The best Hobie Sailing info on the web

I’m no sailing expert, although I sometimes play one on the internet. You may have seen me as the Roving Reporter for JoyriderTV’s “Show us your Cat” series . My son’s Sea Scouts Ship has been fortunate to receive a few Hobie Cat sailboats as donations to use in their efforts to teach young men and women seamanship and watercraft safety.

I have found myself scouring the interwebs for useful information to help me get up to speed to help with repairs and instruction. This page is where I post the sailing and Hobie info that I find most useful in this journey. Unless otherwise noted, none of this info is my original work… just stuff that I’ve found online and archived on Gear Report so it will be easy to find and won’t disappear any time soon. Most are documents that I have downloaded and posted. A few are links to other websites.

The Hobie 14 with just the main sail and no jib can be one of the most challenging boats to sail. Tacking can be seriously difficult without the help of the jib to help pull you around. Here is a video from Joe showing some experimentation with a series of tacks on the H14, and lessons learned:

  • Take one 4” PVC Schedule 40 cleanout TEE. (A cleanout TEE has slip connection on the straight thru and threads on the 90 degree.)
  • Cut the straight thru section in half thru the centerline on the pipe section. This will be the cradle seat for the mast.
  • Line the pipe section half will outdoor carpet.
  • Cut the section TEE on the straight thru section to remove a wedge section about 2 inches (See the photos for location.)
  • Using a threaded plug connect the two TEEs so that they align at 90 degrees.
  • Attach bungees as desired to secure the mast to cradle and cradle to the crossbar. “

Hobie racing… Back in the Day

Early adopters.

Way back in the mid-1980’s my Father purchased a brand new Hobie Cat 18 sailboat. He studied everything about the boat, sailing techniques, race rules, etc. and needed someone to go sail with him. Since I was the right age (mid-teens) and size, I often ended up as the designated Crew. I could get around a bit on the Hobie, and was OK at following orders, but never really “learned to sail”. That Hobie 18 was FAST! And the wings really helped to get more weight outboard for more leverage to keep the boat upright… which meant MORE SPEED.

Hobie racing

That made the Hobie 18 a great boat to enter in local Regattas. I don’t remember exactly how many races we entered or how we did. But I remember being both nervous and excited. I don’t think we ever won any races, as we were fairly inexperienced sailors. But we had fun. Mostly…

Scary fast!

To be honest, the Hobie 18 scared the bejeezus out of me. I did OK though… until I flipped it. Once I had flipped it my confidence was shot and I gave up on it. I know… pathetic. I can see that now. My Dad saw it then, as you might imagine… but I was young and dumb. I hate that with me too scared to sail with him, he had to give up on the Hobie and buy a powerboat. However, the extended family has enjoyed that powerboat (a SeaRay 210 Sundeck) for MANY years since then.

Sailing Instruction: Modern Tips for Sailing the Hobie 16 Catamaran

Added by damonAdmin on Feb 05, 2004 - 11:13 PM

First the disclaimer: We’re not the best Hobie 16 sailors in the country but we have won a few events and we were 4th at the 2003 Continentals. The following isn’t the gospel truth just the best we’ve been able to figure out so far.

Crew Weight: The minimum allowable class weight, for adult racing, is 285 lbs combined helm and crew. Most teams try to be right at minimum weight. I think 300 lbs is more ideal over a wide variety of conditions. Liza and I are at minimum but we have trouble when the wind kicks up over 20 knots.

At The Beach: Tuning a Hobie 16 is primarily a balance between mast rake and leech tension. Because the boat doesn’t have centerboards the idea is to rake the mast back as far as possible to get the sail plan over the rudders. This causes weather helm and effectively makes the rudders work twice as hard to compensate for the missing centerboards. The limiting factor is the leech tension in the main and jib. If you rake back too far the main blocks, and jib blocks, will touch before the sail is pulled tight enough.

The new jibs are cut higher at the clew, making jib set up easier. Put the tack of the jib in the middle of the adjuster plate. This will keep the jib high enough and help to make sure the blocks don’t touch. The rake is ideally set so that there is enough mainsheet tension when the blocks are touching.

The class standard for measuring rake is to take the main halyard to one of the bows and place it at the top of the screw that attaches the bridle. With the halyard pulled taught from the top of the mast, mark the spot on the halyard that touches the screw. Then walk the halyard back to the transom of the same hull and mark the spot that measures to the bottom corner of the transom - this should be shorter than the previous measurement. The distance between the two marks is the measured rake. A good starting rake is 16 inches. This is as far up as we go. Make a mark on the halyard and a corresponding mark on the mast for reference.

We put our shrouds in the bottom hole. This allows us to pull the mast all the way forward with the rig fairly tight. A looser rig will let the mast fall to the side, opening up the jib slot. For this reason we don’t mind letting it go loose as we rake back when it’s windy. If your mast doesn’t want to rotate you may be too tight on the shrouds.

The rudders on a Hobie 16 should be toed in 1/8 of an inch. To set up the rudders, support the transom so that the rudders can be lowered. With a pencil and a ruler draw a line from the pivot bolt to the lowest point on the rudder. With a T-square draw a line across the rudder and perpendicular to the centerline. We do this at the widest spot on the rudder. Do the same for both rudders. Measure the distance separating the two leading edges where they meet the horizontal line. Do the same for the trailing edge. The distance between the two leading edges should be 1/8 inch closer together. Spending some time to get this measurement right will make a noticeable boat speed difference.

If you’re sailing in a round robin style regatta there is a quick and dirty way to take the measurement on the beach. With the rudders up you should be able to sight down both trailing edges and line them up with the screw on the corresponding bow.

In light air you can add additional rake and get the main 2 blocked but if the wind picks up before you can get to the halyard you will be extremely slow. The gamble is usually not worth the benefit.

In wavy conditions the jib slot should be more open than indicated.

Initial de-powering is done with the traveler instead of the rake. This is done because you have the ability to pull the traveler back up if the wind drops off. As in light air getting caught with too much rake is very slow. You will know you are too raked because you will be pointing ten degrees lower than everyone else.

Moving the jib lead out is important as it gets windy but even though it’s hard to adjust while going up wind you will not be too slow if you get stuck with it too far out.

Lift the windward rudder while double trapping up wind. This makes tacking complicated and I haven’t found it to be faster for us yet but all the best international guys do it.

Weather helm is good on a 16. The main is sheeted tighter than on most other boats for this reason. You will have to get a feel for how much tighter.

We try not to ease the main sheet when it gets windy as it makes the main fuller and moves the center of effort forward. Liza holds the traveler so it’s at my waist. When I see a puff coming I can quickly grab it and let it down a few inches.

Make sure you have a wind indicator on the bridle. The rule of thumb is: keep the apparent wind at 90 0 . This is the fast way to sail most of the time, especially in flat water. As it gets windier and waves start to build sometimes you can build some more apparent wind and keep the indicator forward of 90. If heading up gets you over the wave it’s usually worth it to do so.

Don’t bother to adjust the outhaul. Ease the downhaul if you really want to. Lift the windward rudder. Don’t worry if the mast will not stay rotated. You can hold it in the rotated position but, believe it or not, it isn’t going to make you go any faster.

Concentrate on steering and jib trim. Keeping the boat at the best VMG angle and sailing with good jib trim is the key to going fast. In light air the crew should hold the jib out, effectively moving the jib lead off the boat. Crew’s should remember to control the twist when they are holding the jib out. If the jib is too twisty pull directly down on the sheet. Keep the jib round by pushing the clew towards the tack.

Think about the wind strength well before you round the leeward mark. Down wind is the only time you can adjust your mast rake.

This may be the hardest part of racing a Hobie 16, especially for a dinghy convert like myself. Do the roll tack thing. Get the video Rick White's Total Boat Handling it helped me a lot. Also, check out David Halls roll tack article from “On The Wire”.

In light air the jib gets stuck on the main halyard. This will destroy your tack. Crews need to practice helping the jib around in the light stuff.

In heavy air make sure the crew stays forward in the tack. It’s easy to pop a wheelie in the 16 and you can flip it over backwards if it’s windy enough.

The Hobie 16 is a simple boat. With some practice it should be easy to get in the ballpark on the speed game. After that it’s time to go racing, tack on the headers get in the puffs and don’t flip over.

Small Boat Spotlight - Hobie 16

Small Boat Spotlight : The Everlasting Hobie 16

By: Pat Reynolds Learn To Sail , Sailboats , Sailing Fun

When you stop and think about what types of boats are most responsible for luring people into the wonderful world of sailing the Hobie 16 has got to be in the top three on the list. For children of the 1970s and 80s this sexy little catamaran seemed to be sitting on a trailer in every other backyard.

What most simply call the Hobie 16 is an iconic sailboat that is considered by many to be the most popular catamaran in the world. In the beginning, the H16 was marketed as more than some ordinary sailboat that could be easily trailered, rigged and beached. Instead Hobie Alter put forth the idea that to sail this boat was to be part of a lifestyle – the “ Hobie way of life .” Instead of making the pitch that it was a fast fun little boat that could make your summer a little brighter, Alter suggested that sailing a Hobiecat was a reflection of an energized youth with a dash of good-natured rebellion.

There have been over 135,000 of these boats produced since 1969 and they are the second largest boat fleet in existence. The H16 is simple to rig (especially on a beach) and pretty easy to sail, although capsizing is par for the course and regarded by some as fun. Once launched, the full batten main and relatively lightweight construction (320 pounds) makes the boat quite fast and responsive. The Hobie folks state the max speed is nearly 24-knots and there are plenty of Hobie sailors who will agree and verify. At speeds like that you can bet whoever is sailing the boat will be utilizing another element Hobie sailors love – the dual trapeze setup they are equipped with. In 10-15 knots of breeze, skipper and crew can hike their entire bodies out on the wires simultaneously, suspended above the water and as the hull begins to rise, life becomes very sweet. Any beach cat sailor will tell you that sailing along at 15-knots, hiked out and flying a hull is one of the most blissful feelings known to man.

The other very positive aspect of the Hobie 16 is the cost of entry. It remains one of the more inexpensive roads into the world of sailing. A 2017 Hobie 16 is just over $11,000 and that’s ready to sail. Lots of sailboats have a base price and then silly little extras like… sails!! And if the used market is explored, a ready to sail H16 can be picked up for under $1,000, which is pretty incredible.

And lastly, Hobie 16s are also versatile. They’re small enough to throw in the backyard next to the garage without causing marital dismay but once rigged and ready, they’re hearty enough to do some serious coastal sailing. While many Hobie sailors head out for a few hours for some low-key albeit amped up daysailing, others like to actually get in the surf, hit the adrenaline button and use the boat as a surfboard.

It’s a design that has definitely stood the test of time (for good reason) and one that is positive for the sport. The cost to fun ratio is right where we like to see it, so if you don’t have a boat and don’t want to spend a fortune – grab a Hobie 16 and getcha sail on!

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Between a Sailboat or Catamaran for Your Sailing Adventures

C hoosing between a sailboat and a catamaran for your sailing adventures is a significant decision that depends on various factors, including your sailing preferences, experience level, budget, and intended use. Here's an ultimate guide to help you make an informed decision:

1. Sailing Experience:

  • Sailboats: Typically require more skill and experience to handle, especially in adverse weather conditions. Ideal for sailors who enjoy the traditional feel of sailing and are willing to invest time in learning and mastering the art.
  • Catamarans: Easier to handle, making them suitable for beginners. The dual-hull design provides stability, reducing the learning curve for those new to sailing.

2. Space and Comfort:

  • Sailboats: Generally have a narrower beam and less living space. However, some sailboats may offer comfortable cabins and amenities.
  • Catamarans: Wider beam creates more living space. Catamarans often have multiple cabins, spacious saloons, and expansive deck areas, providing a more comfortable living experience.

3. Stability:

  • Sailboats: Monohulls can heel (lean) while sailing, which some sailors enjoy for the thrill but can be discomforting for others.
  • Catamarans: Greater stability due to the dual hulls, providing a more level sailing experience. Reduced heeling makes catamarans suitable for those prone to seasickness.

4. Performance:

  • Sailboats: Known for their upwind performance and ability to sail close to the wind. Some sailors appreciate the challenge of optimizing sail trim for efficiency.
  • Catamarans: Faster on a reach and downwind due to their wide beam. However, they may not point as high into the wind as monohulls.
  • Sailboats: Typically have a deeper draft, limiting access to shallow anchorages and requiring deeper marina berths.
  • Catamarans: Shallow draft allows access to shallower waters and secluded anchorages, providing more flexibility in cruising destinations.
  • Sailboats: Generally more affordable upfront, with a wide range of options available to fit different budgets.
  • Catamarans: Often more expensive upfront due to their size and design. However, maintenance costs may be comparable or even lower in some cases.

7. Mooring and Docking:

  • Sailboats: Easier to find slips and moorings in marinas designed for monohulls.
  • Catamarans: Require wider slips and may have limited availability in certain marinas, especially in crowded anchorages.

8. Intended Use:

  • Sailboats: Ideal for traditional sailors who enjoy the art of sailing, racing enthusiasts, or those on a tighter budget.
  • Catamarans: Suited for those prioritizing comfort, stability, and spacious living areas, especially for long-term cruising and chartering.

9. Resale Value:

  • Sailboats: Generally have a more established resale market, with a wider range of buyers.
  • Catamarans: Growing in popularity, and well-maintained catamarans often retain their value.

10. Personal Preference:

  • Consider your personal preferences, the type of sailing you plan to do, and the kind of lifestyle you want aboard your vessel.

In conclusion, both sailboats and catamarans have their advantages and disadvantages. Your decision should be based on your individual preferences, experience level, budget, and intended use. If possible, charter both types of vessels to experience firsthand how they handle and to help make a more informed decision based on your own preferences and needs.

How to Sail a Hobie Cat: Step-by-Step Instructions and Tips for Enhancing Your Experience

Sailing a Hobie Cat can be an exhilarating and unforgettable experience. These small, fast, and maneuverable catamarans offer a unique way to enjoy the water, combining speed and skill in a thrilling adventure . Whether you’re a beginner or already have some sailing experience, mastering the art of sailing a Hobie Cat will undoubtedly enhance your enjoyment on the open sea. In this blog post, we will provide you with step-by-step instructions and tips to help you become a pro at sailing these incredible boats .

Step 1: Familiarize Yourself with Your Hobie Cat

Before setting sail, it’s crucial to take some time to understand the various components of your Hobie Cat. Start with studying the rigging system, including the mast and sails . Learn how to properly set up your boat by attaching the mainsail and jib securely . Familiarize yourself with each control line ─ from adjusting the main sheet tension to managing the jib halyard ─ as they play a vital role in controlling the boat’s speed and direction.

Step 2: Perfect Your Launch Technique

A successful launch is key to an enjoyable sailing experience. Begin by launching your Hobie Cat from a sandy beach or gently rolling waves rather than attempting it from deep waters until you gain more confidence. Make sure both hulls are equally submerged before climbing aboard.

Once onboard, keep in mind that weight distribution is crucial for maintaining balance while sailing . Sit near or on just one side of the boat as it moves along; this technique is known as ‘trapezing.’ By balancing your weight accordingly, you’ll optimize stability and speed during your journey.

Step 3: Understanding Wind Direction

Sailing effectively revolves around harnessing wind power with precision. Knowing how wind impacts your sail is essential when navigating a Hobie Cat successfully. Keep an eye out for telltale signs like rippling water surfaces or flags blowing in a specific direction. These visual cues can give you insights into wind patterns, helping you strategically plan your maneuvers.

Step 4: Tacking and Jibing Techniques

Tacking and jibing are the primary methods of changing directions while sailing . When tacking, steer your Hobie Cat through the wind so that it switches from one side to the other ─ this keeps the bow moving forward relative to the wind. Conversely, when jibing, make sure to turn the boat with the wind at your back ─ this changes the stern’s position without stopping or reversing its momentum.

Remember to execute these maneuvers slowly and precisely in order to maintain control and prevent capsizing. With practice, you’ll become more comfortable with these techniques and execute them effortlessly.

Step 5: Mastering Sail Trim

Sailing an agile Hobie Cat demands a keen understanding of sail trim. Adjusting your sails correctly allows for optimal power generation, speed, and balance throughout your voyage. Experiment with loosening or tightening various control lines until you find a configuration that maximizes performance in different wind conditions.

Be attentive to changes in wind speed or direction as they may require further adjustments to maintain an efficient sail trim. By fine-tuning this skill over time, you’ll be able to squeeze every ounce of performance from your Hobie Cat while gliding across the water gracefully.

Tips for Enhancing Your Experience:

1. Take a sailing lesson: If you’re new to sailing or want to improve your skills, consider taking a sailing lesson from a certified instructor who specializes in catamarans like the Hobie Cat. They can provide personalized guidance and valuable tips tailored specifically to your needs.

2. Practice regularly: Like any skill, mastering sailing requires practice! Regularly getting out on the water will help build confidence and refine your techniques faster.

3. Keep safety in mind: Always prioritize safety by wearing appropriate protective gear such as life jackets and sunblock. Additionally, be aware of weather forecasts and any potential hazards before heading out.

4. Sail with a buddy: Sailing can be more enjoyable and safer when done with a partner or a group. Having someone to share the experience with also allows for learning from each other’s successes and mistakes.

In conclusion, sailing a Hobie Cat is an incredible adventure that offers endless fun on the water. By following these step-by-step instructions and implementing our tips, you can enhance your sailing experience while enjoying the thrill of harnessing wind power on this remarkable catamaran.
