Bancroft model boats are molded and hand finished using very intricate details and parts including metal, wood, plastic, and fiberglass. Because of their hand made nature, minor imperfections in the fiberglass, metalwork, or painting may exist. Bancroft scale RC boats are fragile so care should be taken when moving or transporting your model.

Some of the electronics in this Bancroft boat, including the Battery, ESC, Motor, and Receiver, are NOT intended to get wet; they are NOT water resistant. If any of these electronic components get wet and you attempt to operate your model, the water can cause an electrical short-circuit and void your warranty. In the rare instance that you get water inside your vessel, you should drain the water completely and allow all electronics to fully dry before attempting to operate your model.

Most kits and RTR (ready-to-run) model RC sail boats are best categorized as RC sport scale. This category is a happy medium between full-blown scale models and RC racing yachts.

Some have become so widely distributed that new racing classes has been formed around them. Good examples are Graupner's Micro Magic and Kyosho's Fairwind.

They are usually semi-scale of modern cruising yachts or made to resemble America’s cup sailboats.

The lower cost models come with ABS hulls, whereas the higher end models come with more durable fiberglass hulls. Drop keels, aluminum masts and Dacron sails are most common.

RC racing yachts

If you want to get into RC yacht racing there are a number of classes to choose from. Each country has a governing body ( American Model Yachting Association (AMYA) in the USA, Model Yachting Association in the UK) under the International Model Yacht Racing Union.

As with full size regattas, RC model yacht racing face some of the same issues. Entry rules for competitions typically follow depending on if the class is Open or Closed Design.

Open or Construction Class

What these classes have in common is that the boats are not identical - instead the rules are made up like a mathematical formula. The good thing that brings is that the challenge is three-fold – design, construction and sailing the course.

The disadvantage is in that the rules for some classes can be complicated. Some classes have gained in popularity precisely because the rules fro previously established classes were so hard to understand.

Examples of some popular open design model yacht classes:

• 6 Metre - M6R
• 10 rater – R10r
• 36" (36-inch)

Closed Design or One-design Class

All entries have to be the same design. Some are kits from a single manufacturer others are open to home built model boats.

RC scale sail

We're talking about scale model sail boats that actually use its sails as the main means of propulsion. RC scale sail is called minisail in continental Europe. The vast majority of sailing scale model boats is scratch built. There are a few kits - Billings Collin Archer RS-1 comes to mind.

The prevailing problem with scaling a sailboat is that stability doesn’t scale linearly with size. The result is that model boats will always be significantly less stable than the boat or ship it was modeled after. Left as is, it may have detrimental effects on the model’s sea keeping abilities. There are ways to minimize the effect.

A smallish boat built to a large scale is more stable than a large ship to a small scale. For instance, say you can only transport a model 1m long. Building a model of an 8m cruising yacht at 1:8 scale will be more stable than a model of the USS Constitution at 1:48 scale. This is true even if they end up weighing the same and being the same length. I bet the yacht will be a much better sailer too.

Bigger is always better too, when it comes to scale RC sailboats. Try and build the biggest model you can get away with. A larger model will be more forgiving on construction techniques, materials and the weight of components. The finished model will also be faster, a better sailer and handle stronger winds than if it was built smaller.

Making considerable effort to build light is always a god habit. The higher up a part or component is located, the more important this becomes. For instance, rigging components need to be light weight.

Other factors are beam and draft (width and depth for landlubbers). A wider and deeper hull will naturally be more stable than thin and shallow.

There are two tricks to increase the stability of model boats artificially:

Add a drop keel

By adding a drop keel you can bring the center of gravity down while adding profile area. The greater under-water profile helps against drifting sideways. All sailboats drift downwind some, because the surface water moves with the wind. The lower boundary-layers of a body of water are influenced less by the wind than layers closer to the surface. Therefore, the deeper any extension of the hull is, the less drift.

Typically a boat with a drop-keel also needs a larger rudder. A good guideline is to make the rudder area 10-12% of the total submerged hull profile.

Extent the hull below the waterline

Some builders rather build the boat hull slightly out of scale than add a drop keel. The most bang-for-the-buck is to deepen the hull. Same rule apply about the rudder (rudder area = 10-12% of total submerged profile). You could technically make the hull wider, but the effect is not as great.

Any change in the submerged hull profile need to maintain the same geometric center to balance the center of effort on the sails. Naturally, if you know what you are doing, the sail and rig can be modified also.

A Final Word on Scale RC Sailboats

Generally stay away from lateen rigs, multi-hull, centerboard designs and square riggers, at least until you have become an experienced RC sailboats captain and/or builder.

Title: global-guided focal neural radiance field for large-scale scene rendering.

Abstract: Neural radiance fields~(NeRF) have recently been applied to render large-scale scenes. However, their limited model capacity typically results in blurred rendering results. Existing large-scale NeRFs primarily address this limitation by partitioning the scene into blocks, which are subsequently handled by separate sub-NeRFs. These sub-NeRFs, trained from scratch and processed independently, lead to inconsistencies in geometry and appearance across the scene. Consequently, the rendering quality fails to exhibit significant improvement despite the expansion of model capacity. In this work, we present global-guided focal neural radiance field (GF-NeRF) that achieves high-fidelity rendering of large-scale scenes. Our proposed GF-NeRF utilizes a two-stage (Global and Focal) architecture and a global-guided training strategy. The global stage obtains a continuous representation of the entire scene while the focal stage decomposes the scene into multiple blocks and further processes them with distinct sub-encoders. Leveraging this two-stage architecture, sub-encoders only need fine-tuning based on the global encoder, thus reducing training complexity in the focal stage while maintaining scene-wide consistency. Spatial information and error information from the global stage also benefit the sub-encoders to focus on crucial areas and effectively capture more details of large-scale scenes. Notably, our approach does not rely on any prior knowledge about the target scene, attributing GF-NeRF adaptable to various large-scale scene types, including street-view and aerial-view scenes. SAN JOSE, Calif., March 18, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- GTC — NVIDIA today announced its next-generation AI supercomputer — the NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD™ powered by NVIDIA GB200 Grace Blackwell Superchips — for processing trillion-parameter models with constant uptime for superscale generative AI training and inference workloads.

Featuring a new, highly efficient, liquid-cooled rack-scale architecture, the new DGX SuperPOD is built with NVIDIA DGX™ GB200 systems and provides 11.5 exaflops of AI supercomputing at FP4 precision and 240 terabytes of fast memory — scaling to more with additional racks.

Each DGX GB200 system features 36 NVIDIA GB200 Superchips — which include 36 NVIDIA Grace CPUs and 72 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs — connected as one supercomputer via fifth-generation NVIDIA NVLink ® . GB200 Superchips deliver up to a 30x performance increase compared to the NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPU for large language model inference workloads.

The Grace Blackwell-powered DGX SuperPOD features eight or more DGX GB200 systems and can scale to tens of thousands of GB200 Superchips connected via NVIDIA Quantum InfiniBand. For a massive shared memory space to power next-generation AI models, customers can deploy a configuration that connects the 576 Blackwell GPUs in eight DGX GB200 systems connected via NVLink.

New Rack-Scale DGX SuperPOD Architecture for Era of Generative AI The new DGX SuperPOD with DGX GB200 systems features a unified compute fabric. In addition to fifth-generation NVIDIA NVLink, the fabric includes NVIDIA BlueField ® -3 DPUs and will support NVIDIA Quantum-X800 InfiniBand networking, announced separately today . This architecture provides up to 1,800 gigabytes per second of bandwidth to each GPU in the platform.

Additionally, fourth-generation NVIDIA Scalable Hierarchical Aggregation and Reduction Protocol (SHARP)™ technology provides 14.4 teraflops of In-Network Computing, a 4x increase in the next-generation DGX SuperPOD architecture compared to the prior generation.

Turnkey Architecture Pairs With Advanced Software for Unprecedented Uptime The new DGX SuperPOD is a complete, data-center-scale AI supercomputer that integrates with high-performance storage from NVIDIA-certified partners to meet the demands of generative AI workloads. Each is built, cabled and tested in the factory to dramatically speed deployment at customer data centers.

The Grace Blackwell-powered DGX SuperPOD features intelligent predictive-management capabilities to continuously monitor thousands of data points across hardware and software to predict and intercept sources of downtime and inefficiency — saving time, energy and computing costs.

The software can identify areas of concern and plan for maintenance, flexibly adjust compute resources, and automatically save and resume jobs to prevent downtime, even without system administrators present.

If the software detects that a replacement component is needed, the cluster will activate standby capacity to ensure work finishes in time. Any required hardware replacements can be scheduled to avoid unplanned downtime.

NVIDIA DGX B200 Systems Advance AI Supercomputing for Industries NVIDIA also unveiled the NVIDIA DGX B200 system , a unified AI supercomputing platform for AI model training, fine-tuning and inference.

DGX B200 is the sixth generation of air-cooled, traditional rack-mounted DGX designs used by industries worldwide. The new Blackwell architecture DGX B200 system includes eight NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs and two 5th Gen Intel ® Xeon ® processors. Customers can also build DGX SuperPOD using DGX B200 systems to create AI Centers of Excellence that can power the work of large teams of developers running many different jobs.

DGX B200 systems include the FP4 precision feature in the new Blackwell architecture, providing up to 144 petaflops of AI performance, a massive 1.4TB of GPU memory and 64TB/s of memory bandwidth. Google researchers unveil ‘VLOGGER’, an AI that can bring still photos to life

Google researchers have developed a new artificial intelligence system that can generate lifelike videos of people speaking, gesturing and moving — from just a single still photo. The technology, called VLOGGER, relies on advanced machine learning models to synthesize startlingly realistic footage, opening up a range of potential applications while also raising concerns around deepfakes and misinformation.

Described in a research paper titled “ VLOGGER: Multimodal Diffusion for Embodied Avatar Synthesis ,” the AI model can take a photo of a person and an audio clip as input, and then output a video that matches the audio, showing the person speaking the words and making corresponding facial expressions, head movements and hand gestures. The videos are not perfect, with some artifacts, but represent a significant leap in the ability to animate still images.

A breakthrough in synthesizing talking heads

The researchers, led by Enric Corona at Google Research, leveraged a type of machine learning model called diffusion models to achieve the novel result. Diffusion models have recently shown remarkable performance at generating highly realistic images from text descriptions. By extending them into the video domain and training on a vast new dataset, the team was able to create an AI system that can bring photos to life in a highly convincing way.

“In contrast to previous work, our method does not require training for each person, does not rely on face detection and cropping, generates the complete image (not just the face or the lips), and considers a broad spectrum of scenarios (e.g. visible torso or diverse subject identities) that are critical to correctly synthesize humans who communicate,” the authors wrote.

A key enabler was the curation of a huge new dataset called MENTOR containing over 800,000 diverse identities and 2,200 hours of video — an order of magnitude larger than what was previously available. This allowed VLOGGER to learn to generate videos of people with varied ethnicities, ages, clothing, poses and surroundings without bias.

Potential applications and societal implications 

The technology opens up a range of compelling use cases. The paper demonstrates VLOGGER’s ability to automatically dub videos into other languages by simply swapping out the audio track, to seamlessly edit and fill in missing frames in a video, and to create full videos of a person from a single photo.

One could imagine actors being able to license detailed 3D models of themselves that could be used to generate new performances. The technology could also be used to create photorealistic avatars for virtual reality and gaming. And it might enable the creation of AI-powered virtual assistants and chatbots that are more engaging and expressive.

Google sees VLOGGER as a step toward “embodied conversational agents” that can engage with humans naturally through speech, gestures and eye contact. “VLOGGER can be used as a stand-alone solution for presentations, education, narration, low-bandwidth online communication, and as an interface for text-only human-computer interaction,” the authors wrote.

However, the technology also has the potential for misuse, for example in creating deepfakes — synthetic media in which a person in a video is replaced with someone else’s likeness. As these AI-generated videos become more realistic and easier to create, it could exacerbate the challenges around misinformation and digital fakery.

A new frontier in AI research

While impressive, VLOGGER still has limitations. The generated videos are relatively short and have a static background. The individuals don’t move around a 3D environment. And their mannerisms and speech patterns, while realistic, are not yet indistinguishable from those of real humans.

Nonetheless, VLOGGER represents a significant step forward. “We evaluate VLOGGER on three different benchmarks and show that the proposed model surpasses other state-of-the-art methods in image quality, identity preservation and temporal consistency,” the authors reported.

With further advances, this type of AI-generated media is likely to become ubiquitous. We may soon live in a world where it is hard to tell whether the person speaking to us in a video is real or generated by a computer program. 

VLOGGER provides an early glimpse of that future. It is a powerful demonstration of the rapid progress being made in artificial intelligence and a sign of the increasing challenges we will face in distinguishing between what is real and what is fake.
