supplier bankruptcy and the inability to travel due to a medical or personal emergency.

  • No Warranties . All Charters, products, services, advice and information is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis without warranties of any kind, either expressed or implied to the fullest extent permitted under the law, including but not limited to, warranties of title or implied warranties of merchantability, satisfactory quality or fitness for a particular purpose. Without limiting the above, no warranty or guarantee is made (i) regarding the acceptance of any reservation request or Charter Reservation; (ii) regarding the availability of Charters, or any other product and/or services through Broker; (iii) that the use of Broker’s website will be error-free; or (iv) regarding the completeness, accuracy, reliability or quality of any information, content, data, service, advice or merchandise provided by Broker or through Broker’s website.

Broker has no special knowledge regarding the Charter Provider’s or Charter Supplier’s financial condition, unsafe conditions, health hazards, weather hazards, or climate extremes at locations to which you may travel during or otherwise in connection with your Charter.

  • Limitation on Liability . In no event shall Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and/or their respective affiliates, or any employees, agents, officers, directors, members or managers of any of the foregoing (“Broker and Charter Releasees”), be liable for any direct, indirect, punitive, incidental, special or consequential damages arising out of, or in any way connected with, your access to, display of or use the Broker’s website, the Charter or services provided to you in connection with the Charter (including, but not limited to, your reliance upon opinions of the Broker), whether based on a theory of negligence, contract, tort, strict liability, consumer protection statutes, or otherwise, and even if Broker and/or any other of the Broker and Charter Releasees have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

If, despite the limitation above, Broker or the Broker and Charter Releasees are found liable for any loss or damage which arises out of or in any way connected with any of the occurrences described above, then Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Supplier and the Broker and Charter Releasees will in no event exceed, in the aggregate, the greater of (a) the Broker Fee, and (b) One-Hundred Dollars (US $100.00).

The foregoing limitation of liability reflects the allocation of risk between the parties. The limitations specified in this section will survive and apply even if any limited remedy specified in these Terms is found to have failed of its essential purpose. The limitations of liability provided in these Terms inure to the benefit of Broker and/or its providers.

The foregoing does not affect any liability which cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

  • Limitation on Time to File Claims . ANY CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM YOU MAY HAVE ARISING OUT OF RELATING TO BROKER’S SERVICES OR THE WEBSITE MUST BE COMMENCED WITHIN ONE (1) YEAR AFTER THE CAUSE OF ACTION ACCRUES, OTHERWISE, SUCH CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM IS PERMANENTLY BARRED.
  • Waiver . No waiver by Broker of any term or condition set forth in these Terms shall be deemed a further or continuing waiver of such term or condition or a waiver of any other term or condition, and any failure of the Broker to assert a right or provision under these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
  • Severability . If any provision of these Terms is held by a court or other tribunal of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable for any reason, such provision shall be eliminated or limited to the minimum extent such that the remaining provisions of the Terms will continue in full force and effect.
  • Governing Law and Mandatory Venue . The laws of the State of Florida govern the rights and obligations of the parties to this Agreement and the interpretation, construction and enforceability thereof. You agree that any action or proceeding initiated by Charterer against Broker shall be brought solely in the federal and state courts of Hillsborough County, Florida, and you submit to the jurisdiction of those courts and waive any objections to the exercise of personal jurisdiction over you by those courts. In the event any action or proceeding is initiated by Charterer in a court outside of Hillsborough County, Florida, Charterer agrees to pay Broker’s costs and reasonable attorneys’ fees associated with defending such action or proceeding and waives any and all defenses to the transfer of said action or proceeding, whether jurisdictional or otherwise, to a federal or state court in Hillsborough County, Florida.

St Thomas Yacht Charters

St. Thomas is one of the most popular islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands for sailboat, bareboat, and yacht charters. While sailing near this island you’ll be delighted by the warm winds, wildlife, and water so clear you can see the corals at the sea floor. When you take your first steps on land, you’ll be greeted with the bustling streets, island music, and eclectic eating for both first-time visitors and seasoned sailors of the Carribean. 12 Knots offers a variety of boat rental options beginning at St. Thomas. Before you travel to the island, here is what you should know:

Sailing Conditions in St. Thomas

St. Thomas is in a tropical climate with calm seas and consistent trade winds. Wind speeds near St. Thomas average at 10 to 20 knots year-round, and the average north-east swell is around 8–9 feet. Most sailors enjoy the hot and humid climate due to the consistent winds to help cool you off at peak hours. The primary weather concern for sailors is the rainfall and potential for summer and fall hurricanes.

Best Times to Vacation in St. Thomas

Winter and spring are the most comfortable and safest times to travel to St. Thomas for your sailing charter. Hurricane season falls between June and November, which promises the greatest rainfall and potentially hazardous conditions on the island. For this reason, it is advised to schedule your sailing charter before June or after October. The spring and fall also offer slightly cooler temperatures while you explore the islands.

Boat Types For Charters

12 Knots offers a variety of yacht and sailboat charters suitable for each individual’s needs. We encourage experienced skippers to try our bareboat catamaran or trimaran rentals, while novice sailors are placed on crewed yachts and powerboats for ease and comfort. Our options include:

YOUR TIME IS VALUABLE, DON'T WASTE A MINUTE OF IT!

BEAUTIFUL NEW BOATS, IMPECCABLE MAINTENANCE, AND FRIENDLY, KNOWLEDGEABLE STAFF

Virgin Islands Yacht Charters directly manages the charter fleet.  We are not a broker.  We do work with many reputable and trustworthy charter brokers who regularly book our boats and are familiar with our procedures and knowledgeable of the local cruising grounds.  At the same time, there are many brokers out there who know absolutely nothing about our fleet OR even the Virgin Islands themselves.  Please be aware.

Calypso on Anchor Front View.jpeg

Catamarans are wonderfully spacious and provide ample area for moving around.  Whether it is in the cockpit or salon which spans over both hulls allowing for a larger area inside, the foredeck with the trampoline  for sun-tanning, or the great lounging area on the top deck you will enjoy the variety of ways to spend your day on the water.  Cats are much more stable than their counterparts which can be much better for new or inexperienced sailors who haven't quite found their sea legs yet or those who are prone to seasickness.   Two engines allow for greater maneuverability when in a marina or picking up mooring balls and thus, have gained popularity in recent years.  And, you will love the panoramic views!

What People Are Saying . . .

Sailing onboard Kruzen.jpg

The Osborn Family

VIYC was one of the best charter companies we've used. They keep their word and honor their promises. They promptly fix stuff and immediately talk us through solvable problems. They know the boat, the waters, and sailing area, the culture.

Scuby's operations briefing was one of the best I've attended in my years of chartering.

                                                                                                                                       ~Fred Osborn

I had the pleasure of chartering a yacht from Virgin Islands Yacht Charters out of Compass Point, St Thomas.  I have chartered numerous yachts over the years; as well as operated by own charter sailing yacht for five years.  Kristi and Jim, the owners, do an outstanding job of assuring the yacht is ready to go and in top shipshape.  Any follow up or support if needed is prompt and efficient.  I highly recommend Virgin Islands Yacht Charters.

Fun at The Baths

Jim & Kristi,

Thanks so much for completing our experience. Our past charter experiences in the BVI were a mixed bag of paradise, apathetic service, and mechanically challenged yachts. God made the islands beautiful, you two made sailing them a pleasure by providing friendly service and an excellent line of yachts. This experience felt less like a charter and more like borrowing a great boat from old friends.

We’ll be back…                                                                                          ~Rev. Seth Sundstrom

Sailing the Virgin Islands: Airbnb & VRBO Catamaran Charters

Virgin Islands Sailing Charters - USVI Sailing

The idea of sailing in the Virgin Islands might conjure up images of celebrities and private yachts.  But it’s one of the Caribbean’s best secrets that you can sail the Virgin Islands on a catamaran or sailboat from Airbnb and VRBO.  Plus, sailing is the best way to explore the white sand beaches, gorgeous scenery, and snorkeling that make the Virgin Islands famous.  Get advice for choosing a sailing charter, plus hacks for day trippers and solo travelers!

After I did a liveaboard snorkeling trip while traveling solo in Thailand, my family decided they wanted in on the adventure.  But as we considered closer options in the Caribbean, we realized that most were large boats with mixed snorkeling and scuba diving groups.  Soon, though, I hit upon a solution: for about the same per-person cost, we could charter a private catamaran to sail the Virgin Islands.

Experienced sailors can hire a “bare boat” charter, where your group skippers, navigates, and cooks for themselves.  But luckily for those of us that don’t know our leeward from our aft, it’s also possible to charter a boat with a captain and crew.  In this guide I’ll share the easiest way to charter a boat and what to expect, the best sights of the US and British Virgin Islands, and all the tips you need to plan an amazing vacation.

Things to Do in the Virgin Islands

Virgin Islands Sailing Overview & Planning

What to expect sailing in the virgin islands.

How does a totally effortless vacation sound, with your only decisions being when to eat, snorkel, lounge, and drink tropical cocktails?  What about falling asleep to the gentle motions of the boat and sound of waves, then waking up with views of blue sky and turquoise waters from the portals?

If you choose a Virgin Islands charter with a captain and crew, you can completely relax! It’s common for couples to crew boats together and take care of everything.  If you choose a boat with just a captain, you’ll likely pick up some sailing skills helping out.  And members of your group can pitch in to take turns preparing meals and cleaning up.

For those who haven’t spent much time on a boat, the living space might be smaller than you expect. But you’ll have the ocean and beaches for your playground every day, and can arrange the itinerary to go ashore for dinners at low-key beach restaurants.  In short, pack bathing suits, sunscreen, cover-ups, and casual dresses, and leave the heels at home!  (More packing tips later!)

Airbnb St. Thomas Virgin Islands: Budget to Luxury Beach Escapes

Advice on the best Airbnb St. Thomas stays for a tropical escape, from budget condos to mid range resorts & luxury villas for a group. Includes bonus tips on the best beaches, sights, and tours for planning your getaway.

About the Virgin Islands

Did you know there are actually three different groups of Virgin Islands?  Well, I didn’t, until I took this trip!  The British Virgin Islands are the most popular and well-known.  Made up of over 50 islands, the BVI are some of the least-developed spots in the Caribbean, but their largest islands are renowned as luxury destinations.  The beautiful beaches and party bars of Jost Van Dyke are here, as are the picturesque grottoes of the Virgin Gorda Baths.

Just 20 miles away lie the US Virgin Islands, known as “America’s paradise.”  Its three islands – St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix – each has a different attraction for travelers.  St. Thomas is famed as a luxury getaway, while the island of St. John is ⅔ undeveloped. Still, there are tons of things to do in St. John , including a national park perfect for snorkeling and hiking.  Further south, St. Croix offers colonial history and tours of the Cruzan Rum distillery in addition to spectacular snorkeling.

The Spanish Virgin Islands are actually part of Puerto Rico, so the name is a holdover from when the island belonged to Spain.  In the SVI, you’ll find the unspoiled beaches of Culebra and a bioluminescent bay in Vieques.  Many travelers here say that these islands remind them of the quieter BVI of years past.

US residents can travel in the USVI and SVI without a passport, but will need one to enter the BVI.

Buck Island - St. Croix USVI

Booking a Virgin Islands Sailing Charter

In both the BVI and USVI, there are companies that exclusively provide sailing charter rentals.  If you want a bare boat charter, one of these companies is likely the best option, as they can advise on all the options and considerations for your trip.

However, for a crewed boat, I found that the easiest way to arrange a Virgin Islands charter was to use a site like VRBO or Airbnb.   Both offer online reviews, and their bookings follow the same policies as regular vacation rentals on those sites.  You can also message with the host before you book to ask any questions.

I’ll share more recommended options later in this guide. I always recommend always booking through a reputable company, so that you have assistance should you need it.

How Long Should You Stay in the Virgin Islands?

Depending on the length of your trip and options from your captain, you might be able to see all of the Virgin Islands.  On our one-week Virgin Islands itinerary, we didn’t have time for the Spanish Islands, but easily saw all of the best sights of the BVI and USVI.

Because you spend most of your time on the boat, in the water, or on a beach, you’ll get a lot of sun on this trip!  One week was enough for me, with my fair skin and tendency to turn into a lobster.  If you plan to stretch your trip to 10 or 14 days, just keep this in mind when you plan your itinerary and pack.  You’ll have more time to spend ashore at stops than we did, which will help.

Be sure to read my snorkeling packing list for tips on reef-safe sunscreen, dry bags, UPF clothing and more gear for your trip.

The Best Time to Visit the U.S. and British Virgin Islands

High season in the Virgin Islands is December through April, when most of us are looking for an escape from cold winter weather!  Hurricane season begins in June and lasts until November.  Luckily, sunshine is plentiful year round, with daytime temperatures in the high 80’s and nighttime temps in the 70’s.

If you can travel in May – June or November – early December, the shoulder seasons, you’re likely to find more availability and cheaper rates.

We traveled at the end of April and the weather was nearly perfect, except for a storm that caused my mom’s flight to be re-routed through Puerto Rico.  Luckily she made it onto a small puddle jumper (complete with bawking chicken sounds coming from the hold!) and met up with us just a few hours late.  The weather for the rest of the trip was picture-perfect.

Check weather averages for your dates from Holiday-Weather.com .

Choosing a Boat: Monohull (Sailboat or Sailing Yacht) or Catamaran

When choosing a boat, you’ll have considerations such as the number of people in your group, the layout of the boat, and your own personal preferences.  Some might want the adventure and experience of a “real” sailboat, while others would prefer a steadier trip with more space and luxuries aboard a double-hulled catamaran.

While I love the romance and classic adventure of a sailboat, I ultimately prefer a catamaran for a multi-day trip.  They offer more room, usually with a living room between the two hulls.  Double hulls also make catamarans more stable, lessening seasickness and making it easier to walk on the deck.  There’s also netting between the hulls at the front of the boat, which creates an amazing place to relax over the water and watch sunsets!

More luxurious boats have ensuite bathrooms for each cabin; in general, the boats accommodate 2-8 guests.  Be sure to check the layouts of your choices before you book.

Sandy Cay - Virgin Islands Sailing

What’s Included in A Virgin Islands Sailing Charter?

The short answer: it depends.  Each charter listing will include all the details, and you can also clarify additional points before you book. Some rates include all costs, which makes it easier to evaluate; these usually have a set base price which increases depending on the number of travelers.  There might be watersports equipment included like snorkels, water noodles, and paddleboards, which helps you pack less.

It’s common that “provisions” aren’t included: these are all the food, drinks, and groceries you’ll need.  Provisioning can be arranged through your booking company or captain, or you can shop for it yourself.  We chose to pay our captain to provision his boat, but stopped at a local shop to pick up some extra rum and preferred liquors!

Additionally, there could be other extras such as fuel, water, national park permit, etc.  Be sure to check the details of each listing and clarify any points so you can compare your options.

USVI and BVI Sailing Charter Easy Bookings

These options below all have good reviews as well as availability calendars and online bookings.  Note that if they begin in the BVI, it’s still possible to visit the USVI, and vice versa depending on what you agree on with the captain or host.  The USVI and BVI are only about 20 miles apart – but keep in mind that you will need to bring a passport to travel between the two countries!

Airbnb Sailing Charters

Check out these sailing charters for the US and British Virgin Islands from Airbnb. If you prefer to search for your own options on Airbnb, specify a boat under the “unique stays” option. But keep an eye out for bookings that are only lodging: some boats remain at the dock or don’t include sailing.

VRBO Charters

VRBO is another top vacation rental site, and has many options to book sailing charters in the BVI and USVI . Check some of their best-rated charters including the one my family and I booked, the Guiding Light.

Best Sights for Virgin Islands Sailing

Wondering what the top sights are in the BVI and USVI?  Check out these ideas for your Virgin Islands sailing itinerary.

BVI Top Sights | Sights for Sailing in the British Virgin Islands

The baths on virgin gorda island.

The huge, smooth grey boulders and clear turquoise waters of The Baths are one of the most-recognizable sights of the BVI.  This national park is a must-see spot for Virgin Islands sailing.  Swim in from the bay to snorkel and explore the grotto and calm pools. You can hike from the top of The Baths to the picturesque Devil’s Bay, at Virgin Gorda’s southwestern end.

photo of the boulders on the beach of Virgin Gorda Island

Jost Van Dyke

The smallest of the four main islands of the BVI, Jost van Dyke is rumored to have been named for a Dutch pirate that used the island’s harbours as a hideout.  The island is accessible by ferry service and private boats, as well as cruises that dock and shuttle passengers ashore.  White Bay is a gorgeous white sand beach with many bars like the Soggy Dollar, home of the famous Painkiller cocktail.  On the east side of the island, visit the Bubbly Pool, a natural jacuzzi formed by waves rushing over the rocky shore.  At the Great Harbor, have dinner and drinks at Corsairs restaurant and popular Foxy’s bar.  Nearby, hike and snorkel at Sandy Cay, a tropical deserted island surrounded by a barrier reef.

Soper’s Hole, West End, Tortola BVI

Soper’s Hole in Tortola’s West End is one of the places where you can clear customs and immigration from the USVI to the BVI.  It has a colorful marina with restaurants and shops which are a good spot for souvenirs.  If you need provisions, stop in at Harbour Market.  Be sure to check out Pusser’s Landing, a bar and restaurant which also claims to be the birthplace of the Painkiller! You should definitely try both to see if you prefer theirs or the Soggy Dollar’s. 😉

Cane Garden Bay, Tortola

Cane Garden bay is the most popular beach on Tortola, with calm turquoise waters and a beautiful crescent beach.  Swimming, windsurfing and other water sports are popular here, as well as the lively bars and restaurants that line the beach.  Tour the nearby Callwood Rum Distillery, where they’re producing rum the same way they did 200 years ago.

photo of beach and turquoise waters at Cane Garden Bay Tortola

Norman Island & The Indians

Norman Island is a BVI gem rumored to have inspired the Robert Louis Stevenson classic “Treasure Island.” Snorkel right into the high cliff face at the island’s famous caves which are full of marine life.   Nearby, you can also snorkel on the Indians, a dramatic series of rocks as you approach Norman Island.  The water on one side of the Indians is deep, but the reef is full of colorful coral, sea fans, and marine life.  The Indians are a must-see spot for BVI sailing.  At Norman Island’s protected anchorage area known as “the Bight,” visit local bars and restaurants including the floating bar Willy T’s and Pirates Bight restaurant.

underwater photo of a coral formation

The RMS Rhone is a shipwreck that sank in 1867 during a category 3 hurricane.  Now, the wreck site and surrounding waters are the Rhone National Marine Marine Park.  This is an amazing site for scuba diving, but it’s possible to snorkel as well since the water is very clear.  Much of the vessel is still intact.

Top USVI Sights | Sights for Sailing in the US Virgin Islands

Virgin islands national park, st. john.

Virgin Islands National Park occupies ⅔ of the island of St. John. Many of the beaches are fringed by coral reefs. They include Trunk Bay, with an underwater snorkeling trail including guide signs with information on the coral and sealife.  The beach here has been voted one of the most beautiful in the world!  Annaberg Plantation has the ruins of an 18th-century sugar plantation, which visitors can tour to learn more about the plantation’s role in the African slave trade as well as how it produced sugar, molasses, and rum. Trails through tropical forests lead to the ruins of Reef Bay Sugar Mill, in the south.

photo of a bay and mountains of the national park in the US Virgin Islands on St. John

Cinnamon Bay Beach, St. John

Cinnamon Bay Beach is one of the most beautiful and pristine beaches within the National Park. It’s the longest beach on St. John, with a half mile of white sand plus palm trees and sea grapes for shade.  Snorkelers can explore the small cay located less than 100 yards off the shoreline. This beach is still recovering from Hurricane Irma, and doesn’t have any restaurants.

photo of pristine beach in the USVI - Cinnamon Bay

Buck Island, off St. Croix

Off the coast of St. Croix lies uninhabited Buck Island, 175 acres of protected land surrounded by 19,000 acres of the Buck Island Reef National Monument. The barrier reef is a nesting area for three species of sea turtles, and also has an underwater trail through coral and sea fans.

Caribbean Gem: Buck Island Reef National Monument (Short Film, 2014)

Leinster Bay & Waterlemon Cay, St. John

Waterlemon Cay is tiny island in Leinster Bay, and a top snorkeling spot on St. John with many species of coral, fish, and marine life.  A strong current sometimes runs on the north side of the cay, so use caution snorkeling there.  On the south side, find longspine sea urchins, many fish, and hard and soft corals.  This was another of my favorite snorkeling spots on our trip!

aerial view of a small island in Leinster Bay

Salt Pond Bay, St. John

Salt Pond Bay has a beautiful crescent shaped beach with calm, clear waters.  This is a more secluded beach, as it’s further from tourist spots, and also a quarter mile hike from its parking lot.  Salt Pond Bay is one of the top snorkeling locations on St. John, and has access to hiking trails that provide views of the island.

Salt Pond Bay hike - St. John USVI

Maho Bay, St. John

Maho Bay is a popular spot to see sea turtles. The seagrass beds in the middle of the shallow bay provide a habitat for the green sea turtles.  There are also reefs at the eastern and western ends of the shore with hard and soft corals and many tropical fish species.

Maho Bay St. John USVI

Sandy Point, St. Croix

Sandy Point is a pristine beach on the southwestern tip of St. Croix that is also a national wildlife refuge.  If it looks familiar, it was featured in the movie “The Shawshank Redemption.”   The 400-acre reserve is a habitat for leatherback sea turtles.  Since it’s a wildlife reserve, there are no beach bars or services here – just uninhabited beaches.

Sandy Point - US Virgin Islands St. Croix

Magens Bay, St. Thomas

Beautiful Magens Bay is one of the most popular beaches in the USVI, with a mile-long stretch of sand with calm clear waters.  It’s known as a spot for snorkeling with sea turtles as well as paddleboarding and other water sports.  Relax at the beach bar and restaurant  for a drink and a snack.

Getting to the Virgin Islands for a Sailing Charter

Us virgin islands airports, ferries and taxis.

There are two major airports in the Virgin Islands: Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas (STT) and Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on St. Croix (STX).  Most charters start from St. Thomas.

Check flights to St. Thomas STT | Check flights to St. Croix STX

There is a ferry that runs from St. Thomas and St. John between Red Hook and Cruz Bay .

At the airport, exit to find a taxi stand outside.  Taxis are priced per person based on your destination.  Many run like a shuttle, in a large van with other travelers.  Get an idea of rates and destinations here .

British Virgin Islands Airports & Transportation

There are two ways to get to the British Virgin Islands. The first is to fly directly to Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Tortola (EIS), formerly Beef Island Airport. The second way is to fly to Cyril E. King airport in St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands (STT) and then take a ferry to Tortola, BVI.  Most charters in the BVI depart from Tortola.

What to Pack for Your Virgin Islands Sailing Charter Vacation

As I mentioned before, a sailing vacation is very casual!  I recommend packing at least 2 bathing suits as well as a rashguard shirt with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) to protect you from the sun.  If you’re an avid snorkeler, you might even want UPF capris so that your backside doesn’t get burnt (true story) . A dry-bag is a must-have for trips ashore.

Also, there won’t be much room onboard, so be sure to bring a soft-sided bag rather than a regular suitcase.  Get my full packing list for snorkeling trips and liveaboard adventures and check out my list of favorite gear .

More Recommended Gear for Your Trip

Safety note: uscg approved life jackets for kids.

Your charter will surely provide life jackets for all passengers, but it’s especially important for children to have a life jacket (or personal flotation device – PFD) that is meant for their age, size and weight and approved by the US Coast Guard (USGC).  USGC ratings specify that jackets for infants and small children should have a padded head support, grab handle, and crotch strap to keep it from riding up (and the child from slipping out).

Get more info here and tips from REI including getting kids used to jackets ahead of time at home.  Note: water wings, float suits, and similar items are meant for supervised play.  US law requires that children under 13 years of age must wear their lifejacket, unless below deck.

Virgin Islands Boat Rentals

A vacation in the Virgin Islands never disappoints, and here you will find many friendly locals, good food and scratch band music (called fungi music in the British part of the territories). There are also our beautiful azure waters and white sand beaches that beckon you to sunbathe and frolic within them. There are so many fun things to do in the Virgin Islands that it was hard for us to put our finger on the ultimate experience. However, when we polled our guests about the most enjoyable part of their trip, their reaction was unanimous. Their favorite experience cited, by far, was a vacation day or two spent  boating  on the Caribbean Sea’s gorgeous waves.

Besides winning our popularity contest, a  boat  day is the absolute BEST way to experience all of the activities, attractions and unspoiled scenery that make the Virgin Islands the trip of a lifetime. A trip by  boat  allows you to easily hop from one island to the next, allowing you to enjoy the best of what St. Thomas, St. John and the British Virgin Islands have to offer. Keep in mind that our neighbors in the British Virgin island won’t be reopening until September.

During your wondrous maritime excursion, you’ll get to revel at fun bars scattered along the shoreline, explore the best snorkeling locales and watch the green flash of an ethereal sunset on the horizon from your own private deck. Keep in mind that the sun sets fast; we’re talking just a few minutes here. The most unbelievable thing is that you can experience all that in just one amazing day!

What follows is a guide to chartering some of the excellent  boat  rentals and tours on the islands. However, keep in mind that rentals vary in occupancy, type of vessel and itinerary. Because of that, you will want to scroll through the different options and be well-versed in all that they offer.

One common theme you will notice about the  boat  tours is that they are unstructured – better to relax and enjoy the luxurious and laid back experience on your own terms. Simply ask the friendly captain their recommendations as to what are the best things to see and do during the trip. After the discussion, they will navigate to the preferences and interests you indicated.

At the end of each  boat  rental section, you will find pertinent information about the  boat  rentals, along with what to expect and  boating  costs. You’ll also want to check out our  Experience page  to discover all the exciting activities and recreation opportunities existing in the lovely and welcoming Virgin Islands.

Outstanding day on the water with Captain Shane. He took wonderful care of our group which was two families. We stopped at Lovango for lunch it was great and all spots for snorkeling were very nice. He was just an outstanding host, we will be back again because of Captain Shane.

Captain Jeremy and Jenny were a great crew! We had a great time traveling around snorkeling, swimming, and enjoying the tacos! The crew made the trip extremely fun (watched Jenny free dive 50 feet) and had the best day of our vacation. Would definitely recommend this day charter!

Took a day trip out of St John. We had Capt Morgan. Probably the best vacation day on St John! He took us around the island stopping at THE BEST spots to snorkel and see everything! Also took us (in time!) to the best lunch spot on the water. We highly recommend Capt Morgan

Had the best day with Captain Cody and Fist Mate Sarah! Picked up from Ritz Carlton beach and headed to Virgin Gorda. Did the Baths and it was so exciting! Lunch at Jost Van Dyke “Voodoo” and the on to Soggy Dollar. The whole family loved it all. Sarah and Cody were so friendly and full of stories and info. One of our best vacation days!

Set sail with your family and friends, and drift from island to island. This is truly the perfect location for yacht charter novices with a passion for sailing.

Renting a sailboat in the British Virgin Islands: your dream Caribbean sailing trip

The islands that make up the BVIs are mostly volcanic in origin, and form a true sailor's paradise. Surrounded by a crystal clear sea on one side and dreamy tropical landscapes on the other, the BVI is the perfect area for an island hopping adventure. Each of the countless islands are within sailing distance of each other, and yet each still has their own unique character.

The Virgin Islands, as christened by Columbus, are considered an ideal sailing area for beginners. Even the more exposed islands, namely Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Tortola, are able slow the trade winds and the Atlantic swell. This provides them with characteristics relatively similar to that of an inland area. These trips are all short enough to permit you to navigate with your eyes alone, and there is little to no risk of either tidal currents or fog hindering your journey. Any reefs and shallows are clearly marked and the translucent water provides an anchor bottom that is easily visible.

These islands live up to their title as a world-class holiday resort. There is so much to discover during your sailboat rental in the BVI. There are many small bays which are home to exquisite sandy beaches - perfect for anchoring your boat. Family crews especially appreciate the idyllic combination of sailing and swimming holidays.

On land, there is a great selection of pubs and resplendent restaurants for you to visit.

If you book a sailboat rental in the British Virgin Islands, you can’t miss out on visiting The Baths, located in the southwest of Virgin Gorda. Over the centuries, the Atlantic Ocean has washed away the huge granite stones, creating natural swimming pools.

The capital of the British Virgin Islands is Road Town, Tortola. The capital exudes a colourful Caribbean flair, enchanting all who visit with a mixture of sumptuous local cuisine and captivating local music.

Foxy’s on Jost van Dyke is famous among sailors from all over the world. Sailors from all over the world have left tokens and flags in the bar, which are representative of the rich history of the establishment.

Key information about the British Virgin Islands

The BVI is a Caribbean archipelago located between Puerto Rico and the Leeward Islands. The archipelago’s larger islands, namely Tortola, Beef Island, Cooper Island, Ginger Island, Norman Island, Peter Island, Salt Island, Virgin Gorda and Jost van Dyke are of volcanic origin and hilly. The highest peak in the BVIs is Mount Sage, located on Tortola. In contrast to the islands previously mentioned, Anegada is made up of stone corals and limestone which makes it relatively flat.

With more than 50 islands, the BVI is a British overseas territory with a governor and Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. The BVI has a population of 28,000, around half of whom live on Tortola. Columbus discovered these islands in 1492 and named them after Saint Ursula and her eleven thousand virgins (Santa Ursula y las once mil virgines), which gave the inspiration for their current name. But you will discover more than just Spanish history during your sailboat rental in the British Virgin Islands.

After the Spaniards, the Dutch settled on the islands. They later became an important stopover for ships sailing between America and Europe. At the end of the 17th century, the English occupied Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Anegada. In the past, the islands offered popular escape routes for privateers and pirates, due to the maze of hidden passages throughout. Today, tourism and offshore banking are the main sources of income. The local language in the BVI is English, and the currency is the US dollar.

The BVI is a perfect area for sailing. The Sir Francis Drake Channel and its outer islands offer a great deal of protection from the Atlantic swell. The turquoise sea water is clearand warm. There are beautiful bays with sandy beaches, black granite rocks, coral reefs and many wonderful bars and restaurants, for example, the Soggy Dollar Bar, Foxy's, Mad Dogs, Pirates Bight and of course Pusser's, where the famous Pusser's Rum is served and sold.

The BVI National Park Trust is primarily working to protect marine flora and fauna, as a lot of damage was previously caused by anchoring boats, especially in the coral reefs. Sailboats in the British Virgin Islands must acquire a National Park Mooring Permit through their charter company so that they can moor on special buoys. The buoys usually have a diameter of 33 centimetres and are colour-coded:

Orange: no diving, use of the buoy only during the day.

Yellow: only for professional shipping.

White: private yachts with crews who want to dive.

Blue: for dinghies only.

Large yellow buoys with a diameter of 89 cm: primarily for commercial ships between 55 and 80 feet in length.

For all buoys, a time limit of 90 minutes applies on a "first come, first served..." basis. Private yachts with an overall length of between 55 and 80 feet should not use the smaller buoys, but may moor on a large yellow buoy, which is otherwise reserved for commercial shipping.

Sailing conditions

As you set sail on your sailboat rental in the British Virgin Islands, you will be greeted by a pleasant, subtropical climate, with temperatures ranging from 25 to 30°C in the winter and 27 to 32°C in the summer. The trade wind will provide you with a fresh, cool, breeze that is present throughout the year, whilst water temperatures remain at around 25°C.

Wind conditions

The trade winds are constantly blowing in the BVI. In the summer, they come from the southeast with a strength of 3 to 4 Bft, and in the winter from the northeast with a strength of 4 to 6 Bft.

Water depths and Tides

On the windward side of the islands, the wave height is rarely more than 1.3 metres and is often less than 1 metre high in protected areas. The sea is mostly very calm in the Sir Francis Drake Channel. Coastlines and straits between the islands influence the direction and speed of the currents. Near the outermost points of the islands, currents can be up to three knots.

Special climatic conditions

From November to April, you may experience the notorious ground/northern swell, especially on the north coasts of the islands. These currents can cause yachts to suddenly collide together when anchored. Groundswells are announced in the local weather report. Hurricanes can also occur between July and November.

Must-see locations for your sailboat rental in the BVI

The 1780 Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum displays exhibits on sugar and cotton production and the slave era in the BVI. One department explains the islands’ maritime history. J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens is a small, peaceful garden which is home to a plethora of tropical plants, butterflies and birds.

Sunny Caribbee Spice Shop & Art Gallery offers spices, Caribbean sauces and tea. You can also find a variety of nice little souvenirs for family and friends at home.

The Allamanda Gallery Photo Exhibition. This place is responsible for the sale and shipping of photographs, maps and stationery with flora, fauna and landscape motifs of the BVI, taken by the photographer Amanda Baker, who arrived in the BVI in 1988 with a sailing yacht and stayed.

Bamboushay Pottery is a pottery shop selling ceramic items, lamps and plates all made in a Caribbean style.

Pusser's Bar, Restaurant & Store has a unique vibe and excellent views of the harbour of Road Harbour.

Callwood Rum Distillery has been producing dark and white speciality rum for over 200 years.

At 523 metres, Sage Mountain in the Sage Mountain National Park is Tortola’s highest peak. You can climb the mountain either on your own or with a guided tour.

The BVI Spring Regatta is a six-day event that usually takes place at the end of March or the beginning of April, starting at the Nanny Cay Marina.

Norman Island

Here, you will find the caves that are said to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island.

Pirates Bight Restaurant in The Bight boasts beautiful views of the bay.

Peter Island

Here you will find Peter Island Resort & Marina, which has many restaurants and a bar.

Salt Island

On Salt Island, you can dive and snorkel at the wreck of the Royal Mail Ship "Rhône". This ship, which is approximately 95-metre-long, was built in 1865 in England with an iron hull, and sank off the coast of Salt Island in 1867, due to a hurricane. The shipwreck was also a filming location for the 1977 film "The Deep", starring Jacqueline Bisset and Nick Nolte and directed by Peter Yates. This really is a must-see site during your sailboat rental in the British Virgin Islands.

Virgin Gorda

Devil's Bay (The Baths) National Park, are beautiful beaches with large granite rocks, small caves and natural pools for swimming and diving.

Gorda Peak and Gorda Peak National Park contain a variety of native and exotic plants, and have been extensively reforested with mahogany trees. An observation tower offers spectacular views of some of the surrounding islands.

Copper Mine on Mine Hill is found at the southeastern tip of Virgin Gorda. The mine was built in the 19th century by Cornwall miners and closed in 1862 due to profitability issues. Restoration work began in 1998.

The Bitter End Yacht Club & Resort, is a fully serviced marina with restaurants, bars, and boutiques, which is also visited by regatta yachts during the BVI Spring regattas.

Jost van Dyke

Diamond Cay, which became a National Park in 1991, is a well-known bird sanctuary. The 1.25-hectare park is a breeding ground for bird species such as terns, gannets and pelicans.

Foxy's Bar and Restaurant in Great Harbour offers freshly tapped beer from its own brewery and two speciality rums called Sly Fox and Dread Fox, where the rum for which is also made in-house. Local bands regularly play in the beach bar.

The Soggy Dollar Bar in White Bay has a restaurant and hotel. The name comes from the fact that you have to wade or swim through the sea to get to this bar. Here you get the original ‘Painkiller’ made from aromatic dark rum, cream of coconut, pineapple, and orange juice with a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg. The exact mixture for the recipe is, of course, kept secret.

Instead of the BVIs, Why Not The USVIs?.. A Cruising Guide

By: Shannon Sinnard American Sailing , Charter , Cruising Tips , Destinations

While the BVIs (British Virgin Islands) have long been renowned as one of the most popular and heavily traveled cruising grounds in the Caribbean, perhaps even the world, the USVIs (US Virgin Islands) have often gone unnoticed.

However, in recent years, the USVIs have witnessed a surge in popularity as a cruising destination, partly due to the introduction of fees and stricter regulations imposed by the British Virgin Islands… Changes that have sparked many a passionate discussion across numerous cruiser forums and social groups.

Alas, the golden era of carefree roaming between the British and US Virgin Islands is now a thing of the past. Perhaps one of the most notable laws enacted by these mandates is the requirement for sailors to undergo customs clearance when entering the BVIs from the USVIs. Thus, making them liable for customs duty on any “imported goods” they may have onboard, a category that could include provisions acquired in the USVIs.

Moreover, Charlotte Amalie (located in St. Thomas) is often the most accessible airport for travelers entering the British Virgin Islands. To reach Tortola, where most charter bases are located, a ferry or water taxi is often necessary. Many sailors are now finding, with the aforementioned changes and restrictions on cruising boundaries, the entire process has become cumbersome and inconvenient.

This has led many to consider the USVIs as their sole charter destination, rather than just a brief stop during a week-long (or longer) BVI exploration. And, with its distinct character and unique offerings, the USVIs undeniably earn the status of a standalone destination. Comprised of three main islands (St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix), each destination within these cruising grounds presents its own distinctive characteristics that set it apart from the others.

While the US Virgin Islands offer numerous anchorages and destinations to explore, in this article we will delve into a selection that, in the writer’s opinion, are popular spots not to be missed, or lesser-visited locales worth exploring.

St. Thomas, along with its main city, Charlotte Amalie, is steeped in pirate folklore and legends that add a fascinating element and sense of adventure to any visit to this region. While concrete historical records of specific pirate activities in the area may be sparse, locals are eager for the opportunity to share their stories as told throughout generations. Stories tell a tale of an infamous pirate named Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, who found sanctuary in their waters for a period of time years ago.

WATER ISLAND

A great deal of these legends surround our first stop at Water Island, located just across Crown Bay from Charlotte Amali. Rumor has it that during the 17th and 18th centuries, Water Island (then known as Orphanage Bay) was a popular haven for pirates and privateers. Rumor or not, it is hard to deny the island’s strategic location, just off the coast of the bustling port town of Charlotte Amalie, paired with its secluded coves would serve as an attractive hideout for pirates seeking to ambush incoming ships and seize their valuable plunder. Today, Water Island has transformed from its pirate-infested past to a relatively quiet oasis, offering a tranquil and secluded atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.

HONEYMOON BAY

The most popular destination on Water Island is Honeymoon (or Druif) Bay. This well-protected cove offers white sand beaches and plenty of entertainment during the daylight hours where, onshore, Dinghy’s Beach Bar serves as a lively oasis, blending refreshing island cocktails and offering an impressive menu of American fare to satisfy your appetite – perfect after a day of enjoying the various water toy rentals available here. Once the sun begins to set and the day boats disperse, Honeymoon Bay transforms into a more peaceful haven, allowing you to fully appreciate the stunning views of St. Thomas’ illuminated skyline against the backdrop of the night sky.

FLAMINGO BAY

For those looking to avoid the hustle and bustle of Honeymoon Bay, Flamingo Bay provides a quieter alternative. While not necessarily recommended for overnight anchorage, it does offer an ideal daytime stopover. Here, visitors can venture ashore and explore the historical remnants of Fort Segarra, constructed during World War II as part of the United States’ defense strategy in the Caribbean. Following marked paths on a short hike from the beach, you can uncover a fascinating network of tunnels, once underground bunkers, as well as remnants of ammunition storage areas and other military infrastructure.

rent sailboat virgin islands

GREAT ST JAMES

Christmas cove.

Next up is Christmas Cove, situated off Great St. James Island. This daytime hotspot has gained popularity in recent years, but still remains a must-visit destination. A sail trip in the US Virgin Islands simply isn’t complete without a slice from Christmas Cove’s renowned Pizza Pi pizzeria. This floating eatery has become a regional destination, with a completely converted interior, housing ovens, fridges, and even a bar. On the exterior, a network of sophisticated floating “booths” create a truly unique dining experience. Not wanting the landlubbers to miss out on the chance to savor a “piece of the pie,” Pizza Pi has even introduced their own water taxi, cleverly named Slice Slice Baby. Alternatively, if you prefer the convenience of having your pizza delivered directly to you, simply place an order under your boat name and your delicious hot pie will be promptly delivered via dinghy.

While this popular cove has admittedly become more and more congested in recent years, most likely due to increased water taxi traffic and the addition of Slice Slice Baby – the pizza party provider, it still holds its charm as a worthwhile destination. In fact, during peak months, you might even stumble upon a day when a local band performs live music from their boat, with concertgoers gathered in dinghies and floats around this buoyant concert venue.

rent sailboat virgin islands

Due to prevailing easterly winds in this region, Great St. James serves as a great jumping-off point to chart your destination south and make your way to the island of St. Croix, a vibrant and captivating island and one that merits a visit when cruising this territory. With the wind at your beam, this journey often provides ideal circumstances to hoist the sails, turn off the motor, and relish in a day’s passage across open water. Embrace the tranquility that accompanies the silence of turning off the engine. And be sure to keep a lookout for dolphins! They are a common sighting during this trip.

SALT RIVER BAY

Salt River Bay, a designated National Park, holds a storied past. It lays claim as the only documented landing site on US soil by Christopher Columbus, albeit an unpleasant one. As Columbus’s men disembarked in search of water, they found themselves confronted by the Carib Indians. The encounter turned into an altercation, which ultimately led to the enslavement of the native Caribs by Columbus and his crew.

Despite this unpleasant history, the present-day Salt River offers an unbeatable anchorage. Its natural harbor offers considerable protection and secure holding, making it a popular choice as a hurricane shelter during storms and high winds. However, there are a couple of factors to consider before visiting. Firstly, the bay’s water depths require caution and great attention, only suitable for boats with a shallow draft of less than five feet. Secondly, while the bay provides excellent shelter, the lack of sea breeze can mean muggy nights and pesky insects.

While  the offerings ashore might not admittedly warrant, this a “can’t miss destination.” Salt River holds a unique treasure in its surrounding waters. It is among a rare few on the planet that offers the unique opportunity to experience the wonder known as a bioluminescent bay. Here you can experience the mesmerizing glow of millions of tiny marine organisms known as dinoflagellates, whose natural chemical reaction when disturbed by movement in the water creates a mesmerizing glow. To experience this is truly magical and something unlike any other.

CHRISTENSTEAD

Christiansted is one of the two larger towns on the island of St. Croix. Not only does it provide a perfect location to access Buck Island (which is next on our list), but its waterfront boardwalk offers a plethora of activities and sights to enjoy before and after your visit to Buck Island. With its friendly local vibe and reputation as one of the most beautiful towns in the Caribbean, Christiansted has successfully preserved its visual charm depicting colonial days. The town showcases stunning old buildings, adorned in pastel colors, while the lively boardwalk houses a variety of bars, restaurants, and shops, making it an ideal spot to savor a (somewhat) cold beverage or enjoy a meal while observing the bustling activities both on land and in the water.

BUCK ISLAND

A small uninhabited island just a short jaunt from Christenstead, Buck Island is often THE destination for snorkeling enthusiasts planning a trip to the USVIs. This National Wildlife Refuge holds great significance in terms of natural beauty and marine life preservation. At least, President John F Kennedy must have thought so when he first visited and shortly thereafter, in 1961, established this location as a national monument. And it’s not only the underwater ecosystem here that is unique, but also the means of exploring it. The “underwater snorkel trail” is an underwater path marked by plaques and strategically placed floats for moments of rest. It offers an opportune method to view stunning coral and diverse marine life.

It is important to note that, to visit Buck Island, a permit must first be obtained. Applications can be submitted in advance online or can also be obtained in person at the National Park Service office near the fort in Christenstead. However, several online resources seem to indicate hesitation in relying on the chance of obtaining a same-day permit in person during higher seasons of travel.

To access the “underwater snorkel trail” off Buck Island, you will want to keep a lookout for markers south of the Island that will guide you through a narrow channel. This should only be attempted in a catamaran with small draft. At the end of the channel, you will find a collection of park-maintained mooring buoys that are free to use (or, at least, included in the fee you paid to visit). With the number of tour boats that visit this destination daily, keep in mind that at certain times it can be nearly impossible to find a mooring that is available (or one that won’t be claimed shortly by a tour boat returning with a boat full of fresh sightseers). It is advised to pay mind to the time of day that is popular for these tours and plan accordingly (hint: later in the day).

Two-thirds of St. John falls under the National Park Service, preserving its pristine beauty. Framed by stunning white sand beaches and tropical forests, many have long considered St. John their favorite and most treasured island, even predating the surge in Virgin Island sailing enthusiasts driven by the new mandates in the BVI region. The island’s beaches alone make it a standout destination. Boasting a plethora of breathtaking anchorages scattered around the island, if you seek tranquility and serenity, Little and Great Lameshur Bay are perfect choices. These bays offer a peaceful escape, where it’s not uncommon to spot tiny deer strolling along the beach. A day trip to Coral Bay promises a delightful experience, whether you choose to indulge in mouthwatering tacos at the renowned Lime Out Restaurant (an eccentric floating taco shack with an in-water bar and floating seating) or visit the beloved local favorite, Skinny Legs.

The main town of Cruz Bay is the largest and a convenient place to replenish your provisions if needed. However, attempting to access this town via Cruz Bay anchorage is ill-advised. This crowded bay offers limited opportunities for anchoring or mooring, as most mooring balls are private, and water traffic is ceaseless throughout the day. Instead, there are plenty of mooring balls dotting the coast north of Cruz Bay. These mooring balls are free during the daytime and many are just a short dinghy ride away from Cruz Bay. In Cruz Bay, you’ll discover a unique collection of shops, restaurants, bars, and galleries, while the colorful buildings with Victorian-style shutters create a charming atmosphere. Don’t miss a stroll through Mongoose Junction and Wharfside Village.

Maho Bay in St. John is a popular and picturesque anchorage that guarantees a captivating experience. With multiple moorings available, both in Maho Bay proper and the nearby Francis and Cinnamon Bay, you’ll find no shortage of options. The expansive, white sand beach is one of the largest on the island, and the turquoise waters offer a perfect snorkeling spot with plenty of opportunity to spot sea turtles. On shore, Maho Crossroads is a lively outdoor bar located right by the beach. Indulge in a refreshing drink from the bar and sample delicious bites from the assortment of food trucks. Immerse yourself in the laid-back island vibes, with the enchanting sound of steel drums filling the air, courtesy of Maho Crossroad’s occasional live music bands.

LOVANGO CAY

The newly opened Lovango Cay Resort & Beach Club feels like a private oasis, as it essentially is. Situated on the outlying Lovango Cay, this exquisite island and resort offers a tranquil refuge for visitors. With day passes available, you can fully immerse yourself in a life of luxury, enjoying the resort’s exceptional facilities, including luxurious spa treatments and a refreshing pool. And be sure not to miss out on a meal at their beautiful restaurant, offering unbeatable views overlooking the water with the island of St. John in the distance. What’s more, making a dinner reservation here comes with the added perk of an overnight mooring ball and water taxi service to and from your boat during high season.

While having only scratched the surface of what sailing in the US Virgin Islands has to offer, there is no doubt that anyone considering these islands for their next charter destination is in for a treat. Pelorus Private Island, Australia

  • Location: Palm Islands, Queensland, Australia
  • Why we love it: Private chef, snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, unique water sports equipment like Schiller water bikes

Open as of this January, this brand-new island hideaway is undoubtedly the most luxurious way to experience the Great Barrier Reef, offering exclusive access to a nearly 1,000-acre paradise that’s accessible only by helicopter or private yacht. The five-suite villa exudes a chic coastal airiness, with whitewashed shiplap, Palladian limestone, rattan, and Italian linens. All meals are prepared by a private chef—think artisanal bread, signature cocktails, and wine pairings at dinner—and you’ll have access to a stocked toy chest that includes kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, snorkeling and fishing equipment, and even Schiller water bikes (which is a bit like a bike mounted on two pontoons). If you want to explore beyond the island, you can book guided Jet Ski and Seabob tours, explore the Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA), or take a private boat charter to Hinchinbrook Island (Pouandai), Australia’s largest island national park.

The rustic-chic guest rooms and cabins each have their own unique decor: Some include log beds and stone fireplaces; others have botanical wallpapers and homey quilts. Those looking for even more privacy can opt to rent out one of the satellite islands: The two-acre Knapp Island Lodge has firepits, a kid’s glamping tent, and a handmade wooden canoe, while three-acre Van Reed Island boasts a four-bedroom summer home with wraparound decks and a rentable pontoon boat.
