Our Kayak Rack is designed to be mounted on the existing stanchions of your sailboat. They are designed to be of a height to fit between the lifelines, and also rotate inside and outside the lifelines. SUP and Kayak Carrying Systems for Boaters

  • By Jim Hendricks
  • Updated: May 16, 2017

sailboat kayak holder

You need look no further than the local lake, bay or harbor to confirm the popularity of stand-up paddleboards and kayaks . In fact, on some days, human-powered craft are so numerous, they can pose a navigation challenge to traditional boaters.

But everyone has a right to enjoy the water in whichever way they desire, right? Why not do both? Maybe you want to raft up at the sandbar next weekend and break out the SUP to mingle with the crowd. Or you might cruise to a secluded bay, get out your board and enjoy some solitude. There are also some remote wilderness no-motor zones in the Florida Everglades and elsewhere that restrict entry to paddlecraft only. You can anchor outside and then paddle in. Really adventurous boaters take their paddlecraft to the Bahamas to fish the flats where bonefish and permit feed in mere inches of water.

That all sounds great, but carrying boards and ’yaks on a mothership can be a hassle. Where do you stow them? How do you secure them? If you decide to tie them to the bow or stuff them in the cockpit, eventually they’re going to get in the way. You can stack them on the swim platform, but many SUPs and kayaks are longer than the width of some boat transoms. The Bote Flood board, for instance, is 12 feet long. The Hobie Revolution 16 kayak is, well, 16 feet long. You also lose access to the swim platform when it’s packed with your toys.

It’s no longer awkward or cumbersome to bring paddlecraft aboard your boat thanks to creative ways to get into the board game. A number of systems let you easily and quickly stow and deploy SUPs and kayaks, as well as surfboards and kiteboards, from virtually any kind of boat. Here are six easy solutions.

SUP and Kayak Carrying Systems for Boaters

In the Hole

Stowing SUPs and kayaks along the gunwales preserves onboard mobility. But how do you secure these craft on the gunwale? Why not use racks designed to fit in the gunwale rod holders? One company that has capitalized on this is Manta Racks, based in Ocklawaha, Florida.

Manta focuses on the center console market with SUP and kayak racks equipped with gimbaled posts that fit into the holes of the gunwale rod holders. “The rod holders are already on the boat, so why not use them for racks to hold boards?” asks Tim Wilhelm, owner of Manta Racks.

This not only gets the boards out of the way, but also does so without the need to drill holes or install any special mounts on the boat, Wilhelm points out.

A patented 360-degree locking swivel base allows boaters to angle each arm of the rack on a horizontal plane to suit the boat and board. Bases are available for both 15- and 30-degree rod-holder tubes. Manta Racks are constructed from quarter-inch aluminum, then powder-coated to resist corrosion. All hardware is stainless steel. SeaDek foam on the inside of the arms cushions boards, and built-in cords secure the board or ’yak.

Manta’s S1 rack ($499.99, mantaracks.com ) will transport one board, while the S2 rack ($799.99, mantaracks.com ) will hold up to two SUPs. The LTK ($599.99) will stow one kayak or one of the bigger new SUPs such as the Dragonfly 13’6″ or the Live Watersports L2 board.

The Outracker system ($419.99, storeyourboard.com ) also fits into gunwale rod holders, but it is restricted to tubes with 30-degree angles. However, the two padded aluminum arms pivot and lock in a horizontal plane to fit different SUPs.

The Outracker will accommodate up to two boards. The post that drops in the rod tube extends upward to serve as a rod holder, so you can still stow rods or troll for fish while also carrying boards or kayaks.

These systems can also be used with rod holders that extend across the transom of a boat, as well as along each side. At the 2017 Miami International Boat Show, we saw a new Mako 414 CC with a Manta LTK rack across the stern of the big center console fishing boat.

Most boaters won’t buy a new boat just to have dedicated stowage for boards (as described on page 90), though it’s a great feature to consider if you’re in the market. But if your current boat has a high-profile bow rail that extends aft to about midship, you can get a rack that lets you easily stow and deploy your SUPs and kayaks.

Magma Products, best known for its line of marine barbecues, offers the Removable Kayak/SUP Rack ($229.98, magmaproducts.com ), which includes two arms that clamp to vertical or diagonal bow-rail stanchions ranging from 7/8 to 11/2 inches in diameter. Constructed from polished stainless steel with UV-resistant padding to protect your paddlecraft while cradled in the 1-inch-diameter arms, each rack will hold two SUPs or one kayak. Tie-down points on each arm let you secure boards and ‘yaks with straps.

Magma’s exclusive quick-release knob system allows each arm to be instantly removed or rotated inward when not in use, or swung in tighter to the bow rail to fit smaller/narrower kayaks or boards.

The SurfStow Suprax ($249.99, storeyourboat.com ) is another example of a system that clamps to a bow rail. Constructed from aluminum, the rack arms will hold one SUP and have EVA foam linings to protect your board. A built-in bungee cord secures the board. The universal clamp system swivels to attach to virtually any vertical or horizontal rail ranging from 7/8 to 11/4 inches in diameter. There’s also an add-on accessory arm that increases the capacity to a pair of SUPs ($99, westmarine.com ).

SurfStow also offers the Yakrax ($299.99, overtons.com ) rack for kayaks. It uses the same clamp system as the Suprax, but the padded aluminum arms accept the hull depth of a kayak.

Blow-Up SUPs

Cruisers have been using blow-up boats — aka inflatable boats — as tenders for years. That lesson seems to have taken hold when it comes to the makers of SUPs.

The ability to inflate and deflate a board translates to greater portability. It also means you might be able to carry a much larger board than your small boat could otherwise accept, even with a rack.

Take, for example, the Zeppelin ($1,599, boteboard.com ). This big, stable 12-foot-4-inch inflatable SUP from Bote is more than 3 feet wide and can carry two adults. Yet when drained of air, it folds down into a 45-pound backpack that can stow in a cabin, fish locker or lazarette. The Zeppelin comes with a pump and a removable skeg.

Another big blow-up paddleboard is the Body Glove Performer 11 ISUP ($899.99,  bodyglove.com ). It folds into a backpack that weighs just 24 pounds for easy onboard stowage. At 11 feet long and 34 inches wide, the ISUP is stable and glides easily through the water. It features three rubberized fins, a three-piece aluminum paddle and a manual pump. Check out our review at boatingmag.com/body-glove-isup .

Other inflatable SUPs include the 10-foot Starboard Astro Whopper Zen ($999, coloradokayak.com ), 10-foot Red Paddle ($999, airkayaks.com ), and the 14-foot Naish Glide ($1,552.50, californiakiteboarding.com ).

To make the inflation process less strenuous, consider a portable electric air pump such as the West Marine 12-volt inflater ($14.77, westmarine.com ).

SUP and Kayak Carrying Systems for Boaters

The popularity of SUPs has grown so much that Sea Ray’s new, uniquely designed SLX 400 (aka the Entertainer) features a dedicated locker with an upward-opening hatch for these paddlecraft.

This “garage” lets you keep boards on the boat all the time so you don’t have to drag them up and down the dock when you want to take them on a cruise. And they never get in the way because they’re tucked in their own board room.

Accessible from the aft swim platform of the SLX 400, the locker holds two SUPs that easily slide out and onto the platform, and then quickly slide back in.

SUP and Kayak Carrying Systems for Boaters

The proliferation of hardtops aboard today’s boats has a benefit besides shade and shelter. Hardtops create new surfaces for attaching accessories such as racks for SUPs and kayaks, akin to roof racks on automobiles.

At Largo, Florida-based Intrepid Powerboats, for example, models such as the 400 Cuddy are often built with custom-ordered hardtop racks for SUPs and surfboards, says Joe Brenna, vice president of customer service. “Racks are installed as part of the build, as per the buyer’s specifications,” Brenna says.

It’s one thing to customize a boat to carry boards, it’s quite another to offer a model designed for SUPs and kayaks. Yet that’s what the Tiara Q44 is all about. Tiara calls it the Adventure Yacht. The Q44 is available with a hardtop toy-storage system that lets owners secure boards and kayaks on a top-mounted rack. The hardtop was designed to prevent marine accessories such as VHF antennas from interfering with board stowage. The walkaround layout of the Q44 facilitates loading and unloading paddlecraft from the rack.

SUP and Kayak Carrying Systems for Boaters

Many pontoon boat owners love to take their toys with them, including SUPs and kayaks. What better way to enjoy a summer day on the water than to anchor up in a quiet cove and get in some paddle time? Or maybe you want anchor out and explore or fish a remote creek that’s too narrow or shallow for your pontoon boat.

While big pontoon models offer lots of space to carry boards, why not clear the deck and the seats with racks designed to fit the square railings of the panels that surround the interior? Enter the Toon Racker ($369.99, storeyourboard.com ).

A pair of J-shaped arms fit the railings of most pontoon boats, and each rack will accommodate one kayak or two SUPs. Integral padding offers plenty of protection from scratching or chafing, and built-in bungee cords keep boards and ’yaks secure while underway.

You can also get the SurfStow Suprax ($254.99, discountramps.com ), which features a pair of padded aluminum arms with specialized clamps to conform to square railings. SurfStow also offers the Yakrax kayak rack ($230.35, walmart.com ) for pontoons.

SUP and Kayak Carrying Systems for Boaters

The popularity of paddleboarding is skyrocketing, says Tim Wilhelm, owner of Manta Racks, which offers stowage systems for SUPs. “My business has doubled in the last year,” he points out as evidence of the trend.

Unfortunately, this rising tide has also led to an increase in incidents involving paddlecraft. While recreational boating accidents and fatalities steadily declined from 2012 to 2015, last year saw a spike in fatalities, says Capt. F. Thomas Boross, chief director of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

“During July and August 2016, the United States had the highest number of fatalities in five years, most of which were attributed to paddlecraft accidents,” Boross said in a speech to auxiliary members in St. Louis, Missouri, in January.

With this in mind, the Coast Guard has expanded its Vessel Safety Check (VSC) program to include canoes, kayaks and SUPs, says Harry Jacobs, 37-year member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and an approved vessel examiner and immediate past national director of public affairs for the auxiliary. Jacobs currently serves with the District II Public Affairs Detachment in Southern California.

“We need to bring paddlecraft enthusiasts into the boater-education community,” Jacobs says. Examiners are now conducting VSCs for paddlecraft and issuing decals for canoes, kayaks and SUPs meeting requirements that include a sound-making device, life jacket, white navigation light, visual distress signals and more.

The Ultimate Guide to Kayak Storage for Docks & Boats

Kayaking and Stand-Up Paddleboarding are great fun and great exercise, but properly storing your gear takes a bit of effort and know-how to maintain the longevity of your equipment. Whether you're interested in dock storage, boat storage, or both, Magma has everything you need to ensure your kayak or SUP remains in perfect condition.

Let’s talk about the do’s and don’ts of kayak storage and which Magma SUP/Kayak Storage Rack System suits you best.

Do’s and Don’ts of Kayak Storage

  • Clean and dry your gear before storing it on the boat to prevent mold and mildew from developing. Rinse your gear with clean water and use a mild detergent if necessary. After cleaning, let it dry completely before storing it. If you store a wet kayak or paddleboard, mold and mildew can develop, which can damage your equipment.
  • Choose the storage option that best suits your needs. When it comes to storing kayaks and paddleboards, there are plenty of options to choose from. If you've got a small dock with limited storage space, over the water racks could be the perfect choice for keeping your gear secure without taking up too much room. For larger docks, upright racks that stand alone on deck can work, too. And if you're looking for an option specifically designed for use on boats, then consider investing in some boat-mounted racks . These mount onto boat railings and provide great security during transport.
  • Invest in high-quality storage equipment. The better the quality of your storage equipment, the more secure your gear will be. Magma Products offers an impressive catalog of racks that are designed specifically for storing your equipment on a boat or on the dock. They provide maximum protection and accessibility, so you can enjoy your time on the water without worrying about your gear.
  • Consider the weight distribution of your kayak or paddleboard. Proper weight distribution is crucial when storing kayaks and paddleboards on a boat. Make sure to distribute the weight of your equipment evenly on the boat to prevent any potential damage or instability during transport. If you have multiple kayaks or paddleboards, it’s best to distribute the weight equally between the sides of the boat to maintain balance.
  • Don't store a wet kayak or paddleboard on the boat -- this is a one-way ticket to creating an environment where mold and mildew thrive.
  • Don't store your kayak or SUP on the ground or in the water for extended periods. This may be a no-brainer, but it's crucial to choose storage equipment that is designed for kayaks and paddleboards and made for dock or boat storage. Extended storage on the ground or in water can cause damage to your equipment.
  • Don't overload one side of the boat with too much weight, as this can cause it to become unstable in transit.

Sailing With Kayaks: A How-To Guide

  • By Jan Irons
  • Updated: December 20, 2012

sailboat kayak holder

Kayaking is one of America’s fastest growing sports, and judging from the increasing number of kayaks aboard cruising boats, more and more sailors are discovering the joys of a paddle in paradise. Once you start sailing with kayaks, you’ll discover that there’s nothing quite like effortlessly gliding through crystal-clear water while silently exploring places you could never reach in a dinghy. Dolphins splash, sea turtles slip past, and flying fish provide endless entertainment as the kayak drifts by. Beaching your kayak on an uninhabited sandy beach with wavelets lapping the shoreline is pure magic and really enhances the cruising experience.

Kayaks provide different things for different people. For me, it’s the peace I feel dipping my paddle in the water and anticipating new adventures around the next bend. Others love the exhilaration of surfing down waves; still others use their kayaks as platforms for fishing and diving.

Whatever the rationale, from the inquiries we get from fellow cruisers asking to buy our kayaks, others clearly wish they’d brought these functional boats along with them. If you’re considering sailing with kayaks, here are a few tips.

In style and materials, the choice is yours: decked or sit-on-top models; inflatable or folding ones; boats made of plastic, fiberglass, or even carbon fiber. When we began shopping for our kayaks, we at first considered inflatable models. When we tested them, however, though we acknowledged that they’d stow better, in our opinion they just didn’t paddle well. Since then, several companies have introduced inflatable kayaks made of Hypalon; they’re very rigid and comfortable, with inflatable keels and even rudders, making them a much more attractive option on a cruising boat, where space is at a premium.

Materials aside, different kayaks are suited for different activities. If you’re serious about surfing or fishing, for instance, consider a kayak specially made for those activities. If you’re like me and just want a good all-around kayak, a more generic version will be fine. Your best resource will be a high-quality kayak store that carries multiple types and brands. There you’ll be able to explore the differences in boats and styles and decide what is best for you.

Kayak Considerations

Length, width, and hull shape affect speed, maneuverability, and stability. Short, wide kayaks are more stable and easier to board from a moving boat. But a shorter kayak won’t track as straight as a longer, narrower version. Long, thin kayaks slice through the water quicker and easier but are more difficult to turn. Short, beamy kayaks promote stability and turn easier but require a bit more effort to maintain momentum.

Most recreational plastic kayaks aren’t equipped with rudders, which can be useful in strong current and wind, allowing you to paddle evenly while your foot pedals control the rudder to adjust your course. We don’t have rudders on our 9-foot Wilderness Systems Riot kayaks, and we haven’t missed them.

Plastic kayaks, the most durable, are also the heaviest. (That said, don’t be overly concerned with weight; our 9-footers weigh about 40 pounds but are easily hoisted aboard.) They’re also the least expensive, so you won’t feel as guilty if they get scratched or dinged. Fiberglass, inflatable, or carbon-fiber kayaks are more susceptible to nicks when dragged over rocky shorelines, but if you’re spending lots of time paddling, their lightness will be much appreciated.

In our opinion, sit-on-top kayaks have a few advantages over sit-in kayaks, especially for cruisers. The former have open decks and, because they’re easier to board and use and less confining, many paddlers feel they’re more comfortable. There’s also no risk of being stuck inside if the kayak tips. Beginning paddlers especially enjoy sit-on-top models, which are even cozier with an optional seat. Of course, decked kayaks are drier, especially if you wear a cockpit spray skirt when paddling.

Some cruisers enjoy tandem, two-person boats, which are fun for couples to paddle. The downside is that such kayaks don’t perform well with just one person on board. And while there are a dizzying array of paddles and accessories available, only two are necessities. The first, of course, is the paddle. Ours break down into two pieces for easier storage. Make sure you get the right size: Beamy kayaks require paddles that are long enough to clear the sides, as there’s nothing more annoying than banging the edges with every stroke. A rule of thumb when assessing a paddle is to hold it on top of your head. Bend your elbows 90 degrees and grasp the paddle on both ends overhead. Ideally, there should be a 4- to 6-inch gap between your hands and the blade. Because our kayaks are beamy, I actually have a 6- to 7-inch gap. A good kayak store can assist you with sizing.

For us, the other critical accessory is a comfortable seat, and we recommend purchasing the best that you can afford. Try a few different ones to decide which is right for you.

When purchasing a kayak test several different models. Some stores have demo models for this purpose. We tested four different types—a pair of sit-ins, a sit-on-top model, and an inflatable—before we made our decision. If you can’t find a store that provides “test rides,” ask if you can rent the type of boat that you’re considering beforehand. Or take a kayak excursion trip with a company that has kayaks similar to what you’re interested in purchasing.

Storing Kayaks

sailboat kayak holder

Unfortunately, kayaks are out of the water more than in, so you need to think about launching and retrieving and onboard storage. When it comes to stowage, there are several options. We carry our two aforementioned 9-footers on Winterlude , our Passport 37. They nestle nicely in stainless-steel cradles affixed to the forward lifeline stanchions; the “swinging” cradles allow mounting inside or outside the lifelines. When at anchor in a blow, to reduce windage we take the boats out of the cradles and lash them to the handrails on the cabin top.

Because our side decks are narrow and we carry our dinghy on the foredeck, when under way, we usually stow the kayaks outside the lifelines. Yes, we realize that they could be swept off by a wicked wave, but after 10 years and almost 10,000 nautical miles, it hasn’t happened yet. Other sailors lash their kayaks to the cabin top, secure them above the bimini hardtop, or even make them fast to their dinghy davits. It really depends on the characteristics and layout of your particular boat.

Whichever way you go, you won’t regret bringing along kayaks on your cruise. From exercise to exploring, they can’t be beat.

Kayak Safety Paddle with a buddy boat whenever possible. If there’s no one available and you want to paddle, make sure someone knows where you’re going and when you expect to be back. Carry along a handheld waterproof VHF radio.

Practice getting in and out of your kayak. Try different entry points from your boat until you discover the one that’s easiest for you. We used to slide into the kayaks from our dinghy until we discovered it’s almost as easy to step down from our wide rubrail directly into the kayak when it’s secured to the boat on a long painter. I steady it for a moment, then lower myself into place. I leave the paddle on the deck of our boat but within reach until I’m lowered in and can grab it.

Once aboard, sit quietly in the kayak and let the current or wind take you to determine if there are significant amounts of one or the other and which way it’s pushing you. Always paddle upcurrent or upwind first as a test to determine how difficult it might be to get back. Last winter, in the Little Shark River in Everglades National Park, the current was fierce, but I really wanted to go for a late-afternoon paddle. I tested conditions three different times until I felt comfortable that I could get back upcurrent to the boat.

Wear or have a life jacket within easy reach in case you need it. If you’re new to paddling, you should probably always wear your life jacket until you gain confidence getting in and out of the boat.

Before it actually happens, practice falling out of the boat. Paddle to a calm beach and deliberately capsize. See if you can get back in. Then do it again in water just over your head. I can get back in my kayak from deep water by placing the paddle at a 90-degree angle to the kayak and using it to help pull myself in. Depending on your boat and on your skill levels, everyone will have a different technique, so learn yours.

Always take water shoes or flip-flops : You never know when you might want to hop out and pull the kayak ashore for a look around, perhaps on a rough shoreline. We actually think Crocs are ideal; they float, aren’t smelly, and don’t cost an arm and a leg should we lose one overboard.

Looking for “sunscreen” for your kayak? Try a product called 303 Aerospace Protectant . We reapply it at least every six months and sometimes in between. Canvas covers also work well, but we’ve had good results with the less expensive 303. As with all cruising equipment, a good freshwater rinse from time to time is beneficial.

Always store seats, life jackets, paddles, and extra stuff inside the boat when not in use for extended periods. Having said that, we do leave our seats and life jackets on the kayaks while we’re cruising six months a year because it’s easy not to use them if it’s too much trouble to get them ready.

Handles and webbing won’t last forever in the tropical sun, so be sure to have replacements; we’ve replaced ours twice in six years. The 303 Protectant will slow but not stop the deterioration.

“The DockSider” Kayak Lift and Storage Rack is designed for Kayak boarding either by water or by dock.

Waterside Model (WS) – Water Entry If your water is shallow and you enter your kayak from the water, the water entry rack & lift is right for you. Dockside Model (DS) – Dock Entry If your water is deep and you enter your kayak from your dock, the dock entry rack & lift is right for you.

Our Dock Mounts:

Due to being in a Marine environment; This Kayak Lift and Dock Storage Rack is made Architectural Marine Aluminum and Stainless Steel.

Because “The DockSider” Kayak Dock Rack is designed with the “user” in mind it has numerous customer features

It’s Convenient! Your Dockside Kayak Rack is right where you need thus promoting more frequent usage. Saves wear on tear on you and your Kayak as you don’t have to lug it to and fro! As a kayak dock launch, the DockSider is easy to get out and put away.

Save Valuable Dock / Pier space! Clear your Dock while your Kayak Storage Rack holds your kayak on the side of your Dock / Pier. This kayak cradle for your dock is ideal for keeping your kayak secure while not in use.

It’s easy!! 3 Easy Steps – just “Load, Lift and Store”. Easy because you Rotate the Kayak Cradle handle downward, Float your Kayak in and center to load, and lift your Kayak to store. Some say “Launch, Load, and Store”!

Lift with a Fraction of the weight! Due to the unique leverage and patented Dock Rack design, using the Dock Craft kayak boat lift, the user lifts their Kayak directly from the water. The higher you lift, the force required lessens due to the design. As a result, The lift starts at approximately 60% of the weight in the loading position. An 80lb kayak feels like 48lb. Also, in the storage position, the user does not need to exert any force. The Kayak will stay in it storage position by itself.  There are latches you turn to keep the Dock Rack in the storage position in the event of high winds and inclement weather.

Minimize Rain Entry! Due to lifting your Kayak in the Kayak Storage Rack, your kayak rolls over with the cockpit angled downward. As a result Customers write “After a downpour, the inside of my kayak was not even wet!”

It Adjustable! Does your water level change from Spring to Fall? Due to the slot and pin design the user can easily adjust this Dock Storage Rack to accommodate water levels of 10 – 36 inches from the Dock Decking surface!

Your choice of Mounts! All “DockSider” Kayak Lift and Storage Rack models offer four mounting options (Bolt On and Clamp On Universal Mounts, and ShoreMaster, and Beach King Dock Specific Mounts.  For use on Wood, Composite Wood, Aluminum, and Vinyl Decking.   See details under Mounting Types .

We have categorized the various questions into major themes.

  • Adjustments
  • Dock related questions
  • DockCraft Models
  • Salt Water / Tides
  • Types of Watercraft

Adjustments:

How far down into the water can this rack go?

The Docksider dock rack has 4 mounting positions with the pin and slot design:

  • – 5 inches below the dock decking clevis pin in the lower position on the cradle and seated in the upper slot of the mounting bracket.
  • – 9 inches below the dock decking clevis pin in the lower position on the cradle and seated in the lower slot of the mounting bracket.
  • – 13 inches below the dock decking clevis pin in the upper position on the cradle and seated in the upper slot of the mounting bracket.
  • – 17 inches below the dock decking clevis pin in the upper position on the cradle and seated in the lower slot of the mounting bracket.

Note:  These dimensions relate to the distance below the dock decking where the bottom / side of your watercraft is stored.  Typically, the water level where your watercraft is floating can be up to 20 inches below these dimensions.

What is the minimum distance from the waterline and the top of the deck for mounting these racks?

“We are going to build an extension off our existing boat dock which is closer to the water, say 4 to 5″ above the water level, to make it easier to get in and out of the kayaks, and are wondering if the kayak racks can be mounted this close to the water.”

From your question, it sounds as if you will be boarding your kayak from your dock.

The simple answer is No, Our Dockside Dock Lift and Storage Rack will not function properly with the 4 to 5-inch distance you desire.  Both the Dockside and Waterside model needs to be set at its minimum freeboard of 10-inch distance from the dock decking to the water level.

However, if you built a platform or used 6 in spacers under the mounts on this extension, then you would meet the minimum freeboard requirement for the DockSider Dock Lift & Rack and also have your desired height for boarding.

Can this unit lower the kayak 5 feet down?

No, it cannot.

Both the Waterside and Dockside models have a maximum Dock Decking to water distance (freeboard) of 36 inches.

In applications similar to what you have described; several customers have built a simple platform on the side of their dock anywhere from 2 feet to 30inches above the water to mount a Waterside Model Lift and Dock Storage Rack.

I would like to know more about the freeboard distance between water and dock.

The maximum freeboard for both the Waterside and Dockside models is 36 inches.

There are four positions which the DockSider Dock Lift and Storage Rack can be adjusted.

The storage positions are:

  • 5 inches below the decking; to accommodate a water level 10 to 24 inches below the dock decking.
  • 9 inches below the decking; to accommodate a water level 14 to 28 inches below the dock decking.
  • 13 inches below the decking; to accommodate a water level 18 to 32 inches below the dock decking.
  • 17 inches below the decking; to accommodate a water level 22 to 36 inches below the dock decking.

Can the upright arms be shorter to accommodate a narrow slip?

“The distance between my boat and the dock is about 3 feet.”

The best response I can provide is probably.

To provide a more definitive answer, I would need to know the make and model of your kayak.

More specifically – the length, beam, height, and weight of your kayak.

I assume you are looking for the Dockside Model, to board your Kayak from the dock.

Clearly, this would be a Special Order; which we would accommodate with reasonable pricing.

Would your rack be suitable for a dock that was up to 5’ off the water?

“The water level goes down quite a bit by end of summer.”

In applications similar to what you have described; several customers have built a simple platform on the side of their dock anywhere from 2 feet to 30 inches above the water to mount a Waterside Model Lift and Dock Storage Rack.

When you say the water goes down quite a bit by the end of the summer, this can be accounted for by readjusting the Rack to a lower position.  This is easily done with the pin and slot design of the mounting.  On my installation, the water drops 15 inches from spring to summer.  I do not have to readjust the initial setting of the dock height.

Dock Related Questions

Our dock is for a lake and has no overhang. It is an Endres manufacturing wooden dock.

“Which mount would work with our type of dock for the kayak dock storage?”

Either the bolt-on or clamp-on style of mounts should be fine for your dock. One consideration might be that if you choose the clamp-on mount, you will have the freedom to move the unit from one location to a different location on your dock. Once you install the bolt-on, the mounts are in that fixed position, unless you choose to drill holes and remount your rack in a different location.

I am not sure if I have a Truss Dock.

A Truss Dock is typically made using an aluminum or steel frame. The dock planks sit on top of a that metal frame system.

The sides of a Truss dock have two metal square beams or tubes running parallel to the water and about 9 to 10 inches apart. Diagonal metal tubes are then connected to the top and bottom beams.  The side view of the structure looks like a series of X’s or W’s running between the top and bottom beams.

If you click the following link, then go to page 2 at the bottom, there is a picture of a Truss style dock.

https://dockcraft.com/assets/Clamp-on-Mount-Dock-Configurations-Guide.pdf

I have a floating Metalcraft dock. Has Aluminum decking and support beam along the edge.

How can I secure a dockside rack to my dock?

The Bolt On Mount is the best option for this type of dock.

Typically, the float spacing on a Floating Dock does not allow the under-dock support of the Clamp On mount to fit between the floats.

A Floating dock is constructed with a frame that is secured to the floats and the decking secure to the frame.  The frame height will accommodate bolting the mounting system to the dock decking without contacting the floats.  Given you have metal decking, you need to add additional support as the metal decking material thickness is thin.  In the Bolt On Mount Dock Configuration Guide:

https://dockcraft.com/assets/Bolt-on-Mount-Dock-Configurations-Guide.pdf

on the last 2 pages it shows the supports you would need to add.

As this is a floating dock, you may need to add the supports on the top surface of the decking given you may not have access to the underside of the decking.

We have a poly floating dock. Will this work?

As there are many poly-docks on the market and each manufacturer has their own accessory mounting systems; we do not have enough information to provide an accurate response.

If you would like to email us at [email protected] ,       or      Call us at    585-734-7374

Locking Systems

Does the Dock Rack Lock?

The DockSider Kayak | SUP Lift & Dock Storage Rack does not have a built-in lock.

However, there are several on the market available to you.

As we are in the process of adding Locking products to our website, give us a call (585-734-7374) or email us ( [email protected] ) and we would gladly give you our recommendation.

DockSider Models

What is the difference between the dockside storage mount version and the waterside storage mount version?

“Both products list for the same price. Both of the above versions appear to be aluminum, and there appears to be another that is stainless steel. All 3 appear to support 100 lbs. What is your recommendation and why aluminum vs. stainless steel?”

The Dockside Model is designed:

  • for those users that board their Kayak / Paddle Board directly from their dock because the water is deep, mucky or have a rocky bottom.
  • with a Tether Strap to rotate your kayak / SUP into the storage position while you are on the Dock.
  • Both models have rotating latches to hold your kayak or paddle board in the storage position during inclement / windy weather. However, with the Dockside model, these latches must be rotated to keep your kayak or paddle board secured in the storage position.
  • such that your kayak or paddle board is closer to the dock for ease in maneuvering your kayak or paddle board into and out of the loading position while you are on the dock.

The Waterside Model is designed:

  • For those users that board their Kayak / Paddle Board while they are standing in the water. Their water is shallow – usually mid-thigh or less.
  • with the greatest leverage assist ratio, you are lifting approximately 60% of the weight of your watercraft at the start of the lift.
  • With either the Dockside or the Waterside model, the weight you are lifting lessens as your watercraft is approaching the storage position.
  • When in the storage position, your kayak is stable and will not rotate back toward the water. The latches do not need to be engaged.
  • It is highly recommended that in windy or inclement weather these latches be engaged to maintain the stability of the watercraft.

The Stainless-Steel model only comes in the Dockside Bolt on Model. It is great for Floating Docks in a Salt Water Harbor environment.

You asked for our recommendation on why aluminum vs. Stainless Steel:

Aluminum models are great for fresh water applications; whereas Stainless Steel is best for brine or salt water applications.

It must be noted that:

  • Stainless Steel will rust under certain conditions. However, it does take much more time for this to happen. ” Don’t use disinfectants, abrasives, or cleaners that contain bleach, alcohol, ammonia, or chlorides, all of which can harm stainless.
  • I’ve found Bartenders Friend (available at Grocery Stores, Home Improvement stores, Walmart, Target, and the like) very good at removing rust from Stainless Steel.
  • Aluminum is the 3 rd best material for use in a salt water Marine environment. This is after Stainless Steel and Red Metals (Brass, Copper, and Bronze).
  • The choice of using an aluminum rack in a salt water environment boils down to cost of the Rack vs. Maintenance. A Stainless-Steel Rack is more costly, whereas the Aluminum Rack needs to be washed with fresh water much more frequently.

Do you make a rack that can be used to house both a kayak and a SUP?

The DockSider Lift and Dock Storage Rack will work fine for both Kayaks and SUP’s.  Indeed, they are the same rack. We list them separately for the customer looking for one or the other independently.

The rack will hold only one kayak, and some customers have stored two SUP’s at a time (one on top of the other and upside down).

Will this work on canoe’s as well?

“I have an Old Town 15′ that weighs about 75lbs      “

We have a specific product for Canoes. Click the link below to see the product.

https://dockcraft.com/product/canoe-dock-lift-storage-rack/

Do you have one product that allows to secure both a kayak and Paddle Board?

“I’d rather not have to buy 2. One that fits 2 is ideal.”

No, we do not.  The current design of the DockSider Dock Storage Rack will hold one Kayak or Paddle Board.  Some customers have placed 1 SUP on top of the other and then loaded and stored 2 Paddle Board in our rack.  We know of one customer that has stored their kayak in our Lift and Dock Storage system; then placed their SUP on the dock and leaned it against the rack and bungeed it to the rack for storage.

We believe that storing 2 watercraft in a lifting system would at  best clumsy and perhaps difficult creating safety issues for the user.

If I buy the dockside design can you still enter it from the water?

There is no reason why you could not load / launch and store your watercraft with the Dockside unit and then float your watercraft to a “shallow” location for boarding.

We do not recommend loading, launching, or storing your watercraft in the Dockside unit while you are in the water for safety reasons.  The dockside unit will rotate back into the water if you “lose control” or do not latch the latches.  If for some reason you may stub your toe or trip on an underwater obstacle, you may incur personal injury if the watercraft does rotate back toward you.

Dock Mounts

Which mount is stronger / more secure; the Bolt On or Clamp On Mount? We must say that the Bolt on Mount is probably more secure; However, both mounts are more than adequate to do the job. We like to compare it to killing a mosquito with a fly swatter or a sledge hammer – they both are effective!

To bolt this on to my dock, do I need to get under the dock?

The DockSider Lift and Dock Storage Rack has two different mounting options.

For the bolt option, it comes with Snaptogglers; if you use these to mount the rack, you Do Not need to access the underside of your dock to secure them in place. However, if there are structural members under the decking in a mounting location, you could get a lag bolt from a hardware/home improvement store and use those instead.

For the clamp mount, you definitely need to have access underneath your dock.

Can I mount this to a concrete sea wall?

We have had customers mount our Lift and Dock Storage system to a concrete sea wall (also railroad tie break walls), with success. You would need to choose the Bolt On Mount for this application and use concrete anchors. The top of the concrete wall should be roughly level, not sloped to any great degree.

How far apart are the vertical upright pieces of the rack?

The mounting position for the Dockside unit is 32 inches apart and

The mounting position for the Waterside unit is 26 ½ inches apart.

For the bolt-on mount, how many inches does the plate extend onto the pier?

The bolt-on mount extends over the dock 6 inches. The mounting locations are 2 ¼” and 5” in from the edge of the dock.

Saltwater & Tides

Will this work if I live in a tidal area?

  • This unit will not accommodate tides greater than 20 inches.
  • Yes, this unit can be adjusted for different water heights, however, doing this throughout the day to accommodate the tide height would seem to be unrealistic.
  • This unit is designed for customers that have floating docks in saltwater harbors, typically with 15 inches of freeboard to the water.
  • If you live on fresh water and have a smaller floating dock; the weight of the watercraft hanging on the side of the dock may cause the dock to be higher on one side than the other. Please call us at 585-734-7374 or email us at [email protected] for further details.

Will this work in saltwater?

  • We offer a Stainless-Steel version of our product; specifically, for those customers in a saltwater environment. The Aluminum version of our product will also work fine; with the exception that it requires more maintenance.
  • The choice of using an aluminum rack in a salt water environment boils down to Cost of the Rack vs. Maintenance. A Stainless-Steel Rack is more costly, whereas the Aluminum Rack needs to be washed with fresh water much more frequently to minimize any corrosion build up.

Is this dock rack good for a tidal river?

  • If you live on a tidal river (the water is a Brine) and have a smaller floating dock; the weight of the watercraft hanging on the side of the dock may cause the dock to be higher on one side than the other. Please call us at 585-734-7374 or email us at [email protected] for further details.
  • We offer a Stainless-Steel version of our product; specifically, for those customers in a saltwater environment.
  • The Aluminum version of our product will also work fine; with the exception that it requires more maintenance.

Watercraft:

I just purchased the predator which has an electric motor. Will this dock rack be adequate?

  • I believe you are referring to the Old Town Predator PDL kayak.
  • The Specs on this Sit on Top are: 13 ft long, width of 36 inches, and weight of 117 lbs. (with the pedal drive).
  • First things first – the width of 36 inches is 2 inches beyond the specs we have published on our system. This may work fine; however, we believe it is marginal.  We could also provide handle extensions, at a nominal cost, that would definitely accommodate the Predator’s width.
  • I would also recommend removing the motor and the peddle drive prior to loading your predator into the Docksider Lift and Dock Storage Rack. This would definitely improve the weight and balance of this kayak.
  • Please give us a call (585-734-7374) or email us at [email protected] to discuss this further.

Will this work for a Hobie mirage oasis, width 34″?

Yes, we have many customers with a Hobie Oasis using this dock rack! For an Oasis, as with all Hobies with the Mirage drive, we recommend that the Mirage drive be removed prior to loading the Hobie in the rack — the Mirage drive is very easily removable. This will prevent the rowing fins from engaging in the lifting straps.

What do you suggest for heavier Kayaks. I have a Hobie PA 12 which is listed at 129 lbs?

The Pro Angler 12 is rated at 129lbs. at a fully rigged weight.

Fully rigged weight includes:

  • the Fitted Hull Weight (105 #s), plus all other standard features that are removable, e.g. (Mirage Drive, seat, paddles, gear bucket, cassette plug, Pro Anglers (removable liner), Islands (sail, amas – outrigger, akas brace, dagger board), Inflatables (travel bag, pump, repair kit).
  • With just the fitted weight and the seat, I believe to weight would be about 108 lbs. This weight would be fine for our standard product.

I have a Hobie Mirage Oasis….if we remove the peddle drives is this the best durable product for us ?

Ease of storage and launch is important.

We have many satisfied customers with a Hobie Oasis using our dock rack! For an Oasis, as with all Hobies with the Mirage drive, we recommend that the Mirage drive be removed prior to loading the Hobie in the rack — the Mirage drive is very easily removable. This will prevent the rowing fins from engaging in the lifting straps. So, we find it works well, you should be fine and find this a durable solution for storing and launching your kayak, and easy to use.

I have a 9 ft dingy with a 3 horse power motor on it, Do you have any ideas to get it out of the water every night?

I liked this lift, but I think my boat is too big.

You have posed a very difficult question, to answer properly – I would need much more information.

  • I would definitely recommend that you remove the motor prior to loading your dingy, not only for weight but also for balance.
  • The length would not be an issue.
  • The width, I suspect is significant over the specified 34 inches. This could possibly be resolved with handle extensions, but I would need to understand the width / beam of your dingy prior to making any recommendation.
  • The height of the dingy off the water, I would also suspect to be a potential concern. If the gunnels of the dingy are higher than the dock decking surface (when floating next to the dock), then our Lift and Dock Storage Rack would probably not be an option.

Feel free to call us at 585-734-7374 or email us at info@dockcraft .com to discuss this application further.

My kayak is 35” wide, and this rack is recommended for 34”. Can it still work for my kayak?

There is a good possibility that a 35-inch-wide kayak would work fine.

With the kayak sitting at an angle in the rack, the 35 in wide kayak should be fine.

Why do we spec the rack at 34 inches?  The height of the rack and handle is 34 inches.  Looking at geometries and how the kayak actually sits in the rack actually allows this greater width kayak.

Is it possible to hang a double place kayak on these?

By a double space kayak, I assume you are referring to a Tandem Kayak.

We have many customers with Tandem kayaks using “The DockSider”.

Just assure that you kayak meets our specifications.

Is there any limitation on maximum length of kayak this system will accommodate?

Will it support a 14.5’ kayak?

We have customers that have up to 18-foot kayaks in our Lift and Dock Storage Rack.

Some customer with Kayaks greater than 16 feet do bungee the bow and stern to the dock for stability in very windy conditions.

Some customers do not.

It is really a personal preference; it certainly will not hurt anything if you do.

SUP and Kayak Carrying Systems for Boaters

About Manta Rack Systems

To solve the problem of boards taking up valuable space and causing damage, we developed a patented rack system that uses pre-existing fishing rod holders, securely storing boards on the boat's gunnel without drilling holes. Now all of your boards are out of the way of your passengers, securely fastened to a rack system.

“Most boaters won’t buy a new boat just to have dedicated stowage for boards, though it’s a great feature to consider if you’re in the market.” _Tim Barker/Manta Racks

Six ways to bring a SUP or kayak aboard your boat

Look no further than the local lake, bay, or harbor to confirm the popularity of stand-up paddle boards and kayaks. In fact, on some days, human-powered craft are so numerous they can pose a navigation challenge to traditional boaters.

But everyone has a right to enjoy the water in whichever way they desire, right? Why not do both? Maybe you want to raft up at the sandbar next weekend and break out the SUP to mingle with the crowd. Or you might cruise to a secluded bay, get out your board, and enjoy some solitude. There are also some remote wilderness no-motor zones in the Florida Everglades and elsewhere that restrict entry to paddlecraft only. You can anchor outside and then paddle in. Really adventurous boaters take their paddle craft to the Bahamas to fish the flats where bonefish and permit feed in mere inches of water.

That all sounds great, but carrying boards and ‘yaks on a mothership can be a hassle. Where do you stow them? How do you secure them? If you tie them to the bow or stuff them in the cockpit they’ll get in the way.

It’s no longer awkward or cumbersome to bring paddle craft aboard your boat thanks to creative ways to get into the board game. Some systems let you easily and quickly stow and deploy SUPs and kayaks, as well as surfboards and kiteboards, from virtually any boat.

Here are six easy solutions:

In the Hole: Kayak Rack For Boat Fishing Rod Holders

Stowing SUPs and kayaks along the gunwales preserves onboard mobility and helps you organize kayaks. But how do you safely store these craft on the gunwale? Why not use racks designed to fit in the gunwale rod holders? One company that has capitalized on this is Manta Racks, based in Ocklawaha, Florida.

Manta focuses on the center console market with  SUP and kayak racks  equipped with gimbaled posts that fit into the holes of the gunwale rod holders. “The rod holders are already on the boat, so why not use them for racks to hold boards?” asks Tim Wilhelm, owner of Manta Racks.

That gets the boards out of the way without drilling holes or installing special mounts on the boat, Wilhelm points out.

There’s SeaDek foam on the inside of the arm cushion boards, and built-in cords secure the board or ‘yak.

Manta’s S1 rack ($499.99, mantaracks.com) will transport one board, while the S2 rack ($799.99, mantaracks.com) will hold up to two SUPs. The L2K ($599.99) will  transport one kayak  or one of the bigger new SUPs such as the Dragonfly 13’6″ or the Live Watersports L2 board.

The Outracker system ($419.99, storeyourboard.com) also fits into gunwale rod holders, but it is restricted to tubes with 30-degree angles.

You can use these systems with the  rod holders  that extend across the transom of your boat, as well as along each side. At the 2017 Miami International Boat Show, we saw a new Mako 414 CC with a Manta LTK rack across the stern of the big center console fishing boat.

SUP and Kayak Carrying Systems for Boaters _Tim Barker/Manta Racks

Most boaters won’t buy a new boat just to have dedicated stowage for boards (as described on page 90), though it’s a great feature to consider if you’re in the market. But if your current boat has a high-profile bow rail that extends aft to about midship, you can get a rack that lets you easily stow and deploy your SUPs and kayaks.

Magma Products, best known for its line of marine barbecues, offers the Removable Kayak/SUP Rack ($229.98, magmaproducts.com), which includes two arms that clamp to vertical or diagonal bow-rail stanchions ranging from 7/8 to 11/2 inches in diameter.

The SurfStow Suprax ($249.99, storeyourboat.com) is another example of a system that clamps to a bow rail. There’s also an add-on accessory arm that increases the capacity to a pair of SUPs ($99, westmarine.com).

SurfStow also offers the Yakrax ($299.99, overtons.com) rack for kayaks.

Take, for example, the Zeppelin ($1,599, boteboard.com).

Another big blow-up paddleboard is the Body Glove Performer 11 ISUP ($899.99, bodyglove.com). It folds into a backpack that weighs just 24 pounds for easy onboard stowage. At 11 feet long and 34 inches wide, the ISUP is stable and glides easily through the water. It features three rubberized fins, a three-piece aluminum paddle and a manual pump. Check out our review at boatingmag.com/body-glove-isup.

Other inflatable SUPs include the 10-foot Starboard Astro Whopper Zen ($999, coloradokayak.com), 10-foot Red Paddle ($999, airkayaks.com), and the 14-foot Naish Glide ($1,552.50, californiakiteboarding.com).

To make the inflation process less strenuous, consider a portable electric air pump such as the West Marine 12-volt inflater ($14.77, westmarine.com).

It’s one thing to customize a boat to carry boards, it’s quite another to offer a model designed for SUPs and kayaks.” _Tim Barker/Tiara Yachts

Enter the Toon Racker ($369.99, storeyourboard.com).

A pair of J-shaped arms fit the railings of most pontoon boats, and each rack will accommodate one kayak or two SUPs. Integral padding offers plenty of protection from scratching or chafing, and built-in bungee cords keep boards and ‘yaks secure while underway.

You can also get the SurfStow Suprax ($254.99, discountramps.com), which features a pair of padded aluminum arms with specialized clamps to conform to square railings. SurfStow also offers the Yakrax boat kayak rack ($230.35, walmart.com) for pontoons.

3 Best Cup Holders for Inflatable Kayaks

cup holder for inflatable kayak

If you’re planning to spend a lot of time in your kayak, you’re probably going to want something to hold your drinks. And while there are plenty of cup holders available for rigid kayaks, what about inflatable kayaks?

With inflatable kayaks, you can’t simply drill holes in the kayak’s sides to mount your cup holder. Instead, you may want to add a mount or, more likely, buy a completely different kind of cup holder.

In this article, we’ll talk about some top cup holders on the market that you can use with your inflatable kayak. We’ll also discuss how to mount your new cup holder on your kayak.

1. Accmor Universal Cup Holder

2. squidcup sqoozie non-tipping boat can holder, 3. votprof spill-proof drink holder, how do you attach a cup holder to an inflatable kayak, best cup holders for inflatable kayaks: reviewed .

  • Multifunctional cup holder could be used for stroller, wheelchair, walker, bike, scooter, armrest, trolleys, pushchair, lawnmowers, ATV, treadmill, golf cart ,shopping cart, kayak, boat handlebar,...
  • The cup holder organizer compatible with different bottles, whose diameter less than 85mm / 3.4 in. It fits for baby bottles, water bottles, coffee mug, drink bottles, beverage cups etc.

This cup holder was created specifically for use with strollers, but the great thing about it is that it’s universal–it can be used for a variety of applications.

The cup holder has an adjustable clamp that firmly grips whatever you clamp it onto–no sliding around or risk of spilling.

For use with your inflatable kayak, you could simply slide a dowel through the D-rings on your stern and clamp the cup holder onto the dowel.

Alternatively, if your inflatable kayak has rails on it, you can clamp the cup holder onto one of the rails.

The cup holder itself can hold several different sizes of cups and bottles, as long as they are smaller than 3.4 inches in diameter. The inside of the cage is designed with springs to firmly hold your cup in place, further preventing the risk of spills.

Another great feature of this cup holder is that you can clamp it on anywhere and adjust the angle of the cage. This gives you flexibility in where and how you mount the cup holder.

This cup holder is tough and durable, which is absolutely essential when you’re out riding the rapids in your kayak.

Some users have noted that it isn’t large enough to hold a coffee mug, so keep this in mind when purchasing.

What we like:

  • The cup holder is tough enough to handle rough conditions on the water.
  • It is easy to mount–simply clamp it onto a rail or dowel.
  • It can be adjusted to a variety of angles.

What we don’t like:

  • The cup holder doesn’t work well for coffee mugs.
  • NON-TIP: Features the SquidCup patented dual-magnet + micro suction cup technology that is simple, easy to use and totally maintenance free. SquidCup technology won't randomly fail like those...
  • PREMIUM PRODUCT: Commercial grade, soft silicone rubber construction with a built-in powerful magnet securely encased in both the bottom of the can holder and base. Lightweight, easy to store unlike...

This is a different kind of cup holder–for starters, it is made specifically for holding standard 12-ounce cans. You may also find that it will work for smaller or thinner cans, bottles, and some other types of cups as well, though for best results you’ll want to use it with regular cans.

This holder is composed of a silicone holder and matching silicone base. Strong magnets in the holder and base help to keep your drink in place, and 20 suction cups on the bottom of the base secure it to any hard, smooth surface.

So, if you have a rigid floor in your inflatable kayak, a small platform or mount, or a way of attaching a platform or mount to your rails, this may be the perfect holder for you.

The magnets and suction cups work together to keep your drink upright even in rough waters and windy conditions. This cup holder is often used with other types of boats and even stand-up paddleboards, so you know it can take a lot of abuse.

Some users have even suctioned it to the inflatable floors of their kayaks with moderate success, so it may work for you even if you don’t have rails or a hard, flat surface for mounting.

SquidCup is so confident in this product that they offer a 30-day money-back guarantee and a 1-year warranty.

  • 5 Best Carts & Wheels For Inflatable Kayaks
  • 3 Best GoPro Mounts For Inflatable Kayaks

Many users have reported that the magnets are almost too strong, as they will often pull the suctioned base up with the holder.

  • This unique holder requires no hardware for mounting.
  • It will hold your drink upright even in choppy waters and rough weather conditions.
  • It comes with a money-back guarantee and a warranty.
  • The strong magnets sometimes pull up the base with the rest of the holder.
  • PREMIUM and ECO-FRIENDLY: This drink holder for pool is crafted using top quality food grade silicone material which is soft, nontoxic, non-deforming, odorless, and strong for ultimate support,...
  • FUN POOL ACCESSORY FOR YOUR DRINKS: This pool cup holder keeps your favorite drinks (hot or cold) within easy reach, easy to put and remove your cups, mugs, glasses, and bottles! Great gift for anyone...

This cup holder is technically designed for gripping the sides of an inflatable jacuzzi or above-ground pool, but it will work just as well for an inflatable kayak provided you aren’t braving tough rapids or wild waves.

Made of food-grade silicone, it is strong, flexible, and made for gripping. The sides of the holder simply wrap around the inflated pool or kayak chamber, and the weighted middle and edges of the holder helps to make it more stable.

The middle of the holder is also made of silicone and designed to conform to many different bottles, cups, and can sizes–up to 4 inches in diameter.

Again, this product is designed for pools and hot tubs, but it will work for any inflatable tube that’s 4 inches across or more–including that of an inflatable kayak.

A word of caution, though–the only thing that holds this holder in place is the weight of the silicone at the middle and the edges, as well as the gripping nature of silicone. If you take it out in poor weather conditions or choppy waters, it will most likely slide over the edge, and you’ll lose both the holder and your drink.

So, if you plan to purchase this cup holder, only use it when the weather is clear and the waters are calm.

  • This cup holder is easy to add to your kayak–simply drape the sides over your inflatable chamber.
  • It is weighted in the middle and edges to make it more stable.
  • It will hold many different sizes and styles of cup, can, and bottle.
  • It doesn’t grip very strongly, so it shouldn’t be used in choppy waters.

As you can see, we reviewed three very different cup holders in the above sections. Depending on the type of cup holder you buy, the process for attaching it to your kayak may be slightly different.

Your best bet is to follow the instructions included with your cup holder.

Obviously, in many cases, mounting the cup holder won’t be as straightforward as it would be with a rigid kayak. You can’t buy just any regular cup holder and expect to screw it into your kayak’s inflatable material.

If you buy a regular kayak cup holder, you may have to build a DIY mount for your kayak, something similar to what is shown in this video:

DIY $2 Motor mount for inflatable & rigid kayaks

If you buy one of the cup holders reviewed in this article, follow these basic steps:

  • Decide where to mount your cup holder: If you buy the Accmor cup holder, you will need something to clamp it onto–a rail already built into your kayak, or a dowel you secure through the D-rings, most likely on your stern. If you go with the SquidCup or the Votprof, you may have a bit more flexibility in where you choose to place the cup holder. You want to pick a spot that is convenient but also out of the way so you’re not knocking it over every time you move or change position.
  • Make a mount if necessary: For the Accmor, your mount may be as simple as a dowel through the D-rings. If you have rails and would like to make a hard, flat mount for the SquidCup, you could do so by cutting a piece of plywood or stiff plastic and securing it to the rail with clamps. This is optional, of course, as you can always try simply placing the SquidCup on your kayak floor. If you go with the Vatprof, you won’t need a mount of any kind.
  • Secure the cup holder: Follow the instructions included with your cup holder for how to secure it to your boat. With the Accmor, clamp it onto your dowel or rail in the desired spot. With the SquidCup, place the suction-cup base onto your mount or kayak floor, pressing down firmly to create a strong bond. For the Vatprof, simply drape it over the side of the kayak.
  • Test it out: Head out onto calm waters to test out your cup holder in a controlled environment. With the Accmor and the SquidCup, if it holds securely in calm waters, you can begin testing it out on choppier waters. With the Vatprof, it’s best to stick to calm waters so it doesn’t slide off the kayak.

Any of the cup holders discussed in this review will work great for an inflatable kayak.

Give the Accmor universal cup holder    a try if you have rails that you can attach it to or are willing to create a simple DIY mount.

Check out the SquidCup can holder    if you mostly use canned drinks on the water and want a stable, no-tip product you can trust.

Or, if you prefer to stick to calm waters and want an easy, mount-free installation, the Votprof drink holder     might be just what you’re looking for.

Whichever product you choose, have a great time on the water and stay safe out there!
