Costa Rica Luxury Yacht Charter Guide Located at the heart of Central America, Costa Rica is one of the most popular yacht charter destinations in the Pacific. Yet, with a coastline bordering the Caribbean Sea too, the country is also a great starting point for a charter vacation in the idyllic waters of the Caribbean. The best time to visit Costa Rica is in its dry season, which runs from late November to late April, although its boasts moderate climes year round.
Yacht Charters in Costa Rica A yacht charter in Costa Rica usually starts in the lively port town of Puerto Caldera on the north Pacific coast, which acts as a gateway to the idyllic and secluded southern coast. Along the way, discover waters overflowing with coral and tropical fish, and lush jungle-clad interiors that create a truly unforgettable charter experience.
Charter Itineraries in Costa Rica On Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, discover the Tortuguero National Park, home to exotic animals and flowers, and discoverable by foot, boat or zip line. Whereas on the Pacific Coast, highlights include Isla del Cano, one of the planet’s top dive sites, the spectacular beaches and wildlife of Curu National Wildlife Refuge, and the idyllic white sandy beaches of the Island of Tortuga. Other unique attractions that make Costa Rica such as fantastic superyacht destination are the surfing opportunities of Pavones, the bioluminescence of tiny plankton at night in the waters of Zancudo, and the secluded and beautiful Osa Peninsular.

Day Four Leave early for Golfo Dulce where we will stop for a trip to the Corcovado National Park. Here you will experience some quite spectacular bird watching such as pairs of scarlet macaws. When in the wild you will always find them in pairs and if they are captured and separated, they will never mate again as they always mate for life once they choose their partner. We'll paddle up the Agujitas River by kayak while listening to the cacophony of sounds that the yellow-orange billed toucans and scarlet macaws make. We'll anchor for the night in Golfo Dulce and have an early dinner onboard while the crew prepares for an overnight passage to Coiba Island in Panama. Day Five At Coiba Island, you will have an experience of a swim snorkel or scuba gear as you explore the reefs. You w ill also enjoy world class deep-fishing. Coiba Island is rich with tropical rain forest which is a home for varieties of beautiful birds like the red and blue-green macaws.
Day Six On the sixth day, you will be on a cruise to the Las Perlas Islands. They are geographically positioned in a way that they shelter the Isla Sonora Caves hosting the world largest pelican habitat. It’s a great sight to behold here and you can look around to find pearls of Espiritu Santo. Lunch is served onboard, with a variety of plenty to eat before you have your siesta. After a quality time of rest, you get to enjoy an exotic dinner again. Day Seven Our next tour will be to Mira Flores Lock and the much talked about Panama Canal. It takes about a full day or night to cross over to Isthmus Panama. Get your cameras ready as you may be lucky to catch a view of the endangered manatee which takes the Chagres River as its home. A lot of amazing animals will be seen on this tour, you never can tell what next you will be opportune to see. Dinner is served as you arrive at Puerto Cristobal Habor. The chef and the crew know its’ your last night and they will be prepared to spoil you with varieties of exotic meals. During our pleasant lunch at Las Brisas waiting for our appointed meeting time, we observed the Surfari Del Mar offshore at anchor and wondered who would be taking the place of Captain Jack who, we had learned the evening before, had recently passed away. Much to our surprise, and eventual delight, we were approached by a lovely young lady who introduced herself as Frecia, skipper of the Surfari. While strong winds the previous day had kicked up sediment in the water where we snorkeled making it less than perfect, everything else on the cruise was exceptional – the sailboat itself, the crew (Frecia and her two Argentinian mates), the music playlist, the food and local drinks and the sunset. This was “Pura Vida” at its best! The booking of the cruise through GetMyBoat was easy and without issue.

We had an amazing experience with Byron, Chris, and Gilbert. Freest crew and great experience. This private charter was SO much better than a group boat ride. The control and attention were worth every penny!
That was one of our greatest days spent in Costa Rica. We were an international group of 6 adults and a small child who decided to have a boat trip right the next day. Captain Jack remained available for us till midnight for clarifying the booking details. We had 4-5 hours trip with diving, fishing and a delicious food made onboard included. We were also able to see the sunset from the ocean. The Captain Jack crew - Pressia and the boys are so lovely. We talked and laugh a lot with them. What a prefect day it was.:) I highly recommend you to reserve one day from your vacation and go for it.
Complete 5 star experience. Could not recommend a boat and crew more. Such a great day with wonderful service, food, drinks, and a friendly crew!
Great time aboard with the crew! Spent a lovely Sunday with my whole family and there was never a dull moment. Thank you!

5 star experience from start to finish. Crew could not have been more helpful and accommodating and the boat is gorgeous! If you have the opportunity, I strongly suggest chartering this boat and crew,

What to expect from a Yacht Charter in Costa Rica?
Nature is the word of the day when it comes to a yacht charter in Costa Rica, and adventure indeed abounds for visitors to her dazzling shores. From zipping through the lush canopies of the country’s famous Cloud Forests to diving in some of the most spectacularly biodiverse waters in the world: fewer luxury travel adventures deliver as spectacular an appeal as a luxury yacht charter in Costa Rica.
The best places to cruise in Costa Rica
Costa Rica is the tropical gem of Central America, with Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south. A luxury yacht rental in Costa Rica offers the choice of two diverse coastlines, with the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east. The ‘Pura Vida’ is the way of life in Costa Rica. One of the planet’s most biodiverse destinations, Costa Rica, is home to an astonishing 5% of the world’s species – and the country works hard to protect it with vast national parks and an impressive sustainable tourism industry. Bustling coastal towns are filled with world-class marinas, restaurants, and entertainment, while lush rainforests and pristine beaches offer a chance to explore nature at its finest.
Yacht Charter in Costa Rica Highlights
The most popular starting point for a private yacht charter in Costa Rica is the busy port city of Puerto Caldero. Located on the Pacific coast, it is the gateway to some of Costa Rica’s most excellent highlights. Start with a cruise up the coast to Puntarenas with its beautiful beaches, and head ashore to spend a day at the Monteverde Cloud Forest, home to more than 500 species of mammals and tropical birds. The world-famous Monteverde Cloud Forest zipline is a must-do for the whole family, allowing you to fly above the treetops for breathtaking vistas and share an unforgettable experience. Our helpful charter brokers can assist you in creating the ideal itinerary for a yacht charter in Costa Rica.
Though packed with adventure, Costa Rica is a small country with just 270 kilometres between the east and west coasts. From hiking in beautiful national parks such as the Corcovado to experiencing the best of city living in San Jose, most inland Costa Rica highlights are accessible by private car, helicopter, or private plane.
Costa Rica Wildlife
Despite covering only 0.03 per cent of the Earth’s area, Costa Rica is said to be responsible for nearly six per cent of the world’s biodiversity, according to the country’s embassy. With 25% of its territory protected, it also serves as a haven for many of the world’s endangered species. It is home to over 500,000 species. The majority of Costa Rica’s wildlife encounters can be had in the country’s vast National Parks and Reserves, which encompass beaches, mangroves, and lush tropical rainforests which stretch from the Caribbean shore to the Pacific.
Big Wave Surfing
Costa Rica is synonymous with surfing, and some of the world’s best waves are found on the Costa Rican coast. Playa Grande and the surrounding islands on the Pacific Coast are a must for surfers, offering both strong surf and beginner waves. Playa Grande is part of the Las Baulas National Marine Park, the protected home to howler monkeys, leatherback turtles and hundreds of bird species.
Tamarindo on the Pacific coast is also a fantastic surfing spot in Costa Rica, as is Jaco’s coastal town. Those looking for a more relaxed day while the surfers hit the waves can enjoy a leisurely afternoon soaking up the Pura Vida with a freshly brewed Costa Rican coffee at an oceanfront cafe, or head for a round of golf at one of Costa Rica’s many exclusive golf resorts.
Natural Wonderland
Sloths in mangrove swamps, howler monkeys swinging from thick jungle canopies, cloud forests, and a wide variety of sharks, fish, rays and whales in its biodiverse waters: Costa Rica is a natural destination made for ultimate exploration. However, one of the biggest natural draws to Costa Rica is the annual nesting of the sea turtles – a must-do experience when you rent a luxury yacht charter in Costa Rica.
Costa Rica’s most famous green sea turtle nesting site is the Tortuguero National Park on the Northern Caribbean coast, one of the most important green sea turtle nesting sites globally. The endangered leatherback turtles are the world’s largest sea turtles and nest on both the Pacific and Caribbean sides. With breathtaking sighting experiences organised with conservationist professionals, observing the turtles nesting is a perfect stop on a superyacht charter in Costa Rica.
The Ultimate Central American Adventure
With so much to offer to yacht charter clients from Costa Rica to the Galapagos Islands and beyond, Central America is the perfect destination to create the ultimate bucket-list superyacht journey. For those looking to create an extended adventure to explore Central America’s best luxury yacht, Costa Rica is a fantastic starting point to continue to cruise through the world-famous Panama Canal and onwards to the magnificent beauty of Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.
When is the best time to visit Costa Rica by yacht?
Located close to the equator, Costa Rica enjoys a tropical climate all year round. Temperatures average around 30-33 degrees Celsius during the dry season, with up to 12 hours of sunshine per day. The best time to rent a luxury yacht in Costa Rica is in the dry season, which runs from November to April. However, if a daily dose of tropical rain doesn’t dampen your spirits, Costa Rica is a fantastic luxury charter destination at any time of the year.

The country’s diverse marine ecosystems offer an unparalleled opportunity to engage with nature, from spotting dolphins and whales to diving among vibrant coral reefs.
Renting a yacht provides exclusive access to remote beaches and hidden coves, away from the tourist crowds, allowing for a truly personalized and intimate exploration of the natural beauty.
Types of Yacht Rentals Available
Whether you’re planning a fishing expedition, a family outing, or a romantic getaway, Costa Rica has a yacht to suit every occasion. Options range from sleek motor yachts capable of high-speed cruising to elegant sailing yachts that offer a more serene journey. Catamarans are particularly popular for their stability and spacious decks, ideal for groups and events.
Each yacht type presents its own set of advantages, catering to different preferences and activities.
Popular Yachting Destinations
The Pacific Coast, with its famous Nicoya Peninsula and Guanacaste region, is a hotspot for yacht rentals. Here, adventurers can explore rich marine life, surf world-class waves, and relax on sun-drenched beaches.
The Caribbean Coast, less traveled but equally enchanting, offers tranquil waters and a unique cultural blend, making it a must-visit for those seeking a blend of adventure and serenity.
Planning Your Yacht Rental
The best time to rent a yacht in Costa Rica is during the dry season, from December to April when the seas are calm and the weather is at its finest. Before booking, ensure you have the necessary documentation and understand the qualifications required for yacht rental.
Selecting the right yacht rental company is crucial; look for those with positive reviews, comprehensive services, and robust safety protocols.
Costs and Inclusions
Yacht rental costs in Costa Rica can vary widely depending on the type of yacht, duration of the rental, and included amenities. Prices may range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per day. Rental packages typically include a skilled crew, fuel, and basic onboard amenities, with additional costs for docking fees, insurance, and catering services.

Experiencing Costa Rica by yacht offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse yourself in the country’s stunning natural beauty and rich biodiversity, all while enjoying the luxury and comfort of a private vessel. Here are some of the most memorable experiences and activities you can enjoy on a Costa Rican yacht charter:
1. Wildlife Watching
Costa Rica’s waters are teeming with marine life. A yacht excursion might bring you close encounters with dolphins, sea turtles, and during certain seasons, majestic whales. The country’s Pacific coast, in particular, is renowned for its marine biodiversity, offering chances to see these creatures in their natural habitat.
2. Snorkeling and Diving
The clear waters of Costa Rica provide perfect conditions for snorkeling and diving. Costa Rica is a world-class fishing destination. Whether you’re interested in deep-sea fishing for marlin, sailfish, and tuna or prefer inshore fishing for snapper and roosterfish, a yacht charter can provide you with the equipment, expertise, and perfect spots for a successful sport fishing Costa Rica trip.
4. Surfing Safaris
For the adventurous, Costa Rica’s Pacific coastline offers some of the best surfing spots in the world. A yacht can access remote surf spots that are difficult to reach by land, providing surfers with uncrowded waves and unique experiences.
5. Beach Hopping
With a yacht, you can explore Costa Rica’s myriad of secluded beaches and private coves that are otherwise inaccessible. Enjoy sunbathing, swimming, and picnicking on pristine sands without the crowds, surrounded by nature’s splendor.
6. Sunset Cruises
There’s nothing quite like watching the sun dip below the horizon from the deck of a yacht, cocktail in hand. Sunset cruises offer a tranquil and romantic setting, perfect for ending a day of adventure or celebrating a special occasion.
7. Overnight Yacht Experiences
Many yacht charters offer the option of on-board chefs who can prepare gourmet meals using fresh local ingredients. Enjoying a delicious dinner with the backdrop of the ocean and under the stars is an experience in itself.
8. Cultural Excursions
Some yacht charters include opportunities to explore the mainland, offering a blend of luxury sea travel with cultural and eco-tourism. Visit local communities, learn about Costa Rican traditions, and explore national parks and reserves.

Given it’s a short trip and we have a toddler… what is our best bet-
1. La fortuna or monteverde?
2. Is it possible to do both?
3. Any of the all-inclusive resorts/eco lodges worth it? (I have never been to one and we don’t drink)
Please give me your logging suggestions if you have any. The trip doesn’t have to be super budget conscious, but we don’t need 5star hotel/resort either.
4 replies to this topic
Flight times would be crucial. If you land late in the day and depart early you'd have to stay near the airport your first and last nights.
I'd only consider this if your little one is good in a car . we're lucky in our family; ours always immediately fall asleep on road trips. Unless you're timid drivers, I do recommend that you rent a vehicle. Tat way you'd have a car seat for whenever you go out.
I love Los Pinos for Monteverde. It might be handy to have your own kitchen for feeding a toddler. If you prefer more luxury, look at Hotels Koora and Senda.
Near Arenal, look at Lomas del Volcan, Hotel Kokoro, and Arenal Lodge. There are many others.
Monteverde is not a rainforest destination - it’s a cloudforest, attractive in its own right. Most visitors there enjoy hiking in the hilly reserves, ziplines and hanging bridges and great birdwatching.
With a toddler along, I’d suggest the Arenal area or Manuel Antonio . Both are 3 hours from the airport, have much better paved roads than Monteverde and both have extensive wildlife. Arenal has hot springs, hanging bridges, ziplines, a big waterfall down a long staircase, a wildlife sanctuary and volcano hikes. Manuel Antonio has the same options less thd volcano views and hot springs but it also has one of the most beautiful beaches in the country, inside the national park.
Neither area has all-inclusive resorts but there is a wide range of lodging options at all price points. For mid-range properties in Arenal I’ve stayed at Hotel Silencio del Campo and Lost Iguana Resort and enjoyed both. For further options take a look at https://www.twoweeksincostarica.com/la-fortuna-hotel-guide/
For the Manuel Antonio area take a look at https://www.twoweeksincostarica.com/manuel-antonio-hotel-guide/ We’ve stayed at Villa Nicolas in a large unit with full kitchen and huge deck and also Si Como No and Tulemar and enjoyed all 3 properties, but Tulemar was extra special because of the setting and wildlife onsite.
The Manual Antonio area is definitely a good option, but I would not justify it based on drive times. We were along the coast a few weeks ago and were reminded of how congested it is until you get south of Uvita . Getting to MA from SJO may take longer than three hours. The drive between there and Arenal can easily take five hours, so combining the two is a lot of time on the road.
It can actually take less time to get to Monteverde than to Manual Antonio. We've done the drive from SJO to Monteverde within three hours, on several occasions. Now that Monteverde is a Canton, funds are more accessible for continuous road work. A friend was there last month and saw a lot of recently filled potholes.
I should be more reluctant to share this; Monteverde is already getting too crowded during peak periods. For those who can handle temperatures below 80F and some wind, smoother roads are good news.
“1. La fortuna or monteverde?”:
The weather in early Dec. is unpredictable, so are Rd conditions.
It may be chilly, rainy, windy in Monteverde, especially at night. You would need to bring warm clothes. If you search the CR forum, you should be able to find prior threads from travellers looking for suggestions of accommodations with heating for Monteverde. https://costa-rica-guide.com/travel/best-time/december/ has some info about typical weather in CR in Dec., though it is impossible to predict how it will be in Dec. this yr. The site linked in Post 2 has a CR Packing List with Special considerations of what to pack for Monteverde - https://www.twoweeksincostarica.com/packing-for-costa-rica/ .
“2. Is it possible to do both?”: If your flight is to SJO, not Liberia , Arenal hotels might take you about 3 hrs to get there - AFTER you get out of the arrivals, which has been reportedly taking anywhere from a short time to 1.5 and even 3 hrs, due to long immigration lines, etc. Then you need to be met by a rep of your car rental company, who will drive you to the nearest car rental office. Traffic near SJO is very busy, so even a short distance might take awhile. Then you need to carefully examine the car , take photos/video, add any imperfections to the rental docs, finalize the paperwork, - all before you can begin your ~ 3 hr drive toward you Arenal area hotel. Alternatively, you can arrange in advance a private transfer. It is usually recommended not to drive long distances after dark. It gets dark early in CR. So if you are not sure you can reach your destination by 6 pm or so, you would need to stay at one of the hotels near SJO or book a private transfer (https://www.iltcostarica.com/product/transportation/private-shuttles , for ex., has lots of reviews on TA and has been mentioned in a few recent trip reports on the forum. Their FAQs have lots of info, incl. about the fee for a car seat, if needed, etc. - https://www.iltcostarica.com/faq/private-transportation).
Considering how brief your trip to CR is and the unknowns about your international flights - airport/s in CR, times, I am not sure you have time for 2 destinations.
A popular transfer between Arenal and Monteverde is shared van-boat-van (sometimes called Jeep -boat- jeep ), via L. Arenal, which costs about US30 pp each way, can be arranged by you or by your Arenal or Monteverde hotel, and might take about 3 hrs.
Travel times in CR are always estimated.
Arenal to Manuel Antonio / Quepos area hotels is about 5 hrs. Manuel Antonio to SJO, for ex., is about 3 hrs (+ an extra to return a rental car , if you want to self-drive, and to get a ride from the car rental office to the international terminal).
“3. Any of the all-inclusive resorts/eco lodges worth it? (I have never been to one and we don’t drink)”:
CR does not have lots of AIs, in comparison. We did not have a good experience at an AI resort in CR. When we want AI, we go elsewhere. In CR, there are (eco-) lodges, inns, hotels, some with separate houses on one large property. Some accommodations include breakfasts and have (a) restaurant/s on site. Rarely, hotels might include a guided hike in the price of an overnight stay. In Arenal, https://www.arenalobservatorylodge.com/ located near the volcano, includes full breakfasts in a restaurant with the views of the volcano and L. Arenal in the distance, on a clear day; it also includes a free morning guided walk ( https://www.arenalobservatorylodge.com/free-activities/ ), which we had booked for the first morning, after an early breakfast. There are kms of own trails ( https://www.arenalobservatorylodge.com/property-map/ ), each is fairly short and most are Easy (see the Legend on the 1st page of the linked map), which you can explore with a guide or by yourself. There are lots of places to take a rest, if your toddler or you are tired. It is a birding hot spot. We also saw other wildlife there - capuchin and spider monkeys, large groups of adult and baby coaties passing by right in front of th observation deck near the restaurant. We watched a coati climbing a tree and a variety of colourful birds from our balcony. If you are not renting a car , you can a variety of tours from there - https://www.arenalobservatorylodge.com/arenal-volcano-tours/ . AOL is located not far from the SkyAdventure Arenal Park ( https://skyadventures.travel/ ). They might pick you up, for a fee, if needed.

How to Get to Tortuguero: The 6 Transportation Options
If you are wondering how to get to Tortuguero, Costa Rica, you’ve come to the right place!
Tortuguero is a bit different than a lot of towns in Costa Rica because it is not directly accessible by car or shuttle. Yeap, there are no cars in this village.
Instead, it is possible to get here by plane from San Jose or by boat from La Pavona.
We have visited Tortuguero several times and have figured out the 6 best ways to get here.
So let’s go through each option and find the best route for you!
Tortuguero Transportation at a Glance
Step One : Drive with rental car, take a private shuttle, take a shared shuttle, or take a public bus to the La Pavona water taxi launch near the Caribbean Coast.
Step Two : Take a water taxi to the town of Tortuguero (takes one to two hours)
Step Three : Walk to your hotel in town
*Alternatively you can skip steps one and two and opt to take a domestic flight to Tortuguero *
Want to save all the hassle of planning? You can book a 3-night getaway to Tortuguero from San Jose with transportation included .
Boat from La Pavona to Tortuguero
The small village of La Pavona serves as the gateway to Tortuguero .
Unless you opt to take a domestic flight directly to Tortuguero, you will need to take a public or private water taxi from La Pavona.
I will explain all the different ways to get to La Pavona in the next section. But first, once you get to La Pavona, here is what you can expect.
Public Boat Timetable
To Tortuguero : 6:00am, 7:30am, 9:00am, 11:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm, 4:30pm.
From Tortuguero back to La Pavona : 5:00am, 7:00am, 9:00am, 11:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm.
Tickets cost between ₡3.000- 5.000 ($5-10) per person depending on the amount of luggage you have.
This ticket can not be purchased ahead of time. There is a ticket office at the dock where you need to purchase this in person.
In our experience, it occasionally books out so it is best to arrive early and expect that you might have to take the next boat if it is too full.
Travel Time
The boat ride takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes during the rainy season . It can take up to 2 hours if the water level is very low in the Tortuguero canals due to low tide or dry season.
La Pavona has a small basic restaurant, a small shop with things like ponchos and bottled water, and restrooms that cost about 50 cents to use.
Additionally, it is possible to take a private boat service from the La Pavona dock. This will cost a lot more (up to about $20 per person one way), but this is the best option if you can’t get a spot on the public boat.
The one private service I know of is called Fersa. They run daily at 9:15am, 11:15am, 12:45am, 3:15pm, and 4:15pm.
If you’d like, you can contact them, their Whatsapp number is +506 8831 6401 or you can reach out to them via their Facebook page.
I don’t suggest paying for anything ahead of time. I do not know if they have a secure booking system.
Additionally, you can always contact your hotel in Tortuguero. They deal with this on a daily basis and can most likely organize boat transportation for you.
You really do not want to have to spend the night at La Pavona. There is not a single hotel here, so you would have to sleep in your rental car.
In other words, make sure you are on the last boat for the day or you are kind of stuck.
However, I have read that there is free WIFI and they keep the bathrooms at the dock open all night. So, if you do get stuck here and need to sleep in your vehicle, it’s not THAT uncomfortable.
Things to Consider
- It is best to bring as little luggage as possible
- If possible, opt for an oversized backpack instead of a suitcase
- It can be a bit difficult to get in and out of the boat if you have mobility issues
Now let’s go through each transportation option to find one that is best for you. …
Option #1: Rental Car & Boat
Best for: People who want the flexibility of having a car for onward travel plans
Your first option is to drive your rental car to the secure La Pavones parking lot and then take the water taxi to Tortuguero.
Pros of Rental Car
- It is the most flexible way of getting to the La Pavones lot
- It is the easiest way to continue your onward travels to your next destination
Cons of Rental Car
- You will be paying to keep your rental car at the La Pavones lot for the number of nights you are in Tortuguero. So, not only are you paying for a rental car you aren’t using but you will also be paying the parking fee.
- The drive here is a bit of an adventure (especially if coming from San Jose)
Rental Car Info
You do not need a 4×4 to get to La Pavona. However, an SUV with decent clearance is suggested due to the hilly and winding roads.
We suggest renting your car with Adobe Rent-a-Car. They are our favorite local rental car company that is upfront with their prices and has excellent customer service.
We also have a 10% car rental discount plus other great perks from Adobe to pass on to you.
Check Availability and Book Your Rental Car with 10% Discount
Parking Your Rental Car at La Pavones
There is a fenced-in and guarded parking lot at the La Pavones boat terminal.
The parking lot is massive, so there is no need to pre-book tickets.
It costs 6,000 colones per night (about $12) to leave your rental car here. You can pay for this upon arrival.
The Drive from San Jose
From the San Jose International Airport , it takes approximately 3 hours to drive to La Pavones Harbor.
However, just keep in mind that it could potentially take a lot longer depending on the traffic you hit in San José and the road work that seems to inevitably always be happening on Route 32.
The drive here from San Jose is a bit intense. You will begin by driving around the outside of the city. The roads can be very confusing and a bit scary if you aren’t familiar with driving here.
Once out of the city, you will continue on Route 32. This road is a highway in the sense that there is a decent amount of traffic and cars go fast. But, it is probably way more curvy than a lot of highways you are used to.
Toward the beginning of your drive, you will have to pay a toll before going through a tunnel. You can pay in US dollars or colones .
I like Route 32 because it is a cloud forest and always has a bit of moody feel to it.
After about one hour on Route 32 you will come to the town of Guápiles. Here you will take a left and continue northwest towards La Pavones.
This part of the drive goes through several small towns. It is mostly a low-stress route and I think it is very pretty.
The last part of the drive is unpaved, but the road is well-matted down and is easy to drive.
The Drive from La Fortuna
The drive from La Fortuna is nice and mostly stress free. It will take 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic.
You will head east out of the main downtown area onto Route 4. Just stay on Route 4 for about 1.5 hours until you meet up with Route 32. On Route 32 you will experience a bit more traffic.
In Guápiles, turn left and continue north east towards La Pavona.
The Drive from the Southern Caribbean Coast (Cahuita & Puerto Viejo)
From Puerto Viejo or Cahuita it will take about 4 hours to drive here depending on the traffic.
You will drive north on the main road until you reach the city of Limon. Traffic can get more intense here (this is the main Caribbean Coast export terminal so there are a lot of 18-wheelers).
You will turn left to head west on Route 32 until you reach the town of Guápiles. Turn right in Guapiles to head to La Pavona.
Things to Note
- Waze is the best free app for driving directions in Costa Rica.
- Put La Pavona, not Tortuguero, as your destination in your GPS.
- Leave as early as possible in the morning so that you will have plenty of time to catch a water taxi even if you hit traffic.
Option #2: Shared Transfer
Best For : Solo travelers or couples. People who don’t want the stress of driving or the price of flying.
A shared shuttle service is a good option because everything is taken care of for you.
These transfers will take you by shuttle and then by boat to the village of Tortuguero.
This takes the stress out of having to park your car at La Pavona or organize the boat ticket on your own.
- Shared Shuttle from San Jose to Tortuguero
- Shared Shuttle from La Fortuna to Tortuguero
- Shared Shuttle from Puerto Viejo to Tortuguero
Option #3: Flight
Best For: People who would like the fastest and easiest route to Tortuguero. Not on a tight budget.
Sansa Airlines offers direct flights to the Tortuguero Airport from the domestic terminal at San Jose International Airport twice daily.
Price: This typically costs about $120 per person.
Flight Time: The flight takes about 30 minutes
Considerations:
- The domestic terminal in San Jose is not located in the main international airport. It is a 5 minute walk away. Give yourself a few hours between your international and domestic flight.
- If you don’t do well with small planes, this is not for you.
- If you want amazing aerial views, this is for you.
- If you are short on time, this is the fastest way to get to Tortuguero.
- If you are on a tight budget, this option is not for you.
Check Flight Prices and Availability
Option #4: Packaged Tours to Tortuguero
If this all seems a bit overwhelming to you, you might want to consider taking a multi-day tour to Tortuguero from San Jose.
This is a great option if:
- You don’t want to rent a car
- You want to take the stress out of planning everything yourself
- If you are flying in and out of the San Jose International Airport and want to add a visit to Tortuguero on to the beginning or end of your trip.

Option #5: Private Transfer
Best For : A large group or family
With a private transfer, you will take a comfortable bus just for your group to La Pavona. From La Pavona you will need to organize the boat on your own.
We work exclusively with Adobe Transfers. They are a trustworthy company with excellent drivers.
From downtown San Jose to La Pavona will cost a few hundred dollars.
This seems like a lot, but it is for the whole bus (which fits up to 14 passengers). So, if you are a big group this is most likely the most cost-effective option.
Get a Private Transfer Price Quote Here
Option #6: Public Bus to La Pavona from San Jose
If you are on a very tight budget it is possible to get to the La Pavona dock by local bus. However, there is no direct route and it can get a bit complicated as far as timing everything correctly.
You will need to take the bus from San Jose to Cariari and then switch to a bus that goes to La Pavona.
San Jose to Cariari
- Depart from : The Caribbean bus terminal (Caribeños or Gran Caribe) in Barrio Tournon.
- Note : Later departures won’t reach Cariari in time for the last bus to La Pavona. Take the 6:30 am or 9:00 am bus to be safe.
- Ticket Information: Available at the terminal counter for approximately $3.50 / ₡1600.
- Route Length : It should take about 2 hours to get to Cariari, but it could take a lot longer with traffic
Cariari to La Pavona
- Departure Point: Buses to La Pavona wait at the Cariari bus terminal. Look for guides or locals at the terminal for assistance. In rare cases, check for buses outside the terminal.
- Departure Times: 05:00h, 09:00h, 11:30h, 15:00h.
- Ticket Information: Purchase tickets on the bus from the driver for about $2.20 / ₡1100.
- Additional Note: La Pavona is the last stop on this route.
More Info About Tortuguero
- You don’t need to spend a ton of time in Tortuguero. I think that two nights (four at most) is enough time to see everything.
- However, I definitely think it is worth visiting even though it is a hassle to get to. It is just such a unique place.
- The best time of year to visit Tortuguero is between July and September . This is the dry season on the Caribbean and the best time to see the main attraction of the area (turtle nesting).
- One of the best things you can do in Tortuguero is to take an early morning guided canoe ride through the Tortuguero River canals . You’ll likely see a wide variety of wildlife in this protected area. If you do this you will need to pay for entrance into the Tortuguero National Park as well as your boat tour. I suggest taking advantage of that admission and take a hike through the national park in the afternoon.
- Tortuguero is a small town that doesn’t have any cars. You will need to walk everywhere.
- Keep in mind that a lot of the more high end hotels are not located directly in downtown Tortuguero, but on the shore across the river. To get into the downtown area most of these hotels provide a boat service. A lot of the mid-range to budget-friendly hotels are directly in town.
- There are no ATM’s in Tortuguero and not every place takes credit card as payment. So, make sure to get some cash in USD or Costa Rican colones ahead of time.
For more info check out our complete guide to Tortuguero with the best hotels, restaurants, things to do, and more!
Conclusion: Transportation to Tortuguero
In conclusion, getting to Tortuguero can be an adventure, but overall I think it is worth it. The village is amazing and the boat ride feel like you are going to Jurrasic Park.
Now that you know all of this, which transportation option will you choose?
If you have any questions about planning your trip don’t hesitate to ask in the comment section below. We are always happy to help you out!
