Royal Yacht Britannia interiors

Many tourists wonder what’s inside the Royal Yacht before they book their tickets.

Some out of curiosity and some to know if a visit to Royal Yacht Britannia is worth it.

We list below some of the highlights of this Palace on water.

State Apartments

The State Apartments are the collection of rooms where the Royals lived or entertained their guests.

The Royal family relaxed in the State Drawing Room whenever they traveled together.

It also acted as a reception room for up to 250 guests.

The Verandah Deck was a private space for the Royals, where they could sunbathe or enjoy quoits or deck hockey.

This area of the ship also had a collapsible swimming pool for the Royal Family to splash around if they wanted.

Sun Lounge at Royal Yacht Britannia

The Sun Lounge was one of the Queen’s favorite rooms onboard HMY Brittania.

The beautiful teak-lined room was a designated family room and offered a lot of privacy from the rest of the ship.

This massive dining room onboard Britannia has played host to the world’s most influential people, such as Nelson Mandela, Sir Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, etc.

With its white paneled walls adorned with gifts received during State visits, this room represents ultimate luxury.

Engine Room at Royal Yacht Britannia

The Engine Room is a testament to British marine engineering skills because, until the ship got decommissioned in 1997, everything was working fine.

This room is full of gleaming brass, chrome, and white enamel with the ‘heavy stuff’ under the hood pumping 12,000 horsepower, which would help Britannia and her four-bladed propellers to a maximum of 22.5 knots.

Eight men operated the Engine Room, Boiler Room, and associated machinery rooms.

The 240 Officers and Yachtsmen on board Her Majesty’s Yacht Britannia sometimes had to change their uniforms up to six times a day.

This is why it was the only ship in the Royal Navy to have a laundry service permanently on board.

The laundry machines, dryers, and steam presses on the ship worked non-stop, and sometimes the temperature even went up to 48 degrees Celcius (118 degrees Fahrenheit)

Admiral’s Cabin at Royal Yacht Britannia

The Admiral was responsible for Royal Yacht Britannia’s safe functioning and commanded the 19 officers and 220 Yachtsmen who operated the ship.

He worked, entertained, and often ate (he couldn’t join the other officers in their mess unless invited) in the Admiral’s Cabin. Image: Royalyachtbritannia.co.uk

Royal Yacht Britannia's Bridge

The Bridge was HMY Britannia’s center of command and control on all her journeys.

From here, the officers reporting into the Admiral navigated, passed orders, recorded the logbooks, etc.

Back then, all Royal Navy ships had a Navy, Army, and Air Force Institute shop, known as the NAAFI.

The crew members and the officers would shop for their daily needs, such as toothpaste, shaving creams, magazines, etc. in this shop.

Royal Yacht Britannia

The Queen and the Royal Family’s vessel for over 44 years , the Royal Yacht Britannia has become one of the most famous yachts in the world.

A long life

Britannia was launched in Scotland in 1953 and, since then, has served the Royal Family on 968 official voyages , travelling over one million miles, stopping at 600 ports and in over 135 countries .

The Queen felt at home when she travelled on the vessel and the photos of her children and grandchildren still hang on the walls of the Britannia , as well as various personal items and gifts that were given to the family on their travels around the world.

Throughout its 44 years of service, Britannia has been a residence for official receptions, banquets, and State visits . For these events, 45 members of the royal household would climb on board with 5 tons of luggage.

In 1997, after over 40 years of service, the vessel was decommissioned and is now berthed at Leith Port where curious visitors can explore the majestic Britannia.

The visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia begins in the Visitor Centre found on the second floor of the Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre . In this centre, you’ll be able to discover the vessel’s past through numerous photographs.

Before visiting the Royal Yacht, you'll be given an English audio guide with all the details of the vessel.

Beginning with a visit to Britannia’s Bridge , visitors will also explore the State Apartments , the Crew’s Quarters, and finish at the Engine Room .

Although the Queen’s chambers are very plainly decorated, other parts of the vessel are extremely lavish, like the Rolls Royce that sits permanently in the vessel’s garage.

A ship like no other

Even if you're not passionate about boats, wandering through the Royal Yacht Britannia’s rooms will satisfy any inquiries about the Queen and the Royal Family you might have . Information such as who slept in what room, how many people worked on board, what visitors were invited to visit the Britannia and the countries it has visited, make for an entertaining tour.

The Royal Yacht Britannia Has a Fascinating History—Here's Everything You Should Know

It doesn't get more majestic than Queen Elizabeth II's yacht.

“Britannia is special for a number of reasons,” Prince Phillip once said. “Almost every previous sovereign has been responsible for building a church, a castle, a palace or just a house. The only comparable structure in the present reign is Britannia. As such she is a splendid example of contemporary British design and technology.”

Although she retired from service in 1997, today the Britannia, one of many of the world's grandest yachts , is docked in Edinburgh, where she is open as a visitors’ attraction and host of private events. Below we give you all the Royal Yacht Britannia facts you might want to know, from who owns the yacht now to why she was decommissioned to how fast she is to how to get tickets to visit. Britannia was, after all, the one place the queen said she could “truly relax,” so why not see why for yourself?

Royal Yacht Britania Facts and History

On February 4, 1952, John Brown & Co shipyard in Clydebank, Scotland, received the order from the Admiralty to build a new Royal Yacht to travel the globe and double as a hospital ship in times of war, according to the royal yacht's website . King George VI passed away two days after, sadly, and so on April 16, 1953, the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II announced the yacht’s new name as the ship was revealed.

"I name this ship Britannia,” she said. “I wish success to her and all who sail in her." Britannia was commissioned into the Royal Navy in January 1954 and by April of that year sailed into her first overseas port: Grand Harbour, Malta.

royal yacht britannia facts staircase

The queen and The Duke of Edinburgh worked with interior designer Sir Hugh Casson for the ship to serve as both a functional Royal Navy vessel and an elegant royal residence. Queen Elizabeth II selected deep blue for Britannia’s hull, instead of the more traditional black. Its Naval crew included 220 Yachtsmen, 20 officers, and three season officers—plus a Royal Marines Band of 26 men during Royal Tours.

All of them might have had to change uniform up to six times a day, so the laundry service on board worked nonstop. The yacht also engaged in British overseas trade missions known as Sea Days and made an estimated £3 billion for the Exchequer between 1991 and 1995 alone.

royal yacht britannia facts drawing room

The ship’s wheel was taken from King Edward VII’s racing yacht, also named Britannia, according to Boat International , and the 126-meter ship could reach speeds of 22.75 knots, or a seagoing cruising speed of 21 knots, according to Super Yacht Times . Other fun facts: The yacht could produce her own fresh water from sea water, and shouting was forbidden aboard to preserve tranquility, favoring hand signals for Naval orders instead.

royal yacht britannia facts dining room

Over the next 44 years, the Britannia would sail the equivalent of once around the world for each year, in total visiting 600 ports in 135 countries. Princess Margaret and Anthony Armstrong-Jones were the first of four couples to honeymoon on the ship in 1960, gifting them all privacy to sail to secluded locations. Prince Charles and Princess Diana followed in 1981 on the Mediterranean as well as Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips before them in 1973 in the Caribbean and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson in 1986 in the Azores.

For family vacations aboard the ship, games, treasure hunts, plays, and picnics were organized, and on warm days the children could play in an inflatable paddling pool on the Verandah Deck.

royal yacht britannia facts sun lounge

In the Sun Lounge, the queen especially enjoyed taking breakfast and afternoon tea with views through large picture windows, a space you can see replicated in the TV show The Crown. Although no filming took place on board the Britannia for the show, researchers ensured scenes aboard it were accurate. In the queen’s bedroom, the resemblance is seen down to the decorative wall light fittings and embroidered silk panel above her bed that had been specially commissioned.

queen crying at britannia

In 1997, the ship was decommissioned after the government decided the costs to refit it would be too great. On its final day in her service that followed a farewell tour around the U.K., the queen openly wept as the Band of HM Royal Marines played "Highland Cathedral."

"Looking back over 44 years we can all reflect with pride and gratitude upon this great ship which has served the country, the Royal Navy and my family with such distinction," Queen Elizabeth II said. All clocks on the ship stopped at 15:01, the exact time the Queen disembarked from the yacht for the final time, and they would remain at that time until the present.

The Best Private Yacht Charters for Small Groups

By Fran Golden

Halcon del Mar by Red Savannah Private Cruise

While much of the cruise industry halted operations in the last year , it didn't mean that all sailings stopped. For families or pandemic-era bubble groups who wanted a sunny getaway on the water, a trend emerged: renting out entire yachts , complete with crew, for a new kind of custom sailing.

Exploring destinations around the world on a private yacht with your kids, and maybe another family or two, is both a luxurious and practical way to travel these days. The sea turns into your personal playground, and your captain will steer you to islets and beaches away from the crowds. On board, you can spend time together in a pleasant, contained environment—plus, no one has to cook. Bring on the movies and board games!

Best family yacht: our pick of the best yachts for sailing with the family

  • Toby Hodges
  • March 7, 2024

Toby Hodges takes a look at all the nominees and the winner of the best family yacht category in the European Yacht of the Year Awards

There are many categories in the European Yacht of the Year awards, from the  best luxury yachts  to  performance yachts . But some of the most hotly-anticipated options come when it is time to choose the nominees and winner in the best family yacht category.

The European Yacht of the Year awards are selected by a broad panel of expert judges from across the globe. These are people who spend their professional lives sailing and comparing yachts, so you can be certain that the yachts which stand out in this field are truly the best of the best on the market for those looking to set out with the whole family in tow.

A crop of the latest 35-45ft mainstream production yachts, including the ultra spacious Dufour 41 and the smaller sister to the award-winning Hanse 460, plus a couple of less well known yachts, made for a dynamic grouping this year when it comes to picking the best family yachts 2024.

In this, the most competitive size bracket for volume production yachts, there was plenty to like, but two models stood out: the RM and the Bavaria. The former because it’s different and fills an interesting niche that crosses fast cruising with family sailing, from coastal and shoal draught to bluewater sailing ability; the Bavaria because it masters that mix of deck and interior space, performance and handling in a well finished package.

Winner of the best family yacht 2024 – Bavaria C46

The Bavaria and Cossutti Yacht Design relationship continues to flourish and produce standout results in its second generation. The C46’s modern, full shape brings vast deck and accommodation space yet manages to do so on a hull which really performs for its size, and rewards the helmsman with direct feedback.

During my trial we had a good mix of conditions and were able to push the boat, a voluminous hull which becomes reactive once the breeze threatens double figures. We were able to press it during a rain squall, hitting 12 knots in 18 under gennaker, and maintained lengthy double digit spells during some enjoyable sporty sailing. Bear in mind this is a single-rudder boat, yet it still didn’t overpower or lose its grip. It’s impressive, especially given the exceptionally low ballast ratio (20%), which shows the reliance on form stability.

“The chine is a bit higher than the C42 and we tried to make the wetted surface as small as possible,” Maurizio Cossutti told me during our trial. The keel is also comparatively lighter, slimmer and deeper for a sporty feel. It’s clear the German yard has really poured its engineering energy and might into this build – from design to engineering to finish quality, the perceived richness of the C46 stands out (although dressed with over €200,000 of options, this is still no mean feat in a mass production size and brand). So much so that other big yards may struggle to compete.

You could argue the Dufour 41 does that to some extent, but here the emphasis is slightly more skewed towards volume, while it doesn’t quite match the Bavaria for the overall engineering and finish quality. Felci somehow managed to swell the forward sections enough to allow the Dufour to be the first 40-footer to offer four cabins, including two doubles forward. We then learned in September that Dufour had signed a new contract to supply Sunsail charter yachts, which helps explain the draw of all this extra accommodation space.

The price for this is extra weight. Although equipped with a tall rig, the 41 only becomes reactive once the breeze is up to the mid teens, where it can lean onto a chine and employ its generous form stability. But for those after volume, max deck lounging space and a bright spacious interior for multiple guests, it’s a hard model to compete with at this size (full report in YW September 2023 and online).

On paper the Hanse 410 should perhaps have challenged the Bavaria more. It’s the latest in Hanse’s new collaboration with Berret-Racoupeau, follows on from the larger sister 460 which won this category in 2022, and shares that appealing modern hull shape. It showed respectable performance and figures, and proved easy to manage short-handed, thanks to the self-tacking jib and winches positioned to hand.

A halyard issue with the mainsail and a tangled sock for the kite curtailed my sail trials somewhat. We also found the cockpit quite busy, particularly the winch layout, although it is nice and deep for protecting its crew. It makes you query why you need two tables on a 40-footer – until you see them lowered to create sun beds, that is!

Stand out features from the interior were the number of stowage solutions, particularly on the two-cabin test boat. Offered as two or three cabins with one or two heads, the former provides a huge amount of stowage accessible from the cockpit or interior. There’s more in the galley and a multifunction space in the saloon, which can be a full length sofa berth, a proper chart table, or a standing desk with storage below.

Beneteau Oceanis 37.1

The Beneteau Oceanis 37.1 is also all about easy sailing and handling, and proved to be a fun, manageable sized cruiser, particularly the First Line option we tried, which increases sail area with a square-top main and flat deck furler. While certainly an accessible yacht, it perhaps comes across as a little basic. This is the last Oceanis in the new generation eight-boat range between 30ft and 60ft, so the focus is more on evolution than the revolution of its early predecessors. Hence the two- or three-cabin interior seemed a little unremarkable when viewed against the opposition.

The same could not be said for the RM 1380, particularly when you step down the companionway – which doesn’t really feel like going below decks on a conventional monohull as it’s so naturally bright in the raised saloon and helps you appreciate your surroundings. So much so it’s more like being on a multihull. The doorways are a little tight, but the double cabins are of good size thanks in part to the generous beam. The standard two-cabin layout has a practical utility space in place of the optional third cabin.

I’ve long appreciated the plywood epoxy technique RM uses for its hulls, together with the powerful form stability Lombard’s design brings. This comes with the choice of keels, including the shoal draught options of a lifting centreboard or efficient twin keels. We tried the latter and the result on the water is in keeping with the sporty looks: it’s an enjoyable mid-displacement cruiser to sail from the aft quarters. Then there’s the superb winch layout, which sees the primaries positioned inboard for use standing under the protection of the coachoof and sprayhood. For offshore sailing the open transom can be closed off with a platform. It’s not perfect, but the RM is intriguing and versatile.

Elan Impression 43

Another memorable interior is to be found on the Elan Impression 43. The rustic knotted oak finish is unique, the only option Elan offers and something the Slovenian yard wanted style gurus Pininfarina to maintain to identify it from the sportier ranges. Personally, I like the strong focus on timber as it helps showcase Elan’s heritage, but appreciate it won’t suit all tastes.

These mid size Impressions are the mainstay of Elan’s sailing range, the family and charter staples for the Med. This Humphreys-designed update has a modernised shape, but retains the older style and the hull rocker to keep a soft, smooth sailing experience. It’s rigged with a genoa or self tacker and two to four winches. Although somewhat unremarkable in terms of sailing performance, it fits its purpose, while the increased aft beam allows for larger aft cabins and a service tunnel between them.

2 person yacht

In an age where we need to focus on making things last, my preconceptions of the Maxus 35 revolved around questioning the need for a lower budget Polish build. Why not just buy a proven second-hand yacht? That said, the Northman shipyard has done a respectable job on this, the largest Maxus yet, in terms of the build and finish for the price. It feels solid throughout, the interior is light and inviting and it is worth consideration as an entry level yacht with reasonable accommodation.

I can also see some appeal of the centreboard design for lake sailing. However there was little to take home with regards to the design or sailing experience, so my conclusions mirror my first thoughts.Best family yacht 2023

Best family yacht 2023

Best family yacht winner – linjett 39.

This is quite possibly the best boat you haven’t heard of. The 39 offers easy, fast family cruising and occasional racing in luxurious comfort and proves that classic needn’t be old fashioned.

Linjett exudes Scandi heritage: a third generation 50-year-old brand, it’s run by three brothers and has built 900 yachts from its Rosättra yard in Sweden, which dates from to the 19th Century. Its business model is based on long production runs – think evergreen rather than trendy. Linjett not only designs, engineers and builds its own boats, but services and maintains them too, with 220 in winter storage. It also now produces the high performance Shogun Yachts in carbon epoxy, which hints at the skill levels of its infusion techniques.

A telling result at sea is how quiet the yacht is. Sturdy and stable, it instils instant confidence and proved a delight to sail. We had some very pleasant upwind beats, pointing high, and some lively reaching, hitting double figures a few times while pushing it under 150m2 gennaker in waves. The Linjett is set up to easily short-hand it too, with two winches and a bank of clutches each side positioned aft in reach of the helm.

The interior is offered with two or three cabins and the latter we saw had an excellent layout, including separate shower/wet hanging compartment aft. Joiner work is first class, with traditional mahogany used as standard, or the more contemporary European Oak on the test boat.

This is a premium yacht, but you get what you pay for. It will surprise most and ensure everyone steps ashore smiling. See our full review next month.

The Dufour 37 may be shorter than the old 360, but Dufour was reluctant to brand this 37 as smaller because its modern, broadened hull shape has resulted in an enlarged deck space, cockpit and owner’s cabin. Felci has designed a clever hull that sails well with good performance for its (34ft) size. The aft quarters behind the helms feel compact to maximise cockpit size, but proved comfortable enough to sail from. The primaries are in reach of the helm and we liked the lightweight, low friction jib sheet adjusters.

The 37 is offered in Easy (two winch), Ocean (cruising), or Performance versions and with a two- or three- cabin layout. The test boat was the most popular Ocean model, although it had €100,000 worth of optional extras including sails, engine and bow thruster, resulting in an expensive yacht for its length.

For those who recognise the Bente name, we previously featured it in detail in 2015 when it burst onto the scene with an innovative and affordable new 24-footer (around 150 of which have been built in Poland). We then tested its 39 in 2019, a year before the yard then filed for bankruptcy. But it’s now back under new ownership with this really impressive and more refined Bente 28, again by Judel/Vrolijk.

It’s a fun yacht to sail, easy to short-hand, with sprightly performance, especially when reaching. The coachroof is part of the deck structure and proves crucial in providing light, space and headroom below in an ergonomic interior that has been very well thought out.

All in all it’s a great compact, entry-level cruiser, with a practical, well protected cockpit.

Advantages of a two-person crew yacht: a perfect blend of freedom and intimacy.

January 7, 2024

6 minute read

The freedom to craft a highly versatile and customizable itinerary, thanks to the manoeuvrability of smaller vessels, provides a level of flexibility that is often unmatched by larger yachts. This, coupled with the increased intimacy, closer connection to the sea, and a truly yachting-centric experience, sets the stage for a holiday that goes beyond the conventional, with two-person crew yachts.

SuperYachts Croatia’s catalogue of two-person crew yachts brings forth a perfect blend of exclusivity, comfort, and affordability. The absence of a dedicated chef encourages a hands-on approach to dining , adding a personal touch to the culinary aspect of the journey. While communal spaces may require a bit of creativity, the trade-off is a more intimate atmosphere where guests can forge lasting memories with their travel companions.

Advantages of a Two-Person Crew Yacht

More freedom.

The advantage of a two-person crew yacht lies in the unparalleled freedom it affords to its guests. With a smaller crew, individuals can exercise greater control over their itinerary, enabling spontaneous changes and impromptu detours. This flexibility is often challenging to achieve with larger yachts that adhere to more structured schedules. The two-person crew setup thus enhances the overall experience by allowing guests to tailor their journey according to their preferences.

tamara ii yacht charter aerial view

Increased Maneuverability

Smaller vessels, characteristic of a two-person crew yacht, possess a shallow draught, granting them access to secluded beaches and bays that may be inaccessible to larger yachts. The ability to navigate through shallower waters opens up a realm of hidden gems, ensuring that the yachting experience is not only luxurious but also exploratory. For example, yachts bigger than 30 meters will have a hard time anchoring anywhere near Sakarun beach on Dugi otok island, considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the Croatian Adriatic .

This increased manoeuvrability adds an adventurous dimension to the voyage, enhancing the overall appeal for those seeking unique and secluded destinations.

Intimacy Redefined

The two-person crew yacht offers a more intimate yachting experience, catering to those who seek exclusivity. With fewer cabins, the atmosphere becomes more private, fostering a sense of camaraderie between guests and crew. This intimacy allows for a more personalized and attentive service throughout the journey, creating a memorable and closely-knit atmosphere on board.

A True Yachting Adventure

Tailored for adventurers, a two-person crew yacht provides an immersive yachting experience. Guests can engage in activities such as snorkeling, kayaking , or simply sunbathing on the deck without the distractions of a larger group. This close connection to the sea enhances the overall sense of adventure, appealing to yachting enthusiasts who yearn for a more hands-on and authentic experience.

Economically Viable

Opting for a two-person crew yacht not only delivers a unique and tailored experience but also proves economically viable. The reduced crew requirements translate to lower operational costs, allowing individuals to enjoy the luxury of a private yacht without a significant financial burden. This economic efficiency makes the two-person crew yacht an attractive option for those seeking an exclusive yachting experience within a more reasonable budget.

No Compromises on Comfort

Contrary to common misconceptions, two-person crew yachts strike a perfect balance between exclusivity and comfort. While providing the intimacy and freedom associated with smaller vessels, these yachts do not compromise on the comfort and amenities typically found on larger yachts. Guests can enjoy the benefits of a private and personalized journey without sacrificing the luxurious features that contribute to a comfortable and enjoyable yachting experience.

While the advantages of a two-person crew yacht are undoubtedly compelling, it’s essential to consider a few trade-offs:

Disadvantages of a Two-Person Crew Yacht

One of the notable cons of a two-person crew yacht is the absence of a dedicated chef on board. Unlike larger yachts that often come equipped with professional culinary staff, guests on a two-person crew yacht may need to take charge of their meals.

hope i yacht charter galley

While this can be an exciting experience for those who enjoy cooking, it also means that guests need to plan, prepare, and clean up after their own meals. For some, this self-sufficiency might add an extra layer of effort to their yachting vacation, particularly during the evenings when elaborate dinners are usually expected.

Limited Guest Capacity

The appeal of a two-person crew yacht lies in its exclusivity and intimate atmosphere. However, this exclusivity comes at the cost of limited guest capacity. With fewer cabins available, these yachts are better suited for smaller groups or couples.

Jantar yacht charter lower deck hallway

If you’re planning a gathering with a large number of friends or family members, a two-person crew yacht may not be the most practical choice, as it may lack the necessary accommodations for everyone.

Space Constraints

Smaller yachts naturally come with space constraints. While this might contribute to a cosy and intimate ambience, it could also mean that communal spaces are limited. Guests may need to be more mindful of sharing common areas, and the yacht’s layout may require some improvisation to ensure everyone has a comfortable and enjoyable experience. This can be a consideration for those who prioritize spacious living areas on a yacht.

Fewer Amenities

While two-person crew yachts offer a range of amenities, they may not match the variety and abundance found on larger vessels. This can be particularly relevant when it comes to water toys and recreational facilities.

maoro yacht charter view from above, two-person crew yacht

If you are someone who enjoys an extensive selection of toys, gadgets, and entertainment options, a two-person crew yacht might feel a bit more poor down in comparison.

Why Book a Two-Person Crew Yacht with SuperYachts Croatia

It is important to acknowledge the cons associated with booking a two-person crew yacht and the unique advantages offered by SuperYachts Croatia. This makes it a compelling choice for those seeking an unforgettable charter holiday in Croatia.

2 Person Catamaran Sailboat: The Ultimate Guide for Sailing Enthusiasts

by Emma Sullivan | Aug 18, 2023 | Sailboat Gear and Equipment

2 person yacht

Short answer: 2 person catamaran sailboat

A 2 person catamaran sailboat is a type of watercraft designed to be piloted by two individuals. Featuring two parallel hulls connected by a deck, these sailboats offer increased stability, speed, and maneuverability. Commonly used for recreational purposes or racing, they provide an exhilarating sailing experience for both beginners and experienced sailors alike.

Choosing the Perfect 2 Person Catamaran Sailboat: Factors to Consider

Choosing the right 2 person catamaran sailboat can be a thrilling yet challenging endeavor. With so many options available in the market, it’s crucial to carefully evaluate various factors before making a decision. This blog post aims to equip you with the necessary knowledge to make an informed choice, narrowing down your search for the perfect sailing partner.

1. Size Matters: When selecting a 2 person catamaran sailboat, size is a foremost consideration. You want to ensure that both you and your sailing companion have ample space on board without feeling cramped or restricted. Optimal comfort and ease of maneuverability are key factors that determine the ideal size for your vessel.

2. Purpose: Determine what activities you plan on indulging in while sailing together. Are you seeking adrenaline-pumping adventures like racing, or do you envision leisurely cruising across serene waters? Consider the purpose for which you will be using the catamaran sailboat as it will greatly influence specific design features required.

3. Stability Sells: Catamarans are known for their exceptional stability compared to monohull boats, making them an excellent choice for those prone to motion sickness or simply desiring a smoother ride. Look out for models with wider hulls and sufficient stabilization features to guarantee maximum stability during varying weather conditions .

4. Performance & Speed: If exhilarating speed is more your style, focus on catamarans with sleek designs optimized for performance . Enhanced hydrodynamics, lightweight construction materials, and well-balanced weight distribution play critical roles in achieving higher speeds and superior maneuverability through waterways.

5. Reputation & Reliability: Before committing to any brand or model, research manufacturer reputation and reliability extensively. Seek feedback from experienced sailors, scour online forums dedicated to yacht enthusiasts, and take note of testimonials from previous customers who have sailed aboard their chosen 2 person catamaran sailboats.

6. Budget Considerations: Keeping track of your budget is imperative. While catamarans can range from reasonably priced to exorbitantly expensive, establishing a pre-determined budget will streamline your search and avoid disappointment later on.

7. Customization Options: Some sailing enthusiasts want their boat to be an extension of their personality and preferences. If you fall into this category, consider brands that offer customization options, allowing you to tailor the catamaran sailboat to your specific needs and desires.

8. Storage & Convenience: Attention should also be given to storage capacity onboard the catamaran. Evaluate whether there is sufficient space for stowing essential equipment, personal belongings, and supplies required for long journeys or extended stays at sea. Additionally, assess the convenience of access points and ergonomic design features that enhance functionality while onboard.

9. Maintenance & Upkeep: Owning a 2 person catamaran sailboat comes with its fair share of maintenance responsibilities. Factor in the costs associated with regular servicing, repairs, and overall upkeep when considering different models. Choosing a boat with easily accessible spare parts might save you time and money in case any replacements are needed down the line.

By taking all these factors into account when choosing your ideal 2 person catamaran sailboat, you’ll ensure an unforgettable sailing experience perfectly tailored to your needs. So weigh your options wisely, set sail confidently, and let the wind carry you towards endless adventures on the open seas!

A Step-by-Step Guide to Sailing a 2 Person Catamaran Sailboat

Title: A Step-by-Step Guide to Sailing a 2 Person Catamaran Sailboat: Harnessing the Power of the Wind in Style!

Introduction: Sailing offers an exhilarating experience like no other, and mastering a catamaran sailboat takes your adventure to a whole new level. With its unique design and twin hulls, a 2 person catamaran sailboat grants you unprecedented speed and maneuverability on the open waters. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll unravel the secrets to piloting this sleek vessel, empowering you to glide across the waves with confidence and finesse.

Step 1: Preparing for Takeoff – Understanding Your Catamaran Sailboat Before embarking on any sailing excursion, it is crucial to familiarize yourself with your vessel. A two person catamaran sailboat generally consists of two parallel hulls joined by a sturdy trampoline or deck. These twin hulls provide incredible stability while offering less resistance against the water’s surface.

Step 2: Setting Sail – Rigging Like a Pro Now that you’re acquainted with your catamaran sailboat ‘s anatomy, it’s time to prepare it for action. Begin rigging by attaching the mast securely into its designated slot at the front of each hull. Once secure, ensure proper tension in all lines – halyards, sheets, and traveler control lines – paying careful attention not to overtighten.

Pro Tip: Use brightly colored lines for easy identification during more challenging maneuvers .

Step 3: Hoist those Sails – Unleashing Nature’s Power With your catamaran properly rigged, it’s time to hoist those sails! The mainsail is generally larger than its jib counterpart. Start by loosening all sail control lines before gradually raising the main halyard until it catches wind effortlessly – make sure not to overdo this part! Simultaneously hoist the jib, adjusting its tension for optimal performance .

Step 4: Finding Balance – Seating and Weight Distribution Sailing a two person catamaran sailboat requires effective weight distribution to maintain stability. Position yourself and your partner near the back edge of the trampoline- seating just ahead of the rear crossbar ensures better control. By leaning out together, you can counteract the heeling force generated by the wind.

Step 5: Embracing Grace – Steering with Finesse To steer your catamaran sailboat gracefully through the water, grip the tiller extension firmly in one hand while bracing yourself against foot straps on either hull. Maintain a relaxed posture, allowing your body to instinctively respond to changes in wind speed and direction . By actively shifting your weight during turns, you’ll navigate through tack (turning into and through the wind efficiently) or gybe (turning away from it) like a seasoned sailor.

Step 6: Riding High – Capturing Optimal Speed With each gust of wind propelling your catamaran forward, mastering speed becomes paramount. Learning to trim sails effectively plays a pivotal role here – adjust both main and jib sails according to wind changes. When navigating upwind (sailing toward where the wind is coming from), trim them tightly for efficient aerodynamics; during downwind runs (sailing away from or at an angle to where the wind comes from), set them looser while keeping an eye on potential luffing – when sails flutter uncontrollably due to insufficient air pressure.

Conclusion: As you embark on your journey towards becoming a skilled catamaran sailboat sailor, always prioritize safety alongside fun. Remember that practice makes perfect! Harnessing nature’s power with confidence demands patience, persistence, and continual learning. So embrace this thrilling adventure with open arms and let the winds guide you towards endless possibilities on your magnificent 2 person catamaran sailboat!

Frequently Asked Questions about 2 Person Catamaran Sailboats Answered

Catamaran sailboats have been gaining popularity among sailing enthusiasts in recent years, and it’s not hard to see why. These sleek, twin-hulled vessels offer an exhilarating sailing experience unlike any other. If you’re considering getting a 2 person catamaran sailboat but still have some lingering questions, fear not! In this blog post, we’ll be answering the frequently asked questions about 2 person catamaran sailboats to help clear up any confusion.

1. How does a catamaran sailboat differ from a traditional monohull sailboat?

The most noticeable difference between a catamaran and a monohull sailboat is the number of hulls. While monohulls have one hull that cuts through the water, catamarans feature twin hulls that are connected by a rigid platform called the bridge deck. This design provides greater stability and minimizes heeling (the boat tilting sideways) that is often experienced with monohulls. Additionally, catamarans typically offer more living space both below and above deck.

2. Are 2 person catamarans suitable for beginners?

Yes! 2 person catamaran sailboats can be an excellent choice for beginners due to their stability and ease of handling. With two hulls providing balance, these boats are less likely to capsize compared to monohulls. Moreover, their shallow draft allows for exploring shallower waters without worrying about grounding.

3. Can I solo sail a 2 person catamaran?

Absolutely! One advantage of having two people on board is that it allows for easy solo sailing if desired. Catamarans are designed with simplicity in mind, making them ideal for single-handed sailors who want greater maneuverability without compromising safety.

4. How fast can a 2 person catamaran go?

Thanks to their lightweight construction and efficient design, 2 person catamarans have impressive speed capabilities. Depending on weather conditions and sail configuration, these vessels can easily reach speeds of 10 to 15 knots (18 to 28 kilometers per hour) and even higher in optimal conditions. Hold on tight, as you’re in for an exhilarating ride!

5. Are catamarans suitable for overnight stays?

Absolutely! Catamarans are known for their spaciousness and comfort, making them perfect for overnight trips. Most 2 person catamarans offer comfortable sleeping quarters, a galley for cooking meals, and plenty of storage space. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a more extended voyage, these boats have got you covered.

6. Can I race a 2 person catamaran?

Definitely! Racing catamarans have become increasingly popular within the sailing community. If you’re feeling competitive or just want to test your skills against others, there are numerous regattas and races dedicated to catamarans . It’s a thrilling experience to watch these agile vessels zip through the water with incredible speed.

In conclusion, 2 person catamaran sailboats offer an exciting and versatile sailing experience for beginners and seasoned sailors alike. With their stability, speed capabilities, ample living space, and ease of handling, it’s no wonder they’re gaining popularity among those looking to elevate their sailing adventures . Whether you want to embark on solo journeys or enjoy memorable moments with your partner or friend at sea, a 2 person catamaran sailboat may be just the vessel you need!

Mastering the Art of Maneuvering a 2 Person Catamaran Sailboat

Are you ready to embark on a thrilling adventure and learn the ins and outs of maneuvering a 2-person catamaran sailboat? Look no further because we are here to guide you through mastering this exhilarating water sport. Buckle up as we dive into the art of catamaran sailing !

Catamarans have gained immense popularity among sailing enthusiasts due to their exceptional speed and stability. These multi-hulled vessels offer an adrenaline-pumping experience that combines skill, precision, and a splash of adrenaline. So, let’s break down the essentials of mastering the art of maneuvering this magnificent watercraft.

First and foremost, understanding the basic anatomy of a catamaran is essential . Unlike traditional monohull boats, catamarans consist of two separate hulls connected by a deck platform. This unique design grants them superior stability and increased speed potential. Additionally, they usually possess large sails that harness the power of wind in order to propel forward.

To start your journey towards becoming a master catamaran sailor, it’s crucial to grasp the concept of wind direction and its influence on your boat ‘s movement. Just like any sailboat, catamarans rely entirely on wind power for propulsion. Therefore, knowing how to identify wind direction will enable you to make well-informed decisions while maneuvering.

Next comes tacking and jibing – two fundamental techniques that will elevate your catamaran sailing prowess! Tacking refers to changing the direction of your boat against or into the wind whereas jibing involves turning downwind with consistent speed maintained throughout the process.

As you practice both techniques tirelessly, don’t forget about positioning your crew weight correctly. On a catamaran sailboat , keeping balance is paramount for optimal performance. Maintaining equilibrium requires transferring body weight between hulls when tacking or jibing – shifting weight towards leeward (the side opposite from where the wind blows) helps keep your vessel stable and prevents capsizing.

Now, let’s navigate the realm of catamaran racing tactics! When participating in competitive sailing events, strategic maneuvering plays a crucial role in securing victory. Mastering efficiency techniques such as sail trim , apparent wind awareness, and efficient course planning will give you a competitive edge against other skilled sailors.

Sail trim refers to adjusting the sail position according to wind strength and direction to maximize your vessel’s performance. Utilizing cunningly fine-tuned adjustments will enable you to harness the full power of the wind efficiently. Additionally, learning how to interpret apparent wind – the combination of true wind and boat speed – is vital for understanding optimal sail angles throughout your race.

Lastly, efficient course planning requires assessing different factors like current, tide, and other environmental elements. Mapping out your route accurately while considering all these variables ensures that you make informed decisions that save time and increase overall speed.

As with any sport or skill worth mastering, practice makes perfect when it comes to catamaran sailing . Start by honing your basic skills before progressing towards more advanced techniques. Pairing theoretical knowledge with practical experience will undoubtedly steer you towards becoming an accomplished catamaran sailor !

So there you have it – a comprehensive guide on mastering the art of maneuvering a 2-person catamaran sailboat. With essential understanding of wind direction, tacking and jibing techniques, strategic racing tactics, crew weight management, and continual practice – soon enough you’ll be gracefully gliding atop waves like a true sailing maestro. Get ready for an unforgettable adventure on the high seas!

The feeling of gliding through the water, with only the wind as your guide, is nothing short of exhilarating. However, it is important to prioritize safety during this kind of adventure to ensure that you can truly enjoy your time on the water. In this article, we will discuss some essential safety measures and tips to make your 2 person catamaran sailboat adventure safe and enjoyable.

1. Prepare Yourself: Before setting sail, it is crucial to be well-prepared and have a clear understanding of basic sailing techniques. Take the time to attend a sailing course or gain guidance from an experienced sailor . Understanding how to handle the boat properly in different conditions will significantly enhance your safety during this adventure.

2. Check Weather Conditions: Always check weather reports before heading out onto the water. While strong winds may be perfect for an adrenaline-filled ride, extreme weather conditions can pose significant risks for inexperienced sailors. It is better to reschedule your trip than risking being caught in rough waters or storms.

3. Wear Appropriate Safety Gear: When venturing out on a catamaran sailboat , wearing suitable safety gear should be non-negotiable. Life vests are essential for everyone onboard, regardless of their swimming abilities or experience levels. Additionally, consider investing in helmets and harnesses if you plan on engaging in more advanced sailing maneuvers.

4. Buddy System: Ensure that you always have someone accompanying you when embarking on a 2 person catamaran sailboat adventure – after all, it’s called two-person catamaran for a reason! Having another person onboard not only enhances the fun but also provides an extra set of eyes and hands if anything goes wrong or if someone experiences seasickness or health issues.

5. Communication and Coordination: Establish clear communication signals and hand gestures with your sailing partner before setting off. This enables effective coordination while on the water, which is vital for maneuvering the boat smoothly and maintaining better control in windy conditions. Regularly communicate about potential hazards or changes in the weather to stay safe throughout your journey.

6. Practice Capsizing and Recovery: Capsize drills may not feel like the most enjoyable part of preparing for your sailboat adventure, but they are crucial for safety. Understanding how to recover from a capsize will give you confidence and knowledge if such an event occurs unexpectedly during your trip.

7. Keep Emergency Equipment Onboard: Always have essential emergency equipment onboard, such as a first aid kit, flares, whistle, flashlight, and a VHF radio. These items become invaluable resources in case of accidents or emergencies when help may not be readily available.

8. Stay Hydrated and Protect Yourself from the Sun: Remaining hydrated is crucial for staying alert and focused during your adventure on the water . Always carry plenty of drinking water with you to prevent dehydration while sailing under the blazing sun. Apply sunscreen generously to protect yourself from harmful UV rays, even if it seems cloudy outside.

9. Respect Nature and Local Regulations: While enjoying your catamaran sailboat adventure, make sure to respect marine life and follow local regulations strictly. Avoid disturbing natural habitats or throwing any trash into the water – let’s keep our oceans beautiful ! Familiarize yourself with any specific rules or legal requirements set by governing bodies or port authorities in the area where you plan to sail .

10. Have Fun Responsibly: Lastly, have fun but do so responsibly! Adhering to safety measures does not mean squashing all excitement; it simply ensures that you can enjoy your adventure without unnecessary risks. Strike a balance between enjoying adrenaline-inducing moments on the water while also prioritizing everyone’s well-being.

In summary, a 2 person catamaran sailboat adventure can be an incredible experience. By following these safety measures and tips, you can ensure that your journey is not only filled with thrilling moments but also with memories of a safe and enjoyable adventure on the open seas . Saare Yachts Logo

↓  New video about Saare 41.2 here at the bottom of the page ↓

2 person yacht

After the great success of the Saare 38.2, which was presented as a special 2-person yacht at the Boot in Düsseldorf in 2019, the Saare 41.2 will follow in 2023.

The Saare 38.2 thrilled many sailors and customers, as well as the specialist audience and the press. The praise and comments were overwhelming and interest was high right from the start.

Never before have the demands of a two-person crew or a single-handed sailor been implemented so consistently and demandingly. The development of this concept was based on the observations of the Saare development team and took place in close consultation with the first clients.

Customer inquiries and our own considerations have led to the great Saare 41ac being further developed in this direction and rebuilt as the Saare 41.2.

By the way, Addition 2 does not apply as Version 2 or Mark 2 or something similar, as is often the case with other shipyards, but is a clear indication of the optimal crew size on board. As the Saare 41.2, probably the best cruising yacht for 2 people.

During an intensive test season with our Saare 41ac in the summer of 2022, some new developments were tried out in practice and optimized a bit. Now the Saare 41.2 is coming onto the market as, on the one hand, a very tried and tested yacht with first-class, safe and uncomplicated sailing and maneuvering properties and, on the other hand, as a further developed, extremely contemporary and innovative yacht.

Everything is available for a demanding 2-person crew. The owner’s cabin in the foredeck is very spacious, offers a huge bunk and lots of closet and storage space. The saloon is cozy and practical in port and at sea. The sofa berths can be used excellently as sea berths.

A classic card table is available and the large pantry leaves nothing to be desired. The wet room next to the companionway offers space for a toilet (installed lengthwise and can therefore also be used at sea), a large washbasin with a wall cupboard and a comfortable, separable shower area.

The Saare 41.2 is particularly impressive because of its many, very large and perfectly usable storage spaces. On deck there is a large sail storage space in the foredeck aft of the anchor locker. Closed with a waterproof hatch, you can store 3 to 4 sails, a dinghy or bicycles here. There is a special storage space on the transom for the liferaft (optional), as well as 2 stern lockers. There are 2 shallow lockers in the cockpit for the usual mooring line needs. The special highlight are the two large, walk-in storage spaces in the rear part of the yacht. The room on the starboard side is accessed through the shower. From here, many technical units, the electrical system, the autopilot drive, the on-board heater, charger and inverter, etc. are easily accessible.

Aft of the pantry, the second large storage space offers a shelf with storage boxes and plenty of space for other things such as an oilskin cupboard, a freezer box and other individual solutions.

2 person yacht

No two Saar yachts are the same. We offer many different options and variants. Our customers very often have very special wishes and ideas, which we then implement individually for them. The following photos also show the implementation of optional and very personal wishes and special equipment.

The high-quality construction, using exclusively vinyl ester resin for the hull and deck, the vacuum infusion process and the first-class wooden interior are well known. Only the best components from the respective world market leaders for the rig, fittings, engine and navigation electronics are used on the Saare yachts. The lead keel is a quality feature that is rarely seen anymore and the extremely solid floor assembly, which extends into the deep bilge, is something unique in this form.

On deck, the new Saare 41.2 has some special features that make life on board much easier, even for single-handed sailors or older crews. A central halyard winch is electrified as standard and also helps with setting and reefing the mainsail.

2 person yacht

The new Saare 41.2 offers a very comfortable owner’s cabin in the foredeck. The very large double berth (length 2.10 m, 2.25 m wide aft and 1.20 m wide at the bow) is equipped with a particularly good Flexima Nautic mattress (18 cm thick). There is plenty of cupboards and storage space, as well as storage space under the bunk.

2 deck hatches and 2 windows in the superstructure as well as 2 hull windows allow light and air into the interior.

The side paneling can be covered with vinyl-covered, white surfaces or made with solid wooden strips as a path. In both cases, the cladding insulates and is ventilated.

The interior is usually made of fine Khaya mahogany or light European oak (grained horizontally or vertically).

2 person yacht

The new Saare 41.2 also offers a real card table. The sofa berths can also be used as real sea berths. There are water and diesel tanks under the sofas. Amidships, deep down, is the best place for the tanks.

The table is available in different versions, with two folding side wings or as a modern folding table with or without an additional cool box.

If desired, a retractable television can be installed behind the backrest on the starboard side.

2 person yacht

The already excellent wet room with a large, separable shower area has been revised and now offers even more comfort.

2 person yacht

On the port side you can access the large storage space through a door next to the galley. There are various expansion options with storage boxes, a heated oilskin cabinet or large storage cupboards. Optionally, a guest cabin with a double berth can also be installed in this area.

The new floor covering in the cabins is visually beautiful and, above all, very practical. The design floor is non-slip, scratch-resistant, hard-wearing and long-lasting. It is harmless to the environment and health and is also suitable for humid environments.

We offer different decors to match the types of wood and upholstery used.

If you do not one bed, the container sofa is designed to allow two people to sleep separately as well. It’s a comfortable sleeping area with two separate beds. Just what you need.

This vessel also offers two drawer refrigerators, a concealed sink, a concealed stove, a dinette that can extend into a sunbathing area, and an enclosed toilet.

The cabin has a lot of natural light thanks to two long windows on the sides of the boat as well as double sliding glass doors to allow easy access into the cabin.

2 Boats That Can Sleep Two:

If you do not need two separate beds but are instead looking for comfortable accommodations for two people that might include a couple, you will have some additional options.

Most boats that feature a cuddy cabin have enough space to sleep, two people.

This is a comfortable way to stay overnight on your vessel that might be smaller or more inexpensive.

Oftentimes you can change the cuddy cabins with the rearranging of cushions to create bench seating or other options.

The drawback to a cuddy cabin vessel is that you do not get the same amenities that the previous vessels offered.

This includes things such as a kitchen or shower.

You can still have a bathroom in a cuddy, but it will likely be portable and stow under your cuddy cushions.

7. Stingray 225 CR Cuddy Cabin:

2 person yacht

The Stingray 225 CR Cuddy Cabin is great for both safety and performance. This boat features a z-plane hull that allows it to raise and plane quicker than other hull designs.

This boat is small and is just about 23 feet long. This boat offers a spacious cockpit and cabin for such a small sporting boat.

Maximum passengers for this boat is 10 people and there is sleeping space available for 2 to 3.

The cabin featured on the boat has a v-berth as well as amenities. This cabin also is able to be locked to provide the necessary privacy.

This boat offers plenty of storage as well as amenities including a freshwater sink, stowaway portable head with level indicator, and an automatic fire extinguishing system.

Safety and comfort are the main priority in this small boat that is perfect for overnight boating.

8. Bayliner 742 Cuddy:

2 person yacht

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Bayliner boats are sleek and high performing boats that really focus on the small details.

Comfortable seating including a folding sun lounge is sure to please any passenger aboard. This vessel also features a co-pilot seat that can extend to form a chaise lounge.

This boat places a high focus on entertaining and includes features such as a cockpit entertainment center with built-in sink. There is also an optional cockpit table.

The cabin features sleeping space for two people with plenty of natural light from the skylights and ventilated portlights.

The deck features plenty of storage, even an in-floor locker for water sports equipment like skis and wakeboards.

You can also swim off the swim platform with telescoping ladder.

Necessary Equipment For Sleeping On The Boat

Simply having a boat that offers sleeping space is not enough. You will also want to make sure that your sleeping areas are comfortable.

This may seem self-explanatory, but you will want to make sure your berths feature clean sheets, warm blankets, and pillows.

Keeping linens and blankets on a boat is different than in a house.

A boat can be compared to a damp basement. When you have blankets in a wet and humid basement, you can get damp blankets that can even become moldy over time.

To combat this, there are a few options you can utilize.

One way to combat damp and musty blankets and linens are to make sure that you do not store them in the boat when you are not using it. Keeping them in a dry house is a great way to prevent this problem entirely.

This is not very effective if you plan a multiple-day trip and your boat accumulates a lot of moisture.

Making sure that you properly insulate your boat, or even investing in a dehumidifier can do wonders to combat damp and musty conditions.

Another good tip is to dry your blankets and other cushions out if they are wet or damp. You can do this by hanging them up inside the cabin, but is even more effective out in the sun.

You also want to make sure that your mattress itself doesn’t get damp. This can make sleep very uncomfortable.

Keeping your bedding dry at all times is key to having a clean and comfortable bed to fall into at night.

Make Sure To Be Prepared:

In addition to having the proper sleeping equipment, if you plan to spend longer than a few hours on your vessel you will want to make sure you are prepared in other ways as well.

If your boat doesn’t offer private cabins or other private areas, you can purchase a private changing room. These can be as simple as a pop-up changing area. This can be ideal for changing out of a wet swimsuit and into what you plan to sleep in.

You will also need other more practical things. Most of these options came with their own head, but if they didn’t, you will want to invest in one. This can be a simple portable option but will still be easier than possibly having to go to land every time nature calls.

It is also important that you have enough food and water. Water is very important to prevent dehydration while out in the sun. You will want to make sure that you pack enough water for everyone. If there is one thing that should be “over-packed” it should be water.

This is important for your health as well as your thirst.

You will also need food if you plan on traveling to a place where stopping somewhere for food is not a feasible option.

You also want to be prepared for the weather. Make sure you have the proper clothing for any weather occasion. Even on a warm summer day, nights can get cold out on the water. Make sure you have the proper long clothes and blankets.

Things like sunscreen and bug spray can also be life-saving while out on the water all day and night.

You will also want a flashlight for when it gets dark out. This will not only prevent you from waking the other passengers up but can help you save your boat battery from potential overuse.

Finally, emergency equipment should always be featured on your vessel. This includes a fire extinguisher, life jackets for every passenger, flares, and emergency contact channels including phones and radios.

If you are properly prepared, you can have a fun and stress-free experience while out on the water.

Final Thoughts:

Whether you are looking for a vessel that sleeps two people, a vessel that comes with two separate beds, or even a boat that can sleep more than two people, you will have plenty of options.

With innovative designs, smaller boats are able to offer more luxuries in their cabins than they were previously. This is because they use space more creatively and efficiently.

This wider variety of options means that there is a boat for every budget that will match your needs. Even if those needs are the ability to stay on your boat comfortably overnight.

Buying a used boat can be a great way to save money if you are looking for a vessel that is a little bigger or more equipped than a small cuddy cabin.

Make sure that you are properly equipped when you go out on your boat, especially for overnight stays.

The main thing to remember is to make sure both you and your passengers are comfortable. If you are not comfortable, your experience will likely be less enjoyable.

Overnight boating, or even camping on your vessel can be a great way to have fun with your loved ones and make some memories.

20 Best Small Sailboats for the Weekender

  • By Mark Pillsbury
  • Updated: May 24, 2024

In order to go cruising, most of us require a sailboat with a head, a galley, and bunks. The boat, likely a 30-footer and more often a 40-footer, will have electronics for navigation and entertainment, refrigeration if the trip is longer than a coastal hop, an engine for light wind, and, depending on our appetites for food and fun, perhaps a genset to power our toys and appliances.

To go sailing , however, all we really need is a hull, mast, rudder, and sail. To experience the pure joy of sheeting in and scooting off across a lake, bay, or even the open ocean, there’s nothing better than a small sailboat – we’re talking sailboats under 25 feet. You can literally reach out and touch the water as it flows past. You instantly feel every puff of breeze and sense every change in trim.

Some of the boats in this list are new designs, others are time-tested models from small sailboat manufacturers, but every one is easy to rig, simple to sail, and looks like a whole lot of fun either for a solo outing on a breezy afternoon or to keep family and friends entertained throughout your entire sailing season. This list is made up of all types of sailboats , and if you’re looking for a list of some of the best small sailboats for beginners, you’ll find exactly that here.

Any one of these popular boats could be labeled as a trailerable sailboat, daysailer, or even a weekender sailboat. And while most would be labeled as a one or two person sailboat, some could comfortably fit three or even four people.

Marblehead 22 Daysailer

Marblehead 22 Daysailer

If you have an eye for elegant lines and your heart goes pitter-patter over just the right amount of overhang beneath a counter transom, the Marblehead 22 daysailer, designed by Doug Zurn and built by Samoset Boatworks in Boothbay, Maine, will definitely raise your pulse. Traditional-looking above the waterline and modern beneath, the cold-molded hull sports a deep bulb keel and a Hall Spars carbon-fiber mast with a wishbone rig and square-top main. The 11-foot-9-inch cockpit can seat a crowd, and a small cuddy forward will let you stow your friends’ gear for the day. samosetboatworks.com

Catalina 22 Sport

Catalina 22 Sport

Many a harbor plays host to an active fleet of Catalina 22s, one of the most popular small sailboats over the years, given its basic amenities and retractable keel, which allows it to be easily trailered. Recently, the company introduced the Catalina 22 Sport, an updated design that can compete with the older 22s. The boat features a retractable lead keel; a cabin that can sleep four, with a forward hatch for ventilation; and a fractional rig with a mainsail and a roller-furling jib. Lifelines, a swim ladder, and an engine are options, as are cloth cushions; vinyl cushions are standard. The large cockpit will seat a crowd or let a mom-and-pop crew stretch out and enjoy their sail. It’s clear why the Catalina 22 is one of the best sailboats under 25 feet. catalinayachts.com

Hunter 22

With its large, open-transom cockpit and sloop rig, the Hunter 22 makes a comfortable daysailer for family and friends. But with its cuddy cabin, twin bunks, optional electrical system, opening screened ports, and portable toilet, a parent and child or a couple could comfortably slip away for an overnight or weekend. Add in the optional performance package, which includes an asymmetric spinnaker, a pole, and a mainsheet traveler, and you could be off to the races. The boat features a laminated fiberglass hull and deck, molded-in nonskid, and a hydraulic lifting centerboard. Mount a small outboard on the stern bracket, and you’re set to go. marlow-hunter.com

the Daysailer

Not sure whether you want to race, cruise or just go out for an afternoon sail? Since 1958, sailors have been having a ball aboard the Uffa Fox/George O’Day-designed Daysailer. Fox, who in the 1950s was on the cutting edge of planning-dinghy design, collaborated with Fall River, Massachusetts boatbuilder O’Day Corp. to build the 16-foot Daysailer, a boat that features a slippery hull and a small cuddy cabin that covers the boat roughly from the mast forward. Thousands of Daysailers were built by various builders, and they can be found used for quite affordable prices. There are active racing fleets around the US, and new Daysailers are still in production today, built by Cape Cod Ship Building. capecodshipbuilding.com

BayRaider from Swallow Boats

BayRaider from Swallow Boats

Easy to rig and trailer, the BayRaider from England’s Swallow Yachts is a relative newcomer to the small-boat market in the United States. Nearly all of its 19 feet 9 inches is open cockpit, though a spray hood can be added to keep the forward sections dry. The BayRaider is ketch-rigged with a gunter-style mainmast. The topmast and mizzen are both carbon-fiber, which is an option for the mainmast as well. The BayRaider can be sailed with a dry hull in lighter conditions or with 300 pounds of water ballast to increase its stability. With the centerboard and hinged rudder raised, the boat can maneuver in even the thinnest water.

12 1/2 foot Beetle Cat

Big fun can come in small packages, especially if your vessel of choice happens to be the 12 ½-foot Beetle Cat. Designed by John Beetle and first built in 1921, the wooden shallow draft sailboat is still in production today in Wareham, Massachusetts at the Beetle Boat Shop. With a draft of just 2 feet, the boat is well-suited for shallow bays, but equally at home in open coastal waters. The single gaff-rigged sail provides plenty of power in light air and can be quickly reefed down to handle a blow. In a word, sailing a Beetle Cat is fun. beetlecat.com

West Wight Potter P 19

West Wight Potter P 19

With berths for four and a workable galley featuring a cooler, a sink, and a stove, West Wight Potter has packed a lot into its 19-foot-long P 19. First launched in 1971, this is a line of boats that’s attracted a true following among trailer-sailors. The P 19′s fully retractable keel means that you can pull up just about anywhere and go exploring. Closed-cell foam fore and aft makes the boat unsinkable, and thanks to its hard chine, the boat is reportedly quite stable under way. westwightpotter.com

NorseBoat 17.5

NorseBoat 17.5

Designed for rowing and sailing (a motor mount is optional), the Canadian-built NorseBoat 17.5—one of which was spotted by a CW editor making its way through the Northwest Passage with a two-man crew—features an open cockpit, a carbon-fiber mast, and a curved-gaff rig, with an optional furling headsail set on a sprit. The lapstrake hull is fiberglass; the interior is ply and epoxy. The boat comes standard with two rowing stations and one set of 9-foot oars. The boat is designed with positive flotation and offers good load-carrying capacity, which you could put to use if you added the available canvas work and camping tent. NorseBoats offers a smaller sibling, the 12.5, as well; both are available in kit form.

Montgomery 17

Montgomery 17

Billed as a trailerable pocket cruiser, the Montgomery 17 is a stout-looking sloop designed by Lyle Hess and built out of fiberglass in Ontario, California, by Montgomery Boats. With a keel and centerboard, the boat draws just under 2 feet with the board up and can be easily beached when you’re gunkholing. In the cuddy cabin you’ll find sitting headroom, a pair of bunks, a portable toilet, optional shore and DC power, and an impressive amount of storage space. The deck-stepped mast can be easily raised using a four-part tackle. The builder reports taking his own boat on trips across the Golfo de California and on visits to California’s coastal islands. Montgomery makes 15-foot and 23-foot models, as well. If you’re in search of a small sailboat with a cabin, the Montgomery 17 has to be on your wish list.

CW Hood 32 Daysailer small sailboat

With long overhangs and shiny brightwork, the CW Hood 32 is on the larger end of the daysailer spectrum. Designers Chris Hood and Ben Stoddard made a conscious decision to forego a cabin and head in favor of an open cockpit big enough to bring 4 or 5 friends or family out for an afternoon on the water. The CW Hood 32 is sleek and graceful through the water and quick enough to do some racing, but keeps things simple with a self-tacking jib and controls that can be lead back to a single-handed skipper. A top-furling asymmetrical, electric sail drive and Torqeedo outboard are all optional. The CW Hood 32 makes for a great small family sailboat.  cwhoodyachts.com

Sun Cat from Com-Pac

Sun Cat from Com-Pac

Shallow U.S. East Coast bays and rock-strewn coasts have long been graced by cat boats, whose large, gaff-rigged mainsails proved simple and powerful both on the wind and, better yet, when reaching and running. The 17-foot-4-inch Sun Cat, built by Com-Pac Yachts, updates the classic wooden cat with its fiberglass hull and deck and the easy-to-step Mastender Rigging System, which incorporates a hinged tabernacle to make stepping the mast a one-person job. If you want a personal sailboat ideal for solo sailing, the Sun Can is a great choice. Belowdecks, the twin 6-foot-5-inch berths and many other features and amenities make this cat a willing weekender.

$19,800, (727) 443-4408, com-pacyachts.com

Catalina 16.5

Catalina 16.5

The Catalina 16.5 sits right in the middle of Catalina Yachts’ line of small sailboats, which range from the 12.5 to the 22 Capri and Sport, and it comes in both an easy-to-trailer centerboard model and a shoal-draft fixed-keel configuration. With the fiberglass board up, the 17-foot-2-inch boat draws just 5 inches of water; with the board down, the 4-foot-5-inch draft suggests good windward performance. Hull and deck are hand-laminated fiberglass. The roomy cockpit is self-bailing, and the bow harbors a good-sized storage area with a waterproof hatch. catalinayachts.com

Hobie 16

No roundup of best small sailboats (trailerable and fun too) would be complete without a mention of the venerable Hobie 16, which made its debut in Southern California way back in 1969. The company has introduced many other multihulls since, but more than 100,000 of the 16s have been launched, a remarkable figure. The Hobie’s asymmetric fiberglass-and-foam hulls eliminate the need for daggerboards, and with its kick-up rudders, the 16 can be sailed right up to the beach. Its large trampoline offers lots of space to move about or a good place to plant one’s feet when hanging off the double trapezes with a hull flying. The boat comes with a main and a jib; a spinnaker, douse kit, trailer, and beach dolly are optional features. hobiecat.com

Hunter 15

Novice sailors or old salts looking for simplicity could both enjoy sailing the Hunter 15. With a fiberglass hull and deck and foam flotation, the boat is sturdily built. The ample freeboard and wide beam provide stability under way, and the heavy-duty rubrail and kick-up rudder mean that you won’t have to worry when the dock looms or the going grows shallow. Both the 15 and its slightly larger 18-foot sibling come standard with roller-furling jibs.

$6,900/$9,500 (boat-show prices for the 15 and 18 includes trailers), (386) 462-3077, marlow-hunter.com

Super Snark

Super Snark

Under various owners, the Snark brand of sailboats, now built by Meyers Boat Co., has been around since the early 1970s. The Super Snark, at 11 feet, is a simple, easily car-topped daysailer that’s fit out with a lateen rig and sail. Billed as unsinkable, the five boats in the company’s line are built with E.P.S. foam, with the external hull and deck vacuum-formed to the core using an A.B.S. polymer. The Super Snark weighs in at 50 pounds, and with a payload capacity of 310 pounds, the boat can carry two.

Norseboat 21.5

Norseboat 21.5

Built in Canada, the NorseBoat 21.5 is a rugged looking craft that comes in a couple of configurations: one with an open cockpit and small doghouse, and another with a smaller cockpit and cabin that houses a double berth for two adults and optional quarter berths for the kids. Both carry NorseBoat’s distinctive looking carbon fiber gaff-rigged mast with main and jib (a sprit-set drifter is optional), and come with a ballasted stub keel and centerboard. Because of its lightweight design, the boat can be rowed and is easily trailered.

Flying Scot

Flying Scot

Talk about time-tested, the 19-foot Flying Scot has been in production since 1957 and remains a popular design today. Sloop rigged, with a conventional spinnaker for downwind work, the boat is an easily sailed family boat as well as a competitive racer, with over 130 racing fleets across the U.S. Its roomy cockpit can seat six to eight, though the boat is often sailed by a pair or solo. Hull and deck are a fiberglass and balsa core sandwich. With the centerboard up, the boat draws only eight inches. Though intended to be a daysailer, owners have rigged boom tents and berths for overnight trips, and one adventurous Scot sailor cruised his along inland waterways from Philadelphia to New Orleans.

RS Venture

Known primarily for its line of racing dinghys, RS Sailing also builds the 16-foot, 4-inch Venture, which it describes as a cruising and training dinghy. The Venture features a large, self-draining cockpit that will accommodate a family or pack of kids. A furling jib and mainsail with slab reefing come standard with the boat; a gennaker and trapeze kit are options, as is an outboard motor mount and transom swim ladder. The deck and hull are laid up in a fiberglass and Coremat sandwich. The Venture’s designed to be both a good performer under sail, but also stable, making it a good boat for those learning the sport.

Topaz Taz

Topper makes a range of mono- and multihull rotomolded boats, but the model that caught one editor’s eye at Strictly Sail Chicago was the Topaz Taz. At 9 feet, 8 inches LOA and weighing in at 88 pounds, the Taz is not going to take the whole crowd out for the day. But, with the optional mainsail and jib package (main alone is for a single child), the Taz can carry two or three kids or an adult and one child, and would make a fun escape pod when tied behind the big boat and towed to some scenic harbor. The hull features Topper’s Trilam construction, a plastic and foam sandwich that creates a boat that’s stiff, light, and durable, and shouldn’t mind being dragged up on the beach when it’s time for a break.

$2,900 (includes main and jib), 410-286-1960, topazsailboats.com

WindRider WRTango

WindRider WRTango

WRTango, a fast, sturdy, 10-foot trimaran that’s easy to sail, is the newest portable craft from WindRider International. It joins a line that includes the WR16 and WR17 trimarans. The Tango features forward-facing seating, foot-pedal steering, and a low center of gravity that mimics the sensation of sitting in a kayak. It weighs 125 pounds (including the outriggers and carbon-fiber mast), is extremely stable, and has single-sheet sail control. The six-inch draft and kick-up rudder make it great for beaching, while the hull and outriggers are made of rotomolded polyethylene, so it can withstand running into docks and being dragged over rocks.

Superyachts by their very definition are mammoth, so why then can charter vessels often only accommodate comparatively few? The answer largely lies in PYC regulations which limits their capacity, as adhering to them can mean extensive costs, testing, and possible refits. Consequently, many owners refrain from going above the legal limit of 12 passengers plus crew. So whilst an 80m yacht with 10 staterooms might be able to sleep 20 guests, for charter it can often only offer the same as a 50m yacht with 6 staterooms for up to 12 guests. But what do you do if you want to charter a yacht for a party of 12 or more?

Larger charter vessels that meet PYC rules do exist. But make no mistake that adhering to PYC directives is a delicate tiptoe between style and substance. The charter superyachts featured below make this appear effortless: artfully crafting formidable spaces for large parties whilst still retaining the paradisiacal ambiance and character that such vessels are cherished for.

Here's our round-up of the best charter yachts available for 12 guests or more.

Charter yacht Legend

A former Soviet icebreaker, the 77m (253ft) motor yacht LEGEND metamorphosed into a powerful, rock-like explorer vessel in 2016, when she was refitted with chartering in mind. Up to 22 people can quench their thirst for epic odysseys on this ship (with capacity for 28 crew and 10 additional staff) across 13 lavishly appointed suites, each representing a sultry, sartorially different universe. While no two rooms are the same, all are linked by their sizzling drama: think intricately carved wood scenes on the ceiling and humbug striped seating that merges into a pool of monochromatic marble below, and all contained by rich mahogany paneling. Her eye-poppingly ornate interiors are paired with elaborate features, including a whisky bar, cigar room, 14-seat cinema and a complete Balinese spa offering almost every wellness aspect you could think of.

No two rooms are the same, with each representing a sultry, sartorially different universe

Outdoor jacuzzi onboard superyacht Legend

From the last great ivory wilderness of Antarctica to Northern Europe 's chiseled fjords painted in big, bold brushstrokes of green, all can be experienced in the bubbling warmth of a 16-person, waterfall-fed, outdoor jacuzzi on the main deck. Combined with her bonanza of tenders and water toys (no less than two helicopters, 4 jet skis, one submarine, two wakeboards, two paddleboards plus snowmobiles) she's primed for practically every adventure imaginable.

Legend Yacht

Built to enthrall, the echoes of her former life as a 100-passenger cruise vessel are seen in truly exceptional entertainment zones spanning four decks. Sleeping 36 guests across 20 cabins (with room for up to 40 crew) and with a sprawling guest area of 1,800 sq meters, 90m (296ft) superyacht LAUREN L is for those seeking to dazzle their parties with every possible whim catered to.

Her highlights include a staggeringly comprehensive health and beauty center in its own right, featuring a beauty and hair salon, massage room, and an aromatherapy treatment room. But her crowning jewel is undoubtedly the spa, where one can leisurely soak admiring the ever-changing vistas from floor-length windows in a lavender mist, before gazing at their miniature onboard ocean in the aquarium located in the relaxation room.

Opulent living is undoubtedly 80m (263ft)  motor yacht ELEMENTS  modus operandi , masterfully evoked through designer Cristiano Gatto's Islamic and Ottoman architectural flourishes in a muted palette of arctic silvers and icy blues. Eyes trace from floor to ceiling a spectacular multitude of materials across four voluminous decks: where mother-of-pearl inlays are jointly presented alongside intricate mosaics, hand-tufted carpets and backlit onyx. This intensity is magnified in the sunlight-drenched main saloon, which is designed to be the epicenter of activity on this yacht. Pillars are draped in Italian marble giving structure to the undulating layout of the room, replete with as many intimate corners as it has wide, welcoming spaces.

Superyacht Elements cruising the water

Built in 2018, she sleeps up to 24 guests across 12 staterooms. The grand owner's suite located forward is the focal point on this vessel, with the option of converting the VIP cabins on the same deck into a huge, all-encompassing family apartment featuring an office, cinema, private Jacuzzi and bar all cradled by wraparound windows.

Elsewhere, her beach club is clad with a hammam and massage room to pamper guests whenever their heart desires, and on the foredeck, a throng of sunloungers cover the helipad when not in use. Plus, she has an entire armada of water toys to choose from when the open water beckons.

The silhouettes of the world's most glittering icons are forever etched into its glamorous soul

The silhouettes of the world's most glittering icons are forever etched into its glamorous soul. Purchased in 1954, Christina O's former owner (Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis) transformed her from a Canadian anti-submarine frigate into a golden pleasure palace, single-handedly crafting the superyacht playbook for living la dolce vita. Decades on, she still embodies the tycoon's vivacious spirit, tempered by the timeless grace of his wife, Jackie Kennedy.

Decorated in a distinct English country manor style, the 99m (325ft) motor yacht Christina O is capable of carrying up to 34 guests across 17 cabins, and a whopping 38 crew can attend to every need. Last refitted in 2018, her original, undeniably indulgent finishes — such as the orca teeth carved into the walls and the whale skin stools in Ari's bar —  still remain intact. Her much-loved minotaur mosaic swimming pool cum dance floor, the Onassis Suite, and concert room have also been carefully restored.

The 5 Best Sailboats For Beginners

5-best-sailboats-for-beginners

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

December 27, 2023

Sailing is a fun activity for people of all experience levels. In fact, learning to sail a basic boat is relatively easy—in the right environment, you can start cruising with minimal experience.

However, the idea of a beginner commanding a 55-foot ketch in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean is a bit ridiculous. Even though virtually everyone can sail, beginners should learn the basics in a controlled environment—and on the correct boat.

Boat size doesn’t necessarily affect its beginner-friendliness, because sailors need to take into account factors such as rig simplicity and handling characteristics.

Many beginners make the mistake of picking the wrong boat to begin with, which can lead to frustration and turn them off of sailing forever.

To mitigate these issues, this article will cover the best sailboats for beginners —so you can get on the water and start sailing safely and comfortably.

Table of contents

‍ Best Rigs for Beginners

There are many types of sailboat rigging , and some are more beginner-friendly than others. Unfortunately, some of the most aesthetically pleasing rigs are also the most complicated.

Eventually, sailors can acquire enough skill to master complex rigs, but it’s best to start simple.

Arguably, one of the simplest sailing rigs is the Lateen Rig. This rig consists of a mast, boom, and spar, along with a single halyard and mainsheet. With only two ropes in its simplest configuration, the Lateen Rig makes an excellent starter sailboat, and it will be featured on this list.

For larger boats, the Bermuda Sloop rig is an excellent choice. This rig is quite common and includes a jib for a larger sail plan.

For those who desire a slightly more robust (but single sail) layout, the gaff-rigged catboat is also an excellent choice. This versatile craft (and rig) has a large and relatively simple single sail, which is easier to handle than multiple sails.

Top Five Sailboats for Beginners

Now, we’ll go over the top five sailboats for beginners . These boats will descend in order from smallest to largest, but not by the level of experience needed.

Remember, just because you’re new to sailing doesn’t mean you have to settle for a boat that’s too small. Beginners can handle larger boats with some training, and some are easier to handle than their smaller counterparts.  ‍

The following boats were chosen because of their handling characteristics, low cost-of-ownership, and simplicity, as all of these factors are important for choosing the best beginner sailboat.

5) Sailing Dinghy

The sailing dinghy is the quintessential starter sailboat. These tiny, lightweight, popular, and highly affordable little craft is easy to operate and relatively difficult to capsize. The popular Optimist Sailing Dinghy, while designed for children up to the age of about 15, can be used (sometimes hilariously) by adults as well. An Optimist-style dingy is a great option for beginners over the age of 15, as boats of this style can be found in a variety of sizes. The sailing dinghy is a very popular youth racing sailboat, especially in the United States and the United Kingdom. While it’s not particularly fast, this little boat has wonderful handling characteristics and is relatively difficult to capsize. This open-cockpit boat uses a centerboard and detachable tiller and can be beached or carried atop a car without much hassle. The mast is removable, and all parts are easily stowed. Overall, the Optimist and its copycats are a remarkable little craft, equally useful as a tender for a larger boat or a standalone beginner sailboat.

Dinghy rigs vary between builders, but many use the simple Spirit Rig. The rig consists of a single sail and mainsheet, along with one mast, boom, and spar. The leech is stiffened by battens, and ties along the luff secure it all to the mast. Hoisting and securing the rig is easy, and lines are secured to the boat by a cleat. This simple rig has plenty of sail area for most places, and sailors can secure the mainsheet to a block or simply hold it in their hands.

The price of sailing dinghies can vary widely depending on multiple factors. Professionally-made sailing dinghies start around $3,500 new, and plywood kits are available for around $1,000 to $2,000. Used dinghies (including Optimist sailing dinghies) can be found on Craigslist for as low as a few hundred dollars.

{{boat-info="/boats/vanguard-sunfish"}}

The Sunfish is a brilliant little sailboat, and a very fast boat indeed. This little racing dinghy, while only 13 feet in length, can be an enormous amount of fun for beginners and experienced sailors alike. The best way to describe the handling of a Sunfish is, ‘tender,’ though it’s not difficult to master this little boat. For its size, the Sunfish has a relatively large sail area and a very shallow draft. This boat has a small cockpit and can be controlled easily by a single person. The large sail plan of the Lateen-Rigged Sunfish makes for excellent performance in light winds and amazing speed on windy days. The Sunfish is a lightweight fiberglass boat with a simple rig and is a great step-up from a sailing dinghy. It’s possible to learn how to sail on this boat, but every sailor who’s spent time on a Sunfish will probably recommend bringing a towel. The boat is relatively easy to capsize for beginners and it heels aggressively, but these characteristics can teach sailors some important lessons. The heeling characteristics of the Sunfish can help beginners get accustomed to the feeling and help them understand the limits of a sailboat and how to avoid capsizing.

The Sunfish features a Lateen Rig, which has some shared characteristics with the simple Spirit Rig. The Lateen Rig has a single spar, mast, and boom, and is easy to set up and dismantle. The mast is removable as well, making stowing and transportation relatively easy. The large sail plan of the Sunfish makes it ideal for lakes and other areas where the wind is sporadic or very low, and the boat can be safely handled in many conditions. The boat is great for racing and learning and is also available in a Bermuda rig. The Sunfish is recognizable by the distinctive fish logo in the top corner of the sail, and the classic rainbow sails striping.

The Sunfish is still commercially manufactured. You can purchase one new from the factory for around $5,000 today, and options are available to make the boat your own. While the boat is designed to be sailed by a single person, two adults can purchase this boat and use it together comfortably. Used Sunfish prices vary, but a fully-outfitted boat in good condition can cost upwards of $1,000. They hold their value well, and they’re a great choice for beginners.

{{boat-info="/boats/vanguard-laser"}}

The Laser is considered by many to be the Sunfish’s main competitor. The two boats are the same length (13 feet 9 inches) and share many of the same handling characteristics. However, the boats do have some notable differences. Many people consider the Laser to be a step-up from the Sunfish in difficulty, as the boat handles much more like a racer. The Laser has been used in the Olympics for racing. The laser is small and simple enough for beginners but requires skill to operate. Beginners can learn a lot from sailing a Laser and have an enormous amount of fun in the process. This fast little boat is simple and easy to set up but handles like a racecar.  If you’re a beginner on a laser, you’ll probably capsize at some point—which isn’t always a problem if you’re in a controlled environment, as the boat can be righted easily.

The laser is a Cat Rigged boat. This means it has only one mainsail and no headsails. The simple rig has a mast and a boom and is very easy to set up. The sail area of the laser is relatively large and designed for speed in high winds. The rig combined with the overall design of the sailboat makes it handle tenderly, which may be off-putting to some beginners. Regardless, it’s still a blast to sail for beginners with some experience.

New Laser sailboats start around $6,000 which is slightly more than the Sunfish. This simple centerboard cruiser is constructed as a race boat, which can explain some of the price increase. Used Laser sailboats are available on the market, though usually not as common as the Sunfish. Used Laser prices vary widely.

2) Gaff-Rigged Catboat

The gaff-rigged catboat isn’t a brand of boat—it’s a style of a sailboat that was once a popular workboat on the New England coast. This boat, which has only one mainsail and no headsails, is available in a wide range of designs. Catboats are famous for their handling and power and make a great sailboat for beginners. These vessels are available with centerboards, keels, cabins, and in open designs. Most catboats range from 15 to 19-feet long and can be built from wood or fiberglass. Catboats are easy to handle, and one who learns on a small catboat can easily transition to a larger one. Besides being one of the most easily recognizable sailboats, catboats are also some of the most versatile. A catboat can be just as suitable for lake cruising as it is for coastal waters.

The most common type of catboat rig is the Gaff Rig. This classic and robust rig is more complex than the simple Spirit and Lateen rig, but it’s more suitable for a ‘proper ship.’ The Gaff Rig can provide similar power as an equivalent Bermuda Rig, with much more elegance and a shorter mast. Many sailors prefer the classic Gaff Rig for its handling characteristics and durability.

It’s impossible to specify the price of catboats because they vary so much in design and size. New catboats (between 15 and 25-feet) can be purchased for less than $20,000, and used boats are numerous and varied. Cabin catboats tend to cost more, especially new—some run for more than $50,000 with a high level of amenities, including a head and galley. Numerous catboat plans are available online, and sailors report constructing them (usually of plywood) for just a few thousand dollars.

1) West Wight Potter 19

{{boat-info="/boats/west-wight-potter-19"}}

The West Wight Potter 19 is a fiberglass sailboat designed for safety, easy handling, and beginner-friendliness. This 19-foot trailer-sailor features a cabin with a vee-berth, a simple rig, and a retractable keel. The West Wight Potter 19 could potentially be the best cabin sailboat for beginners, and certainly one of the safest—the West Wight Potter 19, according to the manufacturer, is quite literally unsinkable. The hull is filled with buoyant materials, allowing the boat to be flooded and remain afloat. However, unsinkability isn’t the only characteristic of this boat that makes it ideal for beginners. The rig is simple and easy to set up, and the handling characteristics are excellent. The boat is not prone to aggressive heeling and handles confidently in a variety of conditions. While one generally wouldn’t consider it to be a blue-water cruiser, it’s still extremely capable—one sailor even sailed this vessel from California to Hawaii , which is over 2,000 nautical miles. The theoretical hull speed of this boat is around 5.4 knots, but it actually has a tendency to plane and achieve higher speeds. It’s a flat-bottomed cruiser, making it easy to beach and transport with its retractable keel and removable rudder. The West Wight Potter 19 is a great introduction to large sailboats and carries amenities normally reserved for boats at least 1/3 larger.

The West Wight Potter 19 is a Bermuda-Rigged sloop. The sail plan is sufficiently large to propel the boat in a variety of conditions, but not so large that it overpowers the boat. Sailors can single-hand the boat with ease, and set up and takedown are easy and require no special tools. The boat handles well in a variety of conditions and is well-known for its superior stability. The rig comes apart easily and can be stowed and trailered by one person.

The West Wight Potter 19 has been produced and sold commercially since the 1970s, and the used market has plenty of boats available, generally starting around $5,000. New West Wight Potter 19 sailboats are remarkably affordable compared to other boats with comparable characteristics. The West Wight Potter 19 is manufactured by International Marine in California. New sailboats start at just shy of $25,000. Owners can add an enormous range of extra features to their boats, including a hull-strengthening ‘blue water’ package, a stove, a head, electrical power, spare parts, and much more. The boats are highly customizable and can be outfitted for weekender sailing or long-term liveaboard cruising.

How to Pick a Sailboat

Picking a sailboat for beginners doesn’t have to be difficult.  Before deciding on a boat, consider your experience level and location.

If you only have access to rough ocean, it may not be the best idea to get an open dinghy.

If you live near a lake, a Sunfish could be a great way to start.

Also, consider your budget. If you’re looking for a $50 sailboat, you can probably find one, but it won’t be ideal.

If you have just a few thousand dollars to spend, you can set yourself up nicely with a little research .

Also, consider what you want to do with the sailboat. Recreation, fishing , cruising , and exploration are options, and require different kinds of boats.

Whichever you end up choosing, make sure you try it out and can sail it comfortably.

Swan Boat Club driver bound over for trial after having 0.18 blood alcohol result

2 person yacht

Monroe — A woman who drove her car into a boat club in April, killing two children and injuring 11 others, was bound over for trial Thursday after testimony in her preliminary exam showed she had a blood alcohol level that was twice the legal limit and had told police that she shouldn't be driving.

One of the spectators in the crowded courtroom yelled "yes" when 1st District Court Judge Michael Brown found that prosecutors had provided enough evidence to bind over all charges against Marshella Chidester, 66, of Newport.

Chidester is charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating under the influence of alcohol causing death and four counts of operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious injury. She faces up to life in prison if convicted.

The decision came Thursday afternoon after Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy Steven Schmidt testified earlier that Chidester had a blood alcohol level of 0.18. The legal limit in Michigan is 0.08, and the state super drunk definition is 0.17.

Ken Laurain, assistant prosecuting attorney for Monroe County, declined to discuss the judge's decision, while Chidester's attorney, Bill Colovos, said he looked forward to proving her innocence. He said during an earlier arraignment that Chidester drank a single glass of wine and her impairment was caused by seizures.

"When the medical records come out, you'll see about the seizures," Colovos told The Detroit News on Thursday.

After the crash at Swan Boat Club on April 20, Chidester smelled like alcohol and had trouble maintaining her balance, testified Sgt. Michael Bomia, who was the first deputy on the scene. In a field sobriety test, she recited the alphabet correctly but had trouble focusing on the deputy's finger and counting backward from 100, Bomia said.

Chidester, responding to questions from another deputy at the crash site, said she shouldn’t be driving and rated her drunkenness at 7 on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being highly drunk. She said she had been drinking wine 30 minutes before the crash and was on medication for seizures.

"I wouldn't want to drive," she told another deputy, Schmidt, after he asked whether she should be driving.

Chidester told Schmidt that she didn’t remember what happened, according to Thursday's testimony.

“I pulled into the parking lot,” she told Schmidt, according to a video played during the hearing. “I thought I was driving up to the boat club. Evidently, I was driving right into the building.”

“You don’t remember what happened?” Schmidt asked.

“You know what, I have these seizures,” she said.

The crash killed 8-year-old Alanah Phillips and her 4-year-old brother, Zayn Phillips. Their mother, Mariah Dodds, and another sibling were among the injured.

Defense lawyer challenges video

Chidester is a former commodore at the boat club, which is located off Swan Creek near Lake Erie. It’s a membership-based organization that hosts holiday parties and other events, and provides docking space for members who own boats, according to its website.

Colovos argued against showing the video of Chidester, saying prosecutors hadn't directly proved she had been read her Miranda rights. The prosecutor indicated the rights had been given, but Colovos said the prosecution needed to produce the officer who read Chidester her rights before the video of her interview could be introduced. The judge let the video be shown after he was assured the Miranda rights had been administered.

During the Thursday hearing, another video showed Chidester getting into her car moments before the crash. The video, taken from a camera across the street from her home, shows her walking unsteadily from her home to her car.

Chidester quickly backed out of her driveway into the road and, while driving backward, swerved onto the shoulder of the road, according to the video. The camera momentarily loses view of her and then showed her driving frontward in the opposite direction toward the boat club, which is 500 feet from her home.

A neighbor had told police earlier that someone had rammed his car, pushing it into a fence, in the moments before the boat club crash. The video showed the collision, and a deputy testified Thursday that Chidester's car was involved in two crashes, the club and the car.

Dead children's mom testifies

Among the injured people who testified during the hearing Thursday was Dodds, the mother of the two children who died.

Dodds and her children were at a party at the boat club for the 3-year-old child of Dodds' friend, according to a Detroit law firm representing Dodds' family in a lawsuit against Chidester and the tavern where she reportedly was before the crash.

She said the only thing she remembered about the crash were the voices of several relatives. The relatives, who weren’t the two children who died, sounded far away, she said.

Her last memory before the accident was a happy one, Dodds said. She walking back to the table where her children were sitting and eating.

“I was laughing,” Dodds said.

Her next memory was waking up in a hospital room, where she remained for four days, she testified. One of her three children who survived was also hospitalized, she said.

Two months after the wreck, her son still needs more rehabilitation before he regains the ability to walk, Dodds said.

Videos show people screaming

During the hearing at 1st District Court in Monroe, Chidester’s attorney objected to the showing of several of the videos, arguing they weren't relevant. He said he had provided the county prosecutor's office with medical records about her condition.

Other videos played during the hearing showed the aftermath of crash, with people screaming while others scooped up children and fled the scene.

One video from the boat club showed a car traveling at a high rate of speed through the club's parking lot and then veering into the building at around 3 p.m. on April 20.

Another video showed people trying to clear debris and get to people trapped by the car against a wall. A child could be seen being pulled from behind a counter near where the car crashed.

"It was a chaotic scene," Bomia said.

In another scene, people could be seen pulling a woman from the floor, bloodied by the crash.

In a body-worn camera from a Monroe County sheriff's deputy, Chidester is shown sitting in a chair as the deputy arrives at the chaotic scene. Chidester was taken outside to the police car, where she answered questions.

Colovos said earlier that Chidester had blacked out from a seizure behind the wheel and didn’t remember the crash or anything leading up to it.

More: Aunt of siblings killed at party: 'We were supposed to be planning a birthday ... not a funeral'

Chidester suffers from neuropathy and has epileptic-like seizures in her legs, Colovos said earlier. She was hospitalized last fall after being treated for epileptic-type seizures in her legs, he said.

Two Metro Detroit medical experts told The Detroit News in May that the medical condition attributed to the woman may affect one's ability to drive, but the condition is not known for causing a loss of consciousness.

More: Medical experts weigh in on conditions attributed to driver in Swan Boat Club crash

Prosecutors said during an arraignment in April that Chidester drunkenly crashed her SUV into a boat club that was hosting a child's birthday party. They said she has had substance abuse issues. But Colovos said Chidester had no traffic tickets or police record.
