Amsterdam is one of those cities that every traveler should have visited at least once in his life. No wonder, every year millions upon millions of tourists flock to the city on the canals to enjoy the flood of sights and cultural offerings. The best way to discover Amsterdam is by taking a boat ride along the canals or a walk along the unique canals. Art lovers will be immediately drawn to one of the world-famous museums, such as the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum or the Van Gogh Museum. Party people will find their happiness in the nightlife and red light district De Wallen. And beer drinkers should by no means miss the Heineken Experience.

The oldest city in the Netherlands exudes original Dutch flair with gabled little houses, small cheese shops and delicacies on the "Grote Markt". In the narrow streets, yesterday and today go hand in hand. Therefore, a visit to the Gothic St. Stevenskerk, including the burial cellar, as well as a stroll along the shopping street "Lange Hezelstraat" should be on the sightseeing plan. With freshly fried Kibbelingen in the wintry Kronenburgerpark can be perfectly paused afterwards.

You should definitely use the stopover in Utrecht to take a look at this beautiful Dutch city at your leisure. Whether you visit the famous Centraal Museum for ancient and modern art or prefer to discover the provincial capital on a leisurely canal cruise from the water - the historic architecture and the many lovingly restored houses will inspire you. In the center of the city, the landmark of Utrecht, the 112 m high Utrecht Cathedral, watches over the city. It was built between 1321 and 1382 and is considered the oldest and highest church tower in the Netherlands. If you climb the 465 steps, you will be rewarded with a fantastic view. If you like it more contemplative, just take a nice stroll through the alleys and typical Nierderland courtyards that Utrecht is known for. Or how about a visit to the colorful flower market? Utrecht is always worth a visit.

The Dutch city of Dordrecht is a former trading city thanks to its location on the water. This past can still be felt in the town today. Be it in the historic city center, at the harbor or even in one of the several museums. Also worth seeing is the "Grote Kerk" and the Augustinian monastery of the 13th century. A walk through Dordrecht is the best way to discover the history of the place.

The port city of Rotterdam is located in the Netherlands and is one of the most interesting places in the world. The modern architecture is significantly involved in this. Among the impressive sights is the horseshoe-shaped market hall with the huge range of goods and the colorful hustle and bustle. In the old harbor with the striking white house, historic ships can be marveled at. For strolling, shopping and partying, the shopping mile Witte de Withstraat is an attraction. The futuristic-looking main station, the bag, also invites to the pub crawl and shopping.

Emmerich is located on the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia and has a beautiful Rhine bridge, but also the Eltenberg, as a local mountain. Still in addition, there is a Rhine promenade for walking and strolling. If you want to know more about the art of coffee, you can visit the Museum of Coffee Technology, which is famous for the city of Emmrich. Nearby is the city of Kleve, which is also very worth seeing with its Swan Castle, the zoo and the historic gardens.

Maastricht is a university city in the extreme south of the Netherlands. The city is characterized by its medieval architecture and lively cultural scene. The cobblestone old town is home to the Gothic Church of St. John (Sint Janskerk) and the Romanesque Basilica of St. Servatius, with its important collection of sacred art. On the banks of the Maas River, which flows through the city center, stands the futuristic Bonnefanten Museum of Fine Art.

Roermond is a city and municipality with 58,806 inhabitants in the Dutch province of Limburg, which lies on the border with Germany and near Belgium. Roermond is best known for the Designer Outlet Center, where there are a lot of special discounts on exclusive brands and selected clothing. Directly connected to the outlet center is the city center of Roermond. Here you can walk relaxed between small boutiques and quaint cafes.

Located in the province of Noord-Holland, Alkmaar in the Netherlands is also known as the cheese city of Holland. You should therefore plan a visit to the traditional cheese market as well as a visit to the cheese museum. Alkmaar also has a historic city center with many shops, cafes and restaurants. You can easily explore Alkmaar on foot. Even more beautiful, however, is a round trip along one of the canals, because similar to Amsterdam, Alkmaar is also known as a canal city. In one of the typical Giethoornse Punter you sail under the numerous bridges and have enough opportunity to discover the many monuments of the city. Make your way to Budapest, where your five-star cruise ship moored in this beautiful city straddling the banks of the glorious Danube.

The dedicated crew are there to welcome you on board, ensuring you settle in and familiarise yourself with this first-class floating hotel that will be your home for your New Year sojourn. You’ll be mesmerized by the beautiful twinkling garlands and luscious décor, a striking backdrop to welcome in 2022. The ship remains here overnight so take in the views of the sparkling lights of the city as you enjoy your first dinner on board.

Budapest is always an atmospheric and fascinating city, but at this time of the year, the muted colours of its magnificent archaic spires and grand domes are especially captivating on the wintry skyline. The twin cities of Buda, built around the hilltop fortress, and Pest, with its wide boulevards, were fought over through the centuries. The Ottomans ruled here for 150 years before being ousted in the late 17th-century, but their legacy lives on in the many thermal baths fed by hot springs, giving rise to Budapest’s other sobriquet – the ‘City of Spas’. After the end of Ottoman rule, Budapest became an imperial city of the Habsburg Empire, attracting great cultural and commercial wealth. The historic and palatial buildings, the superb Roman ruins and exquisite Art Nouveau architecture also provide a truly impressive setting for the acclaimed Yuletide markets.

This morning we enjoy a guided tour of this captivating city which truly does live up to its reputation as the ‘Pearl of the Danube’. Castle Hill is Budapest in microcosm: two churches, seven museums and a theatre among streets and squares with their own special atmosphere and a dramatic view across the river to the awe-inspiring neo-Gothic Parliament. There’s also free time to explore under your own steam, so perhaps take in one of the city’s fine museums or simply wander the markets. Soak up the traditional atmosphere as classical music fills the air along with the delicious smells of spicy gingerbread and peppery goulash – and don’t forget the mulled wine to stave off the winter chill!

Back on board for lunch we slip our mooring and our Danube adventure begins. Wrap up and take to the deck to enjoy a kaleidoscope of winter scenery before stepping back into the warmth of the ship’s inviting lounge. Join new found friends for welcome cocktails before a superb dinner as we sail towards Bratislava.

BRATISLAVA & VIENNA FOR NEW YEARS EVE

After a delicious breakfast, this morning we explore Slovakia’s fast-emerging capital city, Bratislava, on a guided tour. Until recently swathed in the drab uniformity of Communism, the city has rekindled the splendour of its imperial past in its beautifully restored old town. Equally impressive is the imposing white fortress, former seat of the rulers, which enjoys commanding expansive views across the Danube.

You’ll have plenty of free time to explore the cobble-stoned streets of this captivating city – so what’s it to be? Why not head to the regal Primatial Palace with its fabulous Hall of Mirrors? Built in the late 1700s in a classical style, the once home to the archbishop of Esztergom now holds a rare collection of tapestry works from the 17th-century. Alternatively wander the maze of streets, admiring the charming baroque architecture, until you reach the main square. Absorb the café culture with a freshly brewed coffee and maybe sample some local delicacies such as skalický trdelník. This hollow pastry treat comes with the likes of almonds, apricots or walnuts, before being dusted with sugar.

After lunch on board we begin sailing towards Vienna for the New Year’s Eve celebrations which includes an excellent New Year's Eve dinner. As the clock strikes midnight our wonderful crew will serve celebration drinks and canapés as you welcome in the New Year.

VIENNA ON NEW YEAR'S DAY

For many waking in Vienna on New Year's Day will be a highlight of the cruise. The city’s very name provokes images of elegance, fine music, wide boulevards, Baroque architecture and a rich tapestry of peoples who were drawn here from all corners of Europe. For 200 years until the First World War, Vienna was the cultural centre of Europe and many of the showpiece buildings, galleries, aristocratic palaces and magnificent churches you see today were built to reflect its imperial status.

The city was the seat of the Habsburg emperors and home to some of the world’s finest classical composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and of course, a whole family of Strausses.

In this capitvating city, there’s also the colossal Hofburg, the former royal court that is now home to a collection of museums, the Crown Jewels and the Spanish Riding School and the Vienna Boys’ Choir. Then there are the lavish Imperial Apartments and an outstanding collection of relics of the Holy Roman Empire. There has also been a Yuletide market in Vienna since the Middle Ages and today the markets held over the festive period sell a huge range of seasonal gifts and mouth-watering treats. This morning we enjoy a tour in the company of a local guide who will offer insights into why Vienna is one of Europe’s great capitals, now proudly embellished in winter sparkle.

There will also be time to browse the stalls of the markets where the irresistible smell of roasting chestnuts fills the air. Alternatively retreat to the refined yet cosy elegance of a traditional Viennese café for a steaming hot chocolate and a tempting pastry.

After lunch on board we visit the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace. Once the summer residence of the Hapsburgs, this former royal residence now houses a range of world-class museums and galleries. Your included entrance and audio guide allows you into the dazzling state rooms, with their wealth of priceless artworks and the family’s impressive royal carriages. The palace also hosts a superb Yuletide market, specialising in traditional handicrafts and nostalgic toys.

No visit to Vienna is complete without a live musical experience and this evening we have arranged truly the ‘icing on the cake’, a classical recital on board.

We have sailed overnight, you draw back the curtains to see the early morning mist rising over this gentle pastoral landscape, draped in a blanket of glistening frost. Seek out a good vantage spot in the lounge, sink into a comfy chair and watch this lovely slideshow of winter wonderland scenery effortlessly gliding by – what could be more relaxing! A sumptuous brunch will be served, giving you the perfect opportunity to mark the New Year and share your favourite moments.

This afternoon head up to the sun deck to enjoy the bracing river breeze as the Captain skilfully navigates our return course to the Hungarian capital. For the more energetic, perhaps a visit to the ship’s fitness centre to keep up your usual routine or start something new for 2022.

Our ship will be moored right in the heart of Budapest this evening so why not take a stroll before the magnificent Captain’s Dinner. A lively Hungarian folklore show draws this glorious day to a close, giving you time to bid farewell to your travelling companions and reflect on all the wonderful places you have experienced on this most magical of cruises.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such option offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!” wrote (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as this offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This website (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other website sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center: Hotel Ukraine and Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
