Beneteau First 20

first 20 yacht

Just shy of 21 feet, the Beneteau First 20 is the smallest boat in this builder’s lineup. But don’t let the size fool you. The First series is the performance-sailing line from Beneteau USA , and like the First 20’s larger siblings, this boat is designed for a good turn of speed. And going with the theory that the easier a boat is to sail, the more likely you are to do so, things have been kept simple. As an updated version of the popular Beneteau First 211, the First 20 has dual rudders, an all-new backstay-less rig, and flies a large square-topped mainsail and 100-percent roller-furling headsail. This Finot-Conq design has higher freeboard than a pure sportboat, which will keep you drier, but still has a modern, sharp look. The First 20 comes standard with a fiberglass bowsprit for flying an asymmetric spinnaker.

beneteau first 20

I’ve always thought that when I’m done with big cruising boats, I’d love to have a simple trailer-sailer, and the First 20 (with a base price of $37,700) would fit that bill. The lifting keel and fold-down mast fit nicely on a trailer, and with a weight of less than 3,000 pounds, the First 20 can be towed by typical trucks and SUVs, opening up your cruising range to include any number of inland lakes and waterways. Try doing that with a full-size cruising boat.

The cabin is weekend-getaway ready with a double V-berth—it can be separated from the saloon with a privacy curtain—and two decent-sized quarter berths, a small sink, and a portable toilet.

Beneteau First 20

Beneteau First 20 is a 20 ′ 11 ″ / 6.4 m monohull sailboat designed by Jean Marie Finot (Groupe Finot) and built by Beneteau starting in 2011.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Beneteau First 20

Beneteau First 20

The First 20

With over 2300 boats sailing worldwide since the introduction of the First 210 and First 21.7s, the success story continues with the First 20 !

One heck of a number that has continuously evolved these last twenty years and more, with a touch of insolence that has kept it young.  The First 20 has become more aggressive and stylish. Her look is more modern and in her class she offers the best balance between safety, performance and habitability. This classic small boat enjoys playing in the big league in all weather.

The First 20 has a harmonious and high-performing Finot-Conq hull that proves a model of stability. Thanks to an unstayed mast she features a generous sail plan with a square-top mainsail, 2016 code zero and asymmetric spinnaker on option. Yachtsmen are keen on the twin rudder helm and the chain locker. To increase the  First Twenty 's speed and performance all the more, she has been equipped with a rigging that will perpetuate her appeal, with a square-top mainsail and genoa whose area is greater, and a self-supporting mast without a stay. Thanks to this new rigging, which frees the lower shrouds, access to the fore is no longer hindered, making circulation on deck much easier. This is particularly appreciable on a boat of this size.To adhere to the trend that favours asymmetric sails, the First Twenty standard is equipped with a polyester bow sprit. . A completely new interior with more living space, more stowage and light wood finishes… and a new deck layout, with even more comfortable coamings !

Increasingly habitable and comfortable, the interior has done away with bulkheads. By replacing the mast prop with a structure built into the deck, this coastal cruiser offers a feeling of interior space second to none. Inside she is bathed in light by the deck hatch, and generously spacious with four berths and many storage spaces. She suits a wide variety of programmes.

More than ever before, the smallest of the FIRST family is a big cruising yacht with plenty of style ! Fun and a high-performer, this 6.50 m cruiser embraces a racing yet reassuring style. This unanimously acclaimed sailing yacht is small in size but has terrific qualities and she is loved because she is affordable and very easy to use.

Description

Beneteau First 20 sailing can be a good choice for those looking for a boat for short coastal voyages with the family or in a small group. This boat is also perfectly execute the role of first boat. Despite its modest dimensions (length 6,4 m) First 20 has a set of characteristics inherent rather racing boat grotto with a rectangular top, two rudders and a hull that provides speed and good stability. Design Beneteau First 20 was done by Finot Conq & Associates. The portfolio is the last known boat that participated in the famous krugosvetka — Hugo Boss, Generali, as well as yachts of class Mini-Transat. Weighing in at 1.2 tonnes, this yacht is easy to be transported on a trailer, so the owner is not restricted in the choice of areas to travel. In addition, the presence of the trailer eliminates the need for a permanent place at the pier. The boat is equipped with a lifting centerboard, so to put it in the water is not difficult. However, as to travel on shallow waters, and to come as close to the shore — draught boats with raised centerboard is only 70 cm cabin can sleep up to 4 people. The bathroom is not provided, but there is a place for portable toilets. Rigging, except the mainsail and headsail to spin, includes Spinnaker and/or gennaker.

Design Review: Beneteau First 21.0

We recently came across this review of our learn-to-sail boat, the Beneteau First 21.0 .  It’s sometimes called the First 210.  Many Europeans call it the Baby Ben .

Beneteau First 21.0 sloop sailing fast upwind.

It’s the smallest sailboat made by the largest (and oldest) sailboat manufacturer in the world.  It’s two and a half editions, or generations, or models old depending on how one defines that.  Started with the First 21.0; became the First 20.  (Boat didn’t shrink.)  Then, Beneteau and ASA (American Sailing Association) teamed up to produce a slightly modified version – that’s the “half” to which I refer – called the ASA Trainer or First 22.  (Again, the boat didn’t grow.)  The chief difference on this one is that they made a smaller cabin and larger cockpit.

asa first 22 pair

But, all versions have these things in common:

  • Hull.  (Boat body)  The size and shape are the same.
  • Keel.  (The fin that stops the boat from going sideways and from flipping over.)
  • Rudders.  (Steering fins.)  Yes, plural.  There are two.
  • Rig.  The spars (poles that hold the sails up, out, etc), and basic sailplan, are the same except for the squared-off top of the mainsail on the newer boats.

Bob Perry, a highly esteemed naval architect and author, with a regular column on design in Sailing magazine, penned this article some time ago. Here are his words, and some pics we saw fit to slip in…

Perry on Design: the Beneteau First 21.0.

(Bob’s prose appears below in quotes.  Any editorial notes I couldn’t resist are indented in parentheses as I’ve done here.)

“Let’s go small and look at a trailerable boat. This one is from the board of Group Finot and built by Beneteau. It is a very different approach, abandoning tradition and going after speed and convenience with modern design features.

ben blueprint

“The benefit of this type of boat is the ability to move easily to exotic or semi-exotic locations for regattas. The 210 will make a great daysailer or a camp-style cruiser. While trailerable sailboats are seldom examples of refined design, the First 210 shows design innovation aimed at sparkling performance and eye appeal. This boat is also unsinkable.

ben trailer

“With an LOA of 21 feet, the First 210 shows a modern, round bilge hull form with a very broad transom to give it dinghylike proportions. Look carefully at the plan view, deck layout or interior. Note the location of maximum beam. In most modern designs the maximum beam is located at or around station six. If you use the same system of establishing stations and break the 210’s DWL into 10 segments, you will find the max beam around station nine! There is even a curious little hook in the deck line right at station nine. The result of this shape is extreme maximization of the small volume available in 21 feet and a wide platform aft to optimize the righting moment effect of crew weight.

(We’ve always called this boat a big dinghy with a keel on it.  A dinghy is a sailboat that can flip over and requires the crew’s weight on the rail to hold it down.  The Beneteau First 21.0 is very sensitive to crew weight, and reacts immediately to changes – but it won’t flip over if the crew fails to react.  That makes it ideal for learning and training.)

ben 20 birdseye

“The extremely high-aspect-ratio centerboard ( ed. note: it’s a ballasted swing keel, not a centerboard or centerboard keel) is housed in an odd shaped nacelle below the hull for a board-up draft of 2 feet, 3 inches. Almost every appendage is a candidate for “ellipticalization” these days, and I find it interesting that the designers have ended this board in a sharp point. In profile, the rudder looks ridiculously small until you realize that there are in fact two rudders. They are canted outboard at 15 degrees. With this extreme distribution of beam aft a normal rudder would pull almost clear of the water at high degrees of heel. With the two rudders, when the boat is heeled one of the rudders will still be at an effective working angle with the water. This is a slick way of reducing the required draft of the rudders. Note that the draft of the twin rudders is the same as the draft of the board housing. The rudders are linked through the member at the top of the open transom.

ben 20 sailing

(The design was great by itself, but what puts it over the top is the twin rudders.  Sailboats lean to the side naturally, as shown in the pic above. The more they lean, however, the less effective their rudder (steering fin) becomes.  It loses its bite on the water, so it has to be held to one side to go straight.  This creates drag and further reduces its effectiveness.  But the twin rudders on the First 21.0, each one angled outward, become straight when the boat heels a normal amount, and when the boat heels too much, the rudder angle isn’t bad. This makes for a forgiving feel that allows students to learn from mistakes rather than be confused or overwhelmed by them.  And that makes them better able to sail any boat afterward.)

“There are no overhangs on this little packet. The bow profile shows a hint of concavity to allow some flare into the forward sections. There is also a tiny amount of tumblehome in the midsection with a moderate BWL.

“The shrouds are taken to the deck edge allowing a small jib to be sheeted inside. The mainsheet sheets to a single attachment point on the cockpit sole. All halyards lead aft to jammers within easy reach of the helm. The spar is deck stepped with a hinged step. The interior is a one piece GRP molding with small sink and one burner stove. The portable head is under the V-berth. The small interior space is divided by a trunk that carries that top of the swing keel. A hinged leaf table is attached to this trunk. The four berths are all adult sized.

“On deck, the swim ladder and outboard bracket fit neatly between the twin rudders. The two cockpit lockers contain a space specifically for the outboard fuel tank. The bubblelike desk is striking and set off by a varnished mahogany toerail.

asa first 22 1 boat 1 couple

“The First 210 appears to combine careful styling with performance and safety. The general approach to this design is similar to the Mini-Transatlantic Class, but the boat is not as radical in proportions as a true mini-transat racer. Beneteau’s tooling of molded parts is as good as any in the business and their approach to finish and style is perhaps the best in the business. These aspects combine to ensure that the little 210 will be a standout.”

(“Mini-transat” refers to the Mini 6.5 class boat: 6.5 meters, basically the same as the first 21.0.  It’s a serious racer.  How serious?  They are raced singlehanded across the Atlantic – with spinnaker.  No shit. They have twin rudders like the Beneteaus.  This class is also raced doublehanded for some regattas.)

ben b & w spinn

We love this boat, and while they’re fewer and farther between, and much more expensive to buy than the boats more commonly used in sailing schools (J-24’s and Sonars come to mind), they’re worth it as they just work better for teaching.

“Don’t take our word for it!”  Everyone says they have the best boat.  But this is the only design ever endorsed for sailing instruction by a national sail training or sailing school organization such as ASA or US Sailing.

This is a great article. I’m a newb and in Japan looking at a “Baby Ben ” for sale. Before this article I thought it was special , now I’m in love

I doubt you’ll be sorry if you get one! They’re super versatile. Some of our new Club members this past season had a lot of time on J/24’s and 105’s prior to joining us, and they fell in love with the Baby Ben by comparison to the J/24. The First 21 is a pedigree design that happens to be comfortable, ergonomic and also very forgiving. Good luck! Send us a pic if you get one.

The Beneteau First 21.0 is definitely a nice boat. It would be interesting to know why Europeans call it “Baby Ben.” I would be grateful if you could tell me!

For a long time, it was the smallest Beneteau made. They now make one or two models smaller than it. So, the family grows…

Is it safe to dry out on the mud? I would like to use in the Solent but many anchorage’s dry out.

Hi Graham: While we’ve seen plenty of photos of boats adry on the Solent, etc, we’ve not experienced that for ourselves. The 21 has a retractable keel, and if left to its own devices, the hull will lower down to the trailing edge of the keel if the keel is supported on the bottom. If not, it will sink down into the mud and the hull will rest on it. The hull is wide and relatively flat further aft, so that would keep the boat level. However, the rudders on the older models (if not all) do not retract. If they rested on firmer substrate, they could be damaged. So, the net-net? Dunno! But, if the bottom is soft, you should be fine.

Any idea where to get the outboard engine vertical track mount? I really just need the part that slides up and down that the outboard mounts to. Thanks!

I MIGHT have an extra – DM me through the site’s contact page and I’ll keep in touch with you about it!

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.

Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.

These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocketed potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

NAVAL DESIGNER  : Finot - Conq Architects

Exterior design

The First 20 has a harmonious and high-performing Finot-Conq hull that proves a model of stability. Thanks to an unstayed mast she features a generous sail plan with a square-top mainsail, 2016 code zero and asymmetric spinnaker on option. Yachtsmen are keen on the twin rudder helm and the chain locker.

Interior design

Increasingly habitable and comfortable, the First 20’s interior has done away with bulkheads. By replacing the mast prop with a structure built into the deck, this coastal cruiser offers a feeling of interior space second to none. Inside she is bathed in light by the deck hatch, and generously spacious with four berths and many storage spaces. She suits a wide variety of programmes.

Multi-programme

Whether for day-sailing or short cruises, the First 20 can adapt to all programmes, and all stretches of water. With her lifting keel and outboard engine, she can be beached and transported on a trailer.

Theunstayed rig clears the deck and there is no need for low shrouds. Optimized with a square-top mainsail, the reasoning behind the sail plan is a combination of simplicity and performance.  With a furling genoa and 2016 code zero, the First 20 is ready for some remarkable achievements !

Although the First 20 has a racing temperament, she makes no concessions when it comes to safety. Her 1.80 m lifting keel contributes to her stability and improves her performance close-hauled.

US plummeted in world happiness ranking because of young people like me. I'll tell you why.

Maybe it's capitalism, maybe it's the apocalypse..

Young people in the United States aren’t happy. At least, that’s the takeaway from this year’s World Happiness Report .

The annual analysis by Gallup, the United Nations and more ranked the United States at No. 23, knocking the country out of the top 20 for the first time ever . It’s apparently all thanks to the folks under 30 – when they’re the only ones accounted for, the country falls to 62 in the rankings.

As someone who is under 30, I’m not surprised in the slightest. In the 2021-23 period, we have experienced huge life changes amid a pandemic, a new president and persistent economic anxiety. We, collectively, aren’t OK.

The happiness scores come from six criteria – GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity and corruption. Despite the large-scale criteria, I have some ideas as to why people my age are unhappier than older folks in the United States.

COVID pandemic happened right as we entered adulthood

One of the biggest sources of unhappiness for people my age has been the aftermath of COVID-19.

Think about it: For those of us entering adulthood four years ago, the “before” and “after” of the pandemic has been drastic. Some of these young people finished high school or college during COVID-19. Others were just starting their careers.

Suddenly, we all had to confront the reality of disease, of isolation and of government incompetence. Then we had to confront death – nearly 1.2 million people have died of COVID-19 since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began tracking cases in 2020.

Then came the economic ramifications. A USA TODAY analysis of Medicaid data revealed a 17% increase in Zoloft prescriptions from 2019 to 2022, and a 12% increase in mental health drug prescriptions overall.

Groceries got more expensive . Student loan payments restarted after a three-year pause. The cost of renting increased 15% between 2020 and 2022, and Redfin data from 2023 showed a 44% increase in the country’s median home price since January 2020.

For people under 30, these financial stressors hit during a coming-of-age period that is defined by the very things that went upside down.

Conversely, there have also been increases in youth suicide and homicide rates since the start of the pandemic. These deaths also affect the emotional well-being of everyone in the victim’s immediate network.

Everyone went through the pandemic. The fact that it hit at such a specific time – when so many of us were transitioning to adulthood – made it difficult, and the "after" is still being felt.

Don't believe Gen Z will vote for Biden. My generation is up for grabs this election.

Gen Z lost rights while gaining political polarization

One of the other reasons young people in the United States may be feeling down is the loss of a right that our parents had – the right to an abortion nationwide. This is something that has disproportionately affected young women in particular, to the point that it will be a deciding factor come November.

According to KFF ( formerly Kaiser Family Foundation ), 1 in 8 voters now say abortion is most important to their vote. Last year, Gallup polling showed that 48% of 18- to 29-year-olds want legal abortion under any circumstances, and that 41% say it should be legal under certain circumstances.

Aside from the loss of Roe v. Wade, we're also in an election year. Right now, it feels like political polarization is at an all-time high, because we are being inundated with rhetoric. Everywhere you turn, political ads are reminding us of what is at stake this election – the reality of four more years of former President Donald Trump and his antics, or four more years of President Joe Biden and traditional Democratic politics despite a desire for something more.

Social media, doomscrolling impact mental health

A lot of this bubbles to the surface on social media, which already has proved to have negative effects on mental health. For me, using platforms like X and Instagram either leads to doomscrolling or a never-ending feed of consumer culture – people telling me what to buy, whether they're influencers or advertisers.

Biden, focus on voters not memes: I don't want my president to be a TikTok influencer. Biden is wasting time making jokes.

The solution to this, of course, is for us to use social media less . That's easier said than done when there are so many of us who rely on social media to grow our professional network, find new clients or simply to keep up with our friends.

Maybe it's easier for people who grew up without social media to give it up. It's harder for us who grew up through social media to see a world without it, even if it might make us happier.

OK, boomer: US ranks No. 10 when only older Americans are counted

The over-60 crowd in the United States seems much happier than their young counterparts. The country ranks 10th in the World Happiness Report when only that demographic counted.

Obviously, something has made their lives more bearable. They might be closer to paying off debts , or close to the possibility of retirement. Maybe it’s their marriage or children. Or maybe they're all fibbing and actually feel dreadful.

I’m jealous of the joy boomers and the Silent Generation apparently possess.

Or maybe the reality is that things are, in fact, not OK. We have lived through unprecedented times for the past few years, and now we're seeing the aftermath. It's not really surprising that young people aren't as happy as the rest of you – just don't expect us to grin and bear it, please.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Purdue center Zach Edey took care of some unfinished business Friday night.

He made a little more history, too.

Edey produced the first 30-point, 20-rebound NCAA Tournament game since 1995 and emphatically ended the discussion about first-round March Madness exits by leading the top-seeded Boilermakers past 16th-seeeded Grambling State 78-50.

“You say this was a big stage but it’s just basketball,” Edey said. “I kind of came out, tried to set the tone, tried to play as hard as I could, tried to send a message to the team that we’re here, we’re ready, we’re good, and mentally we’re good. Send a message to the country that we’re good.”

The questions began 372 days ago when Fairleigh Dickinson became the second No. 16 seed to defeat a top seed, but the steely-eyed Canadian refused to let it happen to Purdue again.

The greatest scorer and rebounder in school history finished with 30 points, 21 rebounds, three blocks and two steals in 30 minutes.

He went 11 of 17 from the field and when he did miss, he often scored on putbacks or drew fouls. Defensively, he changed shots, gobbled up even more rebounds and constantly challenged the Tigers with his 7-foot-4, 300-pound body. Purdue held a 48-23 rebounding advantage, too.

Just how good was Edey? The last player with a 30-20 game in the tournament was Joe Smith of Maryland on March 18, 1995.

Edey, who could become the first back-to-back winner of national player of the year since Ralph Sampson in the early 1980s, is the first Division I player with 800 points, 400 rebounds, 50 blocks and 50 assists in one season.

“We played one of the best schedules in the country, we played in one of the best leagues in the country, so we’ve been challenged,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “This is what we know — this is what we get judged on. But you can’t forget to have fun, and you can’t forget to go out there and compete and just lay it on the line. But like Zach said, it’s a basketball game. We go out there and have some fun with it.”

The Tigers (21-15) certainly didn’t have much fun against Purdue or Edey.

Tra’Michael Moton had 21 points for the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament champs, who emerged as an early tourney darling with an overtime victory over Montana State in the First Four in their first NCAA tourney game. Kintavious Dozier finished with 16 points.

“I don’t think anybody has seen anything like Zach Edey,” Dozier said. “That’s kind of unreal. What they say he is on paper, he’s exactly that.”

Unlike last March, Purdue left no doubt about who had the better team — or the best player.

The Boilermakers built a 36-27 halftime lead in front of a sellout crowd largely clad in the school’s dominant black color, 60 miles from the school’s campus. Edey certainly played to the loud fans hoping to thwart another early postseason exit, helping the Boilermakers open the second half on an 18-6 spurt. They never looked back.

“I would tell them to figure out how they’re going to handle Zach Edey,” Grambling coach Donte’ Jackson said when asked about his advice for future opponents. “The reality of the situation is I hope you’re equipped for it. We’re just not equipped to play — we don’t see Zach Edey. We don’t see anyone as physical or dominant as him.”

Braden Smith added 11 points and 10 assists for the Boilermakers (30-4), who tied the single-season school record for wins.

Purdue can book a Sweet 16 trip to Detroit if it beats No. 8 seed Utah State on Sunday. The Aggies defeated TCU 88-72.

Trader Joe's has raised the price of one of its most popular products for the first time in over 20 years

thumbnail

One of Trader Joe's most popular products has just gotten its first-ever price increase.

The popular grocery store chain recently raised the price of its individually-sold bananas by roughly 20%, to 23 cents from 19 cents.

Trader Joe's bananas have cost 19 cents apiece since the chain first started selling them individually back in 2001. The never-changing price tag became a selling point for the fruit, with signage at some Trader Joe's locations boasting about the store's refusal to increase the cost of potassium-rich produce.

The 19-cent bananas have proved so popular over the years that they recently made the Trader Joe's Product Hall of Fame .

In a statement to CNBC Make It, a representative for the brand said that the new price "still represents a tremendous everyday value for bananas."

"We only change our prices when our costs change, and after holding our price for bananas at 19¢ each for more than two decades, we've now reached a point where this change is necessary," they said.

The spokesperson noted that although banana prices were going up, the price of other produce items such as romaine hearts, bell peppers and green onions have all gone down.

Trader Joe's didn't always sell its bananas individually. The grocer used to sell them by the pound like other retailers, but because its stores don't have scales, the bananas were weighed and packaged in its warehouse.

In the first-ever episode of the " Inside Trader Joe's " podcast, then-CEO Dan Bane said that changed when he noticed an elderly woman browsing the bananas but not buying any. Bane approached her and asked why she didn't take a bag of them.

"She said to me 'Sonny, I may not live to that fourth banana,'" he said on the 2018 episode. "And so we decided the next day we were going to sell individual bananas. And they've been 19 cents ever since."

Dozens of high school students, 2 adults from Connecticut rowing club rescued after boats capsize

By Katie Houlis, CBS New York Team, Alecia Reid

Updated on: March 21, 2024 / 11:09 AM EDT / CBS New York

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Nearly 30 members of a Connecticut rowing club, including more than two dozen high schoolers, were rescued from the  Long Island Sound  on Wednesday after their boats capsized.

Police said just before 5 p.m., three rowing sculls and one chase boat launched from Saugatuck Rowing Club in  Westport . Each rowing scull carried nine rowers, all males between the ages of 14-18. The chase boat was operated by one coach.

Rowing club releases statement

The Saugatuck Rowing Club released a statement about the rescue, thanking emergency responders.

"First and foremost, we are grateful that all 29 individuals involved in the incident are safe and accounted for. Two students had hypothermia and were taken to Norwalk Hospital, and they have recovered. Our rower's well-being remains our utmost priority, and we commend the swift and effective response of the authorities involved in ensuring their rescue. As with any outdoor sport, rowing inherently involves certain risks, and our club takes comprehensive measures to prioritize safety. However, despite thorough planning and adherence to safety protocols, unexpected weather changes can occur, as was the case in this instance. We are currently conducting a review of the incident to understand the circumstances fully and to identify any areas where our safety procedures can be further strengthened. In the meantime, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all emergency responders involved: Marine Police, Firefighters, EMTs and The Coast Guard, for their professionalism and dedication in ensuring the safety of our young rowers and coaches. Saugatuck Rowing Club remains dedicated to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for all members, and we appreciate the continued support of our community during this time."

What led to the rowing accident?

According to police, as the boats reached Cockenoe Island, the weather began to change and they tried to head back to the club, but two of the rowing sculls began to take on water and capsized, throwing 18 students into the water. Some of the students then swam to the chase boat and hung onto the side, which caused the chase boat to sink.

Sixteen-year-old Davis Evans was on one of the boats that capsized and had to be rescued.

"It was really scary. I'm still kinda shaken up," he said. "It was really clean and then really right as we spun, it just, it got windy and the waves were just crashing into our boat and it was just filling up with water. It was really scary."

Police say a second coach launched another chase boat from the rowing club and began to shuttle people to Compo Beach Marina as first responders were sent to the scene.

"We had dispatch reports that were coming from 911 calls from the actual incident on the water. So the first calls were actually from someone [who] reported that they were in a capsized boat and in the water," Westport Deputy Fire Chief Nicholas Marsan said.

According to police, the temperature of the water was approximately 44 degrees at the time.

Chaotic scene in water and on shore

"Responding units found a chaotic scene of youths swimming to shore. Some of them were arriving by boat. Some were swimming. Some were still in the water between Compo Beach and Cockenoe Island," Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas said. "First responders immediately began providing care to those individuals who were on shore and coordinating the recovery of people in the water."

"When we finally got back on the beach, we had to run back on the beach towards the trucks and we were, like, falling and stuff. We couldn't really walk. It was rough," Davis said.

The rescues

A total of 27 high school students and two adults were rescued, with at least 12 rowers being pulled out of the water by Westport Marine Police and the Westport Fire Department.

Police say the last victim was recovered from the water around 6 p.m. -- somewhere between 48-52 minutes after the boats capsized.

Two students were taken to a local hospital to be treated for hypothermia. The rest of the victims were treated on the scene.

"Team effort"

"This was truly an incredible team effort by all. By the coaches that were involved from the rowing club and by all the first responders," Koskinas said.

When asked if he'll be back on the water any time soon, Davis said, "Yeah, rowing is my sport. It's what I do."

We reached out to Saugatuck Rowing Club, but they declined to comment.

The police chief says they're still looking into exactly what happened out on the water. The goal of the investigation is to work with community partners to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.
