Standing out from the crowd with a metallic-bronze hull, the neo-classic fast cruising cutter was commissioned by an experienced owner who returned to Dykstra Naval Architects following the success of his previous yacht, a Dykstra 60. This time, he wanted to undertake longer passages in comfort but without compromising on speed.

The owner chartered a collection of sailing yachts to iron out his wish list, including a larger yacht with excellent sailing characteristics, ease of maintenance and power-saving systems. With 65 feet of extra length, Perseverance delivers. Plus it has a luxurious interior by deVosdeVries Design and a double cockpit deck layout. The yacht is also equipped with a high-aspect rudder and lifting keel to enhance sailing capabilities. “The goal for the owner was to have a classic sloop with clean deck equipment to make it easy to handle when sailing,” Tommy Johansson, project manager at Baltic Yachts , told Robb Report during a tour of the boat. “So, the yacht can set and furl its sails via push buttons for easy short-handed cruising.”

Perseverance bears many of the traditional hallmarks for which Dykstra is known, including a straight stem, distinctive deep bulwarks and truncated counter. Its deck house, skinned in teak, has individual rectangular windows that provide classic appeal. Like the timber caprail, the wood is treated with oil rather than varnish to reduce maintenance and steer away from a high-gloss finish. The center cockpit—one of the owner’s favorite places on board—is shaded by a mini hardtop that can be lowered to protect the seating and dining area against salt spray when not in use. Inside, light-gray oak, maple and leather-stitched details create a gentleman’s club-meets-industrial-chic ambience. Subtle LED lighting gives a modern touch. The main salon is light and airy, with high ceilings that provide decent headroom and knurled hardware in a dark-matte vintage patina.

Perseverance sleeps eight guests in four cabins, comprising a master suite, one VIP cabin and two twins. They are all fitted with sensors that monitor the interior temperature based on guest occupancy. When not in use, the temperature automatically adjusts to save on energy.

The yacht has cruised extensively since her delivery last year, already clocking 10,000 nautical miles at an average speed of 20 knots. Building a yacht with sustainable credentials was a key prerequisite for the owner. Perseverance ’s diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system can regenerate 20 to 25 kilowatts while under way at 12 to 14 knots, recharging the batteries in 4.5 hours, which then provide up to nine hours of silent running at anchor.

“It means the yacht can head out for a day’s sailing and return to the marina without using its engines,” says Johansson. “In fact, the owner has done that already, enjoying nine hours of silent cruising with only the batteries powering the hotel load.”

Perseverance is now in the Caribbean, with the owner making the most of his easy sailer by spending as much time at the wheel as possible.

Walkthrough The 117-foot Crescent Superyacht

At a length o 117-feet, this 2020 Crescent 117 is filled with incredible amenities that make it perfect for entertaining lounging and dining. In Denison Yacht Sales’ latest walkthrough video, Ari Sherr takes us through this immaculate superyacht and shows off each and every one of its amenities and features. With five guest staterooms, each with their own en-suite bath, and a full-beam master stateroom, the Crescent 117 can accommodate up to ten guests. But those accommodations aren’t limited to just guest rooms as she also offers spacious areas with bountiful seating. This includes the salon that takes up the full 24-foot beam of the yacht. Ten windows surround the salon, providing gorgeous views to those resting on the L-shaped couches. Other areas made for entertaining include the formal dining room, jacuzzi, breakfast nook, secluded sun pads on the bow, sunning deck with a jacuzzi and an oversized aft platform.

SUMMARY & LAYOUT

CRESCENT LADY was completed by Crescent Yachts in Vancouver Canada in 2020 and due to the import/export restrictions in Canada during Covid she was not able to arrive in Florida to be sold until 2022. She is being sold as a new yacht with full builders & manufacturers warranties in place.

When comparing her to other similar size & aged yachts on the market she represents an excellent opportunity.

She sleeps 10 guests in 5 cabins with 4 cabins located on the lower level including a full beam master ensuite with walk-in closet & sitting area. Forward of the galley is the fifth cabin which could also be used as a Captain's cabin due to location.

Substantial crew accommodations back aft sleep up to 6 crew in 3 cabins including a spacious ensuite captains cabin, bunk room and queen crew cabin that share a Jack & Jill bathroom.

The main salon has an open floor plan that includes a sitting area, large pop-up tv and formal dining. Forward to port is access to the country kitchen open galley & 5th guest cabin. To starboard is the day head, access to the dog-house and then stairs lead up to the wheelhouse while another set leads down to the guest cabins.

The wheel house is fantastic with excellent raised visibility for the captain and guests who can enjoy views from the 2 separate sitting areas.

The exterior of the vessel has numerous locations that allow guests to lounge & spread out starting with the massive aft deck complete with formal dining area, bar, tv, and sun pads that overlook the double-wide swim platform located below. Full walk arounds to both port & starboard lead to the bow area where you can find a raised sun bed that allows multiple people to relax and enjoy the sun or the view when underway.

Making your way up to the boat deck from the aft deck stairs you have an open space that will allow the owner to carry a substantial tender plus space for 2 full size jet skis & water sports toys. Complimenting the space is a BBQ, jacuzzi, and massive storage area which is accessible behind the stairs that lead to the upper sundeck.

The sundeck has a center line helm station with wing stations to both port & starboard. Built in L-shaped settees mirror one another. Part of the highlight of the yachts profile lines is the gorgeous hard top that has a well laid out mast and built in glass skylights.

CRESCENT LADY is a fantastic yacht which comes with a unique history which is worth sharing.

The hull was originally built for Destiny Yachts circa 2000 & was never completed. It sat unfinished until Crescent Yachts saw the opportunity, purchased the project in 2018 and over the next 2 years finished the build under the guidance of well respected designer & naval architect Gregory C Marshall.

The engines are also 2001 and were obviously never entered into service so they come with a standard 2 year warranty and have been brought up to current EPA standards with EIAPP certificates issued.

All major components including her generators and Zeus shore power converters are also offered with warranty. Galley equipment still has manuals in the drawers and have never been used. Her navigation package is the latest equipment as outlined in her technical specifications of this brochure.

I am sharing her history in order to give full disclosure & this also helps explain how a 2020 117ft yacht can be offered for such a competitive price. The builder has far more money invested into the build than the asking price so someone is going to end up with a great yacht at an even better price.

CRESCENT LADY is currently docked in the Free Trade Zone at Seahaven Superyacht Marina in the greater Fort Lauderdale area. Inspections and offers are highly recommended.

Royal Huisman’s Arcadia

Royal Huisman is one of the world’s premier builders of large sailing yachts. Just last year, the famed Dutch yard delivered Athena, a magnificent 295-footer that is one of the largest private sailing yachts ever built, and certainly the largest constructed entirely of aluminum. Even as Athena took shape, however, there were a number of “smaller yachts coming down the line behind her, all still well over 100 feet.

Among them, Arcadia is an attractive and traditionally styled 117-footer from the board of Tony Castro, with an interior by Dick Young. Nothing unusual there, except that Arcadia is a motoryacht, and a rather remarkable one at that.

I’d seen Arcadia a couple of times as she came together at Royal Huisman, but that did little to prepare me for the finished product as I boarded her at the quaint working seaport of Urk, Holland. Like a princess among peasants, she looked more than a bit out of place and eager to be gone-somewhere, anywhere-as tugs and fishboats of every description passed close by.

We soon obliged, with the moving horizon one of the few clues that Arcadia had slipped her moorings and was under way. Arcadia is among the quietest yachts I’ve ever experienced. Even at her full cruising speed of 10 knots, the level of conversation didn’t change as I chatted with Castro in the yacht’s saloon. Sound level measurements by the shipyard at this speed revealed just 48 decibels in the saloon, 47 in the owner’s stateroom, and 50 in the crew mess. By comparison, quiet conversation is about 60 decibels, so we were disturbing the yacht’s peace and quiet, not the other way around.

One significant contribution to Arcadia’s absence of noise is her propulsion system. Her twin Caterpillar engines make their full 540 hp at 1800 rpm. Arcadia also employs deep-reduction gears, ZF W2700s with a ratio of 4.484:1, turning five-blade, five-foot-diameter Wartsila props at 402 turns a minute. The props on a typical yacht with 2400 rpm engines and 2:1 gears are turning three times that fast. In addition, Arcadia’s propeller shafts and their bearings operate within an enclosed, oil-lubricated system by Akerboom, eliminating much of the turbulence and cavitation of open shafting, reducing both noise and vibration.

Castro took considerable pains in much of the development of this, his first major motoryacht commission. Working with MARIN, the well-respected Dutch model basin, the team utilized computational fluid dynamics (CFD) research on MARIN’s computers to explore various hull shapes and minimize propulsive resistance. A traditional tow-test model was also built to verify the computer results, and this physical model was used to check appendage and propeller details.

The choice of material for hull construction is a subject of constant debate, particularly for displacement yachts bound for extreme latitudes. (Arcadia is not ice-classed, but is “overscantling, according to Castro.) For Arcadia, Royal Huisman’s experience with the proprietary Alustar alloy tips the balance, offering advantages in weight and strength over common alloys. This reduction in structural weight reduces the hull’s displacement, correspondingly reducing wetted surface and resistance. True to his sailboat roots, Castro also used part of the weight savings to add internal ballast, lowering Arcadia’s vertical center of gravity and thereby decreasing her waterline beam, further reducing resistance while still maintaining stability.

Other noteworthy features, many coming from the owner’s 16 years of yachting experience, include zero-speed fin stabilizers, by VT Naiad Marine, for comfort at anchor, and a stern anchor tucked into Arcadia’s transom. Castro also reverted to sailboat design in specifying efficient high-aspect-ratio (tall and skinny) rudders, but fitting them with breakaway tips.

Of course, even for a gearhead like me, not all of Arcadia’s charms are buried in the finer points of naval architecture and marine engineering. Also aboard was Jonathan Rhoades, interior designer Dick Young’s project manager, who along with Scott Weaver, the owner’s interior decorator, was responsible for Arcadia’s warm and richly detailed interior. Teak and paneled mahogany were chosen, the perfect materials for Arcadia’s traditional styling. Abundant handrails and fiddles, common on sailboats and older motoryachts are delightfully functional. Doorways and cabinets with arched tops hark back to the days when such shapes were structural necessities. The overheads are white-lacquered planks with mahogany beams, and the planking above the mahogany wainscoting is duplicated on many bulkheads as well. Gimbaled lanterns and classic dome lights, all in brass, complement the dÈcor, while unobtrusive recessed pinlights help bring the illumination level up to modern expectations.

The arrangement, like the yacht itself, is a blend of old and new. Because Arcadia is designed for moderate speed, she carries her buoyancy farther forward than on a higher speed yacht, thus her engineroom is amidships. Guests are accommodated on the lower deck aft, while crew quarters are forward of the engineroom. Two guest staterooms, one with a queen berth and one with twins, open to a foyer adorned with antique barometers. Also sharing this foyer is the full-beam VIP suite, with a sitting room that quickly converts to a fourth stateroom.

The owner’s suite, forward on the main deck, is smaller than on many yachts of this length, thanks to Arcadia’s flush-deck configuration and full-length walkaround side decks. That’s not to say it’s any less grand, however, as the workmanship is superb. There is a large head with double sinks and both tub and shower, adorned throughout in marble, as well as sitting and vanity areas, and spacious lockers to meet the needs of extended time aboard.

The saloon and dining areas are especially well planned. Glass and mahogany cabinetry between the two spaces lend a feeling of intimacy and comfort while still allowing the light and airy feeling that keeps such rooms from seeming progressively smaller after days at sea, an effect carefully carried throughout the yacht.

I’ve spent many paragraphs in the pages of previous issues of Yachting extolling the virtues of Royal Huisman’s construction and outfitting, so there’s no need to repeat myself here. Arcadia is yet another exquisite example of Dutch craftmanship at its best. The only thing missing during my visit was patriarch Wolter Huisman’s broad hand on my shoulder and his smiling pride as he showed off the fruits of his beloved workers’ efforts; he may no longer be there, but the presence of his spirit is palpable. Arcadia, started under Wolter’s supervision and completed under the watchful eye of daughter Alice, now managing director, is every inch a Royal Huisman yacht, even without sails, and Wolter would love her as much as I do.
