Dramatic moment crew member falls overboard during sailing race caught on video

Now to a heart-stopping moment and a miraculous rescue, all caught on camera. While competing in the Australia Sail Grand Prix, a Great Britain crew member was swept off his catamaran and was thrown into the water, spinning like a ragdoll all at high speed.

Watch the harrowing moment Great Britain's Matt Gotrel goes overboard, falling through the catamaran while still tethered to the boat and as he is frantically tossed around for a few seconds.

"I got up and got to the wing, and the next thing I knew, I was kind of falling backward and I was in the water pretty quick," Gotrel recalled.

His team mates rushing to the rescue, managing to quickly pull him back on board.

"Oh, my God. How are we going to resolve this one? Because it was a pretty insane situation," fellow teammate Ben Ainslie said.

Team GB was taking part in the international sailing competition, SailGP. This leg of the competition was in Sydney.

Teams use high-performance F50 catamarans, with top speeds of 60 MPH.

Remarkably, Gotrel did not sustain any major injuries other than just a few scuffs.

He later took to Instagram to make fun of his dramatic fall saying, "Some places aren't for standing! Great work by the team to get me back on board so quickly - thankfully just a few bruises to take home! #ragdoll #bouncebabybounce #tuckandroll #SailGP"

Despite his frightening ordeal, the sportsman never giving up.

"I just wanted to get back on and finish the races and get back as many points as we could in that short amount of time," Gotrel said. "The adrenaline was flowing and I didn't really think about anything else other than going back in and doing my job."

Team GB finished in 6th place in that race, but getting their teammate back on board safe and sound was priceless.

Footage has emerged of a 235ft superyacht crashing into a luxury Caribbean yacht club’s pier, causing visible damage to both the yacht and the dock.

Onlookers were shocked last week (February 24) when a 235ft (77m) superyacht collided with the dock of Sint Maarten Yacht Club in the Caribbean.

Video footage of the incident shows the extent of the damage – while the pier took the brunt of it, the superyacht’s steel hull didn’t come off unscathed.

Computer malfunction was to blame for the sickening superyacht crash, according to local publication The Daily Herald , which adds that no-one was injured as a result.

Turning a yacht around after a person goes overboard (MOB) and heading back in the right direction to retrieve them isn’t always easy when you’re taken by surprise, particularly at night. As navigators we need to employ all the help available to us, and be able to use any electronic tools instantly.

Sadly, there have been MOB occurrences when the technology has been available and not deployed, or not deployed correctly. The obvious solution is to practice MOB drills.

Coming from a military aviation background I’m used to placing a great emphasis on practising emergencies. To survive military flying training you need to be able to maintain a cool head when things are falling apart. The focus is on developing ‘automotive actions’ to a crisis. Learning the correct initial actions to an emergency is essential for a pilot as these first actions are carried out in seconds.

‘Subsequent actions’ are carried out in a longer timescale, and often with the help of flight reference cards. These can also help confirm those vital ‘initial actions’. I can still remember how to shut down both engines of a Sea King in mid-air in the event of a fire, some 25 years since I last flew that type of helicopter! Sailors can also learn from this method of training.

Different MOB drills are needed for different yachts, depending on wind strength, sea state, number and experience of crew, point of sail, boat speed and time of day. There is good reason why the RYA doesn’t specify a single way to execute a MOB recovery. However, whatever type of yacht you sail, there are still some ‘initial actions’ for MOB that can be standardised.

The subsequent actions will vary depending on the conditions mentioned above. Practice helps a great deal, but even talking through these actions when alongside will help. Not many people go out and practise MOB drills at night.

Searching for a MOB in the dark is never easy. Apart from AIS PLBs, one of the best new ways of showing your position is to utilise ultra-bright LED flares. They are mesmerisingly bright. They last five to six hours and can easily be switched on and off like a torch. I’ve also trialled using an infrared camera.

Using technology

Modern technology can now help in an MOB situation more than ever before, from wearable transmitters that activate an alarm when a crewmember is out of range, to personal locator beacons (PLBs). Crew can now activate the MOB button not just on the chartplotter but also on a smart watch.

Clever boat instrument systems can also translate that information onto other displays that is easy to interpret. If you have AIS transposed onto your chartplotter or navigation software then it can pick up an AIS PLB. Some activate an audio alarm but it helps to know what to expect.

In last year’s RORC Caribbean 600 race , when the 53ft catamaran Fujin capsized at night, I was navigating on a Ker 56 reaching at 20 knots. I’d gone below to download weather data and could hardly hear myself think as the noisy carbon boat crashed through waves. But I heard a beeping sound coming out of the back of the laptop so I checked my power leads and struggled to find reason for it.

About to give up, I scrolled through several weather programmes and discovered it coming from the Adrena navigation software and found my only clue to Fujin ’s plight – an AIS PLB and a round red circle on the chart about three miles ahead.

Unable to transmit a Mayday or recover their grab bag in the windy conditions, a Fujin crewmember had initiated his AIS PLB. This was their initial alert. With an AIS PLB there is no boat name showing, so my initial suspicion was that we were looking for a single person in the water – but instead found a capsized catamaran with the whole crew waving torches hoping we’d see them. From this PLB activation a full recovery operation was launched and Fujin was eventually saved.

If you are overboard in the water, understanding how to activate your PLB or automatic identification system (AIS) transmitter is imperative. Some are set up to activate with your lifejacket and some people (me included) like to have my AIS PLB in my pocket should I happen to ‘sin’ and not wear a lifejacket when sailing in warm waters.

Knowing how to summon help on your VHF radio should also be part of your pre-sailing safety brief. Showing your crew how to push the distress button to utilise the digital selective calling (DSC) is a rapid way to send details of your identity and position.

Due to the annoying number of false alarms, if you press the red button in anger then you need to be ready to authenticate the message with voice or repeat the signal to give the coastguard the confidence to act on a genuine alarm.

Immediate man overboard actions

• Call out ‘Man Overboard’ to alert the rest of the crew
• Drop a lifebuoy/danbuoy/jonbuoy
• Get a crew member to point at the person in the water (where the helmsman can easily see them)
• Press the MOB button on chart plotter/smart watch
• By day, throw an orange smoke cannister (have one in easy reach of the helm), at night throw a floating torch
• Start your recovery manoeuvre

Luke Bryan slips on fan's cellphone during concert, jokes he needed to go 'viral'

Luke Bryan is going viral for his onstage tumble.

The "Country Girl" singer tripped on a fan's cellphone that made its way to the stage floor at the Coast City Country Festival in Vancouver on Saturday.

Bryan, 47, laughed off his fall after landing on his back, videos shared on social media show .

Holding up the cellphone responsible for the mishap, the country singer asked the crowd, "Did anybody get that?"

Bryan tossed the phone back to the presumed owner, telling him "it's OK" before jokingly adding, "My lawyer will be calling."

The country singer then grabbed another fan's phone from the audience that taped his fall and presented the video on the screens.

"There I am, there we go, jumping, jumping, hyping the crowd … There it is," he said as he replayed the moment in real time.

"Hey, I need some(thing) viral. This is viral," Bryan joked, before telling the fan to caption the video with a hashtag of his song "Love You, Miss You, Mean It."

Bryan, who is in the midst of his Mind of a Country Boytour, told the Nashville Tennessean earlier this month that "gaining the eyeballs to make people take notice of your artistry" is much more difficult these days.

The struggle to kick off your career and maintain it is why he's enlisted other young country artists to open for him on tour.

"I'm nurturing where younger artists are at in the infancy of their careers and helping them navigate the anticipation of watching a single go up the charts," Bryan said, reminiscing of when he was an opener for Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw almost 20 years ago.

"Paying it forward is pretty special stuff," the "Crash My Party" singer said. "Diving in there and getting artists ready to hopefully mirror the type of success I've had as classy and savvy artists with integrity is important."

Bryan added that he "wasn't a naturally gifted performer" and had to be open to flexibility.

"Because of that focus, I've been able to avoid un-inventing and reinventing (my art and brand). I still feel as inspired and relevant to everything happening at all levels of the music industry as I've ever been," he said.

Luke Bryan took a brutal fall as he performed onstage at the Coast City Country festival in Vancouver, Canada, on Saturday — all because of a fan’s cellphone.

He then asked a crowd member to show him footage. “You’re Snapchatting. You can’t Snapchat this s – – t,” he said.

Despite the 47-year-old country singer falling on his back, he laughed about the incident and asked the audience if anyone caught the moment on camera.

“Hold on. Did anybody get that?” he asked. “It’s OK. Hey, my lawyer will be calling.” He added: “I need some[thing] viral, this is viral, all right.”

“Oh, yes!” he said as he replayed the footage. “All right, here we go again. There I am, there we go … there it is!”

The following day, the “American Idol” judge took to his  Instagram  to post a montage from the first leg of his tour. “Let’s go #MindOfACountryBoyTour,” he wrote.

His Canadian leg of his Mind of a Country Boy Tour ends on April 25, and the next leg of his tour kicks off in Jacksonville, Florida, in June.

Last year, the musician also took a tumble during his Raised Up Right Tour in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 2022, per a video posted to X (formerly Twitter).

Bryan has been making headlines as of late thanks to the ABC singing competition. Earlier this month, he was blamed by Lionel Richie for Katy Perry’s wardrobe malfunction during a live episode.

“Luke knocked the top off, I’ll tell you all the truth,” the  “All Night Long” crooner told “Entertainment Tonight.” “And then Luke spent the rest of the time going, ‘I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry.’ But he was definitely apologetic, and then he tried to put it back together and that looked worse than the whole thing.”

Perry later set the record straight, calling it a “moment for live television.” 

“Yeah, he’s always setting me up,”  Perry  laughed, regarding Bryan. “It wasn’t really a malfunction. It was just a moment for live television.” 

“Every season it seems I rip my pants … I think it’s the physical comedy, the physical expression side of me that just wants to burst at the seams,” she added.

So, who owns that mega yacht docked at Wrightsville Beach?

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - If you haven’t seen it, chances are you’ve heard about it. Skyfall, one of the largest yachts to ever cruise into Wrightsville Beach is the talk of the town.

So, who owns that huge yacht? His name is Roy Carroll.

Carroll, who lives in Greensboro, is the owner of The Carroll Companies, a real estate development firm valued at about $3 billion. He’s no stranger to the Wilmington area. Carroll is the developer of The Avenue , the planned $250 million project located on Military Cutoff Rd. The upscale development will feature luxury living, high-end shops, restaurants and a Westin Hotel. Construction was put on hold because of the pandemic, but is expected to begin this year.

While Skyfall is a luxury charter yacht, Carroll brought it to the Wrightsville Beach Marina for a couple weeks for personal use.

“Skyfall is entertaining friends and family for a couple of weeks prior to departing to the Mediterranean,” Carroll says. “Skyfall will take two and a half to three weeks to reach her destination of Croatia.”

The 191-foot long yacht is booked for charters in the Mediterranean through September. Clearly, it’s going to folks with lots of money. The going rate for a week on Skyfall is $400,000 plus approximately another $100,000 for fuel dockage and tips, according to Cameron Sieradzan, the media director for The Carroll Companies.

Yes, Skyfall is named after the 2012 James Bond movie. The previous owner reportedly paid a pretty penny to use the name. When Carroll purchased the yacht, the name went with it.

“We thought about renaming the yacht, but the name has stuck,” Carroll says. “Plus, we already have the yacht’s theme song.”

Skyfall has 15 crew members and can accommodate up to 14 guests. The yacht features a wine cellar, two hot tubs, a masseuse, two chefs and a helipad that converts to a basketball court.

Carroll also owns Rhino, a 154-foot yacht that will arrive in Wrightsville Beach in a few weeks before heading to New England for the summer.

Skyfall will leave Wrightsville Beach on June 8.

Tragically for boat owners, lake loading docks can be the sight of some unfortunate—and expensive—mishaps. All too often, videos are posted to social media of someone flipping out of a boat and into the water or, in other cases, a vehicle rolling back and turning into a makeshift submarine . However, one recent incident at Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks saw an even more costly result when a luxurious yacht rolled on its side after being hauled out of the water by a semi.

Presumably owned by Fass Fuel Systems president Brad Ekstam, the sizable vessel was sitting atop a flatbed trailer when the catastrophe took place. The transport team had connected the semi to a tractor ahead in order to pull the expensive cargo from the water, but it was improperly secured. When the vehicles started to take a small curve, the load shifted and fell to the ground.

Footage of the accident went viral on Facebook after being shared by a witness Monday afternoon. In the clip, it's clear that there were people aboard the boat when it started to tumble. No injuries have been reported, however.

In essence, it was the incorrect loading and fastening procedure which spelled disaster. Once the trailer dropped a wheel off the pavement, it allowed the boat to slide and the rest was an incredibly pricey blunder.

Fass Fuel Systems is headquartered in Marthasville, Missouri and sells upgraded fueling equipment for modified diesel trucks from Ford, General Motors, and Ram.

Man accused of stabbing another in Fall River held without bail

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WJAR) — A man who is accused of stabbing another near a bus terminal in Fall River was held without bail at his arraignment on Monday.

Rama Burch, 28, is accused of stabbing another man last Friday near the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority Terminal bus terminal at around 3 p.m.

Burch is facing multiple charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, carrying a dangerous weapon and armed assault with the intent to murder.

NBC 10 obtained exclusive video of the incident from Nationwide Alarms surveillance cameras.

The video shows two men fighting on Fourth Street, each with a long object in their hand.

In court on Monday, prosecutors described how Burch continued to stab the victim, climbing on top of him after the victim fell to the ground.

Prosecutors said Burch was the "primary aggressor" in the altercation.

"Following the fight on Fourth Street, he continued to fall over the complaining witness and thrust his weapon towards the complainant. They note in their report that it was evident that Mr. Burch had a plan to execute this assault and when the defendant captured the upper hand in the fight and the complaining witness was laying on the ground, he had the option to stop the assault," a prosecutor said in court on Monday.

Burch's defense said that the police report is based on assumptions.

"They're basing their conclusions and assumptions on two unidentified witnesses," the defense said in court.

The victim in the incident was taken to the hospital and police told NBC 10 Friday night that he was in stable condition.

Burch was ordered held without bail.

He is scheduled for a hearing on May 1.

As you may have heard, on Sunday, May 18 the 90′ expedition style motor yacht Bäden, estimated to have cost $10 million according to some reports, capsized during its launch in Anacortes, Washington. Luckily, nobody was seriously injured in the incident, although several shipyard personnel were onboard the vessel and became trapped when it rolled over.

The incident is under investigation and, as mentioned in the video, it is likely that this phoenix will rise from the ashes.

UPDATE: In a press release issued May 29, Northern Marine addressed the yacht sinking. Here is their full statement:

On Sunday, May 18, 2014, New World Yacht Builders LLC (DBA Northern Marine) suffered a major accident during the launch of its new 90’ expedition yacht, as the yacht capsized onto its port side during the launch and settled to the bottom of the launch area. Fortunately, the experienced master and crew responded to the peril professionally and a ll aboard escaped, with only two employees suffering minor cuts. There was no property damage to the surrounding launch area and potential environmental contamination was negated as a result of instant response to avoid possible fuel leakage, of which there was none. Since the casualty, there has been much speculation as to what happened, often with little or no supporting evidence. Northern Marine is cooperating with the United States Coast Guard in its investigation into incident. Northern Marine has launch more than 35 vessels, ranging from 57 to 151 foot motor yachts, with all of its trawler models having been launched using transport dollies at the same ramp where the accident occurred on the 18th. Northern Marine continues to have complete confidence in its trawler designs, all of which have been tank tested and passed the same United States Coast Guard (USCG) stability standards applied to commercial fishing vessels operating in the North Pacific. Northern Marine trawlers have safely sailed to destinations throughout world, such as the 75-foot Starship that successfully completed a 1000 day, 78,000 mile journey to explore parts the world rarely seen by mankind. Northern Marine believes the 90 foot yacht involved in the launch accident to be no exception. Since the accident, the project naval architect/Professional Engineer has confirmed that the yacht, as designed, had adequate stability with the amount of ballast aboard at the time of launch, provided that “severe heeling moments” were not induced during the launch. Unfortunately, it appears that just such a severe heeling moment did occur during the launch. While investigations as to the cause of the capsizing are continuing, the physical evidence on, and adjacent to, the launch ramp suggests that the dolly carrying the weight of the port stern of the yacht may have suddenly dropped off the edge of the boat ramp during the launch, causing the vessel to experience a sudden list to port from which it could not recover in its light condition for launch. As noted above, the official USCG investigation continues and Northern Marine will cooperate in those investigations to their conclusion. Northern Marine is also working closely with the yacht’s purchaser and their insurance underwriters to address the losses resulting from the accident. Northern Marine wishes to express its heartfelt appreciation for its many employees that contributed their talents to the construction of the yacht.

4:37 PM PT -- Bam Margera just posted video to Instagram showing a portion of the attempts he says he made to call 911 for police assistance last week ... recorded before he ended up taking matters into his own hands, fighting off a threatening stranger.

Bam's obviously frustrated at the lack of response in the video, and claims when no cops showed up, the whole neighborhood told him to go handle it ... and clapped when he was done.

Bam Margera recently found himself throwing down with a stranger -- a fist fight captured on camera, but Bam says he was simply protecting himself and friends ... TMZ has learned.

ICYMI ... the video shows the 'Jackass' star wailing on an unidentified man. The clip's making the rounds online and has many of Bam's fans speculating the face-off has something to do with a tattoo dispute Bam posted about Monday -- he's calling his latest ink job "highway robbery" -- but we're told this is an entirely separate incident.

Bam's manager Mike Quinn tells TMZ … the fight in question happened last week in L.A. -- and was sparked when the stranger threatened to kill Bam and his entourage outside of the property where Bam was staying.

Mike adds, "This individual, who had been pacing nearby for hours relentlessly, and causing disturbances by yelling and overturning trash cans, escalated the confrontation by punching Margera when he stepped outside to smoke."

We're told repeated calls to the police were made, but no assistance arrived. Mike says someone from Bam's camp began recording the incident in response to the aggressive harassment.

Bam tells us ... "I'm not going to be threatened or attacked without defending myself and my friends or people trying to just walk by this idiot, I aimed only to neutralize the threat and ensure the safety of my crew."

His rep tells TMZ the altercation ended swiftly with no injuries, and the aggressor eventually departed without returning.

This update comes a month after Bam was caught on camera getting into a heated argument with girlfriend Dannii Marie , who was concerned about his sobriety at the time.

Never a dull moment in the life of Bam.
