Review of Aloha 34

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 227.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Aloha 34 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.68 - 1.78 meter (5.51 - 5.81 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Aloha 34 is typically equipped with a Westerbeke diesel engine.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 100.0 liters (26 US gallons, 21 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Aloha 34 is 1.87, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Aloha 34 is about 199 kg/cm, alternatively 1114 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 199 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1114 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 33m 2 (355 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

The aim of the Association is to enable owners of these Aloha models to participate as a group in all aspects of Aloha sailing. We have owner/boat details of just over 375 of the approximately 500 boats built in these series. Except for the Aloha Forum discussion pages, all parts of this website are accessible without registration. If you own an Aloha and would like your details including in the Owners Listings, please spend a couple of minutes signing up with the Association completely free by filling and submitting the registration form with your boat details and contact information. We promise that your personal data will never be used other than for Association purposes.

Please also take time to sign up to the  Alohaowners Forum  (also free!), by seeing information about how the Forum works. Because we are a no-subscription association, we don’t have a regular newsletter and this forum is the primary and very active means of communication among members and a valuable source of Aloha chat and information. Both owners and all others interested in Aloha related topics are welcome to join the Forum.

Follow the menu options on the left for areas of the site that interest you and click away. The site is regularly updated as more information becomes available, so check back from time to time in the future and see the What’s New page for details. As well as the models listed above, the Aloha range included the Aloha 34 (10.4) whose owners have their own group with a website at Aloha 34 Network. At least one “prototype” Aloha-Perry 41 was produced, with the intention to add a 47 as well,  as shown in this copy of an Aloha Yachts advertisement. Before (and for a while after) introducing the Aloha range, Ouyang also manufactured a number of the Matilda 16, 20 & 23. We are not aware of any owners association for these boats, but a more information and links can be found on this Matilda Sailboats web page. If you have information, articles or pictures that you think will be of interest email these to us.

As soon as spring comes I intend to have a survey made on an aloha 34 I plan to buy, I will be sailing on lake Ontario, and St-lawrence river. I plan to buy this boat because as soon as get the opportunity I wish to cross the pond and and cruise the mediteraneen. It might be in 6 or 7 years, who knows? And I beleive that the aloha 34 is well suited for that purpose, and in a mean time its not a slug, so its also a good choice for Lake Ontario. My mind is pretty much made for the aloha, but I am just curious to know what Jeff H thinks about it , and of course all other inputs are welcome! and if you have any suggestions for other boats in the same price range/category, just in case the deal does not conclude. Thanks Daniel G

A similar boat, in fact they look the same, is the Hinterheoller 35. I think you will find it is much more suitable for a trip across the pond, I believe the design and build quality is much better. I do not know this for sure but have heard from different sources that the quality of construction on the Alohas varied a fair bit. Good Luck Gary

She's a Ted Brewer design, roomy and comfortable and well behaved as his work usually is. Aloha 34 - Used Sailboat Market in Canada ALOHA 34 sailboat on sailboatdata.com More fin keel than Brewer's usual longish keel/Brewer bite style of hull but that likely explains it's non-slug status. Not aware of any serious quality issues with Aloha, expect they would be on par with other local builders of that era.

aloha 34 sailboat data

I drew the deck lines for that boat when I was moonlighting for Ted.

Does the Aloha 34 have a deck stepped or keel stepped mast? I haven't seen a mast in interior photos, but perhaps it is hidden behind some wood work? (Just a practical matter knowing there are low bridges in my future.)

I don't think that it matters very much if it is keel or deck-stepped - the mast is much too big to make it convenient for dropping to go under bridges. If this is an absolute must you need to look at boats with purpose-built tabernacles. I think there are some Dutch boats like that.

grease and funds in if she was free..
If she's not already get her lifted out and grind back the encapsulation at its lowest point to drain any water that may have entered and leave to dry.. while its drying turn to the .. not being used for 2-3yrs is no biggie.. try turning by hand first to see if anything's locked up.. then charge the and turn her over to see if she fires.. maybe best to hire a for a morning to do this.
Suggest you use a 10litre can of fresh run direct to the engine for the testing as the state of any in boats tank will be dubious.. if all's well with the engine then drain and flush the before filling with fresh fuel.
then re-glass the keel where you created the drain point and the crack..
Good luck.. nice gift..

to pay someone to do it...

Otherwise, if you are broke and handy, you can still manage to work on things little by little...

I am still working my Tartan 34 and realistically with regular life (wife, toddler, house), it makes it tough to work on my in a timely manner...

I have heard of people working on their boat full time and getting it fully restored within months...Doable...Just focus on what is important first then focus on "upgrades" after...the upgrades are the expensive on boats...even if you are patient and keep a lookout for these upgrade and buy them used, they are still pretty expensive used...

I have a accumulated things used little by little and once done, I should have the boat that will be around for most of the rest of my life hopefully...I really don't want anything bigger or smaller in foreseeable future...Launch date will be euphoric for me...2018 I think...2017 is out of the question at this point...

  12. Going to check out an Aloha 34. Thoughts?

The 34 seems like a pure sailboat. The problem may stem from the fact that Sailboatdata lists the SA/D as 11.33 which would be severely under-canvased. However, I calculate the SA/D using the I, J, P, and E dimensions and I get 14.33. Still not very high, but more in the realm of a sailboat.

  14. Aloha 34: thoughts?

ALOHA 34 -No personal experience. -She would be fine in the Bahamas. The shoal draft model would be slightly more convenient, but the standard model would do fine . -Singlehanding would depend on how you set up the boat and your personal sailing style and idiosyncrasies.
