Hello, This is my first post to this lovly page (tho I've been readig allong for a bit) Does it seam like a reasonable idea to design a modern version of the Maxi 77? I meen by keping the basik shapes and "cutting away" half the weight. obwiosly that would lead to a horrible boat in itsself. The core of the question probably boils down to if that kind of hull design with its "overhangs"(?) on the siedes makes any sense? I'm sorry if this was already dicussed, I was unable to fine a thread on it.

Heinrich, do you mean the 'little' sailing yacht designed by Pelle Pettersen, as per this link MAXI 77 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=497 Here is one for sale - 1976 MAXI Maxi 77 sailboat for sale in Outside United States http://www.sailboatlistings.com/view/60792 Or do you mean a large Maxi class sailing yacht, 77' long?
Jea.. thanks for pointing out that gaping information hole. I'm sorry to not having included enough info Yes I meant the one by Pelle Petersen This is the best I've found till now: https://maxiowners.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/maxi_pbo_589_2015.pdf (I think it's a bit too glorifying) Oh and if someone knows a good picture of its crosssection or if there is a name to those sidewards "overhangs"... I didn't manage to find either of those ...
the boat has chines with a horizontal part right after like in the img above but the rest of the hull is curved. also the chines are only dominantly shown in the middle of the boat (~25-75% LWL) (chines are almost exactly on the waterline and don't rise) Is that a reasonable feature in a sailboat or is it only there to get more space in some way? Are they worth consideration and testing or are they just wasted space? Are they correlated to the good sailing qualities of the 77?

This chine - step was for attaching the inner liner.
HJS said: ↑ This chine - step was for attaching the inner liner. Click to expand...
This is not a result but a solution to a need. It was an easy way to place the inner line where they wanted it. It was a simply simplification in the production. That was what Pelle P told us when we asked him.
So would it have been a better boat if instead of that step it would have a mor conventional chine or a U-profile? Or should the topsides be more inwards to kombat the high spability in light winds?

As far as making it lighter, no, I don't see that as a good thing. It looks a bit too light as it is. Compare to a Cal 25, which is older, 500 pounds heavier, 6" shorter, a tad narrower, and rated a fair bit faster. Those chines aren't good or bad. But they are fussy to get right from a design standpoint, and also fussier to sail well. They add roll damping, especially when the ballast is as low as it is in the MAXI 77. I agree with HJS that it is probably primarily a manufacturing convenience, facilitating liner location and a good bond where it is most needed. If building a one-off, there is no reason to do that.

Westerly Nomad, with a make over by Stephen Jones, especially underwater appendages and rudder!

The first boat that I thought of is the Red Fox - would she be sufficiently 'Jonesey'? (She was designed by David Thomas) SailboatData.com - RED FOX 200 Sailboat Here is an old (2002!) YBW thread asking about them - Trailer Sailors: Red Fox Or what about the smaller Hunters (the English ones, not the American) or Parkers?

No I like the look of the Nomad but Stephen Jones could probably work wonders with some airfoil leadkeels and a properrudder instead of a plate steel one!

You could get rid of all the current appendages, and fit two high aspect ratio aerofoil daggerboards like the Red Fox, and modify the transom a bit to have a kick-up high aspect foil rudder? SailboatData.com - NOMAD 22 (WESTERLY) Sailboat Some nice photos of a Nomad here - Westerly Nomad - NOT FOR SALE, details for information only

The best small boat I had was a Westerly Cirrus. Designed by John Butler (I think), it was 22' with a fin keel of 3' 6", and handled like a 30-footer. It would outsail a Galleon 22 or a Hurley 22 and if the children hadn't outgrown the saloon table we'd have kept it for much longer than two years. With a 10hp Volvo, it could have taken us anywhere, but at least we learned a lot.

I had a Westerly Tiger, the larger brother to the Cirrus at 25'. An excellent sailing boat and excellent accomodation for the length.

My favourite (bought once in my 20s and again as a bit of fun on our 40ths) is the Westerly GK24. Sails beautifully and quickly - easily beating much larger boats and has a perfect flat working platform with no raised cabin top or side decks. Ours had an inboard engine which I much preferred to an outboard. The downside is a very low cabin - plenty of places you can sit up comfortably against a back rest but moving around you are very bent over. You get used to it very quickly. Double Vee berth forward slightly bigger than the 31 footer we got later. Separate hanging locker on one side and sea loo on the other between saloon and forecabin. Very wide saloon for a 24 footer round a table, and two dry and secure pilot berths (though we tended to use one as storage and have a Lee cloth on one of the settee berths). Loved it and over the years we sailed it between Lowestoft and La Rochelle, but mostly in the West Country. Sad to give it up 18 months ago but realised I was flying out to our bigger boat whenever I had spare time, so it was all routine maintenance for very little sailing.

It dried out nicely in Tobermory bay but never really made more than 3 knots over the ground. Bombproof though if you can find a good one. Click to expand...

The Kingfishers were designed by an aircraft engineer R Neirop(spelling) He was into solving structural problems with the new material, grp but the basic yacht design left much to be desired,if he could have worked with a n architect might of been better, probably his best boat was the 26 footer.

Examples of sailboats from 1000 euro

Maxi 77

Maxi 77 sailboat today for only € 2500! It is equipped with an outboard 8 hp motor (2008).

Friends! Maxi 77 sailboat today for only € 2500! It is equipped with an outboard 8 hp motor (2008).

Location: Sweden

Length: 7.7 meters Width: 2.5 meters Cabin height: 1.75 meters Draft: 1.4 meters Berths: 5 Galley (kitchen): available Toilet: available

The hull and the wood are in good condition, the upholstery came off a bit (see the photo) but it’s basically easy and inexpensive to fix.

The motor Yamaha 8 hp (2008) is in order, it was stored in a garage during the winters.

There’s a jib furler, all the ropes go to the cockpit, so this beauty is easy to single-hand.

There’s a VHF radio station, autopilot, GPS navigator, 2 solar panels 50 Wt with a controller. New batteries (2020), new sprayhood, new covers and full set of mooring equipment.

Current owners are a family with 2 kids 🙂

In my opinion Maxi 77 is a sailboat for cabotage but as judged by the owner’s opinion it is rather spacious inside for its size.

You can buy this sailboat for 1-2 seasons, get a feel of sailing and sell it at the same price or even at a higher price (you can easily sell it for € 3000-4000) and compensate for small expenses you had.

In fact you will have free sailing in this case 🙂 Besides, you will gain some captain experience. No need to do long passages, you can travel in Sweden and Finland and moor the sailboat in Estonia for winter for € 200 (it is the price for the whole season, not for a month).

In most Baltic countries you don’t need a license to sail a yacht like this so you can only learn some theory online (I will tell you soon how to do it) and ask some experienced captain to teach you for several days. That’s enough for your first self-sustained steps 🙂

Sailing is not as complicated and terrifying as some people say.

The Maxi 68 is a 22.31ft fractional (7/8) sloop designed by Pelle Petterson and built in fiberglass by Börjesson Brothers between 1975 and 1981.

1200 units have been built..

The Maxi 68 is a moderate weight sailboat which is slightly under powered. It is very stable / stiff and has a low righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a day-boat.

Features of the macrostructure and microstructure of uranium dioxide powders are considered. Assumptions are made on the mechanisms of the behavior of powders of various natures during pelletizing. Experimental data that reflect the effect of these powders on the quality of fuel pellets, which is evaluated by modern procedures, are presented. To investigate the structure of the powders, modern methods of electron microscopy, helium pycnometry, etc., are used. The presented results indicate the disadvantages of wet methods for obtaining the starting UO 2 powders by the ammonium diuranate (ADU) flow sheet because strong agglomerates and conglomerates, which complicate the process of pelletizing, are formed. The main directions of investigation that can lead to understanding the regularities of formation of the structure of starting UO 2 powders, which will allow one to control the process of their fabrication and stabilize the properties of powders and pellets, are emphasized.
