The 371-foot long Le Grand Bleu , one of the largest private yachts in the world, arrived in Newport on Tuesday, July 11th.
Le Grand Bleu was built for US telecommunications baron John McCaw and has been owned by Eugene Shvidler, a Russian-American oil businessman, since June 2006. She was built at the Bremer Vulkan yard in Bremen, Germany, and was launched in 2000.
Shvilder owns the Château Thénac vineyard in France, a $37 million home in Belgravia in London, a $14.5 million home in Aspen and has a network of $1.3 billion.
The yacht has a crew of 65 and carries a veritable arsenal of tenders and water toys, both on her aft decks and in her extensive below-deck garage, where there is a large aquarium. Her watercraft includes a 73-foot Dubois-designed sailing yacht, Bellatrix; a 68-foot meter Sunseeker motor yacht; two 11 36-foot, 60-knot Buzzi sports boats; and a landing craft to carry a 4×4 Land Rover used for excursions ashore and a helicopter.
The boat is currently at anchor in Narragansett Bay, just off of Goat Island in front of Belle Mer. It is unknown how long she will be spending in Newport.
Le Grand Bleu is the 24th largest private yacht in the world, according to Wikipedia .
The largest private yacht in the world? That would be Azzam at 591 feet, a yacht that is no stranger to Newport.

Top 10 largest explorer yachts in the world
Helipads. Dive centres. Ice-breaking hulls. Submersibles. What makes an explorer yacht? True to their name, explorer yachts are well equipped to take on adventurous journeys to the most far-flung places in the world. Equipped with a long-range and vast storage capacity for food, fuel and water to enable weeks at sea, expedition yachts are increasingly popular with owners wanting to leave behind the popular Mediterranean and Caribbean cruising grounds for more challenging adventures. We round up the top 10 largest explorer yachts in the world, starting with a new entry from German shipyard Lürssen...

Spread across an impressive eight decks, Solaris was designed by Australian designer Marc Newson and hit the water for the first time at the German yard in February 2021. More about this yacht
More stories, octopus | 126.18m.
Originally built yacht for the late Paul Allen, one of the founders of Microsoft, Octopus is one of the most famous explorer yachts in the world. The yacht has the capacity for two helicopters at the same time, with landing pads on the aft deck and foredeck. The helipad on the aft deck also has a hangar to store the helicopter away in big seas.
Octopus also has an internal dock, which is perfect for storing the toys that every explorer yacht should have. When the dock is filled with water a 20 metre submarine and a tender of similar size are able to float in and out of their chocks. Once they are secure the water is pumped out before the yacht gets underway.
Paul Allen and the crew of Octopus used the yacht as part of an eight year search for a sunken ship. In 2015, they discovered the long-lost wreck of Japanese ship Musashi , which sunk during the Second World War.

Kleven finished the yacht's technical build in Norway in December 2016, after which Ulysses was sent to Bremerhaven for interior and external completion under the project management of Dörries Maritime.
Ulysses is equipped with a heli-hangar on the top deck, a Bell 429 helicopter, and a fleet of high-speed and day-cruising tenders including a 21 metre Princess 68 stowed inside the well deck. Inside, her huge 18 metre beam is able to accommodate up to 66 guests.

The yacht was later sold to Roman Abramovich's close friend, Farkhad Akhmedov in April 2014. The new owner sent her to the yard in Germany for an extensive 14-month refit costing €50 million and including around 130 jobs. Sporting exterior design by Frank Neubelt, Luna is famous for a low aft deck that sacrificed interior volume in favour of more space for sunbathing. The swimming pool takes centre stage and made headlines for being the largest ever seen on a superyacht at the time of delivery. Elsewhere, the yacht features two tender garages, a gym and an expansive beach club wrapping around a spa, with a steam bath, plunge pool and sauna. Two helipads sit on the upper deck while the entire lower deck is dedicated to the crew. Luna is ice-classed and built to the highest possible standards, allowing her to travel to the far reaches of the world's oceans.

Phone Mogul Throws Bride A Lavish Bash
Difficult to keep track of John Elroy McCaw Jr., one of the billionaire McCaw brothers who sold Seattle-based Cellular One to AT&T.
Last week, McCaw's name surfaced on a state Court of Appeals decision. (McCaw had unsuccessfully appealed a decision nearly doubling support payments for his three daughters from a former marriage.)
On the heels of that news came glowing accounts of McCaw's Nov. 11 marriage to 28-year-old international model Gwendolyn Hoyt. The 47-year-old cell-phone mogul invited 350 guests to a wedding reception held at a New York nightspot.
McCaw spent an estimated $1 million on the party, flying in kegs of Guinness from Ireland and hiring song-and-dance man Tommy Tune for an opening act. Taking the stage after dinner was Stevie Wonder, who belted out three hours of hits. McCaw and Hoyt popped a bottle of champagne while Wonder sang "Ribbon in the Sky," the couple's favorite song.
One guest said, "It's no Pygmalion thing. They were introduced by mutual friends." The bride's mother is socialite Pamela (Baby) de Selliers; her uncle is John Bryan, former financial adviser to Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. (Tabloid readers may remember Bryan as the duchess' toe-sucking companion.)
State of status: Status differs from one subculture to the next, a phenomenon explored in last Sunday's New York Times.
Seattle author Sherman Alexie reported that, for Native Americans, status means fancy footwork. He said, "Tribal dancers are more than just cool; they're figures of respect, admired for their reverence of Indian traditions."
Seattle advice columnist Dan Savage said status for gay men is a child. Savage bragged, "My little status item spat up on me this morning."
What The Times didn't examine was what status means in various regions. In Seattle, status isn't the same as in New York or Miami.
Some top Seattle status symbols:
-- An unwashed blue Volvo station wagon.
-- An Internet connection at your cabin in Mazama.
-- An extra-large blue camping tarp.
-- An organic slug killer.
-- Microsoft stock options.
-- Birthday greetings from the Waiting for the Interurban statues.
-- Reservations for Table 24 at Stars restaurant in Pacific Place.
-- A birth certificate from Swedish hospital.
-- Relatives buried in Lake View Cemetery.
Sweet success: You know you've made it when your research project ends up on a candy bar. University of Washington astronomy professor Donald Brownlee's Stardust project is one of nine NASA missions featured on Nestle's Crunch bars.
The seven-year mission that launches in February will send a spacecraft to Comet Wild 2 to gather dust. The candy wrapper shows the craft. One difference: The real spacecraft isn't stamped with the word "Crunch."
Water world: Stan and Bunny McKnight report spotting a boat moored at the Des Moines Marina with a catchy name: "Mutual Fun$."

Expedition Yachts Demand Growing in Superyacht Industry
Cool piped jazz floats over the luxury icebreaker superyacht Ulysses as Brian Carver wheels the 5-story megayacht away from the sound of Cristal Champagne corks firing along the Monaco coast.
“This is not a marina ship,” says Carver, captain of the 196′, 49 million euro expedition vessel that can tackle polar waters as easily as lay anchor for months along the uppermost reaches of the Amazon River. “ Ulysses is a luxury yacht designed to avoid what’s happening on land.”
The decommissioned U.S. Navy submarine lashed to the foredeck provides an underwater getaway for six people.
Other isolationist perks aboard the ship named after the Ancient Greek mariner who got lost in a sea of troubles include a retractable helicopter pad and a 180,000 gallon diesel tank that costs around US$700,000 to fill. That’s ample fuel for more than 6,000 nautical miles, and enough power to ensure the yacht’s four quantum-zero stabilizers allow guests to continue playing pool in a storm and not tilt the Batman pinball machine.
Those interested in this example of the future of luxury superyachting should contact billionaire owner Graeme Hart, managing director of the private-equity firm Rank Group Ltd. in Auckland, New Zealand.
Elite Armada
It has been three years since the collapse of Lehman Brothers triggered the worst fiscal crisis following the Great Depression and a gust of fear among the armada of giga-yachtsmen who each September sail into the Monaco Yacht Show to preen and prance their monstrous vessels for sale. Time and Europe’s multibillion-dollar credit calamity have not been kind to them.
Everything anchored in Monaco was on fire sale. The pitch aboard My Trust, a floating dockside city state selling at a distressed 23.95 million euros, includes a black-and-white loop video of Dean Martin singing happy songs from the 1940s. The tune that wafts from a passing 120-foot luxury ketch in need of a paint job is Shirley Temple chirping “On the Good Ship Lollipop,” an anthem from the Great Depression.
There are 450 private vessels that bow-to-stern stretch beyond 200 feet, according to the Camper & Nicholsons 2011 Superyachting Index. That doesn’t mean their owners have found Peppermint Bay. As Patrick Coote tells it, the only sailors with the bankroll to keep the luxury-yacht market afloat are Russian, Chinese, Brazilian and old-money Europeans, and most of them want to navigate away from marina life.
“An ice-class megayacht is the solution,” says Coote, marketing director of Fraser Yachts. “New buyers want the ability to smack into any sort of iceberg and not do a Titanic.”
Discreet Players
For the middlemen charged with making the sale in treacherous post-Lehman waters, discretion is often more important than vanity.
“Many owners don’t want to be seen near their expensive toys,” says Pascal Wiscour-Conter, chief executive officer of ItMovesIt SA, a Monaco-based software company that specializes in managing the between 20,000-to-160,000 housekeeping documents annually required to keep private Gulfstreams in the air and superships at sea.
“Explorer yachts like Ulysses cater to the new expectations of high net-worth individuals in a troubled global economy,” says Mr. Wiscour-Counter, who has managed three explorer megayachts during his 20-year nautical career. “An ice-class vessel is more luxurious and more anonymous than any bling yacht. They’re also bigger inside, which means they can carry more stuff and avoid the need for a ghost ship.”
Although Mr. Wiscour-Conter says the financial chaos of 2008 compelled the rich to downsize their vessels and not attract the attention of tax authorities or judicial investigators looking to seize potentially questionable assets, it didn’t mean they’d stop pulling into port on a whim to buy a Picasso or a Porsche.
“We had a client on a 115′ luxury yacht,” Mr. Wiscour-Conter says. “Three days into the voyage, the client had already berthed at three ports and bought 2 million euros worth of merchandise. But the boat was too small to carry the load, so we had to arrange for a ghost ship and crew to follow with the client’s shopping.”
Luxury icebreakers avoid the need for illusion.
“These yachts have no appeal for the guy who turns up stern-to-dock so people can watch him eating caviar,” says Burgess Yachts CEO Jonathan Beckett, who marquees his fleet of 150 vessels as “the superyacht superpower.”
Mr. Beckett accepts a cappuccino from a steward aboard Cakewalk, Burgess’s 280′ superstar and on sale for 152 million euros. Cakewalk is a mighty ship. Yet the only ice she can crush comes from the lounge bar.
Explorer Yachts
“Someone will eventually buy Cakewalk,” Mr. Beckett says. “But the future is the self-sufficient explorer yacht, with fuel tanks and provision stores for owners who are allergic to marinas.”
Mr. Beckett leans back on the sofa and lays out the monetary dynamics of 21st-century superyachting: “There are no more than 25 people in the world who can afford a yacht in the 200 million-to-300 million euro range,” he says. “It’s more interesting in the 100 million-to-200 million euro range because we have hundreds of potential buyers.”
Fraser Yachts CEO Hein Velema adds the caveat emptor. “I’m a little nervous about the global economic situation,” he says. “Americans are not ready to commit to buying a yacht.”
Yet Mr. Beckett says the dearth of U.S. cash on deck for Burgess superyachts in excess of 150 feet is more than made up for by the Chinese market. “There are right now 2,500 superyachts in the world,” Mr. Beckett says. “And there are right now 10,000 people in China with the money to buy one.”
Luxury Refit
Mr. Beckett reckons some 100 explorer yachts have set sail since Lehman sunk. “More of them are on the way,” he says. “They’re a deal, particularly for Americans. We can purchase a used commercial ice-class or similar vessel for, say, 750,000 euros and then give it a 30 million euro refit into a luxury vessel with more decks, head space and range than anything on display in Monaco. That’s the trending global market.”
Luxury-icebreaker extras on offer in Monaco include the Jetlev Flyer, a self-contained 129,000 euro carbon-fiber backpack that uses a 225-horsepower water nozzle to launch passengers on a 180-minute, 35 kilometer-an-hour journey at an altitude of 33 feet. Escape pods provide serenity. The discerning prefer the US$60,000 SeaJet Capsule, which resembles a gigantic escargot with a propulsion system. It lets passengers “look cool, fast and rich at the same time,” says SeaJet designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini.
Modern trinkets do little to enhance the 164-foot Shandor. Originally built in 1986 for Fiat SpA Chairman Gianni Agnelli, the 8 million euro refit vessel, with a 100,000-liter fuel tank and a range of 5,600 nautical miles, is Jurassic in comparison to the 370′ icebreaker Le Grand Bleu. Built for U.S. cellular-network tycoon John McCaw Jr. in 2000 for US$90-million, Mr. Beckett 4 years later brokered the ship to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich for an undisclosed amount.
Abramovich Gift
In 2006, Mr. Abramovich presented Le Grand Bleu to his friend Eugene Shvidler as a gift, leaving the oil tycoon’s Barcelona-based Ocean Group fleet without a luxury expedition vessel.
“Abramovich has the biggest luxury yacht in the world, the 557′ Eclipse ,” Mr. Wiscour-Conter says of the ship that’s 176 feet shorter than the Lusitania and cost an estimated 800 million euros to build. Unlike the fabled paquebot that fell victim to a German U-boat off Ireland in 1915, Eclipse features an array of torpedo and missile defense systems.
“Le Grand Bleu changing hands is a significant development in the competitive world of superyacht owners,” Mr. Wiscour-Conter explains. “Now the only cost-effective way to out-Abramovich Abramovich is to own a luxury icebreaker.”
Jet Eurocopter
The superyacht company Palmer Johnson Yachts has risen to the occasion. It’s called the PJ World, a 269-foot luxury ice crusher that’s six stories tall and priced at 135 million euros, not including the 35 million euro all-weather jet-powered Eurocopter. The steel-hull vessel, which can travel more than 10,000 nautical miles on a tank of gas, has a 200- square-meter master suite, a country-club-sized swimming pool, eight guest cabins and a 29-member crew.
“PJ World launches next year and we don’t yet have a buyer,” says Palmer Johnson salesman Mauricio Weiszberger. “We took a big risk and built her on spec to capture the market that’s on the horizon.”

Who's who among force india's new owners, lawrence stroll's involvement in the force india buyout grabbed the headlines - but there are other big business names in the consortium that made the bid..
Photo by: Manuel Goria / Motorsport Images
It’s been known for some time that Lawrence Stroll was trying to buy the Force India f1 team, and given his credentials and contacts in the paddock it was no surprise when he was announced as the winning bidder for the Silverstone-based team.
However, the Canadian billionaire is not the only person involved, as he is the head of a consortium that includes several of his closest associates and friends. Their combined CVs certainly look impressive, and clearly helped to convince administrator Geoff Rowley that his bid was a serious one.
Stroll is believed to be not just the driving force behind the deal, but also the main investor, with the others putting in much smaller amounts.
However, their presence serves to divert attention from Stroll, who inevitably is sensitive to suggestions that he has bought the team purely to further the career of son Lance, rather than as a practical business investment.
So who are the men who now own a stake in the team?

Andre Desmarais (Canada): The Desmarais family is the seventh-wealthiest in the country, according to the Canadian Business website listing – which also logs Stroll at number 55.
The family company, Power Corporation, was built up by the late Paul Desmarais. Andre, who is his younger son, is the deputy chairman, president and co-CEO. The company is mainly involved in financial services, but has interests in communications and energy, and has small holdings in companies as diverse as Adidas, Total and Pernod Ricard.
It is known for its strong political links. Indeed, Andre’s wife France is the daughter of Jean Chretien, Prime Minister of Canada from 1993 to 2003, having previously served on Power’s board.
Jonathan Dudman (Great Britain): Dudman is the head of Monaco Sports and Management, a company that describes itself as “a management advisory firm that typically serves high-net-worth clients and their families.” MSM began life in Monaco as part of IMG, and acquired its current identity in 2010.
Dudman works with many celebrities and sportsmen, essentially looking after their financial and legal interests, and Stroll is a long-time client. Among his motor racing connections, he was previously a director of Jody Scheckter’s Laverstoke Farm business.
John Idol (USA): Idol joined Polo Ralph Lauren in 1984, becoming group president and divisional COO. He was chosen as CEO of Donna Karan in 1997, taking over from the founder. He left after a merger with LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton in 2001.
He then became a co-owner and CEO of fashion brand Michael Kors since 2003, subsequently working closely with Stroll as they built up the company. Among his high profile moves was the acquisition of shoe brand Jimmy Choo. In 2016-’17 Michael Kors was a sponsor of McLaren.

John McCaw Jr (USA): McCaw is the third-oldest of four brothers who made their fortunes in telecommunications, having sold the McCaw Cellular concern built by their father John to AT&T for $12.6bn in 1994. Oldest brother Bruce has strong motorsport connections – he owned the PacWest Champ Car team, which operated from 1993 to 2002 and employed the likes of Mauricio Gugelmin, Mark Blundell and Scott Dixon.
John Jr has focussed on other sports, and was previously a part owner of the Vancouver Canucks (NHL), the Vancouver Grizzlies (NBA) and the Seattle Mariners (MLB). However, like brothers Bruce and Craig, he too has a fascination with classic cars, and has an incredible collection that includes a Ferrari 250GTO.
Michael de Picciotto (Switzerland): Picciotto was previously executive managing director of Geneva-based Union Bancaire Privée, founded by his uncle Edgar. He left that role in 2016 to become vice chairman of the supervisory board of Hamburg-based Engel & Völkers, which is basically an upscale real estate agent dealing in top-of-the-range properties worldwide, as well as yachts and planes.
The company says that de Picciotto has “a well established reputation as a creative and experienced banker, familiar with the contingencies and challenges of the contemporary financial world.”
Silas Chou (Hong Kong): From a wealthy Hong Kong family with extensive interests in textiles, the 72-year-old Chou has been a close associate of Stroll for three decades, focussing on the Far East-based manufacturing side of various fashion businesses.
Together they built Tommy Hilfiger into a global brand, with Chou serving as chairman, and subsequently did the same with Michael Kors, with help from John Idol. Chou has also been involved with the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Pepe Jeans and Esprit.

Zhukovsky International Airport is a new airport in Moscow, Russia. Also known as Ramenskoye Airport, it was opened in May 2016 as the fourth international airport in the city. It is constructed within the existing Ramenskoye aerodrome in Moscow Oblast in Zhukovsky, 43km from central Moscow.
The airport has an initial capacity to accommodate two million passengers a year, which will be increased to 12 million with further expansion by 2020.

Contrary to the existing airports in the city, including Domodedovo International Airport , Sheremetyevo Airport and Vnukovo Airport, the Zhukovsky airport will be open for classic and low-cost airlines.
International holding group Avia Solutions Group and Russian state corporation Rostec formed a joint venture (JV) called Ramport Aero for the construction and development of the new airport. By investing approximately RUR1bn ($30m), Avia Solutions owns up to a 75% share in the JV.
Project background
Moscow is a major air transportation hub in Russia with three airports serving millions of passengers a year. The airports have, however, reached their maximum passenger handling capacity and are expected to receive 96.5 million passengers in 2020.
Even after expanding the existing facilities, there would be a capacity deficit of ten million. Moreover, the existing airports cannot accommodate low-cost carriers. As a result, a new airport with a capacity to serve 12 million passengers a year for both traditional and low-cost air travel segment was planned.
Zhukovsky airport development project
The Zhukovsky Airport development is planned to be completed in phases. During the recently opened first phase, a new 15,000m² passenger terminal with a capacity to handle two million passengers a year has been constructed. Also constructed are short-term and long-term parking facilities with a capacity for 200 to 300 vehicles respectively.
To be completed in 2017, the second phase will further increase the airport capacity by six million passengers a year by developing a new passenger terminal. A new 14,000m² cargo terminal of will also be constructed during the phase.
The third phase will see the construction of a third terminal with a capacity of 12 million passengers and will be completed by the end of 2020. Other facilities to be constructed during the phase include hotels, and commercial and office centres.
Other future developments at the airport include construction of a 5,000m² cargo handling terminal, a multi-storey car park, an aircraft maintenance centre, and other hotels and office spaces.
In addition, a 100,000m² shopping and entertainment mall will be developed, which will be connected to the terminal to ensure constant flow of passengers and visitors to the shopping centre.
Baggage handling
The airport is equipped with the most modern baggage handling systems to ensure fast and uninterrupted service for the passengers. The equipment is in compliance with the requirements of aviation security and airport operations in the Russian Federation and to the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
The maximum capacity of the airport is projected to be 1,080 passengers an hour, which will require the baggage handling system to process 3,600 items an hour.
The airport features a single runway, which was constructed from one of the two landing strips at the Ramenskoye airfield. At 5.5km, the runway is the longest in Europe.
Contractors involved with the Zhukovsky International Airport
Lithuania-based Vilniaus Architekturos Studija (VAS) and the Russian company Stroipodryad were appointed as the designers for the new airport project. Using a low-cost airport model, the companies have designed the facility. While VAS was involved in the designing process, the other partner has overseen the project’s compliance with local regulations.
The contract to supply and install baggage handling systems and related equipment was awarded to WeKey Consulting. The firm supplied all the necessary inspection equipment and explosive detection systems.
The total allotted budget for the project between 2014 and 2019 is RUR7bn ($210m). The first and second phases will cost approximately RUR5bn ($150m).
