Yachting was founded by Oswald Villard and first published on 1 January 1907; a year later he asked his lifelong friend, Herbert L. Stone to assume responsibility as Editor. With a short break during the First World War, for service in the US Navy and with William Atkin as Editor pro tem , Herbert Stone edited the magazine until 1952, becoming part owner in the 1930s, and remaining as Publisher and President until his death on September 27, 1955.
We are most grateful to Herbert Stone's grand-daughter for donating many of his bound, editor's copies; please see the detailed article in Canadian Yachting .
This monthly magazine started well: "Published monthly. 25 cents per copy. $2.00 per Year... For Canadian postage, add 50 cents." Until some twenty years ago, Yachting had an established reputation for sailing vessels, reporting racing, cruising and design news, but for some time now has moved towards bigger, more luxurious motor-yachts. We have a fairly complete collection up to 2012 - sporadic thereafter.

Thomas is president and CEO of Catalyst of San Diego & Imperial Counties and lives in Pacific Beach.
Catalyst of San Diego & Imperial Counties recently joined thousands of organizations around the world in changing our standard work schedule to four days. With a staff of 12, Catalyst of San Diego & Imperial Counties is a community of funders driven to actions that improve social outcomes for our region, and beyond. Together, we work across sectors, aisles and industries to increase equity-driven solutions to our region’s most pressing problems. Our staff works 32 hours per week with full compensation, benefits and paid time off. And we have a happier, more human-centric workplace, while continuing to meet and exceed organizational goals.
For numerous years, we celebrated summer Fridays — half or full days off for two or three sunshine-filled months. In 2023, building on what we’d learned from the blurred lines that COVID-19 brought to our newly remote and hybrid workplace, Catalyst decided to explore a more permanent arrangement. Numerous studies showed positive results, including a six-month experiment with 3,000 workers in the United Kingdom, demonstrating that the four-day workweek was a huge success for employees and companies alike.
Importantly, we noted that not only hours changed, but workplaces updated decades-old practices with new cultural norms and by adopting new technology. As a result, we reduced time spent in meetings, clarified priorities and redistributed authority. This streamlined tasks and decisions and resulted in equally or more productive workplaces.
Most importantly to us, employees reported greater job satisfaction. They felt more able to express themselves as whole people in the workplace — employees, but also parents, homeowners, artists and more — and mental health improved. Not only did organizations see positive effects on happiness and productivity, but employee retention improved as well, saving on recruitment and training costs, and keeping institutional knowledge in the organization. Since Catalyst’s work is grounded in relationships and knowledge-sharing, we were eager to build a workplace where the well-being of people drove our human resources policies and increased the longevity of our workforce.
During our pilot program, we administered pre- and post-surveys, and progress surveys during the experiment. We hosted regular check-ins to hear what people liked and what was difficult and to reinforce a culture in which we shared the responsibility that everyone, regardless of role, experienced the benefits of a shorter workweek. This was important since employees had varying deadlines and external relationships; we all made adjustments. It wasn’t all smooth sailing. We had to adjust for folks who had community events on Fridays, address people’s concerns that they might feel pressure to work more than eight hours in a day to get everything done, and balance the flexibility we’d built during COVID with the reduction in work hours.
We now have data to support what we knew instinctively: to help create caring communities where people thrive, we need to start in our own backyard. Catalyst employees report being happier, less stressed and having more time to enjoy life now. All of this aligns with our core values of building equitable, impactful and collaborative change ecosystems in the region. This didn’t make adopting a 32-hour workweek a slam dunk, but we collectively decided that if there was any time to take a leap, this is our moment. We’ll continue to track the impacts of this change on our employees, our members and our partners, and adjust as we go.
A four-day, 32-hours workweek is working for us here at Catalyst and we love sharing our experiences with other workplaces — except on Fridays.

Hong Kong buys broadcasting rights for Paris Olympics for undisclosed fee, as leader John Lee cites ‘value to society’

Hong Kong has purchased the broadcasting rights for the Paris Olympics this summer, with the games licensed to four TV stations in the city.
Addressing reporters at a weekly press conference on Tuesday, Chief Executive John Lee said Hongkongers would be able to watch the Olympics and the Paralympics on TVB, ViuTV, HOY TV and public broadcaster RTHK.
“[The purchasing of rights] is a response to Hongkongers’ wishes, allowing all Hongkongers to watch the Paris Olympics and Paralympics on TV for free so that we can all cheer for our athletes,” Lee said, speaking in Cantonese.
He added that the broadcasts would bring “immense value to society.”
The Olympics will take place in Paris, France, from July 26, and the Paralympics will begin about a month after. France is six hours behind Hong Kong, meaning that some medal finals will be in the early hours in the city.
Lee said that so far, Hong Kong athletes had qualified to compete in 15 events at the Olympics and 12 in the Paralympics. According to a Legislative Council document , the sports for the Olympics include cycling, sailing, swimming, table tennis and windsurfing. For the Paralympics, athletes are slated to compete in boccia, equestrian and swimming events.
He added that he believed athletes would clinch more qualifications in the lead up to the games.
Apart from in 2021, when the government bought the broadcast rights for the Tokyo Olympics, TV stations have historically negotiated with the International Olympic Committee to purchase rights and work out broadcast arrangements.
Hong Kong did not buy the license rights for the Winter Olympics in Beijing in 2022, which saw broadcaster TVB seal an exclusive deal to air the games.
‘Value for money’
Explaining why the government decided to purchase the broadcasting rights, Lee said “the current market situation may not support TV stations to make big investments.”
He did not share how much the government paid for the broadcasting rights, citing the confidentiality of agreements. But he said it was less than what the government had paid for the Tokyo Olympics, and what TV stations had paid in the past.
“The amount paid is reasonable and value for money,” Lee added.
The Hong Kong team saw its best ever results at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, walking away with six medals including two silver medals in swimming and a gold medal in fencing.
Lee said Hongkongers gathered at shopping malls to cheer for athletes, creating a sense of unity and boosting the atmosphere in society.
He acknowledged that viewership in Hong Kong might not be as high due to the time difference with France, but that the government’s purchase would be worth it.
“It won’t be as easy for us to promote [the Paris Olympics] compared to the Tokyo Olympics,” Lee said. “But I think there are still many ways. If it involves big events, I think… people will find their own ways, find their own time, even with the time difference, to watch live.”
