How to Set and Use the Rolex Yacht-Master II

Rolex Yacht-Master II ref 116681

Regatta races are an exciting way to test your sailing ability. The Rolex Yacht-Master II has a countdown timer so you can time your regatta race.

Not only does it look fantastic, but its highly specialized functions are powered by one of the most impressive movements Rolex has released to date. Using these functions though can be a frustrating and complicated path.

While there are number of steps to the process, Rolex designed it to be quick and simple once you get to know it.

With this guide, you’ll learn how to set the Rolex Yacht-Master II for a regatta, as well as how to use it during the race.

What is a regatta watch?

First of all, what is a regatta watch? The Rolex Yacht-Master II’s countdown timer is used to time events that involve boats or other competitive pursuits, such as sailing races, chariot races, and even football matches.

The goal of these events is to get from point A to point B in the fastest amount of time possible. To do this, teams will use the count-down timer on their watches to measure their progress and determine whether they should increase their speed or slow down if they are falling behind.

You’re probably wondering why you would need a watch with such an advanced feature if you aren’t partaking in regatta activities yourself. Well, there are plenty of instances where having the ability to time something accurately can be useful. Even everyday tasks like boiling your eggs perfectly or recording the length of timeouts count! The possibilities are endless.

How to Set your Countdown Timer on a Rolex Yacht-Master II

The countdown timer on the Rolex Yacht-Master II is an elegant and useful feature. You’ll need to set it up though before the beginning of the regatta to start the countdown at the appropriate time.

To set the countdown timer:

1. The timer needs to have stopped. If it is still going, push the upper pusher on the right hand side of the dial/case to stop the timer.

2. Once the timer is stopped, you need to turn the bezel to the left, or counterclockwise, a quarter turn. It will stop at a quarter as that’s as far as it can go, and it will click into place for you.

3. Push the bottom pusher on the right hand side of your case. When you push this button, it will stay pushed down. This bounces the second hand to zero or the 12 o’clock mark. The minute hand will also return itself back to wherever you previously had it set. Having the lower pusher depressed blocks you from pressing the upper pusher.

4. Unlock the crown by turning it counterclockwise. The crown is the center knob at the 3 o’clock position on the right hand side of your case. Turn the crown clockwise setting it to the minute that you need.

5. Once you’ve set the duration of your preferred countdown, you’re going to return to the bezel. Turn the bezel this time in a clockwise direction until the click, or a quarter turn. This action unlocks the upper pusher and lets go of the lower one.

6. Push your crown back in and rotate it clockwise until it locks. This ensures that your watch keeps its water resistance.

How to Use the Countdown Timer on your Rolex Yacht-Master II

The countdown timer on the Yacht-Master II is used to display how much time has passed in a race (or other endeavors). Many people use this feature when they’re tracking their own races, but it’s also useful for non-sporting activities.

Here’s how to use it:

1. Your top or upper pusher starts and stops your countdown. This is similar to other traditional Rolex complications like what you’d find on the Daytona . The lower pusher resets the timer.

2. The difference with the Yacht-Master from other chronograph watches is that you can jump forward or backward to the closest minute with a one touch to the lower button. There’s no need to reset the counter, wasting valuable time in a race.

3. To use the fly-back or fly-forward functions mentioned above, while the timer is running, give one quick press to the lower pusher. The timer resets itself to the closest minute while still running. This allows you to instantly start measuring the next duration, with no time lost.

Timing a Regatta Race using the Rolex Yacht-Master II

Ok, so your timer is set, and you know how to run it, but what are you supposed to do with it during a regatta race?

Regatta Racing (photo: Rolex)

1. If you’re unfamiliar with why you need a timer in a regatta, this isn’t unusual. A gun and a wave of a flag signal the countdown to the start of the race. When you see or hear this, then press the top pusher that starts the timer. If you did your job, your timer was set at the needed number of minutes ahead of time. At this point, the second hand is tracking the elapsed time since you started. The minutes hand will move every 60 seconds tracking the time until it hits the finish or zero. End of a countdown.

2. There may be a point where you’ll have to pause and resync your timer. You’ll want it to maintain sync with the official clock. Being on-time is important in a regatta. This is easy to accomplish. When you hear the second or third prep signals, the official ones, press the lower pusher. This resets the second hand back to the beginning, or zero, synchronizing the minute hand back to the closest minute, thus syncing with the official clock.

3. At this point, the race has begun. Your personal countdown has finished and you’re off. Now you can restart your timer by pressing the top pusher to stop it and then the bottom pusher to reset it to the last programmed setting.

How to Use Your Rolex Yacht-Master II: Final Thoughts

Now you know how to use your Rolex Yacht-Master II in a regatta race. It’s a great watch that will make timing your races much easier and more accurate. Better yet, use your timer for anything you need a countdown for.

Understanding the Crown

How to set time on rolex - the crown

Before diving into the process of how to set the time on Rolex, it’s essential to understand the role and function of the crown. The crown is the small, cylindrical component located on the side of the watch case, typically at the 3 o’clock position. It serves as the primary interface for winding, setting, and adjusting your Rolex watch.

Location and Function of the Crown on a Rolex Watch

The crown is attached to the watch case through a tube known as the crown stem. This connection allows the crown to interact with the internal movement of the watch. The crown plays a vital role in several key functions:

  • Winding: In manual-wind Rolex watches, rotating the crown clockwise winds the mainspring, which powers the watch’s movement.
  • Setting: Pulling the crown out to various positions allows you to set the time, date, and other functions (depending on the model).
  • Sealing: When fully pushed in and screwed down (if applicable), the crown helps to seal the watch case, contributing to its water resistance.

Different Crown Positions and Their Purposes

Rolex watches typically feature crowns with multiple positions, each serving a specific purpose. The number of positions may vary depending on the model and complications. The most common crown positions are:

  • Position 1 (Fully Pushed In): This is the normal running position. The crown is fully seated against the case, and the watch is sealed for water resistance.
  • Position 2 (One Click Out): In this position, you can set the date (on applicable models) by rotating the crown. Some models may also allow you to adjust other functions, such as the day or GMT hand.
  • Position 3 (Fully Pulled Out): This is the position for setting the time. When the crown is fully extended, you can rotate it to move the watch hands and set the desired time.

Understanding the location, function, and different positions of the crown is crucial for accurately setting the time on your Rolex watch. In the following sections, we will explore the step-by-step process for setting the time, as well as provide tips for ensuring accuracy and maintaining your watch’s performance.

Setting the Time on a Rolex Watch

Setting the time on a rolex watch

Now that you have a clear understanding of the crown’s function and positions, let’s walk through the process of how to set time on Rolex watches. While the exact steps may vary slightly depending on the specific Rolex model you own, the general procedure remains the same.

Step 1: Unscrew the Crown (if applicable)

Many Rolex watches feature a screw-down crown, which provides an additional layer of water resistance. If your watch has a screw-down crown, you’ll need to unscrew it before you can set the time. To do this:

  • Grasp the crown firmly between your thumb and forefinger.
  • Rotate the crown counterclockwise until you feel it release from the threaded tube.
  • Continue unscrewing the crown until it pops out slightly from the case.

Step 2: Pull the crown out to the appropriate position.

With the crown unscrewed (if applicable), you can now pull it out to the appropriate position for setting the time.

  • Position 1: This is the normal running position. If your watch has stopped, you can wind it by rotating the crown clockwise until you feel resistance. This will power the watch’s movement.
  • Position 2: If your watch has a date function, this position allows you to change the date on your Rolex watch by rotating the crown. Note that you should avoid setting the date during certain hours (typically between 9 pm and 3 am) to prevent damage to the date mechanism.
  • Position 3: This is the position for setting the time. Gently pull the crown out until you feel it click into the fully extended position.

Step 3: Rotate the crown to set the time.

With the crown in position 3, you can now set the time by rotating it.

  • Clockwise rotation moves the hands forward, while counterclockwise rotation moves the hands backward.
  • Rotate the crown until the watch displays the correct time, using a reliable reference such as an atomic clock or official time website.
  • If your watch has a second hand, you may want to wait for it to reach the 12 o’clock position before setting the minute and hour hands to ensure accuracy.

Step 4: Push the crown back in and screw it down (if applicable).

Once you’ve set the correct time, carefully push the crown back into the case until you feel it click into position 1.

  • If your watch has a screw-down crown, rotate it clockwise while applying gentle pressure until you feel it engage with the threaded tube.
  • Continue screwing the crown down until it is fully seated against the case. Be careful not to overtighten, as this may damage the crown or the watch’s water resistance.

Setting the Time/Day on Vintage Rolex Watches

Vintage Rolex Day-Date - How to set the day and time

While modern Rolex watches feature a streamlined process for setting the day and date, vintage models may require a slightly different approach. If you own a vintage Rolex with a day-date complication, it’s essential to understand the unique characteristics of these older mechanisms to avoid potential damage and ensure accurate setting.

Understanding the Differences Between Vintage and Modern Rolex Day-Date Mechanisms

Vintage Rolex watches , particularly those produced before the 1980s, often utilize different day-date mechanisms compared to their modern counterparts. Some key differences include:

  • Slower date changeover: Vintage models may take longer for the date to change completely, sometimes not finishing until several hours past midnight.
  • Separate day and date settings: Some vintage watches require you to set the day and date independently, rather than having a combined quickset function.
  • Fragile date mechanisms: Older day-date complications are more delicate and prone to damage if adjusted incorrectly.

Step 1: Pull the crown out to position 2.

To set the day and date on a vintage Rolex Day-Date watch , begin by gently pulling the crown out to position 2. This is the first click or stop position, typically used for setting the date on modern models.

Step 2: Rotate the crown clockwise to set the date.

With the crown in position 2, slowly rotate it clockwise to advance the date. Continue rotating until the desired date is displayed in the watch’s date window. Be patient, as the date may change more slowly than on modern watches.

Step 3: Continue rotating the crown clockwise past midnight to change the day

To set the day on a vintage Rolex, continue rotating the crown clockwise past midnight. Each complete rotation past midnight should advance the day by one increment. Keep rotating until the correct day is displayed in the watch’s day window.

Step 4: Repeat Steps 2 and 3 Until the Correct Day and Date Are Displayed

If necessary, repeat the process of rotating the crown clockwise to set the date and day until both display the correct information. Take your time and be gentle to avoid putting excessive strain on the delicate day-date mechanism.

Step 5: Push the Crown Back in and Screw It Down (if applicable)

Once you’ve set the correct day and date, carefully push the crown back into position 1 until you feel it click into place. If your vintage Rolex has a screw-down crown, rotate it clockwise while applying gentle pressure until it is fully seated against the case.

Remember that vintage Rolex watches require extra care and attention when setting the day and date. If you’re unsure about the process or encounter resistance, it’s best to consult with a professional Rolex watchmaker to avoid causing unintended damage to your treasured timepiece.

Tips for Accurate Time Setting

Rolex Explorer 40 224270 - Set the time

While setting the time on your Rolex may seem straightforward, there are several tips and best practices to keep in mind to ensure accuracy and protect your watch’s intricate mechanisms. By following these guidelines, you can maintain your Rolex’s precision and reliability for years to come.

Synchronizing with a Reliable Time Source

To ensure your Rolex is displaying the most accurate time possible, it’s crucial to synchronize it with a reliable time reference . Some options include:

  • Atomic clocks: These highly precise clocks are available online and can provide an exact reference time.
  • GPS time signals: Many smartphones and smartwatches receive GPS time signals, which can serve as an accurate reference.
  • Official time websites: Websites like time.gov or worldtimeserver.com offer precise time information based on your location.

When setting your Rolex, aim to synchronize it as closely as possible with your chosen reference time for optimal accuracy.

Avoiding Setting the Date During Certain Hours

Rolex watches with date complications feature a delicate mechanism that advances the date display. To prevent potential damage to this mechanism, it’s best to avoid setting the date during certain hours, typically between 9 pm and 3 am. During this period, the date gears are already engaged in preparation for the automatic date change at midnight, and manually adjusting the date can cause undue stress or even breakage.

If you need to set the date and the current time falls within this cautionary window, simply advance the time past 3 am before setting the date. Once the date is set, you can then adjust the time back to the correct hour.

Importance of Fully Screwing Down the Crown

For Rolex watches with screw-down crowns, it’s essential to fully screw the crown back into position after setting the time or making any adjustments. The screw-down crown plays a vital role in maintaining the Rolex watch water resistance by creating a tight seal against the case.

When screwing the crown back in, apply gentle pressure while turning it clockwise until you feel it engage with the threaded tube. Continue screwing it down until it is fully seated against the case. Avoid overtightening, as this can damage the crown or the watch’s water resistance seals.

By keeping these tips in mind and following the proper procedures for setting the time, you can ensure your Rolex remains accurate, reliable, and protected against potential damage. In the next section, we’ll address some common challenges Rolex owners may face and how to handle them.

Addressing Common Challenges

Rolex watch - Submariner "Hulk"

Even with the best care and attention, Rolex owners may occasionally encounter challenges when setting the time or maintaining their watches. In this section, we’ll explore some common issues and provide guidance on how to address them effectively.

Dealing with a Stiff or Hard-to-Turn Crown

Over time, the crown on your Rolex may become stiff or difficult to turn. This can be due to a buildup of dirt, debris, or dried lubricant within the crown tube. If you encounter resistance when attempting to set the time or make adjustments, consider the following:

  • Clean the crown: Gently brush the base of the crown with a soft-bristled toothbrush and warm, soapy water. This can help remove any dirt or debris that may hinder its movement.
  • Apply gentle, steady pressure: When turning the crown, apply consistent, gentle pressure to avoid putting excessive strain on the delicate internal mechanisms.
  • Seek professional assistance: If the crown remains stiff or you’re uncomfortable attempting to address the issue yourself, it’s best to consult with a qualified Rolex watchmaker. They can properly diagnose the problem and take the necessary steps to restore the crown’s smooth operation.

Adjusting the Time When Traveling Across Time Zones

If you frequently travel across time zones, you may need to adjust your Rolex’s time to match your current location. To do this:

  • Pull the crown out to position 3 (fully extended) to stop the second hand.
  • Rotate the crown in the appropriate direction to move the hour hand forward or backward to the new time zone. Be mindful of AM/PM indicators if your watch features a 12-hour display.
  • Once the correct time is set, push the crown back in and screw it down (if applicable) to resume normal timekeeping.

If you own a Rolex GMT-Master or GMT-Master II or a Rolex with a dual-time zone complication, consult your watch’s user manual for specific instructions on adjusting the secondary time zone hand.

Handling a Watch That Has Stopped Running

If your Rolex has stopped running, it may simply need to be wound. For manual-wind models, rotate the crown clockwise approximately 20-30 times to fully wind the mainspring. For automatic models, gently shake the watch side-to-side for 20-30 seconds to activate the rotor and begin the winding process. If the watch still does not start, consider the following:

  • Check the power reserve: Some Rolex models feature a power reserve indicator. If the reserve is low, continue winding the watch until it reaches full capacity.
  • Let the watch sit: If you haven’t worn your automatic Rolex for an extended period, it may take some time for the lubricants to redistribute. Let the watch sit dial-up for a few hours to allow the movement to regain its optimal performance.
  • Consult a professional: If the watch continues to stop despite winding and reasonable waiting periods, it may require professional servicing. A qualified Rolex watchmaker can assess the movement and make any necessary repairs or adjustments.

By understanding how to address these common challenges, you can keep your Rolex running smoothly and accurately, even in the face of potential obstacles.

Maintenance and Care

Vintage Rolex Daytona "Paul Newman" - Caring for your watch

Proper maintenance and taking care of your Rolex are essential to ensure your watch performs optimally and maintains its value. Service your Rolex every 5-7 years, depending on the model and usage, to keep the movement clean, lubricated, and in good repair. When not in use, store your watch in a watch box or soft pouch, away from moisture and extreme temperatures. Wind manual and automatic watches periodically to keep the movement lubricated. Protect your Rolex from extreme temperatures, shocks, and magnetic fields to maintain its accuracy and avoid damage to the delicate internal components. By following these guidelines, you can extend your Rolex’s lifespan and preserve its performance and value.

“How to Use the Rolex Yacht-Master Bezel for Measuring Elapsed Time” is a detailed tutorial video created by Watch Chest that aims to guide you through the process of utilizing the Rolex Yacht-Master’s bezel to accurately measure elapsed time. The video demonstrates the precise steps one must take, ensuring you have a clear understanding of the procedure.

In the video, you will learn that to measure an elapsed period of time, you will need to rely on the hour hand, minute hand, second hand, and the bi-directional rotatable bezel. By simply rotating the bezel either to the left or right, aligning the arrow with the minute hand, you can commence timing. It is vital to note that the bezel should be somewhat tight and not easily moved, and if necessary, apply pressure while rotating. Once the event or activity you are timing concludes, you can read the number of minutes that have passed by observing the bezel. Following this, by rotating the bezel either left or right once again, you can reset the arrow to the 12 o’clock position, ready for the next timing session.

Introduction

When it comes to luxury timepieces, Rolex is a brand that stands above the rest. Known for their precision and elegance, Rolex watches are coveted by watch enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. One of the notable models in their repertoire is the Rolex Yacht-Master, which not only exudes a stylish design but also offers useful features for seafarers and water sports enthusiasts. Among its many functions, the Rolex Yacht-Master includes a bi-directional rotatable bezel that can be used to measure elapsed time. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the various steps involved in using the Yacht-Master bezel for measuring elapsed time, ensuring that you make the most of this exceptional timekeeping tool.

Aligning the Bezel with the Minute Hand

Before you can start measuring elapsed time using the Rolex Yacht-Master bezel, it is important to align the bezel with the minute hand. This ensures accurate timing and eliminates any discrepancies that may arise during the measurement process.

Understanding the Bi-Directional Rotatable Bezel

The Yacht-Master bezel is designed to be bi-directional, meaning it can be rotated in either direction. This feature allows for flexible timing, catering to both clockwise and counterclockwise measurements. The bezel is adorned with markings, typically engraved or painted, that represent minutes or other relevant time intervals.

Rotating the Bezel Left or Right

To align the Yacht-Master bezel with the minute hand, you need to rotate it either left or right. The direction of rotation depends on whether you want to measure elapsed time in a clockwise or counterclockwise fashion. Care should be taken while rotating the bezel to avoid any forceful or abrupt movements, as this may cause damage to both the bezel and the watch itself.

Aligning the Arrow with the Minute Hand

As you rotate the Yacht-Master bezel, you will notice an arrow or triangle-shaped marker located at the top or 12 o’clock position. Your goal is to align this arrow with the minute hand once the desired elapsed time is reached. This alignment ensures that both the bezel and the minute hand are synchronized, enabling you to accurately read the elapsed time on the bezel.

Ensuring the Bezel is Firm

After aligning the arrow with the minute hand, it is crucial to ensure that the bezel is firm and securely in place. A loose or improperly seated bezel may result in inaccurate timing or accidental movement during your activities. Gently press down on the bezel to ensure it is firmly locked, allowing for precise measurements without any unwanted rotations.

Starting the Timing

With the bezel properly aligned and secured, you are now ready to start measuring elapsed time using your Rolex Yacht-Master. This section explores the necessary steps to begin timing accurately.

Setting the Bezel in Motion

To initiate the timing process, simply rotate the bezel in the direction required for your specific measurement. Whether you are timing an activity lasting a few minutes or measuring longer intervals, the bi-directional feature of the Yacht-Master bezel makes it flexible and versatile for various timing needs. Rotate the bezel smoothly and steadily, avoiding sudden or jerky movements.

Using the Hour, Minute, and Second Hands

While the bezel serves as the primary tool for measuring elapsed time, it is essential to pay attention to the hour, minute, and second hands on your Rolex Yacht-Master. These hands work in conjunction with the bezel, providing a comprehensive indication of the exact time at any given moment. Keeping a close eye on all three hands ensures accurate timing and allows for precise readings when determining the elapsed time using the bezel markings.

Ensuring Proper Functioning of the Watch

Before embarking on any timing activities, it is wise to ensure that your Rolex Yacht-Master is functioning properly. Regularly check the accuracy of your watch by referring to a reliable time source, such as an atomic clock or a trusted timekeeping device. If you notice any significant deviations, it may be necessary to have your timepiece serviced by a qualified professional. A properly calibrated watch ensures precise measurements and reliable elapsed time calculations.

How to Use the Rolex Yacht-Master Bezel for Measuring Elapsed Time

Reading the Elapsed Time

Once the timing process begins, accurately reading the elapsed time on your Rolex Yacht-Master bezel is essential. This section provides insight into interpreting the bezel markings for determining elapsed time effectively.

Understanding the Bezel Markings

The bezel on the Rolex Yacht-Master is meticulously crafted with markings that correspond to minutes or other relevant time intervals. These markings can take various forms, such as Arabic numerals, engraved dots, or lines, depending on the specific model. Familiarize yourself with the bezel markings on your Yacht-Master to ensure a clear understanding of their significance when reading elapsed time.

Interpreting the Minutes Past on the Bezel

As the timing process progresses, the minute hand on your Rolex Yacht-Master will move along with the passing minutes. To determine the elapsed time, observe the position of the minute hand in relation to the bezel markings. The minute hand will align with a specific marking, indicating the precise number of minutes that have elapsed since the timing began.

Determining the Elapsed Time

By carefully examining the position of the minute hand and its alignment with the bezel markings, you can accurately determine the elapsed time. For example, if the minute hand aligns with the marking indicating 15 minutes, you can conclude that 15 minutes have passed since the start of the timing. Utilize this information to track your activities, maintain punctuality, or monitor performance during sporting events, among other practical applications.

How to Use the Rolex Yacht-Master Bezel for Measuring Elapsed Time

Resetting the Bezel

Resetting the bezel after completing the timing process is essential to maintain the accuracy and functionality of your Rolex Yacht-Master. This section explores the steps involved in resetting the bezel to its original position.

Returning the Arrow to the 12 o’clock Position

To reset the Yacht-Master bezel, gently rotate it in either direction until the arrow or marker at the top aligns with the 12 o’clock position. This step ensures that the bezel is ready for the next timing session, providing a clean slate for precise measurements without any influence from the previous timing activity.

Ensuring Accuracy for Future Timing

After resetting the bezel, take a moment to verify that it is firmly locked and secure. Performing a quick check confirms that the bezel is functioning correctly and eliminates any potential errors or discrepancies that could affect future timing activities. A properly reset and secured bezel guarantees the accuracy and reliability of your Rolex Yacht-Master while measuring elapsed time.

Maintenance Tips for the Rotatable Bezel

To ensure the longevity and proper functioning of your Rolex Yacht-Master bezel, it is essential to maintain it appropriately. Avoid exposing the watch to extreme temperatures, as this may cause damage to the bezel and affect its rotation mechanism. Additionally, clean the bezel regularly using a soft, lint-free cloth to remove any dirt or residue that may hinder smooth rotation. By following these maintenance tips, you can enjoy the full potential of your Rolex Yacht-Master and its versatile rotatable bezel for measuring elapsed time.

In conclusion, the Rolex Yacht-Master bezel offers a valuable tool for measuring elapsed time in a variety of activities. By understanding and following the steps outlined in this comprehensive guide, you can make the most of this exceptional feature. From aligning the bezel with the minute hand to accurately reading the elapsed time, each stage contributes to the precision and functionality of your Rolex Yacht-Master. Remember to reset the bezel after each timing session and maintain it properly to ensure consistent performance. With your newly acquired knowledge, you can confidently utilize the Rolex Yacht-Master bezel for measuring elapsed time and enhance your timekeeping experience.

A Rolex lasts a lifetime

Caring for your Rolex

At Rolex we want to ensure that your watch performs as well throughout your life as on the day you bought it. All that is needed is to give your Rolex just the smallest bit of care.

Wearing the watch for the first time

Before being worn for the first time, or if it has stopped, a Rolex watch must be wound manually in order to function correctly and precisely. To wind the watch manually, unscrew the winding crown completely, then turn it several times clockwise (turning in the other direction has no effect). A minimum of 25 turns is required for adequate partial winding. Carefully screw the crown back down against the case to ensure waterproofness. The watch will then be wound automatically as long as it is worn on the wrist.

Manually winding your watch

When you wear your Rolex daily, you don’t need to wind it. If you take it off and set it aside, the watch will retain its “charge” for two days or more, depending on the model. However, if you haven’t worn your Rolex for more than a couple of days and the watch has stopped, we recommend that you manually wind it when you set the time before putting it on.

Setting the time and date

Rolex watches can be set by unscrewing the crown and pulling it out to the second notch. The seconds hand is stopped, allowing you to set the time. Each model has its own detailed user guide and functions that may vary. Please download the appropriate guide.

Day-to-day care

Thanks to Rolex expertise, your watch will require very little day-to-day care. You can help preserve its lustre by cleaning it occasionally with a microfibre cloth. You can also wash the case and bracelet from time to time using soapy water and a soft brush. Before cleaning your watch, always ensure that the winding crown is screwed down properly against the case to guarantee waterproofness.

Water is the natural element for a Rolex with a metal bracelet, including the salt-water of the sea and ocean. All Rolex wristwatches are waterproof to depths of at least 100 metres for Oyster Perpetual models, and 50 metres for the Perpetual 1908 models. All you have to do after diving or a day at the beach is simply to rinse your watch with fresh water to remove any salt and sand deposits: wearing your watch while showering at the end of the day should do the trick.

The Oyster case of your Rolex protects it from water and makes it completely dustproof and waterproof. To maintain the watch’s waterproofness, the Oyster case needs to be properly sealed. The crown of your Rolex screws down tightly to create a hermetic seal like the hatch of a submarine. When you reset the time or the date or wind the watch manually, it is extremely important to ensure that you have screwed down the crown until it can’t turn any further.

You can play sports with a Rolex on your wrist as the Rolex Oyster case provides the watch movement with optimal protection against shocks.

At Rolex, we prize the accuracy of our watches and perform the most stringent tests on each and every one of them to ensure their precision in real-life usage.

Powered by you

A Rolex watch is a marvel of mechanical engineering. The “heart” of a Rolex, its movement, is powered by you: as you move your wrist throughout your day, the Perpetual rotor inside the watch gently swings, transferring energy to the mainspring of the watch, providing a constant and stable power source that regulates the timepiece.

Tuned to you

Your Rolex’s “heart” will be influenced by your unique lifestyle; if at any moment you want to optimize the performance of your watch, your Official Rolex Jeweler will gladly test its accuracy and, if needed, finely regulate the balance wheel to make sure that your Rolex is uniquely tuned to you.

A watch that lasts a lifetime

At Rolex, we strive to build you a watch that lasts a lifetime and that can resist everyday shocks, temperatures, depths and even more – to adapt to all lifestyles. This meticulous method of making watches means the only thing you have to do is service your watch when the time comes.

Editors' Picks Our Rolex Predictions For Watches & Wonders 2024

Last year we got one (nearly) right. Can we do it again?

how to set time rolex yachtmaster

As if we were on the same wavelength, Rolex teased its upcoming novelties in a short video on their various social media platforms. As always, it's nearly impossible to decipher much from it, but in that video we saw what looks to be changes to bracelets, perhaps a new Sky-Dweller or a solid gold Datejust. There appeared to be a GMT-Master II in there as well as some interesting dial work and a curious yellow gold sports model with a caseback that had us scratching our heads (is it an exhibition style or a different metal?).

In any event, this just goes to show you what power Rolex wields when it comes to watch enthusiasts trying to figure out what they will and won't do year in and year out. We certainly fall into that bucket and make it a yearly tradition to get clairvoyant with the Crown's novelties. Last year we (okay, I) basically correctly foresaw the gold GMT and I'll never let anyone forget it. This year our choices run the gamut from "obvious" to full-on funky. We made our Tudor picks yesterday, and now without further ado, here are our predictions for Rolex mere days ahead of Watches & Wonders 2024. Like we said yesterday, let us know what predictions you have in the comments and tell which of ours you like best!

Rolex

Last year's emoji Day-Date and celebration dial OP mean we all have carte blanche for anything our hearts desire in this round-up. I got swept up in the try-and-be-as-weird-as-possible approach and dreamt up some goofy colorful enamel heart-shaped gem-set novelties. My colleague TanTan brought me back down to earth with a more reasonable (but still enough of a fantasy to appease me) idea. How about a new take on "beach" Daytona dials. Why not remake  pastel beachy colors and put them into OP cases? On bracelets. Obviously.

I say these 2024 beach dials should be close to the original concept and made of stone, TanTan wants pastel colored lacquer dials, but this is my "prediction" and so I am making executive decisions. We are going OG turquoise, yellow mother of pearl, pink mother of pearl, green chrysoprase/chalcedony. Okay, so the chances of this happening are slim but they are not impossible. And so if we are buying into this fantasy, let's just go all the way "beach," and make these in white gold.

This would be "new" for Rolex, no stone dial OP watches have been made. The modern OP is a relatively new Rolex model and was seemingly created to exist as a more moderately priced option, entry level we could say. But there is precedent to my prediction! Some of the rarest vintage stone dials are found in Datejusts, which was a similarly low-market model compared to the Day-Date at the time.

Rolex

Since Rolex surprised us with the Le Mans Daytona, the iconic chronograph has been back on my mind. I've always sort of dismissed the modern Daytona as a watch for other people. I don't know who they are, but they weren't me. Then the Le Mans changed everything. I'll never forget that release and how it exceeded expectations in person in every way. So I started looking at Daytonas again. But there's a problem. The best Daytona possible doesn't exist. Yet.

After getting to compare the Le Mans to the white gold Daytona on Oysterflex, I realized that if you could only choose between strap and bracelet on a daily basis (without owning both) you really could have one of the most versatile watches on the market.  Make it in stainless steel and you've got a nearly perfect daily wear watch. But because of the design of the end links for the Oysterflex, you can't mix and match. While I'm not confident enough to predict this is what Rolex will do, it's what I'm crossing my fingers for.

Imagine a white-dialed Rolex Daytona with all the new bells and whistles, the metal rim on the ceramic bezel, and maybe a bonus display caseback. Now add an updated quick-release oyster bracelet and an option to buy a quick-release Oysterflex as well. I'm getting excited just thinking about it. Walking around town, the heft and visual appeal of the stainless steel Oyster bracelet would scratch the itch of wearing a Daytona the way it was born to be. But if I were heading to the country club (which I'd be a member of if I owned a Daytona) to hit some balls, I'd pop my new favorite watch on an Oysterflex so it's more comfortable on my sweaty wrist as I lounge in the clubhouse afterward. What a dream.

Rolex

I am certainly not the first one to propose a watch like this. I have seen renders of it on the internet lately though I am a bit confused that a lot of folks I know are proposing a Red Submariner no-date. Historically, that wasn't a thing and so I don't think it will become a thing. But I digress – my prediction is far more specifically a Red Submariner Date which harkens back to the original Sub Date ref. 1680 from the late '60s which lasted only a handful of years.

My thought here is that the Red Sea-Dweller may be no more this year, and that watch always felt like a split the baby approach: give the people what they want by way of a "red" diver but give it to them in such a large package that most won't ever spring for it (or have the wrist to support it). I think that the "Starbucks" Submariner can exists on its own as the "white text" Submariner and we bring a some special energy back to the classic Submariner Date with the red text. Of course I am biased towards this watch given by well documented obsession with the OG Red Sub and its connection to Robert Redford. Let's just say if a watch like this were to come out this year, I may have no choice but to try to grab one... Of course, don't hold me to that.

Rolex

You already gave us two-tone , Rolex, so why not go all the way? To be clear, nothing in Rolex's past suggests it'd ever do this, which is exactly why I want it. At 36mm, the Explorer is my favorite modern sports watch in the Rolex catalog – I'm glad it's come back to the One True Size for the Explorer, as seen in the 1016 most other references, even as Rolex also added a 40mm Explorer back to the collection.

We've had gold Subs and GMTs for years, but never a full gold Explorer. It feels like it's about time. Danny begged for the same back in 2022, and now I'm adding my name to the chorus. There's just something so undeniably perfect – unnecessary, ridiculous, ostentatious, and perfect – about a gold sports watch with a black dial and no date at a size that pretty much anyone could wear.

Rolex

The use of stone dials in the Rolex catalog has been largely relegated to the bygone era of the 70s (though many were still produced throughout the 80s and 90s), and even at that time, they were moreso available upon request than stocked with dealers. However, at last year's Watches & Wonder's lineup, Rolex did release a new Carnelian Dial Day-Date , among others, though this rendition might have played second fiddle to the much more talked about “Emoji” release.

Given the prevailing movement of green dial watch releases, I think it is much more fun and not-so-unreasonable to imagine that there could be a world in which Rolex could put its own signature on this trend by returning to the groovy malachite stone. Of course, the Day-Date would make the perfect canvas for this sort of thing, and, there's no other way to go than to pair that rich color with a funky yellow gold case and bracelet. I'm manifesting a disco-era Rolex revival ASAP. I don't think I'm alone in this either.

Rolex

Okay, so while I don't actually believe that we will see Rolex release this watch any time soon, I do think that a titanium Milgauss makes a lot of sense.

First, the steel version has been discontinued. Second, titanium is having a moment – both broadly in the sports watch segment but also within the Rolex context (see: RLX Yacht-Master and the Deepsea Challenge). Third – and most specific to the Milgauss hypothesis – is that titanium is an excellent metal for use around magnetic fields as it is not magnetic. This is what makes it great for biomedical implants, as titanium has a crystalline structure without unpaired electrons.

Those of you who know your Rolex history will note that the Milgauss was created in the late '50s as a watch for scientists and others who work in environments with strong magnetic fields. Heck, the name "Milgauss" is a reference to 1000 gauss, which was the level of magnetism that the original model was designed to resist.

With this in mind, wouldn't an RLX Milgauss be both nicely aligned with the history and impetus of the entire Milgauss concept and incredibly cool? Yes. Fingers crossed, but don't get your hopes up.

Rolex Teases Its 2024 Watch Lineup: New GMTs, Mix-and-Match Bracelets & More

What models will Rolex release at Watches and Wonders 2024? A new teaser from the brand offers our best clues to date.

rolex rose gold bracelet

By Johnny Brayson

As is tradition, Rolex has released its annual cryptic teaser video ahead of Watches and Wonders , and you know what that means: it’s time for wild speculation!

I still don’t know exactly what models Rolex is hiding up its sleeve, as the teaser is purposefully deceptive and every shot seems to point in multiple directions.

But here is what I know for sure: Rolex’s slogan, “When the Iconic Meets the Unexpected,” suggests the brand will be mixing and matching some of its hallmarks — bracelet styles , certain material configurations, etc.

Take a look at the full video from Rolex below, then check out my breakdown of what I think we’re actually seeing. What did I miss?

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ROLEX (@rolex)

New GMT-Masters!

rolex jubilee bracelet

In the weeks leading up to Watches & Wonders, the most prevalent Rolex rumor suggests that we’ll be getting a GMT-Master II with a red and black “Coke” bezel. This stems from the recent reveal that the brand filed a patent for a black-and-red Cerachrom bezel back in 2022, suggesting that a Coke is in the works.

There are no glimpses of a Coke bezel in the teaser, but there are hints at a new precious metal GMT-Master II in the form of an Oysterflex bracelet with the part number 350501 visible. That’s Rolex’s code for the Oysterflex used on 40mm models, currently limited to the Daytona and Sky-Dweller. The GMT-Master II is also 40mm, which suggests it could finally be getting an Oysterflex option.

rolex watch clasp on rubber strap

Oysterflex has thus far been limited to models in precious metal, and I don’t see that changing. That suggests the new GMT-Master II will be in white gold or platinum, judging from what we’ve seen from these images. And since Rolex’s first iteration of the Pepsi Cerachrom bezel was exclusively in white gold, I’m guessing the brand is going the same route here for the Coke.

But there’s another shot that suggests a new stainless steel GMT-Master II is coming, as well. This teaser shows a Jubilee bracelet and the edge of a rotating bezel. The bracelet looks too dull to be made of precious metal. I wouldn’t expect anything crazy like a Coke here. But a Jubilee Black and Gray GMT? I could see it.

An Everose Gold, Gem-Set Sky-Dweller on a Jubilee

closeup of rolex diamond bezel

Another suggestion that Rolex is playing around more with its bracelets comes from a couple of shots of something in Everose Gold. One shot shows a diamond-set, fluted-style bezel, but the diamonds are baguettes rather than the round diamonds we see on Datejust or Day-Date bezels.

This suggests it could be a gem-set Sky-Dweller, which fits the bill as a precious metal watch that’s sporty enough to pull off such a bezel. However, the crystal in the rendered image is extremely pronounced and doesn’t resemble any current Rolex offering, so I’m not sure what’s going on there.

Following the diamond bezel, there’s a shot of an Everose Gold watch on a Jubilee bracelet (see the lead image of this article). The bracelet here is fitted with a Glidelock clasp, so that rules out a Datejust. It could be an Everose Gold GMT-Master II, but I’m thinking the diamond-set Sky-Dweller is getting an appropriately dressy bracelet in the form of a Jubilee.

An Oscar-Worthy Day-Date or Another Everose Sky-Dweller

Day-date or sky-dweller.

3 original photos

how to set time rolex yachtmaster

The video teaser begins with a shot of an Everose Gold President bracelet, followed by an Everose Gold fluted bezel over a charcoal dial and a Cyclops-adorned crystal. This seems most likely to be the Everose Gold Day-Date that Rolex quietly teased at the Oscars but has not yet announced.

But it could also be a misdirect. The slogan “When the Iconic Meets the Unexpected” suggests something more interesting, like an Everose Gold Sky-Dweller on a President bracelet.

Since this watch appears to both open and close the video (it shows up on a woman’s wrist at the end), this watch would appear to be Rolex’s marquee release, and a President-equipped Sky-Dweller fits that bill far better than a new color dial for the Day-Date.

A Guilloché-Dial 1908 in Platinum

closeup of blue rolex dial

The elongated minute hand and Arabic index of the 1908 dress watch are pretty unmistakable in this closeup, which shows a Guilloché-esque dial in ice blue. Is it real Guilloché? Possibly, but it’s more likely stamped or laser-engraved given the scale at which Rolex produces watches.

The ice-blue color has previously been seen on a platinum Day-Date and Daytona, and it looks like the 1908 will be getting the platinum treatment in this version, too.

A Yellow Gold … Something

One or two watches.

2 original photos

how to set time rolex yachtmaster

Lastly, this watch has me stumped. We clearly see a yellow gold watch on an Oyster bracelet but the caseback is decidedly not yellow gold. It looks dark gray, suggesting a titanium caseback, which would make little sense. Perhaps it’s an out-of-focus (or simply not rendered) display caseback.

Another shot of what seems to be the same watch shows a side profile of the yellow gold case showing off a fluted bezel and a Cyclops, and the bulbous caseback suggests it could be a display caseback. Could this mean we’re getting a display caseback on a Day-Date? It certainly looks that way, but the Oyster bracelet is throwing me for a loop.

It could also be that we’re looking at two different yellow gold watches — maybe a yellow gold Submariner or Sea-Dweller with a titanium caseback to keep the weight down, along with the aforementioned display-back Day-Date? We’ll get our answers on April 9 at Watches and Wonders Geneva.
