The Sailing Grounds

Koh Samui, long known for its luxury spa retreats, tropical beaches, vibrant nightlife, and cozy island-time feel, has a secret; it’s also an excellent yacht charter cruising ground. It’s the diversity that makes it so unique; from Koh Pha Ngan’s white-sand beaches and crystal turquoise waters to world-class diving and snorkeling at Koh Tao, there is something for everyone.

The Ang Thong Marine Park offers breathtaking anchorages with its stunning limestone atolls, onshore walks, caves to explore by kayak and exotic wildlife.

Sailing conditions

The summer southeast monsoon places all the best anchorages in the lee for just these four months, offering you an endless choice of protected bays.

It’s an easygoing day sail between the three primary island groups; Samui & Pha Ngan, the Ang Thong Marine Park and Koh Tao, each being approximately 20 Nms apart, and it’s easy to spend several days at each destination.

Getting to Koh Samui

Koh Samui has an international airport with direct access to Singapore, Hong Kong and regional hubs.

For those that prefer overland travel, buses and trains run through the town of Surat Thani from Bangkok and Hat Yai (Phuket), then a taxi to Don Sak ferry can take an hour or so.

Yacht Charter Season

The yacht charter season kicks off in May and extends through to the end of August, and while the Indo-Malayan mountain range bears the force of the monsoon, Samui enjoys high-season weather while the rest of Thailand enjoys their green season.

Koh Samui Information and Resources

Island Spirit Yacht Charter – Koh Samui Base

The Island of Koh Samui does not have a marina. We moor our yachts in the sheltered bay of Bophut in the north of the island, home to the now partially gentrified Bophut Fisherman’s Village just 15 minutes away from Samui International Airport.

Our meeting point is at the end of the village road next to the Hansar Resort. We meet you to load all your gear to a dinghy and assist you out to your yacht. If you have enough crew, we can send some out to the yacht to get things organized, and the skipper and one crew can stay onshore to conduct the area briefing and then head out to the boat to finish with your yacht briefing.

Our team makes boarding from the beach easy; we help load all your gear and ferry everything out to the boat. However, being in touch for your arrival is essential to making things run smoothly, so please make sure you’re in contact with the base manager via Whatsapp. Fisherman’s Village offers many services, including:

Bophut Fisherman’s Village is a favorite for food and entertainment, so there is no rush to get going. Your yacht is already at an excellent place for your first night.

Your sailing itinerary will likely take you to the less traveled islands of Ang Thong Marine Park, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. But Koh Samui has a lot to offer, and spending a few days to enjoy the luxuries on offer is a great way to relax before or after your sailing adventure.

How to get to our Yacht Charter Base on Koh Samui

Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui is on the east side of the Malay peninsula or the South China Sea side. In contrast, Phuket is on the west side of the Malay peninsula, by the Andaman Sea on the Indian Ocean side.

Koh Samui is part of Surat Thani Province and sits about 20 nm off the coast and 650 km south of Bangkok. Samui has an International Airport, and being such a distance from Bangkok, most people choose to fly in, but there are other options, as noted below. There is no marina in Samui; we operate our charter fleet from the sheltered bay of Bophut, home to the now partially gentrified Bophut Fisherman’s Village of the same name.

Flying to Samui

The safest and quickest way to get to the Island Spirit Yacht Charter Base on Koh Samui is to fly to the Samui International Airport (USM). There are direct flight options from various Asian countries and good connections through Bangkok and Singapore. From the Samui airport, it’s only a 15-minute taxi ride to the Island Spirit Yacht Charter Base in Bophut. We can have a taxi waiting for you on arrival, or you can grab a private or join-in taxi at the airport.

Flying to Surat Thani

Surat Thani is a busy and prosperous province and has a domestic airport serviced by many airlines. Flights are cheap and frequent, and while it can appear to be an attractive alternative to flying into Samui International, the overland trip may add an entire day to your travel schedule. It is not particularly rewarding on any front; if time is of the essence, we do not recommend this option.

By luxury tour bus

If you prefer to travel by road and come from Bangkok, several tour bus companies offer “luxury” bus trips. They are economical as they operate overnight; you leave in the evening and arrive on the island in the morning. They are pretty comfortable; you’ll have an aircraft- like seat, there’s a toilet on board and some rest-stops along the way. The fare usually includes the ferry and a minivan ride to your destination on the island. Trains, busses and other means.

Thailand is full of adventure, and there are so many ways to get yourself around the place. The train system with its old-fashioned sleeping cabins can be a great option, and then there are bike tours, self-drive options, and so on. No matter which way you travel, all roads lead to Surat Thani. From there, take a private or join-in taxi to the ferry at the terminal at Don Sak.

The Seatran company operates a car-ferry service from Donsak to Koh Samui, taking around 2 hours. Two passenger ferries operate on this route. The Lompraya high speed ferry is a modern commercial catamaran which takes around 45 minutes. Songserm operates a wooden ferry, which is popular with younger backpackers and takes a bit over an hour.

When you arrive on Koh Samui, it is easiest to grab a taxi outside the terminal and have them take you to our charter base. If you want to provision on the way, we should book the transfer for you, because our drivers will stay in touch with us, they understand your objective, and know which shops to visit.

If you’re on Koh Samui before your yacht charter, we are happy to get a taxi to pick you up from your hotel. We have a team of trusted drivers who speak English well and know the island. We do our best to equip your yacht with everything you need to operate it safely and enjoy living aboard. Below is an inventory list of items included with your yacht as standard.

It is not necessarily an exhaustive list. So, for instance, your yachts’ galley is equipped with appropriate cooking utensils; pots, pans, serving trays, cheese graters, tea towels; we’ve tried hard to ensure you are not left wanting. We make up your cabins before you arrive with quality clean linens. Each berth has a personal blanket, bath towel, hand towel and fluffy pillow. If you would like additional linens, no problem, if you know in advance, book and include the fee when you make your booking, or just ask our staff assisting with your boarding. We also provide everything you need to operate your yacht and to deal with minor problems. Things like a spare anchor, toolbox, rope ties, bucket and deck brush, and spare winch handles. Of course, we’re on call to support you if required, but it’s nice to have the option to deal with the little things yourself.

Childrens life jackets

Comfort is the key to having a child accept wearing a life jacket, and they don’t work if they don’t wear them. If you’re sailing with a child that cannot swim, we strongly suggest that you invest in a quality, fitted life jacket for them and bring it with you. Island Spirit does have a selection of buoyancy vests suitable for some children; please book in advance to ensure availability.

Rental Gear

It’s nice to have some toys out there to explore the smaller nooks and crannies on your journey. A kayak can also add a great deal of independence as it provides a means for people to go ashore without needing the tender.

Island Spirit can organize additional rental equipment for your yacht charter to take your adventure at sea to the next level. Usually, you rent equipment for the entire duration of your charter. Whether you pay for rental gear when you pay for your charter or plan to pay at the base, book the items you want before arriving to ensure availability.

Snorkel equipment

Each yacht already has a full complement of mask and snorkel sets, and there is a selection of fins on the dock for you to choose from, so there is no need to rent this equipment. We also have a selection of children’s sets available in our office.

Two-person kayaks are available to explore the many islands, paddle to the beach, up the streams or drift among your tropical surroundings. Kayaks are a great addition to a charter with larger groups or lots of older children; it gives you a chance to escape for some peaceful exploration or a romantic getaway. Kayaks are stowed on deck (not towed) and come with paddles.

Stand Up Paddle Boards (SUP)

Step off your yacht onto the SUP and glide across the water’s surface. Explore the rivers, travel the coastlines, nooks and crannies or snorkel from your board around the smaller offshore islands and pinnacles. It’s a great way to experience the anchorages and surroundings while getting a little exercise. All our boards are over 350cm long x 80cm wide (11.5’ x31″), making it easy for beginners and children to learn quickly yet small enough for the experienced rider to enjoy. SUP rentals come with an adjustable paddle and leash.

Scuba Diving

We do not allow dive gear on the yachts due to the damage caused by dive tanks. However, talk with the Charter Coordinator to help organize diving trips with local dive operators. You must carry a PADI or equivalent certification to be able to dive on organized trips. Provisioning for your yacht charter on Koh Samui

Koh Samui has big modern supermarkets close by the base, so provisioning is easy and offers a pretty good selection of western delights! But that makes it so easy to go overboard, often literally, at the end of your charter because it’s also so lovely to eat ashore! It’s relatively economical to eat onshore, and with no preparation or cleaning up, you’ll have more time to enjoy your holiday.

Nonetheless, stocking your boat with food and beverage is crucial; it allows you flexibility and freedom to move around at your own pace.

How much do things cost?

Koh Samui is a bit of a foodie heaven; it offers an abundance of market and street food all the way through to five-star, fine dining. Once you head out to the other islands, there’s still a wonderful selection of resorts and restaurants, but the prices drop considerably; here’s a rough guide:

Most wine-by-the-glass is box-wine and costs 120 baht to 300 baht, depending on the style of the resort or bar you’re at. A bottle of wine costs about 800 baht in a supermarket and at least twice that in a restaurant. A small bottle of beer costs about 45 baht in a supermarket and from 70 baht up to 150 baht in a restaurant. Good quality Thai food can cost as little as 80 baht per person in a local street-side or beachside restaurant, where a meal in a flashy resort can cost anything from 1200 baht per person and more.

Tips for planning your menu

When planning your provisioning, consider that Thailand has a warm and humid climate, boat galleys have limited space, refrigerators are small, and storage lockers are few, so you need to optimize what you take and how you use it. Design a menu that shares many of the same base ingredients but delivers very different tasting meals. That way, you minimize the number of items you take on board. Keep the menu simple, so you don’t spend your holiday time in the galley trying to make magic happen. Here are a few tips:

• Don’t take too much fresh or cold food as your refrigerator space will be limited, and food left out will spoil in the tropical heat; salad doesn’t last long.
• Buy veggies that don’t require refrigeration, carrots, cucumber, potato, onion etc.
• Provision for all breakfasts and just one or two dinners aboard. Then have an array of cheese, cold cuts, nibbles & snacks along with fruit that does not require refrigeration, apples and the like.
• Often, the shops on the outer islands do not have a lot of stock.
• Get all the western delights before your charter because they are difficult to find once you leave Samui.
• Don’t buy ingredients to make Thai food; it’s much easier and more economical to go to a restaurant.

Provisioning

If you want to provision on the way, this is by far your best option, because our drivers will stay in touch with us, they understand your objective, and know which shops to visit. If you are coming directly from the airport, you’ll need to consider the available space you have, taking into account luggage. If you are a large group, drop the Skipper and First Mate off with the bags at the meeting point, and send the crew off provisioning after that.

Important note about purchasing Alcohol

Thailand restricts the sale of alcoholic beverages; you can purchase between 11am and 2pm or after 5pm to midnight. You can usually buy it all day in the smaller local shops.

Koh Samui has postcard sailing conditions from May through August, while the rest of Asia enjoys the wet season delivered by the southwest monsoon.

The mountainous terrain of the Malay peninsula to the west exhausts the monsoon winds of their rain and leaves Koh Samui and its surrounding islands basking in the sunshine with flat seas and a cool, steady breeze.

May through September

Weather conditions remain nicely tropical, with temperatures ranging from 30C in the daytime to 24C during the night. Wind can range from 10 to 25 knots, and although conditions remain mainly dry, afternoon squalls are common and predictable. Sailing conditions are relatively uniform throughout the season and can be more challenging than Koh Chang and Phuket.

The islands are 20nm apart, so the passage between islands can take most of the day. But the islands are big, so once you arrive, it’s easy to spend several days at just one, so there is no need to be sailing all day long every day; there’s plenty of bay hopping to do.

Overall, the Samui cruising ground is a great place to charter a yacht, with moderately challenging sailing conditions by day and beautiful tranquil anchorages by night. It is, without doubt, the best place to go sailing in Asia from May through September.

A full-day day sailing around Samui is the perfect way to see this beautiful tropical island from a different perspective. Heading north-east from the boat’s mooring in Bang Rak Bay, you pass the magnificent golden landmark of the Big Buddha and round the point at Laem Samrong, before heading down the east coast past the beautiful bays of  Thong Sai and Choeng Mon on to the spectacular 7 km stretch of palm-fringed, shimmering white sand that is Chaweng Beach – the island’s most famous and most developed to tourism.

As you sail south past one luxury resort after another, the stunning strip of white sand at Lamai leads around the coastline to the more wild and scenic south coast of the island with its   mountainous backdrop, palm plantations and fishing villages.  Just off-shore the islands of Koh Mat Sum [also known as ‘Pig Island’ for its pig population] and Koh Tean which are relatively untouched and offer beautiful beaches, snorkeling and rustic local seafood restaurants.

As you round south-west tip of the island and head north up east coast, the distinctive sight of the 5 Islands outcrop greets you as you sail on past bay after bay of white sandy beaches, lush jungle-covered hills dotted with luxury villas and the island’s main town and key ferry port Nathon.

With the spectacular limestone archipelago of Ang thong National Marine Park off to the west, you eventually round the north-west tip of the island and along the scenic and well developed north coast with its luxury beach resorts and mountainous backdrop back to Bophut.

A magical, mountainous island which looms large on the horizon from the north coast of Samui, Koh Pha Ngan is also known as ‘Full-Moon Island’ for its monthly beach party at the small town of Haad Rin on the south-east coast  which attract more 20,000+ visitors. 

Otherwise, the island is quiet and relatively undeveloped and scenically stunning with its lush, jungle-covered mountains and endless white sandy bays and beaches.

Sailing conditions on the more rugged and inaccessible east coast are ideal at certain times of the year when the south-west winds are blowing, at others, the west or sunset coast offers a different view with its low-hills and palm-fringed beaches and coves.   

Just north of Haad Rin on the south-east coast, the picture-perfect Haad Yuan bay is the perfect  destination from Samui for a day of sublime sailing, swimming and beach walking.  A charming, rustic beach resort Bamboo Hut nestles among the boulders on the north side of the bay and is a must-visit known for its challenging wooden walkway, bamboo terrace, colourful clientele and stunning vista of the turquoise bay and mountains.   

Sailing north from here, you pass deserted beaches in secluded bays, luxury resorts rub shoulders with small local resorts on stunning sandy stretches like Ao Thong Nai Pan or the picturesque Bottle Beach. 

Once you round the north-west tip of the island at Ko Mah – known for the island’s best snorkeling grounds – a string of idyllic palm-fringed bays and coves with wondrous names like Salad Beach and Secret Beach, are home to endless small resorts and delightful beachside  restaurants and ideal for anchoring and going ashore to eat.

Overnight Charter in a Luxury Boat

This conservation area of 42 jungle-covered karst [limestone] islands is an area of immense natural beauty just 28 km from the north-west tip of Koh Samui.  Seen from the north and west coast of Samui, the archipelago runs north to south like a chain of mysterious islands hovering on the horizon.    

Although many motorized boats make a day-trip fairly accessible, for sailing it’s a little too far for the day.  If you want to really explore this remarkable area with its myriad coves, caves, corals, lagoons, jungle-trails and beaches, plan on an overnight trip to experience it at its best. 

It’s a paradise for swimming and snorkeling among the corals and caves or taking to your paddle board for a leisurely tour of the enchanting coves and inlets that surround these extraordinary islands.  Your experienced crew will know all the best places to go, so you can relax knowing you are in good hands.

The area is a national park and a highly protected natural area, so an entrance fee is applicable to every vessel that enters, otherwise, most of the archipelago is relatively untouched with the only restaurant and tourism area being at Koh Ang Thong.

This is the place to pack a picnic, all the ingredients for a barbecue and sail off to one of the many stunning islands to anchor and enjoy the peace and quiet and natural beauty of Thailand and hopefully to catch one of Samui’s famously epic sunsets.

Koh Tao (“Turtle Island” in Thai) lives up to its name, being one of the greatest scuba diving destinations in southern Thailand. The perfect white-sand beaches which ring the hilly 21-sq-km island are surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Thailand. The compact island is about 60 km to the north of Samui and was only really “discovered” in the early 1980s, but now supports a varied selection of hotels, from budget guesthouses and beach bungalows up to 5-star luxury resorts. So far from civilisation and while still being relatively easily reached, it is the idyllic tropical island paradise.

Although popular for day tours by longtail boat from Thong Krut on Samui’s south-west coast, the small, neighbouring islands of Koh Mat Sum and Koh Tean are a little too far for a day-trip from the boat’s mooring in Bang Rak, so we recommend an overnight trip. 

Koh Mat Sum is basically one long white sand beach with clear shallow water which has become well-known amongst Instagrammers for its population of rescued pigs, hence its moniker ‘Pig Island’. 

 Just nearby Koh Tean is well-known for its walkway through the mangrove swamp and its rustic local restaurants serving fresh seafood caught by the island’s fishermen.

The beautiful tropical islands are surrounded by reefs and ideal for lazy days swimming, snorkelling, fishing and paddle boarding around the corals and beaches.  

Just to the west lies the distinctive group known as the ‘5 Islands’ on the south-west corner of Samui.  The waters around these precious bird’s nest collecting islands are deep and it’s fascinating to sail through the islands marveling at the small collectors’ shacks that cling to the steep cliff faces.

This was an absolute highlight of our Koh Samui trip. The guides went above and beyond to ensure an unforgettable time - passing us floats with beer and fresh fruit in the water, the stop at Pig Island, showing us the fish while snorkeling, the awesome picnic, fun music and catering to us needing to head back earlier. You can’t go wrong with this!!

What an awesome day out on the water for my wife, son, and I !! Our experience with GetMyBoat and the owner/operator Daniel exceeded our expections. His price for private speedboat rental was the best I found from the many operators on Koh Samui - it was fair with no additional "Hidden" fees. When we had questions about the trip Daniel responded quickly and using the GetMyBoat platform, notification emails were sent to us promptly so that we were always up to date with the booking. The boat was in great shape - and very comfortable. He went through a complete safety briefing before the trip and all the epuipment on board looked brand new. Lifejackets for all, including our little 3 y.o. was supplied and fit perfect. High quality snorkeling gear was also provided - not the cheap ones usually found on large scale tour boats. The trip itself was awesome - in large part due to his crew. They were GREAT!!! They took us to the best spots for snokeling and timed it so that the big tour boats were not there. We felt as if we had the entire reef to ourselves! They made sure to be watching us as we and our little one were swimming around - we felt very safe at all times with them! Drinks, food and a nice picnic were also provided and again the crew took care of everything for us. We really can't say enough good things about them !! Great guys!! Thanks again Daniel and his team for providing us with wonderful memories of a great Easter Sunday. We will DEFINETLY book another trip with Daniel when we return to Koh Samui!!

Koh Samui is one of Thailand's most popular island destinations. Facing the Gulf of Thailand, its waters are ideal for yacht charters, sheltered from typhoons and tsunamis. Though yacht and sailing enthusiasts love this island, its yachting charter industry is still in its beginning stages. In fact, there are no major marinas in Koh Samui just yet, but plans on developing a super marina are already in the works. Nevertheless, it hasn't discouraged tour companies and private yacht owners from setting dock on this famous Thai island. With smaller and exotic islands only a few minutes from the coast of Koh Samui, island hopping is the number one sailing activity during the dry season.

Why charter a yacht in Koh Samui?

While there are no major marinas in Koh Samui today, luxury resorts and private tour agencies do have small piers. Some of them even welcome international yachts and sailboats, offering basic sailing and mooring amenities. A major marina is set to open on the island soon, which is aimed at attracting more yachting enthusiasts to the island.

A number of tour companies and private yacht owners offer their personal yachts for charters in Koh Samui, ranging from speedboats to monohulls, catamarans, motor yachts, and superyachts. If you think chartering a yacht in Koh Samui will be a challenge, then think again. More and more private companies offer private yacht charters that offer sunset cruise, half-day, full-day, overnight, and multi-day charters for tourists who wish to enjoy the tropical island in style and luxury.

What are yacht charter prices in Koh Samui?

Prices in Koh Samui vary depending on the size of the yacht, the people on board, inclusions, activities, destinations, and rental duration. You can choose from a sunset cruise, half-day cruise, full-day or overnight cruise in Koh Samui. There are also multi-day cruises where you get to enjoy a different island every day on your itinerary. For a 4-hour half-day cruise on a 12-meter yacht for 16 people, the average price is between $850 to $1200. This does not include food and drinks or any water sport activities. When is the yachting season in Koh Samui?

Koh Samui is well outside the typhoon belt, so its waters are ideal for sailing all year-round. However, during the months of October to December, Koh Samui experiences the wet monsoon, or the rainy season, which means hopping from one island to another won't be so ideal. The best yacht charter season in Koh Samui is during the dry season, which is the months of March to September, with average temperatures ranging from 28 degrees to 35 degrees Celsius. This yacht charter seasonality is quite the opposite of Phuket island!

Koh Samui is best known for its laid back lifestyle, luxury villas, and boutique resorts. But when you've done the tourist attractions on the island, there's only one thing left to do, and that's to go island hopping off the coast. There are about 60 smaller islands near Koh Samui, each with their lush tropical jungles, pristine white beaches, secret lagoons, coves, and plenty of natural beauty to explore and discover.

A full-day yacht charter in Koh Samui can take you to the Ang Thong National Marine Park, a protected area with 42 islands, limestone mountains, and plenty of wildlife and sea creatures only found in the area. You can kayak, hike, and snorkel in the Park, where the list of activities to enjoy are endless. You can also head to Koh Pangan, which is an island famous for its moon parties. Further away is Koh Tao, famous for being a world-class dive spot and a popular yacht charter destination. At the same time, and perfect for half-day trips, nearby are Koh Madusm and Koh Taen, located only seven hundred metres to the southwest of Koh Samui.

An overnight yacht charter in Koh Samui is the perfect way to taste the island life. A timeline does not bound you as you have a complete 24 hours to enjoy the islands, and you won't cram your itinerary in only 8 hours, allowing you and your cohorts to bask in the glory of the beautiful islands nearby truly.

You can start your itinerary with a half-day excursion to the Ang Thong National Marine Park, have lunch in the majestic group of islands, and explore dive spots and secret beaches in the afternoon. You can then relax and chill on the deck at sunset, before you have a scrumptious dinner on board prepared by your crew, and end the night with drinks and cocktails before you rest your head in any of the luxurious air-conditioned cabins.

In the morning, you are served breakfast while your yacht makes its way to Koh Tao, where diving enthusiasts can witness turtles, stingrays, and reef sharks beneath the waters. You can then head to Koh Nang Yuan, which is about 90 minutes away, where you can experience the only island-to-island zipline in the world.
