The Royal North Sea Yacht Club was established in the winter of 1946-1947 by a group of young enthusiasts sailing Snipes and Papillons. The then Lord Mayor of Ostend, Henri Serruys, put The Montgomery dock at the disposal of the Club and with the Commodore Georges Timmermans DSC at the helm, this great yacht Club was born. The first Dragons appeared at the Club in the 50’s and since then the Dragon fleet has been the core of the Club’s activities. The ‘ELAN’ donated to late King Baudouin I has been very active Dragon of the fleet. Over the years many major Championships, RORC and Yacht Races have been organised by the RNSYC and visited Ostend. The RNSYC persuing relentlessly its efforts to promote the sailing activities was awarded ahead of major applicants, the organisation of the Dragon Gold Cup 2001, in co-operation with the International Dragon Association, The KBYV – FRBY, the Belgian Dragon Association and thanks to the board as well as all club members the Dragon Gold Cup 2001 became a magnificent and successful event.

Superb view. Restaurant for members only! Very good Dover sole

Typical not too much hassle marina restaurant with good quality brasserie type food in relaxed atmosphere. Wonderful bouillabaisse and shrimp salad. Great harbour views. Friendly staff.

Just had lunch at this place while racing in the club. To go into the restaurant you need to be a member of a sailing club but I don’t think they check. View out in the harbor is fantastic, fish is well made and fresh.... Service was ok. But honestly speaking the pricing is ridiculous. A Sole mariniere with just Salat and chips for € 33,80 I hardly ever had before. At least not in a sailing club restaurant. Tomorrow’s lunch I will definitely have in one of the many more restaurants around. More

Very poor quality, where the food was rather good in the past, prices are going up and food we got was nearly eatable. Toilets were dirty, no soap, no towel. I was so embarrassed to my friends that I forgot to take pictures.

If a warm welcome or friendly staff reflects the start of a perfect evening well... sorry! This little nervous impolite rude lady made it an unforgettable evening ( in a bad way). Perhaps she doesn’t know who pays her salary nor that she isn’t Royal... ! tssssss shame More

The management should make up it' mind up about the fact if this is a private venue or not. If it is a private venue it has no place in Tripadvisor. I have been sailing for more than 40 years and I have never experienced... such unfriendlyness. The waitress in casual clothes simply refused to serve me claiming that is a private club memebers only. But this members rule does not seem to be so strict as I saw there was a monthly dinner of the Fifty-one club Oostende, for sure not all members of the sailing club. More

Overpriced for nothing very memorable. Sour service. I thought we had done something wrong but then I saw other reviews. Shame really because one of our diners came a month ago and was very positive. There surroundings are nice, I guess and these are were... comfy! More

I've eaten here many times (always good), but last Monday evening was exceptional. The Cod on mashed potato and spinach was perfect. I never tire of watching the boats coming in and out. When it's warmer the terrace is lovely. If you can get it... in, you'll enjoy yourself. More

We have been here several times over the years. Service is very friendly. The restaurant is a private club so you must be invited by a member to get in. Food is most seafood and fish, only fresh from the market, if they are sold... out they will tell. Nothing out of the freezer. The chef prepares authentic classics but also dishes with a thai touch. And every day they have a very good cheap lunch special. More

The level of service is very much below the line. In a yacht club I would have expected to have a more customer oriented staff. Too bad, I am sorry

RNSYC is always friendly and welcoming - as always the swell from the sea and the boats in the harbour make the basin a bouncy place to be - sometime uncomfortably so. The club facilities are good and the bar cheap. We didn't eat there... this year. More

Awfull food since the former coock has been fired. They even don't know how to prepare fresh belgian fries (as they ran out of the frozen ones)

This Yacht Club requires a membership to get access. Members of foreign Yacht Clubs are welcome. And members can bring guests. It's situated in a top location - the best - in Ostend. The food and service have been consistently outstanding for many years. It's... my favorite place for lunch or dinner because of the quality of the always fresh food, the friendly service, and the gorgeous views on the Yacht Harbor, the city line of Ostend, and the Channel. It is also good value for your money, and the interior is charmingly classic and maritime, very cosy ! More

Delicious local food prepared fresh on the day. Beautiful views of the harbour. Only drawback is that you have to be invited by a member of the Yacht Club to dine there. Luckily I have a friend who is. One of the best food experiences... in Ostend. More

Ate there the once and had a drink twice , both times found the service poor and the staff rude, to be told to stay there and wait was to much, while she sorted the music out, we only wanted to pay the bill! The... food was ok but expensive and the surrounding are nice,I would not go again and would not recommend unless you like to be treated like a univited guest at a private party More

Royal North Sea Yacht Club

RNSYC is an exclusive location, provided with a bar and a gastronomic restaurant and a multipurpose meeting room up to 40 persons. It is situated in the Ostend marina. Magnificent view over the harbour and the sea guaranteed.

The club was founded in 1946 by a close group of Snipe and Papillon sailors and has grown into one of the most dynamic water sports clubs and marinas on the Belgian coast. It is the only yacht club in Belgium located in the city centre. All shops, restaurants, train and bus connections, museums, etc. are within walking distance.

Royal North Sea Yacht Club

Op 15 april 1946 werd de Royal North Sea Yachtclub officieel boven de doopvont gehouden. De club viert hiermee 75 jaar aan roemrijke, maritieme geschiedenis en laat de leden delen in de feestvreugde. Terug naar de plek waar het allemaal begon: het Klein Strand in Oostende. Enkele diehards namen destijds het initiatief en de illustere John Bauwens stelde een noodwoning ter beschikking. In die tijd wou men de gruwelen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog snel vergeten en velen vonden in de watersport hun ding. Georges Timmerman, die zich als marineofficier onderscheidde op Juno Beach in 1944, werd de eerste commodore (voorzitter van een Royal Yachtclub). Hij bouwde de club verder uit met steun van het stadsbestuur.

In 1951 werd ons huidige clubgebouw ingehuldigd door burgemeester Henri Serruys en tal van notabelen. Z.M Koning Boudewijn werd de eerste ere-commodore en die verbondenheid met het koningshuis is altijd gebleven. De club groeide uit tot een begrip en organiseerde tal van nationale -en internationale wedstrijden zoals de prestigieuze “Tour de France à la Voile”. Meer dan zeven decennia later vormt de Royal North Sea Yachtclub nog steeds een vast waypoint voor menig zeiler. Zo organiseren we ruim 30 wedstrijden per jaar, zowel voor zwaardbootjes (vanaf het Klein Strand) als voor kajuitjachten, al dan niet in samenwerking met één van onze maritieme partnerclubs. Naar aanleiding van onze 75 ste verjaardag zetten wij de troeven van Oostende en haar haven extra in de kijker. Beide zijn onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden, hoewel het soms zoeken is naar een evenwicht tussen de economische belangen en de recreatieve mogelijkheden. 

Niettemin blijft de Royal North Sea Yachtclub werken aan een verdere uitbouw van de maritieme, recreatieve en sportieve mogelijkheden in onze haven. Oostende is en blijft het walhalla van de zeilsport aan de kust. Op naar 100 jaar Royal North Sea Yachtclub!

De Royal North Sea Yacht Club Oostende – het baken aan de kust

De Royal North Sea Yacht Club is een vereniging van booteigenaars en leden die sinds 1946 actief bezig is met allerhande facetten van de zeilsport. De “place to be” voor iedereen die wilt ontspannen aan de kust van Oostende. Onze club organiseert van mei tot augustus wedstrijden voor draken, zwaardboten en offshore jachten met meer dan 4000 deelnemers! Het ledenaantal groeide intussen al naar de 900, waaronder bedrijfsleiders, zakenmensen, verantwoordelijken van havenbedrijven en leden van het schepencollege. Stuk voor stuk mensen met heel wat verantwoordelijkheden in de bedrijfs-en nautische wereld. 

Vroeger 

De North Sea Yacht club werd in de winter van 1946 – 1947 gesticht door een groep jonge eigenaars van Snipes en Papillons. De officiële neerlegging bij de griffie was op 15 april 1947. Toen Henri Serruys, de toenmalige burgemeester van Oostende, het Montgomerydok aan de club ter beschikking stelde, zag onze zeilclub het levenslicht: de North Sea Yacht Club. 

Heden 

De club speelt sindsdien een cruciale rol in het maritieme landschap van Oostende en omstreken. De jachtclub, gelegen in het hart van de stad, kende een overweldigend succes en maakte heel wat gemoederen los in het naoorlogse Oostende. De eerste drakenvloot ontstond in de jaren 50 en de Draken zijn sindsdien kind aan huis in de zeilclub. Onder het voorzitterschap van commodore Jean Jacques DeCloedt werd in de jaren 60 de zeilschool binnen de club opgestart. Een primeur in die tijd! Twintig jaar later bereikte het succes van onze zeilschool zijn hoogtepunt.

De vroegere juniores werden monitor en zijn nu prille dertigers die actief deelnemen aan talrijke zeilwedstrijden. De bloeiperiode kwam echter tot verval vanwege strengere veiligheidsreglementen. Gelukkig is er sinds enkele jaren opnieuw een kentering merkbaar. Zo nam het wedstrijdcomité verschillende initiatieven gaande van de aankoop van twee SB20 zwaardboten tot de lancering van het start2race-project op half-tonners! Samen met de beachclub Twins in Bredene investeerde de Royal North Sea Yacht Club in de aankoop van twee J24 kajuitjachten die dienst doen in een gemeenschappelijke zeilschool. De twee vaartuigen Gin & Tonic en Eau Nord hebben hun vaste ligplaats in het Montgomerydok!

De club stapte in een project met de VZW Oostende voor Anker om een 37 voeter aan te schaffen met het oog op het organiseren van zeilinitiaties. Hieruit vloeide ook een project voort gericht op jongeren uit probleemsituaties, die zo de kans krijgen om mee op vaartocht te gaan. Deze nieuwe initiatieven tonen aan hoe de trend naar verjonging zich duidelijk manifesteert, ook onder de leden trouwens. Hierbij ligt de focus niet alleen op de zeilschool, evengoed organiseert de club diverse kampioenschappen. Zo vormt de Royal North Sea Yacht Club (afgekort RNSYC) vaak het bruisende hart voor prestigieuze evenementen, zoals de European Dragon Championship, maar ook diverse Dragon Gold Cups, de Tour de France à la voile en het Noordzeekampioenschap.

Tot 2013 was de club ook medeorganisator van “Sailing for Ostend”, een wedstrijd voor kleinzeilerij. Onder impuls van onze club werd het programma aangevuld met het Belgische Kampioenschap Finn en Moth Europe vanaf het Klein Strand (gelegen tussen het Westerstaketsel en de Westelijke Strekdam). Dit gaf een welgekomen nieuw elan aan de wedstrijd. Vorig jaar kwamen daar nog twee Laser wedstrijden bij, eveneens vanaf het Klein Strand. 

De afgelopen jaren groeide ook het initiatief van de woensdagavondwedstrijden uit tot een groot succes. Een topper van formaat! En dit dankzij de inzet van een handvol leden. De amicale wedstrijden vormen een goede training voor de competitiezeilers, maar beginnende zeilers (en zelfs niet-zeilers) zijn evengoed welkom. Een gezellige get together , daar draait het rond. 

Dit jaar viert de RNSYC een jubileum om u tegen te zeggen. De club blikt niet alleen terug op driekwart eeuw ervaring, maar kijkt ook vooruit. Als thuishaven van de actiefste wedstrijdvloot zeiljachten van de hele Belgische kust en draaischijf voor internationale kielbootklassen zoals J24, Draak en SB20, is het duidelijk welke koers te varen. De club investeert en moderniseert zowel de werking als de infrastructuur, om zo haar troeven maximaal uitspelen.

Ook bij de zwaardboten komen de internationale eenheidsklassen zoals Laser, Europe en Finn bij onze club steeds sterker aan bod. De gunstige ligging aan het Klein Strand van Oostende, leent zich perfect als uitvalsbasis voor evenementen. Na een kwartier varen bereik je de wedstrijdzone. De goede bereikbaarheid aan de rand van de stad vormt een bijkomend voordeel. Zowel het station als het stadscentrum bevinden zich op wandelafstand. De luchthaven van Oostende ligt slechts op tien kilometer.

De mijlpaal van 75 jaar Royal North Sea Yacht Club is er een van passie voor de zee en de zeilsport. Tegelijk heeft de club een rooskleurige toekomst voor de boeg. Denk daarbij aan verdere verfraaiingen van de infrastructuur, de plaatsing van nieuwe pontons en nieuwe synergieën die ontstaan, zoals het hoofdaandeelhouderschap van de club in de Mercator Marina. Op die manier dienen zich voor beide verenigingen opportuniteiten aan en kunnen in totaal ruim 150 jachten aanmeren in Oostende. Met het nieuwe bestuur aan het roer waait er een frisse, dynamische wind door de grootste jachtclub van Oostende. Zoveel is duidelijk! Op naar de volgende 25 jaar!
