X-Yacht’s X40: Best Performance Cruiser

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: December 8, 2020

With this year’s aforementioned diminished nominee list, it was impossible to break down the fleet across the board to fit each boat into a neat, tidy category. One of the two notable exceptions was the Performance Cruiser class, with three strong entries: the Arcona 435, the Beneteau Oceanis 40.1 and the X-Yachts X40. We’ll get to the Arcona and the Beneteau in the pages to come, but for 2021, the clear winner in this class of sweet-sailing racer/cruisers was the X40. It clearly met the criteria for being the top performer in its stated design brief: a boat that will compete strongly—and well—on the racecourse, yet be comfortable and fun for coastal cruising.

With the X-Yachts, we’ve seen this figurative movie before. The Danish brand has taken home BOTY hardware four times in the past five years.

Murphy, our resident boatbuilding whisperer—he’s worked closely with the American Boat and Yacht Council writing textbooks and creating curricula—was emphatic when it came to the quality of the X40′s construction: “X-Yachts has built 5,000 boats since they went into business in 1979. So they have a good, long track record. They’re probably best known in performance circles, so when we board an X-Yacht, we expect the boat is going to sail pretty well, which this one certainly did. As far the build quality, this is one of the top two yachts in this year’s fleet (the other is the HH 50 cat, which we’ll get to). It’s an epoxy hull, which is the best resin you can use to build boats, in terms of both strength and resilience. It also has a galvanized-steel grid. In years past, there have been questions about the long-term integrity of that grid, but they’re unfounded. My feeling is that the massive steel structure is not encapsulated; it goes on top of the fiberglass structure, and it’s not an issue. I think this boat is straight-up wholesome. It’s a really, really lovely sailboat.”

Pillsbury found the efficient deck layout to his liking: “This boat was one of few we saw this year that actually had enough winches on it to sail it like a proper boat. We climbed on several others where a clutch was used to service several lines from a single winch. Sometimes it was hard to remember which clutch to open and which clutch to close, which took away a lot of the joy of sailing. Here you can just load up a winch and know that your line is going to be there, that you have quick access to it. I really liked that. It was also one of only a couple of boats that had a full-on traveler, which to my mind, when you carry a lot of sail, as this boat does, if you can’t really control and trim that mainsail, it’s a problem. And here’s another trend we saw for 2021: a below-deck furler for the headsail, which makes for a nice, clean deck layout.”

As far as the build quality, this x-yacht is one of the top two for this year.

Our X40 sea trials were also heavily influenced by the father/son owners who will be using the boat very differently, but who also made it quite clear that it will address and serve both of their sailing ambitions very well. Son Ryan is an avid inshore and offshore racer who has a Sydney-Hobart Race under his belt, who plans to campaign it hard; he’ll put the racing element into play. Doublehanded racing, especially in these socially distanced times, is becoming ever more popular, and the X40 should be ideal for those venues.

Ryan is a sailmaker, so there will of course be a full quiver of racing sails aboard. But the boat is also set up for his dad, Mike, and his wife to sail efficiently, with a self-tacking jib for cruising forays. (It also has a bow thruster and the electric furler for the jib, which added some weight forward and isn’t the ideal setup for racing; we’d guess Ryan and Mike had some interesting conversations about those features.)

But at the end of the day, the family wound up with a yacht that will be ideal for everyone in the household: a racer/cruiser that is every bit both. So, fair winds, Ryan and Mike. You’ve got the one boat perfect for the two of you.

First look: X-Yachts X 4.3

Toby Heppell

The first, second generation X-Yacht in the 'Pure' range, the X 4.3, has big boots to fill following a universally loved predecessor.

x yacht 31

Product Overview

The new version of the X 4.3 has some pretty big boots to fill. Not only had X-Yachts sold more than 100 of the yachts, she impressed many on launch, with Yachting Monthly’s own Graham Snook stating that she was ‘One of the best boats I’ve ever sailed’.

That is not a huge surprise from the Danish yard, which has always had an impressive reputation when it comes to the sailing characteristics of their yachts.

Back in 2016 when that boat was launched it was one of the first in a new line of models in the X-Yacht’s ‘Pure’ range. Over the years that range has expanded to several models. But, significantly, this is the first second generation of a ‘Pure’ X-Yachts boat.

The hull shape has been redesigned to carry max beam further aft, which provides a wider transom and cockpit. The cines running aft finish much higher than previously, which should help increase stability when heeled but keep wetted area down when in lighter winds.

There have been tweaks on deck too and the rig is slightly taller than the previous generation. Layout below remains relatively unchanged, however.

X-35 review: from the archive

Matthew Sheahan

  • Matthew Sheahan

X-Yachts' X-35 follows the hugely successful X-99, which has been a firm favourite of cruiser racers for years. But does it live up to its younger sisters reputation?

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

When it comes to serious numbers in one design yachts, the X-99 rates as one of the most successful designs of modern times, with 600 built since 1985. But after 21 years, the company that created one of the few big-boat classes to have ISAF status has launched its replacement, the X-Yachts X-35.

Given the huge success of the X-99, it’s clear X-Yachts have set themselves a very high target if they are to get anywhere near repeating this success.

But while no specific numbers have been issued on what X-Yachts expect of this class in years to come, it’s clear they are planning to use a similar technique to kick-start the class.

More than a year ago and with little more than a few drawings to go by, 42 boats were sold in the first month of 2005.

Plans for the launch of the new model involved a distribution strategy to ensure that fleets stood the best chance of sowing the seeds from which future local classes would grow.

After a long wait and much talk, the first few boats are now in the water and the class is close to taking off.

X-Yachts-X-35-review-in-action-credit-X-Yachts

X-Yachts have attempted to recapture their former success.

Partly through computer graphics being what they are and partly for reasons of cosmetic modesty, the X-Yachts X-35 isn’t much of a surprise when you first see her.

In fact, she doesn’t stand out at all at the dock – at best she looks typical of a modern X-Yacht.

She has a simple open cockpit, a large wheel and a pair of cockpit seats flanked by shallow coamings. However, she offers a great detail in terms of her control line layout and setup.

X-Yachts-X-35-review-in-action2-credit-X-Yachts

She has more gears upwind than you’ll know what to do with at first.

Closer inspection reveals that, although she doesn’t have a large overlapping headsail and therefore a second set of tracks, she lacks few of the controls of a Beneteau First 34, they’re just incorporated more discreetly. The mainsheet is a good example.

You may not think it is necessary to have a ‘German’ mainsheet system (where the mainsheet is led back along the side decks to a pair of winches fitted on either side of the cockpit) on a boat of just 35ft. I certainly didn’t.

But having just a 2:1 purchase in the mainsheet system keeps the amount of rope in the system to a minimum and helps keep the cockpit clutter-free. The system also means a fine tune is not required, reducing the clutter even further.

On top of this, the mast man can bounce the sheet at its forward end at leeward mark roundings to help rapid sheeting of the mainsail.

Having started out wishing for a more conventional system of blocks and tackles for the mainsheet, when I tried it aboard the Beneteau I didn’t like it.

X-Yachts-X-35-review-on-deck-credit-X-Yachts

Under way she has a solid, dependable, chunky feel to her helm.

The layout of control lines on the top of the coach roof is another example. Here, jammers are staggered lengthwise to make il easier for more crew to reach them from the weather rail.

Such attention to detail suggests that the X will be an easier boat to handle under pressure than the Beneteau.

But elsewhere are clues that this has been at the expense of some practical issues. The lack of an anchor locker won’t trouble many racing sailors – some may see it as an advantage – but the lack of any cockpit lockers could become a nuisance.

‘Small’ interior

Such details on deck turn out to be clues to an accommodation layout that is lacking in several areas once you step below decks and first impressions are of a small interior.

Overall the layout is a simple one, with galley to port, nav station to starboard and a pair of simple settee berths either side of a fixed saloon table.

However, the X-35 has a forward double cabin, which although roomy enough to be used, will no doubt be a waste of space for racing owners.

X-Yachts-X-35-review-nav-station-credit-X-Yachts

The navigation station is fairly cramped.

Having said that, one of the reasons for incorporating such a cabin is to enhance the boat’s value later in life when the heat of the racing scene may have eased.

The same reason for the liberal use of teak in the interior instead of wipe-clean mouldings as was the norm in the IMX-38 and fair enough.

What I found less easy to understand was why the lifting backs to the saloon seating hadn’t been set up to provide an upper berth.

X-Yachts-X-35-review-saloon-credit-X-Yachts

The X-35’s weakest point is below deck.

With full-width chainplates and no lockers or shelves (although these are an option), there are no obstructions to what would make a decent-sized berth to weather. Or, at the very least, a good and secure place to stow gear and kit bags.

Moving aft, the galley is small and awkward to use, the access to the afterberths restricted. And the top of the engine box has a curved surface and to my mind misses an opportunity to provide handy stowage for winch handles, blocks etc, just where you can get at them.

The lack of stowage is an issue throughout this boat apart from the cavernous space under the forward bunk, which clearly wouldn’t get used in racing trim.

On the starboard side, the outboard facing chart table is large and conveniently shares worktop space with the fridge to provide shy navigators with even less reason to come on deck. Overall, I was disappointed with the layout of this boat below decks.

Yet I also have to admit that for all my criticisms and given her primary objective, the accommodation would still not count for much in my own final analysis.

The X-Yachts X-35 has a sandwich-construction hull and deck, using a combination of biaxial E-Glass and a vinylester resin. Throughout, she is built to the same high standards as the rest of the fleet.

With X-Yachts’ trademark galvanised steel gridwork providing the primary load carrying structure in the bottom of the boat, suggesting she’ll be every bit as robust as her sisterships. Whatever the other criticisms, longevity still counts for a lot.

Subtle under sail

If chalk and cheese describe the differences between the X-Yachts X-35 and the Beneteau First 34.7, the expression will also suit the match between the disappointment of the X’s interior with the way she behaves under sail.

I’ve yet to test an X-Yacht that doesn’t feel good on the wheel and the X-35 is no exception. She’s finger-light, even when pressed, she’s sensitive, responsive and has more gears upwind than you’ll know what to do with at first.

She might be plain on the outside but she’s anything but when it comes to sailing her.

Although she’s a doddle to handle in the broad sense, it takes no time at all to realise that she’ll be a very tricky boat to sail well.

X-Yachts-X-35-review-in-action3-credit-X-Yachts

The conventional spinnaker will appeal to more conservative sailors.

To get the best out of her you’ll need patience, total concentration, a magic marker, plenty of tape and a waterproof notebook and pen.

So subtle is the feedback through the wheel that you’ll need to mark and jot down key settings and numbers to build a picture of what makes her tick.

In my opinion, this is just what you need for a good one-design class where performance benefits and top results are achieved through the hard work of crews rather than some technical advantage.

She feels quite a tender boat too (much like the X-99), a fact borne out by her higher sail area:displacement ratio when compared to the Beneteau.

X-Yachts-X-35-review-in-action4-credit-X-Yachts

The X-35 might be plain on the outside, but when it comes to sailing her, she’s anything but.

In just 10 knots of wind and clocking 6.8 knots in flat water she feels fully powered upwind – anymore and you’re dropping the mainsheet traveller down the track.

But while she might feel slightly tender, she remains under control on the helm.

The seating positions for helmsman and crew works well for all. And the control line layout works as well as it looks both upwind and down to make this a very nimble boat around the corners of the racecourse.

In addition, what impressed me was the attention to detail. Such as the rings in the guardwires through which the traveller lines run to keep them to hand.

Or a shockcord retrieval system to pull the spinnaker guy in towards the foredeck to make end-for-end gybing that bit easier for the foredeck crew.

Details like these come as standard. Impressive stuff and a good indication of where the heart of this boat really lies -racing.

The X-Yachts X-35 may have been designed with one-design racing as the main focus but, depending on how her IRC handicap shapes up she could prove to be a highly competent racer in the handicap scene as well. Something the X-99 never quite achieved on an international scale.

But if all this talk of racing is a little too hot, bear in mind that current X-332 owners are among the new boat’s target market.

Which should provide a rich source of secondhand 332s on the market, albeit with a ‘frequently raced and rallied label’.

The Next Chapter: Explore the Upgraded X4⁹ MkII by X-Yachts

X-Yachts X4

X-Yachts unveiled its new X-Yachts X4 ⁹ at boot Düsseldorf 2024, showcasing a host of enhancements aimed at elevating the sailing experience. This refined model boasts a refreshed aesthetic with an updated hull, a redesigned rudder, reduced weight, increased cabin luxury, and heightened overall performance.

Since its inaugural introduction in 2018 , the X4⁹ MkI played a pivotal role in solidifying the Pure X range’s presence in the global yacht market, with over 50 units sold worldwide. The enhancements introduced in the new X-Yachts X4⁹ MkII build upon its predecessor’s success, marking another milestone in the evolution of the Pure X series.

X-Yachts X4⁹ MkII: the Exterior

The exterior of the X-Yachts X4⁹ MkII has undergone a meticulous redesign, enhancing the helming position for both seated and standing positions. Noteworthy features include added coaming and wider foot support, reminiscent of the X5⁶, contributing to improved sail handling and increased comfort with longer cockpit benches.

The incorporation of the characteristic S-bow, first seen in the X5⁶ , allows for an extended integrated carbon bowsprit, accommodating a seamlessly integrated stainless steel anchor arm. This longer bowsprit facilitates the use of larger, more freely flying gennakers, for superior downwind performance. The redesigned cockpit opening towards the transom aligns with the sportier aesthetic of the X5⁶, creating a more inviting space when moored stern-first.

X-Yachts X4 cockpit

The hull, deck, and coach roof have undergone thoughtful modifications to optimize sail handling. The new coaming design allows for better winch positioning, while the coach roof portlights are now flush with no visible hinges, offering increased ventilation in the main cabin. The updated pulpits and pushpits showcase a more modern styling, with integrated backstay chainplates akin to the X5⁶.

x-yachts x5

Performance enthusiasts will appreciate the updated rudder design, providing enhanced grip in the water and reduced drag, resulting in higher speeds and increased comfort during extended passages. Structural engineering improvements to the hull and deck have effectively reduced total weight and lowered the center of gravity. Combined with a larger downwind sail area, the X-Yachts X4⁹ MkII delivers an even more impressive overall performance compared to its predecessor.

X-Yachts X4⁹ MkII: the Interior

Internally, both head compartments have been redesigned for increased durability and user-friendly functionality, maintaining quality features such as Corian tabletops. Accessibility to available storage space in the main cabin of the X-Yachts X4⁹ MkII has been improved, complementing the luxurious interior design options, including standard Oak veneers in a Nordic style or an optional teak variant. White vinyl paneling, teak laminate floor boards, bright white walled bathrooms with teak gratings, and Corian worktops with integrated sinks (Q Pack) further contribute to the sophisticated interior ambiance.

The ideal choice for sport, design, and performance

Our carbon masted Xp44 combines impressive performance with simplicity of handling, appealing to all the family. The comfort and luxury level beats any mainstream charter boat and it is on the same boat that sailors around the world excel in top racing events. Stability is the key principal and by using the most advanced build technology with vacuum infusion, carbon keel frame, hull and rudder design optimization and a unique carbon mast, the result is dynamic and easy going sailing under all weather conditions.

This model was the first of the Xperformance line to be launched, and was named Sailing World’s ‘Yacht of the Year’ in 2014.

A highly optimised hull shape offers exemplary performance in a range of wind conditions, on all angles of sail, under both ORC and IRC handicap systems. Key elements of the hull design include reduced upright beam and wetted surface area, while the transom shape ensures that as windspeed builds and the boat powers up, the overall waterline length increases for additional speed.

Comfort & Safety

Uncompromised Comfort

Space is luxury, five star outdoor living, safe by design.

Who said that true sailing performance comes only with plain unfriendly interiors. The X-Yachts design superiority hides behind the vacuum infusion technology on the hull construction, the carbon frame over the keel and the right weight distribution of all the fittings which let room -weight wise- to include all the necessary premium materials to create the feeling of a five star hotel, but this time on a boat.

The 3 cabin layout,  with two generously sized WCs/showers on a 44ft yacht is delivering lots of space everywhere, making living on board a truly relaxing experience. Ideally this yacht will comfortably accommodate 6 adults but if wished can sleep another two persons in saloon area and another two children or agile adults at the aft removable sea berths (check Layout & Accommodation details below ).

The well-proportioned saloon gives the yacht a spacious feel, but well positioned hand rails and good furniture placement ensure it is always safe and easy to move around no matter the heel angle.

Everything in the interior is a beautifully crafted in the known all time classic X-yachts way

The standard full teak bathing platform creates a perfect area for relaxing as well as easy access from the water or dinghy. In this way you can take full advantage of the swim stops or the overnight stays on one of the endless safe anchorages of the Greek archipelago.

The  cockpit space on board the Xp44 is not only designed to be functional and safe while at sea but also creates a luxurious outdoor living space. The twin wheels and recessed mainsheet track ensuring that the cockpit area is spacious and uncluttered.

A deck shower is fitted as standard. The high back rests not only offer protection while at sea but also create a comfortable seating area on the fitted cockpit cushions

The Xp44 incorporates 40yrs design experience of the Danish boat yard. A boat you feel sure to spend time on with your friends and family, even when the weather conditions are not ideal.

The vacuum infused epoxy, full sandwich hull saves important weight and it maximises strength and stiffness. All saved weight is used to increase the yachts’ stability enabling the crew to have a more relaxed time and to feel more safe and comfortable.

The carbon frame is glued to the inside of the hull and takes all the loads from the keel and mast. This keeps the yacht stiff, strong and safe. In the same aspect the lead bulb are encapsulated in a reinforced epoxy e-glass shell.

Sailing Performance, on Every Angle

Any boat can go well downwind with a decent sailplan and hull shape. The challenge for the Danish X-Yachts designers was how to achieve a big smile on the face of the skipper any time all directions of sailing are included in the route. And they did a pretty good job as you will realise from the first moments behind helm.

The Xp44 converts the Greek archipelago into a sailing arena waiting for you to explore and the Greek islands as your buoys. Easy you will consistently see two digit numbers in speed over ground when in broad reach with asymmetrical spinnaker and will be pointing incredibly high, with velocity-made-good unimaginable, compared to any other conventional yacht out there.

Flexible Sailplan, Easy to Handle

Taking full advantage of the carbon mast, we have engineered the sailplan of our Xp44 to be a perfect match to the sailing characteristics of the hull, to the different uses for holidays or racing and to the local Greek conditions. So all boats are fitted with:

  • Main sail with two reefs, 1 full & 4 mid. battens, cruising laminate taffeta CDX
  • Jib nr3.5, cruising laminate taffeta CDX, sheeted to tracks, adjustable from cockpit, with roller battens.
  • Optionally asymmetrical spinnaker A2
  • Optionally asymmetrical spinnaker A5
  • Optionally a Code Zero, to get you going when close reaching in light wind conditions

Ultimate Sail Design

All X-Yachting tri-radial sails have been thoroughly engineered up to every small detail, in order to perfectly match the X-Yachts sailing philosophy and honour the true sailing performance of each boat separately. Countless hours of work have been dedicated locally in Greece, from our globally  recognised partners Quantum Sails and their talented sail designer and race winning sailor Pat Tahtatzis to design, test and execute this important challenge and the result is in one word: “Perfect!”

Accommodation

3 cabins / 2 wcs / sleeps 6 adults + 2 adults + 2 children.

The layout includes the master bow cabin with a double bed and an ensuite WC with shower, the aft starboard cabin with one more double bed and the aft port side cabin with split bed which can be converted (upon request during booking) to full size double bed. The aft head has an independent entry door from the saloon area so that it can be shared from both aft cabins.  So 6 adults can comfortably sleep without any compromise.

If the team is up for it, another two adults can sleep in the saloon area in the two sofas. Also in both aft cabins there are sea berths which we can install (as an option), on the sides over the main bed, where another two children or agile adults can sleep (one per sea berth). This feature is often used by couples with one child/teenager or so or young friends.

So in total there can sleep max 10 passengers on board which is also the max nominal capacity of the boat.

THE XR 41 - WHERE PERFORMANCE MEETS INNOVATION

The development of the new XR is still at an early stage, but the vision and ambition are clear: The XR will be a winner, and therefore the X-Yachts in-house design team partnered up with some of the world’s most experienced companies and racers to reach that goal!

The partners will be working closely with the X-Yachts design team, and together they will design and build a race boat with winning potential for all major championships and regattas in ORC and potentially IRC.

Designing successful race winners under ORC and IRC is not new to X-Yachts. Take for example the, Xp 44, X-41, IMX 38, IMX 40 and IMX 45, that were all dominating on the race course for years - and still is. Just like these legendary models, the XR will also have a certain degree of cruising inheritance for the sporty family.

The illustrations below show one of the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) runs of the first XR hull. Each hull test consists of numerous variants, that in small increments on various parameters, evolved into the optimal performance over a large matrix of hull speeds and heel angles.

The XR 41 is a serious return to the X-Yachts DNA and after 45 years of X-Yachts racing history, we are now back in racing!

Designed with input from leading design teams, crafted from the finest material, and produced using the most advanced technologies to offer an unmatched racing experience. Optimized for ORC, the XR 41 is built to turn every breeze into speed!

The 41,8 ft. racer and sporty cruiser will have its world premiere at Boot Düsseldorf in 2025!

Fallout Show Vaults Explained: Vault 32, Vault 31, and How Many Are There?

Vaults on vaults on vaults.

Fallout Show Vaults Explained: Vault 32, Vault 31, and How Many Are There? - IGN Image

This post contains spoilers for the Fallout show on Prime Video .

Can’t have Vault-Tec without vaults! And, like your standard, everyday vault, these vaults are full of secrets. And also a whole bunch of human beings, mutants, and sometimes an errant corpse (or 50) every now and again. Fallout on Prime Video gives us a whole new glimpse at Bethesda’s universe , giving us a detailed look at Vault Dweller life before and after the apocalypse. Like the people who inhabit them, each vault is a little bit (or a lotta bit) different from the last. Let’s take a look at the locked up little homesteads we’re introduced to in Fallout Season 1!

Objectively the most important vault in Season 1 of Fallout, Vault 33 is where we spend the majority of our time. At least, so far as the vaults are concerned. Home to the MacLean family (consisting of Ella Purnell’s Lucy, Kyle MacLachlan’s Overseer Hank, and Moises Arias’ Norm) as well as a whole host of home-grown farm folk, Vault 33’s primary crop is corn and its appearance takes after the Nebraskan countryside. All of its occupants also have a strange affinity for jello cake.

This vault has been relatively free of hardship throughout its 200+ year run, but it did suffer a brief famine that resulted in quite a few casualties, including Lucy and Norm’s mother. At least so they think…

You know what they say! When you’re tired of bangin’ your cousin, look no further than Vault 32. (Surely someone must have said this…) Of course, mind the raiders. Even if the death of the vault wasn’t even said raiders’ fault.

Vault 32 is a picture of what happens when famine goes wrong. While at first it’s believed that Lee Moldaver (Sarita Choudhury) ravaged the vault, Norm and Chet (Dave Register) discover later in the season that the vault fell long before being opened to the outside world. In it, they find half eaten corpses, as well as a whole host of apparent suicide cases as the Vaulties tried to find whatever way they could to stave off the hunger.

Obviously, all of this was covered up by the Overseers.

The picture of what happens when “home grown” is taken a little bit too far. Sure, they don’t necessarily grow the folks, but they do dethaw them whenever Vault 33 requires a new overseer. Turns out, Vault 31 was the key to Vault-Tec’s evil plan. Or at least the human part of it. Before bringing about the apocalypse — twice — the high-ranking members of Vault-Tec cryogenically froze themselves, with the exception of Michael Asper’s Bud Askins who, instead, put his brain in a little robot dude so he could live on forever and unfreeze his counterparts whenever a new Overseer was required.

Ah, the ever-curious Vault 4 . Midway through the Fallout series, we learn that this was the home of the scientists. In an ad for Vault-Tec, Walton Goggins’ Cooper Howard praises the scientists, calling the small family the “real heroes.” Unfortunately, it appears that ethics didn’t come standard with their scientific curiosities. After decades of terrible experiments, the mutants created by the scientists rose up and overtook Vault 4, eventually opening it up to the wasteland and accepting Shady Sands survivors into their midst. Their Overseer may be a tad racist against surface dwellers, but Vault 4 is where Lucy learns to understand her own prejudices as well!
