Motor Yacht

Luxury motor yacht Magic, built in 2004 by American shipyard Northern Marine, sees a contemporary departure for the company who usually builds heavy, trawler-style vessels. With a fibreglass hull and superstructure she features interior and exterior design by Setzer Design Group. This elegant vessel measures 39.62 metres and can accommodate up to 10 guests.

Motor yacht Magic was the largest built by Northern Marine at her launch although she has since been succeeded by the 46 metre Lia Fail. Owners Merlin and Carolyn Hanson requested she be created to reflect a high-speed vessel with a displacement hull easily used in shallow waters. To accommodate this request the luxury vessel was designed with a 6' 10" shallow draft ideal for island cruising, and she is powered by MTU 12V-2000's with 1480 horsepower that ensure she is both economical and high-performing.

The super yacht is spread over three decks and her layout ensures extensive space is created for all staterooms as well as focusing on generous inside and outdoor public areas. The interior is a reflection of the traditional yachts of the 1930s, using timeless details like fluted columns and intricate mouldings to set-off satin-finished raised-panel mahogany. The interior design is highly personalized, featuring significant input by Carolyn Hanson and a handpicked group of stylists.

On the main deck can be found a large sheltered aft deck lounge that connects to the main salon through sliding glass doors. The formal dining salon is also located on this level, serviced by a large and well-equipped gourmet galley. Besides the guest accommodation, the lower deck also houses a guest laundry room and a large walk-in luggage locker tucked neatly beneath the curved staircase descending from the main-deck foyer.

Designed with entertainment in mind, motor yacht Magic’s exterior spaces are a highlight of her design. Particularly noteworthy is the open sun deck fitted with bar/grill area and a large spa tub. The bridge deck is accessed via a stairway that delivers guests to a lobby equipped with a dayhead and dumbwaiter service area. Aft can be found the bridge deck lounge; a covered space boasting lounging cushions and teak decking.

Amongst her five cabins are an indulgent owner’s suite; two King staterooms; one Queen stateroom; and one double/twin cabin. Located forward on the main deck, the full-beam owner’s suite features a generous walk-in dressing room, laundry room, and a private bathroom with Jacuzzi. A neat office connects the suite to the entrance lobby. The two King staterooms are located aft on the lower deck, while the two remaining guest suites are found forward. Each includes marble en suite baths.

Featuring a dedicated crew, Magic cruises comfortably at 15 knots while her crew of seven under the direction of Captain Dave Ober ensure the needs of every guest are met.

AirYacht may not have the most original moniker, but the new concept is undeniably inventive.

Envisioned by Guillaume Hoddé and Matthieu Ozanne, the new two-in-one vessel comprises a luxe 197-foot superyacht and a giant 656-foot blimp that together enable cruising in either the skies or seas. The Swiss outfit that created it, which is also called AirYacht, says the two vessels can also be separated and used independently for even more versatility.

The detachable balloon, known as the “airship,” is currently powered by a hybrid propulsion system, though the team hopes it will run exclusively on hydrogen in the future. With space for three crew, it can reportedly reach 50 knots at full tilt and fly up to roughly 9,800 feet above the ground. It also has an autonomous cruising time of around one week, according to the firm.

The adjoining superyacht, or “residence” as the designers call it, sports an aerodynamic hull crafted entirely from ultra-lightweight carbon to ensure it soars seamlessly through air or water. Spread across three levels, the living quarters span roughly 8,000 square feet and can accommodate up to 12 guests in a five or six-cabin layout. There are also amenities aplenty, including a Jacuzzi, pool, spa, gym, helipad and a garage for cars, toys and tenders.

Interestingly, the yacht itself doesn’t sport any engines as they add too much weight. As such, it will rely on the airship to get around. Hoddé told Robb Report the residence can be tugged by the airship when in water.

As for separating the two individual vessels, the AirYacht is equipped with an innovative launch system, or “lift”, which allows the superyacht to be gently lowered (or raised) without the airship ever needing to touch the ground.

Penned by Franck Darnet of Darnet Design, the AirYacht is not to be confused with Lazzarini’s bonkers flying superyacht concept of the same name. (As we said, the moniker isn’t exactly original.) There are similarities, though; both yachts are powered by helium blimps and can take to the sky or sea.

AirYacht says orders are now open and the first delivery is planned for the end of 2026.

CAPTAIN RON GERRLER With 3 circumnavigations, 18 Atlantic crossings, 3 Pacific round tours and 7 Indian Ocean crossings as well as extensive Mediterranean, Caribbean and Bahamas cruising experience it’s hard to find anyone with more extensive sailing experience. Some of his, too many to list, voyages have been single-handed, others with multi-lingual crew, on mono and multi hulled vessels, ranging from brand-new yachts on their maiden voyages to skippering a 180’ schooner built in 1902 and fitted with an 8-cylinder MWM U-boat engine! Ron has MCA and RYA certification in addition to his BSc in Metallurgical and Mechanical Engineering which led to a successful career in the design and manufacturing of cutting tools and programming of CNC machines before becoming a very knowledgeable and respected charter yacht captain. His experience and personality will ensure all guests have wonderful and long lasting memories of sailing on a beautiful, fast and safe yacht with an attentive and dedicated crew Chef Eda Caglar Eda grew up in Bodrum, Turkey one of the most beautiful and famous yachting towns in the world. As far back as Eda can remember her family grew their own organic products in their garden at home. Eda as a child has always loved the sea and started swimming and sailing at a young age. Eda attending college and university in Turkey where she studied science education. After completing university, in 2008 she traveled to the States to Central Florida University to attend the hospitality management certificate program and had an internship at Walt Disney World Eda has been a yacht chef for about 6 years now. She loves sharing the Mediterranean cuisine blended with fresh vegetables and quality ingredients of the region most of the time. With her background in good quality olive oil production, knowing this is one of the most important elements which gives the taste of good food, which comes with years of experience, has proved invaluable to her culinary style. Since Eda grew up on Mediterranean cuisine, she has always been happy to discover different cuisines. As someone who has been observing and living the food world professionally for many years, she says that Mediterranean cuisine is her favourite, as it emphasizes on fresh, whole foods, healthy fats, and plant-based ingredients with links to numerous health benefits.

Description

The Ocean 80 schooner Arrow of Ayr has undergoing a major refit by Peake Yacht Services, Trinidad, from June to December 2022. Ocean 80s have a well-proven racing track record of circumnavigating the world although Arrow, which was built in Guernsey, has only crossed the Atlantic Ocean. She is a fast and capable charter yacht. Her interior was specifically designed for the Caribbean charter market with 4 equal-sized double cabins. All have ensuite bathrooms and air conditioning. The main saloon is very spacious with comfortable seating and a large dining table. On deck there is plenty of space for sunbathing and seating for 8 around the cockpit table. She cruises at 8 knots under power but has reached speeds of 15 knots under sail. The stern transom folds down to provide an ideal swimming platform. After completing university, in 2008 she traveled to the States to Central Florida University to attend the hospitality management certificate program and had an internship at Walt Disney World. Eda has been a yacht chef for about 6 years now. She loves sharing the Mediterranean cuisine blended with fresh vegetables and quality ingredients of the region most of the time. With her background in good quality olive oil production, knowing this is one of the most important elements which gives the taste of good food, which comes with years of experience, has proved invaluable to her culinary style. Since Eda grew up on Mediterranean cuisine, she has always been happy to discover different cuisines. As someone who has been observing and living the food world professionally for many years, she says that Mediterranean cuisine is her favorite, as it emphasizes on fresh, whole foods, healthy fats, and plant-based ingredients with links to numerous health benefits.

Yacht club in Ayrshire moves to a temporary new home

Ayr Yacht and Cruising Club has been based on part of the River Ayr, known locally as ‘The Gut’ for 20 years.

A well established yacht and cruising club in Ayr, South Ayrshire, is moving to a temporary new home.

However, due to a build-up of silt in the river, dredging is now underway to enable a deeper channel for vessels to negotiate the harbour.

And that means the club has now moved to a temporary new base on the river.

A spokesperson for the club said: “The area has been silting up over the last few years and to allow the boats access the harbour, we have  agreed to dredge, although the club is having to pay for the dredger.

“Associated British Ports have been helpful in getting the licence and permissions and, after the club members dismantled the pontoons and chains and got them ready to be moved, the pilot boat towed the  pontoons down the river to a temporary location while the dredging is underway.”

Ayr Yacht and Cruising Club which has been in existence for more than 50 years and members have been based at The Gut for some 20 years.

The spokesperson added: “Pontoons will be put back into place after the dredging and this will make the club more accessible for members’ boats.

“Well done to the members involved for all their hard work and thanks to the Port Authority for their assistance in the matter.”
