Rating of VI Sailing Team: (5 Being the Highest) 5 Is this your first time booking with a charter broker? No How was your experience working with your broker to book the yacht? Very Easy After booking the yacht, how was your experience working with the Concierge Team? Very Easy How would you describe the information provided in your Vacation Planner? Check as many as apply: – Informative How would you rate the frequency and content of communication from our team? Good Amount of Coummunication Charter Company & Yacht Please answer the following questions pertaining to the charter company and the yacht you chartered. Rating of Charter Company & Yacht: (5 Being the Highest) 4 Upon arrival and during your charter, were the staff of the charter company friendly and accommodating? Generally, yes. The receptionist was a bit cold but that may be a cultural difference. Did the staff do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and its equipment? Yes. Was the yacht clean and in good working condition? The yacht was great overall. We had issues with the main furler which we attributed to our inexperience with main furling systems. When we returned the boat we saw on their check list that the main furler was recommended for replacement. While it is understandable that it takes time to resolve known issues, it would have been helpful to know that it was an issue before we went out. Was the yacht’s cooking and cleaning equipment sufficient? Yes. Was the yacht well ventilated? Yes. Additional comments about the charter company and yacht you chartered? Sea Wolf is an excellent boat. The best accessories are the auto pilot and the solar panels. The solar was enough that we did not need to run the generator or engine to maintain the house bank. Cruising Area Did you like the area you chartered in? We enjoyed the BVI but are not likely to return soon. All of the destinations are, essentially, bars. We are not big drinkers and had two teens with us so they didn’t do much for us. Also, and related, we had a hard time finding activities off the boat. We did hike to The Bight from Benures Bay on Norman Island but weren’t able to get to the Baths or find any other hikes that seemed worthwhile. The snorkeling was also surprisingly poor. Perhaps we didn’t know where to go but the locations recommended in the guide, Cistern Point for example, were pretty weak. The Indians and Caves were nice. Final issue was the crowding. We were told it was still relatively slow but twice had to find alternative anchorages because our first choice was full by noon. If it can be busier than that we don’t want to be there. May we post this review on our website? Yes

THESE TERMS ALSO CONTAIN A LEGALLY BINDING RELEASE, WAIVER OF LIABILITY, AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. By creating a username, a login, clicking submit, using the services of Charter Experts, LLC d/b/a Virgin Island Sailing® (“ Broker ) or by accessing Broker’s website, you agree that you have read, and acknowledge your acceptance of these Terms. The Terms are subject to change at any time without notice at Broker’s sole discretion. Additionally, any transaction for which you have made payment shall be governed by the form of Terms in effect at the time of such payment notwithstanding any subsequent changes hereto.

If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

  • Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

  • Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
  • Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

  • Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
  • Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
  • Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.

You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. You agree that the Charter Provider and Charter Suppliers whose names appear in the information supplied to you are those who are solely responsible for providing the Charter you purchase. You consent to and request the use of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers and agree to not hold Broker responsible should any of them: (i) fail to provide the Charter or travel services you purchased, whether or not such services are listed in the Charter Agreement or otherwise, (ii) fail to comply with any applicable law, or (iii) engage in any negligent act or omission that causes you any sort of injury, damage, delay or inconvenience.

By using Broker’s services, you waive and release any claim against Broker, its affiliated and subsidiary companies, and their respective officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, arising out of or in connection with any loss of or damage to property or injury to any person caused by reason of (i) any defect, negligence, or other wrongful act or omission, or any failure of performance of any kind, by any Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, or any other provider of sea, airline, hotel, ground transportation or any other travel provider connected to or otherwise associated with the Charter, (ii) any claim for inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, mental distress or other similar claim, (iii) any delayed departure, missed connection, substitute accommodation, termination of service or change in fares or rates, and (iv) overbooking, flight or other travel cancellation, lost or misconnected personal property, or any claim arising out of the air transportation portion of your travel, and (v) or any other claim arising out of or otherwise related to the Charter Agreement or services provided by the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers.

Excepting only liability that directly arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of Broker, you will not hold Broker responsible for any injury, damage or loss you may suffer while on a Charter, whether incurred on the Charter or in connection with any other rental, purchase, excursion or activity, regardless of the relationship of any of the foregoing with the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers.

  • Your Responsibility . By booking a Charter with Broker, you agree to defend and indemnify and hold harmless Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, from and against any and all claims, causes of action, demands, recoveries, losses, damages, fines, penalties or other costs or expenses of any kind or nature, including but not limited to reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with: (i) your breach of these Terms or the documents referenced herein; (ii) your violation of any law or rights of a third party; or (iii) your use of the Broker website.

You will review your Charter Agreement and travel documents for accuracy upon receipt. You understand that it is your responsibility to review the accuracy of all details in the Charter Reservation provided to you, and that you may contact Broker if you have any questions.

You assume full and complete responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements of your destination(s), and all conditions regarding health, safety, security, political stability, and labor or civil unrest at such destination(s).

You understand that Broker recommends purchasing travel insurance to cover certain risks inherent in travel such as supplier bankruptcy and the inability to travel due to a medical or personal emergency.

  • No Warranties . All Charters, products, services, advice and information is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis without warranties of any kind, either expressed or implied to the fullest extent permitted under the law, including but not limited to, warranties of title or implied warranties of merchantability, satisfactory quality or fitness for a particular purpose. Without limiting the above, no warranty or guarantee is made (i) regarding the acceptance of any reservation request or Charter Reservation; (ii) regarding the availability of Charters, or any other product and/or services through Broker; (iii) that the use of Broker’s website will be error-free; or (iv) regarding the completeness, accuracy, reliability or quality of any information, content, data, service, advice or merchandise provided by Broker or through Broker’s website.

Broker has no special knowledge regarding the Charter Provider’s or Charter Supplier’s financial condition, unsafe conditions, health hazards, weather hazards, or climate extremes at locations to which you may travel during or otherwise in connection with your Charter.

  • Limitation on Liability . In no event shall Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and/or their respective affiliates, or any employees, agents, officers, directors, members or managers of any of the foregoing (“Broker and Charter Releasees”), be liable for any direct, indirect, punitive, incidental, special or consequential damages arising out of, or in any way connected with, your access to, display of or use the Broker’s website, the Charter or services provided to you in connection with the Charter (including, but not limited to, your reliance upon opinions of the Broker), whether based on a theory of negligence, contract, tort, strict liability, consumer protection statutes, or otherwise, and even if Broker and/or any other of the Broker and Charter Releasees have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

If, despite the limitation above, Broker or the Broker and Charter Releasees are found liable for any loss or damage which arises out of or in any way connected with any of the occurrences described above, then Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Supplier and the Broker and Charter Releasees will in no event exceed, in the aggregate, the greater of (a) the Broker Fee, and (b) One-Hundred Dollars (US $100.00).

The foregoing limitation of liability reflects the allocation of risk between the parties. The limitations specified in this section will survive and apply even if any limited remedy specified in these Terms is found to have failed of its essential purpose. The limitations of liability provided in these Terms inure to the benefit of Broker and/or its providers.

The foregoing does not affect any liability which cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

  • Limitation on Time to File Claims . ANY CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM YOU MAY HAVE ARISING OUT OF RELATING TO BROKER’S SERVICES OR THE WEBSITE MUST BE COMMENCED WITHIN ONE (1) YEAR AFTER THE CAUSE OF ACTION ACCRUES, OTHERWISE, SUCH CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM IS PERMANENTLY BARRED.
  • Waiver . No waiver by Broker of any term or condition set forth in these Terms shall be deemed a further or continuing waiver of such term or condition or a waiver of any other term or condition, and any failure of the Broker to assert a right or provision under these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
  • Severability . If any provision of these Terms is held by a court or other tribunal of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable for any reason, such provision shall be eliminated or limited to the minimum extent such that the remaining provisions of the Terms will continue in full force and effect.
  • Governing Law and Mandatory Venue . The laws of the State of Florida govern the rights and obligations of the parties to this Agreement and the interpretation, construction and enforceability thereof. You agree that any action or proceeding initiated by Charterer against Broker shall be brought solely in the federal and state courts of Hillsborough County, Florida, and you submit to the jurisdiction of those courts and waive any objections to the exercise of personal jurisdiction over you by those courts. In the event any action or proceeding is initiated by Charterer in a court outside of Hillsborough County, Florida, Charterer agrees to pay Broker’s costs and reasonable attorneys’ fees associated with defending such action or proceeding and waives any and all defenses to the transfer of said action or proceeding, whether jurisdictional or otherwise, to a federal or state court in Hillsborough County, Florida.

Seawolf-superyacht

On board with Mike Potter, owner of 58m Superyacht Seawolf

Superyacht owner Mike Potter had made his fortune by the age of 51 – and that’s when the fun really started, with sailing, diving, vintage planes and family getting his full attention. Cécile Gauert catches up with the high-flying Canadian...

Mike Potter is trim and fit at 74 and as comfortable in a flight suit as in a wetsuit. The owner of 58.8 metre explorer Seawolf is an honorary colonel in the Royal Canadian Air Force and displays a very Canadian modesty about his accomplishments.

When I ask him about his background, he paints a quick portrait. “I was in the software business. I was very fortunate that it did well and I was comfortable bringing in professional management. It was a fair size by the time I did, so that allowed me to retire in the sense that I didn’t have to go to the office every day.”

Business articles tell the story differently. Potter forged a reputation as a trailblazer in the tech world, which earned him a lifetime achievement award from the Ottawa business community in 2016. He studied mathematics and physics, earned a master’s degree at the University of British Columbia and served with the Royal Canadian Navy.

He joined Quasar Systems in 1972 when he was 28. Two years later, he bought the company and renamed it Cognos. He took it public in 1986, following the success of the PowerHouse programming language that earned the company international renown. The largest computer software company in Canada, it employed 1,100 people worldwide by the early 1990s, and in 1995 Potter stepped aside. In 2007, IBM acquired what was now a major developer of business intelligence software for $4.9 billion.

He had been all in from the day he started and then, at 51, as the company was thriving, he decided to step aside, a move he was comfortable to make but which surprised some. He recalls telling a journalist who asked why he’d left such a successful company: “What’s the alternative? Is it better to step down when things are not going well?” He had decided it was time for him to do other things, explore his passions for sailing and flying and to raise a family. He did not retire exactly, but he had a lot more time to pursue personal interests, and a well-run family office allowed him to roam far and wide – “actually they encourage it”, he says.

An avid pilot since his early twenties, he started acquiring a collection of vintage aeroplanes in 2000 and in 2003 formed a non-profit organisation called Vintage Wings of Canada, which showcases restored aircraft at air shows and in a small museum.

“It’s an aspect of my life that has received a bit of attention in the community,” he says. “I have a collection of antique airplanes, mainly Second World War fighters, many flown by Canadians. We have British and American airplanes: Spitfire, Hurricane, Mustang, Kittyhawk, Corsair, and some even more rare examples from the 1930s and 1940s, plus a carbon-fibre aerobatic airplane and a 1950s era Canadian bush plane.” He has flown everything from gliders to a Dassault Falcon 200.

“I find sailors and pilots are often people who have the same interests,” he says. And he does love sailing. “I really grew up on the water. I was born in England, actually. My family moved to Canada when I was seven but I still remember living in a town called Southend right on the Thames Estuary. We bounced around with my family when we came to Canada, but we settled in Victoria on Vancouver Island. I grew up there and started sailing, and then I joined the Navy and went through military college.”

In the 1990s, he had a semi-custom 13 metre sailboat built in Bristol, Rhode Island. He took it from Cape Cod across the North Atlantic to Ireland and Scotland , south to the Canaries, back across the Atlantic to the Caribbean , and finally north again, completing the North Atlantic circle in Cape Cod in 1995. Friends joined him on each leg, making every trip a fondly remembered experience.

Eventually, he tapped naval architect Bill Langan, a yacht designer with Sparkman & Stephens , to create a custom 29 metre sailing yacht, which they built at Vitters . He kept that yacht for 10 years, sailing with his family throughout Europe, in the Mediterranean, the Baltic and around the UK, and in North America on both coasts as far north as Alaska .

Having a chance to spend time with his three growing daughters and exploring the world is what got the sailor into a motor yacht. He bought Seawolf , a converted ocean-going tug with its original 1956 engines, in 2008.

“What motivated me to do it really was my kids, who were four, nine and 11 at the time. I wanted several things that I wasn’t getting in a small sailboat. I wanted a little more space, so the kids could bring their friends, and I wanted to have the ability to carry equipment – toys, they call them. I wanted to carry things that could allow us to have activities aside from sailing. And I wanted the ability to go anywhere in the world. I wanted to discover the planet; not go just to the Caribbean and the Med.”

A broker brought to his attention a converted tug named Dolce Far Niente . Potter had started to think about trading his sailing yacht for a more modern explorer yacht, but when he saw the tug, as he says, “I fell in love with it”. It was more boat than he was intending to build, but he envisioned all that he could do with that deck space and range. The boat was built to go in any kind of weather, but it was more than a tough boat. It had a lovely aura of a bygone age .

The first time the tug caught the attention of the yachting world at large was at the 2002 Monaco Yacht Show, midway through a conversion carried out at Astilleros de Mallorca by a previous owner. The tug, built in the Netherlands and launched in 1957 as Clyde for L Smit & Co, was known for several feats of strength, including simultaneously towing two aircraft carriers and pulling supertankers through typhoons. But beyond that, it was a very good-looking boat, even before the conversion that brought it closer to yacht standards.

“She’s beautiful,” says Potter. “Although she was originally built in the 1950s as a commercial boat, I think the naval architect at the time made some effort to build a ship with beautiful lines. Then the conversion was done by somebody who was sensitive to that and kept those beautiful lines, so I liked that,” he says. “And it has a huge boat deck for storage. I put an 8.5 metre sailboat [a classic Herreshoff replica] on it and an 8.8 metre tender, which we use a lot for diving, plus I have a rowboat with a sliding seat, several kayaks and paddleboards, jet skis and most of all we have a massive amount of diving gear. We have a Nitrox system, we have a hyperbaric barometric chamber for emergencies, which I hope we never have to use, and enough equipment to put a dozen people of any size or skill level in the water at the same time.”

He still dives frequently and it’s a passion he now shares with his children. “I think that Seawolf has really made them divers more than sailors, but that’s OK. They like the water. That’s the most important thing,” he says.

Potter and the crew have a real bond with the boat and enjoy its history. The big six-cylinder Smit-MAN engines painted green chug steadily, watched over by an attentive engineer and are a sight to behold. The steady sound they make as the boat moves from anchorage to anchorage at night is as soothing as a lullaby.

The past is alive in the beautifully updated interior. A historically accurate model of Clyde is on board to remind all who sail in her of the ship’s past. It was a gift to Potter from his partner, Diane Cramphin, a designer who worked in secret with Seawolf ’s first officer to find it. She surprised him with it, and he loves to look at all its accurate details.

In August 2013, Potter helped organise an encounter in the Netherlands with the tug’s sistership Elbe . Like Seawolf , she’s had many lives, serving for a time as a support ship for Greenpeace, and now she’s a floating museum. The encounter took place in the boats’ original port of Maassluis, near Rotterdam, and the event attracted a crowd of enthusiasts and former Smit employees and their families. “We were surrounded by thousands of local people, many of whom went back a couple of generations, who were building and operating these tugs in the 1950s,” Potter says. In the crowd, tears in his eyes, was the son of the boat’s original designer, JCA Hoogenbosch.

This is very meaningful to Potter, who makes sure the boat is in tip-top shape. “Eventually this boat will have a new life with another family,” he says.

Having the boat has “given me a fantastic lifestyle being around family and friends. They say I am an active owner. I’ve done typically 80 days a year. I will probably do more than 100 days this year, but I’d live on it if I could.”

He doesn’t because he still has obligations shoreside and this allows Seawolf occasionally to be available for charter . The knowledgeable crew includes a marine biologist. Recently, Seawolf has cruised the Pacific from French Polynesia , to Fiji , Bali and the Philippines.

In spite of his attachment to Seawolf , with his children growing up and becoming independent, he thought he might have fewer opportunities to spend time with them, so a few months ago he put the boat on the market. However, shortly after we discussed his plans to get back into sailing, he took another trip aboard Seawolf to the Solomon Islands . During the voyage, he decided to withdraw it from sale. He told his broker he was simply having too much fun. “ Seawolf allows us to do so many different activities and keep hyperactive on every trip on board,” he says.“I love this boat."

1977 Hudson Seawolf

  • Add to quote

I have just bought this vessel and plan to sail the Carribean with her. I have yet to find anyone who owns a 44 Hudson. I would love to get more info on these boats. Anyone out there? Thanks, Frank

Hope this helps Brief History of Hardin International Co., Ltd. by W. A. Campbell I am somewhat familiar with the Hardin 45's, having been an importer for the boats from 1977 until the factory was closed in the mid 1980's. My wife and I owned a Hardin 45 for about 1 1/2 years in 1980/81 and another for 10 years from 1990 to 2000. Be cautioned not to believe some of the rumors that fly around about the Taiwan boats and roving Chinese families that built parts of different boats as they wandered from yard to yard. Most of the rumors are circulated by people who have never been to Taiwan or built a boat anywhere. I have had boats built in six different yards in Taiwan and China over the past 29 years and have visited dozens more yards in Taiwan and China. I have never seen that phenomenon. Every yard that I have worked in has had its own full time employees ranging from 75 to 200 workers depending on the size of the yard and the volume demand at the time. Work forces did go up and down with business, much like they do here in the USA in any industry. I personally knew Bill Hardin and my wife and I had dinner with him at the Hong Kong Yacht Club in 1981, and then visited Hardin 45, Hull #100 which he kept for himself at the club in Hong Kong harbor. He was born in 1926 and studied naval architecture and engineering at Long Beach City College under Prof. Aldenberg (rated in the top 3 in the US at the time). Bill Hardin worked with fiberglass as early as 1948 and in fiberglass boat building in Japan in 1959. He died in the Vancouver, BC area in the 1990's. Bill Hardin, Bill Crealock, Ernie Chamberlain and William Garden were the pioneers of Taiwan boat building for the American market. They were the ones who really got the industry rolling in the late 1960's and 1970's. Bill Hardin started the CT (Ta Chaio) yard with two Chinese partners in the Taipei area (northern Taiwan) with the original Wm. Garden designed Sea Wolf 40, the Sea Sprite, and the original Garden designed Force 50. He left CT soon after, taking his Sea Wolf molds with him. But his Sea Wolf 40 was copied by many yards and sold as CT41, Island Trader 41, Yankee Clipper 41, Sea Tiger 41, Transworld 41, etc., a very popular traditional ketch. The Force 50 molds were taken to Hudson Boat Company in the Taipei area, but the Force 50 was also copied as an Island Trader 51, Formosa 51, etc. This copying problem is why it was nearly impossible to get a set of drawings from a Taiwan builder. Bill Hardin moved to Kaohsiung, Taiwan (southern end) and built a new factory where labor and overhead costs were lower - around 1970. The company was called Hardin International Co. Ltd. That is where he designed and built the Hardin 45. They built an all fiberglass construction and they were the only builder of the Hardin 45. The boats were imported at first as a Bounty 44. Around 1980, Hardin re-designed the hull from a 6'0" draft to 5'6" draft, trimmed down the transom and moved the two aft ports from the hull to the aft cabin trunk, and also extended the boat to 45' 2". Most people do not even notice these changes. To avoid confusion, the Bounty 44s and Hardin 45s are all referred to by brokers as Hardin 45s. He also built about 20-25 boats for Island Trader. They used the same hull molds, but built the boat to Island Trader's specs and used a different deck mold (not a flush deck) with a small cabin trunk over the saloon and smaller front windows. We do not have information about the standards or specs given to the factory for these boats, but they do look similar to the Hardin 45 at first look. The Island Trader 45s are usually referred to as Island Traders. An importer that made a contract with a builder could set the standards and specs for equipment, finishes and in the case of some yards, the scantlings and design modifications for any original design. They could then import the modified design under their own name or a new model name. This was a common practice with some small yards that were building in the early 1970s, and using copied designs. Large importers who could not fill their orders from a single yard, would contract with several different yards for their particular brand name of boat. This accounted for some of the quality variation between boats sold under the same model name, and why it is difficult to generalize about quality of a given model boat that may have sold hundreds of boats in the 1970s and 1980s. A total of about 130 Hardin 45s were built by the time the factory closed in the mid 1980s. There were a couple of partially completed boats at that time that may have been finished later and imported into the US or Europe. The boats were generally of good quality finish and of excellent structural integrity. The problems that have surfaced in the used boats over the years can usually be traced back to poor maintenance. A recommendation that I make to Hardin buyers is that they have a set of storm shutters for all of the large windows if they plan to make any kind of ocean passage. Fiberglass storm shutters were offered by Bill Hardin as an option when ordering a boat, but were usually not ordered. They can be easily made and retrofitted to the boats at any time. The Hardins are great cruising and live aboard boats and Bill contribution to the boat building industry will be appreciated long into the future. W. A. Campbell, III, President

There is an active member of these forums with a 44' Seawolf, undergoing a restoration process. Not sure if it's the same model, but he may chime in with comments. If not, here's a link to his gallery-send him a PM: http://www.sailnet.com/photogallery/showgallery.php/cat/526

Hey TB, that's me! That was a great article that Ian posted. I have a Hardin 41 Seawolf. I personally think it is a really cool boat. When I bought it, frankly, it leaked badly. Fortunately, the previous owner was a bit eccentric and had lived aboard for the previous 10 years with a plastic cover over it. I discovered the leaks when I uncovered it for the first time. I have been addressing the leaks one hatch at a time. 1. I have rebed all of the portholes. 2. I rebuilt the butterfly hatch. 3. I rebuilt the companionway entrance. 4. I removed the old stancions and covered the holes with epoxy pending installation of new stancions. 5. I still have to re-caulk the teak decking. 6. I have also re-bedded all of the deckside through-holes. I think they are sturdy boats that need a lot of attention and maintenence. But its worth it.

I knew you had a Seawolf, but couldn't recall the size. So, I assume the Hudsons & Hardins are completely different boats, both Taiwan built, but by different designers?

Thank you TrueBlue. Frank

Hello, we are planning on buying a 1977 Hudson Seawolf 44 ft. Is it possible to obatin the building plans for the boat online?

sea wolf sailing yacht

Welcome to SailNet. You probably cannot get a set of drawings that is actually specific to the boat you are planning to buy. The original design for the boat was drawn by Bill Garden. Many of his designs were published in a pair of books which originally appeared back in the 1970's or 1980's and which can sometimes be found used online. The original drawings for many of his designs are at The William Garden Collection at Mystic Seaport. William Garden Collection But boats like the Hudson Sea Wolf 44 were generally heavily adapted by the boatyards that actually built the boats. My mother had boats built and imported from Taiwan during this period and saw much of this first hand. While there were designs ascribed to some particular designer and given some stock model name, the designs as executed were rarely built true to the original drawings. In other words, in those days a yard might take a 41 foot Garden design and stretch it to 44 feet. That let them off the hook for paying royalties to the original designer. Similarly in that era the Taiwanese yards tended engineer and build the rig, select an engine, hardware, and interior layout almost on a custom basis. Different importers would rebrand essentially the same design with a variety of company and model names, and each change of name came with a slight tweak to make it their own model. The build process that allowed this flexibility was that these boats would start with a stock fiberglass hull plug. Maybe the transom was stretched a little. Maybe the stem and trail-boards lengthened a bit. Suddenly, what had been a Formosa 41, or Mariner 40, or Island Trader 41/42, or CT41, or Porpoise was now a Sea Wolf 44. From there these boats were literally built as wooden boats in terms of the deck and cabin structure as well as the rigs and interiors.(Reportedly the later 1980's Hardin Sea Wolfs had a fiberglass deck built on a mold rather than framed as a wooden deck and then glassed or planked over) Material selections and build quality was all over the place. The yards would quote low prices then do whatever it took to make a profit. Often that meant that the original engineering would be 'adjusted', questionable material substitutions made, and knockoff equipment installed. Hopefully, by now many of the 'original sins' may have been corrected by a prior owner of the boat that you are looking at, or else gotten bad enough to be obviously visible so you might know what you are getting into. As a word of caution. whatever you do, if ever there was a boat where a complete and competent survey by an extremely knowledgeable surveyor was fully warranted, it would be the case with these 1970's era, Taiwanese-built- Garden designs.
