Kiel war in der Geschichte zweimal Olympiastadt, 1936 und 1972. Von beiden Ereignissen zeugen die jeweiligen Olympiahäfen, der "alte Olympiahafen" fast mitten in der Stadt vor dem Kieler Yachtclub und das Olympiazentrum in Schilksee mit einem großen Hafen und den im Stil der Zeit erbauten Wohnungen für die Teilnehmer.

Da es in Kiel eine große Anzahl von privaten Segelyachten gibt (jeder Kieler hat eine Yacht oder kennt mindestens einen, der jemanden kennt, der ein Schiff hat) sind die Liegeplätze zwar zahlreich, aber auch schnell vergeben. Die städtischen Häfen werden von einer Gesellschaft geführt, die von den Kieler Segelvereinen gegründet wurde, um die Verwaltung in Eigenregie von der Stadt Kiel zu übernehmen.

Für die Charterflotten haben sich die Häfen am Ausgang der Kieler Förde angeboten. In den letzten Jahrzehnten hat sich das allerdings geändert: Es entstanden und entstehen immer mehr wohnliche Quartiere, Plätze und Areale. Durch den Kreuzfahrer-Boom wurden am Wasser riesige Investitionen getätigt, die Einkaufsstraßen und die Shopping-Center wurden modernisiert und letztlich führte die große Anzahl an Studenten zu einer weltoffenen und lebendigen Stadt.  Kiel bietet viel mehr als nur Wasser.

Wenn man den Bug aus der Kieler Förde hält, bieten sich drei Richtungen an: Norden Richtung Sonderburg - Dänemark , nach Nordosten, ebenfalls Richtung Dänemark und nach Nordwesten - auch da trifft man auf Dänemark .  Das stimmt natürlich nicht ganz, man könnte auch Richtung Fehmarn oder Heiligenhafen segeln, um dann in die Lübecker Bucht abzubiegen.

Die Hauptziele der Segler aus Kiel sind:

Richtung Norden nach Dänemark

Über Damp oder Maasholm führt der klassische Weg nach Norden Richtung Sonderburg. Die Entfernung Kieler Förde bis Sonderburg beträgt ca. 32 Seemeilen, es ist also ein schöner Tagestörn. Von dort aus geht es je nach Lust und Laune entweder weiter Richtung Kleiner Belt oder in die dänische Südsee in Richtung Faaborg.

Marstal oder Bagenkop - Hauptsache Dänemark

Ebenfalls sehr beliebt sind die Routen über die Kieler Bucht Richtung Bagenkop auf der Insel Langeland oder Marstal auf der Insel Ærø . Man kann hier in knapp 30 Seemeilen Entfernung die wunderschöne dänische Inselwelt erkunden und vielleicht am nächsten Tag weiter segeln Richtung Svendborg.

Großer Belt

Von der Kieler Förde aus kann man der klassischen Dampferroute durch den Großen Belt folgen. Man segelt am Kieler Leuchtturm vorbei Richtung Südspitze Langeland und nimmt dann Kurs Richtung Norden, zum Beispiel nach Omø oder anderen schönen Zielen (Insel Møn , Kopenhagen, Seeland)
