Cruising Area of Sun Goddess

Accommodations, sun goddess specification, water sports, scuba diving, entertainment, green initiatives, sun goddess crew profile, captain/chef.

Kevin, or KDog as he’s known to family and friends, was born in Nicosia, Cyprus. His father was in the Marine Corps. and they moved all over the world to places such as Turkey, Lebanon, Beirut, Scotland, Japan and Germany before moving to the United States. Kevin´s first love of the water began at age 11 when he sailed Sunfish, Lightning, Rebel and Hobie Cats. He fell in love with the power of the wind and ocean, and quickly advanced to sailing larger Hobie Cats off the coasts of NC and VA. Kevin worked as a union elevator mechanic by trade, and also opened his own company installing swimming pools, and building decks and fences. Never one to sit idle, he completed several major remodeling projects around his former homes in Virginia and Florida, and won an award for best backyard design. After purchasing the catamaran, Kevin’s skills were immediately put to use making several modifications and upgrades, and his mechanical background will ensure regular maintenance is performed on Sun Goddess. Captain KDog looks forward to sharing his adventurous nature with you, and who knows, you might just find a buried treasure! Cheryl has a passion for hosting family, friends and guests, and what better place than the spectacular, crystal blue waters of the Caribbean! She was rated as a Super Host for their Virginia Beach Airbnb home and has transferred her knack for details to hosting guests aboard Sun Goddess. Cheryl’s background as an executive/personal assistant for Fortune 500 CEOs and state senators provided her with years of experience, fueling her love for coordinating travel as well as planning corporate and high-level political events, including a fundraiser for the President of the United States. When living in Virginia, friends encouraged her to start a small catering company which gave her an additional outlet to showcase her love of cooking and entertaining. She is excited about her transition from the corporate world to life on the water where she will serve as both captain and chef for guests. Whether you’re planning a vacation to celebrate a special event or a relaxing island get-away from work, Cheryl welcomes the opportunity to feed your soul with delicious meals and make your trip aboard Sun Goddess a memorable one. Ironically, Kevin and Cheryl met at a marina bar in Virginia Beach, VA. Looking back, it kind of seems apropos given their journey together. They enjoyed many years camping on the beaches in the OBX along with annual deep sea fishing trips. One vacation to the Caribbean changed everything. They booked an excursion on a private catamaran for a day and they were hooked. Sailing in crystal clear waters, walking on soft sandy beaches, snorkeling, swimming up to some cool beach bars, and being served ice cold drinks and a delicious lunch...well, life doesn´t get much better! Kevin and Cheryl love meeting new people, entertaining them, cooking for them and what better place to do this than the spectacular Virgin Islands on their Royal Cape catamaran with a flybridge. They are ready to welcome guests aboard their beautiful Sun Goddess!.

Thanks for sending these last photos and this excellent recap of our itinerary. As with all your planning of the trip and your hospitality, you think of every detail and always go above and beyond! We appreciate it so much. I know we already let you know this, but we could not have been happier with our trip or asked for a better crew than you and Kevin. On top of being knowledgeable about the USVI and BVI, we knew we were in expert hands on the Sun Goddess and always felt well taken care of, safe and comfortable – and well fed! You were careful and so thoughtful about Leo’s celiac – it made a huge difference for him to be able to relax and enjoy the trip without worrying about getting sick. And our comfort extended to feeling completely at home with you and Kevin – you gave us space but were always available and were wonderful company. We learned an enormous amount from both of you, which was another bonus! Having you as the crew added a special element to the trip. We loved getting to know you both. And thank you for your kind words about our family dynamics and the kids – we’ve always prioritized the importance of family to the kids and it’s wonderful to know that shows. We hope to catch up with you again when you visit New York! Julie and Gang

Amazing Adventures At Sea

Life has a way of bringing the right people together at the right times in our lives. We came onto the Sun Goddess with high expectations and hearts/minds full of wonder. The trip was more incredible than we ever could have imagined and the friendship we formed was nothing short of exceptional... truly a blessing to go on the adventure with two people that we now call ´friends´ in every sense of the word. Here´s to an amazing adventure at sea and allowing our hearts and souls to mesh. With love and admiration, Linc and Nat

Perfect Trip

I wanted to share a huge KUDOS to both Captain Cheryl and Captain Kevin! We had an absolutely PERFECT trip and could not have imagined anything better. Cheryl and Kevin make a great team ensuring their Sun Goddess guests have a wonderful experience. Cheryl was an amazing hostess and Kevin ensured a safe trip as he maneuvered the islands! They were professional and fun and suggested a great itinerary, since this was a new experience for us. We did everything on our list and more. Cheryl and Kevin went above and beyond to make sure we were having a great time and brought us to destinations we thoroughly enjoyed. Each place we stopped at had something different to experience. Cheryl prepared meals and snacks that were delicious and exceeded our expectations. She catered to the dietary requests of our group and succeeded in making everything so delightful. She had so many items at her fingertips anytime we had a request! She was always readily available if we had any requests. The catamaran was in pristine condition. The cabins had ample space and storage for our belongings. It was clean and well kept. The dinghy, paddle boards, floating coach, and other amenities were all in perfect condition. The snorkel gear we used was able to be fitted to each person and was very clean! Towels and sunscreen were always readily available. A bonus to our trip was the extra fun and easy going attitudes both Cheryl and Kevin have! They really made everything look so easy and our entire trip flow seamlessly! I cannot thank them enough for such a great experience! We will definitely use their charter again! Thank you, Dana B., St. Petersburg, Florida

Vacation of a lifetime!

Had a vacation of a lifetime aboard the beautiful Sun Goddess. This trip way exceeded all expectations. Captains Kevin and Cheryl went above and beyond to make sure every element of this trip was top notch. From the insiders knowledge and recommendations on island destinations to the 5-star meals, this trip couldn´t have been more enjoyable and relaxing. Especially notable were the pancakes with Baileys whipp[ed cream and the locally caught fresh fish tacos. no detail was left unmet. We will definitely book again next year. Kevin and Cheryl, you have us ´hooked!´ Alexa Westin, CA

It´s a sign of a great trip when you end up calling the crew your friends. Thank you for all that you have done for us this week to make our time with you special. We hope to sail with you again in the near future. Nancy Day, FL

Our family had a fantastic week on Sun Goddess. Kevin and Cheryl were the most wonderful hosts, catering to our every need in the most comfortable, gracious manner. The boat accommodated our group of six comfortably so that we could take full advantage of relaxing among the natural beauty around us. The Bote chair and loungers are a super addition to the boat and we enjoyed lounging with cocktails in our hands. We were so well taken care of from start to finish, from our fabulous itinerary, our sails, our excursions, and the amazing food and drinks, it was a week we will never forget. We are already planning when we can get back on board with Kevin and Cheryl. Missy Anderson, MI

Kevin, or KDog as he’s known to family and friends, was born in Nicosia, Cyprus. His father was in the Marine Corps. and they moved all over the world to places such as Turkey, Lebanon, Beirut, Scotland, Japan and Germany before moving to the United States. Kevin's first love of the water began at age 11 when he sailed Sunfish, Lightning, Rebel and Hobie Cats. Captain KDog looks forward to sharing his adventurous nature with you, and who knows, you might just find a buried treasure! ..read more

Sailing in crystal clear waters, walking on soft sandy beaches, snorkeling, swimming up to some cool beach bars, and being served ice cold drinks and a delicious lunch...well, life doesn't get much better!

Kevin and Cheryl love meeting new people, entertaining them, cooking for them and what better place to do this than the spectacular Virgin Islands on their Royal Cape catamaran with a flybridge. They are ready to welcome guests aboard their beautiful Sun Goddess!.

Central Japan: Rich Culture and Breathtaking Beauty

Happy in love under umbrellas and Japanese maple trees on this dreary Wednesday afternoon walking on slick pavement along a bubbling river. Central Japan has a quiet, peaceful beauty that drips from the trees and sinks into your skin in Central Japan.

Central Japan has a quiet, peaceful beauty that drips from the trees and sinks into your skin

By Andy Christian Castillo

Okazaki Castle in central Japan’s Aichi Prefecture.

Waning sunlight streamed through Japanese maple leaves, stark against drab conifers, and even more saturated than my New England home’s iconic sugar maples in all their autumnal glory.

Emerging from between red leaves, which shifted gently in a cool breeze, Japan’s  Okazaki Castle rose into the golden dusk.

Not far away, a black loon leaped from the bank of a pond, skimming low over the surface and landing again in an explosion of wings.

I stood across a dry moat inhaling that sweet scene; watching as the orange sun dipped below the white castle’s topmost roof. Birdsong filled the air, and my heart burst with adventure.

It was the Japan I’d waited to see – full of culture, history, and beauty.

Ancient Central Japan

Japan is old.

The longer I spent exploring the region around Nagoya the more I sensed that – it’s not uncommon to visit a structure or see a tree that’s over 1,000 years old.

According to the Ancient History Encyclopedia, the first signs of agriculture on what’s now known as Japan date back about 7,000 years. More recently (and that being relative), starting in the 10th century, military nobility called Samurai ruled from strongholds like Okazaki Castle.

Overlooking mist and mountains from Asuke Castle, which dates back to ancient Central Japan

Samurai was abolished in the late 1800s. But these days,  “every man has a samurai spirit,” said my guide, Yoshiko Tomiyama, referring to central Japan’s proud heritage.

This is exemplified especially well in Iga City , a region that housed two of the most famous ninja schools.

Ninja characters can be seen throughout the city.

There’s even a ‘ninja train’ decorated with martial arts decor, a museum dedicated to ninja history (Iga-ryu Ninja Museum, including a ‘ninja show’).

And a ‘cat ninja’ lives in Green Tea Shop, which isn’t far from a restaurant owned by a man whose ancestor was a ninja.

Rich cultural traditions

Japanese culture is so rich because traditions have been passed down through generations with little change.

A framework of hierarchy and skill-based teaching are melded into society. Knowledge seamlessly flows from old to young on into the future.

For example, the main building at Geku shrine (one of 125 Ise Jingu Shinto shrines collectively dedicated to the sun goddess) is torn down and rebuilt next door every 20 years.

And every day for the past 1,500 years, since the shrine’s inception, food has been offered to the sun goddess. Every year 57,000 pieces of clay pottery are made and then returned to soil the following day.

Moving the Bridge

Geku shrine is not exclusive in this practice. Many buildings at Ise Jingu shrines change locations periodically. And it’s not just buildings. A wooden bridge spanning the Isuzu River leading to Naiku shrine traversed yearly by about five million people, is also moved every 20 years.

While this constant recreation has deep roots in Shinto belief – specifically, that some deities move periodically, and that nothing lasts forever – it also serves to teach religious rituals and construction techniques to the next generation.

A shrine at Toyokawa Inari Temple.

Religion and social norms in Japanese society are intrinsically infused. That’s why there’s no litter on streets or sidewalks.

Everything Has a Spirit

“Everything we have is a blessing from the divine. Everything has a spirit,” Tomiyama explained while driving from Nagoya-Chubu International Airport soon after I’d landed.

“It’s part of our lifestyle. If we keep the earth clean, we believe good luck will visit our house. This is such a part of our daily life,” Tomiyama said.

Japan’s religion runs deep. I literally felt it while exploring Toyokawa Inari Temple , which is believed to grant prosperous business.

The knees and belly of a statue of Daikokuten, a spiritual figure, were indented because so many people had rubbed it for good fortune. And surrounding the temple’s main shrine were thousands of foxes – donated by people whose petitions were answered.

Fox statues are significant at the shrine because foxes eat birds. In ancient days, birds destroyed crops, which in turn hurt business. Thus, the fox symbolizes business success.

Japanese maple trees

Japanese Maple

Most notable are the many Japanese maple trees in Korankei valley near Asuke town.

Mount Iimori

I traveled in November, just past peak bloom, and walked a path not far from the city that leads up Mount Iimori, known locally for its spiritual elements. The mountain was covered with thousands of vibrant maple trees.

Near the top, I found a Shinto temple, and across a river on Taigetsukyo Bridge explored a historic replica village, Yashiki Village . I traversed a riverwalk on the way back lined with native food vendors.

A short drive from the city is Asuke Castle, an ancient military fortification on top of a hill. The grounds surrounding the castle are beautiful. Dirt paths wind through Japanese maples, toothpick pine trees and Moso, Japan’s giant bamboo shoots.

And from the castle’s topmost room it’s possible to see for many miles. When I was there, a soft cool breeze blew in from open windows, and maple trees burned with color on hazy mountaintops stretching off into a misty horizon.

Business | south florida yacht brokers hit with lawsuits that claim 10% commissions violate antitrust laws.

Yachts are among the vessels seen on display in this 2019 file photo in Palm Beach County. Two new lawsuits, filed in 2024, aim to upend years-old ways of awarding commissions to brokers representing boat sellers and buyers. (South Florida Sun Sentinel file photo)

Two newly filed federal lawsuits claim that 10% sales commissions required by South Florida’s yacht broker industry are anticompetitive and violate antitrust laws.

The claims follow an October finding by a federal jury in Kansas City, Missouri, that the National Association of Realtors conspired with brokers to artificially inflate commissions paid to real estate brokers. The ruling, and a March 15 settlement by the Realtors, is expected to radically change how homes are sold in the United States.

Both lawsuits involving yacht brokers name as defendants the International Yacht Brokers Association, based in Fort Lauderdale, the Yacht Brokers Association of America, Boats Group LLC and YATCO LLC.

Also listed as defendants in both suits are a who’s who of South Florida-based yacht brokers, including Denison Yacht Sales, MarineMax Inc., Galati Yacht Sales Inc., Allied Marine Inc., Tournament Yacht Sales LLC and Northrop & Johnson Yacht Ships, among others.

Nearly all of the defendants are headquartered in South Florida.

The most recent suit, filed on March 22, proposes a class of plaintiffs that includes anyone who listed vessels on certain Multiple Listing Services using a listing agent or broker affiliated with one of the defendants and paid a buyer’s broker commission since March 22, 2020.

The lead plaintiff in the lawsuit is Kip Lamar Snell, identified as an Alabama resident. Snell entered into an agreement with Galati to sell a 41-foot Express Cruiser Sea Ray in July 2020 and ended up paying a $12,000 commission on the $120,000 sale price, the suit states. The lawsuit lists as defendants 15 brokers and six organizations that promote the yacht trade or operate Multiple Listing Services.

That lawsuit follows one filed on Feb. 29 that proposes a class of plaintiffs that includes anyone who paid a commission to a listing broker affiliated with the defendants since Feb. 19, 2020. It lists as defendants 11 brokers and five organizations that promote the yacht trade or operate Multiple Listing Services.

The lead plaintiff in that suit is Ya Mon Expeditions, a Wyoming company that paid a “substantial broker commission” when it sold a vessel in January 2023 while represented by Tournament Yacht Sales of Tequesta.

The most recent complaint accuses the trade associations of colluding with brokers to “enforce an anticompetitive restraint that requires (sellers of pre-owned yachts and boats) to pay a brokerage fee to the buyer’s broker and a total aggregate commission fee that is inflated as a condition for selling their yachts.”

The complaint states the typical commission is 10% and is shared between the seller’s broker and the buyer’s broker under terms spelled out in Central Listing Agreements provided by the brokers associations, including the International Yacht Brokers Association and the Yacht Brokers Association of America.

Only boat brokers are able to list boats and yachts on such Multiple Listing Services as YachtWorld.com, BoatTrader.com and Boats.com, and the Multiple Listing Services will not accept listings from owners who want to sell their vessels themselves, the lawsuit states.

Yacht owners are “severely disadvantaged” if they do not list their boats for sale on the listing services, while buyers suffer because their brokers are “financially incentivized” to show boats that will earn them standard “and inflated” commission rates of 4% to 5% through co-brokerage transactions, the complaint states.

None of the defendants contacted for this story responded to a request for comment, and no response has been filed yet in either case.

Robert Allen Jr., whose Miami-based law firm Robert Allen Law represents the International Yacht Brokers Association, did not respond to emails or return a phone call.

A woman who answered the phone at the International Yacht Brokers Association said, “We have no comment on that,” and hung up after a reporter asked for her name.

Of six brokers contacted for comment about the lawsuits, only Tournament Yacht Sales responded to emails. “No comment,” the company’s response stated.

Overall commissions have increased faster than the rate of inflation in recent years as the price of larger boats and yachts have increased, according to the lawsuit that lists Snell as lead plaintiff.

The result is that boat owners pay “hundreds of millions of dollars” in inflated commissions each year, the suit alleges.

Both lawsuits allege violations of the Sherman Antitrust Act that are upheld by “brokers who should be competing with one another but, instead, cooperate with each other to the detriment of pre-owned boat sellers.”

Some brokerages represent both buyers and sellers and retain the entire 10% commissions, the suits state.

The trade associations enforce rules requiring brokers to offer their boats through a listing service and to share commissions, the suits state, adding that they can impose significant penalties on members who do not comply with their rules.

Yacht purchasers are disadvantaged by the current system, the lawsuit alleges, because their agents would otherwise negotiate for their business by decreasing their commission rates.

But buyer brokers’ commissions have remained constant despite their diminishing role, the suits state. Many buyers today find boats they are interested in purchasing through online searches and enlist the services of a buyer’s broker only after identifying the yacht they want to buy, the suits claim.

The lawsuits seek an order declaring the commission structure to be illegal, a permanent injunction outlawing what they describe as anticompetitive conduct, plus damages and/or restitution, pre- and post-judgment interest, and attorneys’ fees.

Paul Geller, an attorney for one of two law firms representing the class that includes Snell, acknowledged “parallels between the allegations relating to commissions in the real estate and yacht markets.”

In the real estate matter, the National Association of Realtors on March 15 agreed to a $418 million proposed settlement that would free home sellers from paying commissions to brokers for both sellers and buyers.

After a jury ruled for the plaintiffs in the case against the National Association of Realtors in October, numerous lawsuits were filed across the country with similar allegations, including one in December against the Florida Association of Realtors and 16 brokerages.

“At bottom, the goals of (the suit against the yacht brokers) are similar: protecting consumers by challenging what we allege to be anti-competitive conduct,” Geller said by email. “We believe in the universal truth that consumers benefit by increased transparency and the competitive pricing that results from negotiated terms, including commissions.”

Geller is a partner at Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP, which specializes in securities litigation on behalf of investors. The firm has offices in 10 cities, including Boca Raton.

Maya nobility performed bloodletting sacrifices to strengthen a 'dying' sun god during solar eclipses

The Maya created a complex calendar system to regulate their world — one of the most accurate of pre-modern times.

El Castillo pyramid illuminated at night under a starry sky in Chichen Itza, Mexico, one of the largest Maya cities.

We live in a light-polluted world, where streetlamps, electronic ads and even backyard lighting block out all but the brightest celestial objects in the night sky. But travel to an officially protected " Dark Sky" area , gaze skyward and be amazed.

This is the view of the heavens people had for millennia. Pre-modern societies watched the sky and created cosmographies, maps of the skies that provided information for calendars and agricultural cycles. They also created cosmologies, which, in the original use of the word, were  religious beliefs to explain the universe . The gods and the heavens were inseparable.

The skies are orderly and cyclical in nature, so watch and record long enough and you will determine their rhythms. Many societies were able to accurately predict lunar eclipses, and some could also  predict solar eclipses  — like the one that will occur over North America  on April 8, 2024 .

The path of totality, where the Moon will entirely block the Sun, will cross into Mexico on the Pacific coast before entering the United States in Texas, where  I teach the history of technology and science , and will be seen as a partial eclipse across the lands of the ancient Maya. This follows the October 2023 annular eclipse, when it was possible to  observe the "ring of fire" around the Sun  from many ancient Maya ruins and parts of Texas.

A millennia ago, two such solar eclipses over the same area within six months would have seen Maya astronomers, priests and rulers leap into a frenzy of activity. I have seen a similar frenzy — albeit for different reasons — here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where we will be in the path of totality. During this period between the two eclipses, I have felt privileged to share my interest in the history of astronomy with students and the community.

Ancient astronomers

The ancient Maya were arguably one of the greatest sky-watching societies.  Accomplished mathematicians , they recorded systematic observations on the motion of the Sun, planets and stars.

From these observations, they created a  complex calendar system  to regulate their world — one of the most accurate of pre-modern times.

Astronomers closely observed the Sun and aligned monumental structures, such as pyramids,  to track solstices and equinoxes . They also utilized these structures, as well as caves and wells,  to mark the zenith days  — the two times a year in the tropics where the Sun is directly overhead and vertical objects cast no shadow.

Maya scribes kept accounts of the astronomical observations in codices, hieroglyphic folding books made from fig bark paper. The  Dresden Codex , one of the four remaining ancient Maya texts, dates to the 11th century. Its pages contain a wealth of astronomical knowledge and religious interpretations and provide evidence that the Maya could predict solar eclipses.

From the codex's  astronomical tables , researchers know that the Maya tracked the lunar nodes, the two points where the orbit of the Moon intersects with  the ecliptic  — the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun, which from our point of view is the path of the Sun through our sky. They also  created tables  divided into the 177-day solar eclipse seasons, marking days where eclipses were possible.

Heavenly battle

An illustration from the Dresden Codex shows the Venus god descending from a sky band containing solar and lunar symbols.

But why invest so much in tracking the skies?

Knowledge is power. If you kept accounts of what happened at the time of certain celestial events, you could be forewarned and take proper precautions when cycles repeated themselves. Priests and rulers would know how to act, which rituals to perform and which sacrifices to make to the gods to guarantee that  the cycles of destruction, rebirth and renewal  continued.

An image of the Maya sun god Kinich Ahau, made between the sixth and ninth centuries, now housed in Mexico’s National Museum of Anthropology.

In the Maya's  belief system , sunsets were associated with death and decay. Every evening the sun god, Kinich Ahau, made the perilous journey through Xibalba, the Maya underworld, to be born anew at sunrise. Solar eclipses were seen as  a "broken sun " — a sign of possible cataclysmic destruction.

Kinich Ahau was associated with prosperity and good order. His brother Chak Ek – the morning star, which we now know as the planet Venus — was associated with war and discord. They had  an adversarial relationship , fighting for supremacy.

Their battle could be witnessed in the heavens. During solar eclipses,  planets, stars and sometimes comets can be seen during totality . If positioned properly, Venus will shine brightly near the eclipsed Sun, which the Maya interpreted as Chak Ek on the attack. This is hinted at in the Dresden Codex, where a diving Venus god appears in the solar eclipse tables, and in the  coordination of solar eclipses with the Venus cycles  in the Madrid Codex, another Maya folding book from the late 15th century.

With Kinich Ahau — the Sun — hidden behind the Moon, the Maya believed he was dying. Renewal rituals were necessary to restore balance and set him back on his proper course.

Nobility, especially the king, would perform  bloodletting sacrifices , piercing their bodies and collecting the blood drops to burn as offerings to the sun god. This "blood of kings" was the highest form of sacrifice, meant to strengthen Kinich Ahau. Maya believed the creator gods had given their blood and mixed it with maize dough to create the first humans. In turn, the nobility  gave a small portion of their own life force to nourish the gods .

Time stands still

In the lead-up to April's eclipse, I feel as if I am completing a personal cycle of my own, bringing me back to earlier career paths: first as an aerospace engineer who loved her orbital mechanics classes and enjoyed backyard astronomy; and then as a history doctoral student, studying how Maya culture persisted after the Spanish conquest.

For me, just like the ancient Maya, the total solar eclipse will be a chance to not only look up but also to consider both past and future. Viewing the eclipse is something our ancestors have done since time immemorial and will do far into the future. It is awesome in the original sense of the word: For a few moments it seems as if time both stops, as all eyes turn skyward, and converges, as we take part in the same spectacle as our ancestors and descendants.

And whether you believe in divine messages, battles between Venus and the Sun, or in the beauty of science and the natural world, this event brings people together. It is humbling, and it is also very, very cool.

I just hope that Kinich Ahau will grace us with his presence in a cloudless sky and once again vanquish Venus, which is  a morning star  on April 8.

A total eclipse is near. For some, it's evidence of higher power. For others it's a warning

Editor's note: An updated cloud forecast for the April 2024 total solar eclipse is in. Read the latest eclipse forecast and news as of Wednesday, April 3 .

On April 8 in Gatesville, Texas, members of Coryell Community Church will congregate at the campus’ hilltop site where a trio of 70-foot crosses tower over the city of 17,000, 38 miles west of Waco .

The region lies in the center of the approaching solar eclipse’s path of totality , the last such event to affect the contiguous United States until 2044. Ancient cultures viewed the dusk-like darkness prompted by the passing of the moon between the Earth and the sun , temporarily blocking the sun’s light, as a sign of the gods’ anger or even their impending departure.

Instead, Coryell’s “ Eclipse of the Crosses ” family gathering will feature live music, games and worship – an occasion to celebrate. Meanwhile, organizers at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo have bought a thousand eclipse glasses for a viewing event, complete with black-and-white half-moon cookies.

Is the April 2024 eclipse safe for pets? Why experts want you to leave them at home.

As the faithful convene in scattered Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities around the country, the gatherings reflect how celestial events once seen as ominous by some religious communities continue to wield spiritual significance today.

“An eclipse is yet another opportunity to witness the handiwork of God that exists in the universe,” said Eric Moffett, Coryell’s lead pastor. “We aren’t looking for any omens in the cosmos, but we are using this as an opportunity to, for a little over four minutes, be reminded that we live in a world made by God and sustained by his love and goodness.”

Eclipses have inspired fear and awe among civilizations throughout history, from the Aztecs to the ancient Hindus. They're also associated with some major religious events, including the darkness that accompanied Jesus’ crucifixion in Christianity and, in Islam, the passing of the Prophet Muhammad’s son, Ibrahim.

As the Bible's Gospel of Mark 15:33 reads: "And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour."

Such references often emphasize the power of God over the cosmos, said James Willis, an assistant professor of practice for religion at the University of Indianapolis.

“What we today see as an astronomical event, people previously interpreted as having life-and-death significance," Willis said.

Earlier this month, in the Choctaw Nation newspaper Biskinik, a recurring column exploring Choctaw culture noted the sun was considered to bring life and good fortune; for some communities, when solar eclipses occurred, it was as if great black squirrels in the sky were devouring the sun. In response, all were called upon to make noise to frighten them away.

Bradley Schaefer, a professor of astronomy at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, said in most pre-modern cultures, the sun god was among the most powerful deities in the pantheon. An eclipse represented the destruction of that god – or at least a dire sign.

“Where better to put signs from the gods but in the heavens?” Schaefer said. “If you see a sign in the heavens, it’s got to be from the gods. They’re telling us something, and what was universal from culture to culture is that it was always bad.”

In Islam, eclipses offer an occasion to pray

Fourteen centuries ago, as Islam’s Muhammad and his supporters grieved his deathly ill son, the prophet watched the toddler breathe his last as the skies darkened above them – the beginning, it is believed, of a total eclipse.

As the story goes, speculation spread among Muhammad’s followers that even the sun and moon were grieving his loss. In response, he summoned them to prayer and dispelled that notion, but added that such events, as signs of God’s power, should nonetheless inspire them to pray.

Omid Safi, a professor of Islamic studies at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, said tradition holds that both solar and lunar eclipses are “divine matters unfolding in nature” while honoring the prophet’s “steadfast refusal to use the fortuitous occasion of a solar eclipse at the passing of his son as a way of bolstering his own standing.”

While Islam’s eclipse prayer is not a mandatory one, many still take time to recite it. During last fall’s annular eclipse, Muslim Americans around the U.S. gathered in places such as the Muslim Community Center–East Bay in Pleasanton, California; The Mecca Center in Willowbrook, Illinois; and Commons Park in Fridley, Minnesota.

Nadia Abuisnaineh, who volunteers as a NASA solar system ambassador in the Minneapolis area, organized the Minnesota event hoping not only to pique her community’s scientific curiosity but also its sense of identity as Muslims.

Still, she had no idea the public gathering would come as Palestinians scrambled to evacuate northern Gaza in anticipation of a massive counteroffensive by Israeli forces, a week after the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israel. The timing made the gathering all the more powerful, she said.

“My community was very hurt, and for them, it was a time to reflect and ask God to alleviate the pain and suffering,” Abuisnaineh said. “I never imagined that five months later, with the second eclipse coming, that we would still have to think about this and be advocating for our brothers and sisters in Palestine.”

Those who witnessed the October eclipse were overcome by the event, she recalled, in particular, two older people who were moved to tears.

“Whether they were tears of grief because of what was happening in Gaza or just being overwhelmed by the eclipse and strengthening their relationship with God, it’s a privilege to allow people to do that,” she said.

With the April 8 event coming during the most intense period of Ramadan, Abuisnaineh isn’t planning to arrange another prayer gathering. Instead, she plans to remind community members to use the time to reflect.

An avid stargazer who takes any opportunity to view the night sky, she’s not about to miss a solar eclipse.

“If it’s sunny, I’ll take out all my eclipse glasses and knock on every door in my neighborhood,” Abuisnaineh said. “It’s just a bummer to live your life and not know these things happen.”

A warning of God’s imminent wrath?

Perspectives on eclipses vary widely within the Jewish community, said Mark Horowitz, chief operating officer for the Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo, New York. More conservative members, he said, still consider them warnings, especially for those in their path of totality.

“There are a lot of people who don’t believe it’s a time for putting on glasses, getting together and drinking or whatever people are going to do,” Horowitz said. “Some people believe it’s a time for prayer and introspection.”

The Hebrew word for eclipse, he noted, translates to “defect.”

Weather on eclipse day: Everything to know about Monday's total solar eclipse: Latest forecast includes optimism

“When the luminaries are stricken, it is an ill omen for the world,” reads the Talmud, a central text of Judaism. The passage offers the example of a king who, after preparing a feast for his servants, becomes angry with them and orders the removal of the lantern illuminating their banquet.

Even now, some say celestial happenings warn of God’s imminent wrath; some have even claimed they bear political significance . In November 2022, some ultraconservative Christian pastors said the approaching blood moon lunar eclipse portended a surge of Republican midterm wins.

“God is warning America of impending disaster and destruction,” Anne Graham Lotz, daughter of iconic evangelist Billy Graham and founder of AnGel Ministries, wrote on her blog as the solar eclipse of August 2017 approached.

More recently, Lotz has seen speculation among some that the combined paths over the U.S. of this year’s eclipse and the previous two solar eclipses appear to mimic the shapes of the first and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet – in other words, the beginning and the end.

“Maybe people are reading too much into it,” she said. “But when you look at the world, you don’t need an eclipse to know that things are getting really dangerous. Maybe it’s telling us it’s time to get right with God and the people in our lives so that we have no regrets.”

Eclipses offer a spiritual experience, even for nonbelievers

Schaefer, of Louisiana State University, said as the science behind eclipses began to be understood, some used such knowledge to their advantage, among them Christopher Columbus, who in 1504 was shipwrecked with his crew in Jamaica and for months relied on local natives to provide food in exchange for trinkets.

As those gifts started to wear thin, the natives refused to continue, Schaefer said. Columbus seized on the idea of using an approaching lunar eclipse to convince the locals he could commune with the gods and make the moon disappear.

“That’s the beauty of science, is when you make predictions they come true,” Schaefer said. “Columbus knew it was just a shadow. But the Jamaicans saw it as a death of a god. Once you understand what an eclipse is, it’s no longer the realm of the gods.”

Still, he said, even the way Americans view eclipses has changed over time. Accounts of New Yorkers witnessing a total eclipse in 1924 described silent crowds of people solemnly taking it in.

“Now it’s just raucous fun,” Schaefer said. “No one is fearful that Jupiter will come down and steal their soul.”

Witnessing a solar eclipse, however, can provide a spiritual experience, even for those who aren’t necessarily religious, he and others said.

Former NASA engineers Jeff Stone and his wife, Susan, will be experiencing the eclipse from their hilltop home in Kerrville, Texas.

“Her priority was to have a nice view,” Stone said. “My priority was to be as close to the centerline of the eclipse as possible. We managed to do both.”

When they worked as flight controllers for the Space Shuttle program at Houston’s Johnson Space Center, the couple traveled to Mexico in 1991 to experience nearly seven minutes of totality when a solar eclipse passed over the region. They’ve been eclipse-chasers ever since.

On April 8, the Stones will host a dozen-plus visitors from as far away as Sweden to experience this year’s event.

“It’s such an emotional event,” Stone said. “It touches your soul, it really does. Any time you realize there’s something bigger than you, it gives you perspective. Surely that power has a purpose.”

In Buffalo, Horowitz said the eclipse, an obvious reminder of nature’s beauty, offers a chance to reflect on nature’s fragility and to find hope amid worldly chaos and personal challenges.

“You can sometimes be clouded by all that darkness,” he said. “The natural world is trying to tell us that beyond the darkness, there is light.”

Victoria and David Beckham celebrated Easter Sunday by soaking up the sun with their family aboard a multimillion-dollar megayacht in Miami.

The Spice Girls alum shared a few snaps of the festivities via Instagram , showcasing her husband and three of their four kids – Brooklyn, 25, Cruz, 19, and Harper, 12 – living their best lives. Brooklyn’s wife, Nicola Peltz, also celebrated with the family, while 21-year-old Romeo was away for the weekend.

The sun-filled snaps showed the former soccer player, 48, and Posh Spice, 49, dressed in summer attire while sporting pink-and-white bunny ears. At one point they posed upside down on a lounge while pretending to sleep for a cute pic.

“Happy Easter!! We love and miss you @romeobeckham!! Kisses from the Beckhams and Peltz Beckhams,” Victoria captioned the photo dump.

On Saturday, Victoria also posted a video of herself and Peltz dancing to the Spice Girls’ 1996 hit “Say You’ll Be There” while on the boat.

David also shared pics to his own Instagram feed on Sunday, including sweet throwback snaps of his sons holding a massive chocolate bunny when they were young. He included a picture of his daughter holding a yellow duck figurine and another of his wife wearing bunny ears.

It appears the A-list family has been spending several days abroad their yacht as they were first spotted taking a cruise on Wednesday.

The ritzy Riva 130 Bellissima Yacht is seemingly a new purchase for the couple, who were previously owners of a much smaller $6.5 million Riva Argo 90 .

The silver vessel, which measures about 40 meters and 130 feet, fits up to 10 guests in five suites.

Victoria Beckham

Since February 2014, Victoria and David have spent the majority of their time under the Florida sun as the former Manchester United pro has signed on to work for Inter Miami CF.

When the UK natives aren’t in Florida, they are likely spending time in their  $40 million Victorian townhouse  in London, which is located on “Millionaire’s Row” in Kensington.

The couple reportedly have a combined net worth of $514 million to help support their lavish lifestyle .
